A Good Marriage by Kimberly McCreight was a May #botm pick. “Lizzie is working late at her law firm when she gets a collect call from a prisoner at Rikers - who happens to be an old law school classmate. His wife was murdered and the police think he did it. He wants her help. As Lizzie digs into the facts of the case she discovers that Amanda and Zach weren’t what they seemed, and that their friends might also be keeping secrets...” The setup for this book is typical for many current thrillers. Start with the crime and then go back and revisit what led to it while keeping up with the current events. McCreight makes it work here, especially with the audiobook. There’s a lot of commentary on the challenges of a long marriage. All of the main couples have some issues, especially the couple that has an annual sex party (that’s just crazy talk 🤨) And so many secrets 😮 You will not like Zach 😡 but there is always karma. The killer was a surprise 😮 Looking back there were some clues but l didn’t catch them. A very good thriller from McCreight with some great characters. Thanks also, for using the phrase “gimlet-eyed” which—after looking up—shall henceforth be my new nickname. Here’s the excerpted review: “What makes a good marriage — in fact and fiction? Kimberly McCreight takes a gimlet-eyed attempt at answering that question in the irresistible domestic drama ‘A Good Marriage.’ McCreight made her name with her 2013 novel ‘Reconstructing Amelia’ in which a mother seeks answers about her daughter’s death at an exclusive Park Slope, Brooklyn school. The novel, which is filled with titillating details — there are sex parties, blackmail and pornography — has been optioned for a TV series by Nicole Kidman, who was perhaps drawn to its similarities to ‘Big Little Lies.’ The real mystery, though, is not the identity of the killer, but the answer to that age old question about solid marriages. The wives and husbands toss around enough cliches to fill a king-size marital bed. ‘Low expectations’ and ‘Absence makes the heart grow fonder’ are just two.
