(I have an ad blocker- I don't NEED to pay tumblr). I paid for ad-free browsing because I want to support the site which I have made my on-line home for over 10 years. they made some positive changes this past year--until August I was hopeful...
Then they blocked my access with a Clown on my dash. An AD! Advertising a TV show during an actors/writers Strike...
so I wrote an official complaint- demanding a refund of my Ad-Free subscription:

hullo- i have an active paid subscription to Ad Free Browsing. last week for several days - a large ad (for a netflix show??!) was placed OVER the right side of my dash and account info. I could not access the "next" button to move through my previous dashboard pages. additionally- the ad was visually Disturbing, and clicking it by accident caused changes to my dash that I did not want or ask for. I'm visually impaired and These changes to the background made it impossible to use the site. I had to use an external browser extension to find and disable this element. DESPITE HAVING PAID YOU TO NOT SEE ADS. THIS is unacceptable. I would like a refund of my ad free subscription.
This is the official message:
Hey there,
Thanks for reaching out and sharing your feedback.
What you're seeing is a Tumblr takeover in partnership with Netflix's One Piece. An Ad-Free subscription doesn't prevent you from seeing occasional Tumblr takeovers or other special editorial content. There is some more infomation about this here under the section "Promotional Content":
https://help.tumblr.com/hc/en-us/articles/4418605293975-Ad-Free-Browsing#promotional-content
The One Piece takeover is wrapping up soon, so you should soon see your dashboard return to normal.
We've always been up front about Ad-Free excluding Tumblr takeovers and editorial content, so this wouldn't constitute a breech of any agreement, and we're not able to offer any pro-rated refunds on annual Ad-Free subscriptions. However, we appreciate you sharing your feedback with us, and we're taking the feedback received during this promotion into consideration to help inform our decisions about how Ad-Free should work in the future. So we really appreciate you reaching out and sharing your thoughts!
I hope you have a nice week, and thanks for being a part of Tumblr.
Hey maybe a group of creatives deciding that they want control over their content and don't want to waste time and resources begging for ad revenue is like. A good thing
What??? Why can’t I keep what I’ve got and not have to pay more for extras I won’t use? I don’t want to blaze anything! I don’t go over the limits for posting, queuing or liking! I bought Ad-Free because I wanted to get rid of the ads and support a website I liked using. Now I have to go back to seeing ads and stop my support! This isn’t what I want at all!
@support @staff this is a really, really, really bad idea!!! Please walk it back or you will lose this subscriber. Just let me keep the plan I have! Don’t try to gouge more money out of me for the same service (I will not use the extras!) or you will not get any more money from me at all.
if you hate the new dashboard layout and find it unusable, and/or hate Tumblr Live and want it gone forever
CANCEL YOUR AD-FREE SUBSCRIPTION RIGHT NOW
and send Tumblr Support a POLITE message telling them you have done so and why.
The ONLY chance of getting Tumblr execs to pay attention to existing user feedback rather than whatever the marketing department is telling them about new users, is to hit them in the wallet.
You'll still get the remaining time on your subscription before they start shoving ads down your throat, and if they haven't fixed shit by then, there's always adblockers.
This is the wording I used:
Hi Support,
I have just canceled my ad-free subscription due to the unusuable dashboard layout and the inability to permanently disable/remove Tumblr Live. In addition, I will no longer purchase merchandise or gifts. I am not willing to give money to a company which has made clear that it does not care about or listen to its userbase, especially the loyal ones who've been around for a decade or more.
If Tumblr reverts the layout changes or otherwise makes the dashboard usable again, AND provides the ability to permanently disable Tumblr Live (both at no cost to users), I will reconsider my decision.
Tumblr has made clear they only care about money. Let's speak their language.
I recently bought one of the 'support tumblr medal badges' and was surprised to learn that that didn't include ad-free browsing, as most other social media sites consider supporting their site synonymous with not seeing ads. Are there plans to combine these offerings in the future?
Answer: Hey there, @improbabledreams900.
We would love to say more here, but all we can say is that yes—we’re looking into it. 😉
Stay tuned to the usual channels, folks! There’ll be news here or at @changes—and sooner rather than later, hopefully.
I'm not leaving tumblr (yet?) but wanted to make a more formal post about where else you can find me.
-> Pillowfort (I have invites I can send out if you want one!)
-> Bluesky
-> Instagram
-> AO3 (Go subscribe, as I don't know if I'll be posting snippets/promos on here anymore)
Or alternatively, check out my carrd, all my socials/connections are listed there, and it will act as my new masterlist (so long as I remember to update it lol)
i want to rewatch mythic quest but the free site i watch stuff on doesnt have that covid episode or everlight and its very upsetting . mostly the lack of everlight its like the best episode of s1 like i get to see danny pudi swing a sword around and turn into an evil demon creature . awesome shit man
add '##div.FZkjV:nth-of-type(3)' and '##.gLEjz' into ublock origin's element picker mode to get rid of the tumblr premium ads if you just got them (like i did). you're welcome.
almost $20 to have youtube premium on ios at least... just for no ads, as many of the other features like video downloads or now having your phone screen off and videos will continue to play, I don't use.
I used to use that all the time when I'd go to the park, I'd listen to youtube videos and music. and before paying for youtube premium subscription, i just left my phone unlocked and on youtube...
could have my phone open once again if I resume that, or download more game soundtracks and put it on my mp3 player.
do people still use those?
but youtube is a much better repository of music and my mp3 player lacks room...
is putting up with the ads worth it? leaving my phone open?
I genuinely hate that I can't make up my mind with this particular question.... I got used to no ads cause it's been years since I purchased it, got used to it, and only now am i like "is it worth it?"
I'd say no because I don't use many of the features anymore~~~ and never used downloads to begin with.
time to start putting up with ads again; subscription expires tomorrow and i feel it's not worth it to have it anymore.
but I stupidly keep subscribing again~~~
me doing constant back and forth drives me mad and I wish I'd stick to not having it for the long term. put up with ads again while listening to long form videos or music.
but sibling recently paid for it too as ads are getting so bad apparently....
It's not a life or death situation surely, but the constant back and forth and not knowing what to do personally drives me mad.
are ads worth tolerating anymore? I haven't dealt with them in forever, are they really that bad now?
is the $20 worth simply for no ads worth it if I don't use any other features? I'd say no and should probably learn to tolerate them again
