I’d like to single out a particular piece of fanfiction to recommend.

If you’re into Cherik and Dadneto, I’d like to draw your attention to a fic that has my vote for the best X-Men: Apocalypse fix-it fic ever, and one of the greatest Cherik and Dadneto fics ever:

What if Erik came back of his own free will following the scene in the woods? What if he had reason to?

MY SUMMARY (with a few more details):

Magda is still killed in the woods but Nina survives. Erik and Nina flee Poland and seek refuge at the mansion, which leads to Erik fighting En Sabah Nur on the X-Men’s side from the getgo. After En Sabah Nur’s defeat, families are found and formed. Erik learns the truth about Peter. Nina meets and bonds with Charles, Peter, and Wanda. Charles fails to make a relationship with Moira work. Hank helps Raven find out whether Kurt is really her son. Erik’s children unknowingly help him and Charles realize their true feelings for one another. David Haller gets a new origin story as Cherik’s son. This has a happy ending.

REVIEW:

I included this fic in a recently-posted list of fic recs, but I wanted to single this out for praise because it’s the one and only version of the events of X-Men: Apocalypse that I accept within my mind - it’s so great that I like to imagine it as one of the infinite alternate universes.

This fic has some of the most incredible character and relationship development you’ll ever read. Charles, Erik, Nina, Peter, Wanda, Jean, Raven, Hank, Kurt, and Moira are all given moments to shine, and all of their many relationships are developed and explored in the most fun and most heartwarming ways. It’s honestly been an inspiration to me in my own writing endeavors.

My favorite thing about it is how it makes Nina an actual character. She is saved from the refrigerator and given the most lovable personality, and her thoughts, feelings, and powers are all explored and developed. A lot of focus is put on her close bond with her papa, as well as her journey in developing new relationships with the siblings she never knew she had and a new friendship with Jean. We get to see more of what makes her tick, and how her powers work. Her presence at the school basically allows everything to unfold the way we all wish it had, from Peter telling Erik the truth to the endgame Cherik. It also develops a beautiful stepfather-stepdaughter relationship between Charles and Nina that is downright soul-soothing to read.

This fic is basically 90% fluff, with many funny and heartwarming scenes where Nina and her siblings cause mischief, much to the adults’ exasperation, and Charles and Erik fall more and more in love. There’s a bit of angst with regard to Magda’s and Alex’s deaths, as well as Raven and Kurt’s struggle to deal with the truth about their relationship.

This fic also includes past Erik/Magda and a minor bit of Charles/Moira, which ultimately only serve as foundations for a slow-burn Cherik that is developed from the interpretation that they never acted on, or even realized their true feelings for each other prior to En Sabah Nur’s defeat. (Btw, this leads to a few scenes that will probably please Moira MacTaggert haters.)

There’s also some sweet Hank/Raven moments, and a few comical background hints of Ororo/Peter. Some fun Wanda & Peter one-on-one sibling moments, and an entertaining rivalry between Peter & Kurt. Plus some special cameo appearances by Lorna Dane and Piotr & Illyana Rasputin.

And in the latter half, there is a VERY unique new origin story given to the character we know as David Haller. It’s not technically mpreg - it’s way more wacky and creative than that.

(One possibly-controversial choice the fic makes is its depiction of the consequences of Charles’ mind meld with En Sabah Nur. Charles has absorbed some of the ancient mutant’s power and as a result, his spine is healed and he is able to walk again, and he begins to develop a few secondary powers that he didn’t have before. So I wouldn’t recommend this if you’re staunchly against fics that cure Charles’ disability - but I also hope you’ll still give this one a chance because it doesn’t put a ton of focus on the subject, it’s just mentioned a few times.)

I find myself turning to this fic often, whenever I’m in need of some good Cherik and Dadneto content. It single-handedly enabled me to carve out a space in my multiversal headcanons for Nina Górska to exist and thrive - despite my unending hatred for the actual Apocalypse movie. That’s no small feat, let me tell ya.

WaxRhapsodic doesn’t seem to go by that name on this site, if they’re on it at all. I haven’t found them on here yet - but wherever you are, bravo for creating a masterpiece!!!

I’d love for anyone who is already familiar with this fic to maybe leave me a few notes with their thoughts on it! I know I can’t possibly be the only fan of this work.

Does Fearless ever meet Dr. Victor Von Doom or Black Panther? Because aren’t they technically a politician to some extent. And I imagine that they are willing to share what they know about Cybertron to them, probably to Black Panther more than to Dr. Doom.

I can do separate interactions!

In the case of Doom...

Fearless has a bit more interactions with Doom than what they like. But its more for the sake of the bots than anything. Its a good idea to get a known super villain and a known technopath on your side.

There is a good chance that Doom does know of Fearless's lineage, but chooses not to speak of it. Its clear that they have and do not want anything to do with Magneto. Any 'team ups' are based on other goals. He can respect them for it.

Since Fearless is one of the few type of politicians that doesn't get on his nerves, integrity, respect, and brains he has given them a tour of his homeland. In exchange, the young liaison does show him some of Cybertron's technology. Its nothing that could be world ending though.

In the case of Black Panther...

One of the only other politicians that Fearless's doesn't mind being around. While King T'challa can be a bit stubborn, like Doom, he thinks of his people's well being before schemes. The two have mainly gotten into talking in respects to vibranium space crafts.

The chances of T'challa knowing Fearless's father are slim. They clearly do not like talking about their family and respects that. Even after reveal, he sees the young liason that helped him find some edible food in the building during his first meeting as official king of Wakanda.

Since Fearless has a bit more of a personal connection with the King, they have special access to enter Wakanda. They haven't used it too often, but if they are on Earth and hear that T'challa needs help, they are down to lend a hand. Shuri loves having Fearless around and see all the Cybertronian tech and designs with her brother.

I saw a video and it led to me writing a short little dadneto ficlet

Such little words and yet, they held such a big meaning that Erik was sure his heart would burst. 

Since his babies were big enough to stand, his favorite thing to do was cooking and baking with them. Even if they weren’t old enough to do much, even if they didn’t understand the recipes, it was fun. Memories were being made that he, and hopefully they, would have for the rest of their lives. 

He would watch with a smile as Pietro wasted flour all over the floor trying to add it to the bowl or Wanda overfilled the measuring cup with milk. Many eggs were lost and shells were gotten in their desserts, but that was okay. Erik could think of worse things to happen. 

The sight of his two little ones in their aprons mixing and pouring was more than enough to make up for any mess he had to clean up. No matter how big the mess, he never stopped them or suggested he done it instead. That would take away from the fun and memories. Besides, they salvaged what they could, using it anyway (if it was on the counter it was safe, if it made it to the floor it couldn’t, so Erik dedicated himself to making sure nothing hit the floor if he could help it). 

It was their special family time. With him being so busy, it was always something he made time for, no matter what, and the kids seemed to love it, laughing and giggling as they worked. 

The recipes meant something to Erik and, one day, he would share that with his children too. The stories of Erik in the kitchen with his mama before he lost her, what the recipes meant, the culture behind them and how far they had come through the generations. 

For now, though, it was just fun, bonding with his children.

Erik was getting the oven turned on and the pan they’d be needing out while the children stirred the batter in the bowl, standing on little stools to be tall enough to reach. It was a bit crowded with both of them working but Erik wasn’t going to try separating them. 

“Papa, help,” Pietro said, slinging his whisk through the air, trying to get some of the mix off of it and Erik stepped over to help his son. His hand wrapped around the little boys and gently guided the movements against the bowl to clean it off. 

The little boy looked up at Erik with a smile on his face, “Your my best friend, Papa,” He said and that was it. Those words. 

Erik couldn't think of a time that he had ever had a friend, let alone a best friend. And to hear that his son considered him his best friend was enough to bring tears to his eyes. He leaned down, pressing a kiss to the top of the boy’s head, hoping the tears would go unnoticed. 

“Me too, Papa! My best friend too!” Wanda exclaimed, bouncing on her step-stool, smiling brightly at him. 

If Erik wasn’t crying before, he certainly was after that. He made sure Pietro had the whisk from him and moved over to kiss Wanda’s cheek and gave his babies a hug, one arm around each. 

“You’re my best friends too,” He whispered, “And there’s no one else I would rather have.”

House of Dadneto WIP Checkpoint #1!

BELOVED i am requesting backstory for your FAVORITE dadneto fic you have ever written

AHHH MY BELOVED!! Thank you for giving me a chance to ramble about ✨them✨

But oh boy, picking a favourite story is so hard!! I supposed out of my finished works, ‘The Hardest Part is Leaving You’ would be one of my top picks!

As you know, that fic started as just little chunks of writing which showed how Peter added something to Erik’s house in Genosha every time he visited, but then of course I had to explain why Peter was visiting him which is how I came up with the idea for the government liaison! It was such a blast to write, and then as it kept going I reached a point where I realised there would have to be a reveal otherwise we’d all feel robbed of a happy ending 🤣

I remember those last two scenes (Erik finding out and Peter telling him) being the hardest parts to write. I’d never done a reveal at that point so it was a struggle trying to find the perfect way for it all to come together, and I’m so proud of how it turned out!

And of course, who could forget the iconic pun at the end that gives me life to this day 🤣

But you already knew all that beloved! So instead I’ll ramble a bit about the sequel I never ended up writing for the Genosha fic!

The idea was that it would be a Dark Phoenix fix it of sorts, with Jean’s Phoenix powers going out of control and the X-Men trying to capture her like in the movie. Peter would get severely injured in the fight though and a dismayed Erik would take him to Genosha to recover. The story was heavily focused around Peter’s relationship with Wanda and how much Jean reminded him of his twin, considering they both suffered from powers that were beyond their control. It was also about Erik’s struggle over trying to protect his son, and how he eventually had to forgive Jean and choose to help her despite the anger he felt over Peter’s near death.

In the end, Peter was going to be a key player in bringing Jean back to a stable place along with the other X-Men, and after spending many months with his father, ends up deciding to stay on Genosha permanently. He’d later set up a school in his sister’s name and adopt Mr Dibbles, making Erik a proud grandfather.

Most of the elements of this story have been repurposed for other upcoming fics in the Outsider POV, such as finding Mr Dibbles on Genosha, the Phoenix plot line in a Jean POV, and a reverse of Peter getting drawn to Genosha from a traumatic event in the Fabian POV. So though we will probably never see a sequel to the Genosha fic, the ideas will live on in other ones!!

AGHH this was awesome!! There are so many layers here and I adore every bit of it. The fam all being so shit at communicating how they really feel is so accurate haha, but I love how much they all care about each other deep down 🥺 Erik choosing to join the X-Men for his grandchildren is PEAK and the fact that’s not actually canon (yet 👀) is such a missed opportunity!!

And ooo, I’m so torn! I both love the ambiguity of the present and I’m also so damn curious what was originally planned to be in it, especially if it was very significant to Pietro! I think I’m going to have to cave and ask you what it was going to be 👀👀👀

Hi! I absolutely love your fic Misfortune, and I’d love to hear more about the universe surrounding it! I’ve always been curious about the dynamic that was hinted at with Erik, Pietro and Luna, from what we saw it seemed very nuanced!!

I'd really like to start by saying that I'm so glad Misfortune resonated with you! It's tied for my favorite work I did for House of Dadneto 2024, and I hope that if there's a 2025 event, I'll be able to live up to my work in 2024. I also want to say that I adore A Quiet and Starry Place and am excited for any upcoming chapters!

Within Misfortune, I tried to capture the idea of people's words, actions, and beliefs not completely coinciding. Whether it be Wanda claiming not to care about Erik outside his relationship with Pietro while still visiting him (albeit on the astral plane) or Erik denying that Luna's birth and humanity has any impact on him, while joining the X-Men for that very reason. I also tried to show the breakdown of communication within the family unit, and how that only leads to more pain.

When Pietro got married to Crystal, Erik wasn't there. He never truly got an answer as to why, though it was mainly due to Erik being a fugitive after his failed rebellion after the attempted assassination of Charles Xavier. Crystal's pregnancy was announced soon after the wedding, and Erik seemed to be excited at the prospect of being a grandfather again. He gets along with Crystal, although he only visits twice during the pregnancy so Pietro and Crystal don't get in trouble for meeting with a fugitive. Even though Crystal is royalty, he doesn't want to risk anything.

Pietro wants Erik to be proud of him, he wants to have a good relationship with him. To Pietro, having a relationship with Erik and considering him his father alongside Django is both possible and okay. He considers Django his father, and Erik as his father as well, one does not cancel out the other. Wanda has a harder time reconciling the two, so she uses Pietro as an excuse to get closer to Erik, as she doesn't want to betray Django, Marya or Magda. That's one of the reasons he still hasn't met Billy or Tommy. That and the fact Wanda's afraid they'll get hurt if anyone finds out about their relationship to Erik.

When Luna is born, and born human, Pietro is afraid.

He's heard what people say about his father, and seen the things his father has said and done when it comes to coexistence with humans. He doesn't think he'll harm Luna, but he thinks that he'll ignore her, and that he'll pretend that both she, and he, don't exist. Crystal encourages him to tell Erik about his doubts and fears, but he doesn't, he only tells him his daughter is born human.

Truthfully, Erik never considered this.

He figured she'd either be born mutant or inhuman, and either one was fine with him. But to be baseline? That wasn't a possibility.

Pietro waited to tell him until he was already holding Luna, but the second she was placed into his arms, Erik loved her. He saw his own eyes-the eyes of his son- staring back up at him, and blonde hair that's a perfect mix of that of her mother and of her father. She was perfect, and he'd do anything to make the world safer for her.

But then, Pietro fearfully told him she's human. Only a moment later he took her back, afraid of what Erik might say. While Erik's loved many humans, that's not what he's known for.

His granddaughter will grow up hearing all about how Magneto fought against the humans, and she'll think that he doesn't love her. He does love her, but at the same time, she's human. He can't really reconcile the idea of his granddaughter being a human. She just can't be, yet she is.

While he doesn't believe in the possibility of true human-mutant coexistence, he does believe in her; and making the world safer so that Tommy, Billy, and Luna Maximoff can grow up unafraid.

He couldn't live with himself if she was afraid of him. He can't live with himself while his son is afraid of him.

He would destroy the world at the drop of a hat, but he'd keep it safe for his grandchildren. Human and mutant alike. He'll try coexistence if only to make Luna happy. It doesn't mean he won't fight for mutants with the same vigor he always did, it just means he'll try to live alongside the humans and advocate for peace.

He'll try it, just as he'll keep his promise to an old friend.

So, he packs up his meager belongings, and joins the X-Men. Not only for Charles, but for his children and grandchildren too. Perhaps this way he can prove to his son, his granddaughter and even himself that he hasn't already damaged his relationships beyond repair. He remains aware that every move he makes is being monitored, not only by the UN, but by his son too.

When word reaches Pietro that his father has joined the X-Men and has been saving humans and mutants alike, he sends him a gift. A way to let him know he still loves his father, and wants to maintain their relationship. Because Erik hasn't talked through any of this with him, he doesn't know how his father feels about Luna, or if joining the X-Men has any correlation at all. A few days later, Wanda decides to visit Erik in the astral plane.

As for the gift, I have my own opinion on what's inside; but I worry that whatever answer I give won't live up to what the individual reader thinks is inside. If you want to know what I originally wrote to be in it before letting it be ambiguous, let me know, and I'll reveal it and it's significance to Pietro as a person.

I hope this in-depth examination of character motives makes sense, and thank you for reading this long! I've always found Magneto to be a very interesting character, so I knew I wanted to do a character study to open House of Dadneto. In fact, this was the third fic I wrote for the event, but the first I posted. I had already written Polaris and Acceleration, Tangential Speed and the Practicality of Fatherhood when I started planning out Misfortune!

I've also considered following more of the X-Men 97 plot through the lens of this AU, but I'm not sure if I'll end up doing it or not. I have plenty of ideas when it come to Episodes 3, 5, 8, 9 and 10.
