I'm not big at all in the fanfic writing scene (maybe in the Judgment fanfic scene), but I really just want to say that even if you don't think you're good at writing, it never hurts to write that fanfic you wish you saw out in the wild.

Even if you don't post it, it's good exercise if you want to write fanfics! I have a ton of things I've written that I never posted because I just don't love them enough to put out there. And even if you post it and look back at it later and cringe a little, that's okay because it means you've grown as a writer! Sometimes I look back at my first Judgment fic and I'm like man, this kinda blows, but at the same time, I'm proud of it. It helped me to get out what I wanted to, see what needed improving, and got the juices flowing for further writing. It's not perfect, and it's not even how I imagine the characters at this point, but it got me somewhere.

So if you've ever wanted to dip your cute lil' toesies into writing, I say go for it! Even if it's to get out that one thing that's been nagging at the back of your mind, just go for it. It's a fun hobby and actually some pretty damn good stress relief.

Also AO3 is gonna be down tomorrow, so for those who will be affected by it (I'll be fast asleep when it goes down, so I'm unbothered), it gives ya something to do. :)

In general, twitter cares more about looking good than being right, and because they value the AESTHETIC more than the reality, there is absolutely no amount of times that a creator can turn directly to the camera and say "I don't care about shipping and fanfiction is fine" and have it get through to them. Because saying they're uncomfortable with it and then harassing people who ship gives the AESTHETIC of a "pure" fandom fighting to "protect" their creators. And selling that look and feeling to yourself can honestly feel really good.

And even if you play your Warden as somebody who really really didn't want to become a warden and was forced into it during their origin prologue, by the time Duncan dies, maybe the Warden takes this as an opportunity to become their own leader. They no longer need to suck it up to Duncan or any other warden or the order in general. (If you play a circle mage, they are finally free and maybe they don't want to follow any person's leadership. ) They can carve their own path and by the end of the game they can earn significant respect, they might even become a little power hungry, who knows. It's up to you. In short The Warden's feelings about becoming a leader all depend on how you play it and imagine it. DAO allows a huge amount of freedom in this regard. Which is awesome. You have options to express both reluctance and excitement during every origin prologue and later on as well, after Ostagar. The game actually created a pretty genius story basis for the main character to end up in a situation where it makes sense for them to be leaders and to be allowed to make big decisions. And that is absolutely essential for an rpg like this. They allowed Alistair to exist as a character who can be there with the main character since the beginning and they go through this together but they wrote him a personality that makes it logical for him to not try to take leadership away. It would be actually waaaay more unlikeable if he started bossing around our character just because he was part of the order for a slightly longer time.

kind of surprised at how much people romance alistair when i feel like every warden (but especially cousland) has very good reason to resent him

that conversation when the party first arrive in lothering always bothered me. "i don't know where we should go. i dont want to lead" you are the SENIOR WARDEN, alistair, even after being recruited, the warden was kept in the dark about so many things. they weren't with the wardens long enough to learn about the dreams, or the shortened lifespan, or the loss of fertility, or anything. I know even alistair didn't know everything (a fundamental failure of the grey wardens, imo, how much they insist everything should be a secret) but he had six months at least. the warden had. a day.

secondly, its having all that responsibility thrust upon them, then having to comfort alistair through his grief when they have likely recently exoerienced their own loss (and, in the case of cousland, leave their parents to be murdered)

i kept seeing takes of how nobody cares about rook, they have to help everyone with their problems when no one will help with theirs, but that has always been the lot of the da protagonist, and i feel it most keenly with the hero of fereldan

Look Outside Ending Spoilers

(This game is still eating my brain, so here's another long textpost)

The Flawed Ritual ending is fairly ambiguous, as we don't know the exact mechanics of how mutation works, and that makes it very interesting to me. From the way the astronomers seem to mutate when they become afraid due to the wrong materials, and how you manage to keep your shit together in the Denial ending, it does seem like the mental state of the afflicted does play a part in their mental health post-transformation.

To my mind, this means that running into the bathroom to have a panic attack by himself was the worst possible thing Sam could have done. I believe this for two reasons:

Those already mutated, especially someone as collected as Helen, could have possibly kept him grounded to some degree. It was never going to be pleasant, but there's some possibility of keeping his personality intact if not surviving without a freshly traumatized mind. From there, he could get his bearings and the group could start working out their next moves for once the Visitor is gone. Running into the bathroom to stare into the mirror (which would visually spur on his freakout) was maybe the worst choice he could have made. This isn't to call Sam dumb, the poor guy is understandably freaking out and I don't know that I would do much better.

Secondly, more practically speaking - He's in the bathroom, and he's getting bigger. We have no idea where the mutation will actually end. What if he can't get out of the bathroom? What if he gets so big that his form has to either conform to the shape of the room or burst out through the walls? If you're already mutating, the best thing to do might just be to stay outside. I haven't seen anything that would suggest that people who've already seen the Visitor can be mutated further.

All that said, I do genuinely think that the other characters, once they get over their shock, would bang on the door to try and get him out and situated. At the very least, I believe that some of them would try and calm him down through the door. I don't have any reason to think that Sam transforming is necessarily a bad ending, plenty of people got mutated and came out of it really chill or even more helpful than they were before (the plumbing/water supply guy is a real MVP in that regard). Given time to adjust and depending on how you played your Sam, he might end up being a force for good in the same way he did in the Denial ending, just smaller.

Beyond my attempts to puzzle out the hows and whatnot, I also just think it would be very nice and thematic to have your strange and changed friends repay your kindness to them. You could have attacked or avoided a lot of them due to how they look or act, but instead you decided to take them in, feed them and befriend them. It would be really sweet if they decided to return the favor by helping you adjust to your new form.

A part of me wonders if it's because Hamilton made theatre mainstream and so there's theatre people who are only into the "cool" musicals and not the older or more "cringe" stuff, which is odd because all musicals and theatre are considered cringe to most peope

As someone who loves Cats but doesn't love musical theater as a whole it's very funny to see theater people™ shit on it. Oh, it has a barebones plot? It's silly? It's weirdly horny? It's difficult to immerse yourself in? It goes off on long plotless tangents for no reason? People like it for the music and dancing instead of the themes and airtight writing? Woah. How unusual and singular.

hmmm ok another chaos walking textpost i guess because i’m experiencing menthol ill ness but something ive been thinking about a lot is like. we talk a lot about characters that haunt the narrative right. but can we talk about objects that haunt the narrative please. can we talk about the knife. the KNIFE

like. what if you were a teenage boy and you have only ever known a fundamentalist patriarchal society based on horrific violence right. and then your gay dads are like actually we don’t want you living in this society and you need to run away. and so you’re sent away and the only tools you are given to navigate your new reality are your dead mother’s diary (a tool of love) and a knife (a tool of violence). but the thing is you can actually only make use of one of these tools because you are like jared 19 and you never fucking learned how to read (because you grew up in a fundamentalist death cult). so when you are faced with something that you don’t understand, that makes you afraid, what tool is going to be the one you choose? you choose the only thing you know. you choose the tool of violence. you choose the knife.

and almost immediately you realize that you chose wrong but it’s too late. and now the knife will haunt your narrative Forever. the knife will haunt your narrative to such an extent that it literally becomes your name. it becomes who you are. you are the Knife.

because the thing is that if you hadn’t grown up in a town that burned books and closed the school and forbade reading, you would have been able to read your mother’s diary and literally in the first entry you would have learned that the spackle were actually not dangerous and were even considered by some to be “sweet” so when you came across the spackle by the river you likely would not have chosen violence. you would have put down the knife. but instead you were raised in and brainwashed by a misogynistic fundamentalist death cult so you literally didn’t know how to choose anything else. and now it’s the thing that will define your entire story.

the knife of never letting go is right. you can never put the knife down. you can never let it go.
