ALEXIS ARQUETTE

28 July 1969 – 11 September 2016

            Alexis was an American entertainer and activist. Alexis got involved in the entertainment industry at the age of 12 by first appearing in music videos. She has appeared in Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1986), Pulp Fiction (1994), and is best known for playing the Boy George looking singer in the film The Wedding Singer (1998) singing ‘Do you really want to hurt me’ repeatedly.

            Alexis was born male in Los Angeles, California, US. He is from a Jewish background, as well as French-Canadian ancestry. Alexis is from a well-known Arquette family; his siblings are David Arquette, Rosanne Arquette and Patricia Arquette.

            In 2014, Alexis claimed she had sexual intercourse with actor Jared Leto and spoke openly about his private part, “I had sex with Jared Leto back when I was presenting as a male. And, yes, it's not only massive; it's like a Praetorian Guard's helmet”.

            Alexis identified as female, worked as a female impersonator and started the process for sex reassignment surgery. Alexis was an advocate for transgenders.

            In 1987, Alexis contracted HIV and suffered numerous health issues as a result. She was placed in an induced coma and died in 2016, aged 47 from myocarditis from HIV.

Jack Be Nimble

The first several minutes of Garth Maxwell’s New Zealand film JACK BE NIMBLE (1993, Shudder, AMC+) are almost entirely visual as a woman attempting to hang clothes in a relentless wind starts to break down, She goes into the room where her children are playing and stares out the window as the sheer drapes blow into her face. As the action progresses, Maxwell doesn’t need words to communicate that the children, Dora and Jack, are placed in an orphanage where she’s adopted by a caring, middle-class family and he goes to an abusive couple running a farm with four older adopted daughters as vicious as they are. The adult Dora (Sarah Smuts-Kennedy) develops psychic powers; she’s tormented by the voices of the dead. But she can’t sense Jack (Alexis Arquette) until he uses a hypnosis machine (bear with me; I know this is weird) to drive his adoptive parents to suicide before running off in search of his sister. When they meet, they go searching for their birth parents. Family connection and its lack, the effect of one’s environment and revenge are the key themes of the film, which is so dreamlike it’s almost a fairy tale. There’s a passage in the late middle in which the imagery gets more staid as Maxwell sets up the plot mechanics for his finale. But he gets back on track at the end, which manages to be both moving and upsetting. Arquette and Smuts-Kennedy are very good, as is Bruno Lawrence, in his next to last film, as a psychic who helps Smut-Kennedy deal with her gift.
