*gnawing at own forearm* do you ever think about the fact that the only time we clearly see oda in the main series is right when dazai's about to go on a speech that presents bsd's underlying philosophy & driving force for the agency?

"An ex-hitman has no right to turn good." ...do you really think that? That's utter nonsense.

of course it's nonsense – because turning good is what oda wanted for himself, even before he wanted it for dazai. oda didn't want to kill; he wanted to write. of course turning good is achievable – because that's what oda was trying to do. for dazai, that's proof enough that it's possible. he believes it because oda did.

and then!! he keeps going!!!

so you want to be good. you killed people and you want to be good and you don't think you can be, because of who you've been until now.

What should one do when what they want is at odds with reality?

you do what oda did, what the agency does: you fight for it, because that's all you can do.

What do we fight for? How should we live? Nobody can give us the answers to these questions – all we have is the right to agonize over them.

all you can do is try to make it happen, stumbling the entire way, getting lost trying to find your answers. recklessly dashing through the gutter, like stray dogs caked in mud.

this is what dazai believes, because he's seen it happen – with oda, and then with the agency. the ADA gives out second chances to anyone who's trying to be good, to fight to create meaning for themselves.

oda told dazai to be good, and the agency gave him the opportunity to act on it. so when he's trying to convince kyouka that she, too, can be good – that she can join the agency and leave the darkness she's been living in... of course he thinks of oda. of course.

The Material Plane

After the chaos of the Dawn Age when the Keeper divided the Mortal World to separate the warring factions she created five primary duplicates, each with a differing connection to the four Immortal Planes. The Material Plane was constructed with a perfectly balanced connection to each of these realms which resulted in it's greater degree of diversity when compared with the other planes.

When the Division occurred the Keeper decided that the Titans should inhabit the Plane of Balance, she hoped that the most contentious faction would find harmony in the center of the vast cosmos. Unfortunately the Titans were not so compliant. Some sought peace and tranquility in the newfound silence, while others raged at the world intent on tearing down the boundaries of existence to reach their ancient foes.

When those wrathful Titans eventually fell, with the assistance of the Gods, those that remained sought to rebuild the shattered realm. The last of the Titans knew that if they were to wage war once more this fragile world falter and pass on into the great Unknown; not wanting the realm they loved to end they concocted a plan. They worked the first of Istoriah's Great Magics to grant substance to the roots of Yggdrasil that threaded through all of Creation and wove them into gateways through which energy could flow. Then with the energies of the 5 Mortal and 4 Immortal planes running through them they immolated.

From their ashes rose millions of new creatures who inherited the world. Where the Ash fell on land came the Beasts that walk, where it muddied the waters came the Beasts that swam, and where it coated the clouds came the Beasts that fly. When all that remained of the Titans were embers pulsing with energy and light a hand broke through the charred remains. Then another, and another. The Human Race hatched from the remains and wandered blearily into the world.

They were not humans as you might call them, those that hatched near the new-formed Beasts took on their traits and became the first Beastfolk. And weather "Beastfolk" or "Human" they each carried within them the essence of every world. With that essence came the ability to procreate with any and all creatures within Creation and soon the realm was inundated with any number of Hybrids. By the time of the First Sundering what it meant to be "Human", at least biologically, was so diluted that it has simply become a catch-all term for Sapient Beings within the Material Plane.

Despite this some few distinctions can be made; those of Álfr descent are known as Elves and Satyrs, those of Dvergr descent are often Drawves of Gnomes, those of Jötunn are Goliaths and Ogres, and so on. Interspersed within these are many variants, such as Firbolgs born from Beastfolk and Goliaths, or beings imbued with aspects of other planes like Angelbloods or Spiritborns. Whatever they may be, and however they may have come to be they all still call Istoriah "Home".
