Mijn mening: #mijnmening #review #recensie Lente vooral op de cover Het boek bevat een aantal verhaallijnen die later in het boek samen komen. Een aantal personen die elkaar ontmoeten en samen uiteindelijk een avontuur tegemoet gaan. Het is een boek waar ik moeilijk inkwam. De stijl van schrijven vond ik erg wennen. Sommige stukken komen gehaast over door de stijl van schrijven. Het is dan ook zeker geen overbodige luxe om het boek te herlezen. Richard verliest in het begin van het boek zijn beste vriendin Paddy. Een vrouw die zeer sympathiek oip me overkwam en je hart steelt. Florence het mysterieuze en "onzichtbare" meisje komt op mij wat onwerkelijk over. Ik krijg dan ook geen hoogte van haar. Ik kan het gevoel niet schudden dat zij en de onzichtbare dochter van Richard uit hetzelfde hout gesneden zijn. Er zitten veel verwijzingen in naar zowel maatschappelijke issues als personen en situaties. Die personen hebben mij wel getriggerd om ze op te zoeken. Dus al met al een boek wat bij mij niet hoog in mijn top staat maar wel interessante punten meebracht. "Paddy waarom weet jij toch zoveel?" Sorry dat ik zoveel weet. Ik ben een uitstervend ras. With Summer, I’m finally at the end of my journey in completing Ali Smith’s seasonal quartet along with the seasons of the year. In hindsight, I think I would have got more from the experience if I had read each book closer to each other but hey, that’s what re-reading is for! ⁣ ⁣ I’m not going to be the best advocate for analysing Summer, especially in comparison to the other novels - plenty of reviewers have done a much better job and I highly recommend checking them out for a deeper, more stimulating analysis. I feel as if I perhaps missed out on the finer details because I read them with a time gap but I still left the quartet filled with an admiration and respect for what Ali Smith has done. ⁣ ⁣ I don’t think we’ve ever had such books that evoke the state of the country so close to the events which have occurred in recent years i.e. Brexit, the global pandemic, immigration crises. I found Summer particularly moving for the connections that were made between immigrants (and the attitude of some towards immigration) and how foreigners were treated during WWII. ⁣ ⁣ It’s not all dark and gloomy though, Ali Smith brings much light and hope amidst the dismal days to inspire and re-invigorate the reader. I’m currently making my way through Ali Smith’s seasonal quartet and I’m finally beginning to understand a little bit about why she is so revered. I’ve been reading them as the seasons roll round in Britain but I think they would really benefit from being read as close to each other as possible. ⁣ ⁣ Spring has two main narrative threads. The first follows Richard who has lost his best friend Patricia (Paddy) and sinks into depression. One day he decides to board a train to Scotland with no specific destination in mind. Then we have Brittany who works in a detention centre for migrants. Her life also changes one day when she meets a young girl called Florence and embarks with her on a journey up north. ⁣ ⁣ All characters end up connecting, talking and affecting each others lives because of the decisions they have chosen to make and the paths they have taken. As with the other novels in the quartet, Ali Smith expertly weaves through the stories of the moment - that is, the political upheaval, the Irish border issues and the immigration crisis to bring a remarkably human element to the story. ⁣ ⁣ Meanwhile, artists like Katherine Mansfield, Charlie Chaplin and Shakespeare are connected to both the past and our characters present to form a novel with so many layers that you could analyse it for hours and still find a tiny connection to the quartet as a whole that you may not have thought about. ⁣ ⁣ I don’t pretend to have realised just how many connections there are between the three novels I’ve already read in the Seasons Quartet but I’m fully aware of how clever this series of books actually is if you read them one after another and have the notion to delve a little bit deeper.
