merlin who grew up in a small village and only having one (1) friend growing up (will) and them two being thick as thieves and not making friends with anyone else so they have like no boundaries and they eventually begin to court without really knowing what they’re doing but just knowing that they’re super close and care for each other deeply but not being able to put a name to what they are. which in turn leads to merlin growing up thinking that like spending 24/7 together, holding hands everywhere you go, staring into each others eyes and at each others lips, cuddling at night even when it’s boiling hot, and kissing is normal in platonic friendships which leads to a LOT of misunderstandings and miscommunication when he gets to camelot.

currently watching: i'm in that face where i'm watching a bunch of stuff simultaneously. i'm occasionally watching lucifer, watched the first ep of the one piece live action, rewatching good omens ad infinitum, watched half a season of outlander last week, and also finishing s3 and starting on s4 of the handmaid's tale. watched an episode of torchwood to know what was it about, too. as for anime, i watched the first episodes of Undead Girl Murder Farce and AI no Idenshi.

About a month ago (I thought it was longer!) I posted some ficlets with the promise that a longer Lancelot Lives Alt Season 4 full fic was coming. It has been going slowly. Like, "less than 15k words since then" slow. I started alt Servant of Two Masters literally with Mercelot Week and they've just found out that he's trying to kill Arthur slow. And I thought, you know, I could post another sneak peek.

A few days ago, I made myself sad writing the first conversation between Lancelot and Merlin since the latter went missing (not that the scene itself comes off as all that sad, it is from Fomorroh!Merlin, but I thought of how sad Lancelot would've been and well). Yesterday, I made this fic into a comedy:

“It’s probably best that we get there first,” Gwen tried to demur.

“We think Merlin might have been enchanted to kill Arthur,” Gaius said.

Gwen made a sound like a mix between a boiling kettle and a cat whose tail had been stepped on, but Lancelot didn’t pay it any mind.

“What?” he yelped and didn’t wait for an actual answer before breaking into a run. 

Fortunately, while the physician’s chambers were on the top of a tower, isolated from the rest of the castle, they’d also been placed close to the Royal Chambers. He burst through the doors not a minute later, just in time to see Merlin pull an arrow out of a pillar. Thinking only of that weapon in his hand (the danger to Arthur’s life, to Merlin’s life if he was caught after the act, how it’d break his heart if he hurt Arthur or worse) and not the startled look on his face or the bewildered question from behind the privacy screen, Lancelot launched himself at him.

They went down in a tangle of limbs.

“What on earth— Lancelot?!” Arthur exclaimed, running over. “What is going on?!”

“Get off me!” Merlin struggled like a fish on land.

“I just… hadn’t seen him since he came back!” Lancelot said, barely dodging an elbow to the face. “I’m so happy he’s alive!” he insisted, finally managing to wrap his arms around his torso to immobilize him.

“What are you talking about? We just saw each other in the Armoury!” It was a good thing Merlin had dropped the arrow when they fell, because Lancelot was pretty sure he’d have been stabbed by now otherwise. 

“I think you imagined that.” Lancelot was half trying to pin Merlin’s legs under his own, half trying to avoid a kick to any sensitive spot when Gwen arrived at the door, out of breath.

“Arthur, they need you at the Throne Room,” she gasped out. “You have to go.”

“Why would I ever torture myself by imagining more conversations with you? The ones I have to suffer through in reality are more than enough for any sane being,” Merlin said, still wriggling.

Lancelot shot Arthur a wide beam. “He’s so funny.”

Merlin took that moment of distraction to twist suddenly, getting his legs under himself. He might have gotten enough leverage to shake Lancelot off and stand up if Gwen hadn’t jumped on him as well.

“You too?!” Arthur demanded, arms spread. “You saw him this morning!”

“I missed him so much,” she explained, holding on for dear life.

Gaius appeared at the door and Arthur turned to him.

“Let me guess.” Arthur gestured wildly. “Do you want to drop to my floor?”

“No, sire,” Gaius answered, eyes narrowed. “Do you?”

Arthur made a strangled noise that choked itself into a laugh.

“Back to normal, then,” he sighed. He walked across the room, past the wrestling figures in the floor that became a lot more active when Merlin saw Arthur come within reach, and grabbed his ceremonial sword. “I better get going. You” —he waved a hand— “have fun.”

“Wait,” Merlin shouted after him. “Don’t you need me to—?”

Arthur slammed the door behind himself pointedly.

I am in a constant state of flux when it comes to shipping in BBC Merlin

One day I’ll be praising Merthur on their sassy dynamic & their stupidity with each other

And then other days I’ll see a Freylin or Arwen edit/picture & I go like „Aw they’re so cute & still manage to have an interesting dynamic”

Or I’ll see Merwaine & be SO grateful that the BBC Merlin writers made them meet bc they’re SO ICONIC

Or Mercelot with their solid friendship on which you could totally build an actually healthy relationship

Or Morgwen with the super cool bad bitch x sunshine aesthetic

Or any combination with the knights (a few examples: Gwaine/Percival, Gwaine/Lancelot, Percival/Elyan or EVEN BETTER MAKE IT POLY OR QUEERPLATONIC)

Mergwenthur are just THE perfect trio. Like they have everything. Whatever shit was toxic with Merthur completely disappears when Gwen (my beloved) enters on stage

Gwencelot is the most iconic knight x servant stuff I’ve ever seen (also: hello bi panic)

I read a fanfic with Morgana/Gwen/Lancelot & I gotta admit I was intrigued: you have 2 good souls on the 1 hand & a crazy bad bitch on the other to balance her out

Merdred is also super interesting bc they only have the enemies from enemies to lovers BUT there’s a chance for them to work ok (thank you fanfic writers, you all are a god sent)

There was also some tension with Morgana/Morgause (I know they’re sisters but you can’t deny there were certain undertones)

Lancelot/Arthur (Arcelot?? Arthcelot? Arlot? Arlance?) would also be an exciting knight x prince dynamic (you know the one. Where he says „my lord“ but actually means „my love“ uggghhh I can’t handle it). You could also twist the whole fiasco with their conflict over Gwen into a love story between the 2 & just say that Arthur had been jealous of Gwen OVER Lancelot

And when we’re already here: Arwencelot would just fix all the drama. Not to mention that they would give me bi panic & Gwencelot‘s healthy/calm aura could really make a better man out of Arthur & help him to grow out of his father’s shadow

I think the "got done dirty by fans" thing needs (a little) context because most fans love him, but in romance fanfiction he's often relegated to second best after Arthur. Maybe it's just me disliking Arthur a little, but I think Lancelot is better than Arthur in every way possible and having like 30% of all Mercelot fanfiction tagged "unrequited" or something similar because Lance can never be as good as Arthur is slightly annoying.

[Begin Image 1:] I, have been inspired, as I so often am, by my own life to create a little piece that goes like this. no research was done in the making of this fic.

Merlin and Lancelot work at a newspaper together. They have been desk mates for exactly one year and Merlin has no idea what Lancelot writes and at this point he's too afraid to ask.

Meanwhile, Lancelot is always asking Merlin how his work is going, and because Merlin is Merlin it never occurs to him to just read the other sections of the paper to find out what Lancelot writes and he is desperate for Lancelot never to know that Merlin doesn't know.

Lancelot is a sports writer. It's not really his jam, but he's good at it and it pays the bills. He just sometimes wishes that he could do something more.

Anyway, Lancelot invites Merlin to go and see a sport with him on a Wednesday and Lancelot is smiling when he asks and Merlin is pretty sure that this is a date.

It is not a date. Lancelot is thinking of it like a pre-date, but Merlin doesn't know that this is a work thing for Lancelot so he thinks it must be a date.

They go to the sports thing, and Merlin is low key hurt that Lancelot spends the whole time taking notes. Like. Rude.

It never occurs to Merlin that Lancelot might be a sports writer because Merlin has very intelligent and thought provoking conversations with Lancelot, so he must write something deeper than sports. Merlin has prejudices that we're ignoring.

anyway, the next day Merlin kind of gives Lancelot the cold shoulder because Lancelot wouldn't even go for a drink with him after their date (pre-date). Merlin is being weird and Lancelot has no idea why. Maybe he shouldn’t have taken him [End Image 1]

[Begin Image 2:] to a work thing. He resolves to apologize at lunch, but Merlin disappears?Lancelot can't find him anywhere? He's gone to get lunch with Gwaine and complain about His Not Date.

Gwaine gets through the first sentence of Merlin's story and goes "Lancelot took you to a work thing? Wow He really likes  you. He won't even take me to work things with him and I do the photography. He always makes me sit away from him because I chat too much.”

"I'm sorry. Work thing?"

"Yeah, Lancelot was doing the coverage for that game last night. Did he not tell you? I mean, even if he didn't, as soon as he pulled out his notepad I would've thought it was obvious.

Merlin looks Miserable.

"Lancelot writes sports?"

"Yeah... What did you think he did?"

"I don't know!"

Merlin goes ahead and goes back to work to talk to Lancelot who looks a little bit like someone just kicked his puppy, and awww that makes Merlin feel worse.

"Did they like your article? About the game last night?”

Lancelot beams because Merlin never asks about his work!

"Yeah, they did. Said it was my best one in ages. I think you might be my good luck charm."

"Well, maybe we should do it again sometime.”

Lancelet is so happy and smiling and goes "Yeah, I would like that."

And they became the office romance to end all office romances and eventually Gwaine told Lancelot Merlin didn't know what kind of writing he did.
