I really love that a choice from way in the beginning of the book is brought up several times and actually effects the dialogue several chapters later.

Alenoah Week 2024: Day 3 - "TDWT Ending Rewrite"
The trek to the top of the volcano was, in layman's terms, agonizing.
Searing heat, somehow simultaneously swelteringly humid and suffocatingly dry, blistered at every inch of Noah's exposed skin and burned through his lungs like hot coals with every laboured breath. The sweat that would've been dripping from his exhausted body like a faulty faucet didn't even have the opportunity to form into pearl-shaped droplets before it evaporated against the overwhelming force of just how fucking hot it was.
And yet he'd made it.
He'd gotten there first, too.
Noah had somehow managed to out-slither the slippery fiend whilst the two were stumbling across the skipping stones of a lava lake, despite the weight of his pineapple dummy causing him to falter after almost every step.
The maw of the volcano bubbled and spat embers at his feet, just a few measly inches from the cynic himself. It was time to end it; the competition, the show, his… rivalry with Alejandro.
As if the mere thought of the Spaniard had somehow summoned him, Noah heard the tell-tale clicking of heeled boots against rock behind him quickly followed by harsh, laboured panting (not nearly as desperate as his own wheezing, but a far cry from the womanizer's usual composure). Alejandro's ponytailed hair rose from the plateaued peak of the volcano, followed by a pair of thick eyebrows furrowed against sweat-sheened skin, then a pair of furious sage green eyes- and sage was the most appropriate description Noah could think of, since they burned with a competitive fire comparable to the all-encompassing heat around them.
"It's over, Alejandro. I have the high ground."
Noah's voice was a hoarse, painful rasp, though whether it was from its unbearable dryness or the tenseness of the situation, he wasn't sure. He stood firmly at the edge of the volcano, searing light illuminating the edges of his form like a foreboding halo as he held Pinealejandro almost covetingly in a bridal carry, hovering the dummy over the scorching cavern of its imminent demise.
Alejandro- the human one, not the pineapple one- continued his unwavering ascent to the volcano's peak until he was but a few insignificant feet away from Noah. His shoulders visibly rose and fell with each huff of magma-scorched breath, and the barbaric snarl he bared towards the bookworm twisted his handsome features into something wild, alight with a passion that burned at white-hot as the lava below.
Then he roared.
"You underestimate my power!"
And lunged towards Noah, carelessly discarding his own pineapple dummy (comparatively twiggier and more feeble looking than Noah's own) as he cleared the space between them in the blink of a cinder-dusted eye.
"I will not lose to someone as infuriating as you!"
Before he could process what was even happening, Noah found himself scooped away from the edge of the volcano and lifted a few extra meters off of the ground, held victoriously above the latino in an overhead lift like he was some sort or glorified barbell. The shock of which inadvertently caused him to drop his own dummy, sending the construct tumbling into the bubbling, gaping chasm below until it plunged into the awaiting magma with a barely audible 'plop'.
For a brief tension-paused moment the two remained eerily still, almost frozen in place with disbelief (an impressive feat, considering it was far too fucking hot for anything to freeze atop the volcano).
Well.
That was that, then.
…It was sort of anticlimactic, really. Noah was almost disappointed.
"Um," The bookworm began, quickly schooling his surprise at being lifted and brandished like a javelin into his usual apathetic countenance, "Are you going to put me down, or…?"
Noah's enquiry was met a bark of high pitched laughter, a sound so entrenched in sardonic humour it was practically swimming in animosity.
"Ah, but Noah," Alejandro preened indulgently, as if he were speaking to a small child, and his snarl curled into a manic grimace. The archvillain's eyes were widened to their extreme, dying wisps of ember light flickering across his gaze which trailed from the waifish nerd held above his head to the boiling magma below.
"I still have a dummy to discard of."

Why do I feel like if I had to choose and enemies to lovers plot with Galadriel (Since Celeborn isn't here yet) I would choose Adar as the love interest over Sauron?

Tbh? I think the radiant emperor duology deserves more critique than it gets in its tag, so after stewing it over for a couple weeks and also discussing it with my friend, I have decided to do it myself.
So. Spoilers for She Who Became the Sun and He Who Drowned The World ahead.
First off, so nobody accuses me of hating the series, I liked the series. I'd say I'd give the first book a 4.5/5, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I like both books. I truthfully skipped the fisting scene, it triggered some dysphoria that I wasn't comfortable with personally but I don't have problem with it existing in the book, it's good where it is, no changes.
No, my critiques come mostly from the second book, hwdts. Which sucks because I absolutely loved Baoxiang in it, it's a well known fact that my ideal type is pretty, really mean, characters. ('What about Madam Zhang?!!!???!? Shes mean and pretty!!' I hear you ask. Give it a second cause i will get to my beloved madam zhang) So, my critiques are mostly organized as 'The first part I didn't like in Hwdtw that signals the thing that became my biggest issue, the bits in the middle that i did like along with the bits that I felt didn't really work well, and Act 3 which is where my issues really were exacerbated.'
By the end of book one, I had a general annoyance but acceptance that Ma Xiuying was a bit of a weak character, and not weak as in 'dang shes a woman and cant fight' or any other sexist way you may interpret that, but weak as in structurally, she didn't really have as much depth as other characters. I thought she didn't have as much time put into her character as others. And yeah you could have a million character analysis essays over Ma and her place in the story and etc, but for me, her setup for the next book as potentially having conflict with Zhu or her own morals was the most interesting part of Ma. In general I think a lot of people tend to overlook this flaw partly because Ma is a cis lesbian character and the main 'love interest' in a book that is usually marketed to people as sapphic, which yeah there is certainly a sapphic relationship in the book but I think saying it's a major part of the book is really giving the relationship a load bearing wall ot isn't strong enough to carry. The Radiant Emperor Duology is not a romance, first and foremost. To describe it as a wlw romance is gonna leave people who read ot specifically for that reason kinda dissappointed by the end of book 2.
My big critiques didn't start until book two, and a particular scene, though. Ma, at the start of book two, was generally filling the niche of 'nagging wife' to zhu, which yknow, is a fine place to start from. I was a little disappointed there was no further discussion of Ma's disapproval of the morality of Zhu's actions, and in fact the dead child was pretty much entirely forgotten by Ma in favor of being Zhu's wife. Which, yknow, sure.
The Scene I had issue with happened (Spoilers once again) after Zhu finally captures Ouyang and imprisons him at her base of operations. Ma, dressed in her empressly regalia enters his room with the intention of being the bigger person. She walks in, looks at the stripped down and humiliated general who killed her father and famously is also really a women hater, and tells him she forgives him for killing her father. And then she gets upset and cries when the prideful general who hates women gives her a dressing down and taunts her and is like 'I'm glad I killed your father'? She nearly cries because Ouyang was mean to her (notably only cause he was mean to her and didn't gracefully accept her forgiveness, not because he killed ehr father) and runs off to Zhu. And Zhu responds with 'Wow, he's just a weirdo, everyone likes you and everyone in existance immediately knows you're a good person and you change people.' Which, my friend suggested before she finished the book, was a case of Zhu placating Ma and dismissing her feelings which would be an interesting dynamic.
Really my hangups with this scene come from multiple parts.
1. Ma' few character traits including being observant and reading people really well (a thing she's praised for in book 1) and having good social intuition are completely thrown out by her thinking being alone with ouyang and forgiving him would be a good idea and then her being shocked and upset when he spat on her forgiveness. And
2. Zhu's response is never once treated by the text as her dismissing Ma and placating her, and Zhu's statement despite never being shown to be true before and that moment being the first time it's ever mentioned, ends up becoming Chekov's moral purity by the end of the book, where the plot hinges on Ma being able to magically heal a damaged character's mind enough for Zhu to win in the end. Which I will get back to. There's a lot of other stuff happening between here and the end.
So, before I get back to Ma and her role in the story, I'll address some other bits from after this scene. Both problems and things I enjoyed generally.
Madam Zhang and her parallels to Baoxiang and her being the absolute queen of dissociating really was interesting (before act 3). She was a very compelling character who I completely understood and felt positively about. She had a way more interesting relationship with gender imo than Ma did, especially in book 2. I didn't really like that she was overwhelmingly shown having sexual villence done to her, that felt weirdly like a punishment. But, I did like her a whole bunch, and I liked the look we got into her head. She was probably my second, maybe third, favorite character in the whole book until Act 3.
I really, really liked Ouyangs dynamic and relationship with Zhu. The weird sexual tension between them, their weird kinda nonsexual but also kinda very sexual S&M relationship. It was somehow the most sensual, sexual part of a book that featured Madam Zhang having sex with multiple people, and Zhu going down on Ma, and a lot of other mentions of sex or scenes involving sex. Tbh I feel like, in a way, Ma was left to the sidelines for most of the book because Ouyang became the primary 'love' interest for a hot second there and the only reason Ma could get her spot back was Ouyang and Zbu's separation. Also, from what I've seen when people talk about this book, they always kinda try to express Zhu and Ouyang's dynamic as very nonsexual and nonromantic, as platonic mostly. And there is no inherent superiority of romantic over platonic, but I think to insist that it is only platonic, and not a strange swirl of romantic, platonic, sexual, frustration and relief, and a swirl of familiarity and vulnerability all wrapped into one, is doing the dynamic a bit of a disservice. And ther is, imo, very clearly a subtle hint of romantic intent and interest on Ouyang's part before he realizes Zhu has a body he hates.
Which is also another point I didn't like. Ouyang and Zhu's relationship end felt off. The entire bit with the pirates felt off, but especially how Ouyang found out about Zbu's body, and how Zhu reacted. I think Ouyang finding out second hand, from a combination of being suspicious and from Jiang saying it, was a poor way for that to be revealed. I think there was a better way for that to happen that woyld have felt more like a betrayl to zhu than this did. The fact that Zhu and Ouyang were so in tune and could see each other perfectly, but this one thing was a blind spot for both of them because of how unaffected by gender Zhu was compared to how overaffected by gender Ouyang was is a really interesting thing to explore, an interesting disconnect between two character's whose entire basis for their relationship is 'like recognizes like'. I think Zhu seeing it as a betrayl would have been more impactful if she had presented this informatuon to Ouyang herself and been rejected than how it went down. And, I think her not realizing Ouyang would be disgusted that he felt connected and felt a sameness to someone with a body he found grotesque and that he feared would have been more interesting for zhu, who views herself outside of womanhood and didnt really think that other people would not see her outside of womanhood, if she was the one who told ouyang herself.
Also, less importantly, think going into Ouyangs annoyance that zhu kept moving his target further away was a good move but it wasn't expanded on as much for my taste. I also really liked it when (spoiler) Xu Da dies, and that entire part despite some minir bits, was extremely good in that Zhu finally has tasted loss. She had, up until that point, been riding a wave of positivity, she was the underdog who won over and over again despite all the odds and despite her own reckless choices. So I did appreciate that everything went wrong for her at least once. that would have been, imo if other things were changed, a good place to end a book two in a three book series. Which will make sense as to why I mention it im a bit.
I also didn't like how Ma was nonexistant unless the plot was like 'ok we need to remind people that Ma exists.'
And there's of course other stuff but those are the main points of acts 1 and 2 that i wasn't fond of or that i liked.
Act 3 is a wholely different behemoth which can be encapsulated with 'I wish it was longer but also different' (courtesy of the convo my friend and I had).
My friend and I both agreed that we liked this kind of courtly drama game it was playing. My friend doesn't tend to like the structure or writing style of a lot of the chinese wuxia, danmei, or courtly drama translated books i read, so it was nice to know that the genre content isn't the issue for her there.
The biggest problems I had with the ending though was 1. I think Baoxiang and Ma had an interesting dynamic despite it being really rushed and how distasteful I found the entire concept of Ma being such a good wholesome goody good good person that she could change Baoxiang, quiet his demons and fix him in some way. That was annoying in an otherwise interesting dynamic. And 2. I think Madam Zhang's character traits and cleverness and all that were wiped away to make her inexplicably jealous of Ma in a way that I don't think fit her character and just served to fit a trope of jealous empress who hates the favored concubine.
So, here's my major proposed changes.
1. Ma gets sent to Khanbaliq extremely early on. Like, act one maybe after ouyang is captured early. This serves three purposes. A. Ma has something to do and is more present in the story. this could be a good xhance to let her actually feel frustrated or upset at Zhu in some tangible way that needs to be resolved or talked thru eventually. B. she gets more time to build a relationship with Baoxiang, whose entire defeat hinges on him having a strong connection with her. and C. Her absence in the other parts of the book feel less like she's being ignored or forgotten. It makes Zhu's lack of haste more than just a way to annoy Ouyang, and turns it into an interesting moral choice. Should she rush to Khanbaliq to save Ma or trust that Ma will be ok in favor of gaining power? Her lack of haste means Ouyang leaves, depressed, and she loses Xu Da, all while she doesn't even have the assurance that Ma is ok, she is truly at her lowest point with nobody with her. If Ma is in Khanbaliq and that's explored, then Zhu and Ouyang can also explore their dynamic without Ma feeling a bit like she is battling for Zhu's attention.
2. Madam Zhang is suspicious of Ma, or feels actually tangibly threatened by Ma. In act 3, Madam Zhang's anger towards Ma feels really out of place. She got exactly what she wants, she is empress, her emperor isn't interested in removing her from her position and her position isn't threatened by anyone. Baoxiang won't get rid of her, he won't demote her, he has shown zero sign of ever even considering it. So, why is Madam Zhang jealous of Ma? Imo, especially since she very clearly has dissociated into oblivion and has no love or affection for anyone anymore, and no real desire or motivation to secure her position further aside from maybe producing an heir to make sure shes taken care of after Baoxiang dies, there's no reason for her to be inextricably jealous of Ma. It kinda just erases all of Madam Zhang's political savvy and cunning into jealous, petty woman, and that sucks. If she was suspicious of Ma's intention, or Baoxiang genuinely expressed spmething that actively threatened her position, her hatred of Ma would make sense, but instead she hates Ma cause Ma is ugly and spends every night with Baoxiang. She hated rice buckets concubine cause that concubine used a lot of funds and competition genuinely made her position less stable. She needs better motivation for hating Ma.
3. As I mentioned earlier, Zhu needs to be the one to tell Ouyang that she does not have a dick. That's just all around better, it feels more like a betrayl to bare your secrets and be rejected, etc etc.
4. The duology should have been a trilogy, with book 3 starting when Zhu is at her lowest, ouyang is dead, ma is in khanbaliq, Xu Da is dead, a new guy is the emperor. This is where a book three should have started. in a series that has so many important characters, i feel like it needs more space. she's in a 10 gallon tank when really she needs a 30 gallon tank. Lots of it, especially towards the end of book 2, felt rushed and the extra book will absolutely push that back a bit and make it less rushed.
Anyways that's my critique of The Radiant emperor duology. Once Again, I liked the series, its one of my favorites i've read all year. I don't dislike it, and having a critique or opinion about something doesnt mean I didn't like the book or understand the book (because obviously if i understood it i would understand why its flawless). I liked it, there are things I wish were different, that's it.

It took Luigi about half a day to reach the castle, the sun could be seen along the horizon peaking over soft, lush green hills that seemed to stretch on forever. His attention was on the castle ahead of him. Princess Peach and her handmaiden, Toadette, were already at the gate waiting for him. They wasted no time ushering him inside, leading him to an empty room. Peach walked to the center of the room while Toadette closed and locked the door behind them.
“Alright Princess, I’m here, can you please, tell me what’s going on now?” Luigi said following the princess to the center of the room.
“I need you to attend an upcoming ball for me, I must leave the kingdom posthaste. I’m needed elsewhere, some personal issues have arisen and can no longer be delayed. Toadette will help you make sure you’re well-prepared for the ball and any other situations that may occur in my absence. I will be writing you as soon as I arrive at my first stop, the Flower Kingdom, in Sarasa Land, as I promised to keep you and Toadette updated.”
“Princess, you’re still keeping us in the dark, why can nobody know about what we’re doing?”
She was nervous, so she took a second to think before responding, “Mario would try to stop me, he wouldn’t approve of it. I cannot risk anyone preventing me from doing what must be done. I apologize to both you and Toadette for being so vague, but please, trust me.”
Luigi sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. Going against his better judgment, he decided to trust her. He dropped his stuff onto the ground and turned towards Toadette who was now approaching him.
“Alright, what first?”
Toadette spoke up, “We need to get you fitted to Her Highness’ garments, we have also prepared a wig and a cover for the lower half of your face. Follow me, Sir Luigi, the Princess will wait here for when we’re finished.”
Toadette took him by the hand and hurriedly led Luigi to the Princess' chambers. The garments Luigi needed to try on were lying on the bed, seemingly prepared before Luigi’s arrival. Toadette instructs him to change into the chemise and she’ll take his old clothes to his other belongings and then lace his corset. Luigi went behind a dressing screen in the room and handed Toadette his clothes.
He was left alone to think about what he’d gotten himself into, getting himself in the chemise and stockings. He was beyond embarrassed, he couldn’t bear looking at himself in the mirror on the opposite side of the dressing screen. He knew he would have to at some point but chose to wait until he was in the full disguise. Unfortunately for Luigi, Toadette returned motioning for him to sit and lift his arms. She made quick work getting the corset on him and then promptly lacing it.
“So, what do you know about the ball, Toadette?” Luigi asked, breaking the silence.
“I know that it takes place on the Winter Solstice and it’s held in Her Highness’ honor. And… that we’re going to need to do something about that mustache…”
“Absolutely not, this is where I draw the line-”
“Sir Luigi we don’t have a choice, you can’t use a fan all the time to conceal the lower half of your face.” Toadette was stern.
“I want answers from the princess before we discuss this any further.” Luigi stood up and marched to the door, irritation and fear plastered to his face.
Toadette chased after him, calling out in a vain attempt to get him to slow down or stop. Luigi threw open the doors to the Princess’ bedroom and found she was nowhere to be seen. His face paled and Toadette, panting behind him, was confused until she caught up to him.
“Oh… oh no.” Toadette gasped, her hands covering her mouth.
Luigi turned towards Toadette fighting tears, “Toadette. I’m done playing mind games with you tell me EVERYTHING.” Luigi’s voice cracked.
Toadette shrunk, “All I know is that since she was pulled aside and notified of the ball, she hasn’t been the same. I don’t know what about it has got her so worked up, she said the ball was celebrating the Winter Solstice, however, I doubt it now. I swear I know nothing more, she’s been unusually distant as of late. She was just here! She was here when I dropped off your clothes.” she sounded like she was one second away from crying.
Luigi frantically began looking for the belongings he had brought with him. Gone. All of it was gone.
Luigi is overcome with panic, “She deserted us… She-”
“Sir Luigi, we must get back to the fitting now that the princess is no longer here.” Toadette regained her composure, the gravity of the new situation donning on her.
Luigi did not attempt to resist and followed her to put on the rest of his new clothes.
He looked at himself in the mirror while Toadette laced the back of the bodice and adjusted his wig. It was uncanny how much he resembled the princess.
“Sir Luigi, we must remove your mustache now. Do you know what they’ll do to us if they find out we let the real princess disappear?” Toadette’s tone is stern and serious.
“How are you going to explain the nose?” Luigi scoffed, folding his arms.
“We can say you were stung or bitten by something if anyone asks, now hold still, I don’t wish to nic your face.” She responded quickly.
It seems she had thought everything through, she turned him to face her and began to prep his face for shaving. Luigi was still fighting against it until she brought out a blade. He froze and she took the opportunity to shave his mustache off in two flicks of the wrist.
Luigi whipped around and began mourning once he saw a clean-shaven face staring back at him. He crumpled to the ground clutching his face, silent sobs racking his body.
“I do apologize, Sir Luigi, it had to be done. I’m hoping you will not have to do this for too long. The princess ordered me to make you look the most like her, including mustache removal.” Toadette apologized, her voice was sincere and remorseful.
She took this as her cue to leave as Luigi didn’t respond. After hearing the door click shut, he couldn’t silence his sobs any longer. He moved to the bed, his crying filled the now empty room.

why are you, as an adult in 2024, still hung up on reylo. why are you still mocking the shippers. why do you believe yourself to be superior only because you dislike a stupid ship from a fucking space fairytale. girl (gnc) get a grip
#it's ridiculous. this ship is... stupidly cliché. like if you know fandoms at all#you could easily guess why people would be into it. hello?? have you tried to watch tfa without your hate-on-kyle-ron goggles?#did you watch their scenes together? you don't have to like something to recognize the hints#hell. at the time i didn't really like jonerys but i realized they were going to be a thing when i read agot in 2011#like folks. it's been nearly TEN LONG YEARS. let it go. LET IT FUCKING GOOOO#and for the lucy/cooper shippers out there who think reylos are (again) delusional when they compare the two ships:#no. *you* are being delusional only because you think reylo is unsexy and uncool (which is your right to think btw. obv)#if you can't see why someone would like both of these pairings for similar reasons... idk what to say honestly#people compared it to hannigram... honestly. again i see why they would appeal to anyone who's into both ships#i really do. but... unpopular opinion (since i'm more of a clannibal fan than i could ever be of reylo):#they are more similar to reylo than will/hannibal. there i said it#i'm not talking about the writing (admittedly the quality of it was questionable). i'm talking about tropes#never mind that imo the ghoul is more akin to vader than kylo but whatever#hannibal is an unapologetic kind of villain. he's not gonna have a redemption arc and that's okay#cooper is an antivillain who used to be a good man and became a disfigured cruel bastard. a parody of himself#lucy is him. him before the bombs dropped before he discovered the person he trusted the most wanted to commit genocide#nice. moral. polite. infused with the Good Old American Values™. he's basically her dark side#all of this is very hannigram/clannibal. i'm not denying it at all#but what'll likely happen is that lucy's actions will have a positive influence on the ghoul and remind him of what it means to be a man#and that's way more reylo-like. sorry.#beauty&thebeast/villain with some hidden good in him+morally righteous heroine/enemies to lovers etc.#i mean. hello??..... having said that. i'm not so much of a reylo shipper anymore and tbh never was. i really liked it at the time#but i was never fond of the st era. my fav characters are vader and leia and revan from the old eu. just saying#*and* it's also not impossible lucy gets darker with the ghoul as her traveling companion. in fact i wouldn't dislike it at all#if done well i mean#but i would still like for people to be intellectually honest and less puerile. god knows i have my notps#but i really don't give a fuck about the shippers. good for them i guess? i have better taste lmao but that's heavily subjective#val rambles in the tags#val speaks#txt

This song is making me want to start yet another fic to never finish,, "Tell me... Where is your hideout? Who are we running from? I'm starting to think that you were right, and now I'm afraid of letting go of your hand...." Maul giving up on his Mandalore plan and deciding to just stalk Kenobi to tell him about his vision. Staying illegally in Obi-Wan's room because I love putting these guys in situations (and because Maul would NOT leave him alone until Obi-Wan actually accepted Maul is right, which he won't). Following Obi-Wan to Utapau and helping him escape after the clones attack, feeling equal parts vindicated and enraged (because he was proved right but Sidious still won). Them being on the run together....

Amours Deception
Chapter One
---
Henchman stood in line with the others, chest heaving as sweat practically poured off of her. The training day had been grueling and long but that was nothing new. Most days were, though they were more rewarding that way. Even so, she was still dying for it to end so that she could hit the showers.
"Well, I'd say that was an acceptable show of skill today," Villain strutted in front of them like an illustrious peacock. His ego was more grating than usual in that moment. "For most of you."
She grit her teeth as he made direct eye contact with her. Henchman would tear his arms off and beat him with them if she could.
His eyes moved away, "You are all dismissed; be here tomorrow at five am sharp for the heist. Anyone lagging behind will be used for next week's target practice."
As her coworkers filed out she felt a hand on her arm. Against her exhaustion, and desire for the showers, she turned around to face Villain. He waited until the door shut before pulling her into him. Henchman wasn't in the mood for his antics but she let him pepper her face with kisses anyway, reluctance clear in her stiff posture.
"Oh come now, don't be like this!"
"I don't want to deal with you tonight Villain."
"Why is my favorite henchie being so cold? Was it the extra laps?" His light tone only further raked against her broiling nerves.
Henchman yanked back as he went in to kiss her lips. "Don't. Don't mock me like this."
Villain stared incredulously at her a moment before shoving her away with a disgusted grunt. She stumbled slightly, not expecting the shift in weight. "Mock you? Since when have I mocked you?"
"Since we started-!" Henchman gestured wildly. "-whatever this is!"
"If you think me showing you affection is mockery that's not my fault. I thought you would like being treated nice after a hard day." His soft brown eyes burned with fury.
"You mean after you insult me in front of my peers? Embarrass me and then make out as you please? Yes, I love the mixed messages that sends. They make me feel very liked and not at all confused!"
Villain's shoulders bunched up, face twitching as his anger threatened to break out violently. "Well if you would apply yourself in training I wouldn't need to embarrass you any more than you embarrass yourself!"
Every ounce of blazing rage extinguished in a moment. Henchman turned and yanked the door open. "I'm taking my shower and going home. Have a nice night."
The door shut on his sputtered response.
Her fellow henchmen were starting to file out as she made her way to the locker rooms. A few of them whispered well wishes, assuming Villain had held her back to chew her out.
How she wanted that to be the truth. It would be better then dealing with a sickening pool of emotions Villain stirred in her gut.
A haze filled her mind as she stripped from her training clothes, grabbing her soap and hair products from her locker before going to the shower farthest from the door. The hot water pulled her out of it just enough to notice one of the newest recruits staring at her.
"What?"
The girl, Marcy was her name, gave her a wavering smile. "I think you did great today. I couldn't take down any of my opponents."
She remembered. The poor girl had been bodied in less than a minute three rounds in a row. She managed five minutes at one point but it was clear she wasn't a very physical kind of person.
And Villain hadn't gotten after her once.
Bile burned Henchman's and she let out a hollow laugh. "Takes practice. You'll be breaking bones soon enough."
"Probably not," Marcy shut off her shower. "I think I'm going to get a transfer. I don't like all the physical stuff. Not good at it either. You are though!"
Henchman sighed a bit. "Not how Villain sees it."
"Well he's stupid not to." Henchman turned to look at Marcy again. Her auburn hair was plastered to her face but when they were training the short locks had constantly swished in front of her eyes. Probably one reason for the lack of skill actually.
Her eyes were an oddly distracting green, earnest and so painfully trusting. Henchman ignored the squirm in her guts as Marcy blinked innocently at her.
She let out another sigh. "Tell you what, I can give you some extra lessons. Maybe wait a few weeks before you decide you're no good for this part of the job?"
"Really? Oh, thank you!" Marcy seemed to forget they were both in a vulnerable sort of state, rushing forwards to give Henchman a hug. She quickly pulled back with blush going up to her ears. "I am so sorry, I wasn't thinking! I'm just-...Maybe I should-...I need to head home. But thank you for the offer!"
Henchman watched her go with a smile tugging the corner of her lips. That girl was going to get eaten alive eventually. Hopefully she could push that off.
Once the showers were blissfully quiet again she turned the water up until it turned her skin red. Better to get a shower this hot at work, considering her crappy water heater at home couldn't handle it.
It didn't take long for Henchman to end up sitting on the bench to give her aching muscles a break. Unfortunately her mind wandered back to Villain.
Their...situation had begun a few months before. He'd pulled her aside and praised her for her work. At first she had been suspicious but he hadn't stopped snatching her away for stolen moments.
His honeyed words didn't last long. After the physical side of their relationship started a month in he was always quick to go in for a kiss but his words, especially in front of others, were harsh. Henchman found herself reprimanded more than the others. Sometimes for slips that hadn't happened!
Rage and confusion and desire sloshed around inside her, only succeeding in making her feel sick. Just when she was sure he only saw her as a bit of fun he would bring back the compliments and she would fell back into it.
Maybe he didn't see her that way but he only noticed that it bothered her when it got to the boiling point. That's what she told herself often.
He wasn't toying with her. She was just expecting too much softness from a man who routinely murdered people. It was her fault.
But it still felt like she wasn't anything more than stress relief. After fights, before big heists, especially when Hero taunted him. A part of her hated that woman for it.
Henchman watched the water flow off of her and head for the drain. Steam started getting thick enough to block off quite a bit of her vision.
So lost in thought she didn't notice the figure moving towards her until it was almost on her.
"Henchman?" The voice was gentle.
An undignified shriek slipped past her lips. She quickly went to trying to cover her bare body, unsuccessfully at that.
"I've seen you naked before." Villain's tone was flat.
"That was with my consent you creep!" Henchman hissed as she threw the bar of soap at his head. He dodged it easily.
Villain was finally close enough she could see the remorseful expression he held. "I just came to apologize. What I said...it was uncalled for. You're not embarrassing."
Her anger tapered down. Villain rarely apologized; there was no reason to keep being hostile to him. She felt more sure about that when he stepped forward, soaking his perfectly quaffed hair and pristine suit, and cupped her face reverently.
"Do you think you can forgive me?"
She leaned into the touch. A part of her wanted to say no but he looked so pathetic sopping wet that Henchman couldn't help laughing a bit. "Yes, I can forgive you."
His smile lit up her insides. Henchman pushed forwards for a kiss, leaning into Villain more as his fingers tangled into the locks on the back of her head.
It was only when she made it home and collapsed to her rickety bed that Henchman felt the overwhelming need to cry. How had she forgiven him for speaking down to her like that again?
---
Hero rolled her eyes as Superhero wrote down a few notes of her report.
"And you're sure none of them suspect you? This offer for lessons could be a trap."
"Superhero. You trusted me with this mission; trust me that I haven't blown my cover in the first week of it."
His nostrils flared. "I do trust you, but we can't underestimate them."
"Oh please," Hero snickered as she remembered Henchman's face stepping into the showers. "That woman didn't notice anything outside of her miserable self. I think her and Villain are having some relationship issues."
Superhero laughed with her. "Of course she is, she's trying to get close with Villain. That's just asking to be used. Not that it will matter much soon, when we manage to get them all in cells."
"Actually, I think we could put Henchman in the rehabilitation program. She'd be a decent asset to the agency." Hero said with a thoughtful nod.
Her superior snorted another laugh. "I'll note it, but that I doubt. Go ahead and head home."
"Yes sir."
Hero was grateful when her front door came into view. She hadn't accounted for how tiring it would be to fake incompetence in a professional setting.
She wiped all thoughts of work from her mind as she stepped through the door into her living room. The babysitter she'd hired jumped to his feet.
"Mrs. Duller, you're a little late. Everything okay?"
"Yes, just got swamped at work. How's Daughter?"
"Sleeping like a bear in winter." He said with a bright smile. Hero returned it as she paid him and bid him goodnight.
Just as promised her little darling was curled under her covers, snoring just a little. Hero placed a kiss to her forehead. It took quite a lot not to laugh as Daughter scrunched her face at the contact.
"Sleep tight sweetie." Hero whispered before making her way to her own room.
She had to get a lot of sleep before the heist the next day. Especially because she had to try to thwart it without becoming suspicious. Something told her Henchman might not be so easy to fool when it came to actual jobs.

as i continue working on Festival for False Heroes (currently drafting chapter 3, but i also have excerpts from the 50% mark), i can confirm that what was originally planned as an unrequited love fic is now definitely not unrequited
that said. i'm still not letting them get together in this one. all the drama, dammit

I want to know more about them and their tomb colonist husband 👀 the little picture of them was very adorable!
Awwww thank you!!!! I'm so glad you like them they're fun to draw together
I originally created Doe to be more of a Sherlock Holmes type, solving mysteries and seeing the pieces of things that might not necessarily always be there. He likes to stop horrible things from happening to people, and learn all he can about everything.
In the same sort of vein, Darcy was created to just be....awful. To put it bluntly. He's a surgeon (or he was. He went to school for it, and he's actually very good at it) who just does whatever he thinks is fun or alternatively, funny. He really hates staying at the colonies, and he equally likes committing both crime and murder so he tends to hang around London more than most colonists because he also....just does not care what people think of him. His ass will walk right into a bar that refuses to serve colonists and force them to get him a drink.
Doe is similar in his brashness but in more of a "fucks up social interactions on accident" sort of way. So he gets sent to the colonies....quite a bit.
They met originally in a more "Doe keeps having to stop this asshole from creating more work for him" sort of way, but they also realized they just...liked talking when they weren't trying to fuck up each other's days (That bit started at the colonies where they were both bored out of their minds). Eventually it evolved into more of a "Darcy causing problems as a reason to hang out with Doe" thing and it went on from there.
Their couple activities include:
Going dancing
Causing problems for each other when they're bored
Running various social cons to see what would happen
Having coffee together in the morning
Throwing rocks at anyone who looks like they might work for Mr. Pages
Sitting on the beach

It has been about two months since Luigi had begun his stay at the princess’—well, his— castle until she returns. He and Toadette still aren’t on the best terms but she seems genuine with her apologies and remorse. He will be able to forgive her in time, since then she’s been his rock and confidant. He’s adjusted well to the life of the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, maybe even liked it. However, the most difficult part for him was shaking off his chronic nervousness about everything around him.
Luigi was sitting in front of a grand mirror with Toadette showing Luigi different dresses for him to pick from for the Winter Solstice ball that was to be held after sundown. He was barely paying her any mind until Toadette spoke loudly, “Don’t fret Your Highness, you’ll do fine, you only need to look the part and occasionally converse with your guests. Why don’t you pick out which gown you’d like to wear for this evening?”
Luigi nodded, his nerves slightly eased, “You’re right, I would like to wear the blue and pink dress with long gloves and a shawl.” Luigi sighed standing up and beginning the elaborate process of getting dressed.
Toadette was making the final adjustments to Luigi’s outfit when they heard a knock at the door, informing them it was nearly time for the guests to arrive. Toadette accompanied Luigi to the vast soon-to-be-filled room to sit on his throne until the first guests arrived. Not long after The doors opposite from him began to open and the guests came flooding in. He stood up as the first guests approached; lords and ladies from the Mushroom Kingdom. He stopped paying attention after the Royal family from the BeanBean Kingdom made their entrance. He finally understood why the Princess didn’t want to be here for this, it was terribly boring so far.
He saw the room slowly fill up with people dancing and chatting around the edges, a gentle melody echoing and silencing their chatter. He envied them. He was taken out of his thoughts when all of the guests had been introduced, allowing him to sit down once more to eat and enjoy the party as much as he could.
Another hour had passed before the music was stopped and the announcer gained the attention of everyone once again.
“Thank you all for being here tonight for our Winter Solstice ball. In addition to the Solstice, we’re holding it in honor of the new happy couple! We’re thrilled to announce the marriage between our very own Princess Peach of the Mushroom Kingdom and-”
“The King of Koopas, King Bowser.” A large reptilian beast guffawed behind Luigi.
Luigi stiffened, too frightened to react or even look back at him. Bowser took that as an opportunity to grab Luigi, toss him over his shoulder, and make a mad dash toward the nearest exit with minimal resistance, allowing him to disappear into the night.
Luigi snapped out of the shock and began yelling and fighting him to no avail. He continued for about ten minutes before giving up and letting out an irritated huff.
“Where are we going?” Luigi asked, his voice hoarse from screaming. He was doing the best he could to prop himself up, but settled for resting his head on his arm that’s now propped against Bowser’s back.
“Home, of course. We’re going to the docks first. I have a ship waiting for us.” Bowser explained, clearly pleased with himself.
Luigi sighed in defeat, there wasn’t much he could do at the moment. There was no way he could get away from him between blowing his cover and his current attire. Between the heels and puffy fabric he wouldn’t be able to get far. Oh, and Toadette would kill him if something were to happen to the dress.
Bowser noticed Luigi’s change in demeanor. “Don’t act so disappointed Peaches, I told you that I would come back for you. Don’t worry it won’t be much longer until we reach the boat,” he said, failing to lighten the mood.
Luigi remained silent, ignoring his kidnapper, his head swirling with many thoughts and feelings— fear, contempt, exhaustion. The king was blissfully unaware of Luigi’s mental gymnastics and decided to continue, “I made sure to have someone get your little handmaiden— I know you’re very fond of her after all. I have also arranged for us to be housed in close quarters with one another-”
At this point Luigi stopped listening, Toadette is in this with him now? He feels a little better knowing that he’s not alone and will still have help maintaining the facade. He can’t get caught, especially not by King Boswer. Luigi shudders, he doesn’t want to think about what might happen if the Koopa King were to find out.
“Are you cold Princess?” Bowser paused, placing Luigi down, and taking off his coat to give to him, then offering his hand. Luigi puts the coat around him and hesitates before taking his hand. He decided it would be better to try to stay on Bowser’s good side for the time being.
For the first time Bowser and Luigi got a better look at one another and time seemed to stop for just a moment. This was the only time Luigi had seen Bowser outside of aiding his brother in keeping the peace between kingdoms. He was….handsome? Luigi could not tear his eyes away, what about him is so alluring? He was tall, strong, his hair the shade of the most passionate of fires, hands so large to-
“You look more radiant than normal Princess…” Bowser begins. “Even with your swollen nose, you look like a goddess on earth glowing in the light of the new winter moon.”
He was sincere, his eyes were wide and full of an emotion Luigi couldn’t seem to comprehend, as he was still staring helplessly, now flushed. He opened his mouth to speak but was interrupted by rustling behind them. They both turn their heads towards the sound, releasing them from their shared enrapturement.
A bit more rustling occurred before a small figure emerged from the flora; a koopa blissfully unaware at the verbal assault awaiting him.
Bowser’s face contorts to unbridled rage. You could nearly see smoke as he exhales before going absolutely ballistic, screaming at the koopa for interrupting, paying no mind to Luigi anymore.
Luigi recoiled, disgusted with Bowser now. Concluding that his moment of weakness was nothing more than the winter moonlight. Now fully in control of his thoughts and actions, he decides that now would be a good time to try to escape.
Luigi wasn’t sure which direction to run in but ultimately decided any direction away from the scene unfolding would be best.
Bowser had soon finished his verbal onslaught and took a deep breath to regain his composure. With a calm smile on his face, he turned back towards the Princess but quickly realized she was gone. Panic. Sheer panic flooded his senses.
Luigi had only been running for a few minutes at most however it had felt like it had been hours. He would have kept running if he hadn’t tripped over his own foot and twisted his ankle. Luigi cried out and laid there for a second before looking around. His blood ran cold. In an unfortunate turn of events, the direction he chose led him to the very docks he was desperately trying to get away from.
He was quickly surrounded by members of Bowser’s court bombarding him with questions, making his head spin, until a voice roared above theirs, “WHERE IS SHE??”
Silence followed as the crowd backed away from Luigi who was sobbing at this point. Bowser’s face dropped and rushed over to Luigi.
“Peaches?!? Are you okay? What happened?” Bowser’s face was painted with worry and concern.
In between sobs and sniffles Luigi cries, “You were yelling at that poor koopa, my dress is ruined, and I twisted my ankle in these ACCURSED HEELS-” More sobs wrack his form.
Bowser was completely taken aback, “I sincerely apologize Peaches, you’re never emotional so this must be important to you. I’ll have someone fix your dress and-”
Luigi is seeing red. Him? Emotional? He gritted his teeth together, “You listen here, Your Majesty-” Luigi tries to stand up. “I would love to see you go through a day as me without losing your temper at the slightest of inconveniences. You have no right to call ME emotional when you act like a spoiled toddler if something doesn’t go exactly as you had envisioned it.” He was truly riled up at this point, beyond thinking of the consequences his current actions will lead him.
“Now if you’ll excuse me I would like to get something to eat and then return to my chambers for the night without you since you so rudely took me before I could even taste the hors d'oeuvres at the ball.”
Bowser was completely shocked, but quickly smiled, “There's the Peach I know and adore. I’ll have everything arranged for you.”
Luigi scoffed as Bowser picked him up and carried him onto the ship. He takes Luigi to his quarters where there’s a physician and an attendant waiting for him.
“Your Majesties.” The physician bowed down to Luigi and Bowser. To which Bowser waved him off and set Luigi down on the settee against the wall.
“I need you two to check and tend to her ankle and bring her favorite dishes. Once that’s been done leave her be.” Bowser sternly instructed, standing tall.
They bowed to Bowser once more, causing him to turn around and leave, the attendant following not long after.
The physician brought a small table over towards Luigi so he could prop his leg up and allow them to examine his ankle.
It didn’t take the physician long to examine Luigi's now swollen ankle. Telling him that it was sprained and needed to stay off his feet for the next couple of weeks. They wrapped Luigi’s foot in a splint, then bid him a farewell, closing the door behind them.
Luigi looked at his foot, frustrated that he ruined any chance of escaping on his own. He couldn’t believe how badly he had messed up in such quick successions. Not fighting or running at the ball, finding a chance to escape but ran in the wrong direction, which had caused him to be immobile for a few weeks minimum. He really has hit rock bottom at this point.
Luigi heard a knock at the door and the attendant from before came in with a large tray of food. He pulled a small table over to where Luigi was sitting and set the tray down. He bowed to him then left without a word.
As soon as the door clicked shut Luigi moved the entire table closer and noticed that Bowser had his cooks prepare a several course meal, which he wasted no time eating. Then he moved to the large bed with great care as to not injure himself further.
Luigi was exhausted, his mind replayed the instances of the past evening as he laid down. Neither Princess Peach or Toadette had mentioned an arranged marriage to him, or even hinted at it. Could this be the reason why she had Luigi take her place? Has she found someone, or was this the final straw? Luigi can’t say, after all, he doesn’t know who he is allegedly marrying. Obviously it wasn’t Bowser considering their past and the fact he literally made an event of him kidnapping the ‘princess’.
Luigi put his hands over his face when his mind shifted to King Bowser. He’s so embarrassed with his thoughts and shift in character. How could he have let himself feel that way about an ill-tempered tyrant, even if only for a moment. He couldn’t deny that Bowser was attractive, determined, and confident—all qualities Luigi admired on their own— but his treatment towards others was repulsive at best.
Luigi yawned, maybe he could change that… and with that final incoherent thought he drifted into a dreamless sleep.
