Wingbeans

The funny little griffin-y things colloquially known as wingbeans are flightless, roughly cat-sized, seemingly mammalian creatures with curious nature.

They resemble bipedal cats with chicken feet, but not quite. They are usually covered in soft, floofy fur, except for their hind legs and pawpads. They have soft snoot covering their mouths, which they will boop into things and people they like. Snoot bumps are their way of saying hello.

They have big, bright eyes with vertical slit pupils, and their nostrils are hidden beneath the floof of the snoot. They trust their sight and hearing more than their sense of smell.

They have short arms with three fingers, that are usually held tucked against their chest. The fingers usually have hidden cat claws.

Their wings are small and covered in soft, fluffy feathers, that are used mostly as display and as an additional pair of arms when climbing. The wings have five fingers in a fluff mitten, each having a paw pad, which is where the name wingbean comes from. In a wild type 'bean only the thumb of the wing has a retractable claw, like a cat, to use as climbing grip and for defence.

Their legs are usually hairless from ankle down, and have four toes, three pointing forwards and a small dewclaw pointing backwards. The foot claws are dull, and non-retractable.

They usually have long floofy tails, though there are short tailed and even bobtailed variations. It is also possible to have a tuft tipped tail.

Wingbeans are omnivorous, and as a species aren't picky about what they eat, though personal preferences vary wildly.

Wingbeans can have anywhere between 1 and 4 kittens (also called beanies or beanlings) at a time, most often 2. The kittens are born within a soft leathery egg shell, and they hatch usually within few hours after birth. They nurse their young like mammals.

Mom takes care of the kittens untill they're big enough to fend for themselves, though the offspring often stays nearby even as adults. The 'beans are social creatures who enjoy hanging out with friends, so big family groups (be they actually related or adopted) aren't unusual.

Wingbeans are considered fully grown at one year old, and in the wild their life span tends to be around 20 years, though domesticated 'beans can get a lot older.

Wild wingbeans come in a wide variety of markings and their colors cover all shades of browns and grays, but some have been bred to display brighter colors and strange markings, including unnatural ones. All coat types and lengths are possible; short haired, long haired, curly coated, maned, etc.

They have no apparent sexual dimorphism, and gender appears to be an optional feature to them.

Wingbeans are meant to be fun creatures, and to bring joy and fun.

Wingbeans are not meant for making money. They can be created freely, and they may be gifted, but they shall not be sold.

If you want to get rich by making weird little griffin-y things, make your own species.

Can I make my own wingbean?

Yes you can!

Can I make wingbean adoptables?

As long as you don't sell the designs for real life money. Giving them away for free, or trading them for virtual stuff such as virtual petsites' in-game currency, or things like art or poetry is fine.

Can I make wingbean NFTs/sell them for crypto stuff?

No.

Can I commission people to draw my wingbean?

Yes! Also, while wingbeans themselves aren't meant to be bought with money, do pay artists for the work they do. Artists need to eat too.

Can I commission an artist to design me a wingbean?

I'd say that still counts under the commission clause, so yes.

Can I use them in my D&D/TTRPG campaign?

Sounds fun, sure!

What if I want my wingbean to have rainbow colors?

Sure. Maybe your 'bean was bred by a wizard or something. Have fun!

Can my wingbean have raptor claws?

Sounds awesome. Go for it!

Can my wingbean have horns or other fancy details?

Did your 'bean wander in the way just as you were about to cast polymorph, didn't it?

You said they are flightless, but what if I want my wingbean to be able to fly?

Sounds like it was either born with bigger wings, or it can levitate. Either way sounds cool.

Can I make a wingbean of a big cat species?

That might stretch the definition of a wingbean, but if you feel like it's still wingbeany enough, then sure, go for it!

Do they have whiskers?

They can, if you want.

Are wingbean legs scaly like bird feet, or leathery?

Whichever you want. Both are good.

Are there any rare or limited features or markings?

The rarity of those depend entirely on what kinds of 'beans people create. If half the people making wingbeans decide to make theirs blue, then I guess blue isn't a rare color at that point, now is it?

But how will I know if my wingbean is special?

It's special because it's yours. No wingbean belongs behind paywalls.

What would a hairless wingbean look like?

Considerably less fluffy.

What are your thoughts on Athos' old city and their level of technology before they went more nomadic? Like Teyla's crazy lighter we never saw again, or the drawings of their old cities. Were they more advanced when that one Wraith started experimenting on them genetically or had their cities already fallen? Has their art and culture changed? Or stayed traditional)?

first of all thank you i'm glad you enjoyed them!! i love any and all excuses to talk about stargate characters so i'm glad y'all enjoy it so much!

okay so i have been rotating this in my brain since last night so sorry for the delayed response but i actually have not put much thought into this before and i love the idea so i've been thinking a lot

first, i think the athosian's were INCREDIBLY technologically advanced. like, insane medical technology, incredibly fast vehicles (you just KNOW they would've had an amazing train system of my god it would've been everything) and i think the average person was INCREDIBLY smart, like i think the athosians had incredibly high iqs compared to the rest of pegasus (this is because despite living most of her life as a nomad, teyla picks up everything rodney teaches her SO FAST like he says it once and she knows and understand it's perfectly you cannot tell me that girl is not a fucking genius there's nothing she can't do)

also i think them being so advanced is why that wraith chose them for experimentation, but i think it was specifically because of their medical technology. i think the athosians had some of, if not the best medical technology in pegasus and the wraith knew this so that one wraith started using their medical knowledge of humans to do the genetic experimentation (bc let's be honest i doubt the wraith cared enough to do research into human genetics but i'm guessing you need to have a base understanding of human genetics to alter human genetics)

i think the experiments are also probably at least partially responsible for the downfall of the athosians. we know the wraith will seek out and destroy any groups that even have a possibility of advancing too far, and if you take the level of technological advancement they were at and combine that with the powers the humans were getting after being experimented on, you're left with what could be a pretty big threat towards the wraith. i can definitely see the wraith realizing what's going on and destroying everything so that no other human (or wraith) could continue with those experiments.

anyways back to the athosians and their culture, i think because of the result of their medical advancements and how it lead to their downfall, i think after the destruction of their city, the athosians kinda swore off science? and i think they would start prioritizing spirituality/religion and focusing on community and relationships with other people and that's why the athosians have such a big network of trade partners

okay this has gotten super long so i'm gonna stop it here but thank you so much for this ask bc this is such an incredible thing to think about and i do not go insane about teyla enough which is frankly criminal of me so thank you for the excuse to think about her non-stop 🙏🏼

hey kandi 💗✨ as you know, i am a huge fan of your fics and your art and your fic recs and everything else 🥹 but i can't make sense of how you manage to do it all.

how long did it take you to plan the whole year of fic recs, how long in advance do you decide on the actual fics for each day, and how do you balance this and writing? and did you sort of select all the fics already, or do you still read and add to your recs as you go?

You're so sweet, thank you so much for following along ❤ I started with the planning for these ficrecs sometime last October and have been slowly but surely adding to the sprawling spreadsheet that documents my decent into fanfic madness. I'd say I've probably got the posts up until June or July in my drafts and ready to be posted, but whenever I find a fic I love that I feel fits the theme, I still constantly change things around. To be fair though, a lot of these are fics and authors that I've had bookmarked for a really long time and always wanted to recommend, so I didn't need to go and search for at least half of them.

Still, as a result of this project I've read more fanfics in these past few months than I probably have in the two years previous, and I'm enjoying the hell out of it. I've found so many more fics and authors that I love, and sharing that love makes me incredibly happy. Of course, this somewhat cuts into the time I'd usually spend on writing, which is why I have been mostly recycling my tumblr ficlets on AO3 instead of writing anything new, but I'm having a great time, so it's a fair trade-off, I think 😉

The most fun though has been whenever someone tells me they've really enjoyed one of the fics I've recommended or that they've ended up finding a new author that they like. That makes me so happy, because I love each and every one of these fics, and I want them to get the love and attention they deserve. And also the realization that there is so much fic in this fandom that I can literally pick any trope I like and find at least 30 awesome fics to rec for that week is the fucking best. We are truly blessed in this fandom, and it's great to be reminded of that.

Copper King: Mostly involuntary regression, but I'll say for voluntary, a pacifer + oversized jacket, and being talked to in a soft, calming voice. Being told a story, maybe, or just being taught things that he's really interest in.

Count Fwhip: Varies day-to-day, could be a paci one day but not the next, and maybe one time that fuzzy blanket made him instantly baby space but this time he's just chilling and writing letters while cozied up with it.

Archaeologist. Pix: Teaching him things! He gets so excited. Also being in his froglight orchard makes him feel small and fuzzy inside.

Goblands Fwhip: So many things! Very excitable little guy, but like... pacis + teething rings are the way to go to ease him into regression.

9🦇 Do Your Likes Change When Regressed ~

Not really for either! Interests become more intense, but like... nothing new?

10⏳ Do You Have A Baby Voice In Headspace ~

Copper King/Arch Pix: Not really? The copper king is non-verbal when he's small, or very slightly verbal, and anything he says is slurred around a pacifier and almost indecipherable. Arch. Pix also doesn't really talk, he prefers to listen, but he will very quickly and excitedly babble about anything and everything if you ask, and mess up a lot of words doing it, so kinda.

Count Fwhip + Goblands Fwhip: Yes!! He's just a little guy, he dunno nothing about words, lots of dropped letters and made up words from this kiddo!

14⭐ Dragons, Unicorns Or Fairies ~

For copper king/arch pix dragons 100% love dragons want to know everything about dragons, fascinated by them

I think for count/goblands fwhip same thing with dragons, but count fwhip might have a more vested interest in faries because he believes they're real :)

16💫 Neon, Pastel, Neutral Or Dark Pallets ~

All of them are definetly more neutral/dark pallets, maybe some pastel every so often.

17🐮 Favorite Regression Clothes ~

Copper King/Arch Pix: Over sized blue jacket!! He has it in multiple sizes and wears the different size ones depending on how small he feels (pretty sure I stole this from you /lh) and also just normal pants/comfy pants

Count Fwhip: Dresses/Skirts + a shirt that doesn't feel gross on his skin if he chews the neck part. Flowy clothes are more fun to play in!

Goblands Fwhip: Comfy Cozy clothes, fuzzy and warm but difficult to ruin because he is rambunctious.

19🐭 Do You Collect Stickers ~

Copper King/Arch Pix: Yes!! They love to collect stickers from their friends, probably have sticker books so they don't get ruined.

Count Fwhip/Goblands Fwhip: Less the type to collect and more the type to have some a put them all over his empire and other people's empires

22🦄 Finger Paint Or Brushes ~

Copper King: Finger paint! His favourite activity to do with Joel when they are small together (reminds me of what I'm doing for our art trade!) is use the mezelean dyes/paints to finger paint! They have lots of fun together.

Count Fwhip: Probably also finger paint just because his fine motor control is limited to building + redstone only, holding brushes does not cooporate with him when he's on the smaller end of the scale, so finger painting is better for him.

Arch. Pix: He likes brushes just because it's more control over what he's doing, and he likes to paint things for his friends and want's it to be as amazing and totally awesome and cool as possible

30🐱 Sleep In Crib Or With CG ~

Copper King: Preferably neither, haha! He likes to pretend he doesn't need to regress, and sleeps just fine in his adult bed thank you very much! But when he's a baby, probably with someone? Just for comfort, since he's a very stressed out little guy who just needs some cuddles and someone to rub his back while he falls asleep.

Count Fwhip: Neither too, but like he was to sleep near Gem, in the same area if not the same bed when he's small. She's his twin!! He loves her to death and just wants to sleep knowing she is near by.

Arch. Pix: Probably a crib, actually. I think he's the kinda kiddo to roll out of bed a lot, to the point where he's pretty good at catching himself, but when he's little his reaction time is slower and he's gotten a couple of bruises, and a spranged wrist, from doing it incorrectly/too slowly, so I think while not like a proper crib, he'd have gaurd rails on his bed (and they'd make him feel oh so small, like a little kid. He likes to drag his fingers across the bars and listen to the quiet noise of the wood, it's soothing.)

Goblands Fwhip: Crib! He's a little guy, and he likes to be small to fall asleep because it makes cuddling his stuffies feel much softer and nicer, but a normal bed is just uncomfy, he wants to feel protected, and a crib does that for him!

41🚀 Favorite Game ~

Copper King: Hide and seek! Or more specifically, hide and entertain himself for a while because other people are stressing him out. And it's a no talking game which is a bonus!

Count Fwhip: I think he likes to play games with Gem + Sausage, maybe tag or like doing tricks, that kind of stuff. Something active.

Arch. Pix: I think he'd still really enjoy hide and seek, but also scavenger hunts!! Or just finding things and showing them to people, he loves to just pick stuff up and stick it in his pockets because Joel/Fwhip/Scott/whoever would probably find it interesting and he'll see them at somepoint right?

Goblands Fwhip: He just likes to play anything, silly little chaotic gremlin boy, he likes to do pranks and that kind of stuff, probably hiding and spooking people as they walk by (but not too badly! also gives himself away because he's little and giggling the whole time and anyone can hear it from a mile away)

47🐛 Do You Believe In Fairies ~

Copper King -> Not really? Like there's a lot of magic so hypothetically yes, but when he's small he just... it's not on his mind? He has The Vigil/Death thing going on, so fairies are much of a strech, but he doesnt like... actively believe in them.

Count Fwhip: 100%, absolutely without a doubt, have you seen some of the empires with all their crazy plants? Only fairies could do that.

Arch. Pix -> When big sort of? He definitely believes/likes to believe in all kinds of stuff like that, both big and small. When he is little he'll build fairy houses in the froglight orchard. There's a fairy ring not to far from the catacombs, he always makes sure to avoid it.

Goblands Fwhip: Yes, once again. He lives near the deep dark, if skulk exists why shouldn't fairies??

53🍃 What Pulls You Out Of Headspace ~

Copper King -> He can psyche himself out of headspace if he gets too anxious about people needing things, or if someone is mean to him about something/teases him he can pull himself out because he no longer feels safe, even if the intial regression is involuntary, if he's too overwhelmed he can pull himself out. Also probably being around littles who are younger than him, since his brain wants to be a caregiver instead.

Count Fwhip: Probably not a lot, if he manages to properly regress, but when he's bouncing around probably loud noises/not feeling safe would pull him out of it sometimes (though sometimes it pushes him further in), and maybe being like... babied to much right out of the gate when he's feeling over would make him feel weird and like he'd pull himself out (although it could make him a baby, could go either way)

Arch. Pix -> Feeling awkward/out of place around certain people when he's regressed would pull him out of headspace.

Goblands Pix: Being mean to him :( he's just a baby, but if he gets in trouble/is made fun of for something he'll force himself out of headspace

54🍏 Are You Scared Of Bugs ~

I don't think any of them are! Copper King no, he has a great appreciation for what they do, and while he may not like them all, he's not scared of them. Count Fwhip maybe some?? But like not in general.

Archaeologist Pix loves them!! So does Gobland Fwhip! The sillies love bugs, they could stare at them for hours.

62🎃 Do You Sleep With A Stuffie ~

Copper King: Not so much? He has them, but doesn't really sleep with them. Maybe if he's super small and it's offered he'll take one, but not on the forefront of his mind.

Count Fwhip + Grimlands Fwhip: Yes!! He loves them, they are important to him when small, he likes to cuddle when the shadows get to big or it gets too cold, so they are the perfect substitute for an actualy person.

Arch. Pix: Yesss! He tucks them in, and they have tea parties in the frog orchard and fall asleep on picknet blankets!

88🌼 What’s A Nostalgic Place For You ~

Copper King + Count Fwhip: Pixandra + Grimlands -> I like the idea of Grimlands + Pixandrai being quite intertwined as two old empires on the fritz with one another, and that Pix and Fwhip both spent a lot of time at eachother's empires as children + growing up and both places are nostalgic to them. For Pix also Mezelea, just because I like to think that Joel would have been quite close to him as a child, as Pix was a ruler long before Joel was, so he helped him get everything in order when Joel was crowned king of mezelea, so specifically the mezelean palace is nostalgic for him

Arch. Pix + Gobland Fwhip: The Catacombs for Pix 100%, I think that when he first got established in the lands, he found a lot of comfort in the weighted, but peaceful, presence of the catacombs (also ghosts!) and it just feels safe for him, and it's nostalgic to retrace some of the first steps he took as an archaeologist in this land of empires for him. As for Fwhip, he definitely has lots of nooks and crannys in Gobland that he would escape to as a child, and the ones he can still squeeze himself into have a very nostalgic feeling for him.

Jackity is a highly problematic ship on its own already. Jack and Quackity basically never interact on DSMP and forcing two people who never interact to kiss is literally so weird. BUT KETTLE HAD TO MAKE IT WORSE and make this a tntduokiss redraw, making it both art theft AND a reference to the most problematic ship out there. CANCELLED.

Ok nobody be mean to Key(s) for this one but it's kind of problematic. How do you not know what forums are. Like the internet forums. Hell even the greek forums? Really? Don't go after Key(s) or harass slime for this, just beware.

Pep has admitted to not shipping anyone with c!Jack. Which is honestly really suspicious. I don't care for their reasoning for this, just the fact that they won't involve c!Jack Manifold in any homosexual ships just rubs me the wrong way. hello!! I saw your Spencer Reid headcanons and I LOVE IT!! I'd like to put my own in, if that's okay! I'm around 5'5, I have short brown hair with matching eyes. I've always felt super SUPER insecure about my nose, though-- it seems too flat for my face. my style completely ranges, but I stick more towards a 'flashy' esque-- I like being impressionable to whoever I see, even if I've known them for years! I'm an ENTP. My interests are musical theater, art, basically anything in the fine arts and I love it! except for instruments... not very good with those. though I am trying to get back into piano! I'm (ironically) learning "The Smile of a Child", better known in it's appearance in the episode "Coda". I love singing, it's a huge passion of mine. I'm very outgoing, and I like meeting people, but I'm more than a bit awkward while meeting new people. I only like eye contact after looking over someone's body language, and learning their name. I'm insecure about my laugh but I rock it-- I just think I'm a bit too loud and obnoxious at times. I study psychology in my free time-- especially the aspects that sleep has on our lives. Just last night I talked to my friend about getting more sleep! I'm caring, and I stress bake A LOT-- I won the "Betty Crocker" award in my company. Another thing I do to wind down is to listen to music-- I usually listen to Bruno Major to wind down for the night. 3 -- What’s a fic idea that you have but haven’t written yet?

omg no bc ive had this idea for a modern au (yes yes another one i know i just love them) where the team is all at university but the kicker is theyre all on the soccer team, with the exception of lance who is a cheerleader and coran who is the coach. one day while playing a rly nasty rival team keith gets injured and cant keep playing, so lance, who is present at all of their practices bc he loves his friends (and who also helps coran come up with play strategies) grabs an extra pair of cleats and fuckin TEARS IT UP on the field in his cheer skirt. just kicks absolutely ass. i just have to transer this from my brain to the google doc 😭😭

im actually rly proud of this whole fic, but i thought i captured lance's character rly well in this one scene in particular:

Luckily for Lance, he’s not the only person on this ship who grew up with siblings. Everyone here knows the art of chore trading. 

He catches Hunk in the morning, holding a laundry hamper far away from his body and scowling at it. 

“Hunk! Buddy, pal, light of my life!” he calls, forcing himself to sound cheerful and possibly even mischievous. He cannot sound desperate, that’s Negotiation 101.

Hunk squints at him suspiciously. “You only call me ‘light of your life’ when you want something,” he accuses. 

Lance clutches his hand to his chest. “You wound me!” he gasps dramatically. “I am heartbroken! The disdain, the accusations – baseless, if I may add – maim me so! My heart! My feelings! My delicate composition –”

“What do you need, Lance,” Hunk interrupts, but he’s grinning. 

Ha! Lance’s dramatics do come in handy, thank you ever so much. He made a grumpy Hunk smile. 

“I have actually come to offer you something, from the generosity of my own heart,” Lance says. “You see, my dearest friend, my love, the man after my own heart –” Hunk rolls his eyes, but doesn’t stop Lance’s theatrics – “I know you despise laundry with every part of your soul. So I, the gracious do-gooder that I am, am offering a trade. A switcheroo, if you will. I’ll take your horrible laundry duty today, and you get to do the slightly less horrible job of cleaning the pods.”

Hunk raises an eyebrow, but he thankfully looks like he’s considering the offer. “What’s in it for you?”

Not having a panic attack, Lance thinks, but he obviously doesn’t say this. “You not telling Shiro we switched so I can safely and subtly snoop through Keith’s shit and he thinks it’s you,” Lance says instead.

As you know in the Pastafarian religion, there’s a beer volcano in heaven.  And you know who else likes a beer volcano?  Matt Murdock! You cannot tell me that Josie's beer wouldn't make an awesome Beer Volcano! And Matt Murdock, who is played by Charlie Cox and coincidentally, was the subject of a gif I added to a comment about keeping one’s temper that…and here’s where it gets weird!  caused these two awesome people to plan this trading of pasta-rings or at least of pixels, would definitely approve.  If that’s not pirate-y enough for you, chomp on this:  Beer Volcano Matt Murdock.  Bam.  You see what I’m cooking here?  It’s like the Flying Spaghetti Monster dripped marinara all over this!

And that’s what tumblr and Pastafarianism is all about!  It’s the pure serotonin that happens when mutuals get on the same wavelength and keep a bit going for about 100 posts. I don't know if it's actually been 100, I wasn't keeping track. Do you think I type like this all the time? No! No one else will read this, especially that dude from 20 years ago that I had a crush on who insinuated he'd like to read my fanfic and I really hope he doesn't, because it's a mess. There's no way it's going to make a good impression on him. Seriously, just an absolutely directionless three-legged dog of me trying to find myself as a writer. I'm just writing it to make myself happy.

It limps along but you know the thing about dogs? They never feel sorry for themselves. We see a three-legged dog and go 'awwww, poor puppy!' and the dog is like 'hey, I'm still moving and doing my thing, everything's copasetic!' And likewise, no one else has to read my stupid and ill-conceived double-derived drivel. It's mary-sue-esque, half-insert fluff and smut (and thanks for the encouragement in that area @jenksel ! You will be my downfall. Much love!) that probably tells people way too much about me and I'm constantly 20 minutes from nuking my entire online presence from orbit. Kill it with fire!

And hey, speaking of killing things with fire, I really do want to go to Burning Man, where apparently there's a metric ton of skinny people throwing an art show and being wacky in the desert. That's enough for anyone who's ever enjoyed a sammich to eventually have an existential crisis. They ought to fly the Samaritans out there just for moral support and occasional free rub-downs with SPF 80+. And now please notice that this nefarious plan will put elderly British people in the middle of the Nevada desert; if the juxtaposition of Burner culture and Colonizer culture is not comedic gold waiting to happen, I'll eat my stylish pirate hat. I'm hoping for Are You Being Served? but with sunburn.

Seriously though, deserts are dangerous on all levels for humans, which is why most of ancient humanity spent a ton of energy on leaving the freaking desert.

But one thing my extensive research about Burning Man has turned up: You are responsible for your well-being. Eat the strawberries if a tiger is coming for you, babes. Write the words, dance in the moonlight, drink the mead, crush on the person you might have had a chance with, or the ones that will never know your name. Take responsibility for your own happiness.  Whatever you decide to do, the Flying Spaghetti Monster hopes you will maximize your well-being and the well-being of all sentient beings, on this, your 45% of a special day and every day.

Assorted Thoughts On The Super Mario Bros. Movie Trailer

Yesterday’s release of the teaser trailer for Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment’s long-in-gestation Super Mario Bros. animated film unsurprisingly posted a whole host of Disk Horse, up to and including the voice cast, which includes celebrities like Chris Pratt and Jack Black as Mario and Bowser, among many others. Since these are among my favorite subjects to endlessly pontificate on, here’s a list of a various thoughts I had on the trailer and various flavors of opinions being tossed around:

-In terms of the trailer itself, I was quite suitably impressed! I was skeptical of the ability to thread the needle between the requirements of an American family film and the more freewheeling Japanese whimsy of the Mario franchise at large. Especially since, well, the last time we tried, we got 1993′s Super Mario Bros., an infamously bizarre boondoggle that seemed to think kids really wanted to see a cyberpunk dystopian version of the Mushroom Kingdom. Not helping is that Illumination is fairly hit or miss as a studio. The first Despicable Me remains an enjoyable outing (though I prefer that year’s Megamind in terms of a supervillain reformation story), and I liked Sing quite a bit more than I thought I would, largely thanks to Garth Jennings applying his history as a music video director to animation in ways I thought were quite novel. But on the whole, they exemplify much of what I dislike about American family films: loud, frenetic, barely letting the audience have a breath, and when they DO try and slow down and be dramatic, it rarely works in the same deft way that their competitors have made a stock in trade. In particular, I will never forget or forgive the complete fuckup that is the film version of The Lorax, one of the worst major animated features of the past decade.

-By contrast, directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic of Teen Titans Go fame (or infamy, depending on your POV) seem to have succeeded quite well at showing off a slightly gentler fantasy adventure vibe based on this glimpse. The primary focus on a singular sequence-Bowser’s invasion of the penguin kingdom-is smart, building tension with his arrival and then decimation, balancing things well with comedy beats like the penguins’ ineffectual snowball throwing. Even the penguin king (Khary Payton, likely doing a favor for his TTG buddies) comes off as a distinct character with the contrast between his regal manner and diminutive design. And the transition to Mario landing in the Mushroom Kingdom (seemingly going back to his original backstory of being a plumber from New York rather than a native), then meeting Toad is artful. Toad himself, played by a pitched-up Keegan Michael-Key, gets a funny moment that is refreshingly non-obnoxious, and we get a quick tease of Luigi (Charlie Day, perfect casting, no notes) running in fear from a bunch of Dry Bones into a gothic castle.

-Bowser himself is just fucking awesome and is very likely to be the best thing about this film. I had already been onboard for Black’s casting because he’s proven to be an excellent voice actor in the past with starring roles like Po in the Kung Fu Panda franchise. What pleasantly surprised me here that he’s thoroughly committing to a monster-y growl as Bowser rather than just using his normal voice. And he’s quite menacing in a way I’ve never quite heard from him before, booming and throwing his considerable weight around. I’m eager to see how he balances that with Bowser’s more comedic side, especially as relating to his amorous intentions towards Princess Peach. (Also, he’d better have a proper Villain Song)

-Which brings us to the other casting, namely Chris Pratt as Mario, who only gets two quick lines here. I was as confused as anyone by the casting at first, but his initial showing here has me more convinced he can pull off the creators’ vision for the part. Namely, he seems to be applying a faux New York accent rather than attempting to imitate Charles Martinet’s high-pitched iconic Italian squeakiness. I think this is a good acting decision on multiple fronts. I can’t picture that voice working well across the space of a feature film if we are meant to take Mario seriously as a character, and going for a lighter accent is easier to keep up across a full performance.

-Of course, this is hardly the only reason his casting was met with controversy and derision. Pratt, once a darling of the internet for projects like Parks & Recreation and Guardians of the Galaxy, has become more divisive in recent years due to both his acting limitations being exposed in other films and some apparently poor social views due to being both Christian and a member of a homophobic California church called Hillsong. Pratt himself has not said much on the matter beyond some slightly lunkheaded comments about Hollywood not being interested in blue-collar action movie protagonists. Now, as a queer guy myself, I certainly don’t like this about his life, but since he has not been an openly hateful presence to my knowledge (I don’t even know if he still attends Hillsong), it’s been easier to ignore. He has also been defended by his Guardians director James Gunn (who famously has a “no assholes on set” rule) and his Jurassic World co-star Bryce Dallas Howard, who recently revealed he helped negotiate an equal salary for her on those films. I don’t begrudge anyone who looks askance at him for his associations, but to me at least, this is not a situation like Jared Leto, who is both a weak/limited actor at this point in his career AND an asshole diva who may also be a cult leader via his shitty band.

-And there’s the other side of this, which is the actual talent scale. Like many actors who settle into screen star personas, Pratt has decided on “goofy manchild action hero” being his stock in trade for the most part. This is reflected in aforementioned roles like Guardians (where a frequent part of Quill’s character development is trying and not always succeeding to grow past those tendencies), as well as his voice acting roles like Emmet in The Lego Movie and Barley in Onward (a role that would have arguably been played by, well, Jack Black ten years ago). I don’t think this in and of itself is a problem, especially if they are pitching Mario to be an everyman protagonist. And let’s be honest, that’s at least SOMETHING compared to his current status as a monosyllabic mascot. Much like his Sega counterpart Sonic the Hedgehog, you need a little more meat to chew on in a feature film context. I think Pratt has done well in these roles (Onward in particular has some real heartbreaking moments thanks to his interplay with Tom Holland) and has thus proven he can hang in with a lead role that fits this context, as this Mario seems to be.

-Finally we come to the last part of the debate: whether Pratt should be playing this role at all compared to Martinet, who has paid his dues for over 25 years as the official voice of this character. I have no issue with Martinet; he has fulfilled that task admirably as well as offered more ambitious work as characters like Paathurnax in Skyrim. And he seemingly has a cameo in this film, which could net him more visibility and appreciation. Career voice actor Kevin Michael Richardson also has a role as Kamek, Bowser’s court wizard, in the film, so it doesn’t seem like that side of the industry is being ignored entirely (esp. since, as said, Horvath and Jelenic work quite extensively with actors like Payton and Richardson). But it has opened up the debate about picking high-profile celebrities compared to career VAs, who often do a lot more work and even now don’t always get the recognition they deserve. Let me be clear on my own standing: I adore voice acting and voice actors of all stripes. I consider some like the aforementioned Richardson, the king of kings Mel Blanc, Rob Paulsen, Frank Welker, Matthew Mercer, Cree Summer, Eric Bauza, and Laura Bailey to be among my personal icons and heroes. They absolutely deserve credit, respect, and proper pay for what they do.

-However. I think that we are in a place now where we can admit that many on-camera celebrities have developed the ability to give good performances even if they are often tapping into a pre-existing persona. It is a different skillset to only use your voice as opposed to appearing on-camera, but I have always thought that how this is spoken of makes it sound impossible for all but a select few like the late Robin Williams in groundbreaking performances like the Genie in Aladdin. And I don’t believe that is the case. I think voice acting is a broad range that can support different styles depending on the project, and that is not always “cartoon” acting where one is trading on an ability to do various exaggerated over-the-top accents and character types. Look at an actor like Kevin Conroy, who transitioned effectively from on-camera work because he gave psychological realism and weight to an iconic character like Batman. In both that and much of his other VA work, he is not doing “cartoon” acting, but finding the character within his natural speaking voice. Thus, an actor sounding “like themselves” can have its proper place depending on what the requirements of the story and character. While it is true that some actors have not appreciated this difference (such as Chris Rock infamously bragging that it was “easy” to play the zebra Marty in the Madagascar film series), I think we have come a long way from misbegotten projects like DreamWorks’ Shark Tale, where celebrities like Will Smith played pale imitations of themselves married to ugly-as-sin character designs.

-This may be a little off-topic, but I do think this has also improved things for diversity in its own way. The American voice acting scene has generally been majority white even for characters of color for much of its history, and this has often led to ugly burlesques and racial caricatures created with little regard for those characters’ actual lived experiences. Many have spoken of the difficulty of breaking into the industry because of these biases, as well as feeling typecast in “ethnic” roles rather than being allowed to explore a full range as an actor. (I will not get into the issue of POC actors themselves playing characters of different races, as I don’t think that is the same thing, nor do I feel qualified to speak on behalf of actors who do this) This has improved significantly in recent decades even if we still have a long way to go, and I think part of that can be attributed to not always relying on the primary voice acting talent pools. Take a film like Encanto, which has a mix of live-action celebrities with extensive VA experience (Stephanie Beatriz, John Leguizamo) and many Hispanic actors making their animation debuts like Jessica Darrow as Luisa. Because of this, there is a real authenticity to their performances that aids the cultural focus on Colombia in the film. I don’t know that you get that unless you think outside the box; indeed, Beatriz herself was considered for Luisa before the film crew met her and discovered she’s much more like Mirabel in real life compared to her other, more deadpan roles.

All of this is to say that ultimately, I’m just another guy with an opinion. If you don’t like Pratt or his casting as Mario, that’s your prerogative. I just like keeping an open mind, and we’ll see how things shake out next April.
