The Sword Between
A brand new Hakizana AU written for @krispy-kream! This starts a little in media res; Izana is posing as a common mercenary under House Arleon, assigned to watch over the Earl’s daughter...who is also his betrothed.
There’s a flash against the snow, quick as a hare through a drift. Haki shifts on her cushion, peering through the lattice of her windowpane. The women’s wing might be as far from any area of import as her father can manage, but it does afford her a clear view of the entrance. A useless feature normally; visitors of any interest are few and far between this far north, but now, now--
There’s plenty of reason to be looking outside.
Cold seeps through the glass, blunted only by the shawl drawn about her shoulders, and Haki wraps her hands tightly around her tea. There’s a sleigh, dashing through the courtyard, spraying snow as it rounds before the doors.
“Ah,” she hums, taking a sip from her mug. “It seems Lady Satomi has arrived.”
The Maid of Varghala descends from her conveyance with the same sultry elegance than won her mother an earl. Or at least, so it is said; she’d only met the woman once, back when she was just a babe, and her memory of her was little more than dark skin wrapped in blue silk and the awe of a child when they are brought face to face with such beauty.
“Strange.” She leans close, trying to catch a glimpse of dark hair beneath the blinding white fun. “I’d always thought she’d be the kind to make a grand entrance. You know, an hour late clad only in gold leaf.”
Haki settles back against a pillow, pulling the shawl tighter over her shoulders. If the night was cold, then the silence that envelops her room is colder.
“I wonder what plans she has, coming this early,” she remarks, thrilled when her voice bends into a diffident drawl. “Maybe she has designs on Makiri.”
A snort lets her know just what her audience thinks of that particular guess. She scowls at the window, picking out his gold head in the reflection. Lowen excels at being a certain kind of frustrating, and tonight is no exception.
“Well then.” She turns to him, expression composed entirely of a patience and mildness she does not feel. “You do have an opinion after all.”
Lowen is half-shadowed so close to her hearth, but even still, she sees how his mouth curves ever so slightly at a corner. High amusement, from a man such as him. “I always have an opinion, my lady.”
She bites her lip to keep it from jutting into a pout. “Of course. You just do not always deign to share it.”
He huffs out a laugh, his head shaking. “I do not always dare to share it, my lady.”
The deep indigo of his eyes is piercing even in the dim, pinning her in her place like one of the butterflies at the university. Her fingers twist in the wool of her shawl. How easily he can do that, reminding her of the gulf between them. “You know I do not mind if you speak freely.”
She would prefer it, longs for it, but-- that is not something to be said. Not now. Not when she can already see the tension coiled in his legs, the anxious energy that has dogged him all night. Lowen might put himself between her and a hundred blades to keep her safe, but tonight--
Tonight, a simple dance has made him poised to flee.
“How would you know?” The arch of his brows and the curve of his mouth may read simple curiosity, but Haki knows him too well to miss the mocking tilt of his chin, the cold reason in his eyes. “You have never heard it.”
“Fine.” She folds her arms beneath her breast, hoping she looks insolent and seductive, but the way his lips twitch tells her she’s missed the mark and hit sullen and petulant instead. “Then what is your theory about Lady Satomi’s motives? If it is not my brother drawing her so early, who could it be?” She lifts a dubious eyebrow. “You?”
His lips bow as if he has a secret and she is a fool not to know it. “I can firmly say that neither I nor your brother would suit the lady’s tastes.”
Haki frowns. “What does that mean?”
“Nothing, my lady.” His gaze drops, following the smooth motion of the cloth over his blade. “However, from what I have observed of Varghala’s Maid, she is less likely to be drawn to a place by a who rather than a what.”
Her father has taught her better than to show her surprise, but it still takes her a moment to manage, “And what do you think that is?”
“Why, my lady,” he drawls, his smile glinting coldly in the light, “I could not even venture a guess. Perhaps she only wished to be ahead of the storm.”
Haki peers out the window, watching as the flakes swirl furiously outside the pane. If that was her goal, Lady Satomi chose a poor night for travel. “Do you think it will storm the night of the party?”
“If it does, it won’t matter,” he says easily. “All your guests will have arrived in plenty of time to attend. Unless you think Lady Satomi is the only one who would take advantage of your father’s generosity?”
Generosity. She huffs out a laugh. He knows as well as she that no lord hosted a ball for only a single night. Maybe in the south, where everyone had their sprawling manors in the capitol, and it was only a matter of minutes between a guest’s door and their destination. But in the north--
Well, even here in Wilant, there were few neighbors within a stone’s throw that could boast a title. And her father would have nothing if not the choicest of lords for his daughter’s birthday fete.
It was no feat to ponder why. “I wonder if my fiancé will deign to attend.”
Lowen stiffens, hand still on his blade. Haki smothers a smile as she continues blithely, “It’s only a year until we’ll be married, after all. If he chooses to attend the wedding.”
With a stuttering pace, his hands once again start their slow grind of stone against steel. Haki waits.
“Perhaps,” he grits out, every syllable begrudging.
She takes a long sip from her mug, enjoying how bloodless her guard has become. “Surely he must be curious about his bride.”
“Or he might be practical.” Lowen lifts his brows if not his gaze, the hint of a smile hovering at the shadows of his mouth. “If he has no choice in marrying you, there is no point in traveling all the way north to mark your measure.”
Haki draws herself up, affronted. “By all accounts, Izana Wisteria is a profligate dandy who only cares for excess. A man like that would surely come, if only to know whether I meet his standards for a lover.”
“Oh, my lady.” His gaze meets hers, dark in the flame, and oh, Lowen’s grin is as wickedly sharp as his blade. “Every woman looks the same in the dark.”
Haki hardly knows she’s gaping until her jaw aches, mouth gone dry in the silence. She shuts it, delicately, teeth making a soft click as they meet.
He lets out a bark of a laugh, eyes shifting back to his lap. “You are not a lover, my lady, but a wife. All he would need to do is hold his nose and do enough of the deed to get an heir on you.”
It is the heat of the fire that makes her flush, not-- not anything else. Silly Ami always made it far too hot in the evenings.
She stands, and with the practiced elegance of a woman meant to be queen, scampers to the hearth. It’s nothing to push the log back, to push some of the ashes on top of it, but--
“Is something the matter, my lady?” her guard asks her, far too innocent. “Too hot for you, perhaps?”
--Lowen notices. He always does; there is nothing about her that ever escapes his notice. She pokes at the fire, if only to have some sort of occupation, anything to keep from having to meet his too-inquisitive gaze.
“To think,” she mumbles, hunching her shoulders, “you said you do not speak your mind.”
“And to think,” he says, pointedly loud, “you said you would enjoy it.”
She favors him with a glare, mouth pulled thin. Wanting him would be so much easier if he did not make her regret it so often. “The point is moot,” she snips, dropping the poker back in the stand. “He won’t be here. Last I hear he was still on his grand tour.”
Lowen’s jaw tightens. “Is that what you’ve heard?”
“Everyone knows,” she tells him airily, taking the seat across from him. It’s easier to talk to him this way, when he’s not so reminded of the gulf between her place and his. “He’s only been on it, what is it, two years now?”
His mouth twitches. “Something like. But surely a lady of your standing would not judge a man for his wanderlust?”
“Of course not.” She lets her mouth tilt into a knowing smile. “But I will judge him for the women and drink.”
That draws him up sharp, for a moment. “My lady,” he begins, almost haltingly. “Just because a man travels abroad does not mean he is spending it carousing in taverns.”
“Oh, no, definitely not,” she agrees, so easily his gazes turns wary. “A man of the prince’s stature gets soused at manor houses and has the courtesans brought to him.”
Lowen’s mouth thins. “Makiri tells you too much.”
“I rather think he tells me just enough.” She cocks her head, confident. “A girl can never be too careful, nowadays.”
He hums, attention wandering back to that accursed blade of his, just where she doesn’t want it.
“So.” She leans, trying to mirror his casual affectations, as if she has no care in the world for the conversation that unfolds, as if she is not directing it as subtly as man might a river. “You are of the opinion I should marry him?”
The stone stutters over his blade, just a moment, before the stead drone of the grind begins again. “Pardon?”
“The prodigal prince of Clarines,” she clarifies, though she knows by the steady blankness of his face that it is unnecessary. “I should marry him, you think.”
His lips curl at a corner. “I was not aware that my opinion held weight, my lady.”
“It does.”
Her hands furrow in her nightgown, the tight weave of flannel scratching her palms. Silly, stupid girl. That might as well have been a confession itself.
His hands still in their task, his slender fingers delicate and pale in the firelight. He’s never touched her with them, not more than a gentle guide on her back or a press at her elbow, though she’s thought about it. Thought about it more than is seemly for a girl in her position, especially when they are left to their own devices like this each night. Her father would never allow a lord so close to her age to sit with her like this, but Lowen--
Lowen is too far beneath her to consider. Father may find his advise in the war room indispensable, but he is no peer, no knight, just a man that takes money for his services. It is unthinkable for him to cross that divide.
Save that she does. That she wants him to. That even now she wonders what it might be like for him to stand and close this space between them, to kneel at her feet and hold her hands in his, and--
“I think--” his fingers pluck the oiled rag from beside him.-- “you have little choice in the matter, my lady.”
Haki’s mouth bows with displeasure, fingers clenching into fists. He might rise to the bait, just once. He plays at apathy, but she has watched him too closely to miss how he stiffens at the very barest of the prince.
“You’re right,” she decides loftily. “If there is no recourse, I might as well be pragmatic about my betrothed. Resign myself to my fate, so to speak.”
Lowen does not raise his gaze, but his every move becomes wary, hesitant, as if he is searching for a trap. “I suppose.”
Her mouth thins. Not exactly the reaction she had been hoping for, but-- an Arleon is nothing if not resourceful.
“He is rumored to be quite pretty,” she muses, setting her chin on her hand. “I could like that about him.”
“I believe most say he is handsome,” Lowen corrects tightly. “Not pretty.”
Ah, now there is something she could work with. “It is said he has no beard, like a child.”
“They are not so fashionable in the south as they are here,” he explains. “Hardly any man wears one. Not even the council.”
“Not even the council?” Haki gapes. "But they’re my father’s age! Older, even!”
He shrugs, never once looking up from his occupation, but his mouth curls at the corner.
“Ah, but you were a mercenary in the capital, weren’t you, Lowen?” she inquires, all innocence.
He hesitates. It is only for a moment, a blink of an eye, but Haki feels it, as heavy as the silence between them. “For a time.”
“Did you ever see the first prince?” She can play this game, the noble lady in love with the idea of her betrothed, especially if it makes Lowen wince as he does now.
“I was not stationed inside Wistal Castle.” His tone reminds her more of a clerk quibbling over precedents of law than a soldier relaying the particulars of a post. “Mercenaries are not employed by the crown.”
“But they are employed by the lords.” He scowls down at his blade, and ah, she has got him now. “And personal guards are allowed within the palace. So--” she leans on her hands, batting her eyelashes-- “is he handsome? Is he pretty?”
“I couldn’t say,” he deadpans, eyes still fixed to his blade. “I saw only glimpses, and he seemed fine enough to me.”
“Boo!” she jeers, smile parting her lips. “Surely you can say more than that. Unless, of course, he is quite deformed, and you mean only to save my--”
“He would give you no cause for complaint,” Lowen hastens to say. “And even if he was not, it would be the least important thing about him.”
“Spoken like a man,” she laughs. “If I am to have no choice in the matter, I might as well like the look of him, if nothing else.”
“Or you might like his character,” he says sourly. “Or perhaps the way he treats you.”
“I suppose that I could be told of his kindness, or that you were personally impressed by his generosity to his people. But no one may tell at a glance how a man is behind closed doors.” If his words are sour, hers are bitter, seasoned well by her years at her father’s side. “But to tell me he is handsome, that-- that at least can be trusted, even if the rest of him is rotten to the core.”
Lowen does not dare lift his gaze, but he slants her a glance from the corner of his eyes, one that speak volumes, but only in a language she has never read and--
And this mood is far too serious for what she wishes to accomplish. At least for tonight.
“Though if His Highness does appear for a dance on my birthday, that will go a long way in vouchsafing his character, would it not?” She offers him a sly smile. “And failing that, Master Lowen, I will take a dance from you.”
Lowen recoils with a hiss. “Ah, stupid.”
Haki nearly takes offense-- it was a bold proposition, certainly, and one unbecoming from a woman of her station with her sort of complex marital arrangement-- but still, stupid is a harsh assessment--
Until he shifts, blood glittering black in the firelight, and she realizes: he has cut himself.
“Oh!” Her hands flutter uselessly in front of her, papers lost to the wind. She has never been one to balk at the sight of a little blood-- silly to, when so much pours from her each moon-- but for it to be his flusters her.
Like any woman of breeding, Haki can produce a handkerchief from thin air, and so she does.
“Here,” she murmurs soothingly, taking his wrist in her hand. “Let me.”
He stares down at her fingers, wide-eyed. “My lady, I couldn’t possibly--”
“Shush.” A fine lady she may be, but she is a younger sister too, a veteran of mending her brother’s scrapes. “Give it to me.”
He hesitates, but only for a moment. She fixes him with her most sternest glare, the one that gets even Makiri into line, and his arm eases, hand falling open over hers.
“Ah, there. You should be more careful,” she scolds, pressing the cloth firmly against his palm. “You could hurt yourself.”
He lets out a dry laugh. “So I am learning.”
“But about the dance.” His hand is held firm between her own, warm beneath her fingers, and if anything, Haki is her father’s daughter, born to press when she has the advantage, to give no quarter. “You will agree to it?”
“I...” His gaze tangles with hers, the sea tangling with the ice before it skitters away. “I do not think your fiancé would approve of another man dancing with his wife.”
Haki lets out a bleating laugh. “If he deigns to show himself, then he may see to it that his are the only hands that touch me that night. But if he does not--” her mouth cants into a secretive smile-- “then I shall be dancing with a dozen men to please my father instead. Why should one of them not be you?”
“My lady,” he breathes, every word steeped in frustration. “I doubt that this will please him.”
“And how is that?” She laughs, pulling back the cloth to see the wound well with crimson. Ah, it needed another moment. Fortuitous, as she does as well. “My father loves you. My brother would be you, if he could. What could bring either of them greater joy?”
“He will not rejoice in my lack of a title,” Lowen insists with his stubbornly pragmatic tone, fist clenching beneath her touch. “Not when you could spend that set with a man that already possesses one.”
She pulls the cloth tight against his skin, biting back a smile when he grunts. “If it bothers him so much, then he can just give you one.”
Lowen stiffens, jaw slack. “I’m...I’m sure he could,” he admits, begrudging, “but I think that would be...counter to the purpose of the dances, to give you to a man he already owns.”
Haki balks-- she is not a woman to be given anywhere, not without her say-so, but as he turns his head in the firelight she catches pink sprayed across those high cheeks. There is no point in arguing when he is so close to routed.
“Come now,” she soothes, smoothing the handkerchief along his palm, before tying it across the long bones of his hand. “Surely you would not deny a young lady her one birthday wish?”
He snorts. “I would.”
“Mm.” She edges closer, her skirt brushing his boots. “But would you deny me?”
He looks at her then, eyes hooded with contemplation. “It’s a waste of a wish. Maybe I cannot dance.”
She grins at that, finger delicately tracing her handiwork. “I will not believe it. I know you can.”
“Do you now?” He raises a skeptical brow. “And just where does this unfounded confidence come from?”
“I’ve seen your swordplay.” It’s a bold claim, but one that is rewarded by his wide-eyed stare. “A man with such fine footwork would never be out of place in a ballroom.”
His expression eases. “And this would be your professional opinion?”
“It is,” she hums, tilting her chin smugly. “Come now, you have been caught out.”
“Ah, yes, you have caught me.” He cocks his head in a way she might dare to call playful. “I am a passable dancer.”
“Then you must agree to favor me with your passable dancing.” Her mouth twitches with mischief as she leans in, so close she can see the delicate sweep of each of his eyelashes. “Unless there is some other reason you are afraid to be near me?”
His breath puffs hotly against her lips, and she cannot help but fidget, cannot help but lick them to mute the sensation but--
But his gaze drops to watch, eyes tracing her path with pupils blown wide.
“A single set.” Her touch travels to his wrist, rubbing over the delicate nub at its waist. “That is all I am asking.
“Your father.” The words are little more than a breath. His body stills beneath her, save for the frantic pulse beneath her fingertips. “He will not approve of it.”
A weak parry. It would take a sterner father than her own to deny a single dance. “Then let us dance out of sight. We will not be missed.”
“My lady--”
What he means to say is lost; her fingers smooth along the vein, and what words he has elide into something softer than a moan.
“Lowen.” She teases the edge of his cuff, a nail slipping just beneath. “Do you not trust yourself alone with a lady?”
“A lady? Yes.” His breath rattles out of his chest. “With you...?”
His fingers spasm beneath her wrist, just the barest touch before they pull away.
“The atmosphere is different a ball,” he says, stilted, as if he had meant to say something else.
A laugh slips from her chest, tinkling breathlessly in the air between them. “It’s louder for one.”
“Hah.” It leaves him in a burst, harsh. “Not quite what I meant, my lady.”
“Cloying, for another,” she continues, trembling with her success. If only she could keep him this close, if only she could make him laugh like that again. “And hot--”
“What I mean,” he drawls, casting her a playful glare, “is more in--” his breath catches-- “timate.”
Just the word is enough to make her shiver. “I see,” she manages, knees brushing against his own. “I have never...” Her gaze rises to meet his, but never gets beyond the perfect bow of his lips. “I have never found so.”
“Ah.” He’s so close the heat of his sigh sears. “Neither have I.”
“Then it’s--” his fingers brush the flannel of her nightgown, and ah, it is so hard to think when his breath caresses her lips as tenderly as he might himself, if only she could dare these last inches-- “it’s settled then. A ball is no more dangerous a place than this b--” her voice fails her, dropping to a whisper-- “bedroom.”
“Perhaps,” he hums, a sounds she can hear through her bones. “But I have heard with the right partner, any dance may seem--” his touch drags down her arm absently, brushing tantalizingly over her own palm-- “much more.”
“But could that not be said for anything?” she teases, tilting her head just so. “Even a--” her breath catches, and oh, the words leave her mouth before she can gather them back-- “a conversation?”
His hand spasms around her, and again his eyes are on her lips. “Could it?”
Haki hesitates. A flirtation is a fine thing for a lady, a healthy thing some might argue, but-- there are things not to be said, lines not be crossed--
But oh, how can she care for such things when he is so close, when he might want her just as she wants him. “Yes.”
She leans in, eyelids dropped to half-mast, lips parting as his breath fans hotly over them, and--
And she is left cold.
“I should leave you,” he says, words too loud for this room, this hour, this conversation. It is good he has put as much space as he can between them.
That is, without dropping her hand. “Should you?”
“Yes.” It’s a decisive tone he uses, even if the way he looks at her describes all the ways he would like to say. “You should be in...”
Bed, he means to say. A dangerous word to have between them now.
“Perhaps.” Her thumb rubs along the long bones of his hand, and oh, she has never seen a man so poised to flee with eyes that burn to stay. “Are you to watch over me?”
“I...do not think it prudent, my lady.” His lips curl wryly as he stares at their joined hands. “Not at this hour.”
“You have stayed before,” she protests. “I will set the chair for you, and--”
His hand comes to her shoulder as she attempts to rise, guiding her back into her seat. “No. It would not be wise to--” he shakes his head, and with clear eyes, meets her gaze, “the hour is not too late, my lady, but too dangerous.”
Her fingers squeeze his gently. “I’m never in danger from you, sir.”
“Ah, maybe so. But I am in danger from you.” He lifts her hand, as he has so many times before, though never here, not in her private rooms, and the kiss he lays upon it--
She struggles for breath. It has never quite felt like that before either. “Sir--”
“Goodnight, my lady.” His mouth rucks ruefully as he backs away. “Let us converse in the morning. At a safer hour.”

xii. Beauty and Her Beast
<<Previous || masterpost || AO3 || Next>>
Shirayuki has never found her royal duties so oppressive.
She should be attending to the Yuris-trained bird handler, an experienced scout who volunteered for the unit after the success of its initial ventures. He escorts her with the deference due her rank, explaining their progress and latest innovations with enthusiasm tempered by respectful courtesy.
This task, overseeing the link between Wistal and the Yuris people, was intended as Shirayuki’s baby step into the authority and obligations of a second princess.
Much like Zen had supervised Fort Laxdo in preparation for commanding the northern territories, so Lord Haruka and Prince Izana had agreed that granting Shirayuki a role with the bird handlers would groom her for greater responsibilities.
The reasoning was characteristically crystalline, a delicate balance of cautious and laudatory:
Shirayuki had the makings of diplomatic qualifications in her pre-existing friendship with the chief’s daughter. There was potential there for greater cordiality, increased understanding, shared resources, etc, etc.
On the other hand, Yuris Island represented a long-term investment, not a crisis point for diplomatic or defensive calculations.
If she fell short, the consequences would be minimal.
...
The bird handlers had played a small but impressive part in the war: linking communications with the advance forces so effectively that the main body of the army had arrived in time for a perfectly coordinated attack.
This ultimate confrontation had decided victory for Clarines. Shirayuki’s escort waxed eloquent on the future possibilities should another danger arise.
She should be weighing his proposals against the concerns that the Yuris delegation had expressed in their latest communication, that the birds were not only defenseless in combat situations, but likely to draw fire due to their brilliant plumage.
It would require delicacy and tact to balance the military advantages against the care and safekeeping of their valuable bird population, to say nothing of what the dangers meant personally to Kihal and the island people.
She should be thinking of all these things, planning a course of action, considering her position on the question.
Instead, she was thinking of Obi.
...
Since that day in the courtyard, he had not failed to appear whenever she ventured outside. He accompanied her like a shadow, never speaking, never approaching.
He was there now, drifting behind them at a comfortable distance, head inclined politely in the direction of the scout, looking as attentive as she was distracted.
He stayed close, but never close enough to touch.
...
Obi was doing his best.
He knew what she needed from him, knew what he wanted from her, bent and twisted himself to make up the difference.
He was balancing again, performing impossible feats like a circus performer--but this time, without Zen to act as an anchor, he is the wire.
...
Shirayuki doesn’t understand.
Obi has never held her at a distance before, never drawn back when she approached, never met her with cool professionalism when she needed warmth and understanding.
She keeps waiting for him to come closer, or forgets that he is far--turning to speak an aside to him, only to find him as remote as if an ocean divided them.
Her boat is drifting from shore, and he watches her go from an ever-increasing distance.
...
If closing the space between them would take two heartbeats, instead of a breath, maybe that will be enough time for him to think twice.
He welds invisible manacles, builds insubstantial walls between them, knowing all along that it is useless.
She can break any chain, vault any wall. It’s only a matter of time.
...
It must be her fault, she thinks. She has hurt him.
She never explained herself, that day, and now he thinks she is ashamed of him. That's why he is holding back from her.
She should say something.
...
These thoughts revolve around and around, while they circle the birds’ roosts, and the clouds spin overhead, and time whirls by, and none of them find any rest.
The castle needs its princess, Obi deserves to know the truth, and her heart cries out for someone who cannot answer.
Shirayuki felt the tension of these demands like an intense heat or an overpowering weight, bearing down with nothing to shield her from it.
She is wilting under the pressure.
...
The scout says something to her as the tour concludes, seeking some sign of approval or appreciation perhaps, but Shirayuki can’t formulate a reply.
Her thoughts crash into each other, like waves on a wind-tossed sea. Trying to form a sentence is like executing a dance figure - her tongue won’t cooperate any more than her feet ever do.
She is a disappointment, Shirayuki feels with a sinking heart, and the sensation is becoming familiar.
...
When their guide bows them from the aviary, they are alone again.
Shirayuki waits for Obi to approach, to speak, but he makes no move. He is giving her space.
As the silence turns oppressive, the awful choice forces itself on her: If she speaks, and he leaves?
If she says nothing, and he continues as he is now - present in form but absent from her in soul?
Either way she would be forced to admit what every fiber of her being cried out against: That things were different now, and they would never return to what they had been before.
...
The self-deception required for resistance to the plain facts of the matter might seem incredible, but it was so. Perhaps it may be allowed on the understanding that Shirayuki had never said so much to herself in words.
It was a silent cry of her heart that clamored for a reprieve from the awful reality of her changed world, an inarticulate plea that she not be made it give it all up and start again.
Obi’s continued presence at her side had been her sole victory in achieving that wish.
If she and Obi carried on as they had before, then they could carry something of the past with them--a memory, at least, of a happiness they had once shared in a circle of five...a happiness that had been on the verge of fruition until unfeeling fate had intervened.
Nothing else remained to her of the life that she had longed and labored for in Clarines--nothing but Obi’s nearness and steady affection, the comfort of his unwavering companionship.
Now even that was unraveling before her eyes.
...
She felt herself cornered, as powerless to stop the destruction of all her hopes as if she were tasked with building a defensive rampart with bricks of sand.
That her hopes had in truth already collapsed long ago did not lessen the present pain of facing that loss anew.
Shirayuki was no coward, but even she shrank from throwing herself on the horns of a dilemma before it seemed perfectly necessary to do so.
More than once she had found herself in a position to prefer the postponement of a decision whose outlook promised only pain. This was particularly true whenever it happened that her heart was at odds with her head--or turned inwards against itself.
Confronting just such a circumstance now, with Obi waiting as patient as a stone at a distance of five feet, she availed herself of the only escape remaining.
She ran away.

Aphrodite’s Kiss, Meditrina’s Gentle Whispers - Chevalier Michel
----- Aphrodite’s Kiss, Meditrina’s Gentle Whispers || Chevalier Michel x F! Reader (MC)
Tumblr media
Summary : The night you and Chevalier shared the sweetness of Aphrodite's kiss, he told you that he has a certain tolerance for medications, especially poisons. But you never know that he went through a very painful and long poison test to reach that point of tolerance. Until one afternoon, Meditrina gave you a hint and told you everything.
WC : 2022 Words. (WHAT A PRETTY NUMBERS)
Warning : Grammar errors, Snow White with Red Hair reference, Spoiler for Aphrodite’s Kiss Story Event, etc.
A/N : I got the idea to write this after reading Aphrodite's Kiss Event and immediately thought of a scene in Akagami no Shirayukihime. After re-watching certain episodes of the anime, I immediately thought, "why not? let's make a fiction of Chevalier with this reference!" Hope you enjoy it!
“[Y/N], could you please you get this certain file in the secret data information room? Make sure no one is following you." That's what Sariel ordered you. You don't want to mess with that smiling devil, so you quickly do what he wants.
This is the path you have decided to continue on. A path where you can continue to be by his side. The 2nd Prince of Rhodolite, Prince Chevalier Michel. There will be times when you're tired, but you've made up your mind. He is the biggest motivation for you to keep going and you will not back down. Anything as long as you can be with him.
Your fingers traced the bookshelf inside the national secret information room in the Rhodolite Royal Palace, trying to find a certain file that Sariel asked for. “Herbs Transaction Data from Benitoite Port : King [P/K/N]’s Reign,” you whispered, still looking for the file you just mentioned.
“Oh, found it!” you jumped in excitement when you find the file you're looking for. You quickly pulled the file off the shelf.
“Goodness!” You were surprised and jumped back when you accidentally pulled the other books around the file you took.
You stared at the books and papers strewn on the floor for a while, feeling a little lazy to put them back to its original palce. You sighed and crouched down, starting to pick up the fallen books one by one.
However, "hm?" You tilted your head when the title of a book catches your eye. Rhodolite Royal Family's Medical History : Prince Chevalier Michel's Records. "Prince Chevalier's medical history?"
Curious, you immediately lifted the book and observed the cover. But after observing the book for long enough, your mind started to fight, trying to decide whether or not to take it.
If the book is in the secret information room, then it is a national secret that cannot be leaked. You can be considered a thief if you just take it without asking permission. But on the other hand, Sariel will continue to tease you about that curiosity and that's what makes you hesitate.
In the end you decided to take the book without permission. You think it won't hurt you if you borrow it for a while and return it when you're done. You took the file that Sariel asked for along with Chevalier's medical history.
“Where should I read this book? A safe place where I'm alone and no one can enter,” you muttered as you walked down the halls of the palace, clutching the records book to your chest. Until an answer popped into your mind. You decided to read the records in Chevalier's private library where not just anyone can enter. The place is also very quiet so you can read it in peace.
You sat yourself in the chair where Chevalier used to sit to read his novels. You sighed, a little nervous about what was going to be written on the book. “I don't believe Prince Chevalier was ever hurt. He always came back from the battlefield unscathed. Was he one of those clumsy kids when he was little?” you murmered, wondering to yourself.
You opened the book. Sure enough, your guess was right. Most of the medical records written in the book were wounds and injuries he got from training and fighting when he was young. You smiled at the thought of the young Chevalier getting injured in his first sword practice.
“Oh…” You were a little surprised after turning the next few pages and seeing the section title printed on the page. “'10 Years Old Prince Chevalier Michel... Poison Testing Report?'” you read the title slowly before gasping in surprise. “Prince Chevalier’s body was once used as a vessel for testing a poison?!” you asked, who couldn't believe what was written on the paper.
Somehow, your heart was beating really fast. Your hands were shaking, unable to turn the page. But on the other hand, your heart kept screaming as if forcing you to immediately turn to the next page.
Winter, January 18th. The royal physician put the poison in the drink of the 2nd Prince of Rhodolite, Prince Chevalier Michel. This poison is strong. Poison testing began.
Winter, January 19th. 12 hours after the poison administration, the prince broke out in a high fever. There were mild disturbances in his breathing, but no abnormalities in his speech or conduct. He was stable for the next 48 hours.
Spring, 2nd April. 3 months after the administration, Prince Chevalier Michel had difficulty walking. His body was unable to accept more chemicals and drugs. The royal physician gave a mild antidote along with a painkiller that didn't completely remove the poison. This will continue to be tested for the next 3 months.
Summer, 22nd July. After 3 months, as expected, thirty minutes after taking the antidote for the poison and carrying out various other medical treatments, Prince Chevalier Michel broke out in another high fever—
“With stabbing pains all over his body,” your voice trembled as you read the sentence. “All the poison was gone from his body. This is the final and closing symptom of the poison testing on the body of the 2nd Prince of Rhodolite, Prince Chevalier Michel.”
You need more energy to read those two sentences. Not only your voice, your hands and heart are trembling violently.
You suddenly thought of that one night you spent with Chevalier. The night where Aphrodite's kiss from you was able to make brutal beast like him seem like a helpless prey before you.
“I have a certain amount of tolerance to medications. I’ve been acclimating my body to poisons since I was a child, unfortunately for you.”
One, two, and three sobs escaped your lips. Tears flow freely from your beautiful eyes and wet the paper, leaving a stain. You can't imagine how much pain Chevalier felt at that time. And all that he did for the sake of becoming a perfect prince—future king. So that his enemies can’t easily drop him.
Not wanting to get too caught up in what had happened in the past, you wiped your face with the cloth of your arm. Although, you're already unable to read the next page regarding the cases of attempted murder using poison on Chevalier.
Without you realizing it, you were a little careless and forgot to close tight the door to your lover's private library. You are too curious about the contents of the book and then sink into a sadness and pain.
Nokto, who happened to be bored and played one of the female notaries in the library, passed the private library. He stopped when he heard a soft sob coming from inside.
Because of your previous carelessness, Nokto peeked through the slightly ajar door of the private library. “Oh, the rabbit is crying?” he asked, curious and wondering what really happened to you. "King Highness would be pleased by this," he said as he walked out of the library.
∘◦ ✂ ————– ✂ ◦∘
The sound of swords clashing echoed in every corner of the training hall. Chevalier yet again finds himself ending up dueling Clavis after a thousand times rejecting him.
"I've never seen you train, Chev, but your skills never dull," the third prince commented.
"You're the one who's still not strong enough to take me down," Chevalier replied coldly.
Clavis could only laughed. “Damn you!”
     “Good afternoon, King Highness.”
Chevalier and Clavis immediately backed away and stopped when they heard the voice of the seventh prince. The two of them looked up to find Nokto who was already leaning on one of the pillars of the training hall.
“What a bright smile you have there,” Clavis teased. "I can tell you're very-very happy."
Nokto laughed out loud. "Oh, of course. I thought that I had to do something. I wanted to comfort him myself, but I knew my head would fall off my neck if I did," Nokto explained.
     "Comfort her?" Chevalier looks confused.
“I am a kind of person who can't bear to see a ripe fruit cry. But because I can't just taste it even for a little bit, so I decided to come here," the foxy prince continued .
“Just say it!” Chevalier was getting impatient.
"It's about [Y/N]. I don't know why, but the mistress of yours is crying all alone in your private library. I doubt that she cried because of a romance novel she read.”
For the first time in a long time, Clavis and Nokto could see Chavalier's cold and sharp eyes waver. As if triggered by something dangerous, Chevalier's chest immediately felt tight when he knew you were crying akk alone. Without further ado, Chevalier ended his duel with Clavis and rushed towards the place Nokto had just mentioned.
Meanwhile, Nokto and Clavis couldn't help but laugh out loud, amused by the once-in-a-lifetime sight they had just seen.
∘◦ ✂ ————– ✂ ◦∘
You didn’t feel disturbed when you hear the sound of the library door opening. Whoever it is, you know it's Chevalier. No one can just open the door except you and the room's original owner. You just stared silently at the document you've just read.
Chevalier leaned against the door frame, staring at your figure in his chair. "Reading a national’s secret information document without permission is a grave treason," Chevalier said calmly.
"You know what this is?" Despite his threatening words, you asked something else in a very pressing but still gentle tone.
"Well, it's my medical records. Of course I know what's in your hand." After finding out what made you cry, Chavlier breathed a sigh of relief.
“You said you have a certain tolerance for medications, especially poisons. But you never said that you went through all these terrible, long, and painful tests and administrations to reach that point of tolerance,” you protested again without even looking at the prince. Your eyes were still locked on the book. He could hear the anxiety in your voice.
"My age and body were still in the most ideal and stable state at that time," Chevalier explained shortly.
Silence enveloped the library. Chevalier knows that excuse won’t be enough to assuage your annoyance. Chevalier rose from where he was standing. He dropped on one knee and crouched down in front of you. His gloved hands gripped yours tightly, trying to comfort you. "You're not going to look this way?"
You couldn’t refuse. You immediately raised your gaze to Chevalier harshly. Chevalier could see your annoyed expression and your teary eyes, making your eyes look like a pair of beautiful gems.
Chevalier suddenly smirked, knowing how innocent you were. "Simpleton," he muttered. Chevalier immediately pulled you from the chair, switching positions with you. After sitting himself in the chair, Chevalier put you on his lap, embracing you warmly. You immediately melted in his arms, as if all your anxiety was flowing somewhere.
You gripped the front of Chevalier's clothes tight. You were too scared to lose him. But luckily, Chevalier cradled your shoulder that were stiff from fear. He lets you smell the masculine scent of the rose and sea salt mixture on his body, letting you know he's right there with you.
"You don't have to cry. I'm here with you. Isn't that enough to prove you that I'm fine?” Chevalier whispered to youe ear.
What Chevalier said is true. The poison testing took place about two decades ago. And now Chevalier is with you and hugging you, without the horrible and painful symptoms you read about in those medical records. Chevalier is fine with you.
You nodded, answering Chevalier's previous question.
The sweetness of Aphrodite's kiss that night opens you to an answer of a question you thought would never be answered. But this afternoon, Meditrina whispered in a kind and gentle voice, telling you that Chevalier was able to survive the poison because of fate.
Fate that will later lead him to you. Fate that will later unite you with him. Just like in times like this. When he is hugging you tightly and warmly, reassuring you that he is with you and won't go anywhere.

I love the series because:
1. The portrayal of romantic relationship is healthy.
2. The FL is strong and interdependent, but also vulnerable and relatable.
3. The ML is just the personification of healthy masculinity.
4. The plot is heartwarmingly believable.
Point #1: I've been reading manga for (god I'm old) nearly 2 decades now and when it comes to shoujo, I can never stress enough how put off I am with toxic relationships being glorified and romanticized. When I was in my early teens, I admit the tension and the aggressive (even abusive at times) behavior kinda provided some 'spice' in the story. But now that I'm older and have gained my fair share of all sorts of relationships (family, friends, professional, romantic, etc), I'm just really disheartened with all the toxic drama being glorified. I mean there's so much other areas in life that can give a story 'spice', not just glorified abuse. Another thing is the portrayal of a character being incomplete unless they finally find 'the one'. Granted, this is romance shoujo genre and so the story is expected to contain romance. But the portrayal of any person only being completed once they fall in love, and the idea that nothing else matters except romance just doesn't sit well with me. Thankfully, this series has none of that. Akagami no Shirayukihime portrays an interdependent, consensual, and overall healthy romantic relationship founded on deep friendship, genuine love, and mutual respect.
Point #2: Shirayuki is not your typical damsel in distress, nor is she the overly strong type who stomps on/brushes off all the other characters just because she can. Yes, she was initially a target for trouble because of her unusual hair but the author doesn't rub that to the readers as the only thing that drives the plot. In fact, I've just recently come to a personal conclusion that the red hair actually portrays the destiny that the FL carves out for herself. When she first met Zen (ML), she thought her red hair brought him nothing but trouble. But Zen told her she can think that way, or she can see it as something that actually connects her to a new path. Shirayuki is also strong: mentally, emotionally, and even physically (not Obi level, but she's resilient enough to withstand the challenges that come her way). She's interdependent that she is able to make her own decisions but she also recognizes the importance of the people around her and considers how they factor into her choices. Case in point, when Zen told her she can just do what she wants (referring to a task she was entrusted with) and no need to consider his position, she simply replies, "Got it. I will think about you and do what I want." (Sighsss mah heart). She's strong and interdependent, but she's also vulnerable. She gets scared, she feels a certain degree of insecurity, she recognizes her social standing and how this relates to the royal prince. She's earnest and honest. She gets mad when she needs to, but doesn't linger in her rage. She calls out people but never in a condescending way. And she has come through every obstacle that life has thrown at her. Finally, she's very relatable (to me, at least). She's not the kind of main character whose entire personality is anchored on her love interest. Her world does not revolve around romance. Her conflicts are not all romance-related. She has a career. She has personal goals. She has friends and colleagues. She is an entire character, period. And isn't that what we all are? We are not just defined by our romantic relationships, (god that would be awfully one-dimensional). In her journey, she is complete by herself but she has also decided to expand her heart and nurture a romantic relationship with the person she loves. And she is able to align her professional goals with the future that she envisions with her romantic partner.
Point #3: Zen is the personification of healthy masculinity. He is strong but not oppressive nor possessive. He is stoic but isn't afraid to show emotion as well. He is properly functioning as the country's second prince with tons of responsibilities, and he has come to terms with what it means to be part of the royal family. He has never used his position to his advantage. In fact, it's quite the opposite. He is aware of his position that's why he's careful about dealing with situations and people. He can be stubborn, but he is also quick to admit his wrongs. He is not perfect, but he has come a long way. Just like Shirayuki, he is an entire character on his own.
And here is where I respectfully disagree with you. I had to double-check the meaning of 'vanilla'. According to Collins dictionary, it means you are ordinary, with no special or extra features. According to urban dictionary, it means someone with little inclination to do anything spontaneous or exciting, either sexually, or in general every day life. According to TV tropes, it means a protagonist whose characteristics and background are plainer or simpler compared to the rest of the cast. Again, I respectfully disagree. Zen has never struck me as someone who has nothing special and doesn't have anything going for him. Just because Zen is not your usual shoujo ML with multiple personality disorder (aka cold and abusive one moment, sweet and endearing the next, etc), or he isn't outrageous with all the over-the-top gestures, or he isn't horny 24/7, or he isn't completely out of this world, or he isn't someone hung up on some past trauma, doesn't mean he's boring.
But more than that, Zen is definitely the kind of ML I would choose, both in real life and if I were ever isekai-ed into the manga/anime world (haha). He is self-aware. He's very respectful. He knows his boundaries. He has his own desires, but he never forces anything on the FL, or on any other character for that matter. He desires to be with Shirayuki, but he doesn't take shortcuts. He clearly states what he wants and how he feels. Most of all, he doesn't see expression as a weakness and never hesitates to communicate. I don't know how far you've gone in your reading, but I would like to point out their conversation in Chapter 55. This was really the moment when Zen's overall character as a romantic partner was cemented for me. Shirayuki just dropped the bomb and told him she was moving away for 2 years due to work. At first he was shocked, but after properly hearing her words, and knowing her personal desires, he gladly saw her off and even saying, "This is the reason why you're so precious to me" referring to how she is so steadfast in her choices but still always including him in her future. Now imagine that in real life: I have this once in a lifetime opportunity to further my career but it's going to be some place far and it's for at least 2 years. I'm going to be separated for a time from my loved ones, but I also still want to pursue it for my own goals. I know there are those who wouldn't want to be separated from their loved ones, and there's nothing wrong with that. But for me personally, it would be so heartwarming if my partner pulled off a Zen. Instead of moping or sulking or worse, holding me back, he would see me off, he would properly tell me he would miss me, but also express how he is so proud of me and how he would support my choices. Now I don't know about yall but this is just... chef's kiss.
Point #4: The plot. The build-up to the romance is believable. The healthy give-and-take relationship is just bliss. They first become genuine friends and they slowly come to the realization that they love each other and want to be by each other's side. But then she's a foreigner with no social standing, and he's a royal prince. I've read and adored a lot of kingdom type manga and trust me, this author could have gone the usual route of putting them together after some conflict because they're the main characters, and it's a period romance, and they live happily ever after because that's just how it usually goes. And there's nothing wrong with that either. But no, the author doesn't. Sorata-sensei properly fleshes out each character and builds up all the events that would lead to turning points in the story. Right now sensei is still in the midst of weaving this wonderful tapestry of a romance, allowing the characters to really grow and the events to properly unfold and us readers to join the journey, and it's just overall beautiful.
As pointed out in another comment here, this is definitely the kind of manga I would pickup on a rainy day and just get lost in the reading. Actually, this is the kind of manga I would pickup any day, period :)

Bro I just came across this comment about AnS on reddit and couldn’t help myself but share it because of how good and accurate it is. It reminded me why this is my favourite manga ever and will probably remain that way for the rest of my lifetime. There is nothing more I could possibly add to this but please read AnS if you haven’t. A story like this that portrays good and healthy relationships deserves to be read by everyone. Merry Christmas everyone❤️🥰✨

Kind of both, honestly? Sometimes daydreaming sparks a story idea, and sometimes I already have one, and jump right in. I've been accidentally daydreaming every now and again about the next two friendship bracelet fics to write for you and haven't written a word. I got busy the day I wrote the Yun and Yona one, but I had starting dialogue for the Shin-Ah and Zeno one, I currently can't remember. So, hopefully, that will all come back to me. :) 5. Right now, it depends on the device. I have no works in progress on paper or on my mp3 player at the moment. (Just complete stuff on paper that I haven't typed up and edited yet.) On this computer, I have four works in progress apparently. XD One for Hetalia, Hetero!AmeLiet (Nyo!America and regular!Lithuania, a really long, complicated AU fic), one for My Roommate Is A Cat (Tora X Kuro (two street cats, to clarify) XD, one My Roommate Is A Cat/Akagami No Shirayukihime crossover fic (ZenYuki + best friend Obi), and I can't remember right now if there are any My Roommate Is A Cat pairings in it), and a ZenYuki domestic fluff, Modern AU (with kids) oneshot. If you're talking multichapter fics or other ongoing fics like oneshot collections, I'm not counting out for any of the fandoms I got into years ago. For ANS, I have a RajiHal AU multichapter fic, an ObiYuki AU multichapter fic, a ObiYuki (then eventual ZenYuki) AU multichapter fic, a RajiYuki AU multichapter fic, a possibly ZenYuki multichapter fic, that is likely not going to be super romance focused (it's a Peaceweaver AU, so technically romance without the attraction/desire, I guess??? Since the characters don't want to be married, but are or are to be married technically) that contains mentioned twosided!RajiYuki, and who knows how Zen and Shirayuki will feel about each other. For Yona of the Dawn, a oneshot collection that is told from the perspectives of Kaya, Hiryuu, and the other three Original Dragon Warriors focused on when each of them discover Zeno's powers, presumably after death for these characters. (Don't know how I'll do Hiryuu's perspective, but I'll get there.) (I'm going to try to do these in sets of two, if it will let me. Sorry in advance!)

For the Fanfiction Writing Asks:
2, 10, 12, 21, 30, 36, 72, and 77
Thanks for the ask!!!
2. Where do you get your fic ideas?
Most of the time it's just like, I watch something and think 'you know what would be cool' and take from there. Sometimes I get ideas from a conversation or a random thought or something I read.
10. Do you work on multiple wips or stick to one fic at a time?
I like sticking to one fic but I'm gonna try working on multiple wips and see how that turns out 😊
12. Do you outline your fics?  If yes, how detailed are your outlines?  How far do you stray from them?
Not really, usually if I'm writing a wip I have a general idea of where I want it to go and just work out the details as I'm writing it tho I'll add notes on how I want the chapter to go sometimes.
21. Do you prefer writing chaptered fics or one-shots?
I think chaptered, most of my wips I'm planning on writing have multiple chapters 😁
30. How much do you edit your fics?  Do you edit as you write or wait until you finish the first draft?
I like to edit as I write and then go over it a few times after I finished the chapter. I find that I tend to find better ways to make the story flow and things I need to fix if I read it from the beginning.
36. What fic are you proudest of?
My current akagami no Shirayukihime one!! (I need to find a shorter way of saying that 😂) It's the fic that helped me improve the most with the help of all my friends 😘
72. What’s your favorite writing compliment you’ve gotten?
I think it's you saying I've improved in my writing and hanako-san asking where she could read the first chapter of my fic, that made me really happy tho I just realized I never told her that
77. Why do you enjoy writing fanfiction?
I like that I get to share the stories that are in my head! I've been daydreaming about some of them for a long time and finally getting to write them and share them with everyone has been really fun!

2021 Creator Self-Love Extravaganza!
Rules: It’s time to love yourselves! Choose your 5 favorite works (fics, art, edits, etc.) you’ve created this year and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you’ve brought into the world in 2021. If you don’t have five published works, that’s fine! Include ideas/drafts/whatever you like that you’ve worked on/thought about, and talk a little about them instead! Remember, this is all about self-love and positive enthusiasm, so fuck the rules if you need to. Have fun, and tag as many fellow creators as you like so they can share the love! <3
This year I experimented with gifmaking for the first time, so on top of a word count, I have a media!
Years total: 91014 words, 10 fics, and literally hundreds of gifs
1. "At some point in your childhood, you and your friends went outside to play together for the last time, and nobody knew it" - Hakuouki, ensemble, rating: G - It's not every day that I get to bring my own brand of emotional terrorism to a new fandom, but when I do, I make sure to attack the entire fandom as a whole. Bonus points for using a brand-new-to-me medium to do it! :D [gifset]
2. Initiate - Gokushufudou, Tatsu/Friendship, rating: G - My first foray into writing for a fandom outside of AnS! And of course what would inspire me was a brief excursion into the AO3 tag only to discover the tragedy of a mere 9 fics for that wonderful series 😢 There's more now, but this was me pushing the tag into the double digits and I had a lot of fun writing early Tatsu adjusting to his new role as a homemaker (and the friends he made along the way)! [4818 words]
3. A Place at the Table - Akagami no Shirayukihime, Happy Family, rating: G - This is a fic that I drafted back in 2016 when I first joined the fandom and quickly became overwhelmed since I hadn't the practice nor the skill at the time to execute what I wanted. Five years later, I tried again and not only got to write food feels, but also a snap shot of the early Happy Family formation between Ryuu, Shirayuki and Obi! [12231 words]
4. the abyss gazes unto thee - Hakuouki, No Pairing, rating: M for body horror and raising the dead - I raged - RAGED - at Yamazaki's death scene during Sannan's route and clearly there was nothing to be done but right a terrible, terrible wrong. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to write Sannan's voice, too. He is precisely the degree of morally gray that I'm down for apparently. [2198 words]
5. Seraglio, Chapter 3 - Akagami no Shirayukihime, Obiyuki, rating: M - Everything about this AU is like pulling teeth to write because Shirayuki has undergone such a fundamental change to her canon story. Whenever I sit down to type out a new chapter for it, it undergoes multiple fully rewritten drafts and also has to be discussed in depth with @sabraeal on each draft because this is a joint venture and we need to be on the same page when the other half is writing a new chapter. For as much as I complain about, though, I really love the final product. There's something about these two upping their messiness to previously unknown levels that just appeals, ya know? [7702 words]
I'm going to add a new component to this, too, people can choose to skip this part if they want. Future plans! In 2022, I plan on wrapping up Seven Nights (Yamachi) and I Should've Met You Yesterday (Obiyuki); if I am successful there, then I want to get to work posting the tumblr-only follow up. I also want to write a "short" PWP for Spy x Family (Loid/Yor). But my BIG project, I think, is going to be centered on My Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead To Doom! (Maria/Catarina). Of course this is an ambitious line up, but I am excited about each of these pieces and I'm really hoping to share what's in my head with you all! :D
Alright! I'm tagging... @sabraeal, @claudeng80, @onedivinemisfit, @ruleofexception, @infinitelystrangemachinex and anybody else who wants to join in on the fun!

Out Into the Sunlight
AU: Neighbors Square: A3 Pardon me as I join in on some Obiyuki. This is my first fic for this fandom, so hello! This is a side-blog for @onepetal, just for fic, because reasons.
When Shirayuki is five years old, they get new neighbors. It's a family like hers: just two people. Except also exactly the opposite, because it's a boy and his mom instead of the other way around.
"We'll go over to say hello," her father tells her, wiping a smudge of dirt from her cheek. "Do you want to bring anything with you?"
Shirayuki wants to bring lots of things. She wants to bring cookies, so her father gets out the salt and the sugar and helps her stir in the vanilla. They raise a cloud of flour together and get a few eggshells into the batter, but all in all, they come out okay, and nothing burned. Before heading over, Shirayuki darts into the yard and uses a pair of plastic scissors to clip the stems of twelve whole tulips, each a different happy color.
Shirayuki steps over every crack on the sidewalk on the way next door. She wants this boy to like her, and every bit of good luck she can gather seems important.
When Shirayuki's father knocks, the woman she'd seen earlier, walking from the car to the driveway, opens the door. She doesn't open it all the way, just enough to see who's standing on her doorstep. Shirayuki tries to peer around her legs, but there's nothing to see. "What do you want?"
"We're here to welcome you into the neighborhood," says Shirayuki's father. "My daughter and I baked cookies for you." He holds up the plate.
"We have flowers, too!" Shirayuki adds, lifting them so the lady can see.
"I'm Mukaze," her father supplies, "and this is Shirayuki."
The woman regards them for a moment. She looks a little like Shirayuki's dad on his bad days, the days he stays in his room and stares out the window. Her shirt is rumpled and stained, like she hasn't had time to do the laundry, and her hair needs to be washed. There's a tightness to her lips that makes Shirayuki feel small. Maybe she doesn't like flowers.
"Thank you," she finally says. "Come in, then." She opens the door just enough and turns away, toward the stairs. "Obi! Get down here."
The inside of their house doesn't have much, Shirayuki notices. She can see the living room, where there's a single, old couch and a low table, and that's it. There's nothing on the walls. The only lights are the ones set into the ceiling, and half of them are off. She wonders if maybe all of their things are still on the way, in boxes on trucks. Maybe Obi is missing his toys.
The boy appears just as the woman is taking the plate of cookies and the tulips. Shirayuki hopes maybe her expression will soften if she tastes them, because she hasn't smiled at all.
"I'm Anika," she says. She nods to her son, who has slunk down the stairs and is hovering at the bottom, like he's not sure if he wants to run back up. "That's Obi. He's eight, about to be in third grade." The way she talks about him is not like the way Shirayuki's father talks about her, which feels like laughter and warm hugs. Instead, it's like there's snow inside her voice.
Shirayuki had seen Obi earlier, too, but just a glance at him. He had been running like the wind, out from the car and around the back of the house so quickly all she had time to see was a flash of black hair. Now she has a better look. He's wearing a t-shirt with a Pokémon on it--she doesn't know which one, but it isn't Pikachu--and he has pretty gold colored eyes that keep slipping between her and his mother. Both his socks are on, but one has a hole in the toe.
Shirayuki feels her father's hand at her back. "Why don't you take Obi outside to play," he suggests, voice turned toward her.
"Okay!" she chirps, and walks right up to Obi. He's much taller than her. A very good eight-year-old height. "Hi," she says, sticking her hand out to shake. She always feels adult when she shakes hands, and meeting someone is a good time to act like an adult, especially because she's younger so she has to prove she's okay to play with. "I'm Shirayuki, I live next door! The house with the roses in the front, and the white gate, and the birdbath."
Obi stares down at her hand, and oh--maybe he doesn't want to be friends with a girl littler than him, after all--but she keeps smiling anyway. Behind them, she hears her father walk with Obi's mom into the kitchen, talking, Anika's voice still flat and her father's large and friendly.
Obi blinks slowly, and then the corner of a smile creeps onto his face. Shirayuki warms instantly. She had been worried no one in this family knew how to look happy.
His hand slips into hers, and they fold together. "Hello," he says. It sounds shy, but he's staring right at her.
"Do you like flowers?" Shirayuki asks.
He nods. "I like to be outside."
"Me too," Shirayuki says, very seriously. She tugs his hand, still folded over hers. "Let's go!"
She can't wait to show him everything, she thinks, and pulls him out into the sunlight.

Cattleya and Her Dandelion (a Violet Evergarden series)
This story focuses on the backstory of Cattleya Baudelaire. This is slightly based from the light novels, where Cattleya ran away from her parents, ultimately becoming a dancer, before eventually meeting Hodgins. But there’s another addition to this very vague backstory — one that I believe is not only plausible, but also has a beautiful message behind it.
This trilogy is about Cattleya’s past, but she’s not the only one. Her younger brother, Lionel, is also involved. When Cattleya has a breakdown after watching a play that reminds her so much of her brother, she tells the Gang her story and how she came to be a Doll. She tells them where she’s originally from — Bociaccia (my personal headcanon) — and of her family. She tells them that her name isn’t really Cattleya, but her real name is Cornelia DeGaul, but changed it when she ran away. She told them of her family and how they treated her, and how she did not know love until her little brother came along. She took care of him and became like a mother to him. When he could use words, he misspoke her name and called her “Cattleya”, and thus her name. And she called him “her Dandelion” due to his coloring and his personality and how he made her happy.
Eventually, when her parents plan on sending her to a special school to prepare her for marriage, she plans on running away, and does so, planning on returning once she’s older so that she can rescue her brother, knowing that currently she can’t do anything. She travels around until she eventually becomes a dancer and eventually meets Hodgins during the Great War. Once the Great War is nearing its end, they go to her hometown to find her home destroyed and her parents dead with the possibility of Lionel being dead, too. And she grieves that she had gotten here too late and regrets not have taken him with her.
Then many years later, Iris gets a client who’s in Bociaccia and gets excited to go some place outside of Leiden. She then discovers something that will change her whole world.
Also, as far as pairings go, Iris will get together with someone, along with Cattleya/Hodgins, Benedict/Erica, Luculia/Unnamed Fiance, and either Violet/Gilbert or Leon/Violet.
Iris College AU (a Violet Evergarden AU story)
Modern AU. In her childhood, Iris met a boy called Leon who visited family during summer vacation and became great friends. But unfortunately he had to return home and through circumstances never saw him again. With him still in the recesses of her mind, Iris goes to college. And it’s a new and fascinating experience for her. She does judo and has a part-time job in a maid cafe.
In her third year, a young man by the name of Lionel Baudelaire enters her college as a freshman. And, for some reason, seems to have taken a shine to her, and embarrassingly calls her “Senpai”. Iris runs into him wherever she goes: her Judo classes, at the cafe where she works, at the cafe she dines at with some friends, even the library. Why does this man have such a fascination with her? Is he a stalker? Or will this end up blooming into an unlikely friendship?
Pairings: Iris/OC, Cattleya/Hodgins, Benedict/Erica, Luculia/Unnamed Fiance and either Gilbert/Violet or Leon/Violet.
Wormwood’s Shadow (a Violet Evergarden story)
This story will be OC-focused and will be about a Leidenschaftlich officer who is forced by his superiors to lead his battalion with other units through a forest on faulty intel and get ambushed by Gardarik forces. The officer (who I’ll name Wormwood for now) is one of the only few who survive the tragic onslaught, his unit all-but annihilated. But he was badly scarred and lost an eye. As he recovers from his injuries, he grieves, and resolves to go to the families of his unit and support them as best as he can. To any whom are still alive, he offers them a job so that they can provide for their families. He also builds a memorial for his lost battalion. He eventually meets the wife-turned-widow of his superior, who sent him on that ill-fated mission and they eventually get married.
A few years after the Great War ended, General Munter sends for him and informs him of his plan to resurrect the Sturmtruppen special units and offers him a commission and a command of one of the two regiments being formed. After thinking about it, and consulting with his wife, he agrees and works together with a revealed and definitely-not-dead Gilbert Bougainvillea, now a colonel like him. However, their superior is yet another stupid and glory-hungry idiot that they have to contend with.
When war breaks out again a year later — a small one breaking out between Salbert Holy State vs Gnizen Union and Bociaccia — Wormwood’s and Gilbert’s forces, among others, are sent to quell the conflict. Will he be able to change the past and prevent history from repeating itself?
There’s more, but that’s the jist of it. Pretty much an angst/drama fic.
Conflict in Leiden (a Violet Evergarden story)
This story will be on the escalating and gradually accumulating conflict in the Leidenschaftlich government as a Pro-Monarchy faction rises up to advocate the reinstallation of the Royal Family, who centuries ago were forced to become an aristocratic family as the aristocrats insisted on being in charge of the nation due to their power. But due to several calamities, cries for the reinstitution of the monarchy have been voiced, resulting in a potential civil war. And I plan on Gilbert making a comeback.
Another Great War (a Violet Evergarden story)
It is 30 years after the First Great War during Violet’s generation. Now Gilbert and Violet’s children have to experience another Great War that looms on their doorstep. What must they do to overcome it? Can they survive this second international conflict?
I’m not really sure whether to have Gardarik be the aggressor again, or Salbert Holy State, or Ctrigall, one of the Southern nations, or even an entity outside of the continent. Hmm...
Tumblr media
(Seriously, I’d LOVE to know if other nations inhabit those land masses north and south of Telesis or not.)
The Third Great War (A Violet Evergarden Story)
It is 25 years later and Violet experiences yet a THIRD Great War — and this time, Leidenschaftlich is the aggressor due to several key events. And she has to watch her children and grandchildren go through the trial of fire yet again, and reminisces on her own memories — especially now that her beloved Gilbert is on his sickbed, gravely ill.
The Lost Letters (A Violet Evergarden Fiction/Nonfiction Hybrid Story)
This will be a “nonfiction” work based on the special episode 14 where Mr. Roland shows Violet the abandoned warehouse full of letters and packages that will never reach their destination. I felt super sad about that, so I thought of the idea to write a work where the letters will have a chance to reach people (you). People from various walks of life and in various occupations will write. Let me know what you’d like to see!
The Ctrigallian Chronicles (a Violet Evergarden Fiction/Nonfiction Hybrid Story)
A nonfiction/fiction/biography that goes into the POVs of various Ctrigallian soldiers fighting during the sudden and violet civil war and also dealing with the Gardarik insurgents. Every one-shot will tell their story. Based on episodes 11-13, particularly episode 11. Might even have it where Aidan Field stays alive. (Because I kinda want that to happen.)
Into Telesis (A Violet Evergarden Nonfiction)
This nonfiction will essentially get into detail about the various nations of Telesis, getting into their history, culture, politics, customs, etc. Since much of this world has been left blank, it’ll be up to me to detail it as best as I can while keeping it loyal to the VE world.
The Phantom Son (An Akagami no Shirayuki-hime Story)
Part of the “Chronicles of Clarines” series.
(OMC-centric)
[Himawari (OMC) & Everyone, Zen / Shirayuki, Mitsuhide / Kiki, Himawari (OMC) & Zen, Izana / Haki, eventual Himawari (OMC) / Kiharu | Kihal, and others]
Cursed with an unknown condition that forces him to avoid the sun, Himawari, eldest son of a baron in one of Clarines’ easternmost fiefs, has had to live his whole life semi-alone and forced to live with shame for not being normal and cursed with being unable to live a normal life. When his father decides to disown him and gives his birthright to his younger brother, and kicks him out of their family estate in disgrace, Himawari, with his Companions who decide to follow him, and his hawk, rides out into unknown horizons, eager to meet other people, make new experiences, and hoping to find a cure for his ailment.
When trouble strikes, Fate leads him to Zen and Shirayuki, and the others. Grateful for their assistance, and already having a great admiration for Prince Zen, pledges himself in eternal service as Zen’s vassal. An opportunity comes to test that loyalty when the “Yuris Island” debacle came to Wistal Castle. It’s also when he meets Kiharu Toghrul, Yuris Island local representative, for the first time — though they never have any direct contact at first. Once the debacle’s over, surprisingly, Prince Zen names Sir Himawari as Lord of both Yuris Island and the rest of Lord Brecker’s lands, and gives him the title of Baron, tasking him with the important duty of protecting Yuris Island’s becoming-endangered Blue Parrots as a new asset to the Crown.
Will Himawari be able to be accepted for who he is despite his condition? Will he be able to fulfill the duty that his master has given him and exceed his expectations? Will Lord Brecker or the other nobles give him trouble? But more importantly, will Himawari ever find a cure for his “sun sickness”? Or is he cursed to live out this fate for the rest of his life?
The Blue-Haired Omen (An Akagami no Shirayuki-hime Story)
Part of the “Chronicles of Clarines” series. And part of the “Tales From Other Nations” series.
(OMC-centric)
[Roruko (OMC) & Everyone, Zen / Shirayuki, Mitsuhide / Kiki, Himawari (OMC) / Kiharu | Kihal, Izana / Haki, eventual Roruko / OFC, and others]
This story — set one year after the events of Book 1 — focuses on a young prince in a foreign nation who’s a neighbor to Clarines. Called Roruko, he’s the sixth son of seven sons and one girl — for a total of eight children. His elder brothers, though, are only half-bloods, since he and his younger siblings were birthed by their father’s second wife and queen. And with the exception of the eldest, the others don’t like them at all. What’s worse is that due to his birth being heralded by natural disasters, his blue hair — which would’ve usually been held as a sign of good fortune  — is considered a bad omen and is thus shunned and scorned by everyone. Only his Companion, parents, eldest brother, and his younger siblings love him and aren’t swayed by this prejudice.
Then his elder brother summons him and gives him his first fief to rule over: a backwoods district that would be a good starting point for Roruko to hopefully make a name for himself as a prince and a ruler. The problem? The condition it’s in is nowhere near what the reports say, and even worse is that the populace look at him in askance, and crime rate is moderate, with reports of people getting abducted, missing, or killed. And Roruko has no choice but to roll up his sleeves, roll with the criticisms and prejudice, and do what he came here to do.
However, just as his subjects start thawing to him, an epidemic rolls in, forcing Roruko to ride to Clarines and beg for their help in dealing with it. And if it weren’t enough, news just comes to him from the capital: his country is now at war with another nation invading their borders!
In this coming-of-age story, can Roruko survive? Can he overcome and sway the prejudice towards him through his actions and drive? Or will he fail and lose both reputation, home, and family?
Other fics in the “Chronicles of Clarines” series:
Book 3 “The Unwanted War” || (CC-and-OC-centric) || [Zen / Shirayuki, Izana / Haki, Mitsuhide / Kiki (or Hisame / Kiki temp), Himawari (OMC) / Kihura | Kihal, and others] || Set two years after the events of Book 2, a prince of a foreign nation is struggling in a war against an enemy that they’ve been fighting for 30-odd years. And they’re losing. Not only that, but his father was assassinated, leaving him to take the reins and inherit their war. With their land being invaded and much of it taken by the enemy, the new ruler of the principality has to find a way to win the war and end it permanently. When the enemy nation’s relations with Clarines starts deteriorating — to the point that war starts being declared — the prince rescues Clarines from that and offers an alliance with them against their now-mutual adversary. What will happen to Clarines and their new ally? Will they win the war, or will the enemy be victorious? How did Clarines even end up in this war to begin with? Can their new ally even be trusted?
Book 4 “The Conspiracy” || (CC-centric) || [Zen / Shirayuki, Izana / Haki, Mitsuhide / Kiki, Himawari (OMC) / Kihura | Kihal, and others] || Set after the events after Book 3, it’s not long after the war, and Zen and Shirayuki are finally ready to tie the knot. However, dissent begins to rise from the North as there are some who still disapprove of the union (and just want the excuse to rebel), and also wanting to avenge Touka Bergatt. And Zen and Izana are their targets. Can they be able to withstand another Northern rebellion and conspiracy? Or will the North finally be victorious and be able to either establish a new dynasty or secede from Clarines and form their own entity?
Book 5 “The Missing Princess” || (CC-and-OC-centric) || [Eventual OMC / OFC pairing, as well as Zen / Shirayuki and other pairings] || A story set 15 years after the events of Book 4, a princess was travelling to another realm via ship when a fierce storm blew and caused it to sink. When she wakes up, she doesn’t remember anything except her name and later finds out that she’s in Clarines. Thinking that she may be a woman of high rank, she’s sent to the palace of Wilant — Prince Zen’s residence — where Shirayuki can take care of her. Can this unknown woman remember her identity? And what is this news about a missing foreign princess? Could the two be connected, or just a coincidence? And why does Prince Zen and Shirayuki’s son seem to take such an interest in her?
There MIGHT be more books after this, but we’ll see. These last 3 books are more story ideas than anything else. I literally haven’t done anything past that. They’re not fleshed out or outlined at all compared to the first two books of this series.
Other future stories in the “Tales From Other Nations” series:
Book 3 “The Diarchal Succession” || (OC-centric) || [Several OMC / OFC pairings, as well as mentions or possible showings of Zen / Shirayuki and other pairings] || A story of twins who will end up thrown in a conspiracy when their father makes the decision to have them both be his successors and later rule the Kingdom as one, rather than having the eldest twin rule as is the usual custom of succession. Naturally, the court opposes this, even though the king has already made it a decree and can’t be revoked, saying that it would only cause friction and dissention if there is more than one ruler. Can the twins be able to prove their father correct, or will they be forced to compete for the throne? Or will they simply perish in this game of thrones?
Book 4 “The Exile” || (OC-centric) || [Several OMC / OFC pairings, as well as mentions or possible showings of Zen / Shirayuki and other pairings] || A story of a royal family who has ruled their nation in complete peace and safety, until a radical political body attempts to seize power of the country for itself, and thus starts a coup to overthrow the current monarchs. Caught totally off-guard, the royal family is forced into hiding and take refuge in another country. Will they be able to return and defeat their enemies and reclaim the stability of the nation? Or will they be found and slain?
Book 5 “The Dictator” || (OC-centric) || [Several OMC / OFC pairings, as well as mentions or possible showings of Zen / Shirayuki and other pairings] || A story of a nation in need of a leader during a dark period — and a man who’s ambition for power and a legacy as a ruler of his country knows no bounds. In his fight for the top, he uses his silver tongue, charisma, luck, and sheer cunning to keep up with his rivals. A chronic opportunist able to turn any situation, no matter how dire or disadvantageous, into an advantage, he is a shrewd politician. This is his story.
Book 6 “The Hidden Royal” || (OC-centric) || [Several OMC / OFC pairings, as well as mentions or possible showings of Zen / Shirayuki and other pairings] || A story of a young prince/princess who has secretly been sent to another nation for an education. When a family member starts a cue and slaughters most of the royal family to take power for himself, the usurper is unaware of the existence of the royal, thinking him/her to have been killed or died. But when the royal hears of the tragic news of his family’s deaths, they’re conflicted on whether they ought to return home, or remain in the kingdom that has been like a second home and family to them. What decision will they make? And what happens if he ends up found?
There MIGHT be more books after this, but we’ll see. These last 4 books are more story ideas than anything else. I literally haven’t done anything past that. They’re not fleshed out or outlined at all compared to the first two books of this series.
Raj’s Story (An Akagami no Shirayuki-hime Story)
Part of the “Tales of Tanbarun” series.
This story follows Prince Raj after the events of Season 2 as he begins to metamorphosis into the Crown Prince that Tanbarun needs, and that Shirayuki can be proud of. As he grows, as he learns, as he’s conflicted over his feelings for Shirayuki (and his family’s schemes to get them together), he goes on a figurative journey as his life takes on a new course of self-discovery. His fame for his daring confrontation and elimination of the pirate threat on the seas has skyrocketed and Tanbarun is the focus on new recognition by other countries. One of whom is an island nation south of Tanbarun who’s heard of his exploits and have sent envoys to not only praise him for his heroic deed but also request a formal alliance and a trade agreement, and also offers their princess’s hand in marriage to him. How will Prince Raj react to this proposal? Will he fulfill his Quest that he gave himself? Will he become the Prince that his people can be proud of?
More stories in the “Tales of Tanbarun” series:
Book 2 “Blind Ambition” || (OC-centric) || [Several OMC / OFC pairings, as well as Raj / OFC and mentions of Zen / Shirayuki] || This is a story independent from the rest of the series, but is still part of the world. (I’m not sure where to set this story at yet, but probably before or after Book 4. Maybe.) A blind princess who has a tendency for trouble and impish pranks is eager to show everyone that she won’t let them think that she can’t do something just because she’s a woman, and often drags her hapless and harassed Companion around while she does it.
ZenYuki Mulan AU (An Akagami no Shirayuki-hime Story)
In order to escape the pursuit of Prince Raj of Tanbarun, she disguises herself as a man, and becomes the Royal Guard’s healer, where she meets Prince Zen as he trains his unit in preparation for war as his brother leaves with the army. Will she be discovered? Will she fall in love? Will Prince Raj find her?
(Might also do a ZenKiki version of this as well.)
MitsuKiki Mulan AU (An Akagami no Shirayuki-hime Story)
A story where Kiki runs away to be a Knight, and runs into Mitsuhide, who trains their unit in preparation for war.
RajiYuki Beauty and the Beast AU (An Akagami no Shirayuki-hime Story)
A story where Prince Raj becomes a Beast due to his lifestyle, causing himself and the entire castle to be put under a curse, and he feels like he has no hope of ever lifting it. Until one day, a girl named Shirayuki comes to the castle. Can she be the prophesied one who can lift the curse? Can she heal Raj’s insecure and immature heart and transform him into the Crown Prince that Tanbarun needs?
Narnia AU (An Akagami no Shirayuki-hime/Narnia Story)
A story where Zen, Shirayuki, Mitsuhide and Kiki (or Raj and Kihal, or Raj and Kiki), with the addition of Obi, end up in Narnia and become its Kings and Queens there.
WWII AU (An Akagami no Shirayuki-hime Story)
A story — or even a series of stories — where Zen, Shirayuki, and the cast of ANS are in various scenarios in WWII. Anywhere from pilots, tankers, infantry, paratroopers, or even navy personnel.
Sengoku Period AU (An Akagami no Shirayuki-hime Story)
A story where the ANS world is in Feudal Japan during the Sengoku Jidai Period. I’m still unsure as to the roles yet. Not sure if the Wistalia family should be an Imperial, a Shogunate, or a Daimyo family.
RajiYuki Book of Esther AU (An Akagami no Shirayuki-hime Story)
A story inspired from the Book of Esther in the Bible, where Shirayuki becomes an eventual Princess of Prince Raj, but the Chief of the Court — the King’s Chief Administrator — seeks the destruction of her people, the Lions of the Mountain, viewing them as a threat to his power and wants them eliminated. Can Shirayuki rescue her family and clan from their fate?
Clarines and Other Kingdoms (An Akagami no Shirayuki-hime Nonfiction)
A nonfiction detailing the customs, cultures, summaries, geographies, and other info concerning every country, including Clarines and Tanbarun. Will mostly include OC kingdoms and nations that you may or may not see in my stories.
The Histories of Clarines and Tanbarun (An Akagami no Shirayuki-hime Nonfiction)
A nonfiction detailing the histories of Clarines and Tanbarun, respectively. Will also include the history of the ANS story thus far.
A Noble Alliance: The History of the Friendship Between Clarines and Tanbarun (An Akagami no Shirayuki-hime Nonfiction)
A nonfiction focusing and detailing the history of the relationship and friendship between Clarines and Tanbarun.
The Prince and the Healer: Behind the Story of Prince Zen and Lady Shirayuki’s Fateful Meeting (An Akagami no Shirayuki-hime Nonfiction)
A nonfiction detailing the famous story of Prince Zen and Lady Shirayuki, of their history together, and their eventual union.
The Drakers (a Drifting Dragons Nonfiction)
Essentially a “history” of the Drakers and the art of Draking. I don’t plan on this being a long story. Probably no more than a long one-shot or three chapters and certainly no more than 5. Unless, of course, this work speaks to me and lets me know that it needs to be bigger.
The Life of A Draker (a Drifting Dragons One-Shot Collection)
This is going to be a whump one-shot collection of characters of every kind experiencing various kinds of whump. I won’t get too graphic or dark or anything, but I thought it’d be neat. Let me know what platonic pairings you’d like to see and who to whump.
What Your Searching For (A Drifting Dragons story)
I haven’t really flushed this idea much except I plan on an OC who signs up aboard the Quin Zaza to search for his long-lost brother. He’s a surgeon and an ex-Royal Marine and is well-connected. (I’m rather annoyed that these guys don’t have a qualified surgeon aboard. I mean, what if any of them got seriously injured?!) He becomes great friends with Yoshi and Takita, Capella and Mannie have a thing for him, and Vannie is curious about him. And an annoyed Mika watches on. lol XD
Again, I don’t really have much fleshed out on this. This was more of a recent idea.
The Princess & the Draker (A Drifting Dragons story)
Kinda inspired by “Princess and the Pauper”. Kinda. I’ve only just come up with thia idea, so I don’t know the gist of it. Basically, Vannie’s a princess and meets Mika who’s a Draker.
Or I could have Mika be the Captain of the Guard or whatever. Have it be an AU. Or something.
Yeah, probably.
<><><><><><>
Anyway, besides these, I’ll also be doing fanfics for other animes such as
Drifting Dragons
Cells At Work
Demon Slayer
Teasing Master Takagi-san
Garden of Words
Your Name
...and a few others.

Fic Writer Review!
stole this from @bouncyirwin and encouraged by @iamnotakitty and @eruditeempress because I am weak haha
1. How many do you have on Ao3? 26
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 939,497 words
3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they? 6 fandoms (Naruto, Harry Potter, LoTR, Hobbit, My Hero Academia, Akagami no Shirayukihime)
4. What are your top 5 five by kudos?
* Yeah, Kunai are cool but have you had dessert? - 4,209
* He’s the Evil Twin, okay? - 2,731
* In The Eye of The Beholder - 2,206
* No Tomorrow - 2,031
* Until Dawn Breaks - 707
5. Do you respond to comments, why or why not?  Generally yes but sometimes, especially if I’ve gone really off the fic in question (as in, cannot bear to think about it) or writing in general, I just moderate the comment straight through without responding. But, when I’m back into writing again, I’ll go back and reread comments or reply very late haha
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? My fics are usually about canon divergence that SPARES death/angst but I do post what-ifs in one-shots. The saddest is a chapter in my ficlet collection ‘Tomorrowland’ where I write Inoichi’s POV of Shisui’s b*dy washing up from the Naka River.
7. Do you write crossovers? yes, I generally like to throw a character into a diffferent universe or adopting the settign from one as an AU than merging the two worlds together. I have a HP world Shisui one-shot and then an on-going Shisui is in LoTR story, The Red Ally.
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic? oh god yeah, it was so horrible at one point that I’ve had to get on my soap-box in my A/Ns before
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind? Hmm, I do but usually as a comisseration gift to my Beta for putting up with my insane workload. Any pairing combo!
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Yep! had it several times where people say they want to link their fic as inspired by mine and, when I go to check them out, they’d copy+pasted sections. it was sorted in the end but not fun :/
11. Have you ever had a fic translated? Uhhh I had people ask, back on FFNet, and a russian version of one was done but I’m not really sure if its still out there or not??
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Nope! I'd love to tho
13. What is your all time favorite ship? Hmm, I dont really write ship-fics for some reason BUT i love reading Kakasaku, shikasaku, TobiKagami... oh wait i’m also weak for literally most rarepairs. I drove myself mad trying to find Saku/Hashi the other day haha
14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? Uh I’m not sure I should say with all the readers following me 👁️👄👁️
15. What are your writing strengths? I would say descriptions but I’ve been told I’m strong with fighting scenes. Apparently I set the pace right
16. What are your writing weaknesses? I’m very very stop-starty. No Tomorrow was the first ever fic I wrote (and, really, have written ever) where I was largely able to post on the regular. I speed-write 10K in a day or I edit 500 words for six months. there is very little in-between. I also have a terrible habit of ranting about WIPs and then never doing them, which is something I’m actively trying to work on since I feel bad for the people who WANT to read the ideas I rant to them about
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? I would if I could but I cant so i shant!
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for? uhhhhhhhhhhhhh I think it was a very very cheesy first-person confession ficlet for Akagami no Shirayukihime... I remember reading it out to my Mum and, in hindsight, her expression was very pained lmao
19. What’s your favorite fic you’ve ever written? i’m most inamoured with whatever i’m currently writing, i gained the most satisfaction from my recent Godaime!Tsunade fic ‘SUKEBAN’ but i am most proud of ‘No Tomorrow’ because I actually finished it to a degree i’m satisfied with
hmmm @looks-like-starlight and @skewedrevisions off the top of my very empty head ❤️❤️❤️

Mosaic of Friendship
An Akagami no Shirayukihime Playlist (for @ans-arcade Platonic Week 2021)
Tumblr media
At first I had some trouble finding songs for these prompts… but then I dug through a few of my older playlists and eventually found a song to fit each theme! I’m calling this playlist a “mosaic” since I did have to borrow from a lot of older playlists and the playlist is in order of prompts, not vibes. Some new songs include an unlikely duo of Obi and Kiki fighting together, Obi and Zen competing as their corresponding seasons do, and everyone visiting Shirayuki, Ryu, and Obi in the snow of Lilias. (Image from the “Phoskia” art book, one of my prized possessions and a gift from my friend @vampiregirldraws!)
My Friend- Hayley Williams Competition- Matt Pond PA All is As All Should Be- The Dear Hunter The World You Love- Jimmy Eat World Stay Focused- Rising Fawn Woah (Remix)- Matt Pond PA I May Fall (Acoustic)- Jeff and Casey Lee Williams (RWBY Soundtrack)
Summary lyrics are posted below the cut, and I’m planning on posting individual lyric analyses separately for each corresponding day:
“Little wrinkle by your eye, I never noticed 'til right now, little vicious tiger stripes. My friend, when the blood has dried… you've seen me from every side, still down for the ride. Not a secret I can't keep… if it's wrong or if it's right, I am beside you, famine or fire. We stay safe together, escape death forever.”- My Friend, Hayley Williams
“I won't be able to come to the table, without the greenness that I believe in. Somewhere but I don't know, thoughts of competition will take hold. Back and forth between air that's thin, is the idea that you might win.”- Competition, Matt Pond PA
“What were we before? Were we always what we are or were we made to change? Is all that remains the will to start again or is there more retained when another life begins? But at the end when you're looking out through my eyes, you'll see that all is as all should be.”- All Is As All Should Be, The Dear Hunter
“I’ve got a story it's almost finished, now all I need is someone to tell it to, maybe that's you. I fall asleep with my friends around me, only place I know, I feel safe, I'm gonna call this home. I'm in love with the ordinary, I need a simple space to rest my head and everything gets clear. Don’t it feel like sunshine after all, the world we loved forever gone.”- The World You Love, Jimmy Eat World
“You're going to get through this, whether you know it or not, I am going to pull you through this, just believe me and smile. Hold me tightly… I'll keep you safe, as you breathe through the tears, love. I know you can do this, I know you can.”- Stay Focused, Rising Fawn
“The shiver's going straight down to my bones, the shakes are stretching all the way to my soul. Through the layers, hear your heartbeat, sprawled out in the cold, ever soaring, rolling hills… Now there's nothing but this length of frosted string, on this gray ridge carved by glaciers from into the void, frozen moment lasts forever.”- Woah, Matt Pond PA
“There's a moment that changes a life when we do something that no one else can and the path that we've taken will lead us, one final stand. There's a moment we make a decision, not to cower and crash to the ground, the moment we face our worst demons, our courage found. When we stand with friends, and we won't retreat.”- I May Fall, Jeff and Casey Lee Williams

Happy New Year!!!
Please stay safe and enjoy celebrating the New Year. It’s a fresh start for some of us so let’s make the most of it! 🎆
I was supposed to go on a little break for Christmas until New Years Day, but that didn’t happen since I can’t write fast enough LOL.
Now that I’ve officially finished my event request I’m going on a little vacation from writing (just give me a week) I promise I’ll be back! Ik Hiatus can sound scary to some of you bc a lot of writers end up not coming back, but I just need a little break to re-organize myself and plan a few things for this blog that I want to do.
I WILL BE BACK WITH A NEW POST (probably for obey me bc I haven’t written for them in forever) on JANUARY 8TH! You have my word 💜💞.
My urgent requests are still open and I will still be writing those while on break if you really need one! and ofc my regular requests are always open as well but those requests take me a little longer to get to since I have a lot pending rn
Some plans I’m working on:
Adding Tokyo Revengers (Mikey, Chifuyu, Baji, Mitsuya, and maybe Draken), Demon Slayer (Rengoku, Giyuu, and Tengen), Obi from Akagami no Shirayukihime, Sesshomaru from Inuyasha, Tears of Themis (Marius, Vyn, Artem, and Luke)— to my fandoms that I write for
Also thinking of adding a few new characters to my Haikyuu list (Suna and the Miya brothers), MHA list (Tamaki and Hawks) and Obey me list (Solomon, Simeon, Diavolo, and Barbaros). Maybe more idk.
I want to do matchups at some point this month (I think it would be fun)
I also wanted to open up requests for proofreading. I know grammar and plotting a story can be hard (I’m not perfect at it either, trust me) but it’s my dream to be an editor at a publishing company so I wanted to be open for accepting proofreading requests. You would send me a Google docs with your fic along with whatever you need help with (just proofreading for grammar, plot help, writers block) whatever! And I’d help out :D. I need to plan it better tho. But if you’d be interested in this, let me know!
I want to improve my own writing by not rushing. I really want to take my time and work on each request I have pending right now
I’d like to write special birthday requests for the characters that I write for so I need to write down their birthdays and brain storm ideas ahead of time! Maybe even special holiday posts too!
And maybe more to come. Idk I can’t think rn LOL
BUT YEAH. I also have my own goals for my personal life as well like continue to learn Korean, learning Japanese (both languages would help in my field 😭), eating better, reading more books/fanfics/manga, exercising, all that good stuff. I also really hope to be able to fine a job this year. I CAN’T go any longer being jobless. It’s embarrassing 😭
Anyway I just wanted to give you guys a little update and let you know about my mini break.
SEE YOU ON JANUARY 8th 💞 (unless I get any urgent requests)
