Hi! I saw your old reply regarding Alicia's baby. I'm rewatching season 3 and to me it seems pretty obvious that only Julio can be the father based on the timeline. It's emphasized many times during the season that she was "not doing her marital duty" for months. She even confesses to J when she does sleep with D, and there're indications of the pregnancy during even the middle of the season (running out to vomit). But J&A are shown meeting up in the secret room in the middle of the nights...

Oh, yeah, even if there's no way to 100% confirm it, I really do tend to think Julio is the father, too...I remember when I first saw that episode and the floppy-haired little boy for the first time, I was like, "Aw, baby Julio." It was just after that that I thought that Diego was still technically a possibility, but your points here are good ones.

The Gran Chaco is South America’s second-largest forest after the Amazon; its 100m hectares (247m acres) stretch across Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil and Bolivia. It is also one of the richest areas of biodiversity in the world – host to more than 3,400 species of plants, 500 birds, 150 mammals, 120 reptiles and 100 amphibians.

But as agricultural and logging industries have encroached on the territory, it has also become one of the most deforested places on Earth.

About 7m hectares of native forests were lost in Argentina between 1998 and 2023, according to official data, about 80% of which was in the Gran Chaco. New figures from Greenpeace show that nearly 150,000 hectares (370,000 acres) were destroyed in the forest in 2024 – a 10% increase from the previous year.

Natay Collet, a park ranger and technician, has witnessed the destruction first hand. “First they chop down the trees of value to sell, then they come for the rest with machines and chains. Afterwards, they set fire to the land, killing everything. All that is left is a desert,” she says.

Collet says deforestation has happened since “the first colonists came” but that for the past 15 years “companies have come with everything they have”. “There is no hour of rest, it happens all hours, every day,” she says, adding that better technology and chainsaws have accelerated the process.

Juan Diego Ayala, an environmental researcher and member of the collective Somos Monte, explains how much deforestation goes under the radar. “It’s called pinprick land grabs: instead of deforesting thousands of hectares at a time, they will take under 500 hectares at a time,” he says. “It is difficult to detect until it’s too late. It looks like nothing is happening, but everything is happening.”

The Gran Chaco is home to a wide range of wildlife, including maned wolves, ocelots, tapirs, armadillos, capybaras and howler monkeys. With their habitat shrinking, many species are now at risk, biologists warn.

The jaguar is one of the most vulnerable species, with conservationists estimating its range in Argentina has shrunk by more than 95% in the past 150 years. Officials believe there are only about 200 jaguars left in Argentina, and fewer than 20 in the Gran Chaco.

“The loss of habitat is the biggest problem of all. The animals lose their shelter, their prey, they are forced to migrate,” says Alicia Delgado, a biologist at Rewilding Argentina. “When the land is no longer connected – when it is split by roads and farms – animals have to move through populated areas. People get scared and hunt them.”

Collet explains that howler monkeys, which rarely leave the canopies, need tree connectivity to find resources and survive. She also worries about the giant armadillo, which is thought to breed only every three years. “A major change in the ecosystem can have a huge impact,” she says.

Deforestation worsens the climate crisis, as carbon stored by trees is released back into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. Nuhem says it has had a more immediate impact on the climate, too. “Now we have intense heat, the wind is stronger, the rainfall is scarce and the land is dry,” she says. Droughts have become longer, and floods more extreme, she adds.

The felling of trees continues despite the creation of Argentina’s Forest Law in 2007, which was introduced in response to “the expansion of the agricultural frontier”. The state now requires provincial governments to decide which areas should be protected, set limits on deforestation and devote resources to conservation. But Hernán Giardini, coordinator of Greenpeace’s forest campaign, says, “the law is not enough, and our justice system is not working to defend the forest”.

The deforestation also continues despite a 2019 ruling by the Chaco courts ordering its suspension.

“Deforestation has been prohibited in Chaco since 2019 – the courts banned it, but it is never enforced,” says Enrique Viale, an environmental lawyer and president of the Argentine Association of Environmental Lawyers.

A recently retired police officer tells the Guardian that once, when he was in the process of confiscating trucks filled with illegally cut trees, he received a call from a government official. “He told me to let the men – and the trees and trucks – go,” he says. “Whenever I tried to do the right thing, to stop the deforestation, I was punished, while those that committed the crimes walked free.”

Nuhem says that local people attempting to prevent illegal deforestation have faced threats and violence for more than a decade.

In 2008, one of Nuhem’s colleagues was kidnapped by a group of men.

“They told her to stop reporting the deforestation, and that, if not, she would be killed. They beat her and raped her,” Nuhem says. “She left the group and the village. The case was never solved and a lot of people helping to report the deforestation fell silent.”

Collet says illegal deforestation is treated with impunity because “the government sees Chaco as a resource to be used and exploited”. “The only thing the government sees in the forest is money,” she says.

Some of the main products of the Chaco province are timber, soya beans, beef, cotton and tannins.

Viale says the state and businesses justify deforestation by saying it leads to economic development. “But Chaco is one of the provinces with the most deforestation in Argentina, and also one of the poorest,” he says. “Everyone mentions progress, but the bosses only enrich themselves.”

Viale and his team have filed a criminal complaint about the deforestation, which is with Argentine prosecutors to investigate. “It is the first time in Chaco we have had a case of this magnitude,” Viale says. “We want to break the cycle of impunity.”

But the Indigenous people, who consider the trees to be gods, say time is running out. “Deforestation is wiping out our cultural practices, our traditional knowledge, like our medicine and our language,” says Nuhem. “We are becoming weak, just like the forest.”

Now, onto the good stuff

Growing up, I was a huge fan of Sofia the First and Elena of Avalor. I have watched almost every episode of Sofia the First multiple times and I was COUNTING the days until Elena of Avalor came out. My family didn't have Disney Channel, so I always watched it on second-hand services like Amazon Prime. Partway through season 2 of Elena, new episodes weren't available on Amazon for some reason, so I kind of stopped watching it. Fast forward a couple years and I kind of resumed watching Elena. The rest of season 2 and season 3 were on Amazon by then, but I don't want to purchase them, so I just keep rewatching what I'd already seen.

But I wanted more. So I decided I was gonna write my own episodes to take place after season 2 episode 12 (Class Act). I titled it ELENA and it ended up being quite a few episodes. The first episode was nine pages in theater script and the last was something like 20+ pages in theater script. After that, I started other projects and don't write new episode anymore, but I do still watch Elena all the time, listen to the songs and two years ago, long after I'd finished my ELENA episodes, I was doing a rewatch of Go, Diego, Go and decided to use the Diego theme song for my ELENA episodes.

My ELENA episodes introduced a number of new characters that I created (Pearla) as well as original storylines, ie. the stuff about Aruba. I also located the Kingdom of Avalor in the year 1845 and in what is now Maracaibo, Venezuela 🇻🇪.

I didn't do the whole theme song, but this is what I did 🩵. It starts around the halfway point of the Diego theme song, right before the part that mentions Alicia and Baby Jaguar. 🩵

A trans-identified male is set to compete in a national women’s water polo championship this weekend, shortly after becoming a women’s chess champion in Michigan. Alicia, formerly Johnny, Paans, is a star member of the University of Michigan’s Women’s Water Polo club team.

Paans, 31, is expected to appear at the 2024 National Collegiate Water Polo Championships (CWPA), which will be held from May 3 to 5 at Texas A&M University. The competition includes 16 US-based teams vying for the women’s national title in their sport. Paans’ first game will be against Texas State University on May 3 at 9:00 GMT. 

Paans is expected to compete on the University of Michigan’s Women’s Club Water Polo team. The club’s official Instagram account recently named Paans as “player of the week,” boasting that he is also a state chess champion in the women’s category, having won second place at the Michigan Chess Association women’s open in 2022.

Paans also competed on the University of Michigan team in 2023, during which time they won the national women’s title against the University of California-Santa Barbara. In the same competition, Paans was noted to have scored goals in a 17 to 5 defeat against the University of Virginia, and in a 17 to 6 defeat against the University of Washington.

Outside of the sporting world, Paans has a history of involving himself in women’s issues, including volunteering as a counselor at a “hotline specialized in topics relating to female health and pregnancy.”

While it is unclear when Paans began to identify as a “woman,” a 2013 Facebook post reveals that friends still referred to him by his birth name while congratulating him for beginning his secondary education in his home nation of the Netherlands. Paans appears to have immigrated from Europe to California in 2017 when he began an internship for Volo San Diego — a social sports club — and has remained in the country for education ever since. In 2023, he began a social work degree at the University of Michigan.

According to the Independent Council on Women’s Sports (ICONS), the parents of Paans’ opponents have confirmed that he uses the female locker rooms and facilities when he competes.

Speaking to Reduxx, Jennifer, the mother of a female NCAA water polo athlete who participated in the 2023 national championship with Paans, explained it had been “obvious” that Paans was male from the moment she had seen him. Jennifer’s full name is being withheld for the protection of her daughter.

“My husband and I saw him first, standing aside the pool before [University of Michigan’s] first game. We looked at each other in surprise, and immediately knew it was a man,” she says, adding: “I observed Alicia quite a bit over the tournament, partly out of concern for the women, and also wondering how his teammates acted around him.”

Jennifer says she had been distressed by the thought that her daughter might have been forced to participate against a male, and was “relieved” when the match-up did not come to fruition.

“None of these women were initially aware a man had been allowed to play,” Jennifer noted. “Many of the player’s on my daughter’s team were almost in shock at the situation, and spoke to one another about discomfort with it. But to my knowledge, no one spoke to the organizers of the tournament. They felt that nothing would be done given that it was allowed based on [CWPA] policy.”

In January of 2024, the CWPA released a transgender athlete policy which explicitly allowed males to compete in women’s categories. The policy reads: “Transgender athletes who identify as female are eligible to compete in both the Co-ed League and the Women’s League.”

Trans identified males are also required to provide a “letter of confirmation” regarding their gender identity, either from the athlete or, if underage, a parent or guardian; proof of testosterone levels below 10 nmol/L within 60 days of competition; and a physician’s note to prove that the athlete is starting “physical gender transitioning/testosterone suppression.” The association purports to ensure “fairness, respect, and equal opportunities for all.”

The policy has been slammed by ICONS as a “pathway for men” to enter women’s water polo.

In an official statement, ICONS condemned the CWPA, highlighting the safety risks associated with allowing males to self-identify into contact sports.

“The Collegiate Water Polo Association has made it clear in their policy that they do not prioritize safe or fair competition for women in water polo,” said ICONS co-founder Marshi Smith. “Their discriminatory policy announcement came after they had crowned the University of Michigan team with a national title, despite utilizing a male player – a secret weapon not accessible to other women’s teams in the tournament.”

Smith continues that despite water polo being a high-contact sport, female athletes were thrown into the water with no disclosure of the added risks of competing against a male.

“This year’s national championships are shaping up to be a tragic deja vu of domination for the female opponents who simply seek a fair chance to succeed.”

How physical is water polo?

A: Very. As said before, water polo is a full-contact sport. This means that players are nearly always in contact with one another. In order to defend an offensive player, the defender keeps at least one hand on their player at all times. Players jostle each other the water in order to get control of the ball. Pushes and kicks, while not strictly legal in all situations, are common.

However, the physicality of the game is controlled by the referees. Kicking off of other players as well as holding or pushing them under water is against the rules.
