I noticed her eyes once for the first time: they were green, and blue, and brown. They were the colors of the earth. And that revelation has stuck in my brain and I have many feelings about it.

they do! the abyssals do in fact have bioluminescence (including miranda), since they're deep-living animals that ingest a lot of the bacteria that produces light already, and it helps them to convey emotions when its a lot harder to see their fins and how they're positioning themselves. which is mostly what it's used for, really. it's not a very powerful light and you can't even see it in daylight, and its arranged in very fine rows and dots along their bodies. the largest pockets of this bacteria is along their fins and the patterns on their limbs + tail and they always glow blue (its the only color that bacteria produces, alas). they are not born with it and have to obtain this bacteria through their environment, and if they take antibiotics they can accidentally kill their own bacterial colonies, but they can get it back if they eat some bacterial-culture infused food (which is already common, since its a fun party trick to have if you're making your own food).

they do! each merfolk species has their own color palette and specific patterns, plus there are common color mutations and less common color mutations to think about. unfortunately i'm trying to make myself stick as strictly as i can to each species' distinct patterns and colors to mimic real life animals and their highly restricted natural colorations, so there's far less variation among related individuals. in fact, if there seems to be wildly varied colors, then the chances are that you're looking at a merfolk who has recent ancestry of another species of merfolk hybridized in.

there's not sexual dimorphism! both because merfolk aren't the type of animal that would have a lot of sexual dimorphism in the first place, but also because i decided to fully commit to merfolk entirely and only having bisex individuals. i could go into the evolution of that trait of theirs and it being something that appeared throughout their lineage, some species with unisex individuals still extant or no bisex individuals at all, but the line that led to merfolk experienced the total extinction of both male and female merfolk.

i am suddenly incredibly drawn to pink fabric. ig i have been since i bought this mauve-y pink sweatshirt in august or so. but rn my brain is fully in pink-fervor mode.

this evening, i bought a pattern that reminded me of a designer i really like and i found this remnant pink cotton online that has little embroidered dots all over it in different colors and i’m so. yes. more. MORE.
