New review! The Frenemy Zone by Yolanda Wallace

Every once in awhile you need to read a book that hits the hardest places. Olly and Ariel take you on such a journey. This story reminds us all that not many LGBTQIA+ and people of colour have an easy or safe path to acceptance. Especially in certain areas of the US.
I did have more unexpected reactions to this book than I thought I would. The different storylines kept me on my toes. The romance was predictable but in the best of ways and the family dynamics were the heart of this tale.
Thank you to NetGalley an Bold Strokes Books for providing an eARC for an honest review.

Comrade Cowgirl
Tumblr media
Laramie's brother just got hurt and the medical bills for her family are gonna be really big. She has just recently gotten a job offer to go to a small town in Russia though and help a Russian cattle ranch become better and be run better than it has been being run. Laramie doesn't speak Russian and for the most part the Russian ranch hands don't speak too much English and so a translator is brought in as well. Enter Ana. She has quite the past and was an interesting character (as was Laramie). They grow closer, but, they're both in Russia where (as the characters keep saying) being gay is illegal, and so their relationship may be dead on arrival before it has even started. At the beginning I had a thought about where the plot could go on one specific point, and I just cracked up with happiness when I turned out to be right. It was awesome. The characters were all so unique and cool too. From Shorty to Vlad, and everyone in between. My only real problem with the novel was that some of the ending just seemed too pat and too easy for the characters (from an 'everything works out like a perfect puzzle' point of view). I just wish that the end here had been a little messier. But, overall it was a fun read and something new that I don't think I've read yet (anything mostly set in Russia). I received this book via Netgalley thanks to Bold Strokes Books.

I'm super excited to see that Tailor-Made by Yolanda Wallace has won the Lesbian Romance Lambda Literary Award! It is encouraging to see works by and about women of color getting the recognition they deserve (especially romance novels, a genre where there is still so little representation of people of color).
Two years ago I did a 30 minute podcast episode with Yolanda where she read from her book, 21 Questions. The interview delved into themes, representation, and inspiration in Yolanda’s writing. It was great getting a chance to talk with her.

2020 reading late round-up
i promised myself i’d read more last year and i did!  but i had no time to write this because 2021 has been too busy.  i read a book every 2 weeks last year and so far in 3 months i’ve only re-read 1 single book.  i meant to read more nonfiction but it’s almost all fiction lmao.  so much for reading theory.
34 finished, 37 attempts, 26 are Lesbian Interest, only 4 written by men.  so i had a very female and lesbian book year, but sadly very few were worth the read! i read a lot but i read a lot of absolute garbage! i can only recommend a paltry 6 books i read despite trying to read stuff i though i’d like.
highlighted “LI” stands for “lesbian interest,” as in, has a lesbian author or has lesbian/bisexual woman characters and themes.  some LI books have bisexual authors but les/bi f/f romance so they get counted.
100% WOULD RECOMMEND:
The Summer Book by Tove Jansson (LI) fiction
Land of Lost Borders by Kate Harris (LI) travel memoir
Aspen in Moonlight by Kelly Wacker (LI) romance
Sister of the Earth, ed Lorraine Anderson, nature anthology, didn’t finish yet but it’s really good
Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith, mystery
The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith, mystery
RECOMMENDED WITH RESERVATIONS
Painted Moon by Karin Kallmaker (LI) romance, beginning was wonderful ending was weird
Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward, fiction, depressing black intergenerational trauma
Grave Silence by Rose Beecham (LI) mystery, romance is disappointing but the protag was very authentically lesbian
Dear America by Jose Antonio Vargas, memoir, should have just been a long essay
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, fiction, too heterosexual and not enough nature but ending made up for it all.  goodforher.jpg
WOULD NOT RECOMMEND
The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith (LI) fiction, depressing and too many damn men
If Not, Winter: Sappho translated by Anne Carson (LI) poetry, i got nothing from this
The Whale Rider by Witi Ihimaera, fiction, movie is better/more female-forward
The Sealed Letter by Emma Donoghue (LI) fiction, terrible story but SO SO well written i flew through it
Desert of the Heart by Jane Rule (LI) romance, movie is way better and not steeped in depressing psychology
Of Witches by Janet Thompson, spirituality, not helpful or interesting
Poems by Rita Mae Brown (LI) bad bad poetry
The Weaver by Emmi Itäranta (LI) dystopia fiction, had potential but tedious
Evergreen Tidings from the Baumgartners by Gretchen Anthony (LI) family, boring and trite
The Left Hand of Justice by Jess Faraday (LI) romance, had potential but the author just fucking gave up towards the end
Uncharted by Robyn Nyx (LI) romance
The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water by Zen Cho (technically LI) fantasy, i cannot for the life of me understand why it was written other than to appease her publisher
Not Your Average Love Spell by Barbara Ann Wright (LI) fantasy romance, boring
Month of Sundays by Yolanda Wallace (LI) romance, boring
Comrade Cowgirl by Yolanda Wallace (LI) romance, okayish
Sequestered Hearts by Erin Dutton (LI) romance, boring
Fever by VK Powell (LI) romance, awful
Whispers in the Wind by Frankie J Jones (LI) romance, boring
Treasured Past by Linda Hill (LI) romance, boring
Claire of the Moon by Nicole Conn (LI) romance, pretentious
Racing Towards Providence by Laurel Mills (LI) romance, awfulboring
Real Love by Jeanne McCann (LI) godawful romance, racist
Alice Isn’t Dead by Joseph Fink (LI) HATED THIS
A Single Man by Christopher Isherwood, gay depressing fiction
SO BAD I COULDN’T FINISH IT
Venus Envy by Rita Mae Brown (LI) fiction, WHAT THE FUCK THIS WAS SO HOMOPHOBIC AND MISOGYNISTIC BROWN WAS REALLY SHOWING HER TRUE HOMOPHOBIC-BISEXUAL FEELINGS IN THIS SHIT
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, YA, style is impossible to read as an adult, either the author is very skilled or very bad at how juvenile this read

Just finished watching A League of their Own and am desperate for similar content. Do you have an wlw recs for historical women in sport? If not, I'll take wlw sport recs and wlw around wwii recs
Break Point by Yolanda Wallace! That's the only historical wlw sports romance I know, but you can find a whole lot more wlw sports romance by scrolling down here: https://lgbtqreads.com/romanceadult/by-tropearchetype/ and for wlw around WWII, try:
The Animals at Lockwood Manor by Jane Healey (1939, London)(Fantasy)
The Night Watch by Sarah Waters (1940s/WWII)
The Perfume Thief by Timothy Schaffert (WWII, Paris)
Fortune Favors the Dead by Stephen Spotswood (1945, NYC)
