Hi. I'm hoping you can help me find this fic. I can't remember the name or if I read it on Fanfiction or ArchiveofOurOwn. The plot is Moriarity is back and Molly has to hide out at Sherlock's flat. Sounds like a lot of stories, I know, but Molly had a female best friend (original character) who kind of hated men and was very down on Sherlock (and vice versa). Mycroft was in it. I just remember the writing and characterizations all the way around were excellent. More than 20,000 words I think.

After scanning the Post HLV stories looking for ones with Moriarty where Sherlock & Molly are also flatmates, I only found one story, Drown the Heart by naninator (ff. net, 17 chapters, Post HLV).

Then I looked at Moriarty as a villain fics set Post HLV (since that seems the most likely time period for Molly to be hiding out at 221B. There are a LOT lol. Here are the titles of the fics over 5 chapters long in case any of them ring a bell:

Yee and ALSO haw!!! You know, for someone who loves cowboys as much as I do, I haven't actually written a whole lot of cowboy-related fic. That said, I have been poking at a rewrite of Wanted, one of the earliest fics I posted on Ao3 way back in 2012. I've always liked the concept (Cas using Dean's cowboy obsession to clumsily seduce him) but the execution is about as hamfisted as Cas' flirting.

So here's an excerpt from the second chapter that I've been rewriting. Hopefully I'll be done with it soon--I just have to finish reworking the final chapter and then do a quick readthrough/edit, so it's just a matter of setting aside the time to work on it.

A year ago, if someone had told Dean that someday he’d be in a bad mood because he hadn’t heard from his best friend in a while, he’d have laughed in their face. For one thing, the entire concept of him having a friend at all is kind of a joke. The last few times he’s attempted to have anything approaching even the most casual friendship it’s ended in blood or tears or both. For another, he’s become so used to accepting that it’s not remotely in the cards for him that sometime in his early twenties he just stopped letting himself get attached to anyone in the first place. So the idea that he’d not only lower his defenses enough to make a friend, but that he’d also let himself become so reliant on that friend's presence that he’d actually miss them when they weren’t around? Laughable. ..and yet. It’s been almost three weeks since his impromptu spaghetti western movie night with Cas, and he hasn’t seen him since. Hasn’t heard from him, either. And yeah, Dean could pray or call and Cas would probably show up looking all windswept and frowny like he always does, but that's not the point. No, the point is that Dean knows for a fact that the guy doesn’t have anything better to do right now. His "services aren’t required in Heaven at present" after all. So he's just... gone. For no reason. Off who-knows-where doing who-knows-what while Dean worries that something has gone wrong, or that Cas just... doesn't want to hang out with him. That maybe, despite the fact that Dean has come to consider him the best friend he's ever had, Cas doesn't feel that way about him in return. That to Cas, he's still nothing more than a charge. A task. Something for him to handle. Whatever the reason, his complete lack of contact is getting on Dean’s last nerve. He’s pissed about it. (Really, he’s hurt, but admitting as much, even to himself, would open up an avenue of thought he’s not really sure he’s ready to walk along, so for now he’s gonna stick with the much more manageable anger that he’s used to.)

my biggest obstacle as a writer is that i desperately want to be a popular and well-known fic author, but my main fic inspiration comes from characters most fans don’t want to read fic for, or ideas that go against popular fanon/characterization and so are doomed from the start. i end up feeling paralyzed and like i can’t write the unpopular ideas I want to write, because i hate knowing i could have done better by writing something with broader appeal. but whenever i try to write solely for numbers i lose motivation while the halfway through the fic. so i end up unable to write anything and feeling miserable because of it.

i want to see my unpopular ideas come to life, but i don’t want to see my fics crash and burn and keep missing the chance to create fic that people really love. so most times, i don’t write anything, but i hate that i’m so hamstrung by my own anxieties. i so desperately wish i could create one of those extremely well-known long fics that most people love and always rec everywhere, but i feel like i’m completely incapable of that. i know i should be writing for myself, but i’m greedy and want results and for people to like my fic, however unlikely that is. wanting to write my ideas but knowing i’ll limit my audience if i do is something that’s constantly on my mind. do you have any advice for me?

My biggest question after reading your ask is simply: why?

You're very clear about wanting to be a popular writer. You want to write a fic that lots of people talk about, and you want people to know who you are. Have you examined that desire at all?

You say that the things you actually want to write are not the things that will make you a popular author. That means you have a choice:

write things you don't care about with no guarantee of becoming that Big Name Fan or

write things you love and enjoy spending time writing and know that BNF status will probably never happen.

Writing fanfic is really not a great way to try to become popular. It's an even worse way to try to become "famous" in any kind of way. So dig into what it is that you hope to get from the "broader audience" that you could appeal to by writing something you don't really like.

Are you trying to get a feeling of being liked? Respected? Looked up to? Do you want to be someone other fans look to for advice or for setting the tone of the fandom? Do you want love? Power? Some kind of community connection? Recognition of the effort you put into your works?

Some of those things likely will require you to pretend to be someone you're not. You might even manage to write that one big fic that gets thousands of comments and tons of people talking about it on tumblr (or wherever else you care about, social media-wise).

Others you can probably still get by writing your "unpopular" ideas but seeking out your fellow fans. It will take more legwork to find them and you'll need to be willing to be the first one to reach out for a conversation, but it can definitely be done.

I'll leave it up to you to decide what you actually want, anon. But take your time and scrape off the top layer of shiny thoughts about popularity first. Then you'll be able to see what's underneath.
