Video Accessibility Guidelines

Making Your Videos Accessible: A Step-by-Step Guide
Video content has grown into the most popular form of content available online. It does not matter if you have an educational institution, a banking app, a school, or a blog post. Videos are the most consumed form of content. Unfortunately, 15% of the world’s population finds accessing and consuming the content challenging. And it is because of their disabilities. This is why video creators should create accessible videos to level the playing field and let all their visitors access their online media. Follow Video Accessibility Guidelines for an inclusive online presence.
How can we make videos accessible?
Multiple things can be done, like the right video players, adding captions, and using the right colors and fonts. This needs time and effort; if you need help, we at ADA Site Compliance can help. We are the #1 source for all ADA website compliance issues and can make your video accessible to all users. We have a team of accessibility experts on hand to check the video’s dialogue for accessibility and perform the appropriate measures to ensure compliance.
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) was first published in 1999 to make web content available to users with disabilities. It was published by the World Web Consortium, and complying with WCAG 2.0 guidelines ensures governmental organization websites and media are accessible and compliant.
Who Benefits from Accessible Videos?
In addition to users with disabilities, other users may prefer watching the video without sound, like while in the library or at night when children are asleep. In this case, accessible videos with captions make a better choice for them.
Checklist to Create Accessible Video Content
Videos everyone can access can go a long way to getting people to view your fantastic content. It expands the reach of your content as the message is conveyed through images, sound, speech, and words on the screen.
The following tips are based on the WCAG and help ensure people with visual, hearing, or cognitive disabilities connect with your content.
1. Media alternative transcript
These are text transcripts describing what is displayed in the video displayed with the speech. Thus, blind users or those with visual loss can easily see alt text and access the video using screen readers.
2. Standard and Extended Audio Descriptions
Standard audio description is an audio description of the visual elements of a video created for the benefit of users with vision loss. Its voice track is written and recorded to fit the gaps between the existing dialogues and audio elements. A voice artist will record, or you can generate a synthetic voice of the final audio description. Extended audio descriptions are used in cases where the video does not have enough natural gaps within the soft track. The video is edited to pause at certain points to accommodate the secondary audio track description and ends up increasing the length of the final video.
3. Use an accessible media player
It is not just the content of video recording that has to be accessible for web accessibility. It also requires that the right accessible video player is used to relay the video content.
4. Adding Captions to Your Social Media Videos
Adding captions to your social media videos increases its web accessibility by:
Communicating your message better as words run with the speaker makes it easier for silent scrollers to enjoy your valuable content.
Making content accessible to everyone, even the hearing-impaired, as they can access the video.
Making content more engaging through moving captions to increase consumer interaction and attention.
5. Remove Autoplay From Videos
Autoplay can be distracting and even an obstacle to people with disabilities. They find it challenging and distracting to read the page with video playing while reading. Besides, the risk of videos hurting people with seizures makes auto video-playing a threat. This can be prevented by ensuring the video is played only when clicked.
6. Make High-Quality Audio
The video and audio must go in sync with your video. Quality voiceovers and a pleasant audio experience are important for accessibility and an overall user experience. Besides, WCAG requires reduced background music to cater to users with hearing or cognitive difficulties.
7. Closed Transcripts and Captions
Your video and audio content should include a caption file relating to every spoken message and non-speech sound. This means the captions should include song descriptions and indicate the tone while speaking, too. It is also always better to provide transcript documents for easy access by users with disabilities.
8. Don’t Forget an Audio Description or Voiceover
Your audio description can be compared to a podcast serving the same purpose. It delivers information without the viewer needing to visualize any information. Audio descriptions are better than transcripts for blind users or the visually impaired. Adding audio or video recording to descriptions may seem uncomfortable to some but becomes second nature once done.
9. Choose and Use the Right Video Colors
With about 7% of Americans having color vision deficiencies, the wrong color choices may lead to them not enjoying your artwork. Users suffering from color blindness find distinguishing between blue and red challenging. It is impossible to rebrand to eliminate colors, but avoid mixing red, blue, and green while creating relevant or meaningful videos. Using contrast-checking tools helps ensure you use the perfect text combinations for those with color vision to access important visual details in your content.
10. Mindfulness in Video Design
The accessibility of your visual content also depends a lot on its design. The wrong choice, like an overly busy video, can make it difficult for users with disabilities to access your video. On the contrary, there are some steps to adopt to ensure your video is design-friendly to cater to your entire audience:
Avoid placing text in places where closed captions will be placed. Too much text clutters the screen, making it challenging for those requiring closed captions. So remember where closed captions will appear before placing that text and place it accordingly.
Avoid having quick transactions or successive bright flashes in videos. It ensures your videos are safe for users with photo sensitivities and prevents possible epileptic seizures. Besides, avoiding flashing also helps users with autism, ADHD, and those recovering from a concussion.
Choose and use the right colors.
Including representations in content like casting or including disabled people or animated characters also helps. While it may not directly increase your video accessibility, disabled users enjoy seeing their representations in the message.
While these are easy and minute changes to implement, they make a lot of difference in your video accessibility.
11. Open, Closed, and Auto Captions and Subtitles
These terms are often used interchangeably and are minimally different. Subtitles display dialogues in a language different from what is spoken in the video. Open captions are found in the video, and are impossible to disable or remove. Closed captions can be activated or switched off if need be.
12. Include Video Descriptions on Social Media
Users with impairments read your content easily through a detailed breakdown of your shared video. The visually impaired people can easily read the video descriptions with the help of screen reading software. Just be very clear and thorough about everything in your content while writing a detailed video description. And remember that video descriptions vary on each social media platform. For example, Facebook includes videos in its description page, while Twitter requires you to enable video descriptions in options.
Conclusion
Many people have inaccessible social media videos mainly because of a lack of awareness. And those who do know about web accessibility do not do it because of the time and effort needed. Put some additional time and effort into creating accessible video content. However, it is well worth it because it avoids an accessibility lawsuit. Besides, if you do not have the time or do not know how to make your videos accessible, we can help. We at ADA Site Compliance are your #1 source for all ADA video compliance issues and can make your videos accessible to all users. Our team of accessibility experts is always at hand to check the accessibility and perform the appropriate remediation of your videos so that you can focus on doing what you do best!

and PSA #2: if you do plan to watch the mccarter boot once it’s no longer not for trade, PLEASE keep in mind how the production team treated yannick-robin eike mirko, who they hired to play ricky, was HORRIFICALLY ableist and absolutely disgusting (explanation below).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: Two screenshots of YouTube comments left by Yannick-Robin Eike Mirko. The first comment reads, “The choreographer (who's best friends with the artistic director, they are both attached to the next production of this show) had to leave two weeks into the show rehearsal after the cast outwardly expressed their discomfort with witnessing me being called "the chair"/referring to me as my mobility aids when blocking choreography, the costume department would cut parts off of costumes that were accessible [ie: the black straps in this video holding up the leather jacket I play during Space Age…were cut off an hour before our first audience appeared. I put the straps on instead of the full jacket for mobility. Older productions let the able bodied person use the straps just fine], the stage is not ADA compliant (I had to be pushed up steep ramps to get onto the stage), believe me, this is a very, very, long list of problems, but the worst one being that their DEI person zoom called me the day after I left the inaccessible stage to throw up blood (left before the last number of the show/after sugar cloud), to tell me that my "physical disabilities are too inconsistent for the requirements of theatre, not just here but regionally and Broadway, and it was a mistake for the McCarter to believe we could take this on. And fired me, giving my ABLE BODIED UNDERSTUDY the last THREE SHOWS OF THE RUN. there were only three shows left. Three. I left the stage one time to throw up (which, I believe able bodied people on Broadway have done before without getting fired for it), and then was fired. Again, the list is much longer than this. P.s. firing someone for being disabled is……illegal.”
The second comment reads, “Hello! I'm the person who played Ricky! The mobility aids stayed because I always need them, I was luckily able to get the directing team to admit the ableist nature of the story (after being told upon casting that Ricky wasn't a disabled character), and we switched it so that I became a multi-instrumentalist. Though, they fired me for being too disabled, so, it wasn't that good of an experience after all. I really appreciate y'all appreciated that I tried to fix that part of the show. I'm sorry I couldn't long term 💔”. /end ID]

RQG Art Masterpost
Hey guys! So recently I've had a wave of notes on some of my old rqg art, and a few new followers. I got really nostalgic about rqg and decided I wanted an easier way to access my rqg-related art (other than the dumpster fire that is tumblr's tagging system), and I wanted other people who are just finding my art to have an easy way of looking at the rest, if they want to. So I dug through everything and made a masterpost! This post contains links to all the rqg art I've ever posted on tumblr, as well as a couple images that I couldn't find the original posts for, despite all the digging. It's loosely organized, emphasis on loosely, but I hope it should be fun to look through if anyone ever feels like it. Spoiler warning for the whole show, just in case anyone new isn’t done with their first listen. There's also stuff in here that's pretty old and that I don't necessarily love anymore, but seeing how my skills progressed over time is still pretty neat. This is a long post, so I've put all the links under the cut. Enjoy!
My top three pieces and why they're my favorites
General:
Shoin's sketch of London
RQG Inktober: Scars
Resurrection Ritual in the Ursan Village
Zolf Smith, cleric of what comes next (comic)
Alex's horrible Barret Monster with knife arms
Ada and Tesla in their lab with the Babbage brain
"Why didn't you do more" (it's all your fault comic)
Blue-veined arm in Other London
Zolf and Azu hear the hivemind
Sasha and Cicero leave Rome behind them
Apophis in human form
Party camping outside the Garden of Yerlik
Kantu!! Because I thought they were cute
Also these two drawings, the ones I couldn't find the original posts for. Azu giving Hamid a piggy-back, and a really old drawing of Azu in Carter's mind museum.

Sasha portrait
Goodbye, Brock
Goodbye, Grizzop
If Grizzop had lived and helped raised Sasha's kids
Sasha deserves bat wings, as a treat
"I so wish you could meet them"
My very first drawing of Sasha, post-Kafka fight
Wilde:
Wilde masterpost (yes he has his own)
"We're all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars"
His brain might've popped

There's one last thing I need to do before I finish my report tomorrow but I thought I'd put this up now because I need incentive. I really, really want to start writing in earnest again, and I want to see what you guys are interested in (though I intend to get to all of these at some point... hopefully!).
Feel free to ask about them and I will happily elaborate, provide summaries, etc! Like I said, I need the incentive and I am fully willing and eager to chat. :D
I make no promises because I'm still having some trouble functioning but I may be starting therapy soon so hopefully that will help me actually be a little more productive!
However, note that, before all of these, I will be prioritizing my skk rbb fic for the month of August... stay tuned... :)

Disabled People Exist
by Michele Sommerstein
Breaking news! Disabled people exist but not for your pity. Disabled people exist but not to remind you, it could be worse, not to be your inspiration not for your approval your education on demand, to satisfy your curiosity
Disabled people exist but not so you can debate, whether or not, ableism is really a thing, as you ablesplain on how the word lame is not actually oppressive, as you play devil’s advocate as if our oppression was just an intellectual exercise, hypothetical and acrobatic
Disabled people exist but not so you can tell us how to identify, calling us “differently abled” and “handicapable” and “special needs” and anything but… disabled which to you is a negative word as if the word itself was the problem and not this default inferior value that you place on disability
Disabled people exist but not to be your fetish, a novelty, your exotic flavor your noble and charitable deed, your viral video to which we did not consent
Disabled people exist but not to be your political photo op as you smile and pose next to us during Disability Awareness Month as you vote to weaken our rights, behind closed doors we’re not your political prop as you claim to suddenly care about accessibility but are only using the ADA to further your racist agenda (Georgia. 2018), As you forget that within every marginalized community Disabled. People. Exist.
Disabled people exist but not to be your tragic plotline Hollywood: Could you please stop killing us off? Politicians: Can you please, stop killing us off?
Disabled people exist Disabled people, exist Disabled, people, exist, but we don’t exist - for you.
About the poem: In 2018, in Randolph County (Georgia), they tried to close 7 voting locations in predominantly black neighborhoods citing that they weren't ADA compliant, but they had been that way for ages, and it was very suspicious that all of a sudden the county "cared" about accessibility in those particular neighborhoods. Many of us in the disability community were not buying this sudden cause for “solidarity”.
Why is the word lame offensive? The word has two meanings. On one hand, it refers to a mobility related disability, and on the other hand, it means weak and inferior. These days, it's used as an insult “Ugh, this movie is so lame!”, which is an example of casual ableism that has been embedded into our everyday vocabulary, that we don't even realize what we are actually saying. To avoid using the word lame, think of alternative words, such as bizarre, weird, wild, boring, tedious, annoying, and all other instances where the word might be used.
Lastly, some people in the disability community do identify as handicapable, etc. In the end, while I do think it's important that we examine what our choices are rooted in, internalized oppression or liberation, it's important to always respect how a person identifies in these situations. It is also never an able bodied person's place to tell a person from the disability community how they should identify.

For Webster, I often created transcripts for existing videos on the website. The aim was to be compliant with the ADA, as well as add to our visibility with search engine optimization. In order for my coworkers to also be able to create a transcript, I compiled a document detailing how to make one, including step-by-step guides, any best practices, or house style that Webster uses. To access either the best practices PDF or the transcript example, please click the links below.

Enhancing Inclusivity through BDA Accessibility Services
In today's digital world, accessibility has become a pivotal aspect of inclusive service delivery. For people with disabilities, navigating the online and offline world can pose challenges if adequate measures are not taken. This is where BDA (Building Design for Accessibility) services play a crucial role. BDA Accessibility Services are designed to ensure that spaces, both physical and digital, are accessible to all, including those with disabilities. These services are vital not only for ensuring compliance with legal standards but also for promoting inclusivity and providing equal opportunities for everyone.
Tumblr media
What Are BDA Accessibility Services?
BDA Accessibility Services refer to a comprehensive approach to creating environments that cater to the needs of individuals with disabilities. This includes ensuring that spaces—whether they are buildings, websites, public services, or software—are designed and modified to be accessible. These services address various aspects such as mobility, vision, hearing, and cognitive challenges, ensuring that no one is excluded from accessing vital services.
Whether through ramps and elevators for physical spaces or screen readers and keyboard navigation for digital platforms, BDA Accessibility Services work towards creating a seamless experience for everyone. Moreover, with the growing awareness and legal mandates surrounding disability rights, businesses and organizations must adopt these services to stay compliant with regulations like the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in the U.S. and other global standards.
The Importance of Accessibility Services
Legal Compliance: Many countries have legal frameworks that mandate accessibility in public spaces, workplaces, and digital platforms. Failing to comply can lead to hefty fines, lawsuits, and damage to a company's reputation. BDA Accessibility Services help ensure that organizations meet these legal requirements, avoiding penalties and creating a better experience for their customers and employees.
Social Responsibility: Offering accessible spaces and services is not just a legal obligation; it is a moral one. Every individual, regardless of their physical or cognitive abilities, deserves to access services with dignity. Implementing accessibility services reflects a company’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, showcasing it as a socially responsible entity.
Broader Audience Reach: By investing in accessibility, businesses open their doors to a wider audience. According to the World Health Organization, over a billion people live with some form of disability. Ignoring accessibility means losing out on a significant portion of potential customers. BDA Accessibility Services can help businesses unlock this market by creating environments that cater to everyone’s needs.
Enhancing User Experience: Accessibility improvements often lead to better user experiences for all. Features such as simplified navigation, voice commands, and easy-to-read interfaces benefit not only people with disabilities but also others, such as elderly users or those in challenging environments. This enhances overall user satisfaction and brand loyalty.
Key Elements of BDA Accessibility Services
Physical Accessibility: This includes structural adjustments to buildings, such as ramps, elevators, tactile flooring, and accessible restrooms. Physical accessibility is critical to ensuring that people with mobility impairments can navigate spaces easily.
Digital Accessibility: Websites, apps, and software must be compatible with assistive technologies like screen readers, offer alternative text for images, and be navigable via keyboard shortcuts. Digital accessibility ensures inclusivity in online environments.
Communication Accessibility: For individuals with hearing or vision impairments, services such as sign language interpretation, captioning for videos, and braille translations are necessary. Communication accessibility ensures that everyone can interact effectively with the content being provided.
BDA Accessibility Services are essential for creating a truly inclusive environment. By addressing the needs of people with disabilities, these services help build spaces and digital platforms that offer equal opportunities for all. As businesses, governments, and organizations increasingly recognize the importance of accessibility, the demand for BDA services will continue to grow, leading to a more inclusive and accessible world for everyone.

Making Visual Media Accessible for All
Introduction:
In a world where visual media is dominant, ensuring accessibility for everyone, including those with visual impairments, is essential. Audio Description Services provide a vital solution by offering spoken descriptions of visual content, making it accessible to individuals who are blind or have low vision. This service not only enhances inclusivity but also ensures compliance with accessibility laws.
What Are Audio Description Services?:
Audio description is a service that provides a verbal narrative of visual elements in media such as videos, films, presentations, and live performances. This narrative typically includes descriptions of actions, settings, characters, and other important visual details that are not conveyed through dialogue alone.
For individuals with visual impairments, audio descriptions are crucial for fully understanding and enjoying visual content. Without these descriptions, they may miss out on key aspects of a video or presentation, leading to an incomplete or less enjoyable experience.
Importance of Audio Description Services:
The importance of Audio Description Services cannot be overstated. In addition to enhancing the experience for individuals with visual impairments, audio descriptions are also legally required in certain contexts. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other accessibility regulations mandate that public institutions and organizations provide accessible media to all individuals, including those with disabilities.
Providing audio descriptions not only ensures compliance with these laws but also demonstrates a commitment to inclusivity. By offering accessible media, organizations show that they value all members of their audience, regardless of their abilities.
How CaptioningStar Enhances Accessibility with Audio Descriptions:
CaptioningStar offers a comprehensive range of Audio Description Services designed to meet the needs of diverse audiences. Their services are tailored to ensure that all visual content is accessible to individuals with visual impairments, whether it's for educational purposes, entertainment, or public information.
Audio Descriptions for Videos:
CaptioningStar provides high-quality audio descriptions for videos, including movies, documentaries, educational content, and more. These descriptions are carefully crafted to provide a clear and concise narrative of the visual elements, ensuring that individuals with visual impairments can fully engage with the content.
Live Audio Descriptions:
In addition to pre-recorded videos, CaptioningStar offers live audio description services for events such as conferences, theater performances, and public meetings. These live descriptions are delivered in real-time, allowing individuals with visual impairments to participate fully in the event.
Customization and Integration:
CaptioningStar’s Audio Description Services are highly customizable, allowing organizations to tailor the descriptions to their specific needs. Whether it’s adjusting the pacing, tone, or content of the descriptions, CaptioningStar ensures that the audio descriptions seamlessly integrate with the visual content, providing a cohesive and enjoyable experience for all viewers.
Conclusion:
In a world where visual media plays a central role, ensuring that all individuals can access and enjoy this content is crucial. Audio Description Services provide a vital solution for individuals with visual impairments, allowing them to fully engage with visual media. CaptioningStar’s comprehensive audio description services ensure that all visual content is accessible, inclusive, and compliant with accessibility laws.
By investing in audio descriptions, organizations demonstrate their commitment to inclusivity and ensure that their content is accessible to everyone, regardless of their visual abilities. As technology continues to evolve, CaptioningStar remains at the forefront, providing innovative solutions that meet the needs of today’s diverse audiences.

Why Outsource Signage Design Services for Efficient Branding and Compliance
Tumblr media
Sign design is an indispensable practice in the modern digital era as it communicates brand identity, informs, and complies with legal standards. Be it a digital display or a physical sign, creating appealingly functional signage requires expertise.
Companies are outsourcing signage design services to offer quality design, cost-effective options, and regulatory compliance with the ADA. From digital signage services to ADA-compliant signage, outsourcing ensures that each minute detail associated with signage is perfectly cared for.
Why Outsource Signage Design Services?
Designing signage is an art as well as a science. Outsourcing offers a range of benefits that include access to creative talent, reduction in overheads, and the capability to concentrate on the core business area.
Whether for retail, corporate, or public spaces, outsourcing will ensure that your signage is designed according to your brand specifications and that it also strictly adheres to all the regulations in place.
Benefits of Outsourcing Signage Design
Skill Set: Outsourcing means engaging a team of experts in signage design, with experience in various signage types. In the process, professionals know how to play with every minute detail to make signs attractive yet serving their purpose.
Economical Solutions: Outsourcing negates the need to maintain an in-house design team, thus reducing costs on salaries, software, and equipment. Hence, it is quite affordable even for moderate-sized companies.
Time Efficiency: Outsourcing will let your business speed up signage design. Indeed, a dedicated team can work in isolation to develop quality designs to meet your expectations.
Digital Signage Services for Modern Marketing
With the growth of technology, digital signage services have developed to become an efficient channel for marketing one's business. Digital signage refers to a medium of communication that enables a company to reach an audience with or without interactivity on dynamically changing screens placed in public areas, at points of sale, and within corporate settings. It is an interactive medium used to show information, advertisements, and messaging of brands with more flexibility than traditional static signage allows.
How Digital Signage Enhances Customer Experience
Using digital signage, services can update content in real-time, hence making any enterprise make immediate changes due to an evolving need or to push across something new. Digital screens are more engaging for onlookers compared to traditional signage.
Additionally, it allows for the display of videos, animations, and interactive elements that will drive an enhanced customer experience.
Outsourcing Digital Signage Services
Outsourcing digital signage designs ensures that businesses stay current with evolving technologies and trends in design. A good designer will know how to use the available screen space to maximize the visual appeal of the content for stunning displays. Outsourcing helps businesses ensure their digital signage smoothly integrates with their existing strategies and systems.
Importance of ADA Compliant Signage
Aside from digital solutions, physical signage is often also strictly governed. This is very much the case in developments or projects requiring ADA compliant signage. Such signage ensures that businesses effectively communicate with their audience, enhance accessibility for people with disabilities, and comply with legal standards, creating a more inclusive environment for all.
Following the ADA guidelines allows companies to take their customers' needs into consideration by ensuring that all customers can have an easy way of getting through their spaces.
Outsource ADA Compliant Signage Design
By outsourcing the design of their ADA-compliant signage, businesses ensure that their signage will be compliant to all legal standards. Professional signage designers will be aware of all the regulations regarding ADA and can therefore create compliant yet cosmetically pleasing signs.
Outsourcing signage design services in digital signage services or even the creation of ADA-compliant signage will work well in the rebranding of a business while also trying to meet the legal requirements, creating customer engagement.

Semi related, but I saw Lewis Rossman do a video where he was talking with this disabled guy that... I think he actually built his wheelchair himself or at least had customized a lot of it
Cause... like the foam pad he had on his seat would have been something like $3000 cause it was "custom", but... getting the foam, cutting it to size, and having someone sew an outside protector for it was more like $20
...mhh... hold on, I will find the video and post a link to the guy's website... here it is, The Mobility Independence Foundation
Anyway... my point is that if I get my shit together enough in other ways, I'd very much like to reach out to a group like that and be like "you tell me how to do it and do it right, and I'm happy to help assemble wheelchairs for people"
And of course when I say assemble, I mean like... custom, cause the more I pay attention the more obvious it is to me that any kind of mobility aid needs to be customized to the user
Like you get where I'm coming from, if I'm sat here thinking that maybe I should learn to make my own tv, then I sure as hell want to see people having their own wheelchair that's customized. Whole reason I'm thinking about "what if I just bought the screen and shoved my current tv's electronics in a custom frame" is so I have control and get just what I need... and people who need mobility aids need that a hell of a lot more than I need a tv, you know?
...maybe once I get the back porch in, which I want to put an ADA compliant ramp on... maybe once that's done and this old house is more accessible at least on the first floor... maybe that'll be the time I'm both more capable and also more... in the right mental space for it
But that is something I'd like to do... love it if I could help people out making custom mobility aids, both giving people something that's custom tailored to their needs, and also be able to like... send em home with spare parts and the knowledge how to fix it if something goes wrong... not have em stuck waiting for insurance to cover things

Went to a video game bar and drag queen bingo last night to distract myself from the anniversary date yesterday. I had a blast with friends but the place wasn't ADA compliant and I was in my wheelchair so my friends had to half-scare the shit out of me to get me into the bar because they'd never lifted my wheelchair before.
