Ahab alone is enough to die.

The line is tangled around Fedallah the most; wrapping twice around his neck and tangled all over his chest. With his free hand, Fedallah grasps onto Ahab’s waist. The line finally wraps around Pip, who is clinging to Ahab’s sleeve, and pulling at the line in front of Ahab’s chest. Pip’s mouth is open as if he is calling out, and the harpoon line circles around his shoulders, and finally hangs from his arm. Behind all of the characters looms the massive shape of the whale, Moby-Dick. Moby-Dick’s skin is wrinkled and scarred, and one massive eye stares down at the scene before him.

Character designs: Ahab is a large Arab man with short, curly, dark, greying hair, a pointed beard, and scars across the bridge of his nose, and over his lip. the ID for this is long enough already, so I’ll keep this brief, but hi I have spent weeks on this piece and it genuinely feels like a magnum opus or something. this is possibly my favorite thing I’ve drawn all year. designs as always from the delightful @pocketsizedquasar ‘s Moby Dick comic!

anyways I am constantly anguishing about the fact that Ahab thinks of himself as the lone sacrifice in his doomed journey, the one “enough to die”, but in reality, everyone who loves him, who tries to save him, faces his punishment first. Ahab ISN’T alone, despite what he thinks, and that connection directly gets the three closest people in his life killed. how am i ever supposed to recover from that.

making up a guy to get mad at can actually be really lovely and rewarding like for example i was feeling understimulated so i crafted an alternate world where moby dick was super popular on tumblr and the most popular ship from moby dick was ahab x humanized whaleboy merguy moby dick who was always drawn as like a skinny little white guy with white hair and sharp teeth and sort of unusual eyes like maybe with black scleras or something. and it was literally inescapable and people made like hannigram aus where will was ahab and hannibal was moby dick and people also made human!boatless!modern! aus of ahab x moby dick where they were just like normal guys as well. and the moby dick fandom all thought they were so cool and countercultural because melville's unfinished novella billy budd was also really popular and the billy budd fans were at odds with the moby dick fans because billy budd fans described it as like a heartfelt queer story in comparison to moby dick being toxic and soulless (because ahab was trying to kill moby dick in canon) and moby dick fans described billy budd as basically steven universe but none of this ended up mattering because in four years the meteors came and all life on earth was lost

I can't be the first person to make this observation, but it's just struck me that Captain Ahab from Moby-Dick and Thomas Blanky from The Terror represent the opposite ends of a spectrum—"How well do you cope with losing your leg to a huge white beast that destroys hubristic seafaring men?"

The problem with Glitch is that you could play the actual, literary Captain Ahab as a player character with no changes whatsoever, and it would work fine by the rules-as-written, but you'd be up there trying to do a thing about the self-destructive nature of spite and everybody else would just be joking that your Affliction is "dying of whales".

yeah ok so i read a rly deeply phenomenal Holmes genderbend fic by @dickwheelie a bit ago and it inspired me to go insane abt genderbending my own classic lit men so. voila pls enjoy starhab but as butches.

some thoughts: I think both Ahab and Starbuck initially were "undercover" as men at whaling and then Ahab eventually started doing whatever once she got relative job security, but Starbuck goes back and forth on what presentation she's comfortable with. gender is weird for both of them but still giving very bigender vibes from Starb. they both go by 'sir' still tho. designs based on @pocketsizedquasar 's designs as always :3

Propaganda

Crozier has alcohol problems but stands up when he's needed; he and everyone he answers for are stranded in the coldest place of the Earth after he's warned the previous captain of the expedition to find the north-west passage; yet he /still/ rises up for the occasion eventually for damage control; he has a noble heart; he commands one of the most beautiful warship of the 19th century; he is a little bit cringefail; his love life is a drama; he opens up to his second in command when all is mostly lost; he tries so hard to save the crew; he fails.

what is a captain tournament without ahab tbh? moby dick (whale) bit his leg off in true dick fashion and ahab ditches all efforts of actually whaling to kill him for it. (well not ALL efforts but like. quite a few.) the pettiest bitch ever. had a new leg made out of whale bone SPECIFICALLY. has a hole in the deck where he just. pivots from. loser. has gay tension with his first mate starbuck also i don't know if that matters

re: Moby Dick & Limbus Compny

I appreciate that LC both understands that the White Whale is just the embodiment of Captain Ahab's obsession and could be literally anything AND that we can make the White Whale a terrifying cosmic horror. The villain of the story isn't the whale, it's Ahab. In that sense, the parallels between Ahab and the Whale as beings that twist and consume those around them before throwing them away shows how the monster is man. The Whale is just an animal but humans are only ever a few steps away from being animals themselves.

That said holy shit the Pallid Whale and its spawn are so fucking cool.
