in literally 28 minutes I am presenting my site and I am so nervous my dudes MY DUDES ( I just wanna pass man )

“10 letters, a pejorative term describing a foolish person.”

As she says it, the Solver raises her gaze from the crossword. She glances over at the man standing behind the bar who, making use of a brief moment of peace, is idly wiping off a glass.

“Hmm.” The Barman furrows his brows. “10 letters?”

The Solver nods.

At this hour, the establishment is full. Almost every table is taken; so are the tall stools surrounding the bar. In the background, a constant hum - conversations, laughter, arguments, singing. The room is dark and stuffy; the only light sources are narrow windows and a couple of strategically placed lamps, such as the one hanging above the countertop. It blinks every once in a while, as if about to burn out.

“Dumbass?” The Barman puts the glass down and starts counting on his fingers. “D… u… m… b… no, that doesn’t fit…”

“And it should start with n.”

“With n? No idea. There’s so many people in here, do I really have to be the one you’re quizzing on this? Again?

The Solver shrugs. She taps her pencil against the counter, still frowning at the empty boxes of the unfinished crossword.

“Do the next one, maybe that’ll he- oh! Look who’s finally decided to show up!”

A tall man with black hair steps through the bar’s threshold - the Courier. He’s holding a cardboard box in his arms. His gaze carefully scans the perimeter of the room until it finally lands on the pair sitting at the bar. The Barman waves him over.

“A 10 letter word that describes someone foolish!” he calls out to him over the hum of conversation.

“Nincompoop!” From some faraway corner of the room, another voice responds. The Courier doesn’t even get the chance to comprehend the question.

“N… i… n…” The Solver mutters to herself as she fills out the boxes with the letters. “Yeah, that fits. That’s really it? What kind of word is that?”

While the Solver reaches for her phone to look for the definition of the newly learnt word, the Courier approaches the bar. Gently, he places the box on the counter, right next to the crossword.

“Y’all don’t even get me started on how frustrating it’s been to get here today,” he sighs, leaning over the counter to allow the Barman to press a kiss to his cheek.

“That bad?”

“Understatement. The road’s so icy I thought I’d slide right off it. Hell, that two minute walk from the parking lot? I nearly fell over, was worried all of the goods would’ve shattered.” He shakes his head, one hand coming to rest on the edge of the box. “Even the entrance gate’s all frozen over… again with the crosswords?”

The Solver nods, not lifting her gaze from the paper. Her phone is now safely tucked away in one of her pockets.

“9 letters, something extraordinarily and dauntingly large. I have the first two letters, m and o.”

“Like massive?” asks the Barman.

“Yeah, but starts with mo.”

“Mo… moo… moo…”

The Courier snorts a laugh. He sits on one of the empty stools, right next to her.

“What are you, a cow?” He’s still laughing as he glances over her shoulder at the half-solved crossword.

“Moo… mongous… humongous!” The Barman continues stubbornly. “No. Mo… mo…”

“Monstrous!” the Solver suddenly exclaims.

“Yes!”

The Courier only shakes his head. He tries not to show it, but there’s a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips.

“You got that watermelon one for me?” he asks, turning towards the Barman.

“Sure I do. Just give me a sec, I’ll check those goods of yours…”

The goods. That cardboard box, sitting on the countertop. The Barman opens it carefully and looks inside. He reaches in with one hand and pulls out a vial filled with a bright, orange liquid.

“Well, damn,” he whistles, raising the vial higher. Flickering lights penetrate the liquid, causing orange highlights to bounce off his face. “Authentic?”

“What else would it be?” the Courier grumbles. “Wouldn’t bring you anything less. My drink?”

The Barman rolls his eyes. He puts the vial back in the box, then stashes it away behind the bar.

“What’s gotten you so exasperated today?”

“I’m not exasperated, more like ex… exhausted.” The Courier turns towards the Solver. “So how much have you got left of that crossword?”

“Last one. 6 letters, a coin of a specific value…”

Any further consideration is interrupted by the Barman who lowers a glass of light-pink liquid onto the counter.

“Your drink, my dear exhausted chap,” he says with a smile.

The Courier takes a coin purse out of his pocket. He turns it upside down, spilling its contents onto the counter - coins, as well as a couple of loose papers and some paper clips. He picks through the chaos, passing some of the coins over to the Barman.

“Fucking- how much more do I need? Five cents?”

“A nickel!”

The Solver quickly scribbles something onto the paper, then slams the crossword down onto the counter. With a wide smile, she looks over at the accompanying men.

“Done!” she exclaims happily. “Well then, a discount?”

“What am I supposed to do, give you a discount for every crossword?”

“I’d say it’s more for those guys from earlier, but if you want to make it for the crossword, then sure.”

“I’m going to go bankrupt because of you all…”

“Don’t say it wasn’t worth it. And now, another drink!”
