How It is Created: Peridot is the gemstone variety of olivine, a mineral made up of magnesium, iron and silicate compound. Sometimes I often think about Nagi Usui and how she’s one of the best characters to have come out in the past few years.

-One of her main motivations to get back into the real world is so she can play more of her mobile gacha game.

-She gains an instant crush on someone just because he resembles one of the main characters from said mobile gacha game.

-She’s the only one of her team to actually like the Grilled Alligator meal from SBY BBQ.

-The kanji on her shirt changes for every situation she finds herself in whether it’s for fights or eating.

more royal dragons, this time the ones from arc 2/3! these were really fun, and the previous designs helped me get comfortable with more detailed jewelry designs, so these are a bit more extravagant.

RUBY: i didn't realize how young she really is when i read escaping peril the first time, i thought she was in her mid-twenties at least but apparently she's only 12/17? wild. anyways i made her ruby red with some orange accents to point to tourmaline. her tiara is meant to look like laurels, studded with rubies, and the gems on her brows and wings are citrine.

GLORY: i already had a design for her, i just touched it up a bit here. she's very pretty, but her scales are notably duller than my other rainwing designs. she has pouches she wears around her neck because she likes to be prepared and is trying to connect more to her culture. at least one of those pockets has snacks for silver. the flower on her ear is a plumeria india, one of my favorite flowers.

THORN: easily my favorite design in the set, oh my god i love how she came out. she has the same colors as my sunny design but desaturated, and almost the same markings. her jewelry is mostly gold with onyx and lapis lazuli insets. the design for the eye of onyx is inspired by @dragonsndoodles's design, which looks absolutely gorgeous and way more elegant than the graphic novel version.

SNOWFALL: i think i made her too round and soft-looking? idk i think she's cute though. i definitely had to get those pale sunset colors in there, and she has similar colors/markings to glacier. the tiara is one she found in the treasury after the racism crown™ was destroyed, and the shawl was a gift from luna as a thanks for helping her tribe. silk doesn't help much against the cold, but it sure is pretty.

WASP: SCARY BITCH. i had to mess with her colors a lot, i wanted to make her kinda greenish with red accents but it just was NOT working. i do like where i ended up though. i don't know that she would wear much jewelry, probably more armor than anything else, but i wanted to do hivewing jewelry so here we are. the neck piece was really fun to design. these are steel and gold with amber and peridot accents, and the cape is silk with gold embroidery. i have this headcanon of her having breath of evil growing out of her like a cordyceps fungus, and she uses the cape to cover the tendrils on her back.

SEQUOIA: ooo she was a challenge, i'm not great at designs with a lot of green or a lot of dark colors so she was fun. her colors are inspired by @daily-wof-designs, and the brown tones were pulled from pictures of giant sequoias. she wears braided leather straps hung with aquamarine, and the scarf might be silk? or some kind of natural fiber? i'm not sure. but it has leaf designs and is probably batik dyed (which is super cool btw look it up)

Saturday, Part One

Late Morning

Vyn did not awaken earlier than his usual 9AM, and for good reason. He would need to be well-rested for today’s visit. Lack of sleep led to lack of control through stress and exhaustion. He would present his immaculate self to Rosa as always.

He’d gathered the buckets, plant food, shears and other tools the night before and set them out on the back porch for easy access. The sky was a bright blue punctuated by cloud but was still in the grip of winter.

Just before stepping into his garage, Vyn gave her a call.

“Good morning, Dr. Richter!” she greeted him, voice sunny and pleasant. “I hope you slept well. I’m almost ready… I’m just trying to find a decent sweater.”

“I did, thank you, Rosa,” he replied, smiling inwardly. “If you do not have something you are willing to have snagged, we can stop by a clothing store on the way.”

She seemed shocked by the offer and quickly apologized. “Oh no, that’s too much trouble! Don’t worry, I found an old hoodie from college in the back of my closet. That ought to do, right?”

“Yes, that will be adequate, so long as it sufficiently protects you from the cold.”

“I should be fine! Besides, we’ll be moving around a lot, so it won’t be that cold.”

“Very well,” he murmured, his reply buttery smooth through the phone. Unbeknownst to Vyn, his velvety voice made her shiver. “I shall see you soon.”

Rosa was packed and ready as soon as Vyn had arrived, opening the door and allowing him inside briefly. Her full grey hoodie was well-loved, fraying on the cuffs and was missing the drawstrings. Her peridot eyes were weary though she seemed no less worse for the wear.

She had a white plastic bucket on the kitchen counter and next to it was a small gift box wrapped in perfectly crisp emerald green paper. Next to the gift box was a book. Vyn stride into the kitchen and noted the book’s title as, “The Care and Maintenance of English Gardens”.

Vyn’s smile and softening golden eyes sent Rosa’s heart fluttering. She coughed and attempted to explain.

“I ordered the supplies after you agreed to let me help,” she said, turning away from him to conceal her blush. “And… and I didn’t want to inadvertently damage anything, so I’ve been trying to read as much as I can.”

“Rosa, your consideration is much appreciated. However, I have a concern.”

Whirling around, eyes wide in surprise, she asked, “Is there a problem, Dr. Richter?”

“Were you unable to rest, Rosa?”

Taking a moment to move to the couch, Vyn sat and raised his hand to her in silent beckoning. Without a thought, Rosa snatched up the gift box, followed and sat beside him. Her jeans were old and worn at the knees. She chewed her lip like a child reprimanded for theft of sweets.

“…I, well,” came her stammered response. “I just… my brain was moving so quickly. Mental voraciousness, I think you called it. I stayed up late reading from the book. And… then I realized that aside from roses, I’m not sure what other plants you have in the garden.”

Vyn tapped on the gift with a long, tapered finger. “And this?”

Rosa’s blush darkened. “Well, you see… I wanted to thank you somehow. You’re allowing me to help in the garden. I saw this and I knew I should get it for you.” She handed him the box and said, “You don’t have to open it now. It can wait.”

Vyn bowed his head to her in gratitude, hoping the gesture would distract her enough to conceal his open smile. “Thank you, Rosa. Your kindness and generosity continue to amaze me.”

Her embarrassed babbling confirmed that his truck worked, for when Vyn raised his head, Rosa had turned away to hide her face in her sleeves. “When you say it that way, it’s so unfair…”

Chuckling, he tucked the gift under his arm and stood, offering her a hand. “We should take our leave, lest we while away the time we could be spending in the garden.”

“Oh, yes, right.” Rosa huffed and smoothed out her hoodie, taking his hand to stand. “Dr. Richter?”

“Hmm?”

Taking the bucket from the counter, Rosa grinned. “Want to see my nifty shears?”

Merc (Horrorswap Sans): A scraped chalcedony, neither cracked nor shattered, just...with a thin little slice of his gem shaved off. His smoothly polished cabochon is marred by one little rough and raw patch, and the result is a mostly stable form, but with occasional glitching-- very minor, really, if...inconvenient. Once Era 3 rolls around, he’s able to work with a talented Peridot technician to create an artificial, conscious-less quartz to take a slice from and apply to the damaged spot on his gem, like how humans grow scabs or stick adhesive patches onto wounds. Cherry quartz is chosen for the graft, a bright color that will stand out against his blue in case the experimental procedure goes wrong or makes things worse and needs to be un-grafted in a hurry. It turns out to be a success, though, and Chalcedony’s form fully stabilizes after that!

Ell (Horrorswap Papyrus): A cut zircon--and not in the manner that gems are usually cut. The whole bottom third of his gem is missing, sliced cleanly off. If it weren’t so clean a cut, he probably wouldn’t be able to form at all, but the severed piece of his gem must’ve contained either the resources or the programming for his legs and feet because the physical body he can make for himself halts right at his femurs. He...doesn’t love that, but it is what it is and he makes do with some hastily cobbled together limb enhancers. ...At least until Era 3, when broken gems can be repaired and a certain Chalcedony reveals he’s held onto Zircon’s severed piece all this time, in hopes it could be reattached someday. It’s not a perfect refitting, the little gem piece seems to have factory reset in the time it was separated--he can’t actually feel them, or alter them from that default ball-joint mannequin look that gems mid-forming have--but they respond and he can use them well enough.

Pitch (Horrorswapfell Sans): A crazy lace agate, mostly whole. His gem is missing just one tiny sliver, and because of it, the skull of his physical form is missing a little bit, too, right where his eye-sockets would’ve been. He’s just happy to be formed at all and doesn’t seem all that bothered by his lack of sight, though he doesn’t seem inclined to talk about how he lost his missing sliver...or the faint spiderweb of lines all over his bones... especially if he knows a certain gem is within earshot...

Nemo (Horrorswapfell Papyrus): A topaz! He’s fine! Really, his gem is completely whole and undamaged in any way, no problems at all. ......Unless you count the poofing. He seems to have a little trouble holding onto his form, dissipating often under stress, even without sustaining any physical damage. He takes an excessively long time to reform, too, whenever he retreats into his gem, but there’s no structural damage to his gem that could possibly explain it. Psychological damage of some kind...? Maybe, but it’s hard to say without confirmation, and he’s not very forthcoming on the subject.

Sunny (Gastertale Sans): A chrysoberyl, a technician type like peridots and cymophanes, totally without memories after a recent Rejuvenation. ...At least, that’s what he and a certain other gem were told before being put to work together in a lab, typical technician tasks and duties. Y’know, aside from the fact that they’re being Observed and it’s made clear that they’re not allowed to leave. After he does a little digging on the sly and finds out some very disturbing information, he talks his brother into making a break for it--and when that’s successful, they travel the universe freely as renegade gems, unaffiliated with anything and everything Homeworld. His gem is an upside-down tear drop on his forehead.

Aster (Gastertale Papyrus): Also a chrysoberyl, same as his brother. The same gem, the same placement, the same cut, even! It’s...a little odd. He doesn’t buy the Rejuvenation story from the start, and he spends a lot of time trying to subtly glean as many clues as he can about the real truth from all the gems around them, their ‘coworkers’ who seem to be watching the two of them very closely and taking notes and not letting them leave... It’s a delicate line to walk, probing for information without tipping anyone off that he is, in fact, onto...whatever’s going on here... so even after many, many cycles, he still doesn’t have much to go on. When the other Chrysoberyl suggests an escape attempt, citing that being locked up and watched is bad news no matter what the reason, he hesitates, not wanting to lose the opportunity to learn the truth...but ultimately, the logic is too sound to ignore. It’s only after they make their escape and start to freely traverse the universe that it occurs to him that... maybe his brother knows a little more than he’s letting on... His gem is a right-side-up tear drop on his forehead.

Spencer was beyond pissed. His alarm didn’t go off in the morning, making him rush to get ready in the morning. He needed to do laundry as all his clothes smelled as if they had been dragged through dirt, and to top it all off, he had to make a quick stop at the hospital for more blood. His mind was racing as he drove to work. He couldn’t help but think he was missing something as he drove. He was going to be late and he was hoping Emily wouldn’t say anything.

Persephone was a nervous mess. She pulled her hair in a messy bun that may or may not have taken her an hour to perfect. She had pulled a few strands out, framing her face. She decided to not put on any makeup and put on one of her favorite dresses, a lacey white sundress. It had an open lace pattern around the waist while everywhere else had another layer of cotton underneath. It fell just short of her mid thigh. She looked at herself in the mirror, breathing, twisting her body around.

“You look perfect.” Persephone looked at Iz through the mirror. “Stop worrying so much.”

“I can’t help it.” Persephone smoothed down the bottom of the dress, looking out the window. “It’s pretty sunny out today.”

Iz walked in the shadows of the room, getting closer to Persephone. “Uh, uh. You will not use the weather to get out of doing this. We’ve been planning this for a week. Also, I would have wasted my energy looking for this.” Iz dug into her pocket, pulling out a small ring.

“Oh, you found it?” Persephone moved closer to Iz, grabbing the ring from her hand, placing it on her ring finger. The band of the ring was small, holding together two small stones, one amethyst and the other peridot. 

“Yeah, and it wasn’t easy either. I found like 50 rings! Why don’t you have all of them together?”

“I don’t know.” Persephone was still admiring the ring. “That’s a smart idea though.” 

“Great,” Iz rolled her eyes, placing her head in her hand. “Well, you’ve got your ring, the weather isn’t an issue anymore, you gotta leave now if you wanna beat Spencer.”

Persephone wrung her hands together, letting out one more deep breathe. “See you later!” 

Persephone stood in front of the building, looking up at it. “Sixth floor, come on,” Her heels clacked on the floor, as she approached the front desk. It hadn’t taken her long to get through security, although she did move things along, skipping a few steps in the process.

She stepped into the elevator, pressing the button for the sixth floor, her guts rearranging her insides. She bit down on her lip watching the numbers slowly move upwards. As the sixth floor dinged, she closed her eyes, expelling all her nerves in her breath and stepped out of the elevator. She walked down the small space, opening the clear doors into the bullpen. She kept her face neutral, looking around the area.

Many people didn’t pay much attention to her, moving around her with files and items. She noticed a woman sitting at her desk, her blonde hair falling in her face as she was hunched over writing frantically. Persephone walked towards her, her heels alerting the other woman of her presence.

“Excuse me?” The woman looked up, doing a double take. “Do you think you could help me, Agent,” Persephone read the nameplate. “Jareau?”

JJ looked at this mysterious woman. She had a small smile on her face, her brown eyes holding a sense of warmth. JJ was at a loss of words. If someone was to ask her, she would describe her as beautiful. JJ cleared her throat before speaking.

“O-of course. What can I help you with?” JJ put on a smile as well.

“Is Spencer Reid in yet?” Persephone asked fully knowing he wasn’t.

“Actually no, not yet. I could leave a message for him?”

“If you could point me to his desk, I can just wait for him.” Persephone wanted to throw up. She has never had to act this nicely before and it was tiring her out. JJ pointed over at his desk, Persephone following with her eyes. “Thank you Agent Jareau,”

JJ nodded and as soon as Persephone turned around, she whipped out her phone, paperwork forgotten.

JJ: BULLPEN!! NOW!!  Penelope: emergency?? JJ: JUST COME!!!

Penelope shot out of her chair, walking quickly as she could in her wedges towards the bullpen. She walked through the doors, heading straight to JJ’s desk.

“JJ? What’s wrong?” Penelope’s worried tone brought JJ out of her thoughts.

“Look,” She pointed at Spencer’s desk where Persephone was flipping through one of Spencer’s books. Penelope looked over, also doing a double take.

“What’s Persephone doing here?”

JJ gawked at her. “You know her??”

“Spencer asked me to look into her the other day. I asked if they were together and he said it wasn’t like that.”

“What did you find out?” JJ stood up, grabbing Penelope’s arm.

Persephone mindlessly flipped through the book. She hid her smirk as she listened to the two blondes talk about her.

“Tara, Tara,” Penelope grabbed Tara’s arm as she walked through the doors, passing JJ’s desk.

“Whoa, what?” Tara asked. 

“Hot chick at Spencer’s desk. We need the 411 on her.” Penelope spoke quickly.

“Isn’t that your job?” Tara raised her eyebrow at her. Penelope waved her arm.

“Go talk to her!” 

“Why me?”

“You two are desk mates, it makes the most logical sense.”

Tara rolled her eyes. “I’m gonna go talk with Emily, you speak to her.” Tara walked away from the two of them, walking into Emily’s office.

“Fine, I will.” Penelope huffed, fixing her dress before strutting over to Spencer’s desk. JJ tried to stop her, but instead, walked over to Matt’s desk. She took a seat at the desk, pretending to do work there so she could listen in on the conversation.

Persephone glanced upwards at the colorfully dressed woman stopped in front of her. 

“Hi, I’m Penelope.” She stuck out her hand. Persephone smiled brightly, standing up, taking her hand.

“Nice to meet you, I’m Persephone.”

“I know,” Penelope's eyes widened, as Persephone raised an eyebrow.

This must be the person that looked me up. Persephone let out a small laugh. “I didn’t realize Spencer talked about me.”

Penelope let out a small breath. “Oh, he’s mentioned you in passing.” Lie. “He did not do you justice.”

“Thank you?” Persephone tilted her head, playing with the hem of her dress.

“Oh, that’s a compliment. You are very beautiful.” Penelope’s wide smile affected Persephone.

“Thank you, you’re very pretty as well. I love your dress.”

Penelope blushed, waving her hand. “How do you know Spencer?”

“Oh, Spencer’s-”

“Garcia, are you going to introduce your friend?” Persephone peered over Penelope’s shoulder, an older Italian man and a younger Mexican man were standing behind her.

“Oh, uh,” Penelope couldn’t form a sentence.

“Hi, Persephone, pleasure to meet your acquaintance.” Persephone took a few steps forward, placing a hand on Penelope’s shoulder, holding the other one out for the two men to shake.

“Luke Alvez.” Luke was transfixed on Persephone. She felt familiar to him, but couldn’t place where he had seen her before.

“David Rossi,” David kissed Persephone's knuckles. “The pleasure’s all mine.”

Persephone bit her lip, a small blush creeping across her face.

“I didn’t know Penelope had such beautiful friends.” Luke spoke smiling.

“She’s not my friend.” Penelope shook her head. “She’s Spencer’s.” Both Luke and David look at each other, their eyes widening slightly.

Spencer stepped out of the elevator in a huff. He was only ten minutes late. He went to open the doors of the bullpen, but stopped when he saw the group of people surrounding his desk. He furrowed his eyebrows, they seemed circled around someone. Someone he couldn’t see. He pulled the door open.

Penelope was the first to turn. She looked at Spencer who was still standing near the door in confusion. Penelope waved him over, moving over, nudging Luke to move as well. When they parted, Spencer’s movements still, his brain went into overdrive.

His eyes started from the bottom, taking in all of it, her smooth tanned skin, the natural curve of her body. Persephone was standing in the middle of the circle. Her body was angled away from, he could see part of her face. Her lips curved upwards, tilting her face, her slender fingers tucking a piece of her hair behind her ear. She laughed at something David had said while Spencer took a few more steps forward. Persephone’s eyes wandered, noticing the movement and then turned fully to look at Spencer. 

Spencer was utterly confused. What was she doing here? At my work? How long has she been here? What has she told them? “K-Kore,” The words left his mouth with his breath, the only one to hear it was her. Persephone smiled at him, too sweetly, and that’s when Spencer moved.

He rushed forward, Penelope and Luke stepping further away to avoid getting knocked over. Spencer bent down, wrapping his arms around her waist, squeezing her and picking her up.

“What the hell are you doing here?” He whisper shouted in her ear.

Persephone wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling herself closer to him. “To see you, silly.” 

Spencer hated how her voice was too high pitched, it was too preppy, not her at all. She wanted something and he couldn’t figure out what. Spencer placed her back down, her hands still resting on his shoulders.

“I wasn’t expecting you here?”

Persephone tilted her head to the side, feigning confusion. “But, I thought you would have something for me.” 

Spencer was painfully aware of everyone surrounding the two of them, not even trying to pretend they were busy doing other things. Spencer wracked his brain, trying to figure out what Persephone’s game was, he barely registered Penelope's gasp.

Persephone waited patiently, staring into Spencer’s eyes. She started drumming her left hand on his shoulder, but he seemed too far into his own mind to notice. It wasn’t until she looked away and Penelope, whose mouth was covered with her hands that Spencer was able to think clearly.

“Penelope, are you alright?” Persephone tore away from Spencer, who grasped at the empty space she was once in. Spencer looked up facing David who had an unreadable expression on his face.

Penelope shook her head, grabbing Persephone’s hand, staring at the ring on the finger. “Who gave this to you?”

Persephone smiled, looking back at Spencer’s head. “My husband.”

Spencer closed his eyes, putting his head in his hands, swearing. He felt the eyes of his team staring him down and he raised his head, turning around, keeping his eyes steady on Persephone.

“Can I speak to you,” He pulled Persephone’s arm slightly, pulling her away from Penelope. “Privately.”

Persephone nodded as Spencer pulled her out of the bullpen and into the hallway. She turned her head around, giving a small smile and wave to his team.

Emily wasted no time. “Penelope,” When she turned, Emily pointed at the computer on Spencer’s desk and she sat down on his chair, pulling up the video feed of the hallway. Everyone gathered around, watching the scene play out.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen Spencer that angry.” JJ stated. Spencer’s entire body was rigid. He pulled Persephone in front of him, her back facing the wall.

“Look how calm she is.” Luke said. “I mean, if I saw Spencer like that, I’d be pretty scared. She doesn’t even bat an eye.”

“How long have they known each other?” Tara asked.

“I don’t know,” Penelope responded, zooming in closer. “He told me ‘it wasn’t like that’.”

Spencer used his arms, moving his entire body, pointing towards the doors of the bullpen. Persephone stood relaxed, watching his face. She played with the hem of her dress. Her eyes narrowed, responding to something Spencer had said and he caught it. Spencer lowered his arms, dropping his head slightly, running his hands through his hair.

“Whoa, did you see that?” Matt pointed at the screen.

“They’ve known each other for while based on their reactions to one another.” David chimed in.

Emily narrowed her eyes at the screen. “Whoever she is, she’s been in the public eye.”

“What makes you say that?” David asked.

“Look at the way she carries herself. Something Spencer said has made her upset, but look at the posture, nothing but her eyes gives it away. Trust me I’ve pissed off enough royalty to know that look.”

Spencer took a step forward, blocking Persephone’s means of escape and her back hit the wall. He placed his hands on either side on her head, leaning in. Persephone smiled, leaning forward to whisper something in his ear and while doing that, pushed Spencer back, turning their bodies so his back hit the wall.

“Whoa,” Penelope’s eyes widened.

“Penelope, I know you’re going to look into her more so I would expand your search to international as well. I’m 95% positive she’s connected to royalty in some way.” 

Persephone placed a small kiss on Spencer’s cheek, turning towards the bullpen. Penelope closed the browser as everyone else scrambled to look busy. Persephone walked back into the bullpen, heading straight to Spencer’s desk, grabbing a small item on his desk. She turned her head to where Penelope stood, next to Tara’s desk.

“It was really nice meeting you all.” Persephone smiled at her.

“Oh, you as well. I hope we get to see more of you.” Penelope smiled politely.

“Really? Maybe we should get together for dinner. Here,” She grabbed Penelope's phone. “I’ll send you the location.” 

Tara and Penelope watched Persephone leave the bullpen and talk to Spencer while waiting for the elevator.

Spencer let out a breath of relief. He ignored the stares of his team, walking into Emily’s office.

“I need to leave.” He turned around, not bothering to wait for Emily’s response. Emily followed after him, but was stopped by David. He just shook his head.

“He needs to figure this out for himself.”

Persephone sent Penelope a message the next day of the location for dinner.

Seph: Here’s the location! Invite everyone, dress fancy. my treat! Penelope: :)

Since yesterday, Penelope had run Persephone’s number through the database, as well as running an international search on her. She knew it was wrong, but not being able to find anything on her bugged her to her core. She sent out in a group text relaying what Persephone had sent getting a chorus of thumbs up. Everyone wanted to know about this mysterious Persephone. The only person that hadn’t responded was Spencer.

Penelope: Everyone’s in! JJ and Matt were wondering if they could bring their spouses Seph: Of course! The more the merrier! Penelope: Spencer hasn’t responded… Seph: Hmm, that’s alright. I don’t doubt he’ll be there!

Persephone stood outside the restaurant she had picked out, her phone in her hand. She enjoyed talking to Penelope. Her good hearted aura drew her in and she was excited about getting to learn more about everyone. She needed to figure out what she was going to wear. Heading back to Iz’s Bar, she raided through all her clothes, throwing them haphazardly.

“Seph, could you be a little more careful with your clothes?”

“Huh, why?” Persephone barely paid much attention, finding the outfit, gracefully maneuvering between all her clothes towards the jewelry cabinet.

“Because just one of these could pay off all the loans on this place!” Iz threw her hands in the air. “How’d it go?”

“We got into a fight, but his team is really nice. They seemed to really like me.” Persephone held the dress up, looking at the different jewelry. “I’m taking them out for dinner so we can get to know each other!”

“What was the fight about?” Iz walked over, helping Persephone zip up her dress, smoothing out the edges. The dress was a deep red, falling down to her feet. It was strapless with a plunging neckline. The light bounced off the dress making it sparkle.

“‘Why are you here, in my place of work? Are you trying to ruin my life? As if they’d actually like you without your cute princess act.’” Persephone imitated Spencer.

“You look stunning in your dress.” Iz helped Persephone braid her hair. She made a makeshift crown on her head, leaving the rest of her hair to fall down her back in loose curls. “When was the last time you wore this dress?”

Flashback -Italy ~1632

Persephone ran down the corridor, giggling as she bit into the cherry custard she had stolen from the kitchen. She turned the corner almost running into someone.

“Ah, Annette, you scared me,” She chastised her great great great granddaughter.

“What are you doing?” Annette asked her. “If the king find out,”

“Oh please, I have the king wrapped around my finger. For anyone that’s concerned, you’re his daughter and I’m his Imperial Consort.” Persephone ran her hand across her collarbones.

“Rumors are spreading about you though,” Annette pulled Persephone into an empty room. “How the king is pursuing a woman almost as young as his own daughter. What must people think?”

“Just have some fun. It’s not like we’re planning a coup. Loosen up, have some fun. Don’t you have a lesson soon?”

Annette sighed, giving up. “Fine, but you also have to go and learn diplomacy rules and law.” 

Persephone smiled. “Now you’re getting it. There’s a ball tonight, the king is looking around for suitors for you, so be on your best behavior.”

Persephone opened the door, looking both ways before walking into the corridor, Annette following closely behind. 

“Will you come by and help me into my dress?”

“Of course,” Persephone poked Annette’s nose. “You have to help me as well. I’ll bring the dresses around later tonight.”

Present Day

“The night Annette got engaged.” Persephone looked over at the clock. “Oh, I have to go.” She finished putting her jewelry heading downstairs.

“Driver, let’s go.” 

“You hired a driver for tonight?” Iz smirked.

“No, he’s always been my driver,” Persephone smiled at the man in the tux. “Isn’t that right Arnold?”

He smiled at Persephone. “That’s correct. My family has been driving you around for as long as I can remember.” 

Iz shook her head. “You’ve had a driver all this time, and you still make me take the bus whenever you want to hang out?”

“You’ve never asked,” Persephone shrugged her shoulders heading outside, waving a goodbye. “Oh,”

Iz turned around. “Hmmm?”

“You can take one of those dresses if it’ll help you out with your loans and stuff.”

“What I couldn’t!”

Persephone smiled. “Really it’s fine.” She walked out leaving no room for argument.

Persephone sat in the back of the car, making small talk with Arnold as he drove. “How’s the honey? Your kids alright?”

“She’s doing fine, has her hands full with our youngest. Bo’s been running around breaking everything, including himself.” 

They both laughed. “That’s great.” Persephone got out of the car, Arnold helping her out. 

“Thank you, if there’s anything you ever need, don’t be hesitant to ask all right?”

Arnold nodded. “Of course.”

“Don’t stray too far, I’ll call you when I’m ready.”

Persephone stood by the host, waiting. She smoothed down her dress, nervous. She wanted to make a good lasting impression. If Spencer’s friends approved of her, then maybe Spencer will finally see her.

Emily and Penelope got out of the car, glancing at one another as they entered the restaurant. The smooth white tiles, the sounds of their heels clacking against them. One of the walls was a giant fish tank. 

“Wow” Emily let out a low whistle. “Are you sure this is the right place?”

“Yeah, I triple checked.” The two of them walked towards the second entrance.

“Emily, Penelope,” Persephone rose her hand, waving over the two agents.

Emily and Penelope stopped in their tracks for a moment before resuming. “She looks like an actual princess.” Emily whispered.

“She is,” Penelope whispered back. “Or least was, Her grandmother was the queen of a small country near Italy. I don’t know what happened though. Files are still being gathered.”

“Well, I guess we can find out tonight.” The three of them smiled at one another, ready for tonight’s events to unfold.

You've said recently that you want to officialize Garnet and Amethyst into your AU. I'd like to learn more about it!

I’m gonna do better and work on the other Gems (except on the ones I already answered a while ago)...

Garnet and Amethyst have become magical teachers; Garnet teaches advanced fighting techniques, and Amethyst teaches freestyle/impromptu fighting.

Yellow Pearl (now named Lemon) and Blue Pearl (now named Snowy) have become artist and have their own atelier. Goldie Lapis has recently joined them, too.

Spinel and Pink Pearl (now named Taffy because Volleyball is a dumb name) are famous performers and their closing act, the Red Beryl, is the most popular. They are also the proud guardians of a young trans girl named Nora.

Nephrite and her tripulation are now Geodia’s famous and trustworthy engineers.

Feeling inspired by their human friend Lars, the Off-Colors have opened a café of their own.

Bismuth is a famous blacksmith, working on special weapons for Magis alongside Biggs, Crazy Lace and  Snowflake and the Beetles, Sunny and Luna.

The Topazes are now bodyguards at the Magi Headquarters, and Peridot has become an elite member of the HQ’s staff.

The Famethysts are seen everywhere in Arcadia, and Larimar has opened a karaoke bar (because it’s the closest thing of "hearing people scream”).

And several other Gems can be found everywhere throughout Wondaria; living harmoniously with its inhabitants and helping eachother heal.

Episode 123: Room for Ruby

“It's sunny now, but it can always rain later.”

Catch and Release really did change everything. I’ve already discussed it as a paradigm shift, transforming the concept of what the Crystal Gems are: before, a quartet with Steven as the rookie, and after, a fluid group where Steven has some seniority. We’re in an era where Connie, a full-fledged human, is a Crystal Gem. Bismuth, who already was a Crystal Gem but got reintroduced and then left behind, will return as a member of the modern iteration. And two former enemies, Peridot and Lapis, have joined the group (the latter unofficially). So who’s to say a ruby soldier wouldn’t fit in?

Granted, Charlyne Yi’s performs a ruby that’s a little too forgiving, and power combo Raven Molisee (of the highly expressive Molisee’n’Villeco) and Jesse Zuke (of the barnmaster duo Zuke’n’Florido) exaggerate her face and words to the point where it’s at least a little suspicious from the start. But Navy, cleverly named for the gem on her navel just as Army is named for her arm gem, has always been friendly and chipper compared to the other rubies in her squad. It’s believable, despite us never witnessing it, that the other rubies are mean to her for this attitude. And because this is a ridiculous character, it was always possible that her ridiculously jolly attitude was sincere.

That Navy is lying the whole time is irrelevant to the wonder of a show that makes us believe that she might join up. Her betrayal might be predictable, but our status quo is as capable of change as the planet our heroes love; it’s a similar sensation to Alone at Sea, where even though nothing drastic happens there’s a real possibility that Lapis might relapse and go back to Malachite. It’s so much better than an episode where we know from the start that the character-of-the-week will depart by the end of the story.

Navy’s chipper behavior is variably cute and questionable, but I love the massive hint that is the rain sequence. Gems become Crystal Gems when exposed to water, so Navy gets her own little baptism as part of the orientation. But because she’s a false convert, we get artificial rain for her artificial reaction. Yi sells absurd joy as well as absurd frustration, but there’s a cloud hanging over this moment that becomes clearer on rewatch. 

Despite beginning with Steven and Garnet, then bringing Navy along for the ride, Room for Ruby becomes a Lapis Lazuli episode as soon as we head back to the barn. Navy is as one-dimensional as it gets before the reveal, blithely accepting everything that comes her way and seeming incapable of feeling negative emotions, so she needs an external opponent if we want this episode to have a plot. Yes, it’d be fun to see this goofball being a goofball for eleven minutes, but thankfully Steven Universe is willing to go deeper.

Peridot’s bossiness and desire to impress makes her an excellent candidate to teach Navy the ropes, and both can bond with fellow shorty Steven over a shared go-get’em mindset. So it makes sense that our wet blanket is Lapis, who first distrusts Navy and then gets fed up with how easy everything is for her. She’s trying, but seeing another foe-turned-friend have such a smooth go of it isn’t easy, and exploring those emotions of jealousy and inadequacy allows for a wonderful last hurrah before Lapis abandons Earth in Raising the Barn.

Lapis has a tricky role to play here, as she’s straddling the line between protagonist and antagonist depending on how much you trust Navy. Our hero/villain is portrayed sympathetically, as we’re reminded of her traumas and her slow but steady recovery process; she might come across as petty, but it’s understandable pettiness when Navy breezes by in areas where Lapis has struggled. And it helps that unlike fellow Ornery Lapis episode Barn Mates, Navy doesn’t seem to get upset at the negativity; this isn’t Peridot trying to win over a stubborn holdout, it’s a spacy ruby who ignores the venom. But at the same time, Lapis is the only protester in the Navy Parade, and her clash with Steven’s goal of bringing in a new friend makes her a huge bummer. 

Which is why I love this episode’s lesson so much: that it’s sometimes okay to be a huge bummer.

It’s okay because everyone’s going through the world at their own pace, and whether you’re clinically depressed, a survivor of trauma, or you’re just plain sad, it doesn’t make you less worthy than folks in a happier mood. Lapis attempts patience and understanding despite her annoyance, and only snaps when Navy’s attitude turns sickly sweet; feelings of inferiority are hard to work through, but it doesn’t make it okay to be a jerk the whole time. Even after the outburst, Lapis is quick to reassure Navy, acknowledging that it’s an internal problem and apologizing. She wants to like the newcomer, but as soon as she senses the forced perkiness it’s hard for her not to notice that something’s off.

A good twist is something that makes you rethink the plot, but a great twist does this duty while being enjoyable as a plot point on its own merits. The execution of Navy’s betrayal is marvelous, even as it becomes more and more obvious that it’s coming. After spending the whole episode geeking out about Earth stuff, Navy not-so-subtly suggests that she wants to go back to her ship. Steven not only falls for it, but is down to press a huge button without asking follow-up questions; it may seem inconsistent with his growing maturity, but it makes sense that an excitable kid is lost in the joy of making a new friend. The stranger area for me is his exclamation that the Crystal Gems “finally” have a pilot, as if Pearl hasn’t been successfully navigating spaceships this whole time, but again, he’s caught up in the moment.

The twist-within-a-twist is that while Navy has been plotting against our heroes this whole time, her demeanor isn’t part of the act. Yi's transition from earnest giddiness on land versus manic giddiness post-betrayal is worth the price of admission, especially as she merrily explains that she opted not to just steal the ship because she wanted to watch the Crystal Gems suffer. 

And of course, this brings about Lapis’s triumphant laughter at being proven right. Jennifer Paz is awesome throughout the episode, restraining herself when necessary for big bursts of energy to hit home, and it culminates in the sheer joy that comes from righteous vindication. We could’ve gotten a somber moment of Steven’s anguish at being tricked, similar to what we got after Peridot’s duplicity in Message Received, but Lapis allows us a sense of relief despite things going horribly. 

In an episode featuring a character as unsubtle as Navy (being tricky doesn’t stop her from being loud and hammy), I love the quieter story we get from Garnet. We only get a nudge that Navy’s story appeals to Ruby and Sapphire, but we don’t need more than that, so I’m glad we don’t get more. Yes, it would be fun to see Ruby hanging out with Navy, but the episode’s focus is elsewhere and we don’t indulge in fanservice that would take away from the plot. The two balloons Garnet brings at the end are color-coded for convenience, so we don’t need anyone to tell us that the optimistic red message is Ruby’s hopes and the apologetic blue message is Sapphire’s realism. It’s not a novel observation that Steven Universe respects the audience enough to not hold our hands, but it’s still appreciated.

(Also appreciated is a soft moment of Garnet bonding with Steven independent of the plot as they make wishes; Steven may be growing up fast, but he’s still allowed to be a kid sometimes instead of spending every episode in teen angst mode.)

In terms of criticisms, I’m a little torn about the pacing: Room for Ruby meanders a bit in that second act, even though I understand its purpose. Lapis needs to have her tolerance for Navy strained to a breaking point so she’s not throwing a tantrum out of nowhere, so we need multiple examples of frustrating glee. But it does get a little boring on rewatch to have the point driven home again and again that Navy is a perfect little angel, even if it’s all building up to the twist that she’s anything but.

Still, I can’t help but enjoy the nostalgia this structure provides, because major plot points aside, the episode fits right in with classic Season 1. We get a simple story that primes us for an obvious conclusion. Steven will find an unusual solution in his cheeseburger backpack. Steven will learn patience when Pearl takes a while to reform. Steven’s beach party with the Gems and the Pizzas will teach the Gems to respect civilians more. Lapis will grow to accept Navy’s differences. But instead, Steven’s improvisation only goes so far, and he’s impatient again as soon as Pearl returns, and the Gems still don’t care about Fish Stew Pizza, and Lapis’s negative outlook was correct. Steven Universe first made its mark by toying with the conventions of episodes with straightforward morals, and it’s nice to see that legacy continue so late in the series. 

The implications of Navy’s actions are soon made clear, as the loss of the Crystal Gems’ only means of space travel (stolen from the very barn where Steven, Greg, and Pearl first experimented with space travel!) makes Steven’s imminent sacrifice that much weightier. But before that shoe drops, we can enjoy one last glimpse of our favorite little ruby.

(I’m kidding of course, our Ruby is the best ruby.)
