Kurz nach Abschluss der Arbeit am zweiten Band waren wir für ein Interview verabredet. Über eine Stunde sprachen wir über die Herausforderungen der Adaption, die Zusammenarbeit mit der französischen Starautorin und die Wiederentdeckung der Musik durch die Arbeit am Comic, dessen erster Band nun in Deutschland erscheint. 📖Are You My Mother?📖 . I'd the topic of graphic novels comes up, I guarantee I will mention Fun Home by Alison Bechdel. Ever since I read Fun Home for a class early this year, I've been wanting to read Are You My Mother? When I was gifted it for my birthday, I dropped everything to read and and I definitely have some feelings. . This graphic novel follows Alison as she works through and tries to understand her relationship with her mother through therapy and the lens of psychoanalysis. I definitely related to many parts of this book and it made me reflect on my own family. Alison Bechdel is a prolific cartoonist who challenges antiquated views of women and LGBTQ individuals. In her own words, she champions the radical idea that “women- not just lesbians- are regular human beings." If her name sounds familiar, you may have head of the “Bechdel Test,” which determines the representation of women in a piece of media. The test asks if at least two (named) women talk to each other about something other than men. This has become a common starting point in many conversations about inclusion and representation in media.

Oh the nostalgia and formative queer representation. I came across Bechdel’s work in the 90’s. I think I’m the Advocate? I was playing in noise and riot grrl bands and was a scrawny small town punk. It was a smart, queer, political soap opera with tons of heart and deeply about chosen family. I read Fun Home by Alison Bechdel about a year ago (a little over, maybe) and I really loved it. So finally I got around to reading this sort of part 2 of the story. Where Fun Home focuses on Bechdel and her father, Are You My Mother focuses on, you guessed it, Bechdel and her mother. The discussion of psychoanalysis throughout the book was incredibly fascinating and, as with Fun Home, I loved the constant literary comparisons and metaphors. This is a dense read, and it took me a while to get through, but it is very personal and relatable, you just might have to work a little bit to understand parts.
