A new way to create realistic 3D shapes using generative AI
Creating realistic 3D models for applications like virtual reality, filmmaking, and engineering design can be a cumbersome process requiring lots of manual trial and error.
While generative artificial intelligence models for images can streamline artistic processes by enabling creators to produce lifelike 2D images from text prompts, these models are not designed to generate 3D shapes. To bridge the gap, a recently developed technique called Score Distillation leverages 2D image generation models to create 3D shapes, but its output often ends up blurry or cartoonish.
MIT researchers explored the relationships and differences between the algorithms used to generate 2D images and 3D shapes, identifying the root cause of lower-quality 3D models. From there, they crafted a simple fix to Score Distillation, which enables the generation of sharp, high-quality 3D shapes that are closer in quality to the best model-generated 2D images.  
     These examples show two different 3D rotating objects: a robotic bee and a strawberry. Researchers used text-based generative AI and their new technique to create the 3D objects.

Some other methods try to fix this problem by retraining or fine-tuning the generative AI model, which can be expensive and time-consuming.
By contrast, the MIT researchers’ technique achieves 3D shape quality on par with or better than these approaches without additional training or complex postprocessing.
Moreover, by identifying the cause of the problem, the researchers have improved mathematical understanding of Score Distillation and related techniques, enabling future work to further improve performance.
“Now we know where we should be heading, which allows us to find more efficient solutions that are faster and higher-quality,” says Artem Lukoianov, an electrical engineering and computer science (EECS) graduate student who is lead author of a paper on this technique. “In the long run, our work can help facilitate the process to be a co-pilot for designers, making it easier to create more realistic 3D shapes.”
Lukoianov’s co-authors are Haitz Sáez de Ocáriz Borde, a graduate student at Oxford University; Kristjan Greenewald, a research scientist in the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab; Vitor Campagnolo Guizilini, a scientist at the Toyota Research Institute; Timur Bagautdinov, a research scientist at Meta; and senior authors Vincent Sitzmann, an assistant professor of EECS at MIT who leads the Scene Representation Group in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and Justin Solomon, an associate professor of EECS and leader of the CSAIL Geometric Data Processing Group. The research will be presented at the Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems.
From 2D images to 3D shapes
Diffusion models, such as DALL-E, are a type of generative AI model that can produce lifelike images from random noise. To train these models, researchers add noise to images and then teach the model to reverse the process and remove the noise. The models use this learned “denoising” process to create images based on a user’s text prompts.
But diffusion models underperform at directly generating realistic 3D shapes because there are not enough 3D data to train them. To get around this problem, researchers developed a technique called Score Distillation Sampling (SDS) in 2022 that uses a pretrained diffusion model to combine 2D images into a 3D representation.
The technique involves starting with a random 3D representation, rendering a 2D view of a desired object from a random camera angle, adding noise to that image, denoising it with a diffusion model, then optimizing the random 3D representation so it matches the denoised image. These steps are repeated until the desired 3D object is generated.
However, 3D shapes produced this way tend to look blurry or oversaturated.
“This has been a bottleneck for a while. We know the underlying model is capable of doing better, but people didn’t know why this is happening with 3D shapes,” Lukoianov says.
The MIT researchers explored the steps of SDS and identified a mismatch between a formula that forms a key part of the process and its counterpart in 2D diffusion models. The formula tells the model how to update the random representation by adding and removing noise, one step at a time, to make it look more like the desired image.
Since part of this formula involves an equation that is too complex to be solved efficiently, SDS replaces it with randomly sampled noise at each step. The MIT researchers found that this noise leads to blurry or cartoonish 3D shapes.
An approximate answer
Instead of trying to solve this cumbersome formula precisely, the researchers tested approximation techniques until they identified the best one. Rather than randomly sampling the noise term, their approximation technique infers the missing term from the current 3D shape rendering.
“By doing this, as the analysis in the paper predicts, it generates 3D shapes that look sharp and realistic,” he says.
In addition, the researchers increased the resolution of the image rendering and adjusted some model parameters to further boost 3D shape quality.
In the end, they were able to use an off-the-shelf, pretrained image diffusion model to create smooth, realistic-looking 3D shapes without the need for costly retraining. The 3D objects are similarly sharp to those produced using other methods that rely on ad hoc solutions.
“Trying to blindly experiment with different parameters, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, but you don’t know why. We know this is the equation we need to solve. Now, this allows us to think of more efficient ways to solve it,” he says.
Because their method relies on a pretrained diffusion model, it inherits the biases and shortcomings of that model, making it prone to hallucinations and other failures. Improving the underlying diffusion model would enhance their process.
In addition to studying the formula to see how they could solve it more effectively, the researchers are interested in exploring how these insights could improve image editing techniques.

3D Reconstruction: Capturing the World in Three Dimensions

3D reconstruction refers to the process of capturing the shape and appearance of real objects using specialized scanners and software and converting those scans into digital 3D models. These 3D models allow us to represent real-world objects in virtual 3D space on computers very accurately. The technology behind 3D reconstruction utilizes a variety of different scanning techniques, from laser scanning to photometric stereo, in order to digitally preserve real objects and environments.
History and Early Developments
One of the earliest forms of 3D scanning and reconstruction dates back to the 1960s, when laser range scanning first emerged as a method. Early laser scanners were slow and bulky, but provided a way to accurately capture 3D coordinates from surfaces. In the 1970s and 80s, raster stereo techniques came about, using cameras instead of lasers to capture depth maps of scenes. Over time, scanners got faster, accuracy improved, and multiple scanning technologies started to converge into unified 3D modeling pipelines. By the 1990s, digitizing entire buildings or archeological sites became possible thanks to the increased capabilities of 3D reconstruction tools and hardware.
Photogrammetry and Structure from Motion
One major development that helped accelerate 3D Reconstruction was the emergence of photogrammetry techniques. Photogrammetry uses 2D imagery, often from consumer cameras, to extract 3D geometric data. Structure from motion algorithms allow one to take unordered image collections, determine overlapping features across images, and reconstruct the camera positions and a sparse 3D point cloud. These image-based methods paved the way for reconstructing larger exterior environments accurately and cheaply compared to laser scanners alone. Photogrammetry is now a widely used technique for cultural heritage documentation, architecture projects, and even film/game production.
Integral 3D Scanning Technologies
Today there are many 3D scanning technologies in use for different types of objects and environments. Multi-view stereo and photometric stereo algorithms fuse together image collections into full and detailed 3D reconstructions even with untextured surfaces.
Applications in Mapping and Modeling
3D reconstruction mapping applications are widespread. Cultural heritage sites are extensively documented with 3D models to make high resolution digital archives and share artifacts globally online. Forensic reconstruction of accident or crime scenes relies on 3D modeling to understand what happened. Engineering companies use 3D scans to digitally inspect parts for quality control. Manufacturers design products in CAD but validate and improve designs with physical prototypes that are 3D scanned. Cities are mapped in 3D with aerial and mobile scanning to plan infrastructure projects or monitor urban development over time. The gaming and animation industries also reconstruct detailed digital environments, objects and characters for immersive 3D experiences. Advancing computing power allows more complex reconstructions than ever before across many industries.
Ongoing Developments and the Future of 3D
There is continued work to improve the speed, resolution, automation and scaling of 3D acquisition techniques. Multi-sensor fusion and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) is leading to capabilities like interior mapping with handheld scanners. Artificial intelligence and deep learning are also entering the field with applications like automatically registering separate scans or recognizing objects in 3D data. On the modeling side, semantics and building information models (BIM) are merging geometric shapes with metadata, properties and relationships. Advances will open the door to dynamic 3D representations that change over time, interaction with virtual objects through augmented reality and further immersive experiences in artificial worlds reconstructed from real environments. The future vision is seamlessly integrating virtual 3D spaces with our daily physical world.

Master Robotics Development with NVIDIA Isaac Sim

NVIDIA and university experts are working together to prepare robots for surgery.
Researchers from the University of Toronto, UC Berkeley, ETH Zurich, Georgia Tech, and NVIDIA created ORBIT-Surgical, a simulation framework for training robots that could improve surgical teams’ abilities while lightening the cognitive load on surgeons.
It supports over a dozen manoeuvres, including grabbing small objects like needles, transporting them from one arm to another, and precisely putting them, that are modelled after the training curriculum for laparoscopic procedures, also known as minimally invasive surgery.
NVIDIA Isaac Sim, a robotics simulation platform for creating, honing, and testing AI-based robots, was used to build the physics-based framework. In order to allow photorealistic rendering, the researchers used NVIDIA Omniverse, a platform for creating and implementing sophisticated 3D applications and pipelines based on Universal Scene Description (OpenUSD), totrain imitation and reinforcement learning algorithms on NVIDIA GPUs.

AI’s Stitch Saves Nine
The foundation of ORBIT-Surgical is Isaac Orbit, a modular robot learning framework based on Isaac Sim. Several libraries for imitation learning and reinforcement learning which educate AI agents to imitate real-world expert examples are supported by Orbit.
Da Vinci Research Kit
With the surgical framework, developers may use reinforcement learning and imitation learning frameworks running on NVIDIA RTX GPUs to train robots, such as the da Vinci Research Kit robot, or dVRK, to manipulate both hard and soft things.
More than a dozen benchmark activities are introduced by ORBIT-Surgical for surgical training, including one-handed tasks like raising a suture needle to a precise location, placing a shunt into a blood vessel, and picking up a piece of gauze. It also includes two-handed activities such as putting a threaded needle through a ring pole, passing a needle between two arms, and stretching two arms to designated locations while avoiding obstructions.
In comparison to current surgical frameworks, the team is able to increase robot learning time by an order of magnitude by creating a surgical simulator that leverages GPU acceleration and parallelization. On a single NVIDIA RTX GPU, they discovered that the robot digital twin could be trained to perform activities like lifting a suture needle and inserting a shunt in less than two hours.
Because rendering in Omniverse provides visual realism, ORBIT-Surgical enables researchers to produce high-fidelity synthetic data that may be used to train AI models for perceptual tasks like identifying surgical instruments in real-world footage taken in operating rooms.
The team’s proof of concept demonstrated how integrating simulation and actual data enhanced an AI model’s ability to distinguish surgical needles from photos, hence lowering the requirement for big, costly real-world datasets for model training.

Many will be talking about geometric fabrics at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), which is being held in Yokohama, Japan, from May 13–17. One of the seven publications that members of the NVIDIA Robotics Research Lab and their collaborators have submitted addresses that topic.
Geometric fabrics: what are they?
Trained policies in robotics are inherently approximative. While they generally act appropriately, on occasion they may move the robot too quickly, bump into objects, or jerk it around. One may never be certain of what might happen.
Therefore, when trained policies, particularly those trained through reinforcement learning, are applied to a physical robot, a layer of low-level controllers is used to intercept the policy’s commands. After that, they convert the orders to meet the hardware’s constraints.
Run those controllers with the policy while you’re training RL policies. The researchers discovered that vectorizing those controllers to make them available for use during training and deployment was a special feature that could be provided with their GPU-accelerated RL training tools.This study aims for that.
Humanoid robot businesses, for instance, might showcase demonstrations of their devices using low-level controllers that not only maintain the robot’s balance but also prevent it from running its arms into itself.
The controllers that were vectorized by the researchers come from their previous work on geometric fabrics. At the previous year’s ICRA, the paper Geometric Fabrics: Generalising Classical Mechanics to Capture the Physics of Behaviour, took home the best paper prize.
Surgical Orbit
NVIDIA Isaac Sim powers photorealistic rendering in ORBIT-Surgical, a physics-based surgical robot simulation framework running on the NVIDIA Omniverse platform.
In order to train imitation learning and reinforcement learning algorithms that support the research of robot learning to supplement human surgical skills, GPU parallelization is utilised. It also makes it possible to generate synthetic data for active perception tasks that is realistic. The researchers show off the sim-to-real transfer of learnt policies onto a real dVRK robot utilising ORBIT-Surgical.
Upon publication, the underlying ORBIT-Surgical robotics simulation application will be made available as a free, open-source package.

Pixar animation studios are know to use their own private soft ware called Presto (named after the 2008 short film) this was originally called Menv however was updated to presto in 2012 some time around the creation of the movie Brave. The software is known to be familiar to cell to cell animators in its function
its interface closely resembles software like maya and blender but has many different qualities these programs don't. Presto allows artists to work in a scene in real time with full resolution geometric models.
Presto at first was incapable of handling collaborative work, to solve this Pixar came up with USD the frame work for the interchange of 3d computer graphics data. This focuses on collaboration and allows many artists to work on the same scene or model on different layers without stepping on each others toes.
Pixar also have a software called RenderMan also produced by the studios to render all their in house 3d animated movies. RedenerMan is also licensed as a product for 3rd parties.

Presto is useful however it is extremely specific to the needs of whatever Pixar is doing at the time. the software is only usable because the team who wrote it and continue to edit and refine it are so close by.

Understanding the process of 3D Animation
3D animation is basically the idea of creating moving objects in a 3 dimensional digital environment, as opposed to regular animation we are used to, which is largely 2 dimensional. The images are supposed to have 3 dimensions, and move within a three dimensional space, or at least appear to do so, because similar to 2D animation, 3D animation process also involves a series of consecutive images that appear to move since they are shown in a very fast sequence.
There are three main steps to a 3D animation process, without getting into complex details:

·         Modeling
In this phase, the objects and characters are constructed. This basic phase of 3D animation process uses mathematical representation for all the elements. A shape is taken and molded into a completed 3D mesh. A simple object or a “primitive” is taken and is extended and grown into a shape that can be refined and detailed. A geometric surface representation of any object can be achieved in specialized 3D software such as Maya or 3Ds Max. The 3D models are then given details like color and texture. This is followed by a process known as rigging, which sets up a skeleton for the animation character that will allow it to move.
·         Layout and Animation
After the previous work is complete, one can move on to the actual animation, which is the next step in 3D animation process. Here, the 3D object created can be moved around freely. There's keyframe animation, in which the animator manipulates the objects frame by frame, much like traditional hand-drawn cartoons.
