unique dr ideas i haven't seen many people mention
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
y2k futurism
during the turn of the millennium, hopefulness and curiosity were abundant. many creatives took to envisioning what the 2000s would hold. this take on futurism is my favorite, and i've always been drawn to it since before the y2k resurgence of the 2020s. shifting to a futuristic reality that's based on this aesthetic sounds so fun.
aliens/intergalactic societies/space travel
imagine a world in which you have access to planets and galaxies other than Earth, inhabited by diverse, highly intelligent alien species. the best part is all the alien races are at peace with one another and allow travel and immigration to and from their planets. you have the chance to see the exotic sights, sounds, smells, and tastes the galaxy has to offer.
minecraft/roblox/"blocky" realities
wouldn't it be trippy to shift to a reality where everything, including yourself, is literally comprised of blocks? just throwing that thought out there into the ether...

Become an Advance Reader for Duck Prints Press!
Tumblr media
Reviews are essential for showing prospective readers that we’re publishing awesome books that they want to buy and read. We’re looking to recruit an active group of people who post reviews of our work, and to do that we need your help! We’re offering Advance Reader Copies (ARCs) of one of our projects: A Truth Universally Acknowledged, our most recent anthology, featuring 21 short stories and 20 full-page color artworks inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, but made deliciously queer!
How it works: You see this post. You think, oh, I love reading! I love leaving reviews! I want to join the Duck Prints Press Reviewer Program! Then, you go and read the rules for our Reviewer Program. And, if everything there sounds like something you can do, you fill out the form, and – we’ll be in touch! Even better: this program isn’t only for A Truth Universally Acknowledged, and isn’t only for “advance” titles. Our reviewers are encouraged to claim titles that are currently released, too, to help build up a robust collection of reviews of Duck Prints Press titles!
Requirements:
You must be over 18 years old.
You must be prepared to post reviews on Goodreads and/or Storygraph.
You must also post the review on the appropriate listing on the Duck Prints Press webstore (for advance titles, you’ll have to wait ’til we list them there).
Upon acceptance to the program, you must join the Duck Prints Press Book Lover’s Server.
Reviews must be at least 100 words long must and engage with the actual content of the work being reviewed.
Reviews must be left within 6 months of claiming a title, or you will be removed from the program (you’re welcome to rejoin later!).
What isn’t Required:
That the reviews be positive. Reviews are for readers. We require that reviews be honest to your own experience of the work, not that they be glowing.
That you post the reviews to social media. Doing so is definitely a bonus, but you don’t have to.
That you associate yourself publicly with the review-leaving (beyond using a valid Goodreads and/or Storygraph account). As in, you don’t have to say, “I, (your name here), reviewed this book” or link your book website accounts with your existing social media presence or anything like that, nor do we request any demographic information beyond confirmation of your age.
That you purchase anything. Absolutely no purchase necessary!
What You Get:
An e-book copy (ePub and/or PDF) of the work you’re reviewing. We do not provide physical ARCs.
After you post your first review, you’ll get a coupon for 10% off a purchase from the Duck Prints Press webstore!
For every ten reviews you post, you can claim a freebie sticker from among our sticker offerings, if you want. (You’ll have to provide a snail mail address to get this, of course.)
A community of fun book-lovers to hang out with! (You can get that even without joining the ARC program, though – our Book Lover’s Discord is open to everyone.)
We’re accepting applicants for claiming A Truth Universally Acknowledged ARCs through February 21st 2025. On the 23rd, we’ll randomly select 25 of applicants to receive ARC copies of A Truth Universally Acknowledged. Everyone else will still be entirely welcome in the program and invited to start with a different, back-catalog book or story to review.
So… those are the basics. Interested? Go read the full rules, then apply to be a Duck Prints Press ARC reader TODAY!

do you like messy, sexy queer books?💕
do you like queer books that aren't all fluff and rainbows? that explore those messy, dark topics, yet still keeps humor and joy and love + a happy ending?💕
do you like all of the above in fantasy?💕
let me introduce to you THE NIGHT AUCTION...for which Advanced Reader Copies are now open!
From now until June 15th, you can email me at [email protected], and i will give you the file to read THE NIGHT AUCTION for free, in exchange for leaving a review.
(trigger warnings for past abusive relationships and references to sexual coercion, as well as an inherent power imbalance in a society of extreme bigotry and oppression.)
(preferably on goodreads) this will massively help the book gain traction by release day, when people see that it already has shiny new reviews! blurb below.

For a gemeyes, love is a prison. What happens when it could mean freedom? Aric is a gemeyes, a powerful and heavily regulated mage in the second class of Vadare society. His whole life, his only goal has been survival—not dreams, and certainly not love. When an old debt comes knocking, Aric is forced to turn to The Night Auction, a club where gemeyes go to be auctioned off for dates. There, he is bought by Kyrell Tierwood, a first class lord who’s kinder and handsomer than any Aric has ever met. Kyrell’s main draw is his wealth, which Aric needs to pay his debt and protect the family secret. Aric’s plan is simple: seduce the money he needs out of Kyrell and then leave him. It’s not love, it’s business. However, Aric didn’t count on his seduction turning into something real. As Aric and Kyrell navigate coexistence, Aric is torn between two worlds: the love he’s fostering with Kyrell, and the secret he will do anything to keep.
(boosts much appreciated!)

Just finished: The Amendments, Niamh Mulvey. I was sent an advance review copy by picador. It took me a while to warm up to this one, but in the end I really enjoyed the way Mulvey delivers complex difficult emotions using straightforward language, not wallowing in grief but also not flinching away from some of the hardest conversations around birth, death and religion. And I do have a soft spot for Irish writers, and multi-generational stories

Advance Reader Copies (ARCs) just dropped on NetGalley for WHEN THE TIDES HELD THE MOON!
The Erewhon Team and I put ourselves through the gauntlet to make sure these ARCs included finished illustrations (which is why I’ve been so sparse on Tumblr of late, though I promise I will catch up here soon!), and I cannot wait for readers to meet Benny, Río, and Morgan’s Menagerie! I am rooting for everyone who applies for an ARC to get one, and hope those who snag one will love this book as much as I loved writing it. 💙🧜🏼‍♂️🇵🇷🌊🎟️🗽🎡
NetGalley members can request an ARC as an early reviewer at the link below:

No one is talking about the frankly alarming number of Draco/Hermione fanfics being published as romance novels this year like there are 3 that I know about but how many more are lurking out there

what's it like working at a bookstore? i'm very curious!
oooh i love this question. i've been in my shop for nearly four years at this point (and before this i worked in a research library for four years, which has been an interesting point of contrast!) so i have a lot of thoughts.
main thing: when people think about working with books, they think about working with the books they like. obviously i get to do that—i am the resident expert on the poetry section, i spend a lot of time with the fantasy/sci-fi, i have my own staff picks shelf—but i also need to be able to hold a conversation and be knowledgeable about books that aren't in my wheelhouse. people from all walks of life with vastly different reading tastes (and abilities) will come into the shop, and i need to be able to help them find what they're looking for. sometimes this means that i get exposed to really neat work in genres that otherwise i wouldn't have explored! but sometimes it means that i need to know what's going on in romance novels these days even though i do not read them.
when i worked in the library i had a very solitary role that rarely involved interacting with patrons. bookshop work is a retail job so i am talking to people All The Time. sometimes this is really delightful—helping kids find dinosaur books, for example—and sometimes people are rude, or tell you that they can get the book cheaper/faster/whatever on amazon. today a woman said she doesn't like reading books about poor people. a lot of folks my age wander in and you can tell that they basically stopped reading after middle school because that's the only section of the store where they recognize the books on the shelves. i always feel sorry when that happens. but the majority of customers are very serious readers, and it's heartening to interact with them on a daily basis.
finally, there's something about tending to the books that appeals to my nature. both making sure that they're in the correct spot and also that they look nice (the library did not care if they looked nice). however: sometimes i do miss the rigid catalogue system of the library. there was always One Place where the book was supposed to be. in the bookshop, a particular novel might be tucked away or on display or otherwise floating around in like seven different places. it's a treasure hunt sometimes. a treasure hunt where the customer is getting mad at you.
this is getting long so i'm going to stop here but these are some of my main thoughts. i do love working there! it does vex me greatly from time to time but i would rather be vexed about books than most other things.
