Wei Wuxian sipped the wine Lan Zhan brought from Gusu in one of Jinlin Tai's many ostentatious peony gardens. He had found a branch in a ginkgo tree that was high enough that no one should see him at a glance where he still had a good view of the moon between the yellow leaves. It wasn't the worst way he could have spent his time at the Discussion Conference. Lan Zhan, for example, had to be xiandu. What could possibly be worse than that?
"Jin Ling, what's the matter now?"
Wei Wuxian rolled his eyes. Really, Jiang Cheng is such a wronged mother. He plays his part like a grand madam.
"Do you think Zizhen-ge is a better sect leader than I am?" Jin Ling hissed.
"What?" Wei Wuxian looked down. Through the branches, he could see Jiang Cheng's silver lotus guan glimmer with his head shake. "Where did you get that from? A-Ling, sit and explain."
"You complimented him in front of everyone," Jin Ling grumbled, but he flounced onto the bench.
Jiang Cheng folded himself gracefully, careful of the drape of his robes. "It's his first conference. All I did was walk him through presenting himself, like a junior should be treated."
"You liked his proposal."
"You like it, too, brat. Besides, a little support in the beginning keeps the old men at bay."
Jin Ling knocked his shoulder against Jiang Cheng's. "So it's not because you always wanted a poet for a nephew?"
Wei Wuxian couldn't see it, but he could imagine Jiang Cheng's face. But when Jiang Cheng spoke, it didn't match the tone he expected. Sad, but trying to joke. "After the poems Zixuan wrote?"
"A-Die wrote poems?"
Oh, oh, Wei Wuxian wanted to leave.
"Once he became enlightened, he was devout. 'Rain pearls on lotus leaves which bow gracefully/Thoughts of you collect and overwhelm me.' A-jie blushed for weeks." Jiang Cheng sighed. "The Jinlin Tai library should have them all somewhere. Please don't let Ouyang-gongzi read them."
Jin Ling huffed a laugh and threw his arm around Jiang Cheng's shoulder, which is when Wei Wuxian realized Jin Ling was taller and broader now. He hadn't seen them side by side in years. A light breeze stirred the gingko leaves and lifted the scent of peonies.
"Hanguang-jun didn't murder anyone with his eyes today," Jin Ling chirped. "Do you think he's starting to like politics?"
"Don't."
"Jiujiu..."
"He's the xiandu, Jin Ling. What do you think would happen if anyone overheard you disrespect him, especially while hosting the conference?"
Jin Ling groaned and threw his head back dramatically, jostling Jiang Cheng. Briefly, Wei Wuxian amused himself by imagining what Yu-furen would have made of her grandson. Then he gently slapped himself. "You're so boring, jiujiu! It's not like he respects either of us."
Jiang Cheng snapped, "I didn't realize you aspired to be so immature and irresponsible."
Immature? Irresponsible? Jiang Cheng had a lot of nerve! Wei Wuxian would tell him so, but then he would have to admit to hiding in a tree. Jiang Cheng would be so annoying about it, and Wei Wuxian really didn't want to bother!
"Aiya, jiujiu, if I can't complain to you about him, who can I? No one else sees what he's like."
Jiang Cheng leaned against Jin Ling, but then he ruined the picture by saying, "It's good that most people can't tell. If half of the sects ran to Zewu-jun with complaints about his beloved didi, he would leave seclusion before he was ready."
They were quiet for a few moments. Suddenly, Jin Ling burst out, "Do you really not care?"
Jiang Cheng paused. "About?"
"You know I spend time with—him!"
"You're sixteen, Jin Ling. Your memory should be good enough to remember every other time you've poked at this. And use his name; he doesn't actually appear every time you call."
"Wei-qianbei misses you!" Jin Ling grabbed Jiang Cheng's shoulders and started to gently shake him back and forth, but then Jiang Cheng pushed his hands away and stood.
"As you are clearly feeling better, I will leave first," Jiang Cheng hissed.
Jin Ling zipped in front of Jiang Cheng, blocking his path. "Jiujiu, I don't understand you at all! You want to talk to him, and he wants to talk to you. Why are you waiting?"
"He wants to talk to me so much that I learned about his elopement from gossiping disciples? He wants to talk to me so much that he lives in Cloud Recesses, which he hates? He wants to talk to me so much that he ignores Lan Wangji's hand on Bichen every time we meet?" With each question, Jiang Cheng prowled forward, and Jin Ling backed up.
"I don't think he hates Cloud Recesses..."
That's right; Wei Wuxian didn't. Lan Zhan was there, for one thing. And the juniors!
"That's because you don't fucking know him," Jiang Cheng snapped.
"Oh, and you do? When you won't even talk to him?"
"I was his assignment, Jin Ling. He either played with me or starved; he either trained to be the best or lost his position." Jiang Cheng laughed, dark and mean. "Not that I noticed."
"Jiujiu..."
"Let him live the life he wants, Jin Ling. Let me go to bed."

240301 Xiao Zhan Studio Weibo Update
His "Border • Boundary" (边 • 界), embarking upon the "train" for Milan, "circling" around for a few days. Experiencing: the fine drizzle and drifting dust of the city's scenery cleansed by the rain; Listening: to the blazing grand surging waves on the streets of another country; Recording: the sunset in the fading light of dusk, capturing a moment of tranquility for Xiao Zhan Walking: in the grand "circle" of this "world" (世界) With each passing moment, surpassing a new "border".
山不让尘, 川不辞盈 智行方圆, 曲中求直 (The closing phrase in the video)
山不让尘,川不辞盈 Mountains do not heed the dust which form them, Rivers do not retreat from the trickles that fill them
All great things come from all the small things that we accumulate, from a Jin dynasty poem by Zhang Hua (I've incorporated some of the preceding lines into the translation).
智行方圆, 曲中求直 Wisdom is in knowing the perimeters (more literal: square-circle) for the journey taken, Seek straightness within the curve
Have a clear goal and hold firmly to your principles in what you do, even in different settings, Adapt to the curveballs we encounter to find the straight path forward. (This last phrase actually comes from one of the principles in tai chi. In order to deliver a move, one must find the balance between moving through a circle and moving forward in a straight line; the principle of yin and yang is at the foundation of tai chi and is what is at the core of this phrase too.)

Early history of Linyi (LS54)
Up to c. 413 AD.
The state of 林邑, Middle Chinese *Lim-'ip, Vietnamese Lâm Ấp, Standard Chinese Línyì, was located in what is now central Vietnam.
The Liangshu account is quite close to the one in Jinshu but each have elements not found in the other.
The various states South of the Sea for the most part are located on islands in the great sea south and south-west of Jiao Province, the distance for those close is three to five thousand li, those distant twenty or thirty thousand li. The western ones are adjacent to the various states of the Western Region. Middle of Han's Yuanding era [116 – 111 BC], they dispatched the General who Humbles the Waves, Lu Bode, laid open the Hundred Yue, and set up Rinan commandery. The various states that were outside its borders from the reign of Emperor Wu and onwards all sent tribute to court. In the period of Emperor Huan of Later Han [r. 146 – 167 AD], Daqin and Tianzhu both made use of this route to dispatch envoys envoys with tribute to present. Reaching the time of Sun Quan of Wu [r. 222 – 252], he dispatched the Assistant Officer for Promulgating Reform Zhu Ying and the Central Gentleman Kang Tai to communicate with them. Those they passed through and those they heard accounts of amounted to a hundred and several tens states, and following that there was established records and accounts. During the Jin era communications with the Central States were perhaps rare, and for that reason were not conveyed to the history officials. Reaching Song an Qi, there were arrivals from more than ten states, and they started to make accounts about them. Since Liang's change in fortune, they who served the correct calendar, redress tributary responsibilities, and sail the seas to arrive annually, exceed those of previous eras. Now [I] gather their manners, customs as roughly put forth, and patch them together as an Account of South of the Sea as follows:
The state of Linyi [MC: Lim-'ip] was originally Han's Xianglin county in Rinan commandery, at the boundary of ancient Yuechang. The General who Humbles the Waves, Ma Yuan, opened up Han's southern border, and set up this county. Their land's length and breadth could be 600 li, the distance from their city to the sea 120 li, and the distance to Rinan's southern border more than 400 li. To the north it borders Jiude commandery. From their southern border on a route by water and by foot for more than 200 li there is a western state of barbarians who likewise claim to be kings. [There] Ma Yuan erected a pair of copper pillars to show the location of Han's border.
Their state have golden mountains where the rocks hall wave a reddish colour, and from their midst gold is produced. The gold flies out at night, in shape it is like the lights from fireflies. They also produce hawksbill turtle, shell teeth, jibei, and sinking wood incense. Jibei is the name of a tree. At time their flowers are complete, they are like goose down. They draw out their threads and spin them to make cloth. Pure white it does not differ from ramie cloth. They also dye it completely with five colours and weave it to make mottled cloth. Sinking wood, local people cut and chop it up, and store it for years. It rots and decays until the heartwood alone remains. If put into water, it sinks, and for that reason it is called sinking incense. Next is that which does not sink and does not float, it is called zhan棧 incense.
[This is the process of making agarwood incense which nowadays you apparently can buy on Amazon.]
At the end of Han there was great chaos. The Board of Merit officer Ou Da killed the county Prefect and installed himself as King. It was transmitted for several generations, but after that the King had no heir and he installed his sister-son Fan Xiong. Xiong died and his son Yi inherited. Emperor Cheng of Jin's 3rd Year of Xiankang [337 AD], Yi died, and the slave Wen usurped and was installed.
Wen was originally the family slave of barbarian leader from Xijuan county in Rinan, Fan Zhi. He often herded the cattle at the mountain brooks where he found a snakehead fish with two heads. It changed and turned into iron, and following that he used it to forge a sword.
When the forging was complete, Wen turned toward a rock and made a prayer, saying:
If when cut the rock breaks, Wen will be King in this state.
Following that, he raised his sword and cut the rock, it was like cutting hay or dry wood. Wen in his heart was singularly amazed with it. Fan Zhi often sent him to trade with merchants that reached Linyi. Following that he taught the King of Linyi to build palace houses and military chariots, implements and weapons. The King favoured and relied on him. Later he then slandered the King's various sons, and each fled to other states. When the King died without an heir, Wen pretended to the neighbouring to go and receive the King's sons. He put poison within their liquid to kill them. Thereupon he compelled the people of the state and installed himself. He raised troops to attack the nearby small states, all were swallowed up and extinguished by him. He had a multitude of forty or fifty thousand people.
At the time the Inspector of Jiao province, Jiang Zhuang, sent his intimates Han Ji and Xie Zhi to oversee Rinan commandery from beginning to end. Both were covetous and ruthless, and the various states were troubled by them. Emperor Mu's 3rd Year of Yonghe [347 AD], the palace dispatched Xiahou Lan as Grand Warden, his intrusions and cruelties were particularly extreme. Linyi previously had no farm land, and he coveted Rinan's land for being rich and well-watered. He had often wanted to seize and take possession of it. Arriving at this point, he took the opportunity of the people's anger, and thereupon raised troops to assault Rinan. He killed Lan and used his corpse as a sacrifice to Heaven. He remained in Rinan for three years, and then turned back to Linyi.
The Inspector of Jiao province, Zhu Fan, after that dispatched the Controller-Protector Liu Xiong to defend Rinan. Wen again slaughtered and wiped him out. He advanced to rob Jiude commandery, and injured and murdered the personnel and common people. He dispatched envoys to report it to Fan, and desired to use Heng Mountain on the northern border of Rinan as the boundary. Fan did not allow it, and again dispatched Controller-Protectors Tao Huan and Li Qu to chastise him. Wen returned to Linyi, but soon after again took station in Rinan.
5th Year [349 AD], Wen died and his son Fo was installed, he was still stationed in Rinan. The General who Conquers the West, Huan Wen, dispatched the Controller-Protector Teng Jun, and the Grand Warden of Jiuzhen, Guan Sui to lead the troops of Jiao and Guang provinces to chastise him. Fo fortified the city and firmly defended. Sui ordered Jun to with ample troops to the front while Sui led 700 sturdy soldiers to cross over the ramparts from the rear. Fu's multitudes scattered in surprise, and he ran and fled. Sui pursued until Linyi, and Fo then requested to submit. Beginning of Emperor Ai's Shengping era [357 – 361], he again began with robbing and violence. The Inspector, Wen Fangzhi, chastised and routed him.
Emperor An's 3rd Year of Long'an [399 AD], Fo's grandson Xuda again robbed Rinan and took the Grand Warden, Gui Yuan. He also advanced to rob Jiude and took the Grand Warden, Cao Bing. The Grand Warden of Jiaozhi, Du Yuan, dispatched Controller-Protector Deng Yi and others to strike and route him, and forthwith [the court] used Yuan as Inspector. 3rd Year of Yixi [407 AD], Xuda again robbed Rinan and killed the Senior Clerk. Yuan dispatched the Controller-Protector for Sea Patrols, Ruan Fei, to chastise and rout him. He behead and took prisoner a considerable multitude. 9th Year [413 AD], Xuda again robbed Jiuzhen. The Acting on Commandery Affairs Du Huiqi fought with him, and beheaded his King of Xijiaolong [?], Zhenzhi, his general Fan Jian, and others, captured alive Xuda's Xineng [?], and took prisoner more than a hundred people. After Yuan's passing, no year passing in which Linyi did not rob Rinan and Jiude commanderies. They killed and laid waste to extreme extent, and Jiao province thereupon became empty and weak.

I feel like on some level Wei Ying was sort of aware of his crush on Lan Zhan back in his first life, but because of constant rejections, homophobic society/ Jiang Cheng, Lan Zhan's reactions to the rabbits being male (read Lan Zhan finding being gay wrong), and comphet, he pushed his feelings way deep down and suppressed them somewhat. Not that's it canon but if you take into a account the audio drama extra where Wei Ying throws the peony at Lan Zhan and he's more than aware of meaning that says a lot too. That's probably why he realized his feelings so fast in his second life, but didn't want to make assumptions about Lan Zhan's.
I personally think that he knew somewhat of his feelings the second time Lan Zhan got drunk and he kissed him, but due to Lan Zhan's reaction he pushed his feelings down and tried to suppress them and not let himself be too hopeful. I think he meant every word he said to Jin Ling about Lan Zhan at Jinlin Tai, but seeing Lan Zhan stare at him, he felt guilty for liking Lan Zhan that way because he thinks Lan Zhan is straight and would possibly reject him. He doesn't want to lose his friendship with Lan Zhan so he pushes everything down acts like everything is fine so that way he can stay by his side (another reason him and Lan Zhan are so similar at their core). The chapter he wakes up in CR after being stabbed is called Inseparably in Love. I think that's the defining moment where Wei Ying can't lie to himself anymore that he is in love with Lan Zhan, because Lan Zhan stood by his side, but certain events make them take two steps forward, three steps back. The biggest moment of that is when they are hiding in the hay stack. He is so happy until the couple comes along and ruins it. They talk mad shit about him and then he can no longer look Lan Zhan in the eyes because maybe on some level he feels like Lan Zhan did hate him back then and maybe somewhat agrees with the couple is saying about back then even if he doesn't now. So he doesn't let himself hope too much with his domestic cottage core fantasy.
Anyway the biggest tell of Wei Ying being somewhat aware of his crush on Lan Zhan back in CR is the dream come true extra where he kind of admits it. "I'll admit it. All that was nonsense. Back then, I really wanted to play with you." "Rejecting me like that so coldly every single time-it really made me lose face, don't you know?" Even if his feelings were subconscious, they are not as subconscious as people like to think.
This was so beautifully written. I completely agree. It also made me want to reread the novel again because so many moments between Lan Zhan and Wei Wuxian are so sweet.
This is the audio drama chapter being referred to btw. This post also lists a few of the sweet moments between them that I see as further proof of WWX's feelings! I just get the sense that WWX realized early on that he'd met his match with Lan Wangji. In terms of talent and morality. Especially after LWJ punished himself alongside him.
I think a lot of the time Wei Wuxian just doesn't let himself think directly & fully about what he would like to have when he believes there's no way he will have it, or when he's clearly not getting it. In that manner he can remain grateful for what he gets instead of becoming resentful for not having more. So as he begins to trust LWJ more and more and grow closer and closer to him, and hope that LWJ might return his feelings, he can finally begin to open himself up to everything he was feeling for so long, look at it straight on, and say I really wanted to play with you.

If you’re still accepting prompts, I’m curious how much chaos qin su!wwx was able to subtly cause at jinlintai without being caught? bc i don’t think he could go that many months without doing Something to Someone lol
(brief author’s note: this au is entirely prompt-based, so please reblog if you can for future updates!)
Three months into his stay at the Jinlintai, Wei Wuxian discovers that he dislikes Su She even more than he dislikes his husband.
It’s not even that he falls all over himself doing Jin Guangyao’s bidding, because he doesn’t, he reflects, observing the two in conference at one of the Jin sect’s private banquets. Su She’s really loyal to him, and that’s even worse.
Before her death, Qin Su was almost certain that Su She had taken part in Jin Rusong’s murder, simply because Jin Guangyao could never have done the killing alone. She maintained that Jin Guangyao would not have been able to go to the guest kitchens, poison the plate intended for him, and visit He Su’s private quarters with time to spare; and Wei Wuxian agrees with her, if only because plotting the murder of a young sect heir in public would require a like-minded accomplice.
“Poor A-Song,” Wei Wuxian sighs, laying down his embroidery as his two handmaidens hurry to his elbow to comfort him with tea and snacks. “Yongpei, what will I do?”
“Nothing will bring our A-Song back,” the elder maidservant says, with tears already welling in her eyes at the mention of her mistress’s son. “But Mistress, just because it hasn’t worked in these last years, you mustn’t give up persuading the master to give you another baby! Mistress hasn’t said anything about it this last year, and A-Tai and I feared you’d lost hope--but Mistress, you are so pretty, and you love your husband so dearly, so how long can he resist favoring you even if he can’t bear the thought of losing a second child? Mistress gave Sect Leader a wonderful baby boy, it wasn’t any fault of yours that our xiao-gongzi passed away--and surely the same horrible tragedy can’t happen twice! You can’t give in, no matter what the master says about it.”
“A-Pei,” Wei Wuxian says gently, “this mistress is grateful for your faith, but in the end, I am A-Yao’s wife, and in matters such as these, I must respect his wishes. What kind of shameless woman would I be if I forced my husband to my bed, when I know he wants nothing less than to have another child with me?”
“A woman should have a child!” Shao Tai cries. “Mistress, it’s not the same at all! When Sect Leader first stopped favoring you, you never said a word, and it was all right before we lost A-Song--Mistress only wanted to be a good mother to her baby, and obey Sect Leader faithfully in all things! But now, even though it’s been more than ten years since xiao-gongzi died, he still...”
“Do you really think it’s unkind of him?” Wei Wuxian murmurs, glancing down at his half-embroidered handkerchiefs and pretending to blink back a few tears of his own. “He says he’s afraid for my health, but...”
“Yes, he is being unkind! Mistress shouldn’t be afraid to ask for what she wants!”
Wei Wuxian chews on his lip for a moment. “Do A-Pei and A-Tai really think I should go ahead with this?”
The two women both nod forcefully, setting the tea and cakes down on the desk so that they can kneel by his feet. “You have served Sect Leader without a word of complaint all this time, so why shouldn’t he grant you this one wish?” Yongpei says. “Mistress, if you leave it to us, we will see to all the preparations!”
A-Tai gives a timid cough. “But jiejie, if Mistress acts too suddenly, won’t he be suspicious?”
“Well, what else is she supposed to do?”
“No more of that,” Wei Wuxian scolds, barely keeping his lips from twitching as he finally thinks of another way to approach his plans to escape the Jinlintai by seducing Jin Guangyao. “Yongpei, A-Tai, you know this mistress of yours is a skilled cook?”
For once, Wei Wuxian isn’t actually pretending; he is a good cook, having learned the art at Jiang Yanli’s knee, even if he ruins all his dishes at the last moment by pouring chili oil into them. “Yes,” A-Tai replies, clearly confused. “Do you want to cook for your husband, my lady?”
“Not for my husband,” he smiles, brightening up like a summer sun cresting the horizon at daybreak as he looks at his fine-featured reflection in the mirror. “I’ve cooked for us often, so doing it again won’t mean anything much. But he has a dinner with Su-zongzhu and Zhang-zongzhu scheduled for the end of next week, so I’ll tell him I mean to cook all the dishes myself.”
“But, Mistress...!”
“Nonsense. I’ve made up my mind, and that’s what I’m going to do,” Wei Wuxian says briskly, putting away his embroidery needles. “And you two ought to get to bed, you know. It’s nearly eleven o’clock!”
It goes without saying that Wei Wuxian has no interest whatsoever in cooking for any of Jin Guangyao’s associates.
However, he does have access to a small store of hot Yunmeng spices laid aside for Jin Guangyao’s personal use, and he knows well enough that Jin Guangyao likes them--and that Su She, whose clan is native to Lan Zhan’s Suzhou, will not be able to tolerate so much as a speck of it.
(The plan goes off without a hitch, and Su She’s mouth and stomach fare so badly after eating a dish Wei Wuxian swore was meant for his husband that he has to take three rest days in the guest house to recover.)
__
“No way!” Jin Zixuan crows delightedly, as Wei Wuxian finishes narrating Su She’s unfortunate encounter with the mighty trifecta of Sichuan peppercorns, horseradish, and the spiciest chillies that Lanling gold could buy. “I wish I’d been there to see it. Who knew you could be so sneaky, Wei Wuxian?”
“It had a greater purpose,” Wei Wuxian shrugs. “I didn’t just do it for fun. I had to keep making overtures to Jin Guangyao so that he wouldn’t have any choice but to send me away when I finally tried to seduce him.”
On the other side of the campfire, Lan Zhan goes still. “Seduce?”
“Yes, of course. How else did you think that Jin-furen, wife to a zongzhu and xiandu all at once, could ever manage to get away from the Jinlintai without her husband noticing? He tried for months to placate me when I cooked him dinner and dressed in the colors he liked and proposed building a temple in Meng-furen and A-Song’s names, and then I finally had my handmaidens prepare me to receive him in my chambers and gave him the fright of his life. Smart, don’t you think?”
Lan Zhan’s face pales. “You ought not to have taken such measures,” he says hoarsely. “What if something had happened to you?”
“I’m his wife,” Wei Wuxian replies, bemused. “What could possibly have happened to me? Everyone thinks Qin Su must be barren, so no one would even try bumping me off to make sure Jin Guangyao could never have another heir. And he does care about her, you know.”
In answer, Lan Zhan only lets out a small scoff and turns his back to the fire, facing out into the night while Wei Wuxian and Jin Zixuan exchange puzzled glances over his head. “Rest, both of you,” he says quietly. “We will have to ride on towards Yunmeng in the morning, just in case that courtesan Mo-gongzi mentioned in his letter might be there.”
And then, as the three of them have done for the last month’s worth of nights they spent traveling together, Lan Zhan drifts off to sleep first, and Jin Zixuan and Wei Wuxian follow into a mist of uneasy dreams.

If you’re observant, you would have noticed that there are multiple “conferences/symposiums” that occur throughout the novel.  Some major events do occur at these conferences (ie. the archery contest, Xueyang’s judgement, Wei Wuxian going to Jinling Tower under the disguise of Mo Xuanyu).  But what were they for exactly? (lol yes they do exist in history)
Transcript below the cut:
Everybody has noticed that the term “Qingtan Hui” has appeared many times. Qingtan Hui did exist in China’s history.
The word “Qingtan” means a “dignified and elegant conversation”.  This was a popular social event of the influential people during the Wei and Jin dynasty.  This event was only fo the educated.  Those of a less prestigious background were not invited.
The Qingtan Hui could either be held in the scenic outdoors or in a participant’s mansion.  The timing of the Qingtan Hui was flexible and could be held regardless of day or night.  It was similar to a modern debate or a talk show. The topics would range from philosophy to Buddhism teachings.  It was a test of a person’s eloquence and knowledge. The atmosphere was lively, similar to a modern high society social gathering.
Xi Kang of the “Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove” and Weijie, who was killed for being good looking were experts at Qingtan.  The most famous QIngtan Hui was the Orchid Pavilion Gathering.  This was the first event held by the “Book Sage” Wang Xizhi.  The events of this QIngtan Hui were recorded in the Lantingji Xu.  The initial discussions in the Qingtan Hui were more factual and subsequently became more theoretical.
In CQL, when Wei Ying was absent for 16 years, Lan Zhan didn’t attend the Qingtan Hui. After Wei Ying’s return, Lan Zhan started attending again, ascending Jinling Tai once again.

The Water Classic: Part 2
[This is the core Classic only, i.e. without the Commentary, however the headings, SJZ01, SJZ02, etc., indicates the corresponding scrolls within the much longer Commentary on the Water Classic.]
[The maps are primarily intended to illustrate the Classic. Place names have as far as possible been placed in accordance with the Historic Atlas of China, and the rivers drawn as straight lines between their closest vicinity to each place. The Classic is not error-free, as is made clear in the Commentary. Unless noted otherwise, discrepancies between the Atlas and the Classic have been resolved in favour of the Atlas. Cities, mountains, rivers and other features not in the Atlas have been placed by me to fit the description in the Classic.]
[The Ji River is interesting as a once quite important river that no longer exists.]
Tumblr media
Dongguo River洞過水 sets out from a mountain north of Zhan County沾縣, goes west to pass south of Yuci County榆次縣, again west to arrive south of Jinyang County晉陽縣, and to the west enters the Fen汾, making a mouth below the Jin River晉水[?].
Jin River晉水 sets out from Xuanweng懸甕山 west of Jinyang County晉陽縣, again goes south to pass south of that county, and to the east enters into Fen River汾水.
[During Western Zhou, Xie of Tang, a grandson of King Wu, relocated his capital to the north bank of the Jin river, and became known as the Marquis of Jin.]

[According to the Commentary, the river described above was actually named the Qu River湨水, while the Zhan湛 was a different, smaller river that entered the He near Deng鄧.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ji River濟水 sets out from Wangwu Mountain王屋山 east of Hedong's河東 Yuan County垣縣 as the Yan River沇水, again east it arrives north-west of Wen County溫縣 and becomes the Ji River濟水. Again it goes east to pass north of that county, bends from the county to flow south-east, passing west of Tui City隤城, again south to the north of Gong County鞏縣, it to the south enters the He河. SJZ08
Again east it arrives west of Chengshi County乘氏縣, and divides to become two.
[The Ji River as a branch of the He no longer exists due to changes in the river courses in the centuries since the Classic was written.]
Tumblr media
One of the rivers flows south-east, one of the rivers flows north-east from the county, and enters Juye Marsh鉅野澤. Again it goes north-east to pass south of Anmin Precinct安民亭 on the western boundaries of Shouzhang County壽張縣, Wen River 汶水 comes from the north east to pour into it, again north to pass west of Xuchang County須昌縣, again north to pass west of Gucheng County穀城縣, again north to pass east of Linyi County臨邑縣, again north-east to pass north of Lu County盧縣, again north-east to pass north of Tai County臺縣, again north-east to pass south of Jian County菅縣, again east to pass north of Liangzou County梁鄒縣, again north-east to pass south of Linji County臨濟縣, again north-east to pass west of Li County利縣, again north-east to pass Jiaxia Town甲下邑, and enters the He河.
