6 Strange But Powerful Habits That Make You Instantly Magnetic
Tumblr media
Attraction doesn't always come with a megaphone. Some of the most magnetic individuals have habits that feel odd at first, but these habits tend to be full of unexpected emotional intelligence, confidence, and charm. Let's deconstruct six such habits and why they are so effective.
Pausing Before You Speak This may feel uncomfortable at first, as if you don't know what to say. But in fact, pausing before answering demonstrates that you're reflective, engaged, and secure enough not to fill silence with sound. It also makes your words feel more intentional, allowing others to listen and pay attention.
Asking Deep Questions Early Leaping into profound, meaningful subjects immediately can be overwhelming. But it puts you head and shoulders above superficial small talk immediately. Asking questions such as "What gets you going?" or "What are you most passionate about currently?" demonstrates curiosity and emotional depth—two attributes people are naturally attracted to.
Staring a Bit Longer Most individuals shy away from long eye contact because it seems too personal. However, maintaining someone's eye contact for a second or two longer than usual indicates that you're grounded and not intimidated by the connection. It generates trust and makes the interaction more compelling and engaging.
Laughing at Yourself Self-deprecating humor is also unexpectedly appealing since it exhibits confidence. Laughing at your flaws or foibles means you don't take yourself seriously and that you are confident about who you are. This instantly relaxes others and makes you more human.
Issuing a "No" Without Over-Explaining Most individuals feel the need to explain their boundaries. But firm and respectful "no's" without lengthy explanations emit self-respect. This type of boundary-setting demonstrates you respect your time, energy, and priorities, which others naturally respect (and quite often envy).
Enjoying Your Own Company in Public Being at ease by yourself—reading in a café, going out for a stroll by yourself—some will find strange. But it says a lot about your self-sufficiency and self-assurance. Others tend to be impressed by those who are happy in their own company; it implies power, serenity, and independence.
Final Thought These habits may not catch attention right away, but they leave a lasting impression. They're gentle, genuine, and effective in ways that superficial charm can't imitate. In an era of noise, these "weird" qualities are quietly attractive.

Did You Know? Mount Everest isn't the highest Mountain.
Tumblr media
Speaking of mountains, there's a reason Mount Everest isn't technically the highest. Mauna Kea in Hawaii might seem short from sea level, but it extends far down below the ocean floor. So, if you measure from its base to its peak, Mauna Kea takes the crown! (Source)

The Origin of “There’s More Than One Way to Skin a Cat”
Tumblr media
Have you ever wondered about the expression “there’s more than one way to skin a cat”?  It’s a rather shocking piece of folk wisdom. Saying it may elicit groans from those around you, but in spite of that (or perhaps because of it), the expression endures.  Personally, I always assumed the saying must have some kind of sound explanation, because how else would it have gotten started?  All it essentially means is that “there’s more than one way to do something,” so why don’t people just say that?  Why bring dead cats (at least, I’m hoping they’re dead) into the matter at all?  I decided to investigate, and found that the expression’s origins only become more twisted.  Apparently, people used to use all kinds of macabre analogies involving friendly animals to express the same thing, such as “there are more ways to kill a dog than hanging,” and “there are more ways to kill a cat than choking it with cream.”  Boy—that certainly clears everything up!  But for those who wish to pursue the matter and trace the phrase’s beginnings even further, I present to you the unlikely story…
During the Middle Ages, torture was a common punishment, as kingdoms throughout Europe believed it necessary to use sadistic methods to ensure that society didn’t descend into barbarism.  The idea was that acts such as hanging citizens by their ankles and whipping them would send the message that sick-minded behavior wasn’t tolerated.  At the height of the torture craze, a Guild of Torturers, with thousands of members across many nations, was established, and it even held a considerable amount of political power.  Over time, the members developed their own, distinct culture, as their jobs in dungeons usually prevented them from being able to interact with other segments of society, and the torture lifestyle tended to predispose them to only being able to relate to other torturers.  For example, a popular joke about plucking the hairs out of a person’s head one-by-one was likely to be lost on a general audience, so not many torturers made the career leap from the dungeon to the royal court as a jester, although many tried.  “Torchies,” as torturers came to refer to themselves, developed a rich history of traditions, many of which have survived into the present.  Know anyone with a nipple piercing?  That person may have a Torchie ancestor.  Ever received a “purple nurple”?  That was once a friendly greeting from one Torchie to another—maybe you should have told your bully, “Nice to meet you, too!”  Common traditional styles of Torchie dress, as well as hairstyles, have also been adopted into today’s goth and metalhead subcultures.
Unfortunately for the Torchies of yesterday, the fat times of the Middle Ages came to a crashing end, and the entire torturing profession came to be stigmatized and even outlawed altogether.  Many Torchies lost their cushy dungeon homes and were forced into the daylight of the streets.  Their unique skillsets, which owed to hundreds of years of proud torturing practices, didn’t translate well into other lines of work, and many of their most horrific torturing innovations, sadly, were lost forever with the passage of time.  Torchies were increasingly forced to integrate into the rest of society, where many close-minded individuals were intolerant of their ways.  Some would call them by slurs such as “pain pervs” and “suffer nuts.”  Some even reacted to Torchies’ friendly nurple greetings by screaming.
The Torchies were a persistent people, however, and today, we owe them for many things that we take for granted.  It’s thanks to their years of passionate political rallying and organized demonstrations that wool sweaters still exist, and many showers are able to reach scalding temperatures.  Many of the expressions you probably use can be traced back to Torchie culture as well. “Balls to the wall,” for instance, used to denote a practice wherein a man would be sent at blistering speed toward a wall at crotch level.  “Hot as shit,” as in “it’s hot as shit outside today,” comes from a torture in which a prisoner would be locked inside of a very hot room that reeked of excrement. In fact, many of our “shit”-related expressions are derived from similar stench-based tortures.  Can you guess what “off the hook” used to mean?  Here’s a hint:  Torturers didn’t have waiting rooms.
Returning to the main subject of this post, many Torchies possessed a soft side and owned cats, which they would sometimes integrate into their torturing methods as their little torturing buddies.  Ever heard someone say, “Cat got your tongue?”  That comes from a traditional interrogation technique that involved letting a cat claw at a person’s face until he or she revealed desired information. Sometimes the cat would literally grab the person’s tongue and prevent speech, so the torturers would ask “cat got your tongue?” in a sincere manner.  “Letting the cat out of the bag” referred to occasions when an amateur torturer accidentally allowed the cat to escape its carrying sack on the way to administering the scratching torture, which would, of course, ruin the surprise of which torture was about to be used.
Torchies did not actually skin their beloved cats.  Even they wouldn’t dream of doing such a thing. However, they did skin other dead animals before cooking them, and sometimes would use the carcasses to practice torture methods before a tasty meal.  When told that there is “more than one way to skin an animal,” Torchies’ minds would instantly be flooded with different ways that skinning could be achieved, from “casual style,” which involved grabbing an animal’s skin and opening it like a bag of chips, to getting out a potato peeler and doing things the tidier way.

I went to the pet store to purchase two ghost shrimp for my fish tank. They come in a clear bag, which I wrapped in a fleece jacket to try to keep them from getting stressed by the outside world during my very short walk home. A lady stopped me on the street and said, “Aww, new mom, you look tired. Is the baby sleeping? Then she stood on her tippy toes to try to see the baby. I shamefully unwrapped the top of the bag to show that there was no baby in there and said, “I have no excuse for looking tired; these are just ghost shrimp.” She got this really weird look on her face and said, “Oh. Sorry your shrimps died,” as she walked away.
It just occurred to me that was unable to see the shrimp (they’re tiny and clear). I love the idea that she’s home right now, telling her friends that she saw some crazy lady carrying around a bag of water disguised as a baby in order to transport the souls of deceased crustaceans. This is my legacy.
