grey reef sharks appear grey from a distance, but actually have a bronze tint to their skin.
grey reef sharks do not pose a threat to humans, but have been inquisitive around divers. if there is food in the water, this shark will become very active and even aggressive. the expected lifespan is estimated to be at least 25 years.
grey reef sharks are less than 1.9 m (6.2 ft) long. the maximum reported length is 2.6 m (8.5 ft) and the maximum reported weight is 33.7 kg (74 lb).

Introduction
Here be mine list of information sources that I often use for arguing with people who genocidally hate wolves (and other wildlife,) based on misinformation, anti-wolf propaganda like 'Smoke a Pack a Day!' (yes, wolf haters literally say inflammatory hogwash like this,) and centuries of uneducated fear based upon the very few times in history (actual accounts forgotten) that (likely largely habituated) wolves have been less than friendly to humans. (And I was going to include a picture of one of these 'smoke a pack a day' things but urgh... honestly they make me want to vomit.)
🐾Please note that I will be constantly adding to this list and updating it as I find new ammunition - er, sources, with which to argue with/informationally support my ongoing work on my science-based graphic novel, Knife Edge. (Which I haven't worked on much lately due to my need to work on my shop - where you can buy all kinds of wolfy art by the way - instead.)
⚠️Important to note: wolf scientists can be a bit hard to talk to at times due to the fact that some of them have literally received death threats from wolf haters and people in the livestock industries who erronously believe based upon hearsay (i.e. no actual science,) that wolves are a threat to their top dollar. That's why the typically great podcast Ologies had trouble finding a wolf scientist for its lupinology episode - because people who hate wolves tend to hate people who say that they need to stop killing wolves because how dare they be wrong. (I'm still peeved about how bad that lupinology episode was by the way; it didn't even mention trophic cascades. Sigh. (That's why I haven't linked it here, and why I hope that Alie Ward will redo it someday, or that the podcast Science Versus will do a wolf episode instead someday.)
I myself am not a wolf scientist, (although this was my dream as a little girl which I gave up on due to painful dyscalcula,) but I am striving to be as expert about lupinology as much as a non-scientist can be, especially so that I can do wolves proper justice in my story Knife Edge as well as other future wolf advocacy projects that are percolating in my deranged little mind. My stunningly crappy brain for math may have prevented me from studying to become an actual wildlife biologist studying wolves in the field but it isn't going to stop me from helping wolves with my art by attempting to educate and dispel misinformation about them. I can do my best to be a science communicator and do wolf outreach through my work. Hopefully I won't get lynched for it.
Please feel free to use the following links should you decide that you need them. This post is linked in my pinned post so that it can be more easily found especially by me.

Why I Advocate for Wolves
- Because it's the right thing to do: wolves are sentient, highly social beings who live in closely knit family groups much like our own human families complete with parents who impart generational knowledge - such as tactically how to specifically hunt particular prey (for example: elk) - upon their offspring who either go off eventually to start their own families or stay put in their natal pack with their parents, helping to raise their younger siblings. No animal has been more horrifically scapegoated over the centuries of our coexistence than the wolf, which some people are still trying to eradicate even though no science supports this.
- Because I dream of a world where predators are protected, where all killing of them is banned, because they are simply too important to our planet to destroy. They are deeply critical to rewilding our planet and helping our own species survive, because where wolves are, wetlands and forests thrive, helping cure drought, prevent wildfires, facilitate natural carbon capture through the bettering of these ecosystems, and clean the water that we humans also drink, all by preventing cervid species like deer from overgrazing and destroying baby trees. Wolves cause trophic cascades which promote the survival of hundreds of other species from charismatic scavengers like bald eagles and red foxes to the freshwater trout that anglers love to catch whose health is aided by the beavers which are able to create expansive water meadows whenever deer are prevented by predators like wolves from eating all of the beavers' food.
- Because unshockingly, killing wolves greatly damages their genetic diversity, hindering their ability to survive as a species. (I can't believe that there are actually people surprised by this.)
- Because before we ruined everything, the presence of wolves and lack of human interference meant that pre-colonial biodiversity was unimagineably greater than what we see today and I for one would like to see this amazing biodiversity explode again within my lifetime.
- Because wolves and humans have a lot in common; they too mourn their dead and exhibit joy at the introduction of new babies to their families. Recognizing this isn't anthropomorphism; we too are animals, afterall.
"We have doomed the wolf not for what it is, but for what we deliberately and mistakenly perceive it to be – the mythologized epitome of a savage ruthless killer – which is, in reality, no more than a reflected image of ourself.” - Farley Mowat, Never Cry Wolf.

🐺Wolf Specific Citations
- Wolves as scapegoats for human evil.
- No statistical support for wolf 'control' (culling) and maternal penning as methods for helping endangered caribou in British Columbia. (Actually, erase the word culling - what they really mean is wolf genocide.)
- The plight of wolves in America (features an absolute textwall of citations!)
- New document suggests British Columbia is using Judas Wolves for aerial wolf cull.
- Account of use of Judas Wolves in British Columbia
- BC Wolf Cull: documents reveal cruel methods of killing wolves. (You can bet your butt that I am furious at my province for this.)
- Wolves do not require human 'help' to control their numbers.
- Wolves are extremely important for environmental health as they cause trophic cascades.
- A wolf, abruptly noticing a human, runs away in fear. (Example of typical human/wolf interaction.)
- Are wolves dangerous to humans? (Spoiler alert: they're statistically not.)
- Killing wolves is unnecessary: wolves naturally limit their own numbers.
- Wolves are not a significant threat to livestock. What is a genuine threat to livestock generally? Free roaming dogs (in fact, farmers in Scotland are allowed to outright shoot dogs who they notice bothering their animals,) dystocia (birthing complications,) and inclement weather - issues which could be aleviated at least a little if ranchers would just use some range riders - aka, cowboys.
- US government data shows that wolves have a negligible effect on livestock losses.
- Killing wolves actually leads to more livestock losses, not less.
- Alberta Rancher Using Non-Lethal Predator Control (hasn't 'had' to shoot a wolf in years)
- Livestock Guardian Dogs Reduce Losses by 11-100% (utilized correctly they are extremely effective)
- Livestock Guardian Dogs Reduce Predation (according to Texas A&M University.)
- Please note that the wolf ranking terms 'alpha/beta/omega' have been debunked and are no longer in reputable scientific use. I wrote a thing about it here. Wolf packs are families, not militant groups of marauding monsters.
- All about why we don't use the wolf ranking terms alpha/beta/omega anymore which is why I depict Larch's natal pack in Knife Edge without these terms.

Recommended Books & Films About Wolves
- The Homeward Wolf by Kevin Van Tighem (a great account of wolf behaviour including detailing how wolves have generational knowledge and typically only hunt what their elders have taught them to except in rare circumstances such as in the case of a melanistic male in the Canadian Rockies who started hunting mountain goats instead of the elk that he had been raised on.)
- The Last Wolf by Jim Crumley (goes over the extirpation of the wolf from Scotland and over the misinformation surrounding wolves in great detail; an inspiring read.)
- In the Shadow of a Rainbow by Robert Franklin Leslie (a novel telling the story of a remarkable friendship between a man and a wild wolf which also gives evidence to lupine pre-genocide culture.)
- Island of the Sea Wolves published and streamed by Netflix, which gives an interesting account of a wolf family that has two breeding females in it, who amazingly help each other raise their pups!
- The International Wolf Centre's wonderfully long list of wolf books and media. (Doesn't include everything though.)

Other Wildlife Citations (Mostly About Cougars, Honestly.)
As a wildlife advocate you have to pick your battles so most of my focus is on predators, particularly wolves, cougars, coyotes, and sharks with a small measure of focus on spotted hyenas. I do also have a soft spot for beavers, however, as they are personally sacred to me and also extremely important to the environment, being an unusual keystone species that is a herbivore rather than a predator. Generally predators are the most influential animals in a habitat but beavers - and bison - are novel exceptions. (And actually, squirrels are too. Every animal is an important facet however without natural predators ecosystems crumble. Humans are not a replacement; compared to predators like wolves humans typically do an outlandishly terrible job of positively influencing the ecosystem.)
- The importance of predators (many more useful citations!)
- Why We NEED Predators (ScienceNews)
- Unmasking the myth of wildlife 'management.' (Yet more citations.)
- USDA's war on wildlife (again super well cited!)
- Cougars are NOT a threat to public safety (and more facts about these adorable large dog-sized purr machines.)
- Cougars also cause trophic cascades (in fact many predators do this.)
- Cougars are actually extremely social.
- Cougars are TERRIFIED of human chatter!
- Cougars are the bigfoot of cats. (Also as they are technically 'small' cats - and they honestly are very small compared to actual pantherine big cats like tigers and lions - we need to stop calling them big cats.)
- Want to solve wildfires and drought? Leave it to BEAVERS!
- How beavers restore wetland in deserts.
- Coyotes under siege and misunderstood.
- Why killing coyotes doesn't work.
- Starving bear mercifully euthanized; autopsy reveals plastic impaction in its intestines.
- Disease precautions for hunters.
- The ecological effects of livestock guarding dogs (LGDs) on target and non-target wildlife.
- Impact of clear-cut logging on forests.
- Ojibwe Spirit Horse - here before colonization? Plausible, yes considering horse remains found in the arctic.
- Is shark repellent a real thing? (Yes it is, and it's being developed in modern times to save sharks from humans.)
- To underline how very little top predators want to hurt us much less eat us, watch this video to see a tiger shark (one of the most infamous species of shark,) happily cuddle with her human researcher friend and recognize him after not seeing him for years!

Other Wildlife Books & Films
- Lethal Control, produced by Predator Defense (an organization which does an amazing job of thoroughly listing their information sources) and is a film about M-44 cyanide bombs which kill wildlife and pets alike.
- American Coyote by Dan Flores (be warned, some of the information in regards to wolves is incorrect but it is still an extremely interesting and illuminating account of the coyote, Canis latrans.)
- California Mountain Lions: The Legends of California by One Health Institute (ecology of cougars and why they are threatened.)
Favourite Information Sources & Organizations to Support
- Predator Defense
- International Wolf Centre
- Wolf Conservation Centre
- The Fur-Bearers
- Raincoast Conservation Foundation
- Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Centre

My Silly(?) Pet Peeves About Wolves
- How many Etsy stores flatout copy that silhouette of Kiba from Wolf's Rain howling with the moon behind him in their designs. Damnit, learn how to draw!!
- The whole moon association with wolves - no, they do not howl at the moon, they howl because it's fun, to communicate where they are/where prey is, to mourn, to locate family members, to express hunt victory (or alternatively "Come and get it!") Wolves probably do not give a damn about the moon.
- When people call baby wolves 'cubs' instead of 'pups' or 'puppies.' No. Wolves are a species of wild dog and baby dogs are puppies, therefore baby wolves are also puppies. Grr. 'Cub' to me implies a baby bear, or, heaven forbid, a pantherine kitten like a baby lion or tiger. Maybe hyenas too.
- Wolf haters, and how ludicrous it is that they've made something so simple so political. Wolves, like human uteruses, should not be political.
- Trophy hunters.
- How every wolf story is extremely fantastical instead of based upon any science.
- How no company ever makes accurately patterned wolf plushies.
- How cartoon wolves rarely look at all like real wolves.
- The fact that their common name is 'grey' wolf when at least in North America they commonly come in black too. I propose 'timber' wolf as a much more accurate name, as they are usually found in forests.
My Silly(?) Pet Peeves About Other Wildlife
- Trophy hunters. Please find a different way to prove that you have disposable income and that you are manly.
- When people call cougars/pumas 'mountain lions' because cougars are only very distantly related to real lions - they're on opposite sides of Felidae. Their closest relatives are jaguarundi, followed by cheetahs. Lions belong to Panthera along with tigers and leopards while cougars belong to the genus Puma. Additionally, cougars and puma are indigenous names while mountain lion is colonial. (Pumas are found in South America, cougars live in North America; same species but different subspecies due to differing habitats and prey.) 'Cougar' is derived from an indigenous Tupi (Brazil) word, çuçuarana.
- When people misuse the word 'cougar' to describe women. Ugh. Stop.
- The name 'black bear' because black bears come in a whole rainbow of colours including whie (spirit/kermode,) glacier (it's like blue roan for bears,) cinnamon, blonde and chocolate.

Dear DC Writers… It’s Time To Bring Back Bruce Wayne.
Dear DC Writers,
Please bring back Bruce Wayne.
Don’t get me wrong I love Batman.
Always have.
But Bruce Wayne was the character that pulled me into comics.
The Bruce Wayne that ran a victims advocacy charity and used his Yale LAW degree to fight for victims rights. The character that took on slum lords and big business loan sharks.
Who volunteered at soup kitchens. Or gathered evidence for the FBI regarding prescription drug price fixing by Gotham’s elite. The character that fought for libraries on every street corner in Gotham. The character that helped Leslie run and fund medical clinics.
I want to see Bruce being called the Justice League’s “mob lawyer” by Lex Luthor or a Steve Bannon character.
I want to Bruce Wayne go head to head with a Alex Jones character. Because Bruce Wayne knows what it’s like to lose a loved to violence and have people try to exploit that tragedy. I want him adding his voice to the growing of people that’s lost loved ones to gun violence.
I want to see him standing up to people in power targeting minorities for violence. Because fuck that. The Bruce Wayne I grew up reading HATES bullies.
I want to see him react with other characters like Hal Jordan knowing that there’s people in this country that want him dead because his mother was Jewish. I want him to do a family project with Damian and realize that his mother’s branch of the family tree was the only one that survived Shoah.
I love Batman.
But Bruce Wayne is more relevant than ever.
It’s time to bring him back.

Growing evidence makes this clearer by the day: Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) does not help American institutions attain progress or profit.
It’s time for all institutions to get back to their basic duties and stop pushing extreme agendas on the American people. This is especially important for American corporations that have a fiduciary obligation to make decisions in the best financial interests of their shareholders.
A growing chorus of Americans recognizes the acute challenges of DEI. Even the co-founder and CEO of a prominent DEI consulting firm laments assuming the role of “moral authority” on the subject and regrets labeling people who disagree with DEI as “bad” people.
The controversy over DEI has also captured the attention of two well-known businessmen, Mark Cuban and Bill Ackman, both of whom have engaged in a tense exchange on X, formerly Twitter.
Cuban, the Dallas Mavericks owner and star of “Shark Tank,” wrote, “Diversity—means you expand the possible pool of candidates as widely as you can. Once you have identified the candidates, you hire the person you believe is the best.”
“That’s exactly what I thought until I did the work,” said Ackman, the founder of Pershing Square Capital Management and Democrat mega-donor. “I encourage you to do the same and revert. DEI is not about diversity, equity or inclusion. Trust me. I fell for the same trap you did.”
In the same post, Ackman explained that DEI is “a political advocacy movement on behalf of certain groups that are deemed oppressed under DEI’s own methodology.”
In simplest terms, what Ackman and others critical of DEI have identified is the inherently flawed nature of the ideology. By insisting that our institutions are irredeemable and cannot escape past wrongs or that people groups should be divided into two camps — oppressed and oppressor — the adherents of DEI are compelled to use the levers of those very same institutions to manipulate outcomes based on identity rather than merit.
This conduct is dangerous when you consider its effects on our economy and our public corporations.
Good business is ultimately about producing a good product, not pushing an agenda. DEI unnecessarily complicates that winning American formula. Rather than focus on improving production and goods, companies are now choosing to divert resources and attention to internal race and identity-based policies that neither improve return on investment to shareholders nor result in better products for consumers.
Corporations adopting policies that prioritize social engineering over corporate responsibility do not serve the interests of all Americans. Instead, they appease the extreme desires of a few, thereby eroding confidence in the ability and competency of our institutions.
It is neither profitable for businesses nor sustainable for the American people.
Along the same lines, those in the financial services industry must understand that fiduciaries must have a single-minded purpose in the returns on their beneficiaries’ investments.
State and federal law have long recognized fiduciary duties for those who manage other people’s money. The Employee Retirement Income Security Act, for example, demands that a fiduciary “discharge that person’s duties with respect to the plan solely in the interests of the participants and beneficiaries, for the exclusive purpose of providing benefits to participants and their beneficiaries …”
As attorney general of Kentucky, I was one of 22 state attorneys general who signed a letter warning financial services companies that they may be violating their fiduciary responsibility to shareholders by agreeing to radical activism in their environmental proposals. I also issued a legal opinion outlining why government-sponsored racial discrimination and so-called “stakeholder capitalism” was unlawful.
We’ve collectively witnessed some of the consequences of extreme ideology taking priority over responsible corporate governance. After Bud Light’s infamous foray into the culture wars, its sales collapsed, forcing one of its executives to step down. We’ve also seen prominent fund managers like Vanguard drop ESG-driven investments — another ideological blunder at the corporate level — because they have not been profitable and have exposed their investors to greater losses.
DEI objectives have moved some of our business so far from their purpose that even those on the left like Ackman are compelled to speak out, underscoring that the adverse reaction to DEI is not a partisan issue.
Most Americans want our corporate institutions to move away from extreme ideologies. It’s time to return to the American formula of producing great products and services, not pushing agendas.
Daniel Cameron is the former attorney general of Kentucky and the current CEO of the 1792 Exchange.

There is nothing wrong with being mindful of your own personal safety.
We all have a right to feel uncomfortable, and to act accordingly. It’s okay to cross the road to avoid others, I do this myself.
So too we should all be mindful of how we can make others feel safer when walking home at night – this is just basic common decency.
But what isn’t okay; is to fear monger, vilify and create a cultural panic around ‘men’ as a group.
To talk about men as if they’re monsters forever lurking the shadows; comparing experiences with men to walking through a room of snakes, or swimming in a shark tank, and yes, eating from a bowl of poisoned M&Ms.
This is not advocacy. This is ignorance, and hate.
Neither do such thought experiments help women ‘feel safe’ either. In fact, such terrifying analogies will likely make them feel the opposite.
Neither do you get to tell men (who are at a significantly higher risk), that they can walk the streets at whatever time they like, without fear or consequence – under the protective shield of so called ‘male privilege’.
Walking home at night is not an opportunity for you to inject your bigoted political ideas around men, or stoke fear and division.
I am tired of it.
I am tired of the endless pearl clutching.
I am tired of seeing the conversation of violent crime centred on highly privileged millionaire celebrity women, who are not at risk, and taken away from those who are – which is young, inner city, working class black boys.
I am tired of the conversation making no effort to understand what shapes violent crime, or how to reduce it, to instead fan the flames of a gender war.
I am tired of seeing tragic stories hijacked for political ends, to become yet another bludgeon to hit ‘yes all men’ with.
It is boring. It is divisive. And most of all, it doesn’t achieve anything.
So let’s look at the numbers, for a more reasonable and evidence based insight into violent crime.

Xians will thank their god for everything good in their lives, but are pathologically incapable of blaming it for the bad things that happen. It's either "free will" or "Satan" or some other excuse. This is hypocritical.
If you blame men as a category for violent crime, then you can also give credit to men as a category for the decline of violent crime over the years. To not do so would also be hypocritical.
Or you just blame the extreme minority who are actually responsible.
And if you're still like, nope, changes nothing, then okay. But just do one thing for me. Type: "I'm justified crossing the road when I encounter..." Then go look up violent crime by race, pro rata it, and see how you feel about finishing that sentence. I dare you. If one would make you feel racist about making assumptions about and blaming all members of one group, then the other should also make you feel sexist about making assumptions about and blaming all members of another group.
In fact, such terrifying analogies will likely make them feel the opposite.
This is, of course, a feature not a bug. Women's fear is a valuable political and ideological commodity.
"... as we know from the war on drugs and the war on terror, for those in the business of providing protection, high threat levels are bread and butter. Likewise, for those in the business of healing race relations, racial division is your sworn enemy but your secret friend—so much so that wounding and healing become part of the same operation." -- Lyell Asher, "Why Colleges Are Becoming Cults."
The same thing applies here. The point of stupid analogies and stories is the same as the threat of hell: to control and manipulate, to gain authority by building dependence through fostering fear.
When someone is encouraging you to be afraid, stop for a moment and ask yourself, why. What do they get out of it?

Sorry…ma’am…excuse me…but did you say Prince George attends an event and meets Mr Hamilton…and Mr Hamilton’s husband????? W h a t? Please I’m begging you I need a little more clarity on that. What do mr Hamilton and his darling husband do?? Is it Sir Hamilton in this universe as well?? Does George watch them openly hold hands and kiss each other on the cheek and Sebastian(I assume??) sweep his husband into a waltz and want to die from envy and wondering what it would feel like to be able to love so freely??? 😭
anon thank you SO much for allowing my joker moment about prince au - seb/lewis version oh my god! (gifset and tags in question here)
so mr lewis hamilton (he will be sir, but is mr just yet) is a philanthropist: he runs a sports charity, dabbles in fashion, is a UN ambassador. his husband, a herr sebastian vettel (you assume correctly) is a university professor focusing on environmental/sustainability development.
they met years ago at a fancy reception hosted about “social issues” where lewis was invited for his activism and seb because he teaches environmental governance and is a big deal in international advocacy. the keynote speaker stressed the importance of collaboration and listening to experts in the field and then handed off the mic and ‘unfortunately had to leave for an engagement arranged prior’. seb made an offhand comment about how politicians still don’t know how to practice what they preach and lewis snorted into his champagne flute. they had been aware of each other before but never really talked: but during this event they gravitated back to each other throughout the evening, having the time of their life, slyly exchanging info and gossip.
anyway! back to our dashing prince. so he goes to this gala without charlotte (who’s abroad, visiting family or a girl’s trip). jenson is a few steps behind him as always, he's talking to lewis, discussing the recent developments of lewis's sports charity.
and then a guy appears with two glasses of champagne, passing one to lewis with a quick kiss and a casual "it's vegan, i asked." and lewis huffs amusedly, leans closer to george and says "please excuse my husband, sir, he's german," like they are sharing a joke. and george has to work VERY hard on his eyebrows not shooting up to space. his husband. his HUSBAND. so casually. and he can’t ignore the proprietary hand with the glinting gold on lewis's waist. like it's allowed.
and then george has this reflexive internal slap - of course for other people maybe. insane that they’re just, out here, being - out. but good for them, obviously. it’s just not for him, whether he wants it or not. and anyway. however regal lewis looks in his red suit, he is a commoner. george should have noticed the ring on lewis’s finger or read the brief more carefully. he should’ve known. and then he and seb shake hands and the wedding band burns like a brand against george’s skin.
he’s never? seen a gay couple at these events. or maybe he just didn’t notice but. unlikely. maybe they were better at keeping things under wraps because mr hamilton and mr vettel really are unbothered. seb asks the waiters about every single hors d'oeuvre: is it vegan? he disappears from time to time to chat with a policy advisor or a minister, his smile like a shark as he follows up about public policies promised but never delivered. and there’s of course live music in one of the corners and george has this horrible, open view of when lewis and seb are just about to leave and then lewis pulls seb close and leads him through a few steps, laughing easily. seb is a bit clumsy but gracious about it, kisses lewis’s fingers after and then they step out of the room, still holding hands.

Week 4:  "Shark Tank": Unveiling Entrepreneurial Narratives in Digital Communities
In the BBC article “Why reality TV deserves more credit”, Louis Staples delves into the intriguing world of reality television. Despite its often-dismissed reputation, reality TV merits recognition. The article highlights how shows like “Made in Chelsea” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” have left their mark. While reality TV may not always receive critical acclaim, its impact is undeniable. Over the last two decades, it has grown exponentially, influencing culture and catapulting ordinary people to stardom. From Paris Hilton to the Kardashians, reality stars have become A-list celebrities. Even Donald Trump’s journey from reality TV to the presidency underscores its significance.
Tumblr media
"Shark Tank," a paradigmatic reality TV series, transcends its ostensible role as a platform for business pitches. It serves as a captivating amalgamation of innovation, drama, and high-stakes negotiations, with entrepreneurs seeking investment from seasoned investors—the formidable "Sharks." This essay undertakes an academic exploration of how "Shark Tank" shapes digital communities and fosters entrepreneurial fandoms. Silverstone's advocacy for conceptualizing audiences as rooted in 'the reality of experience' becomes relevant in this exploration. This perspective emphasizes that experiences, including those derived from media consumption, possess inherent authenticity. (Silverstone, 1999)
"Shark Tank" establishes a virtual arena wherein entrepreneurs navigate nerves, rehearse pitches, and strategically present their ventures. Viewers seamlessly integrate into this community, participating in the collective experience by rallying behind favorite contestants and offering critiques on business acumen.
Certain pitches evoke profound resonance among the audience. Whether featuring a quirky invention, a heartwarming backstory, or a disruptive tech solution, these entrepreneurs garner a devoted following. The utilization of the #SharkTank hashtag on digital platforms has become a hub of excitement, serving as a space for fans to discuss deals, predict outcomes, and even share their entrepreneurial ideas. There is a power chronology at work in the temporal relations between television itself and audiences. (Hill, 2019)
The inherent premise of "Shark Tank"—investors vying for equity—sparks ethical inquiries. Questions arise about the fairness of rigorous negotiations with struggling entrepreneurs and whether the pursuit of profit occasionally overshadows empathy. The digital community actively grapples with these dilemmas, forming nuanced judgments.
In essence, "Shark Tank" transcends the conventional confines of reality TV by becoming a celebration of dreams and determination. The digital discourse surrounding the show transforms viewers into integral members of a global entrepreneurial community—one that appreciates risk-taking, applauds creativity, and believes in the transformative power of a well-crafted pitch. Whether one identifies as a Shark or a viewer, it is essential to recognize that every idea pitched is an opportunity to navigate the entrepreneurial waters and make waves in the vast ocean of business.

Reflections from a volcano in the middle of nowhere
Written from: Una Una, Togean Islands, Central Sulawesi
Tumblr media
Pictured: Views from a sunrise run
After uprooting my life to live on a small volcanic island in the middle of nowhere 12,000km from home, it was inevitable that I would spend some time questioning my decision. Not least due to my own (totally misplaced) need to justify such a dramatic departure from the life that someone of my age and background is expected to live - including leaving the best support network that anyone could ever dream of, a beautiful home, and a career in environmental advocacy which felt like cheating because I enjoyed it so much.
However, what I used to self-consciously refer to as my "fake" life - which involved moving to a tropical island to dive and drink coconuts every day - has, in two short months, taught me so much more about humanity and what it means to rely on a healthy environment than I ever could have learned back home. This is without doubt the biggest dose of reality that I have ever been faced with, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
I first came to Una Una four months after receiving a malignant melanoma diagnosis that left me with lots of stitches, an MRSA infection and an inability to look forward to anything just in case it got taken away from me again. Having tried and failed to come here three times since 2012, when I finally received the green light from my doctor to travel to this tiny dot on the equator, it had a lot to live up to. I shouldn't have worried, because I have never felt more myself than the first time I floated on top of the reef, came across a famliy of bumphead parrotfish and watched the sun set over Una Una's impeccably forested Colo volcano.
Tumblr media
Pictured: The crater at Mt Colo
This is a place where the ferry schedule is dictated by the size of coconut harvest - the thing that the majority of islanders rely on for their income. Where fishermen still whittle their canoes out of tree trunks, and where the entire population (rumoured to be 500 people) rely on their catch for sustenance.  Where alcohol is distilled from palm leaves and drunk from plastic bags. Where the ongoing threat of a volcanic eruption looms over everyone who lives here. Where there are no formal electricity, water, health or rubbish facilities. Where medical support is scarce, education is only provided up to the age of 13, and most buildings cannot be expected to last beyond a few short years. It is also home to the friendliest and most supportive community that I have ever been a part of.
In this environment, a threat to the trees, beaches or reefs is a threat to everyone who lives here. However, just because it is critical to protect these essential resources, it does not follow that it is easy. Una Una is located in the Gulf of Tomini, within the 3,600 Km2 Kepulaun National Park that includes all 66 of the Togean islands. Unfortunately, it is conservation area in name rather than nature - a "paper park", with limited oversight and little evidence that the nominal (and soon to increase) park entrance fee does anything to support its residents, or protect it from exploitation.
Tumblr media
Pictures: Coconuts being loaded onto the ferry
For example, last week I walked past a group of at least 30 men whose daily practice of stealing sand from Una Una for construction is causing devastating coastal erosion.  Only yesterday, our staff found the severed head of a black-tipped reef shark floating above Pinnacle 1 - the dive site located within viewing distance of our dive centre where an unknown fishing boat had been loitering suspiciously the day before. Upon investigation, it seems that rich Indonesians have a habit of bribing locals to help them catch sharks, reportedly using dolphin heads as bait.
Today, we received a dynamite fishing alert when a boat full of Bajau people from another island was spotted speeding towards Apollo, a dive site to the West of Una Una where we take guests to see schooling barracuda at least two times a week. Driven by bribery, corruption and sheer desperation, the Bajau people have developed a practice of making bombs out of fertiliser and using them to speed up the fishing process. Let that sink in: a people whose reliance on coral reefs is so ingrained that that they have genetically evolved to favour free diving, is now actively destroying those reefs, in a way that poses real danger to theirs an other's lives, in an area that is supposedly dedicated towards marine conservation.
Tumblr media
Pictured: A shark head found on our local dive site, reportedly caught using dolphin heads as bait.
Clearly, they are complex dynamics at play here, and as the newest non-Indonesian resident of the Togean islands, I know next to nothing about how one might start to address them.  I certainly can't claim a moral high ground - I come from a country that was built on the spoils of exploitation and I took about a hundred flights to get here - nor do I have any right to determine whether one people's needs on this islands are greater than another's. I also don't want to get embroiled in reporting environmental crimes when, more often than not, it results in the families of the whistleblowers receiving death threats from those involved.
What I can say is this: everyone on this island deserves to benefit from their active, courageous and continuous decision to protect rather than exploit the nature that surrounds it. And if Una Una's residents don't have the power, means or time protect it from the greed and desperation of others, then those who do, including those who work for the National Park and across the Togean archipelago's various resorts, have an obligation to intervene on their behalf. The plans that we have on Una Una already span advocacy, education, plastic removal and conversion and coral propagation, but that is the only the beginning: there is so, so much more that we can be doing to help.
Tumblr media
Pictured: A local resident off on a sunset fishing trip
I have so much to learn from those who have been navigating the complex dynamics of remote archipelago living for far longer than I have, and who are already working to address some of these challenges. For example, the residents of Una Una who have taught me everything I know, or the amazing Togean Conservation Foundation, which was working to support Bajau people to develop alternative livelihoods in seaweed farming before the pandemic crashed the global market. So instead of trivialising a phase of my life that I once described as "pretend", I will instead be using it to try and make a meaningful difference for those who have so generously welcomed me into their community. Rest assured that (internet allowing) I’ll be sharing what I learn along the way, one coral fragment / impassioned letter / beach clean / WhatsApp group or dive site stakeout at at a time.
