I can’t have an icemav rec list without including this fic, THE icemav fic of all time!!!! I adore slice of life, definitely my favourite genre, so getting 30 years of icemav development and love and ups and downs written as perfectly as they are here obviously catapulted this up into being my fav icemav fic. Please give it (and the sequels) some love!!

Karrde's Fandom Friday Recs #1 (08/19/22)

So if anything has become apparent with my recommendations over the last few weeks, it is that I am weak when it comes to the Star Wars ladies. Adi Gallia, Aayla Secura, Hera Syndulla, the list goes on. But I audibly gasped when I saw this Depa Billaba art by @bethanyeliseart. The highlights and expression and color palette are all top notch, but the detail put into her hair style was something in particular that really just impressed the heck out of me (as an artistically challenged human that bows down to those that can actually produce these works of art). I just really love this piece so much and had to rec it this week.

Callie POV

Ever since she came up from solitary, she was being followed.

When she got up at dawn and stood for count, worked out on the yard, counted heads and passed shit back and forth between cells, something was watching her.

She knew it wasn’t real.

She wasn’t fucking crazy.

She hadn’t birthed a monster the second she locked eyes with the truth down there. There was nothing crawling the ceiling, waiting to drop and wind its tentacles into her pores. Nothing watching her with one searing, unblinking eye.

She knew it but that’s the feeling that followed her these days, in bed and in the showers and on the rec floor. She kept moving. It followed.

So she moved faster. Distraction was the key. If she sat in one place for too long, thought for too long, acknowledged its presence-

She wasn’t fucking crazy. She knew it wasn’t real.

It didn’t help very much.

Weight in her hands felt fantastic. The sky above, a welcome sight. No monsters waiting up there. Just heavy grey clouds. The barbell came in and out of view. Her arms shook.

Bliss. Strain. Nothingness.

“Need a spotter?”

A face, upside-down and unfamiliar. “Nope.”

She hoisted the barbell toward the sky again but the woman grabbed its center between Callie’s hands and pressed down, hard. Callie barely stopped it from crushing her chest.

“How ‘bout now?”

Her elbows threatened to buckle but she kept quiet - she wasn’t about to go crying for a guard. The woman let Callie struggle another agonizing second before releasing the pressure and helping the bar back into its rest.

Callie rolled off her back and pulled herself up tall, although this woman was bigger than her. “You picked the wrong girl to fuck with.”

“Just getting your attention,” she shrugged. “I heard you’re a big deal around here. I wasn’t sure you’d give me the time of day.”

“I’ll give you a lot more than that.”

The woman broke into a disbelieving smile, like she knew something Callie didn’t, but she was all flushed in adrenaline now and not in the mood for games. She balled her hand into a fist and widened her stance.

“Holy shit,” the woman breathed. “You really don’t recognize me, do you? I mean, I guess you’ve screwed over a lot of people along the way, but, wow.”

Recognize? Callie looked closer despite herself. Choppy black hair, standard-issue ribbed tank top, bags under her eyes. Tiny little marks on her ears and nose. Former piercings.

No fucking wonder she hadn’t recognized her.

“Anka,” she breathed. “Sorry it took me a sec, but you look like hell.”

Anka’s arrest after Peter died had been less than a blip on her radar. She turned herself in, after all, for outfitting Callie with her murder weapon. But she was new here, to this block, at least.

“What the fuck are you doing here?” she asked. “No way you got twelve years for that little joke shop.”

Anka smiled, but it had gone sour - no longer the playful, enticing thing it used to be. “No, not for my shop,” she said as a guard moved toward them, eying their seemingly friendly conversation, because nothing could be more suspicious.

Callie took a step back and Anka started down the length of the track. Callie followed, only close enough to hear Anka’s low voice.

“I’ve been in and out,” she said. “Murex block, until now. The kind of people I traded with get a little twitchy when one of us lands in the system. Scared you’ll start naming names.”

“So I’m not the only one you ratted out?”

“It was a matter of time, Callie. If I didn’t get ahead of it, they’d have traced it back to me eventually.”

“Pure self-interest, then?” she needled, unable to stop herself. “Nothing like a guilty conscience?”

Anka surveyed the yard with her hands in her pockets, coming to a stop where all the guards were at least fifteen feet away. “I have a proposition for you,” she murmured.

Always the prudent businesswoman. Well, if she truly didn’t have an axe to grind over the whole murder weapon thing? Ladies in here didn’t tend to get chatty for no reason.

“I’m listening.”

Anka glanced around to ensure no one was listening. “The most powerful object the world’s ever seen is buried underneath the school,” she said, her voice low, dripping secrecy. “My dealer in Cairo told me and his word is gold. It’s always been there, miles below the ground: the lost orblex of Delphinia Delaney.”

Callie managed to keep a straight face.

For like, one and a half seconds.

Anka raised an eyebrow at her laughter. “People have killed for much less than I just gave you.”

“Oh, no, I’m sure they have. And what exactly are you hoping to get in return? Money, cigarettes? You wanna get fingered under the table at rec time?”

“I want you to go get it. The orblex. Get it and use it.”

“Oh. Of course.” She shrugged at their surroundings, tickled by this bizarre conversation. “I’ll hitch up my safari boots and get right on that. Shit, Anka, we’re in supermax, if you haven’t noticed. And why in the world would I care about some dusty old piece of shit buried in a cave that probably doesn’t even do anything?”

“You really don’t know.”

Static ripped through the air. Five minutes, announced the garbage-compactor voice.

Callie rolled her eyes. “Delphinia Delaney’s a fairytale,” she sneered. “She didn’t have a ‘seventh field’ of magic. Those idiots believed in vampires. If you ask me, Deedee just knew how to put on a show.”

“The seventh field changes everything,” Anka insisted, like she hadn’t heard a word Callie’d said. “It has power over all the other powers. It’s the end, and the beginning.”

“Okay, movie trailer voice-over. Lay it on me. What’s the damn thing do?”

Anka leaned in close and whispered into her ear what the damn thing did.

And then Callie understood. Why she’d ever risk everything just to get to it. Why Anka wanted her to. Why, with that kind of power, she could reasonably expect to be able to bring reality to its knees.

She wasn’t supposed to think about the future.

But how could she not when it was morphing into strange, shocking, fantastic new shapes before her very eyes?

There was no question as Anka backed away from her to watch the realization settle in across Callie’s face.

Fuckin’ hell. 

Now she was gonna have to break out of prison.

It’s been about five months since I last did a set of STAR WARS recs, which I’ve had my ups and downs with the fandom in that time, but one thing that hasn’t wavered is that this fandom has been absolutely amazing at producing fic all this time and I literally started with about 300 fics I wanted to rec and this takes maybe 20% off that list and, of course, I read more this morning, so now it’s back up to like 305 because THIS FANDOM KEEPS BEING REALLY GREAT ABOUT PRODUCING THE AMAZING FIC. I really do appreciate that, whatever other problems this fandom has, there are a lot of really great people here, too, who are doing some fantastic work and sharing their incredibly talented creations with us. As someone who loves the space fandom created, who finds meaning in the community that pops up around our ridiculous bullshit of a source material (I love it, but it’s such delightful ridiculous bullshit, that’s what endears it to me so much, I LOVE YOU FOR BEING RIDICULOUS, STAR WARS!), it also means a lot that there have been so many incredible people making the world a little better through their writing, through their art, through their good-hearted commentary, especially in a time when a lot of us really need some good cheer. @ddae208e - ahh I love Sara so much. She writes for NCT, Stray Kids and more. Her work is honestly so cute. She writes such good fluff and angst, and she’s so so talented. Her work is so enjoyable to read, I love them a lot. Definitely an underrated blog that I highly recommend checking out.

@kesmonsterwrites - Kes is such a hard worker, she writes for so many groups, and is definitely a blog I recommend following! I love reading her work, all of her writing is absolutely amazing!

@milky-mochi - please check her out. She’s a multifandom blog who mostly writes for TXT, but she also writes for X1 and BTS. She’s honestly amazing, so so talented. She’s writing a Yeonjun series right now, and it’s honestly so cute, and I really love her writing style.

oh yeah i have some recs. these are all w/ lucio because the only valerius one i’ve read that i’ve really enjoyed was the one i already recommended over here. the list gets fluffier the further you go down, its not all explicit!!

The Phantom of Vesuvia by shepavellan ( @shepavellan ): Okay so I don’t read a whole lot of multi-chapter fics because I’m always afraid of accidentally stealing ideas for my own fics (not that this can’t happen with one shots but it feels less likely, you know?). But I started reading this before I even started working on any fics so it’s the one exception and it is a glorious exception. I love this fic. I love Phantom of the Opera, and this fic doesn’t just copy-paste the musical, but instead adapts it into a plot that could work for the universe we are given with the Arcana. 

the Arcana Pursuits series by peony_princesa: very explicit but um the first one-shot in this series is what made me realize I wouldn’t mind having a go w/ goat lucio, so isn’t that the best recommendation I can give??? Essentially,,,, porn with the slightest plot. 

anything by @vesuviannights (goes by the same name over on AO3): look. listen. listen. we all know… i am a sucker for dom!lucio and this is the only person giving us CONSISTENT DOM!LUCIO CONTENT and its what i need in my life. 

desire by txmaki ( @adi–writes ): romantic/sexual tension is my favorite thing in this world. and I love the idea of lucio pining over the apprentice because of the pure appeal of a man who is used to getting everything as soon as he wants it being unable to get exactly what he wants but working hard to getting it and earning it (more or less). This is another multi-chapter but it’s only 4 chapters so it would be a relatively quick read!! 

Softly, In The Morning by Duchesse: Everything written by this author is good, lots of shorter one-shots, but this one in particular is my favorite because it’s very soft and fluffy. And I love the soft and fluffy. 

A Celebration to Remember by deputyrook : um so I don’t like parties and this is exactly what i imagine my situation being if i lived in the arcana universe and attended the masquerade, with a little bit of self-indulgence in that fantasy. but yeah this got that fluffy stuff.

Republican Era Dramas with English subs - a biased and incomplete list

I once made a long period cdrama rec post but excluded 20th century dramas. Well, now I feel like making a list of all Republican era dramas I am aware of that have English subs so here you go. Sharp suits and sharper dresses, lots of war and mayhem, and some cool music.

Note: some of them skirt the communist era or interlap. Oh well... I have italicized the ones I have not seen.

All Quiet in Peking - This one is supposed to be a heavy duty political and personal drama. I am not sure there is any romance. Good reviews but haven’t seen it yet. Set in late 1940s/early 1950s (so part Republican, part Communist). It does have Wang Kai, for those among us who are more shallow.  Subbed on youtube.

Battle of Changsha - I love this one! Part family drama, part romance, part war epic, this is written by the same people who wrote Minglan, aka the best-written drama of all time, according to me. The story revolves around the close-knit Hu family, with the protagonist being  Hu Xiangxiang, an idealistic school girl. Before the story ends, she will have to cope with family joys and tragedies, the terror of war and discovery of love with a military officer played, as always impeccably, by Wallace Huo. It’s a nuanced, wonderful story that I cannot recommend highly enough. Subbed on youtube.

Cage of Love - set in the early part of the Republican era, this involves family grudges, love triangles, mysteries and some colorful clothes. Hawick Lau looks scrumptous. Its a silly drama, but a fun one, and not too long. Subbed on youtube.

Destined to Love You - OK, I bailed out of that one because it was too anachronistic but I might get back some time because Joe Chen as somehow the only female member of an all male military academy is cracky fun. Four Women Conflict - God, how do I love this trashy drama. Ady An is pure heroine mistreated by pretty much everyone but the awesome Feng Shao Feng in this early Republican drama. Anything bad you can think of happening, happens. But the OTP is so perfect. This one might be hard to find with subs because the site I used to pull it from a decade ago doesn’t exist any more, but they are out there somewhere.

Girl Wearing a Tassel Earring - I literally know nothing about it other than it somehow involves spies. I’ve seen subs floating around, but frankly, haven’t chased them.

The Lady and the Liar - I haven’t finished it yet but what I saw, I loved. Our heroine is a poor street performer, whose paths cross with a powerful gangster whose life she saves and who falls for her madly. She turns out to be a long-lost heiress who ends up in a trainwreck on the way to reunite with her long-lost family. Someone else claims her identity and the smitten sexy gangster swoops in on the lovely amensiac and claims she was his fiancee. Ooooh. What tangled webs we weave...Hawick Lau and Tang Yan never looked better. Subbed on kissasian.

It's late, and the cold apartment combined with their rumbling stomachs had finally chased Steve and Tony out of Tony's bed and into the kitchen, determined to find something to eat. It's going on one in the morning, and the whole place has a kind of ethereal quality to it, like time has stopped somehow and it's just the two of them, alone in the world with the empty fridge and Tony's quiet kitchen.

Tony’s injuries are relatively minor, mostly just bruises from where he fell, but still Steve worries at them with a washcloth, muttering under his breath about ice packs and tea.

He drops a kiss to Tony’s shoulder, right in the middle of a smattering of freckles. He thinks for a minute about how few people have probably done that, how he’s one of a set number of people who knows Tony Stark has eleven freckles on his left shoulder, and feels something in him settle.

hdm!au. steve isn't sure what to make of his new, daemonless teammate iron man. he's even less sure what to do with tony stark and his strange, albino daemon. tony, on the other, is just trying to make sure his secret identity stays secret. it'd really help if steve stopped confessing his feelings for tony stark to iron man.
