Set app limits for a specific amount of time (I do 30 mins each for Reddit, IG and tumblr) and have your friends/ family select the passcode. They shouldn’t reveal it to you under any circumstances. Don’t set app limits for important apps like WhatsApp/ messages, set it for social media where you tend to doomscroll.

find other apps to binge on. The reality is, you’re going need to ease off slowly. So download an app that is educational - so even if your screen time is high, at least you’re being a little productive. This can be apps like Elevate or whatever works for you.

Yesterday (20/12/23), two fifteen-year-olds, referred to only as Girl X and Boy Y in court, were found guilty of the murder of 16 year old trans girl, Brianna Ghey. Mrs Justice Yip on the trial has now stated the two can be identified when they are sentenced next year.

On Saturday, 15th of February 2023, Brianna Ghey was found stabbed 28 times in a park in Warrington. She was pronounced dead by paramedics roughly one hour after she was found, and her killers were arrested within 24 hours of the murder. Early into the investigation, investigators said there was little evidence linking Brianna's identity as a trans woman to her murder, stating they had "no information or intelligence to suggest" it was a hate crime. At this point in the investigation, police had restored deleted WhatsApp messages between the two convicted, revealing that they had spoken about killing five people, one of whom was Brianna Ghey. Detective Chief Superintendent Mike Evans of Chesire Police said "“I think if it hadn’t been Brianna, it would have been one of the other four children on that list."

Brianna was first mentioned by Girl X about two months before her death, and, according to police, seemed to be "obsessed" with her. Boy Y responded with some "horrific, dehumanising, and transphobic" language, using transphobic slurs to refer Brianna, and almost exclusively calling her 'it'. In one of his messages to Girl X, he wrote, "I want to see if it will scream like a man or a girl”.

Chesire Police said that Girl X had attempted to kill Brianna before, and had told Boy Y that she had given Brianna ibuprofen tablets earlier that year. Brianna's mother, Esther Ghey, said that Brianna had had to stay home from school at the time due to being extremely unwell, though she did recover. The messages also reportedly showed that Girl X asked Boy Y for other methods to kill Brianna when the tablets did not work. Girl X's defence during the recent 18-day trial said this was part of a fantasy the two teenagers had shared.

Both suspects pled not guilty to the murder, however after a jury deliberation of over four hours, Brianna's killers were found guilty of murder.

On Thursday, 21st of December, the judge on the trial said that the defendants can be named when they are sentenced in February next year, an exception made due to "strong public interest".

I've had very little sleep and my writing suffers as a result, but also, this aint fanfic and I don't give a shit.

okay so today i was cold all day while picking those olives, which means I was cranky by the time I went home, and when i got here, I refused to go to bed having done nothing but pick olives all day. I decided to ask mum for her phone to take a look at facebook's marketplace, because I'm keeping an eye on the prices of some stuff I'd like to get eventually. A PSVita at only $40 caught my eye because I know that's not what they cost, unless they're basically trash, but this one insisted it was working.

so I checked what i was dealing with (account from 2023, cat picture, photo of a ship? everything set to private. also selling a wii-u, and 3DS, and a chainsaw. noted.) and sent the guy a message. Immediately told me to come pick it up. ngl, the enthusiasm and 'come right away friendly human' attitude came across as excessive.

He was from rather afar so I suggested using MercadoLibre as an intermediary, and I said would pay for the extra costs he would incur in by listing the vita there. Guy said no because he needed the money now. Noted.

Usually that's where I stop, but I'm pissed off at the world at this point so I didn't.

I asked him how he would be willing to do this then. I explained that I didn't want to risk losing my money as much as he wouldn't want to risk losing his product. Fair enough, he said. Offered to send me the thing if I gave him half the money upfront, and the other half once I got it. Extremely noted, because I was given the impression that he needed the money right away, and also if I was selling something, I wouldn't wanna risk being scammed out of half the value I'm asking for. Suddenly he didn't need the money so soon, if that was the case.

Next, I asked for his phone number cause marketplace is a pain in the ass and i had to get off my mum's phone. He took an awfully long time to reply, but he did. Whatsapp is commonly used here so that's what we used. He had no profile picture, no statuses, no anything. I suspect he took so long because he went to buy a new sim card, but I cannot confirm this, obviously.

Then I asked him if he could meet with a friend of mine of Tuesday. He says Tuesday is too late. Fair. What about meeting with my friend's wife on Monday. He asked if it couldn't be right now (impossible, anyone would need to rush like a mfer) or tomorrow. I agreed after making him wait a little.

At this point I asked him for his location so that I could send my friend's lovely wife to pick up the Vita. Mind you, the payment method he wanted for this was bank transfer, in the end, and I don't know howthis works elsewhere, but banks here don't reimburse you if you get scammed by a fault of your own.

He sends me some place that's basically in the middle of nowhere, and not the actual live location either, but an address on google maps, which is a choice if you're trying to seem trustworthy. I tell him that it would be really hard to arrive based on that so he adds an address. it corresponds to a house, yes, but it's kind of, like, not super close to the earlier location. why wouldn't you pin the actual address in the first place, right? Why instead send me a location two streets away.

I ask if it's possible to get a picture of the house because the wife is worried about getting lost at this hour and it would make it easy for her to find the place that way. Bro took forever to reply, and sent a picture of the sign at the intersection near the house. Like, bro, just say no...

So of course I kept pushing and dangling money over his face. The farce went on in a total stalemate where he just repeated stuff he has already said while not outwardly refusing to send a picture of the house, then suddenly he starts going on about how it's probably too far away for her, and that he's still gonna try to sell the console today after all, because he's not sure what time me and my friend's wife (who I made up in case it wasn't clear) are even gonna meet next day, but that he's going to make an attempt to meet in central Santiago IF he doesn't sell it.

so i insisted (bro please no, i need the console) that he sent me a picture of the house and we'd find a way to get her there today 'cause c'mon bro, it's a vita for $40, i just need the photo, please bro, let me get that thing off your hands. I'll send her with cash, don't fail me. The more his voice messages went on for the more panic i heard. It was great.

The Connectedness that Killed Communication

For many years now, I've felt like some sort of background anxiousness, always alert to when the next text message will come. As if I was made for the single purpose of answering that next message that will most assuredly come. As if me not paying attention would dissapoint the other person taking part in a conversation.

And then, as of yesterday, I was tagged in an IG story which basically wanted to recover the nostalgia of MSN and similar methods of communication in the early '00-'10s. And I was immediately struck by a thought.

I exchange messages the whole day, but I barely have any conversation. And I am rarely able to chose the time when I'm open to communications.

Let's frame it this way: back in the days of MSN, getting online was a choice. I didn't want to talk? I wouldn't open MSN and that was it. Then some time later, days or so, maybe someone would ask why I didn't connect. In the same manner as, if you always go to the same place to hang out, someone would ask if some day you didn't go.

The internet was that, a place to hang out. I believe the term today is "third space".

But with the advent of smartphones and constant internet, that formerly third space turned into a non-space that permeates everything. Conversations started and ended abruptly, and soon stopped being conversations except when you were really paying attention. Now thought is barely present in the act of messaging. Some people are amazed by AI capacities, when is actually us that get slowly devoid of content.

Now we do not choose when to engage. Of course, we can ignore messages, but that's not the same as not receiving them. And since we already think we speak with a lot of people, our third space has been replaced by exchanging memes, which essentially conveys compact information. And so, we end up yearning for any kind real conversation.

I think that's the actual reason behind anxiety in my case, the need for a third space that doesn't exist anymore. The need to have conversations in a way that doesn't happen anymore, and that it's not whatsapp's fault alone: the constant connectedness makes us feel like our lives are busy, and we have little time to spare. Getting to have a few conversations for like, an hour? too much to ask, no one has that kind of time anymore.

Note however, that this is not a problem for everyone: extroverts usually retort to their usual methods, i.e. talking to random people everywhere, in person. I think this is an issue for us social introverts, who want to talk, but not with everyone, not in a large group of people. We want to talk to the five to ten people we find interesting, and we lost the place in which we used to hang out.

Week 7: Social Media and Public Health: A Platform for Dialogue or One-Way Messaging?

Social media has revolutionized the way public health campaigns communicate with the public. Social media refers to online social networking sites and is a broad example of Web 2.0, such as Twitter, YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, Instagram, WhatsApp, and blogs. It is a new and ever-changing field. Access to the internet, social media platforms and mobile communications are all tools that can be leveraged to make health information available and accessible. (Kanchan & Gaidhane, 2023). But are these campaigns truly leveraging the interactive potential of these platforms, or are they simply using them as digital megaphones?

The One-Way Messaging Approach

Many public health campaigns still rely on traditional, one-way communication styles. These campaigns are typically centered around disseminating important messages, such as promoting COVID-19 vaccinations or raising awareness about mental health. For example:

The CDC’s Instagram posts during the pandemic often delivered visually appealing infographics and key health tips but rarely engaged directly with audience comments.

Similarly, campaigns like #EatHealthy often feature polished content that informs but doesn’t always invite interaction.

This approach ensures consistent messaging and allows organizations to maintain control over the narrative. However, it risks missing the mark in fostering trust or addressing specific concerns of the target audience, particularly in diverse or skeptical communities.

The Interactive Potential of Social Media

Conversely, campaigns that embrace social media as a platform for dialogue often see greater engagement and impact. Interactive features like polls, live Q&A sessions, and user-generated content can transform a campaign into a two-way conversation. Examples include:

The #ThisIsOurShot campaign, where doctors and nurses answered vaccine-related questions through live streams and short TikTok videos. This approach directly addressed misinformation and empowered users to engage with trusted professionals.

Mental health awareness campaigns like #BellLetsTalk use platforms like Twitter to encourage people to share their stories, creating a sense of community while driving the campaign's message.

These methods invite users to participate, ask questions, and share their perspectives, making them feel heard and valued.

Challenges to Fostering Dialogue

Despite the potential for interaction, creating two-way communication isn’t without its challenges. For one, public health organizations may struggle with the volume of responses and questions, especially during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the onset of COVID-19, incidents of racism and xenophobia have been occurring globally, especially toward people of East Asian appearance and descent. In response, this article investigates how an online Asian community has utilized social media to engage in cathartic expressions, mutual care, and discursive activism amid the rise of anti-Asian racism and xenophobia during COVID-19 (Abidin & Zeng, 2020). In the era of COVID-19, SAT has developed into a congregational Facebook hub for the Asian diaspora. SAT's 1000+ daily posts from its members have quickly shifted to reflecting on what it means to be "Asian" during the pandemic, from promoting "quarantine trends" (such as homemade dalgona coffees that require the effort of whipped coffee and milk but are Instagram worthy to simulate the café experience; and recommendations of Korean dramas in every genre to soothe the soul) to making fun of Asian mothers' pseudo-scientific anti-COVID remedies.

Additionally, misinformation and trolling can disrupt meaningful conversations.

To mitigate these issues, organizations can use strategies such as:

Employing community managers to monitor and respond to comments.

Partnering with influencers who align with the campaign's goals and can engage directly with their followers.

Providing clear guidelines for respectful dialogue to maintain a positive online environment.

The Sweet Spot: Balancing Information and Engagement

The most effective public health campaigns strike a balance between delivering essential information and fostering meaningful interaction. For example, the World Health Organization (WHO) frequently uses Instagram Stories to post health tips while also utilizing the "Ask Me Anything" feature to respond to followers' queries in real time. This dual approach ensures that their messages are both informative and engaging.

In conclusion, while many public health campaigns on social media remain rooted in one-way communication, the potential for meaningful dialogue is immense. By leveraging the interactive features of these platforms and actively engaging with their audience, public health organizations can not only amplify their messages but also build trust, address concerns, and foster lasting behavioural change.

A seaside hotel and former bank offices on the Isle of Man have been used by scammers conning victims in China out of millions of dollars, a BBC World Service investigation has found.

The dining room and lounge at the Seaview Hotel in Douglas were packed with dozens of Chinese workers, we have been told, on computers hooked up to fast broadband. A specialist wok hob had also been delivered to the hotel’s kitchen.

The deception, which happened between January 2022 and January 2023 according to Chinese court documents, used a method known as "pig-butchering". It is so-called because the process of “fattening the pig” - gaining the victim’s trust - is vital to its success.

The BBC spent nearly a year establishing how the investment scam was carried out from the island, which is a British Crown dependency with an independent government.

We also uncovered other details, such as how bosses had big ambitions to build a state-of-the-art office complex overlooking the Irish Sea.

As well as obtaining court papers, we have accessed leaked documents and spoken to company insiders.

One former member of staff, Jordan [not his real name], told us he had no idea of the murky world he was entering when he arrived on the Isle of Man. He says he was relieved to have found what he thought was a stable administrative job.

He did notice, however, that his new employer seemed quite secretive - for example, he and his colleagues were forbidden from taking photos at company social events. What he says he didn’t realise was that many of his Chinese colleagues were actually scam artists.

In late 2021, nearly 100 people had been transferred to the Isle of Man to work for a company which Chinese court documents refer to as "MIC". They had come from the Philippines where they had worked for another scamming firm. The BBC has discovered that MIC stands for Manx Internet Commerce.

On the Isle of Man, MIC was part of a group of associated companies - all with the same owner.

An online casino, run by King Gaming Ltd, was the most prominent. In mainland China, gambling is illegal. Setting up halfway around the world meant the group's founders could target Chinese customers, but also take advantage of the Isle of Man’s low gambling taxes.

A few months after being based at the Seaview Hotel in Douglas, the MIC workers were moved to former bank offices on the east side of town.

And this is where Jordan says he would hear sporadic cheering from his new colleagues - who worked in groups of four. He now believes they were celebrating moments when they had successfully scammed another victim, some 5,000 miles away.

Six people who worked for MIC in Douglas have now been convicted - upon their return home to China - of carrying out investment scams against Chinese citizens.

The cases, heard in late 2023, detail the illicit money stream. Victims were lured by the defendants and their accomplices from bases on the Isle of Man and in the Philippines, according to the Chinese court papers.

They say the defendants would work in teams to pull Chinese investors into chat groups on QQ - a popular Chinese instant messaging service similar to WhatsApp. One scammer would play the role of an investment "teacher", and others would pretend to be fellow investors.

The BBC has seen evidence - including in the court papers - that many of those who arrived in Douglas from the Philippines were engaged in the scams. All used the same computer equipment, depended on QQ for their work and, with the exception of a few managers, all held the same job title.

The fake investors would build an atmosphere of hype and excitement around the money-making skills of the "teacher", who would then tell the victim to put money into a particular investment platform, the Chinese court found.

Dazzled by the hype, the victim would comply, only for their funds to be syphoned off by the scammers, who actually controlled these platforms and could manipulate them from behind the scenes.

The Chinese court said it was difficult to verify the victims' total losses - but it said 38.87m renminbi (£4.17m/$5.3m) had been taken from at least 12 victims.

Relying on evidence including the defendants’ own confessions, as well as travel and financial records and chat logs, the court found the six defendants guilty.

This was not only a profitable but also a sophisticated scam, say the court documents, requiring front line teams to deploy the "pig-butchering" techniques with persuasiveness and skill.

The BBC has discovered the identity of the companies' sole beneficiary. His name was hidden behind layers of administrative paperwork.

MIC and its affiliate companies were all held by a trust set up by an individual named "Bill Morgan" who, documents show, was also known as Liang Lingfei. Employees called him "Boss Liang", says Jordan.

The Chinese court papers refer to a man called Liang Lingfei being the co-founder of MIC on the Isle of Man - which it described as "a fairly stable criminal organisation established in order to carry out scam activities". Mr Liang was not one of those prosecuted or represented at the hearings.

The court stated that Mr Liang was also co-founder of the scamming organisation in the Philippines. The BBC has seen evidence that many MIC employees worked there before being transferred to the Isle of Man.

Our investigation has also found that Mr Liang obtained an Isle of Man investment visa and attended multiple company events on the island. His wife also owns a home in the town of Ballasalla, near the island’s airport.

The group of companies on the Isle of Man was ambitious, having signed a planning agreement late last year for a glitzy "parkland campus" headquarters on the site of a former naval training base. A spokesperson for the developers described it as the "largest single private investment in the Isle of Man".

Architects’ images show office buildings set on a hill above the seafront in Douglas. Inside would have been penthouse apartments, a spa, multiple bars and a karaoke lounge.

The campus was to be used by MIC staff and those working for MIC's "affiliate" companies, including those involved in online gambling, planning documents state.

Conservative estimates put the global annual revenues of the "pig-butchering" industry at more than $60bn (£46.5bn).

"This is the first such case we've seen of one of these [pig-butchering] scam operations setting up in a Western country," says Masood Karimipour, South East Asia representative at the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.

Trying to stop the scams is like a "game of whack-a-mole", he says, and it is a battle that "organised crime is currently winning" as criminals engage in what he calls "jurisdiction shopping" where they perceive there to be legal loopholes and little oversight.

Any ambitions the group of companies may have had on the Isle of Man - legitimate or otherwise - appear to have come to an end.

In April, police raided the former bank offices. They also targeted an address next to the island's Courts of Justice building - using a ladder to enter through a first-floor window in the early hours of the morning.

In a statement released shortly afterwards, police said the raids had been in connection with a wider fraud and money laundering investigation in relation to King Gaming Ltd IOM. Seven people had been arrested and released on bail, they added.

Since then, a further three people are known to have been arrested.

Receivers were appointed earlier this month for companies in the group - including MIC and King Gaming Ltd IOM - at the request of the Isle of Man's attorney general.

The island's gambling regulator has stripped MIC's gambling affiliate companies of their licences.

The parkland campus site was cleared of trees and signage went up - but the redevelopment is now on hold indefinitely.

The BBC has made repeated attempts, via several methods of communication, to contact the companies involved - as well as Bill Morgan/Liang Langfei and company directors - but has received no replies.

We have also attempted to contact the Seaview Hotel, but have received no response, though there is no suggestion that anyone there was aware of any illegal activities taking place on the premises.
