Summary:

Shaoju "Sun Wukong vs. Red Boy" is adapted from the story of the classic novel "Journey to the West". It was originally a play in the full version of Shaoju "Journey to the West". It was previously edited and performed by Qilingtong and Liulingtong. In 1979, famous Zhejiang playwrights Gu Xidong, Shuang Ge, Bei Geng and others adapted the old version and put it on stage again by the Zhejiang Shaoju Troupe. It has been performed more than a thousand times and has won praise from the audience and drama colleagues.

Plot summary: Tang Monk and his disciples went west to obtain Buddhist scriptures and were blocked by the 800-mile Flame Mountain. Red Boy, the owner of the "Fire Cloud Cave", intercepted Tang Monk and his disciples with his trick of spitting out "Samadhi Divine Fire". Sun Wukong, who was sworn brothers with Red Boy's father, Bull Demon King, could not bear to hurt his life, so he used a clever trick to subdue Red Boy to the side of Guanyin Bodhisattva.

Sun Wukong is such a cool character across the board since if you genderbent the character - very little would change other than the reactions of those around them.

LMK: Same character. Only difference is brief confusion from MK and Tang, who adjust their pronouns when speaking of Dawn accordingly. Relationship with Macaque unchanged.

Hero is Back: Short red hair, chewing on hay, tall af? Thats half the butch farmers in my county. Liuer has a brief moment of "The Great Sage is a woman?" before going straight back to fanboying about how cool Dasheng is. Zhu Bajie is likely shocked and appalled that he was defeated by a woman - tho still shoots his shot. Attract does not work on Dasheng. Story accidentally becomes a tale of a mother sacrificing her life to protect her son, and ends with the son sacrificing himself to protect his new mother.

Reborn: Still a chaotic hissing gremlin of a monkey. Brief moment of funny where the very feminine Taoist acolytes misgender Smokey as male since she still looks the same. Zhu Bajie hesistates to hit on Smokey (despite her very convincingly diguising herself as his wife during his recruitment), since she terrifies him. Smokey still arises from their false death cloaked in blue flame and lava. And still mourns the loss of Fruitie.

NewGods: Bigger plot twist of Ace's identity. No one has figured out her identity for so long (including Ao Guang) cus they all assumed SWK was a guy. Still a giggling, gambling lush. Yunxiang: "Hey whos this drunken, half-dressed old lady offerring to train me in exchange for a motorbike- oh sweet Buddha she's the Monkey King."

1999/2000 Cartoon: Sugar is already femme af. No change.

Netflix: Little character change, though Cherry's story would indirectly become a glass ceiling situation with the Immortals. Men can become immortal by killing lots of evil demons (source: Erlang & Hou Yi), but women gotta suffer (source: Guanyin). Bonus girl bonding with Lin.

Stableboys headcannons:

-wukong used to be really skinny when he became a pilgrim because of not eating anything for centuries when ao lie knew he started always giving wukong fruits or any food who know wukong would like

-ao lie love when wukong brush/groom his hair it's a big sense of comfort to him so he sometimes let his hair get messy or dirty on purpose so wukong take care of it for him wukong know but doesn't comment on it

-wukong wasn't really comfortable with physically affection at first but he always wrapped his tail around ao lie arm because of how clumsy he is

-when they sleep together in the stables laying down on the hay ao lie humm for wukong some old songs he knows wukong think it's childish but it always helps him sleep

-even when they argue wukong can't bring himself to be mean to him because ao lie is way too good for him he can't bear making him sad zhu Bajie hate his obvious favoritism about that

-they have no sense of personal space with each other especially wukong he likes laying his head on ao lie lap and ao lie like leaning on him

You can definitely tell this is towards the end of Sha Hai era Wu Xie from the way he's meticulously setting traps and cataloguing the fingerprints of suspects. This is a man who has worked hard to wipe out an entire clan to keep Xiaoge safe

Zhu Bajie's First Wife

In JTTW chapter eight, Zhu Bajie tells Guanyin that he inherited his cave from a mysterious figure:

It's called the Mountain of the Blessed Mound," said the fiendish creature, "and there is a cave in it by the name of Cloudy Paths. There was a Second Elder Sister Egg originally in the cave. She saw that I knew something of the martial art and therefore asked me to be the head of the family, following the so-called practice of "standing backward in the door." After less than a year, she died, leaving me to enjoy the possession of her entire cave (Wu & Yu, 2012, vol. 1, p. 212). 叫做福陵山。山中有一洞，叫做雲棧洞。洞裡原有個卵二姐，他見我有些武藝，招我做了家長，又喚做倒蹅門。不上一年，他死了，將一洞的家當，盡歸我受用。

I'm surprised that I've forgotten this "Second Elder Sister Egg" (Luan erjie, 卵二姐) considering how many times that I've read JTTW.

Yu (Wu & Yu, 2012) confirms that Zhu and this figure were married, for the practice mentioned above is a "colloquialism of the Huai'an region, referring to a man living in the woman's house after marriage" (vol. 1, p. 517 n. 31). This means that Zhu had a wife prior to "Green Orchard" (Cui'lan, 翠蘭) from chapter 18.

I was interested in learning more about her and found this Baidu page. It mentions that the luan (卵, "egg") part of her name is actually a transcription error, for the original 1592 edition of JTTW shows a different but similar-looking character. I checked my own copy, and found that it reads Mao erjie (夘二姐, "Second Elder Sister Mao") (see the right side of page 105 here).

Like Baidu, Pleco notes that Mao is the fourth (of 12) earthly branches, which is associated with rabbits. Therefore, Zhu's first wife could have been a rabbit spirit. Can you imagine the kids? They would be a strange pig-rabbit hybrid, pretty much an aardvark.

The Baidu page also mentions that their pairing may be an allusion to yin-yang theory since the fourth earthly branch, Mao (夘/卯, rabbit), is associated with yin wood, while the 12th, Hai (亥, pig), is associated with yang wood (i.e. they complete each other). This kind of stuff is over my head, so I don't plan to delve into it further. But this page does give an overview of the stems and elements.

On a related note, if we were to apply this yin-yang/earthly branch dating approach to Wukong, his partner would be a chicken! This is because the ninth earthly branch, Shen (申, monkey) is yang metal, while the 10th, You (酉, chicken) is yin metal.
