 SYNOPSIS: 

Kidnapped on the island of Haiti, Jack and Janet Drake are horrified as the Obeah Man kills their assistant Jeremy on film. He gives the tape to one of his followers, Louis Dange, to deliver to Drake Industries in Gotham.

In the Batcave, Batman checks on the status of the search for the Drakes. The search is resuming after having been called off for the night. Batman volunteers to bring Tim Drake his dinner. He tries to be reassuring and offers to take the day off, but Tim plans to get back to work on catching a hacker called the moneyspider, rather than dwell on his feelings. Despite this, when Bruce leaves, Tim doubts the sincerity of his reassurances.

At the home of Louis Dange, his son Pierre has a nightmare about a monster, the Baka, escaping from a closet he is forbidden to open. When he tells his father of his dream, he is told to mind his own business until he is a man.

On the streets of Gotham City, Batman takes out several thugs before stopping at Gotham City Police Headquarters to meet with Commissioner Gordon. The Commissioner shows the tape that the Obeah Man made, and warns that it isn't pretty. After viewing the tape, Batman notices a faint odor of Jimsonweed on it and keeps it for testing. Commissioner Gordon notes that Drake's company has a policy not to pay ransoms. Batman warns that the Obeah Man isn't joking, before leaving.

Batman deduces that Jimsonweed is used in an aromatic smoking mixture for asthma relief - the same mixture that Louis Dange is smoking in his home when he discovers his son exploring the cupboard he has been forbidden to open. He catches Pierre and his friend, warning them that he will beat them if they go near it again. The children run off, wondering if the Baka monster is real.

In the Batcave, Tim becomes frustrated with the lack of news, and goes to bed, at Alfred's urging. Unbeknownst to Tim, Batman has returned with the bad news that the Drakes were kidnapped. He warns Alfred not to mention it to Tim. He enhances the background of the tape to discover that there is a jar containing a giant centipede on the shelf. From this, he deduces that the Drakes are held captive in Haiti.

Unfortunately, Tim discovers the tape and realizes that his parents are alive. At first he is angry, but eventually, relents and Batman explains his theory that Tim's parents are being held by a Haitian voodoo cult. Suddenly, Batman gets a call indicating that the Drakes' company has received the ransom call, and he leaves.

As Batman leaves, Tim realizes that both of the previous Robins have lost their parents, and wonders if it's a prerequisite. Alfred assures him that it is not.

•Song That Got You Into K-Pop: Bae Bae by BigBang. I first clicked on Loser, I wasn’t feeling it completely but liked it enough to give them another chance so I clicked on Bae Bae, that one was on repeat for weeks. 

(Idk... I think I might seem like an older kpop fan but I got into kpop in 2015. I’m one of those people who when getting into sth they really dig further until the origin of a thing, especially when it comes to music. So I know a lot about 1st and 2nd gen too, and I am mainly a fan of 2nd and 3rd gen bc I’m more around the same age as late 2nd gen - 3rd gen kpop idols, we grew up around the same time so I relate to them the most. For reference I am 2 years younger than Gikwang (late 2nd gen) and Yongguk (early 3rd gen), same age as Ken (early 3rd gen) and Sunmi (late 2nd gen). I heard about Kpop before 2015 ofc but i was in an industrial/obscure electronic music fase before kpop)

“Notice yourself noticing”- a conversation with Josh Flowers.

I met Josh Flowers back when I was at University in Edinburgh and he was in an alt folk band “Josh Flowers & the Wild,” they and Roo Panes’s were in the middle of a UK tour and were crashing at my flat. I thought I had hit the jack pot with a crew of hunky guitar wielding guys under my roof. I had organised a gig for them- which was  to a group of over excitable vodka and red bull drinking students in the Voodoo rooms.  Fortunately my friends and I have progressed onto more full bodied drinks: similarly, Josh Flowers has evolved over the 8 years. He kindly gave me some time last week to discuss his New EP and his other musical project Echobaby.

I started off our face time with wanting to discuss the progression of his sound and how he has moved from a folk/blues sound into a less easily definable songwriter space. He told me that the breakthrough came when he started writing songs that were consistent to who he is day to day. He felt in order to be authentic, the songs needed to contain humour and wit as a means to getting at the more serious subject matter. But this has only been able to come about through him getting to know himself and finding out how he really communicates and zeroing in on that.

Josh doesn’t start with a writing formula: he just has voice notes and a physical book to hand to record what he notices. He then sits down with the notes every few days and sees if these musings can lead him down a song journey. For example, the track “San Fransisco” which is on his recent EP, "Side A" has a strong chorus singing about being born on the fault line. This would make people think that the track originated out of a trip to the dusty san Andreas fault line. In fact the song originated over a coffee with a friend at Balans cafe in rainy London. The friend said to Josh that they would lend him one of his favourite books ‘but most of my books are in San Francisco’. The line caught his ear and he wrote it down, thinking it might be a good starting point for a song. And it did, leading him on to the beautiful melodies of “San Fransisco”.

Josh reminded me that being ‘creative’ rarely seems to consist of just making stuff up. “It is like having your brain switched to a sort of satellite mode, ready to pick up the interesting stuff going on around you all the time.”

I mentioned the way in which his songs often take me to driving down the 1 in California and have a Beach Boys quality to them, which he said is funny as most of the tracks he had written before he had stepped foot into the Golden state.  He did say that he had wanted to write good driving music, noticing the likes of War on Drugs and Future Islands have qualities to their songs where you can "let your mind roam when your body is occupied." In fact, one of my favourite Flowers tracks “The car you drive” was birthed out of a journey on the M1 from London to his hometown Leeds, whilst he was listening to Lou Reed and the line “ I love you for the car you drive” popped into his head and he precariously got out his phone to record it whilst zooming up the motorway.

He assured me that most times he pulls over.

Echobaby

Josh is also one half of the gorgeous duo, Echobaby, who is in the fortunate position of being used to writing songs over face time as Julianna is based in San Diego. In a sense they are ahead of the game whilst other artists are currently having to get used to creating in lock down. Their new single “Raining cats and dogs”, which is out on Friday, was recorded entirely long distance, which is a first for them. It was a process that was surprisingly useful for Josh as he says it limits the amount of choices you have with instruments and recording techniques and means you are forced to get very creative within those new limitations. It was produced and mixed by Julianna and I had the pleasure of getting a preview of the single and loved it. It is beautifully human, grounding and incredibly timely for what the world is going through. Josh described Julianna as his co-writing soul mate, having met her 2 years ago when they were both working on a play in New York; it was the musical love at first listen. He said that she has certainly set the bar high for other co-writing situations.

I asked him for advice for myself as a songwriter and other budding artists and he jokingly said “be yourself,” but quickly said that he wasn’t going to give me such a trite, impractical answer. “It is about noticing yourself, noticing things” he said. To really hone in on what moves you, you need to take note of what you are noticing and then tune yourself to those things and themes. This will then enable you to be a better observer and a better writer. He asked me what moves me and I said that I often can feel overwhelming sadness when I see elderly people and he said it could be because i am moved by loneliness and vulnerability and I need to lean into that when I am writing. What do you notice and why do you notice it?

It was a real pleasure getting a small insight to Josh’s creative journey and process. But the cherry on top followed in the evening when I got to enjoy the instagram live launch of his EP.  What was most wonderful about it was that I got to enjoy this from the comfort of my bath; a first for my gig career! Maybe this is the future, we won’t be gracing sticky gig venues with sweaty vodka red bull drinkers… well, actually, I quite miss the B.O and the bopping heads. However nice it was to listen to Josh in a bubble bath, I look forward to a proper gig of his in the future.

I’ve ranted about TS4 Magic Possibilities before. They could’ve killed 2-3 birds if they made a Hogwarts EP, to have magical boarding schools with GEN/UNI/SN all at once.

One good thing is that TS4 already has SSNS -- hopefully EA will make witches more like they were in TS2, but instead of Good/Evil affiliations, let’s PLEASE have magic be elemental. I want witches to have power over the weather, or at least be able to choose specific Magical Types, like:

hedge witches/wiccans/shamans with plant and animal magic

lightning and water/ice weather powers like the X-Men

fire and earth elementals, more like an ifrit/djinn

dark occultists with voodoo and all the cool arcane arts

psychics with divination/sortilege via tarot cards and scrying crystals

I bet we’ll get NONE of these. XD

THE THIEVES GUILD.

Here is, finally, a more in-depth look at the Thieves Guild. Very, very long post under the cut!

KEY: A ♢ at the end of a section indicates the entirety of the preceding text is original content. A ♦ at the end of a section indicates that the preceding text has been extrapolated from canon fairly strictly. If unspecified, it is a blend. 

NOTE: I do not take the Thieves Guild-related events in the 1990s show (ep. “X-Ternally Yours”) as canon. Bobby LeBeau is not an acknowledged entity in my portrayal and I have no background build for him. The Guild details provided in this episode are not considered, and the rest of this post is extrapolated from comic canon / personal construction.

ORIGIN.

The Thieves Guild was created by the External known as Candra, The Benefactress (who Remy also apparently had a whirlwind romance with while unaware of what she was, go figure), current alias Red Death. 

She established the Thieves Guild and its rival counterpart the Assassins Guild in the early 1800s, granting the Assassins superhuman Power and the Thieves the Elixir of Life as well as basing them in New Orleans. The Guilds were established in an attempt for Candra to set up defenses, as she had refused to take part in the conflict among her brethren. The Assassins’ protection combined with the two factions’ monetary, periodic tithes to her would allow her to live her life comfortably on Earth.

The pseudo-religious nature and archaic organization meant that while the Guilds operated in the modern day, they were their own closed communities as well. Traditionally, the Thieves Guild did not steal from those who couldn’t afford to be stolen from - however, warring factions within the Guild started to change these ideals, and branch practices such as kidnapping and weapons trafficking arose despite Jean-Luc’s best efforts, thanks to negligence from his father before him. 

As a result, Jean-Luc LeBeau pinned his hopes on his adopted, mutant son, hoping that as the King of Thieves one day Remy would be able to restore the Guild to its former glory and more.

He would be proven correct. ♦

STRUCTURE.

The original Thieves Guild consists of ten established families. High councils were meetings of representatives of each family, typically held in regards of leadership concerns. The highest-ranking members of the Guild are referred to as the Cardinal Thieves. Individual Guild enclaves are presided over by guildmasters. ♦

In the current day, the Guild has spread. While the ten traditional families remain, and indeed hold quite a bit of prestige, crew leaders and guildmasters are no longer solely selected from these families, with leadership being merit-based. It can easily be considered an international crime syndicate and typically is. ♢

KNOWN MEMBERS.

Remy LeBeau - King of Thieves. Leads the Unified Guild of New Orleans.

Jean-Luc LeBeau - Previous Guild patriarch. Professional thief. Adoptive father to Remy LeBeau.

Henri LeBeau - Finance manager. Adoptive brother to Remy LeBeau. DECEASED. 

Mercy LeBeau - First female master thief in Guild history. Recipient of extended lifespan due to the Elixir of Life. Sister-in-law to Remy LeBeau.

Jacques LeBeau - Previous Guild patriarch. Adoptive grandfather to Remy LeBeau. DECEASED.

Genard Alouette - “Harvest Disseminator.” Established fence, tracker, and cargo mover.

Etienne Marceaux - Thief. Childhood best friend and adoptive cousin of Remy LeBeau. DECEASED.

Theoren Marceaux - “Harvest Master.” Specializes in target selection and data collection. Adoptive cousin to Remy LeBeau.

Adam Worth - English master thief in the 1890s. Aided during time travel shenanigans. DECEASED.

Mattie Baptiste - Healer. Voodoo mama extraordinaire.

Emil Lapin - Master thief and electronics expert. Adoptive cousin and childhood friend to Remy LeBeau.

Baptiste Lespieau - Aspiring master thief. Courier and smuggling specialty.

Nil - Cardinal Thief. Technomancer. Previously a candidate for Guild patriarch before being trounced by Remy LeBeau.

Wrangler - Crew recruiter. Antique repair. 

Fence - Thief. Hacker. Dealer. Specializes in medical technology.

Antiquary - Sorcerer. Archivist of historical information and mystical artifacts. EXILED.

NOTE: Several occupations have been extrapolated on or constructed as necessary, but with the exception of OCs remain close to canon. Wrangler and Baptiste Lespieaux are OCs.

By current count, there are 92 living master thieves recognized by the Guild. 7/92 of the holders of this title are members of the LeBeau family and its branches, more than any other of the ten Guild career families. ♢

KNOWN COUNTRIES ACTIVE.

After the surge of expansion provided by unifying the Guilds, there is now an active presence in every established, recognized country excluding: Andora, Brunei Darussalam, Comoros, Kyrgyzstan, Lesotho, Malawi, Montserrat, Reunion, Swaziland, Timor Leste, Togo, Uzbekistan.

Given the already impressive scope of current operations and the resettling political structure, there are no immediate plans for placing Guild halls in these countries, but it is a future ideal.  ♢

NOTABLE LOCATIONS.

GUILD HEADQUARTERS. The historical Guild headquarters and original establishment remains in New Orleans. It serves as the base of operations for North American endeavors. ♦

THE STOLEN ISLAND. The Stolen Island (which is more an isle, and has been referred to as both) acts as an international base of operations for the Guild. Located in the Mediterranean Sea, it does not exist on any known map, and is considered one of the great legendary thefts - it is one of the best-kept secrets in the world. Many notable master thieves work from the Island or even live there part- or full-time, such as Jean-Luc LeBeau and Nil.  

CHURCH OF THE LOST THIEVES. Located in the French Quarter, the Church of Lost Thieves is a refuge for thieves questioning their path or with no remaining place to go. Even a disgraced or exiled thief may seek shelter there; the attached graveyard houses the remains of every master thief in Guild history (those that could be recovered). There is a prepared place for Remy in the family mausoleum. These remains are sacred, and are taboo for any thief. Those who violate this trust are exiled and their bounties released to the Assassins Guild.

NEW YORK HALL. Thanks to its proximity to the X-Mansion and the easier access for Remy, the New York base receives a special mention. Just outside of Hell’s Kitchen and situated in the warehouse district, the New York guild hall specializes in transport and moving of goods. Quite a few of Remy’s assignments are dispatched through this hall to individual members as required, though he saves the majority of heavy management and paperwork for when he is at headquarters in New Orleans. ♢

LOCAL GUILD HALLS. Individual enclaves headed by a guildmaster have their own regional halls. In smaller, closer countries on the international scale, a central hall may serve as a base of operations for multiple nations at once. ♢

SERVICES PROVIDED.

For the most part, the Guild is an independent entity. It is available for hire - conditionally. Their current business strives to adhere to a better thieves’ code courtesy of Remy’s direction. 

Those who have found themselves wronged by the government, industries, or in general bigger, badder fish and can provide proof of injustice can employ the Thieves Guild. Select heists will be made for secrets, dirty money, dirty jewels, etc. with the Guild tithing half the recovered amount. Given the scale of most jobs, this still leaves clients with plenty to benefit off of, while granting the thieves who worked the job a generous fee.

Wealthy, selective clients are still able to hire master thieves for complex jobs with less moral attachment. Collectors can pay handsomely for extreme heists from well-known establishments, etc. 

Jobs with extreme difficulty go straight to Remy. If it interests him, he’ll often take the worst of them himself. It keeps up respect and cures quite a lot of boredom. If something doesn’t appeal to him, he tends to pick a master thief he knows will appreciate the task. ♢

MISSION.

Remy’s personal goal is to continue to have the Guild be a place for all those without a home to return to. A structure and refuge even for those on the streets, the way it was for him. Protection, and training, and providing even for those that ultimately choose to leave, and a place to grow for those who don’t.

However, he wants to keep it what it is, a proud tradition - while erasing the cult-like background and the hierarchies. He wants it to be able to grow, give back to the poor and remove undue privilege from the wealthy and corrupted. It will be a nation in its own right, with a citizenry made up only of the discarded and unwanted. ♢

THE UNIFIED GUILD.

As is likely obvious, this post mainly deals with the Thieves Guild before the unification occurs. However, most of the principles haven’t changed; the two sides remain fairly split in ideology, which is only to be expected after centuries of warring. It will take years for the hostilities to cease completely, exemplary leadership or no, and that is the simple truth. For further information on the Guilds together, there’ll have to be another post. ♢

What's your favorite episode of bfu and why? :) hope you feel better!

Thank you! I’m feeling better, to be honest.

I don’t think I have, lile-- one favorite in particular, to be honest. But I ted to lean more on Supernatural episodes because they are more fun for me, for some reason. So, I’ll chose one per season.

- 3 horrifying cases of ghosts and demons: was one of the first Supernatural episodes I saw and I loved it not only because it was long and interesting, but because they visited places I love. This includes the Island of the Dolls that stands in my city, and it was great to see them in Mexico City learning about a place that is so important to us.

Besides, who doesn’t love the mess that is the Sally House? That was the episode that made me said, “yeah I love these two, I’m watching this”.

- the bizarre voodoo world of new orleans: because this episode gave me all the feels. It’s a great episode for the story of the place and the way they are guided by this guest they have. I’ve read people who are close to what we learned in this episode said that the woman is fake, so I won’t say much about it/her but I will say that I enjoying seeing them trying to meet in the middle.

Shane’s little confession about feeling trapped inside his own head, that he really wants to believe in something beyond science, that was... amazing. If this was a totally acted and scripted TV show, that would had been one hell of a character development moment as much as Ryan feeling the room he was in, connecting with what spirit was supposed to be there, that was awesome and it makes me sad we don’t explore more of this in fanfics, lol.

-  the demonic goatman’s bridge: There’s no more chaoitic episode than this one. Everything about this episode is iconic and amazing, Shane was such a freakin’ delight during this ep-- like, fuck me, but this episode may actually be my favorite one ever. If there’s an episode to point out for our demon!Shane headcanons, it’s gotta be this one and that may be just one of the many reasons this is such a fave. LOVE THIS DEMON EPISODE!

Season 4 hasn’t finished yet, so I don’t want to chose one just yet. But so far, it’s gotta be the Bellaire House, lmao.
