How do you feel about the increase in really weird NSFW ads on here (advertising panels that look like sexual encounters, and AI art apps that pride themselves on porn) but will take down NSFW posts from their users, even if it isn't technically sexual.

i hate all social media and it's consistent prioritising the advertisers over the users and the internet simply was a better place before capitalism sunk its hooks into it

#i could write essays about how capitalism ruined the internet.#i was actually talking to someone earlier today about how youtube was kind of effectively ruined by monetisation.#and they were raised in the soviet union and we had a bit of a talk about how art was better because it wasn't for profit.#the people who made art made it because they wanted to do it and because they loved it.#she said that communism was terrible for every aspect of life for her. people's lives under communism wasn't pretty.#but the art was better. and i feel like it's true for the internet – it was better when it was a free-for-all.#the companies didn't know how to exploit it yet and turn it into a neverending profit-driven hellscape.#people created content because they wanted to. because they wanted to make something silly to make people laugh.#not for profit. not for gain. not for numbers. not to further their career.#i miss the days of newgrounds and youtube before monetisation.#capitalism has soiled everything that's joyful and good in this world.#people should be able to share whatever they want.#people should be able to tell any story they want without the fear of being silenced by advertisers.#that's what made the internet so beautiful before. anyone could do anything and we all had equal footing.#but now we're victims of the algorithm. and it makes me sick.#i'm quitting my job in social media. i'm quitting it. it makes me too depressed. i have an existential crisis every freaking day.#every day i wake up and say "ah. this is the fucking hell we live in #i'm so sorry i feel so passionate about this.#social media is a black hole and it is actively destroying humanity. forget ai. social media is what's doing it.#i miss how beautiful the internet used to be. it should've been a tool for good. but it's corrupt and evil now.#sci speaks

Some people need AI to make their fics this isn't as cut and dry and you and your friends are making it out to be. It's a tool that helps people be creative. Please try to be more open minded

I really don't want to dignify this with a full response because I feel like I have made my points clear on this issue.

HOWEVER

It's all fun and games until you need your precious little AI to write a fanfiction about your characters building a pipe bomb

#I can write my characters building and using a pipe bomb #with the power of research and my own two hands #but guess what you can't do that with AI #so really how is a tool that limits what you can “prompt” about any good for creative writing #and it's only creative if you use your human brain to write the story #otherwise you are just generating lower common demoniator slop content #anti AI #also pretty sure it wont do smut either #like seriously what are you even doing?#prompting within a limited set of guidelines that the AI lets you prompt #that's anti-creativity

#‘more quality art means you artists have higher expectations now oooh why not give up and convert to the slop machine’ buddy you are showing #that some people can’t even bother to make effort that surface level quality means nothing people who care are infinitely more impressive #like if you ever feel bad about your art know that the fact that you even bothered to pick up a pencil makes you infinitely better and more #respectable than the people with a lack of critical thinking skills like idgaf if your microwave meal looks good because it stole fromactual #good art your stuff means nothing other than a churned out piece of content to consume and throw away and you can’t even call yourself Ann #artist because you didn’t do anything than write adjectives and hit the random image generator built off actual artists work #and since all ai art can only mimic actual art there is never going to be anything ai does that an artist cant to better #so like the bar literally can’t be raised because it’s already been done before #thinking about since commissioning just produces better art and there straight up isn’t any thought or meaning to make ai art worthwhile #as it only creates amalgamations of what it thinks looks good ai art on a fundamental level can only be used for meaningless slop #and maybe tools for artists but there are other non-generative alternatives with less moral problems sooooooo #everyone including the White House posting ai ghibli stuff not knowing r caring that they were the villain in all their stories the irony #tempestmothtalk #sorry sorry generative ai just makes me see red

to talk about AI in art more specifically, I think in so far as AI has any legitimate use in art, it's exclusively as an artistic aid. if you generate an AI image of a character, then draw on top of it using it as a loose reference (I'm not talking about tracing here), that's not really any different than using any other photo reference or inspiration. if you feed all of a character's dialogue to an AI, then have it crosscheck versus dialogue you wrote for them and make adjustments to your writing (I'm not talking about copying and pasting here), that's not really any different than having someone beta-read for voice or doing it manually yourself. it can be an effective tool for doing very specific and technical things faster and thus developing a better personal artistic intuition for them. it's acceptable as training wheels, like spellcheck but much more sophisticated

what is broadly unacceptable is to just let AI generate something and release it into the wild as-is or edited. AI making your life easier or giving you more confidence in making your art is fine. using AI to substitute for and try and shortcut the artistic process is not

#Out Of Character #PSA #[ I don't think this is a hot take ]#[ AI is a tool to make content creation easier ]#[ it's just that unlike prior tools it can be abused to 'make content' unto itself ]#[ but this is a difference of user intent not of the tool ]#[ it's true that how AI scrapes data for training often abrogates consent ]#[ however if nothing was ever done with that data ]#[ nobody would really care ]#[ because data is always being collated ]#[ it's that the data is being used ]#[ and more specifically how it's being used ]#[ that are the real problems ]#[ I personally don't use AI for writing ]#[ and it'd be dubious as it currently stands to use it as a model ]#[ for visual art of ships ]#[ which is what I'd use it for ]#[ in terms of graphics ]#[ because I'm not a properly trained artist ]#[ but I think there is an ETHICAL way to use it ]#[ the trouble is people using it UNETHICALLY ]#[ and it is very easy to use unethically ]#[ but the problem is the lack of ethics ]
