Hello Mr Atoms, I've finally built up enough confidence to ask you a question, my anxiety gets the best of me most days. I've been a fan of the grim adventures of Billy and Mandy since it first aired. My favorite character is Jack O'Lantern, and so my question for you is where did the inspiration for Jack come from? I know he's loosely based on the old Irish tale : Stingy Jack, but where did the silly , hilarious, personally come from? Because I've been curious about it for almost 20 years, lol. I have quite a few questions about the character, but I will save them for another day.
No worries! These are anxious times.
The special was written by myself and storyboarded/written by Paul McEvoy (It's a Paul day) and Brett Varon, with Paul taking the first half and Brett taking the second. They cross-pollinated jokes and shots, and I think most of Jack's personality came from Paul's love of spooky old European folk tales and Brett's love of dumb jokes.
The final ingredient is Wayne Knight. I was really worried because he was a last minute replacement for Gary Oldman (he was going to do it before being called in to play Sirius Black) and I wasn't sure what I was getting into. Thankfully, Wayne's wheezy laugh pulled it off and we ended up with a fun character.

So I’m reading Jurassic Park for the first time and … the movie was perfectly casted oh my god. I can’t help but picture them all when I read because when I tell you they captured the energy so well, I mean it.
Also something about Alan and Ellie meeting Ian and “we’re a trio now. Besties forever” the second they meet is iconic. The squad ever actually.

I’ve been doing a lot better about drawing more for myself than for likes lately but it’s still hard not to care sometimes. I appreciate the support I do get sooo much, there’s just always the thought in the back of your head with social media, maybe this will be the big one. Even when you draw silly cartoons. So every time I make a post and the likes don’t immediately start rolling in, I think of this meme and remind myself that’s not why I draw. Not a bad excuse to watch the first two Jurassic Park movies either.

1993 trailer for Jurassic Park. Note the lack of any CGI dinosaurs, nor any of the now-famous John Williams score.

Oppenheimer easter egg in Jurassic Park
I was beyond the moon to find out about Jurassic Park's return to theaters for it's 30th anniversary, because it's one of my favorite movies, and I've never had the chance to see it on the big screen. It was just as epic as you would expect. But one of the upsides to seeing it that big is that you start to notice details that there's no way you would see otherwise. For example, I saw this picture taped on Dennis Nedry's computer...
Tumblr media
And even though it was only on the screen for a few seconds, I could have sworn I was looking at Oppenheimer. I haven't seen the Oppenheimer movie, nor have I seen any real life photos of him. But I just had this gut feeling that that's who it was. And sure enough, when I looked it up later, guess what I found:
Tumblr media
And oh my gosh, Nedry having that picture just adds so much to his character. Bear with me here on my analysis, because once again, I haven't seen Oppenheimer and I'm not that familiar with the real life events. Nedry is very much a character who feels unappreciated for the great things he is doing. It gets brought up pretty frequently throughout the movie, and it's such a big point that he even decides to betray Hammond because of it. Obviously it's highly debatable on whether or not Oppenheimer did "great" things (I personally think that nuclear weapons should never have been created, but I guarantee there are people who disagree with me). But the point is that NEDRY idolizes him. Nedry probably sees a scientist who discovered something world-changing and wasn't given admiration for it. And he can relate to that!
And then if you take a step back from Nedry and look at some overall themes, there's that whole "your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should " connection. Scientists bring back dinosaurs, and the dinosaurs kill people, which makes their choice to bring them back objectively bad. Same thing happened with the creation of the atomic bomb. They were so focused on accomplishing their goal that they didn't pause and think about the tragic consequences that would follow. (I mean, I'm sure they knew people would die, but probably not how many and how sickening of an effect it would have on those who survived).
Anyway, discovering that detail was really cool for me because I don't think I would have noticed it if A). I hadn't gone to see Jurassic Park in theaters, and B). If Oppenheimer hadn't come out for me to even know who he was or what he looked like. I have such a deep respect for filmmakers and their dedication to creating characters who feel like believable people.
