@orangerosebush's post here, with my comment and @fowlblue's tags today got me thinking.

Artemis Senior has been teaching his son matters of business from a young age. Not only was Artemis, at 11 years old, discussing stocks with his father, but Fowl Senior had been imparting his wisdom onto his son for years by that point, discussing the ever-increasing value of gold with him before tucking him into bed. Even outside of pure monetary value, Sr. had tried to go legitimate with his business dealings, leading Artemis to have a few legal ventures of his own.

We also see very early on in the books that Artemis has been regularly using Butler as a resource for his plots: bouncing ideas off him was apparently a fairly common tactic when he was scheming.

Both Artemis Senior and Butler are interested in (or at least, not opposed to) educating Artemis on the ways of their lifestyle(s). It would be Artemis Senior who would have taught his son the value of banks and safety deposit boxes and hidden safes but it was Butler who was actively working with Artemis to rob those safety deposit boxes.

In the same vein of breaking-and-entering, TLC also gives us the fun little moment where Butler hands Artemis his own lockpicks, to get into the workings of the bomb.

With one line we learn that Artemis knows how to pick locks, but does not have his own set of lockpicks. Butler, on the other hand, has both the tools and knowledge how to use them. Partnered with a brief mention in TTP of some the specific trades of those previously employed by Artemis Senior (including such things as crime lords, insider traders, and cat burglars), we can extrapolate that Artemis Senior would generally hire someone to pick a lock for him, rather than do so himself.

It's pretty logical to conclude then that Artemis learned big-picture management from his father, and day-to-day skillsets from his bodyguard.

Essentially, Artemis Senior taught Artemis how to run a criminal empire. Butler taught Artemis how to be a criminal.

#artemis fowl #artemis senior #domovoi butler #and this doesn't even get into the aliases butler has!#he clearly has a lot of his own but then Artemis ALSO gets some #'what's our cover' 'i thought Stephan Baskir and his uncle Constantin'#Artemis Sr put his own damn name on the boat he was using to get cola to russia #you know damn well *he* didn't encourage Arty to hide his identity #(i'm not getting into the needs of artemis to hide his identity due to being a child and wanting respect afforded an adult in these tags #that's a rant for a different time)#there's such a prevalent theme of a Fowl saying 'i want X' and their Butler saying 'i know a guy'#(like 80% of the time the Butler would be The Guy but there's that other 20% where having extra contacts would be helpful)#we see it when Artemis asks Butler to make certain arrangements for capturing Holly and then again getting the mirrored contacts #we see Butler arranging car rentals or drivers and apparently needing to do so quite frequently #yet in TTP Sr just says he'll casually take a limousine where he needs to go #it's probably such a huge part of the Fowl-Butler dynamic to have someone who can actually perform all the necessary minutiae of daily crim #or at least know how to or know someone who knows how to #aaaaand now i'm thinking of how the Butlers are essentially disposable #sure death is a thing but how many Butlers were imprisoned for the sake of saving their Fowl the same fate #if someone's gotta take the fall for a crime it might as well be the person who'd take a bullet for the other #once you've already agreed to be on the wrong side of the law and accepted that you may give up your life (physically) for someone #what's taking it a step further and agreeing to give up your life (metaphorically) by languishing in jail for 10-80 yrs

i have some news that i'm very excited about yet simultaneously terrified of sharing, but i really want to share it, so i am begging you to keep your opinions to yourself if you are going to invalidate my identity upon reading the post.

so, i had an (unrelated to gender) endocrinologist appointment today (basically it's the doctor i see for my diabetes but since she's an endo i figured i'd shoot my shot on this), and i worked up the courage to ask my doctor about going on estrogen, as i had my ovaries yeeted five years ago and stopped testosterone three years ago since it was making my dysphoria worse after a certain point. and she agreed to start me on a mid-level dose of estrogen!

i have had a hell of a journey to get to this point, trying to figure out how i'm comfy presenting and what my goals are with regard to transition, with some regrets and missteps along the way. for clarity, i'm cafab intersex and nonbinary. i identified as a binary trans man for years because i didn't know that dysphoric nonbinary people were a thing, and by the time i figured out i wasn't a dude, i had already legally changed my name and gender marker. the gender marker has been changed back to female to match my birth certificate since i'm no longer on testosterone so when i moved to a different state they had to go by my assigned sex at birth, and if they ever legalize marriage for people on the type of disability i'm on, i'll probably just change my first name and middle name when i change my last name to my fiance's. hopefully someday ohio gets an X marker for gender so i don't have to misgender myself on official paperwork.

i was on testosterone for seven years and while a lot of the changes were affirming, the big thing that bothered me was the body shape changes. i have never really wanted an inverted triangle body shape (not a judgment on anyone with that body shape, i just feel as if it's too overtly masculine for me to be comfortable having on myself), and seeing it in the mirror, watching my hips and ass seemingly disappear, made me incredibly uncomfortable. i wouldn't exactly describe it as dysphoria at first, but after a while, it did get to a point where i was dysphoric about it. i have always felt somewhat uneasy around men with broad shoulders and the inverted triangle body shape due to trauma (it makes me feel like they're going to hurt me since they look so strong), and seeing it in the mirror was extremely upsetting.

now, if i'm cafab, why do i need estrogen? well, first of all, by the time i was in my twenties, my ovaries were essentially non-functional due to the whole intersex thing. so at age twenty-two, i had a total hysterectomy where they took my entire internal reproductive system, including the ovaries, tubes, uterus, and cervix. i'm essentially a cafab eunuch. my body has basically no sex hormones in it anymore, because it is incapable of producing them in an amount that would have any effect on me.

anyway, i'll probably pick up my prescription on monday if my insurance doesn't pitch a fit over my chart still saying my sex is male since they changed it after i got my plumbing yeeted.

#tl;dr: i'm starting estrogen next week and im very excited about it #also if any of yall have questions about like...my experience being intersex or the full story of me figuring out my gender just ask #im trying to be a little more open about my identity and experiences these days #also like...some of my documents say male some say female turns out getting a legal gender change in wv is impossible on some things #so when i moved to ohio they went by my birth certificate for everything #and my birth certificate says female #which is nice now that i present femme in daily life for avoiding transphobia i guess #but i live in a really progressive town so like...i don't mind being visibly outside the perisexist cisnormative idea of gender #also it's funny cuz my old wv driver's license says male and my new ohio one says female #oh shit i wonder what they did about my being registered for the draft when it went back to female #cuz when i changed it to male i had to register for the draft #which is an exclusively male thing #not like it matters cuz im not only a conscientious objecter but also too disabled to qualify for the military #but still...wonder what they did about that #long post #personal

My sister gave me her old laptop last week, I immediately installed arch linux (btw I use arch) on it, and for the first time I'm using a tiling window manager (hyprland) and I fucking love it??? It's also so performant on that shitty old laptop. From taking literally 7 minutes to boot windows to like 15 seconds to boot into linux.

I'm enjoying tinkering around with it and already breaking my system once cause idc about it and wanted to see what would happen lmao. But damn how the hell do people use laptops for longer than like 15 minutes? My neck, back, wrists, and arms hurt. Yeesh.

#I think this will be my primary daily driver once win10 hits end of life next year #probably run a vm with windows within it for an old version of photoshop and a handful of games #nobody cares but I'm trying to stay up 30 mins so you get my night rambling

#like I’m sorry #I love my best friend so so so much and she’s perfect and kind and has gone above and beyond to be rational and to be there for me #and I get it she’s an autistic woman and has faced adversity and has had to go on medical leave and that’s hard #and I’m not being dismissive of her struggles #but it makes me so angry because her parents unconditionally love her and her siblings and have always made her feel that way #and has never worried about money as a kid #and yeah her relationship with her parents isn’t perfect of course #but she literally cannot understand domestic violence beyond just reading about it in a book #like she did everything she can to understand and relate #but sometimes I want to scream because I feel so alone #because no one in my life fucking understands why I’m the way I am #and I’ve been struggling the past two months really badly with coping #I’ve had to go to the doctor to ask about PTSD and not like the tik tok OWO kind #but the I was in a car crash as a kid with my dad as a drunk driver and I keep getting flashbacks in my daily life to being a small child #that are impacting by daily life and interactions #and like I feel so fucking alone #and to hear from my friends ‘your right this is horrible and toxic but lots of people go through this’ ISNT FUCKING HELPING #I don’t want to hear that it’s normal I want to feel fucking safe in my bedroom without my mother blowing up my phone or calling the cops #I am unwell and I’m so stressed and I’m so sick and I can’t cope with this and none of the therapists I’ve tried to find handle ptsd #especially not therapists of color #I’m angry and I’ve been getting worse over the past two months #and not that it matters but due to ^^^ reasons my birthday has always been insanely fucking bad for me #like depression watch bad. when I turned twenty I was vividly hallucinating while walking around campus for a week straight having #flashbacks in class and I had to be taken out of the auditorium because I was physically unwell and couldn’t stop crying and shaking #and I told my friend I didn’t want to celebrate I just wanted to sit on her couch and not be alone and she fucking ditched me #because an emergency with a different friend came up the night before #like I have a history of suicidal ideation traumatic flashbacks eating disorders and self harm and I’m asking you to be with me on a very #upsetting day and you call me the night before telling me we have to cancel because another friend is having a bigger crisis #and like you don’t even feel a little bad about it??#I’m just upset and scared and I’ve got a doctors appointment tomorrow and I’m not in reality right now and that’s scary

i do be paying 18$ a month for aflac accident insurance but the amount of freaks on the road with long covid lack of spacial awareness... small price to pay to know ill get a lump sum of 2k if anyone breaks my arm. and thats just for the inconvenience of broke arm.
