Lift us from these sands.
Part 18 of Adventure Log+ (sequel to Link's Thought Brambles - best to read in order, also on ao3). Warning for strong language, violence, and minor character death. Trigger warning for intense fire. Edited 4/8/25 for typos. Disclaimer: The content of this chapter is fiction only, and is not intended to contain advice or instructions for surviving hazardous conditions.

The Prayer of the Dawn Hylia, preserve us. Lift us from these sands. Keep us with the dawn. In these lofty skies, Make of us a temple of hope That when we descend, We may breathe new life into the surface's green fields, Its flowered meadows, and its vast waters. That we may scale its mountains and seek out the wonders of its caverns. That we may treat all life with reverence, Cherishing not only its preservation but its freedom, For all things must balance. What you raise will one day fall. What we cultivate will one day wither, and all that lives will one day die. And on that day, we rise once more, though our body sinks. Hylia, preserve us. Lift us from these sands. When the bonds of flesh release us, May your light illuminate our path.

Thepain- eyes on it. Glowing like the lynel aaaaand wait.
Wait.
What was the thing about twelve years?? âNot sure youâre so good at counting. You havenât been with us twelve years.â Oh s#$& or HAS HE?
âTwelve years is all the rest I received, thanks to you.â
âPretty sure I didnât wake you up.â Thatpain chattering-
âMy master did.â
-itâs Reidaâs⊠teeth.
âPretty little Princess, lying in bed. I didnât harm a hair on her head.â
What thepain hell does that mean?
âNever again. Not that it will matter. This time, it will finally end.â
Master.
âI khH- do not recall your presence in my bedchamber.â
Master, it is him.
Thatâs- I can FEELpain his weird smile, is this- is this some kind of telepathy, Fi, is it like you?
Like yet not alike.
âYou donât remember much, from what Iâve heard.â
It is DEFINITELY not-Erl, he heard her SAY that.
âI wonder how it happened.â
And- here comes thepain skeleton slow, slow-
âHow did you survive?â
-still holding Reidaâs sword, watch the hell out of everything, Link, holy s$&%pain
âHow did your power suddenly arrive?â
it doesnât matter if Huiru died or not, heâs up, heâspain up somewhere anywhere wherewherewhere ohf- skeleton! Canwalkthroughfire?
âOr- did it? Do you have power, tiniest Princess?â
? I donât- donât get it-
âWhere is your light?â
Her light? Ours? Zelda- keep- just keep moving back-
âI freely admit my confusion. I can be honest with you, after all.â
...
Whatthef$&#? âWeâre⊠not friends.â
âDead men canât spill secrets. Only organs. Well, and bile. Blood. Lymph. The things that make you so repulsive on the inside.â
âMake US repulsive?â painHow does ANYONE say that so totally matter-of-fact?
âIn the extreme.â
painâSo, what- do you not have organs?â He sounds dead inside.
âMy insides are far cleaner than yours.â
âWant me to check?â OOH, Link, what the hell are you doing PROVOKING him?!
.
It⊠went awfully quiet. Except Reidaâs teeth.
painburns
That tightness in his voice- itâs weird, what is it? Like heâs straining. Nerves? Stress? Fear?
Fear?
He doesnât want to getpain near us.
Is he⊠afraid of us?
Did I just SCARE him? ââŠSeems like that worries you.â
âFfff-hhhh. Ffff.â
Hot breath on my neck
âI was content to let you live without her.â
(SAVEZelda)âNOT happening.â
âShe was dead already.â
âMg-?â SHHH Link donât give away that you havepain no idea what the f#$& heâs talking about, Zelda'snotdead, she's right behind you-
âYou no longer mattered. I could rest. Thatâs all I want. Peace.â
Doesn't seem great with definitions, either. âThis isnât peace.â
âThis isnât what I want.â
âInHHdeed?! What do you wish for then, foul creature?â
Zelda.
âYou-hh- massacred the inhabitants of this plain! That isnât peace!â
Pissed off Zelda.
âIt is when itâs over.â
Dear Hylia, he didnât deny it!
âPhhhh-â
Sheâs so pissed off sheâs hissing-
â-hhh-kh-hh.â
âOver. Thatâs what I want.â
-andpain creaking the hell out of that bowstring.
âBut you pull me here- and the most frustrating thing is this may all be for nothing. Ripped from rest for the likes of you. Do you know what I think?â
âŠNo idea but Iâm sure going to give away as little as possible.
pain
âI think the way has already been paved. The power laid to rest, as it was meant to be. I think you are nothing but a lie.â
Heâs angry, must be, why bother telling us that otherwise, whatever it means?
âYouâd have used your power by now if you werenât. Wouldnât you, tiniest Princess?â
Tryingpain to get a dig in somewhere, but too scared to come over here and fight.
Afraid of us.
Ofpain me?
âŠLetâs find out.
âIs your hero also a lie?â
Itâs like I just FELT him bare his teeth at me and ohhh itâs coming anyway isnât it even if I WASNâTpain about to do what Iâm doing with your hand, thatâs right Zelda, my hand, come with me, forward, if we run he just burns uspain but if heâs SCARED OF US maybe we can push his ass back if we freak him out.
Do not underestimate him.
What happened to not losing hope? ForwardFORWARD hesees
Do not lose caution, either, master. He- must have some aim.

Sheâs⊠not the onlypain one struggling.
Iâm shaking so bad. And she⊠REALLY hurts pressed on my back like that in its very-possibly-entirely-skinless state.
But Iâll take itpain. Sheâs alive.
âD- id- you see?â
ââŠSee?â
âThey- theyâre there.â
âThey- who?â
âHuiru. Reida. They- below us.â
Can I-
painPAINNo. âI- I canât see, canât twist around.â Too risky withshakingpain you riding. âCan only see ahead.â I shouldnât beshaking surprised, theyâre dead already, they probably donât care if they fallâŠ
How⊠ever⊠manypain painfeet that is. That.
shakingHoly
Yeahpain, Fi, that 48 feetshaking or painwhatever Iâd done before? shakingDoesnât even sort of compare to thispain. Ifpain we fall. Evenshaking if we painstart to sink, if painwe speedshaking up as we go paindown, itâs so far-
Cease to fear what lies below, master. Fly while you can, and mind the flames.
Woah, sheâs painright. shakingstopshakingThose fireballs (canâtstop) theyâre moving almost like â like soap bubbles. Firebubbles. Moving, and weâreshakingpain at least partially at the mercy of the wind.
Andpain thank Hylia- thank YOU Hylia- for having that mercy on us. painThe wind, lifting us up.
Thereâs a weirdshaking smile on your face, Link.
You canpain unpack it later.
For now, painsteer the glider. Beshaking between all that floating flame.
âLink?â
âItâs alright. Just making sure we donât hit anything.â
âHit-?â
She probably canât see the bubbles either.
âLink, you- are⊠trembling.â
ââŠYeah.â
And there it is, Link. She has painstrength enoughshaking to try and hug you, even though sheâs already basically hugging youpain, and nuzzling in your hair.
âI love yhou-khHh- oh. Iâm sorry.â
âHeh. Donât be sorry.â painâI love you, too. JustâŠâ shaking âhang on for me, okay?â
Nodding against me
And shaking like crazypain.
shakingJust like me.
Itâs- up to you, now, Link. painHow to get her to safety. How to get theshaking two of us somewhere we can actually deal withpain our wounds, and rest, and painmaybe eat something, and get fricking word to the castle aspain fast as possible. Margil, Beraya, Daile⊠theyâllshaking⊠all think weâre dead.
The dragon. Itâspain â huge. And FAST. Now that weâre paincloser I can see its speed and itâs phenomenal(canâtstopshaking). Looks like itâs just gliding gently along like us but itâspain racing through the air.
Thatâspain⊠got to be making some wind, too.
Itâll pass us, wonât it? Very soonpain. If weâd been earlier or later, painwe couldnât- it wouldnâtâve been here to give us that boost.
(Thank you).
The updraftâll stop at some point.
Steer- left- painthere- try to stay near it as long as possible. Maybe-
If I angle forward?
âHh!â
âItâs okay- trying to pick up some speed.â Sheâs scrabbling again-
âYou- do you think- we can make it- to the other side?â
Thatâs a really, really long way. Andpain- where would we land?
What weâd really want is to go up, up, up, up as far as painpossible on that updraft.
shakingShe said theyâre below us â Huiru and Reida.
And- going down is NOT an option anyway. painBroken legs. Minimum. âIâll try.â
âHow- how can I help?â
Nuzzle her, Link. As best you can in this position. Who cares if it hurts. âJust stay with me. Hang on.â
Tighterpain. Good. Stay strong, Zelda. Please stay strong for me.
The dragon really is moving very, very fast. Catch up, Link, lean inpain and buildshaking as much speed and height as possible on that wind. You havepain your next goal, and itâs the cliff on the other side.
Fly with the wind, she said.
Who am I to argue with the Goddess?

Session 1
Day 1
The adventure starts as four humans wake up as PokĂ©mon in the Sacred Forest.  Upon waking up, they realize that they have woken up around a shattered statue. Three wake up but the fourth remains asleep. Being a FlabĂ©bĂ©, the asleep party member was easily attached to the tail of the Alolan Vulpix party member. Accompanying a Cleffa claiming to be from a nearby Guild, the humans-turned-pokemon ventured through the Sacred Forest searching for an exit. Upon reaching the exit, the group was attacked by a swarm of Beedrill. The group was quickly taken out and knocked unconscious, but was saved by two silhouettes using some sort of Psychic energy to dispel the Beedrill.Â
Upon waking up (except for the FlabĂ©bĂ© who has not yet woken up) the group sees that they are in some sort of building and are surrounded by PokĂ©mon. Cleffa greets them and then brings two PokĂ©mon, Tyrogue and Salandit, to escort them to the Guildmasterâs Room. The group enters and is greeted by two Meowstic by the names of Stella and Sterling. The two claim to have saved the party from further damage by the Beedrill. They tell the party that the Guildmaster wishes to speak with them. Unfortunately, the Guildmaster has fallen asleep. The Meowstic poke the Guildmaster until they eventually wake up and turn around in their chair. The Guildmaster reveals their self to be a shiny Ribombee by the name of Hibbee. Hibbee welcomes the party to their guild and then offers them a spot as a rescue squad, saying that by helping the guild out, they will have a roof over their heads, a meal once a day, and a community of fellow PokĂ©mon. The party accepts and is then led back to their sleeping quarters by Stella and Sterling.
Upon reaching their room, Stella uses Psychic to throw all the party members against the wall and threatens them that if they do anything to hurt the Guild or the Guildmaster, that they will be punished and pay. She also tells them that they are currently investigating why the party was in the Sacred Forest around the time the Statue was vandalized. Stella finishes by telling them all that if the guild were not in need of a tenth rescue squad, they wouldnât even have been accepted entry into the building. Sterling apologizes to the group for Stellaâs behavior but expresses similar concern for the groupâs relation to the broken Statue. They then leave but the party is then visited by the six guild workers, Tyrogue (General Help), Salandit (General Help), Exca the Excadrill (Job Posting), Alolan Diglett (Sentry), Cleffa (Assembly), and Igglybuff (Assembly). After quick introductions, the group is left alone to sleep for the night. In the morning, they will explore the rest of the guild as well as the nearby town, Treasure Town.Â
What lies in store for our adventurers? Will FlabĂ©bĂ© ever wake up? Are new friends and teammates on the horizon? Why are they all PokĂ©mon? Find out next time on PMDnD!Â
Quote of the session:
Stella: I donât know what this cocaine you speak of isÂ

Returning the necklace, finding Abramo and first steps in Avernus
(a log from the last three sessions)
After doing some minor tasks for the inhabitants of troutbeck the party went and searched for prof. Whitebecks necklace and encountered a morkoth under a stange little island out at sea. They defeated it in a though fight (they were not used to fighting magic useres yet) and returned the necklace to its owner. Where thy found out he had been involved with multiple students who found out about each other (one of them was the reason his necklace was lost since she thew it into the sea) and promptly dumped him (on said remote island). The party then broke into his office (because they couldnt find him anywhere) and ambushed him there. They then returned the necklace and he told them where to find her. The party took the short trek to her house atop a mountain. The party was then very surprised when they found Dr. Aramo in the body of a ten year old child wiht pink hair and blue eyes. Everyone immediately distrusted her (especially neema who had seen a pink haired girl in one of her visions looking out at a burning city). But they still told her about their wish to go to the nine hells. Abramo immediately seemed exited and insisted on going with them. So after a few days of preparations she lead them to an old deactivated portal. Luckliy she had the necessary spell and keys to reactivate it and so the party landed in hell where they were promplty surprised by some Abshai who wanted to bring them to their queen (Tiamat). Ashe opned up about Maphas and his parents to Curyn and Nemma and told them he was ready to die with Malphas should it be necessary. He is also struggeling with the fear of loosing his powers should Malphas be removed from his head. He was fuly prepared for the other two to kill or expell him from their party but instead they ensured him that should it come to that they would find a solution and figure something out. And then there was a long overdue very emotional hug. Then everyone decided it would be best if Curyn who has the best survival skill would take the trek across the mountains to get to the core of Avernus to find mad maggie to help them with transportation to the next level. But since the nine hells are not a level, continuous place she didn't end up where she wanted to go but instead halfway across the map in front of an old flying fortress. Everyone was dying to explore it since the map promised it was "ripe for plundering" Curny now had to rest and went into her shell to sleep a bit, so the others decided to make the trek across a fire-storm swept desert without her. This ended with Nemma, Ashe and Layla badly burnt and deciding to take a short resat and wait until Curyn reemerged to continue. The ispcetion of the old flying fortress revealed that the structure was long oout of use and that several mosnters had started making it their home (some slugs and big necrotic worm and some demonic vultures). Exploring the upper deck revealed that it was once the command deck and the party gained insight into how a functioning flying fortress might work. They also emncountered a transformed, very confused gnoll which they were heavily intrigued by. Starting to leave they heard a devil and his posse arrive on infernal machinery and decided to leave as quickly as possible. but they couldnt leave the secret of the gnoll alone. so they tied him up, took a safe distance on the carpet and dispelled his transformation spell, which revealed an ugly, mutated looking creature. They decided he was not interesting enough to be worth more of their time and wanted to leave, but at that time the leader of the arriving scavengers had spotted their carpet and since he didn't seem to want any witnesses hurled a flame at it.

Come Fly With Me - A Summary
Or: The Gang Robs Protostar
The Starchaser let down amid the jungles of Celestion, the clouds above heavy with rain and rolling with thunder. It was a gloomy day, the jungles lightened only by the lights from the ship and the fires of a crashed ship just at the other end of their little clearing.
âOkay, but how come the ship is on fire?â Jeremy Murdoch asked, sensibly enough given the situation. He was reasonably pragmatic for an exiled Cassian who seemed to spend at least fifty percent of his time inebriated.
"Yeah... I thought it crashed last year or something,â Lady Starheart supplied, but it was too late. The back end of the ship was not on fire and despite the fact it was covered in tumbling vines that should suggest it had been here far too long to be on fire the gang was away.
It wouldnât really do to be last on the ship, would it? Lady Starheart always ran freckled-face first into danger.
As the gang scrambled around like ants, trying to make hide or hair of this fascinating vessel the ever-sensible Morducai, with his oddly glowing pistols, waited down below. He was far too sensible to get caught in the trap, the trap which appeared to have sprung when rustling sounded from the side. Unluckily for Morducai he seemed to be wrong, and the little bot appeared to be harmless.
Bolo was a Chua, and Bolo was not wholly sensible. E excitedly poked around the little bot before announcing to the crowd, "Is just new Protostar bot. No bombs. Unless bombs come in original model." E couldnât seem to stop irself looking just a little disappointed with this fact.
"Aww, poor buddy," Bron said, taking a step up to have a look. The granok was always sympathetic to robots, perhaps because (with proper maintenance and unlike the humans around him) they could live as long as he could. "Must'a gone down with the ship."
The granok scraped some mud away from the bot. âYou look like an Isaac.â
The gang, with some intermittent bickering, and with the Isaacâs help discovered a door, its keypad indicating that it was even still being powered, at least a little bit. The red light waxed and waned over its face.
âOoh, power! Good news for us, probably.â Bolo exclaimed. Bolo was relentlessly positive.
"Hopefully," Jeremy muttered to the chua. He was not as relentlessly positive. "Unless there's turrets behind the door or something."
âIs that likely, with Protostar?â Seeker asked, it was possible he was the least positive person in Celestion at the moment, given the current company this was also extremely impressive.
"One advertising bot and nothing else is a bit weird though, right? Protostar shit is usually so... you know, protected,â Lady Starheart pointed out helpfully. It was all a bit weird.
At the door, Jeremy was having trouble. He had a special eye that should have helped him get in, as it stood all he managed was to explode the panel. That made things rather difficult for Bolo, who tried to reconnect some wires. E managed the wires alright, they shocked the chua so badly e ended up rolling down the stairs, smelling of burnt fur.
Jenny Brightmist had a laser, and as the usual ways of opening a door didnât seem to be working she tried that. Jenny Brightmist was an engineer, an excellent one at that, but even she couldnât seem to do much more than put a little dent in the thing. Protostar was not fond of being robbed but they also werenât immune to being blown up. The slightly weakened door coupled with a large number of explosives rendered the doors into pieces and revealed a treasure hoard of gadgets and gizmos, many of which were most definitely not for public consumption.
The hoard was enough to send Bolo into a dead faint but Yautja, the old draken, the clanlord of Mikros who was now the clanfather by default of the Starchaser, knew how to sort that out at least. "He'll come to. Watch this." He leaned down over the chua and said, lowly, "Morducai is touching your tools."
As the crew began to load up the goods, Bolo launched irself at the one-eyed man while Lady ran behind screaming, Â "Bolo! Bolo no! Yautja was just trying to wake you up buddy! Don't hurt his face!" She hesitated and helpfully added, "Or his dick!"
It took the crew a few hours to load up the hoard of equipment, above the sky rumbled with thunder and below the crew sat on the ramp, sweating, as the last few pieces went away. Isaac, who had helpfully followed along and beeped cheerfully was nowhere to be seen, an oddity that the crew may have happily overlooked had a heart-rending and panicked mess of beeps not sounded from somewhere in the woods.
Bron was off already, that soft spot for robots would get him hurt one day, and behind him Lady Starheart, whose soft spot for idiots would get her killed. From there it was a domino effect of sorts. Yautja followed along with Jenny, and then Morducai and Jeremy. Seeker and Bolo were smart, they stayed back, at least for the moment.
Isaac was in a clearing, found smoking and injured, its front panels gouged away. It sounded as though something stalked the woods around and Bron, helpful as he was, focused on fixing the droid. Lady Starheart called for Bolo to bring them supplies, something she regretted when the Chua appeared and, beneath the clearing, a crude trap door sent all but Morty, Seeker, and Jeremy tumbling into a cage.
The trapped gang came to with numerous injuries, a snapped leg, cracked ribs, an injured shoulder⊠perhaps the worst was Yautjaâs broken tail. Those were important to Draken, having it broken was a rather large tragedy. Still, none of them were in as bad a state as the bones around them, so there was still hope.
They lay in pain until helpfully supplied with medkits and a few beers from the safe men above. There didnât seem to be anything to perform a rescue with, either inside the ship or outside. And so, after an hourâs work at the top the three men disappeared and the injured five below were left in the dark, to ponder what had happened to the bones around them.
------
It was six hours or so, before anything happened. When it did it came in the form of a J-X3 Protostar Shipping Protection Unit, its shoulder-mounted laser cannons were decorated with red and gold leaves tied together with vines and it communicated toward the cage in a series of beeps. It looked like it might be an Edgar, possibly a Francis. It came with five other protection units, these ones smaller and flying.
âThis definitely how Chua expected to die,â Bolo observed. That was fair, now that it was upon them it seemed reasonable now they would all die this way.
Edgar/Francis tried to communicate, Bron tried to translate, they came to the agreement that what the bots wanted was the Starchaser and this was non-negotiable.
"Tell them they can get fucked,â Lady said after two abrupt a laugh. âOver my dead body and all of yours. Sorry Bolo, dude." She did sound apologetic about that but at least this way her mother would be wrong and she wouldnât be dying alone.
"That's a no from the captain, friend. How about we work something else out?" Bron asked hopefully but this was not a negotiation on either side. But Isaac was there and Isaac was helpful. It tried to point out the power core in the corner and may have succeeded then if Seeker hadnât appeared in another cave mouth.
The three men who had not fallen had been trudging all day, through miles of twisting caves, until they found a tunnel that opened here. And now, frustrated, Seeker has stepped out to try to negotiate. This may have been a poor decision given the jumpiness and unease of the bots, one fires and burns the manâs arm. It is not going well.
The bots descended into bickering, the one that shot Seeker even tries to offer him a pebble as an apology. It isnât going well. The pebble clatters to the ground. The bot looks upset if bots can.
In the cage Bron is just excited to see Jeremy, they are good friends after all. A few pleasantries are exchanged, an attempt to understand what is going on. Edgar (or Francis) points to the power core, it lies dead in the corner beside a powerless bot. An examination of the others yields an indication that theyâre all running low on power, their indicators are yellow and red.
Jenny voidslipped out of the cage, why she hadnât done that hours ago was anyoneâs guess but now she stood next to Morty, looking over the power core.
"Power core's fine,â Morty said âJust off. Looks like these bots tried to fix the damage to it and got themselves fried."
"Shame,â Jenny said without meaning it.
They got to work while the bots freed the caged group. They did look excited to be free at least, it was better than being in the cage. The bots seemed mostly curious about them, the bots hadnât seen people in a while, not living ones anyway.
On the edge of the room Jenny, Seeker, and Bolo were at work on the power core while Jeremy and Bron determined whose fault this was (Bronâs) and Lady Starheart expressed her happiness that Morty had not âStolen her ship and fucked offâ.
Things, it seemed, had ended well for the gang. They repowered the robots (who still had a cage full of bones it was best not to think about) and said their farewells to Isaac, who sent them off happily. And then, well, they were up in the air. Back home and safe.
Well, except for Bron who had a bomb around his neck, but that was very much a different issue.

Nitlios and Zoltan Are At It Again

Raanday, the 7th day of Senent â (The story of Diesa) â Diesa followed the feeling of the sword further into the dark woods. â Pretty quickly, she found the sword leaning against the tree, already dug up. â She ran towards it with laser focus and didn't notice she accidentally stepped through a shadow crossing into Shadowfell. â She found herself in a different forest, where all the trees are dead and everything is in black and white. â Almost immediately, she felt the sword telling her to get moving. â She traveled until she found herself outside of a large chateau. â Inside was a small picnic table with a man sitting at one of the chairs surrounded by undead butlers. â He explained that Diesa had entered a contract with him when she attuned to his sword, Zoltan, and she was in his service until said contract was completed. â He was, however, a bit light on the details. â It was then Nitlios noticed the crest of Torm on her helmet, he was confused. â Moments later, a flash of light came into the chateau and a Deva appeared. â Nitlios told Diesa not leave, and that he would be back. â Then he and the deva disappeared. â (The story of everyone else) â The rest of the group were deciding who should go and who should stay when Bibsy (drunk off his butt) stammered about how she's probably going to the sword where he buried it. â They found the sword had been dug up and was missing. â A quick investigation of the grounds appeared to show Diesa's footprints disappearing. â Wickwocket turned into a wolf to use her keen sense of smell to try and find Diesa, but ended up finding another shadow crossing nearby. â Immediately after entering the shadow crossing, they hear a loud pop and the crossing disappeared, followed by a quieter pop some distance away. â In Shadowfell, Dendell and Wix find some foot prints and follow them towards the chateau. â (Everyone meets up) â In the chateau, the group sees Diesa sitting alone with some undead servants. â She brings them up to speed, and they consider leaving but then Nitlios and the deva named Maradin return. â Maradin says nothing before leaving, but Nitlios tell Diesa that she will be shared by him and Torm until the contract is completed. â He then waves them off, telling them to leave before Zoltan moves the crossing any further away. â They head back to the forest and Diesa uses the sword to guide the group back to the shadow crossing, the Zoltan is reluctant to help. â Upon arriving back, they find their way back to the clearing and take turns keeping watch.
Vilthday, the 8th day of Senent â The morning, Wix took some time finding the darkness in forest, got a direction, and lead the group towards a large hill in the distance. â A while later, they are approaching the cliff side of the hill, following a trail. â Pretty abruptly, the trail ends into nothing, but Shevarrah notices a hidden wall hiding a cave. â The party follows the cave for a while until the rocky cave walls smooth out. â In the first room, they find two carrion crawlers rummaging through the rotten food of a pantry in a dining room. â The second room was some sort of temple, and a small cat wandering around it. â Shevarrah is having a strange feeling, the need to chase this cat...

Part 10 of Adventure Log+ (Sequel to Linkâs Thought Brambles. I highly recommend reading in order! Edited 9/30/23 to tighten language.) WARNING: This chapter is rated mature for disturbing imagery and violence.
âLinkâhouse!â
âI see it!â
âLight!â
âYes!â Normal light, not purple. Please, please, please, please-
âOY!â
WOAH, Rionee!
âWHO GOES THERE? WATCH WHERE YOUâRE RIDING! IF YOU TRAMPLE MY CABBAGES, IâLL TRAMPLE YOU!â
âOh!â
YEEEEESSSS!!! OH, THANK YOU! âHello, there! Weâll slow down!â
âYOUâD BETTER!â
âShh, Rionee, youâre good⊠slow down⊠good girl.â
âEasy, Tass. Hello! May we speak with you?â
âYou already are!â
âShe has a point.â
âUph- hehe, Link-â
âSorry.â Just relieved, SO relieved, thank Hylia! Zelda is, too. Her voice bright.
Thereâs the womanâwas tough to see her in the dark! Sheâs out of breath. Probably ran toward us to stop us running over her stuff. Without the Moon, I canât even see where those cabbages might be. Maybe if the house light hit them at the right angle, but-
âWhat brings you riding at speed at this hour?! You scared me half to death with all that pounding!â
Ohh, s@#$. How much do we-
âForgive us, madam- ah, is that what we ought to call you?â
âIâm Laysha, but you owe me an answer. I have to check those fields behind you in the morning to see what you mightâve wrecked. Thereâs paths for a reason, you know!â
Oops. Wheat farm. UmâŠ
âO- oh. I apologize, Laysha. Weâmy knight and Iâd worried you might have come to harm.â
To be fair, they couldâve put a fence upâŠ
âYour- I beg your pardon- knight? And how could you be worried about me? We just met!â
âWe came from the farm west of here. It had been attacked.â
.
Uh oh. Thatâs a pause, right there.
âAttacked, you say?â
âYes.â
âBy who? Bandits?â
âIâm afraid not.â
OH no, sheâs reaching for something- âWait!â Her hand, dagger hilt! âWe donât mean you harm, we really donât. It was monsters. I swear, it-â She canât see you clearly, Link. Too dark. Canât see the tunic, canât see-
Better help her see, Link.
Be slow, do NOT be threatening while you dismount, Link.  Hands way up in the air. âUm. I- I bet you canât see too well, but-â
âYou bet right. Keep those hands up.â
Yes, maâamâŠ
Her satchel- ?
Luminous stone! Smart if youâre working outside at night.
âWell, you donât look like a bandit. Then again, who does?â
Fair point.
âŠSheâs looking at my tunic.
âŠAnd my face.
âŠAnd my tunic again.
âŠAaaand I guess sheâll be doing that for a bitâŠ
âWhatâs your name?â
âLink.â
âPff. Ha! Is it?â
âYeaaah.â
âYour knight, huh? That make you the Princess?â
âIt does indeed.â
âPh. Princess Zelda and the Chid, riding through my field all alone in the dead of night?â
âŠThe what?
Zelda doesnât seem to know what to make of it, either, but sheâs also dismounting with her hands up.
âI- Iâm afraid I quite understand how unbelievable it must be.â
Sheâs stepping into the light.
Layshaâs eyeing the crown of braids. Zeldaâs famous for that. But⊠itâs not like someone else couldnât braid her hair that way. Itâs not enough. Her new tunic does have that altered royal crest on it⊠and it sure looks fancy. The materialâs extremely high-quality, which hopefully she can tell?
Zeldaâs turning. Showing her the royal bow. That⊠sure made Laysha bat her eyelids-
The sword, dumbass. Turn around, Link! Keep an eye out over your shoulder just in case, though.
Her jaw dropped.
âY- you⊠draw that sword, but DONâT YOU DARE hold it by its hilt. Nice and slow. Hold it choked⊠under the hilt.â
Thatâs fair.
Never tried to hold you like this, Fi⊠hope I donât cut myselfâŠ
You wonât, master. I am incapable of harming you.
Really? Cool...
Please, be convinced? Please? Nothing, nothing, looks like this sword. Even in the pale luminous stone-light it gleams bright white in a way it shouldnât. Youâd think the reflection would be greenâŠ
âHuh. Iâll be a pig in s@#$.â
âDoes that mean you believe us?â
âIt means Iâm closer to believing you than I was a minute ago. If youâre not here to mess with my farm, what are you doing? And why would you be doing it and not a bunch of knights?â
âIâm a knight.â
âShush.â
Wow.
âŠShe doesnât believe us. She wouldnât talk to the Princess that way if she did.
Would she?!
âThe real Princess and her knight ought to be holed up in the castle âtil the Calamity comes after what theyâre saying happened at that festival.â
âWeâre not.â
âYOUâRE not.â
Zelda please think of a way to prove this, please-
âOh!â
âWhat?â
âThe device on my hip. Itâs called a Sheikah Slate.â
Oh no.
âSo what?â
âIt- it contains pictures. Memories of places weâve been.â
Ohhhh!
âWould you allow me to show you?â
Please say yes. Please say yes.
ââŠMove slow. Hands away from that bow.â
As if sheâd have time to draw it and nock an arrow before you could swipe her with that dagger.
âŠWell, Zelda might, actually, because sheâs weird like me, but anyone else? No.
âIâm taking it off my hip. You see, hereâs the screenâthe part which shows the pictures.â
âŠI think Iâm allowed to turn around slowly, nowâŠ
Zeldaâs swiping past the screens. It must look like magic to Laysha.  A magic book. A magic writing slate. A magic picture-frame? Something.
There are the pictures⊠And wow, sheâs actually letting this woman hold it?
âYou simply touch it and move your finger left or right. Yes!â
âWh- what-? This is the castle, isnât it?â
âYes. Sir Link and I are in many of the pictures. Our friend Purah held the slate for much of the day of the festival, taking these.â
That day Iâd been miffed thinking the pictures didnât prove useful. Now, Link? Good thing she took those! Itâs obvious. Isnât it? There we are in all those shots, surrounded by guards. Thereâs Mipha with us. No one could mistake it. Could they?
Too- too bad. The slate was on my hip the whole time we were dancing.  It⊠would have been nice to have a picture of that.
Aww. Myrri⊠sleeping on Chee.
Right before
Before
Before
No- no- no, donât do that, Link. You canât be touching your arrow-spot right now. Layshaâll think youâre going for a weapon.
Resist.
Damn.
Itâs almost like an itch.
Ohhhh sheâs looking at my face, now. Squinting real hard.
âYouâre actually Sir Link?â
âYeah.â
â⊠And⊠and Princess Zelda?â
âYes.â
I canât tell in the green light but I bet sheâs going allllll pale.
OH and there she goes down on a knee!
âPlease, forgive me, Princess! I thought-â
âNo need! Truly, Laysha, please be at ease. I entirely understand your reaction.â
âI- I- Sir Link, please forgive me for what I said- I- I- I-â
âIs⊠this about that chid thing?â
âY- yes!â
âYeah, so⊠uh⊠what does that even mean?â
âBefore you answer, please, Laysha, stand. Youâve nothing to fear from us.â
Sheâs⊠shaking. âHere. Take my hand. Itâs really fine.â
Aw. Like a leaf.
âIt- um. It means⊠chosen kid.â
âHuh. Thatâs not as bad as I was expecting.â Itâs not even all that far off. Iâm only 18⊠Doesnât seem like something youâd call someone you had confidence in, thoughâŠ
âLaysha⊠I am sorry to say your neighbors directly to the west were attacked.â
âB- by monsters?â
âYes. We⊠know for certain there were at least seven bokoblins, each apparently riding a stolen horse-â
âThat canât be right, Princess.â
âOh?â
âMarc and Challa only had three horses.â
S@#$.
Itâs what we already thought, though.
That eyebrow-crease on Zelda. A slightly pushed-up lower lip. She feels bad.
âI⊠am sorry to tell you, your neighbors⊠four people were dead. Three adults, perhaps. One⊠child.â
Tears.
And shock.
âA- all of them?â
And that confirms it. The numberâs right.
Those things⊠those were them. The people who lived there.
âŠThey were once, master. They were dead when we arrived.
It still feels like murder.
I am⊠sorry, master. You merely laid soulless bodies to rest.
Zelda must've nodded. I- wasn't seeing properly. Tears on Layshaâs face reflecting green.
âDo you know which way the bokoblins went? P- princess?â
âSirs Link and Daile dispatched them.â
âO-oh! But- then why-â
âWe think there was someone or something else with them.â Wish I could tell her what. âSomething⊠that made these⊠odd, glowing patches of something that looks like mud. It lays on top of the ground. Itâs called malice.â
âI havenât seen anything like that.â
Oh good.
âI- I have toâŠâ
The house. There must be others. âOf course. Can we go with you? Weâll check around, make sure things are okay.â
âYes- please do, Sir Link. Princess. Ah- i-if you donât mind, please⊠doesnât seem so important now, but...â
âWatch for the cabbages?â
âEh- yes, S-sir Link.â
âCertainly, Laysha.â
Would be helpful to have moonlight. Zelda's looking, too. Weâd see malice if it was around... it makes its own light. I just wish it was easier to see anything else prowling around out here in the dark. No black outlines against the stars except normal-looking things.  Some trees. A pretty large copse at the rear of the house. Baby trees. Some not too farâmaybe still in the wheat field? They should probably cut those soon. Lots of baby trees we passed, which is fine, you just donât want them right in the middle of your crop. I see the well-pump to the south of the house, too. And another copse southeast of that.
The horses seem okay. They⊠need a rest and some water.
Damn, I need water, too. Canteen. âGmpg-gmpg-gmpg-gmpg-gmpg-ghhh. Water, Z- Princess?â
âI still have some of my own. Thank you, though.â
Guess sheâs not that thirsty.
âŠSpeaking of thirsty, âHave you been having any trouble with your drinking water lately?â
âNo, not at all. Why do you ask, Sir?â
âGood. Just⊠making sure. That malice muck was practically on top of the other farmâs water.â
âIndeed. It may be wise for you to pump some and store it in traveling containers just in case.â
âO-oh. Oh. You think⊠you think somethingâs coming this way?â
âWe donât know. We chose a direction to investigate.â
âI see, Princess. Reeb? REEB!â
âYEAH?â
âWE HAVE⊠IMPORTANT VISITORS!â
âYEAH I HEARD YOU YELLING ABOUT YOUR CABBAGES! WHO IS IT? ITâS NOT FRIPP, IS IT?â
âOF COURSE NOT, DIDNâT I JUST SAY THEY WERE IMPORTANT?â
âWELL, HOW DO I KNOW?!â
âYOU SHOULD KNOW I DONâT MEAN FRIPP!â
âI DONâT KNOW, YOUâVE BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT THOSE DAMN LOOPER MOTHS, MAYBE THATâS WHY YOU WERE YELLING ABOUT CABBAGES!â
âWOULD FRIPP REALLY BE DRIVING HIS HORSE RIGHT THROUGH MY CABBAGES IF HE CAME TO NIX THE RUDDY CATTERPILLARS?!â
âHEâS DULL ENOUGH FOR IT!â
âIâm sorry, Princess, he does like to argue with me.â
Yeah, wellâŠ
âItâs no matter, Laysha.â
âŠyou werenât exactly discouraging him.
âTHEY HAVE BAD NEWS!â
âMORE BAD NEWS?â
âRuddy⊠heâll be thinking Iâm on about the harvests again.â
âWeâd heard some of that at the castle. Has it affected your farm?â
Oooh, Zelda, this is NOT the best time for-
âIt wasâŠum⊠unseasonably cold in spring, Princessâmore than I ever remember, at least.â
Never mind. Seems like a welcome distractionâŠ
âSo, we, Reeb and I⊠we waited to plant like many others did, though it wasnât so bad here.â
Makes sense. Southernmost edge of wheat country.
âThose who didnât plant late had a good deal of their crops ruined.â
âFrost?â
âFrost. I hear theyâre biting their nails up near Tabantha village. Their wheat may not harden in time.â
.
Thatâs not a comfortable silence.
.
I hear her breath shaking a little.
Small cabin. Probably just Laysha and Reeb. Heâs crossing his arms at us. Heâs⊠short like me.
What- oh.  A dog. Walking funny- heh. Old dog. Stretching doggie-arthritis legs. Boris used to do that. He only lasted about a year and a half after that started. Dogs donât live long enough.
âWhoâre you?â
âReeb, for Hyliaâs sake, donât be rude! Theseâre Princess Zelda and Sir Link!â
ââŠYouâre having me on.â
âIâm not.â
âYes, you are.â
âIâm NOT, Reeb, just look at them! Look at- Princess, would you mind showing him?â
âNot at all.â
Slate again.
Iâll do a 360 while he looks.
âH-hot damn, how does this work!?â
âHeh. Weâre not entirely sure. I understand light passes through this lens and falls onto a flat plane. I do not yet understand how the light is kept.â
âDamn. DAMN.â
Still nothing unusual-looking.
The horses are a little shuffly.
Theyâre thirsty. Iâll ask about drinking water for them before we go.
âWowâŠâ
Crickets are real loud. Itâs almost too cold for them. Last hurrah of the fall, I guess.  It feels like itâll frost any night now.
âAlright- Princess- what can we do for you?â
âYou need do nothing for us, sir. Weâre here to check on your well-being. Have you seen anything unusual tonight, or earlier today perhaps?â
âNo, Princess. Itâs been a day like any other.â
âI see. Well, then- Sir Link and I would like to circle your farm once to ensure nothing seems amiss, then head northwest to check your neighbors in that direction. Perhapsânow I think on it, perhaps you could tell us about them?â
âEh- sure, Princess. Northwest youâll find Erl and Mizral. They farm wheat like most of us do around here, some vegetables⊠and then east of them and a little east of here thereâs a big family, Cawlin, Gorsdaddâtheyâre brothersâand Rana and Hallen, and all their kids.â
âHow many?â
âEh- nine, Princess.â
Nine kidsâŠ
âAnd thereâs Geenra, too, sheâs getting mighty old at this pointâstill kicking, though.â
âPrincess, Reeb!â
âOh! Yes, Princess, so sorry about that-â
âItâs alright, truly.â
Oh- heh! Hi there, boy.
âPrincess?â
Hand licks.
âYes, Laysha?â
Always nice. You like behind-ear-scratches?
âAfter what you told me⊠why donât I make you a quick map?â
 Yesss, of course you do.
âI can⊠write the names down, too.â
Classic dog.
âWhat they⊠told?â
You donât seem bothered by anything, do you?
âThank you, Laysha.â
Nothing but wind in the grass out here.
âEh- wait, what happened to your neck Sir- Sir Link?â
âHm?â Oh! How⊠do I explain this? ââŠMonster-bite.â
âMONSTER-bite?â
âYeah.â
âDeep?â
âKind of.â
âWell⊠if Layshaâs writing something out for you, I can take a look at that.â
Zeldaâs nodding. She cleaned it butâŠ
Sheâs so smart, but I guess she doesnât really have much experience with wound care. It just seems like she does because sheâs been there whenever I was hurt this month. Might be a good idea. âSureâthanks. Iâd appreciate that.â
âCome on in â sit in that seatâheheâthatâs Layshâs got-hurt seat.â
Guess Laysha hurts herself a lot.Â
âThatâs not true.â
Maybe she tries to fight off all those cabbage moths.
âSure is, hehehe.â
Hehehe with that dagger. âPhh.â
âReeb, come on, this isnât the time!â
âŠWow, sheâs right. Whatâs wrong with you, Link?
âAlright, Iâll unbind it. Â If it looks fine I can at least get you a clean bandage.â
âThanks.â
âI shall stand watch.â
âZ- but-â
âNo buts, Link. Iâll be right here in the doorway. I shanât be out of sight.â
ââŠAlright, here weâŠâ
âŠIt must look real bad.
âŠReal⊠bad?
He went so quiet. Wh- why is he looking at me like that?
ââŠLaysha?â
âMm hm.â
âStop.â
âWhat do you-â
âThatâs no monster bite, Sir Link.â
Oh. Oh-F@#$-
I just heard her dagger come out.
âReeb?!â
âNO, Laysha, just run!â
âREEB?!â
âWh- thereâs no need- we wonât hurt you!â Link you IDIOT-
âThen explain your damn self!â
Yes, I shouldâve done that FIRST-
âA person did that, not some bokoblin! You think weâre idiots?!â
âNO, of course-â
âPlease!â
Z- Zelda-
âPleaseâLink told you the truth!â
âLike hell he did, LOOK at that! Itâs obvious what did it-â
âI understand, but- please. Â Please, look at this last picture.â
Last- last-? Right⊠sheâd been taking pictures of the malice. She must have gotten the⊠ReDead. In the last one.
I hear her moving. Circling slowly behind me. Be careful- careful- if Layshaâs really scared-
Reeb doesnât want to take his eyes off me.
He thinks I killed them.
âŠWell. I did.
Two of them, anyway.
âPlease, look.â
He is. Over me.
And heâs losing absolutely all the blood in his face.
âWhat⊠what in Hyliaâs green hills is that?â
âŠLayshaâs moving, too. To see, right? Not to⊠stab me⊠or her. Right?
Stop shaking, Link. You- you wonât have to fight them. You wonât. You wonât. Wonât have to- to put a sword a sword through anyoneâs
Neck
Windpipe
F@#$.
F#@$, Link get a hold of yourself.
Even if they did attack, you wouldnât have to-
âReeb? Reeb, thatâs Marc.â
âŠI wish she hadnât said that.
âSkies, Laysha, I can see that. I can⊠what⊠what happened?â
I know his name, now.
ââŠYou can, perhaps, see why we made such haste.â
âŠLaysha⊠wonât stab meâŠ
âI- you- you think thisâll happen here?â
Can move- scrub my face.
âWe donât know. We feared so.â
Scrub it clean, I guess. Something.
âThis is the first farm we saw.â
âReeb, sew him up.â
âHuh?â
âSew Sir Link up while I finish the damn map! Itâs obvious why they need it, isnât it?!â
âY- yeah. Right. Right. Damn. Uh. Yeah, so⊠thatâs⊠awful torn. Stitches. Hang on.â
Stitches.
Never needed those.
Always was good at not getting hurt.
Your weakness, Link?
Hesitation.
You canât hesitate.
Why the hell didnât I listen to Fi?
Do not blame yourself, master.
Who should I blame, then?
I have never known⊠any of my wielders not to hesitate where peopleâs lives were concerned.
I guess, at least, Iâm no weaker than them, then.
No more hesitating, Link.
Threat?
Take it out.
And⊠oh! âThey can shock you still.â
âWhat?â
âThese things. They- if they look at you, they can shock you still.â
âI can see why they would.â
âNo, I mean with magic. They paralyze you. Thatâs how this one got close enough to bite me.â
Guess I shocked him still, too.
Oh? The dog. Licking my hand again. Thanks, boy. Youâre so old, arenât you? Your snoutâs gone all grey. Even around your cute little doggie eyeballs.
Needle and thread. Soaking in alcohol.
âI, uhâhere. You ever been stitched?â
âNo.â
âIt hurts and feels funny at the same time. Try not to move.â
âOkay.â
Oh-oh-ohhhh that is strange. Like some unrealistically-skinny fish is swimming through me. Not exactly unbearable considering what it felt like to have my heart muscle burst by an arrowhead.
âJust a few more. It ripped you butâŠÂ well⊠people donât have teeth meant for, uhâŠâ
âHunting.â Right?
âUh-huh.â
âI⊠I shall return to watch. But also⊠Sir Link and I must leave soon. We donât know where⊠whatever caused this went or what it even is.â
HIS breath is trembling too, now.
âItâs just you two living here?â
âJust us, Sir Link.â
âIâd⊠recommend only one of you sleep at any given time for the moment.â
âHohhh. Hully here used to be a good watchdog. Afraid sheâs not as spry as she used to be.â
Oh. She! Oops. Sorry, girl. Not that I said âboyâ out loud, anywayâŠ
One awake isnât enough if something can shock you totally still and silent. They needâŠÂ âYou have other animals?â
âYeah, thereâs a little barn. Round the trees that way.â
âIâd recommend sleeping in there. Animals, they-â
âDamn fine idea. Yeah, they notice things.â
Good. Good. Canât protect everyone, but⊠maybe itâll help if something heads this way. And⊠âUm. Arrows donât⊠donât work that well. You have toâwell, you donât have to, but it seems like⊠severing the head⊠is⊠best.â Dear Goddess. I canât believe I said that.
Seems like no one else can, either.
Dead silence.
Dead.
âŠ
The dogâs ears. Up. Oh no- quiet, quiet, Link- âDo you hear-â
âThe crickets!â
He hears it too, STAND, LINK! Quietly quietly quietly shhh- shhh- good, yes, no sound, stay down, you two, stay down-
What shut the crickets up what did it? Doesnât have to be one of those things, could be a fricking deer, but have to look, have to, and Zeldaâs on point automatically because she was already in the door but Iâll take it from her as soon as I get out there even with this stupid thread hanging out of my neck because Iâll be damned if I let her get bitten!
.
So quiet.
Iâm not sure itâs wise for them to stay in the house. If I were something nasty, Iâd figure they were in there.
Beckon them out?
âŠNot quite yet.
Look around firstâŠ
Sword⊠itâs so reflective⊠Itâll be okay away from the firelight, though. Keep it drawn.
âŠItâs quieter to the north-northwest.
No, Zelda, stay⊠stay there⊠watch meâŠ
That wayâŠ
QuietestâŠ
Stay crouchedâŠ
Wish the tall wheat was here. I could hide in it. As it is, Iâm just low.
Inch forward, Link.
Maybe youâll just look like one of the cabbages.
No. Donât laugh, idiot.
Whateverâs wrong with you, get it out later. Maybe you just need a real long half-crazed maniacal laugh, but you canât have it right now. Wait.
Zeldaâs circling quietly behind me. Sounds like sheâs trying to stay low, too.
We⊠havenât even actually trained her, yet.
Sheâ strong. Fast. Great shot. Her instincts seem really good. She stopped Vayden taking my head off.
But⊠thatâs the only close-combat sheâs ever been in.
Was this the plan? Were they trying to draw us north? Take her out before she gets too good at what sheâs supposed to do?
Or is it something else?
.
I donât see anything that doesnât just look like the wind in the grass. In the leaves. Not even many leaves on trees at this point⊠except the evergreens. Swaying branches.
Like those drawings of creepy forests in momâs old storybooks. Long, tendrilled branch-ends like way too many spindly fingers.
At least the pine branches donât look like that.
Eyes adjusting out of the firelight. Good.
Still a very dark night.
Into the copse, or around it?
.
In. Iâll be hidden better. And if I was a nasty critter trying to hide, thatâs where Iâd go.
.
.
Zelda.
I hear her following.
Sheâs smart. Do I direct her, orâŠ?
Letâs at least share a plan.
Come here?
.
Yep.
.
Sheâs good at sneaking.
.
.
.
Hi.
Your back to the cabin wall?
.
Yeah.
Watch me.
.
No, no no, donât come in after me if I disappear.
.
Oh, come on.
.
Sheâs not going to listen to me.
I think. We're... talking with our hands. Hard to tell and OH weâre both dumb, slate?
.
Huh? Why not?
.
If we use the slate youâll know what I-
Oh. No, IâM just dumb.
The light.
Pointless sneaking around with that screen blaring out into the darkness, right Link?
Yeah.
Your Princess is smarter than you.
Donât you dare forget it.
Which meansâŠ
Sheâs probably right about following me if she loses sight of me.
Which⊠she will. Quickly in so little light.
I really wish there were still three of us.
Itâs likely Daile hasnât even met anyone else, yet. Heâs probably still riding south.
And even if he does, theyâre supposed to start at the farm two west.
Weâre on our own. Just have to do our best.
Trust her.
In I go.
.
.
Thick brush. Some evergreens. Hides me.
A few feet. Still.
Again. Be still.
Still.
Nothing.
.
Keep going.
.
.
More.
.
.
Nothing.
.
.
Hear Zelda. Her feet. Soft.
.
.
Further in.
.
.
.
Even darker.
.
.
Shapes and shadows.
.
.
FF-
RRrrg. Rabbit.
You scared it, Link.
Stay the hell still for a bit.
.
.
.
Wonder if it scared Zelda.
.
.
.
.
A few more steps.
.
.
.
It got even quieter after the rabbit stopped.
Now IâM what everythingâs afraid of.
I screwed it up.
To be fair, I couldnât see the rabbit.
No avoiding it.
.
.
Have to wait.
See what comes back.
.
.
.
.
Breathe.
.
.
.
.
.
Breeze. Getting so cold.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Sheâs still as a statue behind me, too.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
I used to do this hunting bokoblinsâŠ
I bet she never has.
Sheâs patient, though.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Some sounds returning.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Lots, actually.
Louder than before.
âŠDid it go?
.
It couldâve just been a deer.
Wonât assume⊠but could be.
.
.
Move, Link.
.
.
.
.
Just the crickets right near me going quiet.
.
.
Whatever it was definitely moved.
I canât tell which way.
Canât tell if thereâs another quiet patch somewhere.
.
.
.
Just have to keep inching along in the dark.
-----
Nothing.
Zelda?
Yeah. Sheâs coming up to crouch beside me.
âWhat do you think it was?â
Supreme quiet, those whispers in my ear.
Causing urges.
Canât really do urges right now.
Calm down, self. âDeer?â
âDid you hear hoofsteps?â
âNo.â
âIt was so quiet. Youâd thinkâŠâ
âYeah.â
The crickets have been back full-force for a while, though. I still can barely see in front of my face, just silhouettes. More so in the direction of the house, but stillâŠ
It could be that⊠âWhat if we missed it?â
âHow?â
âIf it stayed still?â
âIâd have thought we would have spooked any hiding animals. It wouldâve run off.â
âYeah⊠thatâs⊠kind of what I mean.â
ââŠNot an animal?â
âI donât know. I-â
What-?
Didnât mean to grab you so hard, Zelda, sorry, but holy s@#$- holy s@#$-
No! No talkingâŠ
Dammit⊠quiet behind us, behind us again, whatever it is!
Back through the copse?
âŠNo.
Up, Zelda. Up! Whatever it was knew we were there anyway, up, crouched but up, hurry along the copse, on the outside, back toward the house-
Look. Look everywhere, Link, all around you. Did anything change? Is anything moving?
This would be easier with no breeze. Everythingâs moving a little. Canât tell. Just⊠not enough light.
My Goddess Iâd been worried maybe we were wasting time here creeping around in the dark, but not if there really is something nasty slinking aroundâŠ
.
.
.
Anything?
.
.
.
Any-
Wait.
.
What?
.
North-northwest.
Something doesnât look right. What-
What is it?
Zeldaâs tapping me, wondering why I stopped.
Look- somethingâs different.Â
Sheâs probably not sure what I mean. She was looking more south while we walked toward the cabin.
What is it? What is it?
âŠBaby trees?
Werenât there more of those?
Dammit, Link, thatâs a stupid thing to be different.
Iâm just⊠I must just not be remembering right.
Back to moving. Still weird quiet. Still-
!!!!!!! The horses!
âLink!â
âI know!â
RUN LINK, RUN THE HORSES ARE SCARED I know that sound, Rionee reared, she reared, sheâs not so easy to scare, whatever it is itâs bad and S@#$ there she goes she just BOLTED, Iâve never seen her do that ever ever not even once THERE GOES TASS WITH AN ABSOLUTE SCREAM and the dog the dogâs barking barking growling whimpering!

Damn, thatâs a shovel right through its gut or whatever WOULD be its gut if it were alive and slicing this thing is easy as long as the hands donât have you, the hands are so strong-
More more more hands I see them coming SLICE THIS THING, COME ON, DIE, D-
âOH!â
âBACK OFF, BACK OFF!â I donât want any more of that foul stuff getting on Zelda, my Goddess, sheâs injured- Zelda⊠Zeldaâs injured, what does that stuff do if it gets in a wound?!
âLinkâŠâ
âItâs alright. Itâs ALRIGHT. Look at it. Itâs⊠itâs⊠disintegrating. Like the⊠bokoblinsâŠâ
âNot precisely- hhhh-hh⊠hhhh-hh-â
Itâs⊠more like itâs melting. As it⊠twitches. Disappearing into the ground⊠the hands-? Them, tooâŠ
âLink-â
âItâs okay-â
âLink, there are MORE.â
ââŠWh-?â Where- she sees-?
âThere. Just there. Do you see it?â
âŠLike skinny, leafless trees against the sky. Dear⊠Holy⊠ââŠI see them.â
âŠ.How many hands does each one have?
And⊠why donât I see any of the face-pillars? âŠI didnât before, either. Itâs like this one just appeared out of theâŠ
GroundâŠ
The ground.
âZelda?â
âHh-yes?â
âUnderground?â
âLikely.â
âW- we have to- have to run-â
âNo, Reeb. Donât run. Laysha?â

âYh-hes.â
âIâll walk with you, slowly. Letâs get them.â
âA-a- hh- al-r-right.â
Sheâs brave. Shaking, but her jawâs set.
Theyâre both brave.
The hands ARE moving. Theyâre so slow. Hard to tell unless youâre paying a lot of attention. They sway, too. Like branches in breezeâŠ
They were already on their way here. We passed them.
Were there more underground behind us?
âŠBucket. Good. âOut there. Yeah. Zelda!â
âYes!â
âThink you can throw as well as you shoot?â
âYES.â
Damned if I donât love the look on her face.
Damn.
Damn this.
Plenty of tall grass around. This is NOT the time to take advantage of it.
Iâll just have to save it for later.
âScatter them even, please, so I can see the hands.â
âWh- thatâs all?!â
âYes.â
âThen what?!â
âThen Iâll slice every single one of their Goddess-damned hands off. Letâs see if that makes them come up for air.â
âBut if they catch-â
âThey wonât. Not this time.â I know what you are, now. No baby trees, hereâŠ
Well. There are, actually, but I know which are which.
There she goes with the stones.
Theyâre not that bright, but with how dark it is tonight they make a big difference.
Concentrate, Link.
Youâre going to do the Thing.
Run.
Run.
RUN.
SLIDE
SLICED
Damn things bleed like a hinox headwound. BleedâŠ. Itâs not blood. Green. Unless the stone lightâs playing tricks on me.

DODGE STRIKE- good, only takes one good swipe with you, Fi.

We know youâre there.
And I knew you were there, you. My sword? Your face.
Just keep hacking, Link⊠and moving to the side. This thingâs so slow it canât even catch you without those hands to help it out.
âŠDone.
No more. Right?
âŠI donât think so.
âYOU SEE MORE?!â
âNOT AT PRESENT, LINK!â
âWEâD BETTER CHECK!â
âYES!â
âNot before we⊠we see to that wound on you, Princess.â
âOh. Hh. Yes, itâs⊠surprising. Iâd have thought it would... bother me more⊠H-here comes Link.â
âAlcohol-â
âNo, NO you donât, Sir Link. We have supplies and weâre not⊠hunting these things. Youâll accept our hospitality right now or may Hylia strike me dead. Weâd BE dead if you hadnât come.â
W-wow. ââŠThanks, Laysha.â
âThank YOU.â
âI, ah- h- hang on. Hully.â
O- oh, no. Did she-
?
She didnât get bitten, right? Just grabbed. Their grip is extremely strong, though.
.
That was a tiny dog-whine.
Better than dead.
He has her.
âPoor old girl. Had the fright of your life, you did. Did you⊠see where it got her?â
âNeck.â
ââŠMust hurt. Weâll get her in.â
âLetâs get you in, too.â
ââŠWe still ought to have a watch-â
âLet us clean your wounds first, Princess. That part wonât take long.â
âIâll finish up your stitching, Sir, and pardon me for saying this, Princess, but you canât leave that tunic on after this. Itâs befouled.â
âYes⊠I do have changes.â
âDamn- the horses-â
âTheyâll come back. They will.â Rionee will, and Tassâll follow her. âWeâll finish here as fast as possible, and weâll do a circuit around your farm before we go. Can I⊠trouble you for a few of those luminous stones?â
âOf course. Anything you need.â
We⊠got here just in time?
Or maybe not. The Sun hadnât quite gone all the way down by the time we left the first farm. Maybe⊠maybe darkness is part of the equation, here?
Iâve never known Dead Hands to exist in anywhere but deep in the earth, master. Â Itâs why I didnât relay them along with my knowledge of the stal-creatures. Darkness may be of importance as it is with stals.
Okay.
Okay.
If thatâs the caseâŠ
We really do have to move.
Fast.
Because itâll be night for another⊠what, eleven hours or so? Twelve?
A lot can happen in twelve hours.
These things move so slowly. Could they have made it here from that other farm in a day?
âLink?â
âComingâsorry.â
Hurry, Link.
Then hunt hands in the dark.

Would you rather go kite surfing or ice skating?
Ice skating. Why would you want to go kite surfing? Kites are good at one thing.

Adventure Logs - 1/31-2/7/17
Raanday, the 7th day of Cornith
Floor 2 â The heroes find themselves tending to their wounds for a bit after killing Odur and finding out they have a little less than 2 hours remaining before the completion on the summoning of Kul Elna's terrible monster. â Seeing that the initial way ahead of them was covered in boiling water, the team headed off in search of a different way down. â They crossed over a bridge of lava, carefully avoiding an imperceptive flameskull and a sleeping black ooze on the ceiling. â Kara found a wall that was almost alive with weird mulch-like qualities, and smashed ehr way through it. â There they found stairs, and carefully stepped past the fire snakes wandering around the area.
Floor 3 â Coming down the stairs, they find a a family of pixies who have found themselves trapped in this horrid place. â Trym promises to come back for them and help them escape, but the pixies were not much help. â Further on down this cavernous structure, they find a family of fire bears, who seem threatened at first, but Trym calms them down. â Wandering even further still, the group comes across a room filled with pillars and a large Giant statue. â Rinn and Kara both step into the pillars and immediately start falling into and endless pit, but they are quickly pulled out by Cletus, as there is no actual pit there. â Eventually they get to a large open space filled with an enormous lava river and a number of cultists. â A fight ensues, ending in all of the cultists dying and a large door on the other side of the river being opened.
Floor 4 â The stair descend into the heard of the volcano. Lava is everywhere and the heat is unbelievably intense. â Following the winding hallways, leads the group to a small living area (for what???) â There they found an enchanted forge that combined the pieces of the daggar into one. â Past the forge they see Annas Colo performing a ritual to someone the monster. â Krig convinces Martin to charge forward and the battle begins. â Annas proved to be an encredibly powerful sorceress and nearly killed both Rinn and Martin several times. â Kul Elna even comes out to fight but Kara meets him head on with Atem's Razor (the daggar) and finally kills him. â Annas Colo sees that her fate is grim, falling to her knees, she took two arrows and fell into the lava. â After a short celebration, they leave the center of the volcano, find the pixies and leave the temple, making camp on the side of the mountain.
Vilthday, the 8th day of Cornith
After wards â The next morning, the group discussed what their next plans were, and came to these conclusions. â Martin agreed to not go back to Senlin if Krig and Cletus helped reform the city and remove the power from the few and give it back to the people. â Krig and Cletus plan on doing that by spreading the word of Teek-Teek. â Kara wants to either go visit Bihn Tarir Keep or spend some time forging weapons. â Trym wants to go back to Redwickmoore and work at the Silver Wain in by day, carousing by night, as well as give the Daggar to Anys. â Rinn now has enough money to buy his wife, and plans on doing just that; everyone will be invited to the wedding. â Anys will give the daggar to some clerics higher up in the order, as they will know what to do. â Everyone plans on meeting back in the Silver Wain in about 2 months later.

Session 2
Day 2Â
The day starts as the four humans-turned-pokemon wake up in their Guild bedroom. Cordelia the FlabĂ©bĂ© is finally awake and starts ordering the others to stop this âsick jokeâ otherwise sheâll have them all tested in the lab. There isnât much time for much banter as Tyrogue, Salandit, and Stella bring in Avery the Scraggy, who apparently just woke up near the statue the others work up around. The five talk about their current situation and how they all used to be humans and donât know whatâs going on. Cleffa appears once again, and takes the group to the main hall for the daily briefing and reception.Â
When they get to the main hall, they see a large amount of Pokemon there. Among them are familiar faces from the night before, such as Hibbee, who introduces them to the rest of the guild. The group heads to the dining hall to get their meal for the day and meet Team Amie, a Bronze Rank team here at the guild. Their leader, Bailey the Bayleef, introduces herself to the group along with her teammates, Pixie the Spritzee, and Mina the Emolga. Soon after this, Sterling approaches the group and offers to give them a tour of the facilities and of Treasure Town. Before they can go that much further through the facilities however, some guild members purposefully bump into them. They introduce themselves as Team Ultima and say that theyâre here to become the top rescue squad at this guild, and that any other weaklings better not try to get in their way. The leader, Atlas the Gible, introduces himself alongside his teammates, Kiki the Furret, and Slippy the Poliwhirl. After this rude introduction, the team is led to the job board by Sterling and given an explanation on how jobs and ranks work in the guild. However, it seems that all of the jobs except for one has been left for the team to fulfill. It seems to be grunt work, as itâs a job finding food and water for the guild. Atlas the Gible smirks as he passes by the team realizing this is the only job available to them.Â
Sterling accompanies the group through Treasure Town where they meet a variety of characters, including: Ricc the Scrafty (*Owner of Scrafty Storage), Lucy the Klefki (Owner of Klefki Appraisal), Sable and Mabel the Sableye Sisters (Owners of Sableye Market), Dewey the Delibird (Owner of Delibird Bank and Lottery) who gives them each 50 pokecoins, and Fluffy the Arcanine and his Growlithe possy (Police of Treasure Town). They stumble upon the final building, a dojo in the shape of all three Hitmon evolutions, called the Hitmonbrojo. The group enters with Sterling and is rudely greeted by the Hitmonbros themselves. Sterling vouches for the group saying that as guild members, they should be able to train at the dojo, because the dojo in the past has always worked alongside the guild. The Hitmonbros refuse, saying that they need to be at least Bronze Rank or higher to train at the Brojo. Sterling, angry, leads the group out, planning on telling the guild master about this exchange.Â
Before they get away from the Brojo however, a circular silhouette is seen floating behind the Brojoâs entrance. Upon returning to the guild, the team takes the remaining job of fetching water and food for the rest of the guild and talks to Hibbee. Hibbee tells them all that if they succeed in this job, then theyâll all receive a special mission. Before Hibbee can elaborate however, Tyrogue comes in crying and Hibbee sends out the group for privacy. The group hears Tyrogue say âitâs my brothersâ before leaving the room. They now prepare for their first actual job as a rescue squad.Â
Will this first job go off without a hitch? Why was Tyrogue crying about his brothers? What was that circular silhouette inside the Brojo? Will the group come up with a name for their rescue squad before the dayâs end? All these questions and more to be answered, next time on PMDnD!Â
Quote(s) of the session:Â
The Hitmonbros: sucks to suckÂ
Sterling: are you trying to get fresh with me?Â
MVP:Â
Everyone! The whole team receives 3 extra XP.
