I had a draft of about 5 of these results ready to go pre-face reveal but then everything went to shit so just for some closure here are the results (FROM SEPTEMBER!) ^_^
Tumblr media
This chart shows the percentage of total respondents who indicated that they mained the people above. This isn't a comprehensive list, with other streamers like SBI, Benchtrio, or other DSMP-adjacent streamers rounding the answers out!
of the 598 people who filled out the survey, 98.5% main one of the people in the above chart, and 92.8% main one or more of the Dream Team.
Tumblr media
From this question, it seems like DSMP creators are the main pipeline into dtblr—but a good 40% of us didn't start on the Dream Team side!
We have a good amount of people who came from the Corpse/OTV side of Twitch, and a decent amount of you who have been here a while, since SMPLive :]
Tumblr media
A lot of us have been here a long time—66% of us were here before 2021. The vast majority have been here since 2021, a good 93% of us!
Tumblr media
I thought it'd be super interesting to see how watching the Dream Team may have changed how we interact with their primary game, and it looks like a majority of us were crafters before and still are! They managed to get nearly a fifth of his audience here into playing as well!
Tumblr media
A toast to the loss of most of dtblr's favorite MCC player to watch, something that we definitely mourned when we heard the news. But if you're looking for a new POV to watch, survey respondents put down a wide range of players—just outside these top 8 were Ranboo, Tubbo, Grian, Illumina, Purpled, and Hannah!
Tumblr media
Another loss for 6% of dtblr with how this question aged, RIP Trust Issues :( But for the remaining 94% of us, our favorite Drusic is still on streaming platforms. Change my Clothes is only...500k listens away from 67 million listens on Spotify so 👀
Tumblr media
Wow ok as this goes on I realize just how many chapters have ended over the last few months but a salute to the 26% of loreheads on dtblr! On to the next chapter :]
Tumblr media
Now to a touchy subject...who's in the dteam privs? According to the survey responses, 39% of dtblr is in all three! Interestingly, there are more people who follow Dream's alt than his main. Fair enough, there are enough piss tweets on there to warrant unfollowing it!
Tumblr media
Word of mouth and the YouTube algorithm seems to have been the best way for the dteam to get to us—interestingly enough, a good amount of people found out through either Heat Waves the song or through the fanfiction, ranging from it crashing ao3 to commentary YouTubers talking about it on their channels!
Tumblr media
Now for some psychic damage, I'm seeing a lot more of RTAH posting on my dash nowadays but here's some solidarity for everyone who may have come from similar backgrounds ^_^
Tumblr media
Now for some more history—a vast majority of us came from gaming content backgrounds, and nearly 17% of us were primarily mcyt enjoyers. Personal shoutout to Team Crafted viewers we're holding hands <3
Tumblr media
Nearly half of dtblr doesn't consume much Minecraft content outside of the stuff our boys are in, though there's still a pretty large amount of people who watch other SMP's and keep up with the speedrunning scene!
Tumblr media
This one is an ode to the lurkers who keep the economy strong—even now you guys are an essential part of dtblr! Same to the 30-40% of people who post the stuff for lurkers and other dtblr members to see. Everyone is important to keeping our little island afloat <3
Tumblr media
Now onto Banter, most of dtblr doesn't make time for Banter Wednesdays, but if there's an interesting episode, it seems like the trio will capture our attention :]
Tumblr media
Adding some literal variety to our results, I thought it'd be interesting to see what common variety games are our favorites! 95% of us would be tapped in wholeheartedly for Geoguessr or Jackbox streams. On the other hand, Fall Guys and Fortnite are in the middle of the pack, whereas it seems like FPS games are our mortal enemies—62% of us would tap out during Valorant while 46% wouldn't be paying attention to CS:GO.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Onto the topic of shipping, DNF steamrolled every other ship listed to have nearly 86% of responders saying they ship it. That lines up with the follow-up question, where nearly 90% of respondents either have experience with shipping RPF in the past, or have been caught up with DNFer supreme Dream's antics. Otherwise, there was a good distribution of love for most popular ships within DTQK+, with Karlnap, DNN, and Karlnapity leading the pack at around 25% each!
Tumblr media
Ever wonder how dtblr is spread out across the globe because of the dash being dead at different times? Well, the vast majority of us are in North America and Europe, with 86% of us being between GMT +4 and GMT -4. Much like our streamers, though, a lot of us have fucked up sleep schedules so time zones aren't as much of an issue LMAO
Tumblr media
Next up is a fairly simple one, I had another question that asked for gender but there was, as expected, a lot of variance and nuance that I couldn't fit into a neat graphic. But this one is a fairly simple one to graph so Well here's the 24/7 pride parade Dream mentioned coming in hot, with about 95% of us identifying as LGBT+ or questioning!
Tumblr media
I wanted to test out my theory that GNF mains are also biased towards CS/Engineering fields, so I asked what people were studying! There's a pretty big bias towards the arts and humanities around here, but we also have just as many STEM people around, good on dtblr for academic diversity! As for my hypothesis, 22% of people who indicated they were George mains studied some form of CS/Engineering. George mains also made up 70% of all people who studied CS/Engineering. So cheers to my stem kid gnfers o/
Finally, I don't really know the best way to make a graphic for the favorite colors question, but just know that 50% of us chose either green or blue, and it was a near-even 25%-25% split. Great job dnfers, Dream would be proud <3
Thanks for reading! I hope that this was fun to look through, and I'll be posting an identical one for new dtblr soon! Super excited to see how things have changed since Well. anyways. Also wanted to say thank you to everyone who filled it out, reading all your answers was a ton of fun and I got a ton of laughs out of some of y'alls bonus section content and the few joke answers I got throughout <333

Rambling about scrapped projects so I don't feel like the work went to waste
Tumblr media
I've only really made like, 3 little games. Which admittedly, I should be trying to make myself Finish more projects just so I can get more experience and be able to reliably work on something larger. Inbetween, I get the spark to make a buncha different ideas that usually don't get very far for one reason or another. I know this is a bad habit, and I'm tryin' to work on it.
Otherwise though, gonna talk about a few projects where I wanna show off what little work I did put in before deciding I was better off killing it, including a "follow-up" to Grenade Volley.
This is just some not-even-prototype-level stuff with myself rambling about things I wanted to do. So be warned before hitting read more!
Drivin' Breach
youtube
So this was started in part based on my desire to create something utilizing the Grenade Volley world with a more "safe" gameplay style. I absolutely love old distance games, like Learn to Fly, Kitten Cannon, Shopping Cart Hero, etc etc but I realized it wasn't a super common style of game these days so wanted to take a crack at making one.
I had the basics of it going and I was pretty proud of what I had artistically and in terms of tone. Ambitiously, I even wanted a fully animated opening cutscene, but in hindsight that might've been a bit much to try and pull off.
To try and set it apart, I imagined that one main hook would be having a wide variety of "special items" that you could used to propel yourself further, each one controlling differently for players that wanted some variety, and maybe even implementing individual upgrade lines for said special items. I wanted to make the "Magic Tail" item a buttplug tail.
youtube
After a bit of time of working I just realized things weren't coming together how I would've liked them to. Physics weren't quite satisfactory, I couldn't figure out how to implement gliders, and I wasn't super confident about balancing it to stretch the game out but also make it feel rewarding. Those combined with waning passion for the project just kinda killed it off. I was pretty proud of the art and stuff I did for it, though, and what I had going so far.
I also ended up applying some of the code (where the world moves around the player, allowing for infinite movement) to Downhill to Infinity!
(Also that shop music you here is Closed on Sundays by Mana Junkie, a CC3.0 track I found online)
Earth Servant Ms. Usagi
youtube
I was super enthusiastic about this one for a while!! I was stoked about the idea of making a game using Ms. Usagi because she was one of my many characters made with games in mind from the get-go. I ended up settling on this weird mix of Megaman-style, fast platforming, and stylish melee combat. Notice, though, the animations are not finished at ALL.
I wanted to push fun and snappy combat, encouraging the player to bounce between enemies while using environment and speed to their advantage. Think like a hectic anime fight where the main character is running around boppin' every bad guy while darting between them. A style meter was also applied, rewarding chained attacks.
To go over the moveset: Attacking from a standstill performs an uppercut, attacking in the air performs an air kick. If you only tap the attack button for the air kick, it stops Usagi in mid-air and keeps her close to the enemy. If you hold it, however, it will both put her current speed into the kick AND launch the enemy according to said speed. Holding down while attacking in the air will slam to the ground. She also has a blaster move that's especially good for continuing combos. For defense, I added dashing maneuvers and a block/parry inspired by MGR.
Tumblr media
I still think this kick feels fuckin sick to pull off.
Few problems came up. First one was just plain ol' being scared of level design, but that one I coulda bruteforced through. More importantly at one point I took a break and went back to it later only to realize that it Wasn't Fun. Movement felt way too slippery, I wasn't making the fast momentum-based movement blend well with the fast combo-based combat. If I wanna do anything like this again, I'd have to figure out a better way to blend this.
Either way, I know for certain I'd LOVE to make a Ms. Usagi game in the future, I think she could make for something very fun and poppy and stylish.
BONUS
youtube
During one of the beta versions of Godot 4, I had short-lived thoughts of wanting to make a wave-based FPS to play with its 3D features. I wanted the game to have a gross, crusty aesthetic. It never got far at all, but I made a "gore harvester" machine for it and I still really like that thing. It was fun to draw such ugly textures.

In honor of my 'research' post, and because I've seen an alarming amount of misidentifications in alt text for photographs, here's a (not so) short list of North American deer species you'll probably see on your dash. I'll probably expand this at some point, but for now, we're focusing on NA species as those are what I'm most familiar with. 1. Whitetail Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) Whitetails are endemic to the Americas but have been introduced in some areas of Europe and New Zealand. There are a number of subspecies of Whitetails including the tiny Florida Key deer (O. v. clavium). While not a subspecies, the famous Seneca white deer are also whitetails.
Whitetails can vary greatly in appearance depending on the region. Florida Whitetail doe and fawn:

Tumblr media
(Image by Angie Vogel - Here) Whitetail antlers grow a variety of shapes and on rare occasions may be palmate.

2. Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus) Mule deer are visually similar to whitetails but can be distinguished by their tail color, ear size, and antler growth pattern. They are grouped into two categories: mule deer, and black-tailed deer. Black-tailed deer include only Sitka deer (O. h. sitkensis) and Columbian black-tailed deer (O. h. columbianus). All other subspecies of O. hemionus are considered mule deer. Mule deer are found primarily in the western United States but have been introduced to Argentina and Hawaii. Mule deer buck. Note the black tip to the tail and the forking antler tines:

Do not confuse the Sitka deer for the Sika deer! The Sitka deer (O. h. sitkensis) is a small mule deer found in British Columbia and Alaska while the Sika deer (Cervus nippon) is a spotted deer native to East Asia. Sitka buck in velvet:

3. Wapiti/Elk (Cervus canadensis) Elk are found in both North America as well as Central and East Asia. Despite similar appearances and the capability to produce fertile offspring, elk and red deer (Cervus elaphus) are considered distinct species. DNA evidence suggests that C. canadensis are more closely related to Sika deer (C.nippon) than they are red deer (C. elaphus). Elk can be easily distinguished from other North American deer species by their size, light body and dark neck, white rump, and distinctive antlers. Elk bull and cows:

(Image by Olga Rudchenko for Adobe Stock - Here) 4. Caibou/Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) Caribou are native to the Yukon, Alaska, Northwestern Territories and Nunavut. They are found across Eurasia as well through the taiga and tundra, though Eurasian and American caribou have distinct subspecies. Caribou are distinct from other North American species in that both bulls and cows grow antlers, though the prevalence of antlers on cows varies between subspecies. When grown by both sexes, antlers are usually larger in bulls and are a prime method of distinguishing between subspecies. Size and coloration vary greatly between subspecies. Borreal Woodland Caribou Bull:

Tumblr media
(Image by Jay Frandsen - Here) Caribou antlers have distinctive "brow palms" that extend over their head from the main beam.
Tumblr media
(Public domain image - Here) 4. Moose/elk (Alces alces) The moose (sometimes called elk across Eurasia) is the largest living deer species. Moose are identifiable by their large size, distinctive nose and palmate antlers. The diameter of antler beams is determinate of the bull's age. Like other species of deer, moose have a number of subspecies. Not a ton more to say about these guys, they are readily identifiable.
Tumblr media
(Image by Harry Collins for Adobe Stock - Here)
5. Central American Red Brocket (Mazama temama) and the Yucatan Brown Brocket (Odocoileus pandora) Brocket deer as a whole are rarely observed. The Central American red brocket is classed as data deficient by the IUCN. I doubt you will see many of these cross your dash misidentified, but in any case, I will include pictures of both. I'm not a deer expert by any stretch, nor do I have any professional experience in deer identification, so if I got anything wrong please let me know so I can fix it! This post is informed by basic research as well as my observations working with the pelts of some of these animals for my job. I did my best to properly credit all photographers, but again if anything you see here is incorrect please inform me so I can correct it.

Annon-Guy: How's A.B.A in StrIVe compared to previous games?
Is she fun or not nearly as much?
Oh, that's right, I never did a write up review, did I?
Well, now's a good place to start.
Based on my experience, she's a Feast or Famine type character, but she can manage very well Defensively with the super-armor absorbing mechanics she has at her disposal.
I'd say she's quite a bit stronger than she was in Accent Core in terms of overcoming her original weaknesses (Knockdown Syndrome, Damage Accumulation, etc). But at the same time she doesn't quite have as many "melee options" as she originally did in her original Goku Moroha (Double Edged) state.
That's not to say Jealousy isn't as effective in combat, it very well is, but there's certain things with regard to recovery that still make her vulnerable if she runs out of Jealousy at the wrong time, much the same way that Nagoriyuki suffers from a Blood Spurt.
This, and the wider range of move variety in Accent Core means she was technically more viable in air combos in that game compared to this one, but that's not really that big a deal when you consider Strive's current modern mechanics (not to mention being able to dash cancel attacks on block in many circumstances).
Still, she still has something equivalent to a Guard Crush state on offense, but it's not quite as effective as some of her original move kit.
There's really no telling what the future holds for Strive right now, but I'm hoping more gameplay content gets added, not just new characters and stages/music.
We still haven't learned about Team of 3 yet, so the finer details of that mode (much less anything else in the works) remain to be seen!
For now though, I think A.B.A. is a fine addition to the roster, there's no doubt about that!
It's very interesting to note that A.B.A. has unique interactions with Testament and Elphelt, though I find it more interesting when she fights characters that she never previously encountered from previous games, like Leo Whitefang, Ramlethal, Sin, and even Bedman.
Of course that's true for other characters as well, but it adds a little something of extra "flavor" to Strive's unique blend of spice: that is to say, these are matchups we've not seen before, so it's interesting to see how players will navigate around the meta of these kinds of fights.
It's worth noting that they plan to add "even more characters" to the roster, and Season 4 is also confirmed as well... so we've got quite the future ahead of us!
Side Note: It's worth noting that A.B.A.'s Isuka Incarnation was unique because of her A.O.E. (Area of Effect) attacks which were good against multiple opponents on screen at once! Her Life loss mechanics were also centered around Survival Mode, which was the basis for Isuka's Arcade Gameplay mechanic. This meant that she had to use her Blood Packs wisely in order to conserve her health in the Survival portion of Arcade Mode in Isuka more than other characters.

Yu Sheng (鱼生) or Yusang in Cantonese, meaning “raw fish” in Chinese, is a salad dish comprising thinly slicesd raw fish and various seasonings that are mixed together as diners toss the ingredients. It is a dish usually eaten during Chinese New Year. Traditionally a simple dish with few ingredients, the yusheng recipe has evolved over the decades and now comprises a wide variety of ingredients. Our second yusheng for this Lunar New Year is a small serving of Grand Fortune Abalone Yusheng (S$49.90++) from White Restaurant. In line with the coming Year of The Rabbit, this yusheng comes with an auspicious rabbit ornament.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today, the common form of yusheng is the 七彩鱼生 (Seven-coloured Raw Fish salad) served in local restaurants during the Chinese New Year period. Also referred to as 发财鱼生 (Prosperity Raw Fish Salad) or 新年鱼生 (Chinese New Year Raw Fish Salad), this colourful take on yusheng was said to be created in the 1960s by chefs Lau Yoke Pui, Tham Yui Kai, Sin Leong and Hooi Kok Wai, together known as the “Four Heavenly Kings” in the Singapore restaurant scene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ritual of eating yusheng during Chinese New Year involves all the people at the table tossing the salad and uttering auspicious phrases. The dish is deemed auspicious because of the homonymic meanings behind its ingredients, which suggest blessings and good fortune for the new year:  鱼(Yu) is a homonym for “fish” and “abundance”, while 生 (Sheng) means both “raw” and “life”. Together, yusheng implies “abundance of wealth and long life”. In the Cantonese dialect, the dish is known as 捞起 (Lo Hei), where “lo” implies “tossing up good fortune” and 起 (Hei) means “to rise”, again a reference to a prosperous business and thus its popularity with businessmen during the new year celebrations. The ingredients of yusheng vary among restaurants, and one such recipe is presented below along with examples of auspicious phrases that may be uttered as each ingredient is added.
Tumblr media
Step 1: All at the table offer auspicious greetings.
Words: 恭喜发财 (Gong Xi Fa Cai - Wishing you wealth and good fortune) or 万事如意 (Wan Shi Ru Yi - May all your wishes be fulfilled).
Step 2: Add fish, which symbolises abundance or excess through the year.
Words: 年年有余 (Nian Nian You Yu)
Step 3: Add pomelo over the fish for luck and auspicious value.
Words: 大吉大利 (Da Ji Da Li)
Then dash pepper over the ingredients for greater prosperity and fortune.
Words: 招财进宝 (Zhao Cai Jin Bao)
Pour oil, circling the ingredients to symbolise the multi-fold increase of profits and to encourage money to flow in from all directions.
Words: 一本万利 (Yi Ben Wan Li) and 财源广进 (Cai Yuan Guang Jin)
Step 4: Add carrots to the fish, indicating blessings of good luck.
Words: 鸿运当头 (Hong Yun Dang Tou)
Then place shredded green radish on the fish, symbolising eternal youth.
Words: 青春常驻 (Qing Chun Chang Zhu)
Next, add shredded white radish for prosperity in business and promotion at work.
Words: 风生水起 (Feng Sheng Shui Qi) and 步步高升 (Bu Bu Gao Sheng)
Step 5: Add condiments. First, sprinkle peanut crumbs on the dish, symbolising a household filled with gold and silver. As an icon of longevity, peanuts also symbolise eternal youth.
Words: 金银满屋 (Jin Yin Man Wu)
Sesame seeds follow, symbolising growth in business.
Words: 生意兴隆 (Sheng Yi Xing Long)
Add deep-fried flour crisps in the shape of golden pillows, with wishes that literally translate to mean that the whole floor would be filled with gold.
Words: 遍地黄金 (Bian Di Huang Jin)
Step 6: All at the table stand up and toss the salad an auspicious seven times with loud shouts of Lo Hei (捞起) and other new year wishes.
Action: Mix ingredients by pushing them towards the centre, which is an encouragement to push on the good luck to all at the table. Some may lift clumps of the salad as high as possible to symbolise the increase in good fortune.
This Yu Sheng (鱼生) only came with five small pieces of abalones so we enhanced it with an additional can of baby abalones. When we are ready to toss, we found out that the restaurant had mistakenly given us two containers of oil instead of one oil and one yuzu sauce. Without the sauce, there is no sweetness, so sis quickly juiced a couple of Mandarin oranges to replace the forgotten sweet sauce. Overall, not a satisfying eat due to the lack of a crucial condiment.

Boy, it's been ages since I've done one of these... I'll start this by yelling at you for ever doubting or second-guessing yourself of not being capable of writing a good Luna. Fuck off, that was delightful. Now, since this is in fact an ask, if you had narrow it down 3 aspects that makes you write dialogue and particularly children's dialogue, what would they be? I know you obviously have a lot of experience, but that doesn't always translate well to paper... Love ya 😍 #nextchapterwhen
Hey random reader! This answer has been a long time coming, but I'm going through some old asks and figured I'd give this one a try.
So three things that I find Important in writing dialogue? Let's see...
1. Unique character voice. The goal should always be for the reader to be able to distinguish who is talking even without a dialogue tag. Just a few examples from my writing:
Harry usually talks more dryly, struggles to put things into words and can be unintentionally blunt because of it. He's got some 'ers' and 'erms'. He's not very verbose unless he's more emotional.
Abby talks a lot. She starts sentences and goes in a different directions. She's probably got the most dashes and ellipses in her dialogue. When she's nervous or excited, she talks more. When she's upset, she doesn't talk much at all.
Ron's dialogue is one of the most fun to write for me. He's usually poking fun at people, lightening the mood, being the voice of reason. A lot of his dialogue is sarcastic, filled with slang and swears. He's not a talker either. He'll have the one-liners that serve as comic relief most of the time. But when he's serious, he's gonna toss a few words at you that instantly shut you up and make you realize you're being an idiot.
Hermione is also fun to write. She's obviously going to have the biggest vocabulary, never swear, not have too many dashes and ellipses because she's usually very eloquent. Sometimes her anxiety will kick in though, and she may stutter and overcompensate by talking more.
As for the kids, writing children's dialogue is definitely tricky. They all need their own voices too. They can't be too cutesy or too mature. I find what helps is writing normal dialogue, but then changing grammar structure and word usage to reflect their age. They're probably all going to have a lot of run on sentences and dashes to reflect how their thoughts shift more quickly. Lily will have a few speaking errors (not overdone) like saying certain big words wrong (ex. 'vestigates instead of investigates) or having grammatical errors ("funner" instead of more fun), etc. Lily is also very repetitive sometimes to indicate when she's being whiny. Al doesn't talk much except when he's with an adult one on one, or he's fighting with his siblings. James takes over most conversations, even with his cousins and tends to be bossy and self-assured. You won't see him with as many rambling/ellipses-filled dialogues.
And now that I've rambled, the next two important factors:
2. Sentence structure variety. This applies to all writing, but dialogue should especially not be a whole page of:
"blah blah blah," he said.
"blah blah blah," she said.
You need to mix it up to get a nice rhythm of reading and to make the conversation feel organic.
A. "B," he said.
"B", she said. "B."
A.
"B".
(if that makes any sense)
Adding movement in the dialogue tags is Important as well to remind readers that these are living breathing people that aren't just spouting words at each other.
This kind of leads into the last thing (for now, there's many other things I'm sure).
3. Creating a rhythm. Idk how to properly title it or describe this. But the time it takes to read the words on the page should be relatively equal to the rhythm in which you want the characters to speak. So if you want a pause, use words outside the dialogue to create the pause. For ex:
"The sky is blue," Harry said.
"You're right."
Vs.
"The sky is blue," Harry said.
Abby looked up, squinting at sun before looking back at Harry. "You're right."
In the second example, you're forced to create a pause in the dialogue which more naturally replicates the rhythm of speaking. I find it helps to read things out loud to hear the rhythm. But just like with point #2, you want a good variety in rhythm. Cause if it's too uniform it won't sound natural.
Okay I hope that answers your question. I could go on about this stuff cause I love dialogue so much. Prose can gtfo though

04/01/2024: Lakeside and home
Flora and fauna photos taken in this set are of: 1. One of a few pretty Robins I saw on the walk and in the garden today, kissed by the soft morning sun. It was good to see one get a worm at one point. 2. Moss on wood. 3. Coots and Mallard. 4. Female and male Mallard on a flooded area, always an enchanting sight. 5. Some fascinating and striking comfrey leaves which were good to see. 6 and 8. My first Kingfisher and Nuthatch of the year which I got smashing views of, not birds I see at Lakeside all the time that I felt I might have a chance of adding to my year list and I was thrilled I did. I am on a brilliant run for seeing the Kingfisher at Lakeside currently and it was exceptional to watch this radiant dainty gem of a bird dash across Concorde and beach lakes, fish and from standing the other side of beach lake from the benches seeing it hover in the air above the lake and the perch on one of the benches was surreal and amazing. Only the second time I've ticked Kingfisher one of my very favourite birds for the year at Lakeside after New Year's Day 2016 when it hovered like it did today inspiring me onto a brilliant year of birds so it's great to get it under the belt for 2024 today. For the charming Nuthatch it's the second year running I've ticked it for the year here. 7. One of a few Song Thrushes encountered this morning seeing and hearing their melodious song one of my favourites well a perfect soundtrack to a great long morning out embraced by nature. 9. Greylag Goose. 10. Worm out the front this morning one of a few seen.
My first Bullfinches, a fair few Wrens and Tufted Duck with great views of a male of the year were also great to see on my walk taking my year list to a pleasing 55, it was exceptional to get astonishing views of three or four Bullfinches a few times both the sensational crimson chested male and female again one I don't often see at Lakeside so this was a stunning experience. Other highlights on the walk were Coal Tit, Long-tailed Tit, Great Tit, Blue Tit, Goldfinch, Siskins a big star species of my young year, Chaffinch, Dunnock and Jay others I've started the year well for, Collared Dove, very strong Redwing views, Blackbird, Green Woodpecker and Great Spotted Woodpecker seen and heard so well again, Herring Gull, Moorhen, Great Crested Grebes including more amorous looks between the pair again and Cormorant. It was good to see Cormorant flying from home today too with Goldfinch and Collared Dove enjoyed at home too. Plant highlights on the Lakeside walk were wild carrot, pineappleweed, gorse, cleavers, catkins, mistletoe, rose hips and clover leaves with firethorn berries and lavender enjoyed in the garden in the lovely morning sun. Grey Squirrels seen well again, my first Brown Rat of the year and a variety of fungi including the turkey tail were also good to see at Lakeside.

Fate and Phantasms #292: Himiko
Tumblr media
Today on Fate and Phantasms we’re building Chaldea’s next top idol in D&D 5e, Himiko! hi-miko himiko, himihimiko!
but yeah, she’s a Sun Soul Monk to shine a spotlight on her enemies, and a Circle of the Stars Druid to become an oracle like she’s supposed to. wild how this is the third time we’ve used this subclass, but the first time we actually care about all the future-y stuff, huh?
check out her build breakdown below the cut, or her character sheet over here!
next up: I AM THE STORM THAT IS APPROACHING, PROVOKING BLACK CLOUDS IN ISOLATION
Race and Background
Himiko is a Human, but we need some extra goodies to make this build work so we’re giving her a Mark of Passage, which gives her Courier’s Speed for an extra 5’ of movement, Intuitive Motion for a d4 on any acrobatics or land vehicle check, and Magical Passage through mirrors, letting you cast misty step once a long rest, teleporting up to 30’ as a bonus action.
Finally, your Spells of the Mark get added to your spell list, so once you take some druid levels you can prepare them like any other spell! This includes Expeditious Retreat and Jump at 1st level, Misty Step and Pass Without Trace at 2nd level, then Blink and Phantom Steed, Dimension Door and Freedom of Movement, and finally Teleportation Circle. we’re here mostly for Misty Step, but any kind of mobility is going to go well on a monk.
We’re also making you an Acolyte. I know she’s also a ruler, but she’s isolated and speaks through seers, that sounds more acolyte-ish. Since we’re getting religion from your class anyway, you’ll get Insight and Performance here. Yeah we had to make at least one joke about the song, sorry.
Ability Scores
Your Wisdom should be as high as possible. You’re so good at seeing you can see… the future. That’s how divination works, right? After that is Dexterity. Ya don’t wear much, and you hit like a goddamn train. Speaking of, your Strength is next. We don’t really “need” it, but you hit like a goddamn train. Your Constitution is also pretty good, though we’re kind of banking on your Ruler defenses picking up the slack here a bit. This means your Charisma and Intelligence are going to be pretty low, mostly because they’re the stats you can do without the most. sorry.
Class Levels
1. Monk 1: we’re starting off as a monk pretty much entire because of your Unarmored Defense, since we can’t do much else if you die at level 1. This gives you an AC based on your dexterity and wisdom, as long as you aren’t wearing armor or using a shield. That probably won’t be an issue for this build. You also come out swinging with Martial Arts, which comes with all kinds of goodies. You can use dexterity to punch things. make an extra attack as a bonus action, and you even get a sweet, sweet d4 as a damage die for hitting stuff. That’ll get bigger as we level up, but it’s still better than a flat 1. Technically you can use this on any monk weapon, but Himiko’s a big fan of the hands.
You also get proficiency in Strength and Dexterity saves, as well as Athletics to shore up your strength and Religion, as promised.
2. Monk 2: second level monks get Ki Points equal to their level per short rest, which you can use to do cool oracle stuff like dash, dodge, attack twice, or disengage as a bonus action. you only get one bonus action per turn, but variety is the spice of afterlife. You also get Unarmored Movement, making you faster than the average bear and getting even faster as you level up.
3. Monk 3: Third level monks can Deflect Missiles as a reaction, reducing the damage of incoming arrows and even throwing it back if you reduce it to 0 damage by spending a ki point. After all, they were aiming at your afterimage! I guess!
The real boon here is setting you down the Way of the Sun Soul, letting you make ranged radiant attacks as part of your attack action, using your dexterity to attack with it. this move is also affected by your martial arts die increasing, and you can even use it in the place of your flurry of blows if you a) made the attack action with a radiant sun bolt in it this turn and b) spend 1 ki point.
It’s not a powerful laser beam, but it sure is cheap!
4. Monk 4: At fourth level, we’re going to spend your first Ability Score Improvement to bump up your Wisdom for stronger spells and a higher AC. You can also Slow Fall as a reaction, reducing your fall damage.
5. Druid 1: In order to have stronger spells, first you need Spells. You can get those from your first level of druid, which lets you prepare and cast spells using your Wisdom! Pick up Druidcraft for your first taste of the oracle life, and Mending to keep your mirrors in one piece. 7 years of bad luck is a hefty price to pay when it can take weeks for a campaign to progress a few days.
As for your first level spells, being able to swap them out each day means you can pick whatever tickles your fancy, though I would suggest focusing on divination spells and anything you pick up that deals radiant damage. Those are both going to be throughlines this build.
you also learn Druidic. It’s a language!
6. Druid 2: Speaking of divination spells, you might have noticed we skipped over a cantrip that would fit right in. Thankfully, we get the ability to cast Guidance from your first feature from the Circle of the Stars, the Star Map.  As long as you’re holding the tiny object (like. say, a set of mirrors) you can cast guidance for an extra d4 on the target’s next skill check, and you can cast Guiding Bolt as though you prepared it. It’s another radiant attack, and while it uses a spell slot and can’t be used multiple times in one action, it’s pretty sweet. It does plenty of damage, and the next attack against that creature has advantage thanks to your future sight shenanigans. That being said you can also cast guiding bolt without using a spell slot proficiency times per day.
You can also use Wild Shape twice per short rest, though it’ll be slightly more in-character to use a Starry Form instead. Both use the same resource, but starry form always lasts 10 minutes and makes you all shiny. When you use the starry form, you can pick one of three constellations. the Archer lets you make another kind of radiant beam attack using your wisdom as a bonus action each turn. the Chalice lets you heal more while healing. the Dragon gives you assurance on intelligence and wisdom checks, as well as concentration saves, so if you roll lower than a 10 it’ll count as a ten. The archer is the best option here, but the dragon’s nice too. It’s great to be able to concentrate on something. I assume, anyway.
7. Druid 3: At third level you can cast second level spells like Misty Step! It’s another bonus action, but dammit teleporting through mirrors is so cool. You can also use an Augury to figure out what the future’s gonna be like- ask your DM a question about an action you’re taking, and how it’ll affect you in the next 30 minutes. if they say weal it’s probably good. woe means it’s probably bad. weal & woe means it’s a mixed bag, and while they can technically just give you a coy response it’s kind of a dick move.
8. Monk 5: Fifth level monks get an Extra Attack- I mean. another extra attack. This one’s on your action. You can also turn any unarmed attack into a Stunning Strike, letting you force a constitution save on your target or they get stunned for a round. Great for cheesing bosses! You can even use focused aim to spend ki points to increase your attack roll, turning a miss into a hit. maybe.
9. Monk 6: As a sixth level monk your Ki-Empowered Strikes lets you consider your fists magical in terms of overcoming resistance, which makes sense given your anti-demon skills. You can also let out a Searing Arc Strike as a bonus action if you attacked with your action, spending at least 2 ki points to cast burning hands to deal a little fire damage. for each ki point spent above 2 (up to half your monk level) the spell’s level increases by 1.
10. Monk 7: Seventh level monks get Evasion and Stillness of Mind, letting you shrug off fireballs and charming/frightening effects respectively. The former is automatic and makes all your dexterity saves better, while the latter takes an action to remove those effects with no save required.
11. Druid 4: At fourth level of druid you get a Wild Shape Improvement, letting you turn into creatures of a higher CR as well as ones who can swim! You also pick up the Crusher feat from this ASI, rounding up your strength and powering up your fists. once a turn, if you hit a creature with bludgeoning damage, you can push them 5’ in any direction to an empty space as long as they’re not more than one size larger than you. also, any critical hit you score that deals bludgeoning damage gives advantage to all attacks against that creature for a round. It doesn’t increase damage, but punching someone across a room is cool as hell.
You can also Produce Flame, mostly because there aren’t more fitting cantrips to grab this level.
12. Druid 5: Fifth level druids get third level spells like… actually there aren’t many we want this level. Daylight’s cool though, shine your mirror all over the place, dispel magical darkness, it’s nice.
13. Druid 6: A sixth level stars druid can receive a Cosmic Omen proficiency times per long rest. When you finish one, roll a die. On evens, your omens for the day let you react to add a d6 to a creature’s attack roll, save, or check. On odds, the opposite happens, and you can subtract a d6 from those rolls instead.
14. Druid 7: At seventh level you can use 4th level spells like Divination to get answers directly from the gods themselves, all for only 25 GP! Like most futury spells, this decreases in accuracy the more you use it in a single day, but it’s still pretty neat.
15. Druid 8: Eighth level druids get another ASI, so bump up your Dexterity to actually have stronger punches. You also get another Wild Shape Improvement, so now you can fly. But that’s (probably?) not in character.
16. Druid 9: Ninth level druids get fifth level spells, so now you can Commune with Nature and engage in Scrying, so you can see things that aren’t even in the future! Seeing the present doesn’t sound quite as impressive, but it’s a lot more useful.
17. Monk 8: Use your last ASI to max out your Wisdom for the strongest visions and lasers. It’ll also increase your AC, which is nice since we’re still kind of in the middle of summer.
18. Monk 9: Ninth level monks get an Unarmored Movement Improvement, letting you run up walls and over water, as long as you end your turn somewhere solid. FGO battles don’t move around much, but it’s a nice flex.
19. Monk 10: At tenth level, your Purity of Body makes you immune to disease and poison. You’re so old, modern diseases just don’t know what to do with you. That makes sense, right? Eh, good enough.
20. Monk 11: Your final level of sun soul monk lets you make a Searing Sunburst as an action, creating an exploding ball of sunlight in a 20’ radius, forcing a constitution save on anything in the area and dealing radiant damage. The base sphere is free and deals 2d6, but you can spend up to 3 ki points to increase it by another 2d6. Your lights are usually more beamy, but you’ve got a ton of mirrors to work with. Just totally spies it and arrange them so they’re all shining outwards, and boom! Lightsplosion.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
Monks are naturally fast, and with your bonus speed and teleportation from your mark so have some insane Mobility options. And of course being able to run up walls and over water doesn’t hurt either. Chase people down, or stay away from them. Either way you’ve got a good shot at doing it.
Even if some is faster than you, or they can fly, you come packed with a ton of Ranged Options you can freely spam to keep them under pressure. Your monk features are free to use normally, and you get a bunch of free casts of guiding bolt too, giving your friends a better shot at taking your enemy down as well!
While I know it’s not really in character, mixing wild shape with monk powers is super fun. You get extra speed, extra AC, and you arguably can shoot lasers even while a squirrel. I mean it’s just as impossible as a human shooting lasers out their hands, anyway.
Cons:
While you can get away without using ki points that much as a sun soul, you’ll still be using ki points aplenty, and with only 11 per short rest to work with, it’s a lot less than a full monk.
As a sun soul you also don’t deal much damage, at least not in one go. If you need to deal burst damage, you’ll have to rely on your spells or your ki points, both of which are in short supply.
Despite your melee options, your low HP means you probably shouldn’t run into combat headlong. At least, not without backup.

Chapter 3: The Market is an Exciting Place
From a distance Ume sees Matsu get approached by a suspicious looking man and decides to follow them, in case Matsu is in danger. Matsu is not the one in danger.
Read it on AO3 - or read it here:
Unlike Matsu, Ginta and Otake dropped by Ume's regularly from the start. Ume watched Ginta come and go, each time listing the jobs that people had given him so far. That boy was unstoppable: the morning after they'd arrived he had already put up a sign saying "Odd Jobs" and started running around town, seeking people who needed help in any way whatsoever and were willing to give compensation of any kind.
Otake also continued the way she had lived in Edo - minus the kidnapping - and did nothing productive at all. Which is what she deserved, Ume kept telling everyone, as if they would argue. To Ume's great joy she dropped by at his place every day for a bit of conversation, a bite to eat and a drop of that wonderful sake he had found. After which she liked going for a walk, or for a soak at the nearby bath house. Or both.
On his way to the market Ume would often find her in front of seemingly random people's houses, socialising with whoever lived there and anyone eager to participate in the conversation. Generally the chat looked light-hearted enough, but every now and then her new acquaintances were ranting at her, or appeared to be in need of some comfort. Seeing the emotional kind of person talking to Otake always made Ume restless and he got the urge to step in. Just his looming presence would often be enough to make people back off. From experience he knew Otake didn't really want his help, so he resisted the impulse.
Ume saw all sorts of things whenever he went shopping. Ginta was often there, weaving through the crowd with packages, with tools, with baskets full of a wild variety of things, or sometimes with nothing but haste. Ume made it a game to guess what task he'd been assigned and when Ginta came by later that day Ume would secretly award himself points if he got it right.
Matsu wasn't a strange sight to him either, of course, but one day he did witness something unfold that caught his attention. He saw Matsu down the street and a relatively young guy with a plain appearance came up to him from behind. Even from the distance Ume could see that the stranger was rather flushed with nerves. He reached out and tugged on Matsu's sleeve to gain his attention, then quickly let go again. As Matsu turned, Ume was unable to see his expression, so was unsure if he welcomed the company. His posture never changed, though, and after a short moment, the man walked away from the crowd and Matsu followed.
The sight filled Ume with unease. Something about the unremarkable air of that fellow made him highly suspicious. He returned the vegetable he had been inspecting to it's basket, and dashed after the pair, who at that point vanished into a side-street. When Ume reached the corner and peeked around it, hoping not to be spotted by Matsu and his friend, he just saw them turn into another, narrower street. Ume carefully followed until they reached a dead-end alleyway that was virtually abandoned. Inching up the corner he could hear a voice that was not Matsu's.
"... hope I interpreted that correctly and that we could... try doing it more than once."
The young man had a soft, but clear voice. It was rather nicer than his appearance, despite it trembling a little. He must have been very nervous.
"We had a deal," there was no sympathy in Matsu's reply. Just a coldness and rigidity that Ume had not heard in a long time.
"Yes, I know, but-"
"Nothing changed," Matsu interrupted his pleading companion, "are we done here?"
"Something did change," the man called hurriedly. Remembering himself, he added in a volume so soft Ume could barely hear him: "I have feelings for you."
This confession didn't entirely surprise Ume. He knew about men who were attracted to other men, even if he himself couldn't relate to it. Every now and again he could appreciate a man's body from a distance, sure, but feelings? He didn't really know that was a thing going on between guys until he met Matsu. Something in the way Matsu behaved when it came to Yaichi.. Let's just say he got a feeling that Matsu wanted to be close with Yaichi and didn't necessarily see him as a friend. Ume never sought confirmation, of course.
Although it did seem like men like that were cursed to have their love stay unrequited, because Ume was pretty sure Yaichi did not feel the same way about Matsu, and this dude was about to be denied affection as well, judging by Matsu's demeanour so far.
"No, thank you," despite predicting Matsu's rejection, Ume was struck by the tone Matsu used here. It was his merchant voice: not unkind or particularly indifferent, just efficient. Whatever happened between the two, for Matsu it was just a transaction between two people that had been completed.
The young man gave no audible reply.
"Goodbye," Matsu uttered it with such a finality that Ume knew he had to move it. He walked to the end of the side street, where he suspected Matsu would go, and waited there just around the corner. Matsu emerged from the street by himself. He spotted Ume immediately.
"Hi," Ume greeted him, jovially.
Matsu held eye contact for a bit, as if trying to discern what Ume knew. He said nothing, then walked away from Ume, the way they'd come. Judging by Matsu's leisurely pace, Ume figured Matsu wanted him to catch up. He did so.
He looked over his shoulder to see if the poor reject had emerged from the alleyway yet. He hadn't. While they were still in an empty street, Ume decided just to be straight with Matsu about what he'd overheard.
"I followed 'cause I was worried about you, but dang," he chuckled, "that poor bloke."
"We had a deal," Matsu repeated, "he shouldn't have expected me to change my mind."
It kind of felt like an invitation to inquire further. Or like an order to shut up - Ume wasn't really sure.
Ume and Okinu had been talking about this actually. Until Masa came around, it was very normal for the Five Leaves to steer clear of any questions, anecdotes or opinions that were too personal. They knew barely anything about each other's past and even their feelings about whatever they dealt with as a gang were largely off limits.
And all of that just started to feel really stupid the more the Five Leaves went through together. Especially when Yaichi's past finally caught up to him and the gang was in danger of being arrested themselves. Ume knew he wasn't the only one who was dying to know the truth about Yaichi when that happened, even though he alone ended up demanding an explanation.
So although it could absolutely backfire, he wanted to follow Masa's example from now on and just.. ask.
"Change your feelings about what, exactly?" Ume was pretty sure what the answer would be, but he wanted it out in the open. If Matsu really didn't want to talk about it, Ume knew he just wouldn't, and that'd be fine too.
In an attempt to be casual about it, he gazed off in the distance. Matsu was quiet for a hot second, and it made Ume nervous. He started to kind of regret not maintaining eye contact.
"Sex, Ume," Matsu then told him in that businesslike tone from before.
He wondered what was going through Matsu's mind now. It was about the shortest reply he could've given and he didn't give the impression that he was about to give any more details. Ume didn't understand how Masa just spoke his mind so easily. It felt extremely invasive.
"Right," Ume said stiffly, staring ahead. He didn't really know how to reply to that. "What I thought."
"Did you?" Matsu asked, his voice dripping with incredulity.
"Yeah, it was obvious," Ume said, gloating a little, "He was talking about 'doing it' and 'feelings.' To be honest I thought only girls fell in love so quickly, but then again, maybe guys like that are more feminine?"
"What kind of stupid logic is that?" Matsu glared at him, like it had been a personal insult. Ume wasn't going to get into an argument about whether or not Matsu could be lumped in with "guys like that." He didn't know anything about what happened between Matsu and Yaichi, so instead he focused on the part about the girls. He was fairly certain about that at least.
"Isn't it common knowledge that girls are more easily swayed?"
"What about all those assholes who sleep with a prostitute once and swear it's true love?"
"Are you a prostitute?" It kept getting easier to pry, especially if it was to avoid a complicated discussion.
"No, just horny," Matsu snapped, like he was ready for this conversation to be over. Ume considered for a minute if he wanted to comply.
"So what's that deal you keep talking about?" he asked anyway. Being nosy feels kinda good actually..
"Why, you wanna get in on it?" Matsu replied, without missing a beat.
Ume reflexively stared his friend square in the eye. Matsu met his stunned gaze with a gently mocking smirk and Ume's heart skipped a beat. He averted his eyes again instantly. He was glad that he wasn't a blusher, because that suggestive remark and the smirk - coming from Matsu of all people - really threw him off.
He found his mind involuntarily going.. lewd places. More disorienting yet was that, as he tried to think the seductive, scantily clad Matsus away, he noticed he wasn't exactly repulsed by them. He'd be lying if he said he didn't know that Matsu was a handsome man. He was conventionally attractive and - if he wanted to sell you something - very charming. However, he had never thought of Matsu as sexually desirable.
Right?
"That's not what I meant.." the emotions Ume was going for were exasperated and amused. As soon as he said it he knew that could not have been what it sounded like, because it felt like an epiphany. He produced a slightly bemused bark of a laugh, and added: ".. but maybe?"
As they walked out of the side street, onto the busy market, a number of people turned around at Ume and Matsu to see where that alarming sound came from. To ignore them, Ume halted and followed Matsu with his gaze, until he stopped walking as well a moment later. Matsu returned his self-conscious look with an expression of surprise and curiosity Ume hadn't seen on him before. Neither of them said anything for an awkward second.
"Not opposed to it," Matsu then declared, with a straight face. Matsu sometimes presented his jokes the exact same as the things he said in earnest, so Ume waited a dazed second for Matsu to show any sign of insincerity or jest. It didn't come.
All the same, Ume decided to respond with a bit of a chuckle. An ambiguous one. One that could mean either "that's funny" or "I'm cool with it."
"As long as you don't expect me to fall for you," Matsu added nonchalantly. Now that had to be a joke.
"Hah! Please don't," Ume grinned.
For the first time since he spotted Matsu and the man in the crowd, Ume looked at his surroundings. Everyone was going about their business in a way that seemed kind of wrong, considering Ume just lived through a really bizarre ten-ish minutes. He half expected everyone to be a little impulsive and randy too. That's when Ume realised that this weird little flirting session had given him a bit of a high, because as this thought crossed his mind he felt himself deflate and tumble back down to the real world.
This is a bad idea. They hadn't actually agreed on anything yet. He could still pretend that all of this playful banter had been just for shits and giggles, like their usual prickly ribbing tended to be.
"Got some work to do," Matsu said before Ume could start backing out of the deal they hadn't yet made, "I'll come round for a drink later."
Ume didn't reply and just watched Matsu walk away. He'd address it later. Or never talk about it again - that was probably the best option.

Thorough dissection of KAGEISEN ROADSTER
this is the strongest ever Roadster
Roadster racing cars are called Freshman Races. It's a small FR that doesn't cost a lot, is running a lot in gymkhanas, and has plenty of racing parts. It's a good material to challenge motor sports. However, the roadster introduced here is a little different. It is truly a unique machine that should be called a great challenge.
Photography: Takashi Takeda Photography: Shunichi Moriyama Editorial Department
It's still in the maturing stage, but it's one to expect
It is a unique machine among all the racing roadsters. Kagei Sen means Tokyo Science and Arts College. The school offers a variety of courses related to automobiles, and this machine was created as part of the racing attack course. And I'm actually participating in the race, but it's great that the place for that challenge is the JGTC, that is, the All Japan Championship.
The instructor, Toshihiko Nogami, is a former Mazda Speed staff member who also works as a driver for this machine and loves racing. This class is led by Mr. Nogami's experience and passion, but I heard that racing is not a "bad road," and that Honda's participation in F1 also had the purpose of developing human resources for its employees. Because it is a certain amount, the effect must be great.
We chose the Roadster as the base because it is a unique car like no other.
The main reason for this is that it is easy to use, and of course the small size and low center of gravity is also a big point as a base machine. In order to load more 13B rotaries, the layout of the exhaust, etc., has a balance with the fuel tank, which is compact and does not take up much space. As a result, it became a “real racing car” with elaborate construction such as left-hand drive and inboard suspension.
Of course, these have the meaning of studying as teaching materials, but they are also effective because they are actually fighting in practice. From a purely fast-paced standpoint, the short wheelbase leaves some stability concerns, but it's an advantage on technical tracks, and the low center of gravity due to the open space is an advantage. If it is the same engine, there is hope that it will be faster than FD.
So far, he has not been able to start in Round 3, and although he ran in Round 4, he was forced to retire due to damage to the oil cooler. Currently, we are steadily repeating test runs, so I am looking forward to the future when it is finished.
ENGINE&SUSPENSION
Push rod suspension for rotary engine
The 13B peripheral port uses Weber Alpha's electronically controlled injection, which uses the exhaust pipe of the 787B. The elaborate inboard suspension is a damper for the RS race machine that I had on hand.
This seems to have happened in order to make use of the front push rods from the Mazda 253. The rear suspension unit fits in the trunk. The degree of freedom of setting performed by changing the lever ratio is large.
COCKPIT
of the layout from problem to left-hand drive
Due to limited space, an 80-liter fuel tank has been added to the rear, but in order to keep the high exhaust of the rotary from approaching, a tunnel is provided at the lower right end to accommodate the muffler. This is also because the exhaust of the rotary is on the right side, so it is a left-hand drive. The dash does not retain its original form, and the interior is equipped with additional bars. Pedals are RS.
AERO PARTS Are these Aeros coming soon?
The hardtop is made of carbon. Rigidity is also improved, and the weight can be reduced by nearly 10kg compared to normal. Considering the air resistance, it is said that the top is good. Front bumper, spoiler, fender October with mirrors to be released at the end.

pre-note: i'm not interested in complaining or insisting that this website shouldn't change. i want tumblr to be profitable and to grow, and that's going to involve changing things so more people will use it and understand it. i have been using this website since 2011, i recommend joining/rejoining tumblr to my friends whenever i can, and i've even bought socks and a mousepad from the shop LMAO. i have some genuine advice and things to consider that could help tumblr and i am offering all of this for free with no expectation of return.
~
i truly believe that if @staff @changes fixed the "because you follow #tag" feature, it would solve a lot of the issues that new users have when coming to the site.
currently, this feature:
- puts a disproportionately low number of posts from followed tags on the dashboard
- repeats the same posts over and over instead of providing new content from the tag.
these can be fixed by:
- instituting a % value for how much of the dash is from the followed tags. i would suggest that this percentage is higher if you follow very few blogs, and lowers as you follow more individuals. for someone like me who follows 400 blogs, i think as many as 1 in 15 posts could be from a followed tag.
it is important that this is not algorithm based. users only see posts from the tags they follow. i would hope that you've gathered how anti-algorithm your current userbase is. please do not alienate us.
as a middle ground on that issue, i would suggest adding suggested tags to the menu of suggested blogs that appears on the right side of the dash. that suggested blogs feature is one of the best changes this site has seen IMO, and has really helped me find more people to follow. implementing the same this for tags will get more eyes on more blogs and increase time on the site.
encouraging users to follow tags (or "join communities" if you want a fresh coat of paint) and actually putting a variety of posts from those tags on the dashboard would improve the experience for creators and get more eyes on their work without tumblr having to guess what a user is interested in.
- not showing the user multiple copies of the same post if it is from a followed tag.
i recommend keeping the presence of duplicate posts from individual blogs for multiple reasons. 1: a post fundamentally changes as more people add tags, replies, and reblogs; if the post disappears into the void after you see it once, you won't see any of this beautiful creativity and community discussion. 2: spam reblogging is funny sometimes. 3: if it's been a long time since you've seen a post, it can be fun to see it creep up again.
the key is that this repetition is because a human person liked the post enough to reblog it again.
~
it is ESSENTIAL that users do NOT see content that they did not ask for on their dashboards.
yes, algorithmic suggestion is a feature on other social media sites. even on those sites, the users complain about this and ask others for ways to turn it off and view a chronological following feed. i have personally seen this on twitter and reddit. this will be much worse with the current tumblr userbase, who is hostile to algorithms.
~
i have more thoughts on this matter but didn't want to join the flame war. on the low low low chance that someone from staff sees this my DMs are open for free consultation from a long time average user

hello tumblr!
this is not the first line tag game, which i should really be getting around to. this is also not one of the many wips i've mentioned and should be working on.
this is a thing i wrote this morning for an hourish instead of getting up for the day, and upon reaching the end, realized that i dislike it! but i don't want to waste the effort i put into it, and so.
UPDATE 2023/4/3: I no longer hate this! Stay tuned for me to fix it up and post it officially at some point.
the premise is a post i saw on instagram that was reposting something from either twitter or tumblr (i do not recall which, and i cannot find the post to give credit, which distresses me greatly). the overall gist of the post was that when you are awake feeling lonely or scared or terrible at 2 to 4am, to know that bakers are awake too, and they are making delicious treats and there are good things in the world. apparently, i decided to make that be ambiguously platonic zelink.
bon appetit
The bell jingles familiarly above her as Zelda yanks the door open. One hand on the basic, rectangular metal handle, the other braced against the metal doorframe against the wind. She avoids the glass by rote, a habit built after realizing just how many handprints the pane must collect and how annoying that must be to clean day after day. She brings with her a gust of late-winter wind speckled with snow and dashed with the urban bouquet of cigarette smoke and exhaust, and the squeaks of her damp sneakers against the vinyl tile floor.
It’s 4:23 in the morning. The corner donut shop won’t even be open for another hour and a half. But he keeps the door unlocked for her.
The desperate knot of loneliness and fear winding through her chest and threading her organs loosens when she closes the door behind her and takes a deep breath through her nose. The fragrance of warm dough, the must of yeast. Chocolate, sugar, cinnamon. At least five different fruits boiling down into thick jam fillings. The scent would be delectable and heavenly on its own for any customer, but for her, it carries a different, deeper comfort. Classical conditioning.
Link pokes his head out of the doorway to the kitchen. He clutches a stainless steel baking sheet clamoring with eclairs in oven-mitted hands. “I heard the bell,” he says. It’s unnecessary; they both know he heard the bell. But she appreciates it anyway. “Take a seat, Zel, I’ll be out once I’ve set these on the rack.”
Link’s little donut shop has a bar, five chairs in a row along a laminate counter. They join up to the left of the massive display case, which glimmers half-full with apple fritters, glazed donuts, a small mountain of cinnamon-sugar donut holes, and a dozen other varieties of the best way to eat fried dough. The bar thing certainly isn’t common for a donut shop, but Link makes it work. Sometimes she imagines that he used to be a bartender before he opened this place, and missed the longer talks with customers so much that he added in a place where they could linger. She plops herself down on the rightmost chair, the one closest to the kitchen door.
It takes five minutes, but Link pops out of the kitchen. This time, the wooden tray he holds is populated with sausage kolaches. He uses a flour-dusted hip to push the sliding glass out of the way, and slots in the tray next to the fruit-filled kolache variants.
“It’s good to see you, Zel.” He throws her a smile through the glass as he kneels down to rearrange some chocolate cake donuts that have fallen just slightly out of alignment.
Seven visits ago, he would have led with a sympathetic Rough night?, to which she would glumly nod. Twelve visits ago, it was a Hey, sorry, we’re not open ye—oh, honey, take a seat at the counter. No, go ahead, it’s okay. It’s okay. I’m just getting set up. I’ll be right back out. Stay as long as you want. Now, he just knows: the night is rough, and she is here, and in half an hour or so, she’ll be okay.
His hands never aren’t full, and he’s hardly ever out of the kitchen for longer than two minutes at a time. Their conversation comes in stops and starts and stutters. But every time he’s behind the counter, they talk. He follows up on how her grad school applications are coming (poorly). She asks him what seasonal flavors he’s planning for when spring finally comes (kiwi).
On his fifth pass, he hands her a cinnamon sugar cake donut, still piping hot from the oven—her favorite. They both laugh as she juggles it between her fingertips and gets sugar everywhere.
By 5:47am, her traitorous, poison-spewing brain has moved on to happier pursuits. The deep-seated fear that she will live a very long life and she will spend it alone and unloved, and the few people that have ever cared for her will forget her and make better connections than she could ever offer them, has settled. As she puts her hoodie back on, Link tells her to take care  and that he looks forward to seeing her next time, and she knows from the look in his eyes—warmer than his ovens and deep-fryers combined—that he truly means it.
She exits the shop as the first impatient customer enters, and the bell chimes her a hopeful goodbye.

If you’re looking for a healthy, natural and “greener” way to optimize your hydration game during the long, hot late summer months, seasonal, locally grown fruits offer a great alternative to sugary sodas and artificial sports drinks. Many summer fruits contain a high-water content as well as a diversity of vitamins and minerals, so increasing your intake will help keep you well-hydrated while delivering a host of important nutrients with every delicious bite. Melons, in particular, are especially rich in water content and are coming into season about now, just in time to quench the thirsts of multitudes of parched farmers market shoppers. So, right on cue, here are some ideas on how to incorporate the top three most common melons you’ll currently find at our farmstalls into your daily hydration habits. Cantaloupe Cantaloupes most likely originated in the Middle East, but get their name from Cantalupo, Italy where they were widely cultivated during the 1700s. Cantaloupes are a super hydrating fruit as they are comprised of 90% water while being chockful of antioxidants, including beta carotene and lutein. The fruit also delivers almost 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vitamin C. When choosing a cantaloupe, follow your nose and pick the one that has a sweet, slightly pungent fragrance. My husband John and I compete in Ironman triathlons together. After a long, intense training session, we are looking to replenish lost electrolytes, calories, and fluid. As part of our post-workout regime, John whips up smoothies in the kitchen blender containing a 3:1 ratio of carbohydrates and vegan protein powder, specifically designed to help with rehydration and muscle recovery. Now that cantaloupes are in season, they are his go-to fruit for adding extra flavor, nutrients, water, and carbs (in the form of glucose, sucrose and fructose) to his smoothie mixology. John shares his “not-so-secret” cantaloupe recovery drink recipe with us here: •    1 scoop vegan protein powder (pea, rice, hemp, pumpkin seed) •    2 cups of cubed chilled cantaloupe •    1 cup blueberries or raspberries •    1.5 cups plain yogurt •    3 ounces of honey or maple syrup •    1 teaspoon spirulina •    6 ice cubes Canary Melon Canary melons are often compared with American footballs to describe their size and shape, while their bright yellow skin sets them apart from their honeydew cousins. The pale, delicate flesh inside belies their colorful exterior and is similar in taste and texture to that of Asian pear, but with extra tanginess. Like cantaloupes, canary melons contain 90% water and are delicious in smoothies, ice pops and sorbet. If you’re looking for a different kind of hydration experience, pick up a bottle of locally-crafted liquor from one of our spirits vendors to make a boozy frozen melon granita with. Canary melons are easy to spot in farmers market stalls this time of year – just look for the telltale daffodil-toned rind. Watermelon Just like its name suggests, watermelon is made up of 92% water, crowning it the hydrating superstar of the melon family. Because watermelon is also naturally high in electrolytes including potassium and magnesium, it can rehydrate you more effectively than plain water alone. You’ll find both the seedless and seeded varieties in our farmers markets. Contrary to widespread belief, seedless watermelon is not a genetically modified (GMO) fruit. Rather, it has been cross-bred or ‘hybridized’ to specifically select for the seedless trait. At a festive patio party in Brooklyn last summer, I had my first ever introduction to watermelon slushie. I couldn’t believe it had been missing from my life up until that moment! It was made from a simple concoction of ripe, seedless watermelon whizzed in the blender along with crushed ice and a dash of freshly squeezed lime juice, then served in a bowl made from the hollowed-out rind. Needless to say, John and I now regularly prepare watermelon slushies to hydrate with during our workouts instead of Gatorade and other sugary sports drinks. So be sure to drink from the cup of melon season while it lasts, as we'll all be feeling rather melon-choly once it's done!

Migraines affect people differently. The number, length, and intensity of our episodes, as well as our symptoms, are all distinct. Some are brought on by stress, sleep deprivation, and hormonal changes. Others are triggered by external variables including temperature, sound, scent, and light. The list is endless many business listings.
Many people discover that specific meals alter how frequently they have migraines. How can you determine your probable food triggers and what dietary changes can you make to stop attacks from happening again?
WHAT IS THE LINK BETWEEN MUGAINE AND FOOD?
Despite the fact that the exact etiology of migraine is unknown, evidence points to a number of chemical factors, including serotonin that might cause the body's blood vessels to constrict, causing the excruciating headaches. However, there is a significant knowledge vacuum in the area, necessitating a lot more study, especially with regard to triggers.
A healthy diet gives us energy, permits growth and repair, and aids in illness prevention. It also offers several health benefits. In a study published in 2021, it was shown that those with regular migraines experienced less discomfort and fewer headaches per month when they ate fatty fish, which is known to lower inflammation business listings.
Additionally thought to reduce migraines are the Mediterranean and DASH diets, which protect the brain from oxidative stress with foods like olive oil, green leafy vegetables, and almonds.
7 USUAL FOODS THAT CAUSE MIGRAINES
It seems that some particular meals can cause migraines. Below, we've provided a list of some of the more typical ones, along with advice on what to eat to prevent migraines, in the hopes that it may help you take control of your problem.
1. Artificial sweeteners
Synthetic sugar substitutes known as artificial sweeteners are used to sweeten food and beverages. They can be found in desserts, prepared foods, canned foods, chewing gum, and more and have almost no calories. Aspartame and sucralose, two artificial sweeteners, have both been linked to migraines in certain individuals.
What to try instead: Natural sweeteners include honey, molasses, maple syrup, fruit juices, nectars, and nectars. Adding honey to your caffeine-free tea, drizzle it over your cereal or using it as a component in a variety of meals can all have positive health effects free business listings.
2. Old-age cheeses
Tyramine is a naturally occurring chemical that cheese's proteins break down into as it ages, and some experts think it may be connected to migraine and headache symptoms. Blue cheese, Swiss cheese, parmesan, brie, and cheddar are some examples of aged cheeses.
What to try instead: Fortunately, we have access to a wide range of cheese, so you can swap out aged cheese with fresh, spreadable alternatives like cream cheese, ricotta, and goat cheese. However, a lot of dairy products include a lot of saturated fats, so consume them in moderation.
3. MSG-containing foods
Monosodium glutamate (MSG), a food ingredient, is frequently used to improve flavor. In addition to canned veggies, soups, and various processed foods like frozen dinners, seasoning mixtures, and quick noodles, it is frequently used in Asian cuisine. There have been numerous instances of MSG-containing foods having negative effects, including migraines and headaches.
What to do in its place: There are many meals that are migraine-friendly but don't include MSG; nevertheless, if you're searching for anything to replace it with to enhance the flavor of your meal, you might consider beef stock, shrimp, or mushrooms.
4. Canned and processed meats
Similarly to aged cheeses, processed and cured meats have significant tyramine content. Avoid anything that has been smoked, salted, cured, dried, canned, or has added preservatives, such as pepperoni, chorizo sausage, salami, prosciutto, pastrami, hot dogs, bacon, and pâtés.
What to do in its place: Switch to some tinned mackerel, salmon, or tuna in place of processed and cured meats; these foods are known providers of omega-3 fatty acids that can lessen the frequency of migraine attacks.
5. Fermented food
Tyramine is once more the culprit in meals that have been pickled or fermented. This group includes pickles, kimchi, sauerkraut, and miso.
Try this alternative: Many veggies are pickled so that we can eat them all year round. Instead, eat seasonal, fresh vegetables, and if you love Japanese food, swap the miso soup for some delectable fish sushi!
6. Citrus drinks and fruit drinks
Our bodies benefit from the important vitamins and minerals, fiber, and antioxidants like flavonoids that are present in fresh fruit. Oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and limes are examples of citrus fruits that some people discover to trigger migraines in them. Researchers don't fully understand why this is the case, but it may be related to a sensitivity to, an ingredient in citrus that has been linked to food allergies.
Instead, give strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, cherries, apples, and watermelon a shot. They're fantastic foods for migraine recovery because they're anti-inflammatories and reduce discomfort.
ALSO WATCH WHAT YOU DRINK
Although it isn't really a food, caffeine tops the list of migraine triggers. The most popular forms of this natural stimulant are found in tea, coffee, and cocoa as well as in carbonated beverages and energy drinks. Caffeine withdrawal and its ingestion in beverages can both cause migraine symptoms.
Congeners, which are alcohol's metabolites, have also been connected to headaches. It is believed that dark alcoholic beverages like brandy, whiskey, and red wine have a higher concentration. Alcohol relaxes the blood arteries, which increases blood flow to the brain while also dehydrating us.
What to do in its place: Decaffeinated hot beverages with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant characteristics can ease migraine and headache symptoms, including herbal teas with chamomile, ginger, and turmeric. These drinks might also lessen tension and anxiety, which are migraine triggers.
HOW TO MANAGE YOUR MIGRAINES
You'll be one step closer to successfully preventing and controlling your attacks once you understand what foods seem to be bringing on your migraines. Having trouble identifying dietary triggers? Consider keeping a thorough meal journal to help you spot trends and consistency.
Explore our To Better Days patches for the neck, forehead, and temples if you're looking for natural migraine relief. They have been shown to minimize the duration and intensity of migraines as well as shorten the time it takes to recover because they contain a blend of vitamin D, ginger extract, chamomile extract, and lavender powder!
