What I wish I'd Known Before Art School

What made you decide to get into Dobermans, and what are your short, medium, and long term goals?

I’ve always had a fascination with the breed on and off since I first saw them as a child in Oliver & Company although strangely enough for the longest time I wanted a docked but uncropped red lol. About 9 years ago or so I was suffering through Supernatural for my best friend and we saw an episode where an absolutely stunning doberman bitch was portraying a character’s form as a witch’s familiar. As it turns out she’s well bred (and I now know her breeder IRL! She’s from around here - her littermate is now 13 still alive and kicking though has been ddx with cardio since 2018). That brought the doberman back at the front of my psyche. Eventually my professional care provider felt I’d benefit strongly from a service dog and I narrowed down to three breeds I was interested in and that from limited knowledge knew I had seen in service roles: Vizsla, Standard Poodle and Doberman. I ruled out the V and Poodle for differing reasons after more thorough research and felt the doberman was more and more an excellent fit. (Please note however that the doberman is inherently far from being a breed meant for everyone, and this holds true as an SD as well, they are not suitable to every handler’s needs, personality, disposition and experience. Dobermans happened to fit my needs perfectly relative to SD work and my needs/personality as a whole).

So 8 years ago I got involved with local breeders, went to dog shows, met many dogs and owners, helped out where I could. I became obsessed with the breed again this time fully giving into my fascination I’d always had with them. 7 years ago I got my first doberman and it changed my life in ways I can hardly verbalize. I had no intentions of breeding or getting into breeding when I got her but the more things we did together, the more I understood what a truly extraordinary breed this is and what an exceptional dog she was in her own right. The state of the breed concerned me in terms of health and longevity and I wanted to make a modest contribution to help preserve it. Furthermore the bond I experienced with Nadia, that working relationship with an animal that wants nothing more than to work with you, the hours spent together training bringing me such JOY. I wanted other people to experience that. I wanted future generations to know what it is like to have a relationship with this kind of dog, with the doberman. For goals I’ll elaborate in another post!

This blog is run by Jamie, 21m (@coseyjame) and Max, 20m (@meafloaf). We're fiancés from Newcastle, NSW, Australia (but originally from QLD and VIC). We camp in our AWD Ford Territory that we've decked out in honour of the greatest road trip movie of all time, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. One day we hope to use all our sick days at once and venture all the way to Alice Springs in this thing.

During our travels, we will be doing the standard review thing, along with asking questions queer people might ask when travelling, such as:

Will I be yelled at in the street if I look gay/hold my loved one's hand?

Are the toilets in the venue/site trans friendly?

And perhaps most importantly: where do I get a fruity cocktail?
