I drew this extremely quick comic back at the start of july, before anyone had gotten their books early, and I had assumed we were all going to be seeing it around the same time. clearly that's not how it worked out and I've already seen a couple of... things... (not to mention I'm getting it on the 26th- whoops) which kind of minimizes the point of posting this, but I figured I should at least get it out of my drafts.

What do you think the compatibility of veganism and communism are, how would veganism slot in? I know the average Usamerican and westerner eats just an absolutely untenable amount of meat, but I'm skeptical about the practicality of trying to completely eliminate it.

as i am fond of saying, socialism is not about consumption, but about production. it is absolutely true that the current level of meat production is completely ecologically unsustainable--but 'veganism' doesn't come into the equation. veganism is a personal choice about consumption habits, not a political program. a reduction in meat consumption would take place under socialism due to the simple fact that, absent the profit motive, there would be no sensible reason for a communally owned system of agriculture operated by worker democracy to devote the amount of land and labour that are currently devoted to expensive and inefficient livestock farming. how the 'consumer' of the meat feels about it basically does not matter at all--under any socialist system of production there will simply be less meat.

Honestly REEDA's main design in my head fits Ford's lab, so it's a very retro cassette-futuristic style like you've illustrated. Think: how did people imagine the future was going to look in 197-something. All Commodores and IBM and thick plastic etc.

Ford's lab in mtb is designed with that exact aesthetic in mind, so terminals and things like this were at the forefront of my mind:

These types of terminals are primarily in the mainframe room that Reader goes through to access the lab. It's all set up with things like the above. Whereas REEDA's central screens in the main body of the lab look more like the ones in The Forbin Project:

Except they're a mix of both of those aesthetics, so they're weirdly long CRT monitors suspended in a similar layout to the above!

On the topic of Declare:

A little while ago, on a whim, I prompted several different chat LLMs with a line from the Arabian Nights that has special importance in the novel:

O fish, are you constant to the old covenant?

In the book, this is used as a sign between members of a secret group, and there's a canned response that members are meant to give to identify themselves. (Like "I like your shoelaces" / "Thanks, I stole them from the President.").

I thought it'd be funny and impressive if one of these models responded with the canned phrase from Declare: that would have demonstrated both a command of somewhat obscure information and a humanlike ability to flexibly respond to an unusual input in the same spirit as that input.

None of the models did so, although I was still impressed with Gemini's reaction: it correctly sourced the quote to Arabian Nights in its first message, and was able to guess and/or remember that the quote was also used in Declare in follow-up chat (after a few wrong guesses and hints from me).

On the other hand, GPT-4 confidently stated that the quotation was from Jubilate Agno, a real but unrelated book:

When I asked Claude 3, it asserted that the line was from a real-but unrelated-poem called "The Fish," then proceeded -- without my asking -- to quote (i.e make up) a stanza from its imagined version of that poem:

It is always discomfiting to be reminded that -- no matter how much "safety" tuning these things are put through, and despite how preachy they can be about their own supposed aversion to "misinformation" or whatever -- they are nonetheless happy to confidently bullshit to the user like this.

I'm sure they have an internal sense of how sure or unsure they are of any given claim, but it seems they have (effectively) been trained not to let it influence their answers, and instead project maximum certainty almost all of the time.

The thing about forged medic hands is that in my personal headcanon, I feel like all forged medic hands baseline should act like Pharma's Luna-1 hands; not the ability to transform into (basically) anything, but because from what I can recall, Pharma is the only instance of a TF medic who isn't just holding tools in his hands and operating that way, but he literally has panels in his arms opening up while his hands are transformed into another tool so he's operating like 3 or 4 tools at once and I think that's so fucking cool.

Especially since they're alien robots whose most prominent feature is transforming so it really feels like having hands/arms that can split or transform into a bunch of tools like a hyper-advanced Swiss army knife should just be like, baseline. It seems like a much better way to take advantage of worldbuilding based on alien robots instead of having forged medic hands just be like, normal shaped hands but extra speedy/flexible/graceful or something.

Just look at the way that real life robotic surgery systems have multiple arms with different tools-- because the fact that they're machines means they're not limited to human physiology's limitations of movement and using hands to perform.

Makes way more sense that forged medic hands should be able to transform their fingers into different tools or have extra limbs stored in their forearms to hold even more tools. Plus it would lead credence to Ratchet's claims that forged hands have certain abilities that constructed hands can't replicate. (After all it makes sense that building medic hands, as opposed to just finding someone who was forged with them naturally, would be really complicated and resource intensive, so in Functionist Cybertron no one would bother building cold constructed hands to the same standards as forged medic hands bc they're not seen as having the same value.)

Granted if all forged medics had similar capabilities to Pharma's Luna-1 hands, it'd be hard to make Pharma's Luna-1 hands stand out as distinct. Then again the fact that "they can transform into anything" seems like it would be extremely special considering that you can only pack so many transformations into a single pair of hands. Plus, in Lost Light, Pharma-Adaptus is shown being able to transform his hand into a freaking blaster which means due to Luna-1/Adaptus' blessings or whatever, his hands don't just hold sets of doctors' tools but can turn into things completely unrelated to the function of medicine at all, including apparently multiple kinds of weapons. Quite literally infinite transformation.

Does N eat meat? I think he doesn’t since he has a choice, but he gets the circle of life well enough to not do anything stupid like force his carnivore Pokémon to be vegan, and he’d eat meat in a survival situation.

Most if not all of the meat in the Pokemon world has been indicated to come from Pokemon that practice autotomy, such as Slowpoke tails, Klawf and Crabrawler claws, etc. At most he might've tried to stay away from meat under some false pretense of Pokemon being hurt much like battling, but otherwise I think he'd be fine with it.

Details:

Advanced Tech Labs is the department/sub-unit of the Hunter's Association that assigns missions to Deepspace Hunters. Before any mission is assigned, they consider each Hunter's Evol, overall capabilities, and efficacy. Outside of urgent mission, Deepspace Hunters are allowed to pick and choose which assignments they'd like to accept.

All mission assignments can be accessed via the virtual user interface for missions, a feature of the Hunter's Watch. Advanced Tech Labs is also said to receive and process mission partner requests.

haha i'm FREAKING OUT because apparently my surgeon's office did NOT receive my lab test results and note clearing me for surgery and they need it by MONDAY and i called the doctors office and they said they'd get notice to the care team and send it and would mark the request as urgent but i swear to god if any of this fucks up my surgery date i'm going to explode
