Het boek biedt een gedetailleerd beeld van het dagelijks leven in Sobibor, de systematische vernietiging van de Joden en de moedige opstand van de gevangenen in oktober 1943, die leidde tot de ontsnapping van ongeveer 300 gevangenen. Daarnaast bevat het boek historische context en achtergrondinformatie over de oprichting en werking van Sobibor, evenals de nasleep van de oorlog voor de overlevenden. Een gruwelijk relaas van diverse overlevenden van vernietigingskamp Sobibor. De gruwelen waar zij mee te maken hebben en gehad, en die in dit boek niet worden geschuwd, tarten het voorstellingsvermogen. De gedetaillleerde omschrijving van Kamp III (de gaskamers en het lazaret) en hoe daar met gevangenen werd omgegaan schetsen een beeld van een hel die niet te bevatten is. In de serie van interviews komt naar voren dat Sobibor, meer nog dan andere kampen, puur gericht was op vernietiging. Het sadisme, de ontberingen en de voortdurende martelingen waar de gevangenen mee te maken hadden is heden ten dage niet voor te stellen. Alleen daarom al zou dit boek bij iedereen op de plank moeten staan en gelezen moeten worden; als blik in het verleden en waarschuwing voor een mogelijke toekomst.

Normally, you would expect books of short fiction and not-poems to be connected by similar themes boring you a hundred different ways through reams of prose and not-poetry with the same message strangling every word and image with endless variations on the same theme.

Not this book.

This book will scatter your mind over a jagged bed of theme avoidance like ice and fire.

And you’ll never be that same.

Review: I have read Ambrosio’s first novel, A Reservoir Man, which was a great coming-of-age story. Now we follow the same lead as a retired professor who meets Ron and both go on a trip. The author delivers a nice, wonderful story of two people building a friendship and developing a bond that is powerful. I loved reading about their journey as there were some conflicts that came into play but the settings were just beautiful. The pacing was fast and I finished it fairly quickly. I recommend checking this book out because it gives a great learning experience about developing friendships and growing oneself.

Dia membawa serta kru berisikan Inej si Siluman, Jesper dengan keahlian menembak yang tiada lawan, Nina dan kesaktiannya sebagai Grisha, Wylan si Tuan Muda yang melipir dari rumah, dan Matthias yang semata-mata ikut untuk meraih kembali kebebasannya. Berlandaskan kepercayaan yang tak seberapa, keenamnya bersama-sama melakukan misi dengan taruhan kemewahan atau ajal.

Pernahkah kamu membaca buku yang membuatmu merasa seperti tidak sedang membaca buku? Mungkin bagiku buku ini salah satunya. Buku ini terlampau seru sehingga 614 halamannya sekonyong-konyong habis tak terasa. Dari segi plot, wah, tidak ada yang perlu dikomentari. Menyoroti cerita sekelompok pencuri, tentu buku ini dipenuhi dengan adegan aksi yang dinarasikan secara luwes. Untuk kamu yang belum terbiasa, mungkin adegan di dalamnya akan merasa too much sebab tindak-tanduk kekerasan dijabarkan secara detail dan berdarah-darah, terkadang membuat kita merasa ngilu sendiri. Terlepas dari adegan laga yang mendominasi, cerita ini juga dilengkapi romansa tipis-tipis sebagai pemanis. 

Karakter yang ada di buku ini pun beragam serta diukir dengan sangat apik. Ada Matthias yang digambarkan sebagai prajurit gagah berambut pirang juga karakter Inej si gadis Suli berkulit perunggu. Di setiap babnya, buku ini disajikan melalui sudut pandang orang ketiga dari tokoh-tokohnya. Dengan ini, hal-hal ganjil seperti kenapa Kaz selalu bersarung tangan dan alasan Matthias membenci Nina sedemikian rupa terjawab sejalan dengan kita membaca tiap lembarnya. Perasaan yang dipendam oleh masing-masing tokoh juga turut dinarasikan sehingga memicu timbulnya simpati dan membuat pembaca merasa terikat. Selain itu, buku ini juga diselingi humor—atau mungkin seharusnya sarkas—yang ampuh dalam mengurangi sedikit nuansa tegang. Kalau urusan melucu, Jesper jagonya (padahal sejatinya semua anggota kru sama bobroknya). Dalam keadaan seserius atau seberbahaya apapun, selalu saja ada celetukan-celetukan yang menggelitik perut.

Dikarenakan linimasa buku ini terjadi setelah kisah seri Shadow and Bone, untuk pembaca yang suka memerhatikan detail cerita seperti aku, kusarankan untuk membaca trilogi Shadow and Bone dahulu sebelum membaca buku atau duologi Six of Crows ini. Ada beberapa bagian yang mengacu kepada seri tersebut sehingga mungkin akan membuat bingung pembaca baru.
