Road to Cream 64 v1 Part 6-1: All These Bangers and You Chose Lost World?

Boy oh boy, finally getting to this part: the new soundtrack. Before going on about the stuff above, I wanna mention that I consider myself lucky to get started with this hack around the time streaming audio was a lot easier to implement to hacks.

The process before was to either a) grab a midi from anywhere, mostly like vgmusic.com and try to convert it to the mario 64 soundfont. or b) grab an existing converted sequence, or .m64, file and place it in your hack under the right soundbank. You were limited to what was out there but I mean it saved you from figuring out how to fiddle with soundbanks and midi stuff.

Streaming audio did way with that. Thanks to a tool called sm64-audio-manager, all you had to do is figure out your loop point and compression and it would automatically place it in your decomp. Course, the one drawback to streaming audio was size: your rom will slowly bloat with each track you add. Compression does help a lot, but you're still at the mercy of keeping it under 64 megs (well if you're doing it for N64). If you're a sane hacker, then this is not a problem. Sadly, I ain't one of those people, as you can see above.

As for my selection, I just had a few rules. 1) avoid the most chiptuney tracks which meant no direct Genesis or GBA tracks. Why exactly I added this initially I think was just so that I had something that sounded crisp cause I didn't know what the compression could do. Honestly sounds like a bad excuse looking back and I threw out this rule for v2.

The second rule was try to vary up the soundtrack if possible. Use as many games from this franchise and not stick to specifically one game for too long. This ended up being more problematic cause of one particular Sonic game being way too close to Mario and skewing my choices.

File Select: Sonic Jam - Game Select & Museum

As you can see in the google sheet, File Select was originally meant to be Game Select from Sonic Jam. The only reason for the change was to save on space to get things under 64 MBs. This could've been easily solved with using a lower the Hz for the songs but nope, keep things all at 32k Hz, don't ever consider dropping it.

Anyway, the reason this track was chosen was it was the only midi on vgmusic.com for Sonic Jam that fit. Heck, I think it's the only midi for that game period on that site. But hey, it does work.

Peach Castle: Sonic Adventure 2 - Hero Garden

This was a friend's suggestion since initially I was just looking at normal hubs like Station Square, which was actually the first song I tried as a test. Pretty relaxing and suited Cream cause chao stuff, it made sense. It does get changed down the line but for reasons I'll explain whenever I talk about the PC version.

Bob-Omb Battlefield: Nights: Journey Into Dreams - Eloquent Echo: Fluffy Catch

Choosing a song for what is considered the default grass stage was kind of tough cause Sonic has a bunch of those. So I just asked around and same friend as before gave me this track. Having only played a teeny bit of the Wii Nights I had no real idea what I was end for but it did sound pretty good for this level.

Not like the original track was any less fitting for a stage about a battlefield so it stuck with it. I've had thought of swapping it out for something from the original Nights for v5 but only time will tell I guess.

Whomp Fortress: Sonic Adventure - Windy Hill (Windy Valley 1)

This was one of those I had in my head playing when figuring out tracks. The stage was already in the sky and while not built on a mountain, some terrain did fit. Honestly, the first and third part of Windy Valley could fit and in v4 I would eventually make that change.

Jolly Roger Bay: Sonic CD - Tidal Tempest (JP/EU)

This was one of those that made too much sense, especially when you enter the level for the first with all the fog everywhere. It was also here that I learned that there's not a lot of slow paced water tracks in Sonic, so I'm at least glad I had a few to work with here for this and DDD.

Cool, Cool Mountain: Sonic Runners - Magical Snow Day Actually Used: Sonic Lost World - Snowball Waltz

Ahh, Sonic Runners, wish you didn't die an early death but such is life I guess. There was a lot of incredible tracks and shame they all died with this gacha. This was something I personally wanted cause I enjoyed the upbeat melody to help counteract how frustrating this level can be.

It never made it into the final v1, being replaced with a track from Sonic Lost World, Snowball Waltz. I wanna say the reason was that Runners tracks are generally pretty lengthy before they reach a logical loop point so that was just bloating the rom. Just an unfortunate casually to my laziness for proper compressing.

Big Boo's Haunt: Sonic Heroes - Hang Castle Merry-Go-Round: Knuckles' Chaotix - Child's Song

It's funny to think that BBH is the level that's gotten the most music changes in all these updates, but this was the original one I started with. The way I had it looped was that it would start with the reverse track before going to the normal track and it just loops the normal track till you get the vanish cap in which case it starts from the beginning again. Maybe that's why I swapped it, it's hard to say.

I've had thought of brining it back but doing a proper loop of just the normal track and using the reverse for the merry-go-round. Depends on how well I can pull it off. For the Merry-Go-Round, I wanted that still felt uneasy but also short cause you're hardly there and someone suggested this. It's funny that this song would influence me to change the main level track for v2 cause of it's similarities but that'll wait for another day.

Strategies to Pass Upper-level College Courses

After passing 2 semesters of organic chemistry and a semester of biochemistry at Penn, I think it's safe to say that I took away a few strategies for studying and actually performing well in upper level science courses. Keep in mind that neuroscience is my college major, so these chem courses were a big struggle but I managed to score above average on most of exams/ quizzes. Also keep in mind, these strategies may not work for everyone, so listen to what your gut tells you-- to each their own!

Strategy 1: Record your lectures 

We live in an age where technology is literally at our fingertips, so why wouldn't you take advantage of what you have? Record your lectures! Let's be real, if you have a 9am chemistry lecture, chances are your mind is going to drift off a time or two. Instead of stressing about trying to write everything down and missing key points, record the lecture. By doing this you can listen to the lecture later without distraction, and if you don't understand something you have the entire lecture at your disposal. Also, if your professor talks a million miles an hour, you can slow down the audio. Really guys, this hack is a game changer.

Strategy 2: Transcribe

This hack is my personal favorite, but it is definitely not for everyone. It takes patience. It takes motivation. It takes a venti coffee and an abundance of snacks… You need to transcribe your lectures. Now I am not saying you have to type every word your professor mentions (although I did do that), but you need to type the key points. I know that some people might find this a little time consuming, but this is what is going to help you a TON during finals. Think about it... during finals week are you really going to remember anything your professor mentioned during the 2nd week of classes? Probably not. If you do this you will literally have all of your teacher's main points written on paper and you won't need to watch/listen to any lectures. It's a wonderful feeling, I promise.

Strategy 3: Don’t read the text

This hack is a little risky, but I think it's worth it. Don't waste your time reading the assigned textbook, especially for a chemistry or science course. These courses are so challenging that most teachers only expect you to know the information that was mentioned in class. If you need the textbook for clarification about a topic discussed in lecture, then by all means read the textbook! But don't spend hours reading a chapter with information that your professor is not going to cover. The textbook is supplemental and it should be used to supplement lecture. It is not meant to replace lecture.

Strategy 4: Use powerpoint 

This hack only applies if your professor uses pdf or power-point lectures in class. If so, you should 100% type your notes on power-point. The reason I say this is because when you go to review your notes it will be so much easier to see what topic your notes are referring to because you'll have your professors slides right there. Chances are the slides contain valuable information that will be on the exams, so reviewing the slides at the same time as your written notes will ensure you are covering all your bases and reviewing all testable material. If your professor uses pdfs, just use smallpdf.com to convert the file-- it's fast and totally free.

Strategy 5: Save notes on your computer 

I understand that some professors swear off computers in the classroom, so they may not always be an option for students to use during lecture. I don't know about you, but by the middle of the semester my papers are scattered around my house, lost, and/or accidentally thrown away. So to solve this issue I've been using a scanner app to import my notes to my computer. This means you have the best of both worlds! You can write your notes, highlight, and doodle, but you can keep everything organized in one folder on your desktop. If you're really feeling fancy you can even upload the files to google drive so you can access them from any computer! This hack makes me feel like Monica Geller from friends and I am obsessed. 

I know that none of these hacks discuss actually studying strategies, but these are the hacks that made studying so much less of a hassle for me during college. Try them out and let me know your thoughts. As always, feel free to message me with any questions!

OptimusPhillip Reviews 28: Transformers Generations Rewind (Titans Return)

Happy Pride Month to all my LGBTQ+ followers. While I myself am cishet, I firmly support the rights of people to love whoever they want or to identify however they feel most comfortable. And in honor of Pride Month, I have decided to do something of a double feature this weekend to cover my favorite gay couple in Transformers. Today, I will be reviewing Titans Return Rewind, and tomorrow it will be Titans Return Chromedome.

Tank Mode

Starting with the mode that appears on the front of the package, Rewind transforms into what I can only describe as a super space tank. And as far as Titans Return versions of the G1 cassettes go, he comes out as a pretty solid little tank. The main body is cast in black, as one would expect from a Rewind, with the turret molded in gray to set it apart. The treads are fully molded on both the sides and the bottom, and they even molded a slight taper into the front of the tank, to give the illusion that it could get over terrain, though this effect is kind of ruined by the ridge across the bottom. Also, the front end itself is hollowed out for transformation, which is understandable, but at the same time I feel like it could’ve been done better.

In terms of deco, the wheels in the treads are picked out in a nice bright silver, which also appears on the corners of the tank’s “hood”. There’s also a red paint app picking out what I assume is the tank’s hatch, and the same red appears on the rear side panels, rounding out the visible paint apps on this mode. It’s not a lot of paint, but with how small the figure is and how well the colors play together, I think it works.

In terms of function, the tank mode is rather limited. He rolls around on three small wheels, and the main cannon can pivot up and down, but the turret itself can’t rotate due to how the figure converts. Again, however, I can forgive some shortcomings due to the small size. And of course, being a Titans Return figure means he can interact with Titan Masters. He has two pairs of pegs on his turret, so you can mount at least two Titan Masters, and up to four if you stand them just right. It’s a nice feature, though plastic tolerances may prevent some figures from mounting securely. In my case, Firedrive has no friction holding him in place, so he’s only really held on by gravity.

Overall, for a Legends Class toy, the tank mode is pretty decent. Nothing to write home about, but it's fairly robust and it looks alright. That said, I don’t see this as the figure’s main mode, so let’s move on.

Spy Tablet Mode

Removing the main cannon, rotating the turret halves to the side and then unfolding them gives what I consider this toy’s main alternate mode, the spy tablet. While less than half the size of a typical smartphone, he manages to look the part surprisingly well. The tank mode hatch now becomes the home button, and there’s an additional red paint app on the top, but most of the detail comes from the tablet screen itself. The wallpaper is obviously based on his G1 microcassette mode, but with a bit more techy detail and of course some phone icons overlaid. Across the top, he has four bars of cell service and Wi-Fi connectivity, 50-75% battery power remaining, and a running microphone. And across the bottom, he has a text editor, file manager, instant messenger, and e-mail app installed. Also, strangely enough, he has three Autobot symbols: one on top of the tablet, and two on the screen itself.

While the detailing on the screen is nice, it’s all done as sticker detailing, which does come with its fair share of problems. In addition to the problem of lifting off the plastic, the stickers may not be cut and aligned correctly. In my case, the right-hand tape reel is not a perfect circle, and the tape window is a little wider. This also means that the bottom of the cassette doesn’t line up. Also, the printing on the stickers may fade overtime with wear and tear. So while I’m glad that there’s so much detail going on, the stickers could’ve been a lot better. 

It’s still a nice mode overall, however. There’s storage for his main cannon on the side, where you’ll also find a molded power button. You can even pretend that the gun is a stylus, though I doubt this is intentional. But my favorite feature in this mode is that, on the bottom left-hand side, there is a 3.5 mm hole which can accept an aux audio cable. So you can plug in a set of headphones and roleplay this as a real smart device, though it doesn’t connect as securely as the real thing. Mileage may vary on that front, however.

And of course, the big feature of this figure is that it can store in the chest of the Leader Class Blaster/Soundwave mold... which I do not own, so I cannot comment on the effectiveness of this feature. If I ever do obtain that figure, however, I will do a review of it where I follow up on this.

Conversion

Remember to remove the gun from the side of the tablet before turning into robot or tank modes! Otherwise you will bend or even break the barrel. With that little PSA out of the way, going to robot mode is more complex than going from tank to tablet, but that isn’t saying much. Simply unpeg the side panels and fold them back up like in tank mode. This will be very difficult out of the box, and comes with a real risk of breakage. This can be mitigated by filing down the corners, however. Next, split the front of the tank and unfold it to become the legs. Flip the rear wheels up to form the feet, then split the top of the tablet to form the shoulders. Rotate the biceps, then open the chest and flip out the head to complete the robot mode.

Robot Mode

Rewind’s robot mode is definitely based on his IDW appearance, with the red paint apps on his shoulders, and of course the head sculpt, complete with visor and camera unit. Some sacrifices are made for the sake of his alternate modes, but it’s very clear where the inspiration came from.

Very few new details are exposed here. The only new paint apps are the tampographs on his chest to give him his gold pecs as well as the Autobot symbol. Aside from the head sculpt, most of the new detail comes from the arms, which are actually molded somewhat asymmetrically. While his right arm looks normal, his left arm is hollowed out and has an additional piston molded in. While not a bad look once you get used to it, it’s definitely a bit weird, and seems to be purely due to plastic content restrictions, which is a bit unfortunate.

Articulation-wise, Rewind has full neck rotation, ball-jointed shoulders, bicep swivels and 90 degree elbows. No waist joint, but he does have ball-jointed hips and knees which give him a nice range of motion. Overall, the figure is very posable, though the bulky arms can clash in some poses.

For weapons, Rewind gets the main cannon from tank mode as his rifle. It has a standard 5mm handle, so he can hold it in either hand, or swap it for any other standard weapon, presumably even his G1 weapons. He also has a port on the side of his right arm. While this seems to just be an artifact of how he stores it in tablet mode, this does allow him to mount his rifle on his forearm, much like the G1 toy did. You can also partially unfold the arm and thread the gun through the same slot it stored in earlier, giving him something of an underslung cannon. Personally, however, I prefer the side mounted style.

Rewind stands about waist-high with Titans Return Deluxe Autobot cars. This does put him in comic accurate scale, which means that he will look nice alongside your other IDW figures, including, of course, Chromedome.

Final Thoughts

Titans Return Rewind is an alright figure. Nothing stellar, but very decent overall. His tank mode is surprisingly effective, his spy tablet mode is a lot of fun to just play around with, and weird arms aside, his robot mode looks and poses really well, If you can find him for around his original retail price of around US$10, I’d say you should pick him up, especially if you’re a fan of his IDW portrayal, and can also get your hands on the subject of tomorrow’s review.

Searching online for "free video converter" will give you hundreds if not thousands of options to choose from, but today I want to highlight some important points to consider, when deciding which conversion tool to use. In an overview, these points are:

1. Identify the file upload size restrictions (2MB really isn't that much).

2. Did you check if there is any loss of quality in the conversion?

3. Do free file converting tools keeps your files on their server? (Privacy?)

4. Watch for typos in extensions (MOVIEMP4.MP3?)

5. Check if the file converting tool has upload quantity restriction.

Because these free file converters rely on computing power the convert files into other output formats, there is a cost associated with the conversion process. A common strategy to mitigate bulky computing (video formats for example, tend to be quite large), is to restrict upload file size. Tools like Zamzar have a restriction of 50MB and others, like TinyPng, restrict upload files to just 2MB (though it is meant for smaller files in general). Different file formats have different sizes, and file conversions from SOME formats to others, requires full file re-writing, for example the conversion of video codecs. Your best bet is to identify an online file converter that has zero limitations on file upload size.

2. Did you check if there is any loss of quality in the conversion?

Depending on the file output type, you may wish to identify if there was any lossy conversion. In the music space, a WAV file is intended to be lossless, but converting MP3s to WAVs doesn't guarantee that the output audio files are completely lossless. For most people, this loss in bits is not noticeable but for others, it can be a big difference. Another format to identify lossless file types is PDFs. If your output file appears blurry when reading, there's a good chance that quality was reduced. Some of the free file converters online do this to mitigate cost of computing power. If you're converting high quality file formats, you might want to consider investing in a powerful software (Final Cut Pro for video, for example) to handle these conversions. Otherwise, I suggest monitoring your output files after using a file converter online, to identify if there was loss in quality. You can also check input vs output file size, as a smaller output size MAY indicate compression (but keep in mind that file types compress their bits differently).

3. Do free file converting tools keeps your files on their server?

Security and privacy are extremely important nowadays, especially when it comes to your digital files. Converting a highly classified PDF for your business through an online converter might not be protocol, but you should always check if the converter software/website handles the conversions on your browsers end or on their own servers. If the latter, this likely means that your files are being downloaded directly into their backend, where they can have full visibility and control of them. In most cases, there isn't an actual person watching the files for potentially valuable information, but that doesn't mean there isn't a risk. Some free file converter websites will make a note whether they directly download your input file to their servers, but not all.

4. Watch for typos in extensions

This is a tip that mostly falls on the users end- by mindful of typos in your file names. Some operating systems will give you trouble if you try to manually change an extension name from download (macOS for example) and instead of the FILENAME.MP4 that you intended, you'll end up with FILENAMEMP4.MP3 or something similar. Downloading output files from a free file converter online could also yield problematic file extensions, especially when attempting to convert and download videos from direct URLs (YouTube videos for example). Video converter softwares are pretty complex, so do your due diligence and make sure your output file type is as intended. Consider attempting one file conversion before your entire batch?

5. Check if the file converting tool has upload quantity restriction.

A final hurdle that many online converter present, is upload quantity. Much like our first point regarding file size, these converter tools rely on computing power, and if you're sending hundreds of thousands of files through it at once, it could rack up some pretty hefty charges. Services like Zamzar get around this by setting a limit of 2 files per 24 hour period, but that obviously makes it a pay-to-play service, not exactly ideal for everyone. Your best bet is to find a free online file converter that has zero restrictions on quantity of files (and perhaps even offer a batch conversion feature), which would speed up those bulk file moments.

Conclusion

Online file converters have truly revolutionized the flexibility of digital file management, offering seemingly endless conversion possibilities all at a moments notice. There are however, certain pros and cons to using these tools, as well as variety in the flexibility that they provide. Do your due diligence when converting that next file, and pick a tool that gets the job done right.

It’s a fact that form and function are significant factors when buying a cell phone but performance is the most decisive dynamic to be considered. Never forget that a cell phone is only as good as the calls it makes. Thus, even if your handset has the best attributes but can’t make or take a single decent quality call, it’s virtually useless. Even the snatchers in Quiapo and Arranque won’t spend a New York minute trying to filch your phone.

It’s not a new PC but it’s still quite fast pa rin, debba?

NVIDIA believes that the future of GPUs on smart phones is no different than the future of PC GPUs. Basically, the Tegra 2 processor was designed for a tablet PC. But the guys at LG wanted to give the Optimus more computing nitrous (The Fast and The Furious speak right there) so they basically put an F22 Raptor jet engine in a Mazda RX7. The result is a cell phone that runs in machs not in miles, if you get my drift — my Tokyo Drift.

Now, imagine that Tegra powering your cell phone. Like a mobile phone on nitrous, the LG Optimus excels at multi-tasking between applications and boosts superior web browsing performance. Start-up times of programs /apps and games are suddenly in turbo speed. Your phone will always be sober (alive, alert and enthusiastic) unlike other phones which are as hard to wake up as “pess droonk” English hooligans who’ve had too much Vino Kulafu after watching a Manchester United match.

A dual-core powered cell phone augmented with a 512 MB RAM means you can run multiple applications simultaneously without reducing everything to a grinding crawl. You can switch between applications while maintaining your MS Office Word document or your Excel spreadsheets. Like most tablet PCs in the market today, the LG Optimus is driven by the Android 2.2 Froyo.

The Android OS is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. Google Inc. purchased the initial developer of the software, Android Inc., in 2005. Android’s mobile operating system is based on the Linux kernel. Google and other members of the Open Handset Alliance collaborated on Android’s development and release.

The Android Open Source Project is tasked with the maintenance and further development of Android. The Android operating system is the world’s best-selling Smartphone platform. Android has a large community of developers writing applications or apps that extend the functionality of the devices. There are currently over 200,000 apps available for Android.

The Android Market is the online app store run by Google, though apps can also be downloaded from third-party sites. Developers write primarily in the Java language, controlling the device via Google-developed Java libraries.

While I was in Divisoria to buy some Naruto and Gundam action figures, I visited Jeney Tan, my favorite tablet PC vendor at 168 Mall. She is all out for the Froyo. She explained to me every conceivable feature and advantage of the OS including the accelerometer which tilts everything you see when you hold the gadget in landscape or portrait mode.

Jeney even made bida about the Android 2.3 Gingerbread that should be in the market by now. Pre-loaded with Froyo, the LG Optimus is upgradable to Gingerbread. Adding my own flawed logic, I informed her that Gingerbread is a big leap from Froyo that when the cell phone’s display is held in portrait or landscape mode, it actually tilts the user in that orientation. She then looked me straight in the eye and said the words that I will never forget, “Ser, bebele ba kayo?”

Like a bowl of frozen yogurt during hot summer nights, Froyo (short for frozen yogurt) is a refreshing approach to using tablet PCs and high-end, high performance phones like the LG Optimus.

The Way It’s Meant To Be Played

Before I got the LG Optimus, I had one of those popular media players made by a US company named after a red or green fruit (and no, it’s not a berry). The video playback and quality was okay but among my long list of peeves was that it played a limited number of video formats if not just one which is MP4.

The video format is okay for my cell phone and my computer. But my other portable player has trouble playing MP4s and only plays Windows Media Video formats. So, I had to convert videos to MP4 for my portable media player and into WMV format for my family’s other video player and for movie / video archiving.

It’s in playing various video formats that the LG Optimus shows its true awesomeness. Because it plays and supports multiple video codecs (plus DivX / XviD video support), I don’t have to convert / encode my movies or videos over and over again for viewing and archiving. That saves me time. Precious time that I can waste playing Tekken.

Beyond video support, the Optimus wows us with its display.

I remember the first time I saw the Optimus at an LG outlet glass shelf, I was really amazed at the proportions — 34-22-32. Uh, okay, that was the vital statistics of the salesgirl who look liked Megan Fox. What struck me was that the screen seemed bigger than my touch phone. Asking Megan, I mean the salesgirl, I discovered that my other phone only had a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display while the Optimus had a 4.0 inch display (all the better to see Megan Fox with).

The Optimus is equipped with a 16M-color capacitive IPS LCD touch-screen of WVGA resolution (480 x 800 pixels). It has a HDMI port which you can use for HDMI mirroring. Just connect it to a wider screen or an HD TV and experience the most vivid and life-like videos this side of Cybertron.

Because the phone is able to play in full HD through any monitor, you see every detail of Jennifer’s Body in astonishing clarity and sexiness.

I usually watch videos and movies over large monitors when I’m with my family. Most of the time though, I’m using the LG Optimus to catch up on the latest movies while waiting for the FX or the van at the terminal. The viewing experience is just as good as the big screen which can sometimes make you feel that your head is going to be eaten by a giant 3D piranha.

But the best place to watch is in bed – relaxed and alone. And with the Optimus phone’s superior theater-like sound and HD video, I feel like I will have to save Bella again in the upcoming Twilight XXV: Vampire Sequels Without End.

Take Your Best Shot

The LG Optimus possesses an 8 MP autofocus camera with an LED flash for insufficiently lighted areas like bars, discotheques, concerts and internet cafes / Counterstrike fragging rooms. It prioritizes people over things and stuff with that Photoshop-friendly face detection feature.

I could stop ranting about the phone’s super astig camera right here and you’d be convinced by its performance. But since I like listening to myself talk, let me continue.

Just for the camera phone, I’d sell my other touch screen phone made by a company named after a pomaceous fruit of the species Malus domestica. Compared with LG Optimus phone’s 8 MP camera, my other phone has a measly 5-megapixel still camera (boy, is it cool — NOT!).

Hands down, pants down – the LG Optimus takes the matrix of leadership in still camera shooting.

When the folks at LG designed the Optimus, they had the young Spielbergs and fledgling George Lucases in their mind. Empowering the YouTube generation, they imbued the phone with the ability to do 1080p video recording at 24fps and 720p at 30fps. I have a JVC Everio HD camcorder that does the same – and it’s a full-fledged video recorder! How the LG people managed to cram a lufet video recorder inside the Optimus phone’s sleek frame is beyond my comprehension. But that’s why they’re geniuses, you see.

And if you’re in a Miley Cyrus or Katy Perry concert and want to record the whole thing, there’s plenty of internal storage (8 GB) and a micro SD slot for 32 GB cards.

Even with just a video recorder match-up, the LG Optimus slaughters the leading, popular competitor which can only record VGA-quality videos at 30 frames per second with the front camera.

For me, dinner time at the mall is always a constant battle. Whether I’m having meals at Gumbo, Tokyo Café, Banana Leaf, Bacolod Chicken Inasal, Koryo or Gerry’s Grill (all located at SM City The Block), I’m always wishing that my cell phone would successfully find and connect to the free WiFi available at the mall. Most of the time, I’m victorious as the Azkals and in rare occasions it’s like The Battle of Bull Run, Masada, Pearl Harbor and the Fall of Bataan all rolled into one.

But these days, with the LG Optimus, my WiFi struggles are like a walk in the park – the Sandara Park. Its WiFi is at 802.11 b/g/n which means it decently performs whenever you need to update your Twitter account while feasting on that plate of spicy Jambalaya or Garlic Potato.

A phone that can connect to Wi-Fi hotspots enables you to surf the Web or transfer data at much higher speeds. Even if your phone supports 3G networks, you may want Wi-Fi support, too, as it tends to be faster and more reliable than cellular networks. It can be cheaper, too, since surfing on a Wi-Fi network doesn’t require using your carrier’s service.

One of the best innovations of the LG Optimus Black is the enhancement and the durability of its LCD display. The LCD screen’s contrast and backlight strengths are indispensable for any cell phone. Ironically, it isn’t the darkness of the night that makes images or text unreadable – it’s the bright glare of sunlight which makes thing harder to peruse.

I usually ride shotgun in the FX or van which makes sunlight shine directly on my lap – the exact area where I would be reading an e-book (currently it’s Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic — Deceived). The brightness of the morning sun defeats the LCD screen making the e-book unreadable. It’s the same problem when I watch episodes of Gunny’s Lock and Load – the video is too bomalabs.

That’s the reason why I scored a cell phone capable of counter-acting the brightness factor. The Black’s 4” NOVA display has 700 nits of brightness, 16M-color WVGA capacitive IPS LCD unit. It’s the brightest cell phone screen in the world making outdoor viewing in broad daylight friendlier to the eyes.

Is It Safe?

In the movie, The Marathon Man, the Nazi operative Szell (Laurence Olivier) repeatedly asked Babe (Dustin Hoffman) “Is it safe?” He was referring to the bag of diamonds Szell had procured at the height of the Third Reich. Of course Babe had no idea what it was all about and he got tortured severely for it.

I mentioned that movie for two reasons. First, one of my favorite actors is Dustin Hoffman. Second, most cell phone users are like that Szell character in the movie – they’re always asking the manufacturers “Is it safe?” referring to their handsets.

One of the most sensitive and most exposed parts of the cell phone is its screen or LCD display. Which is the reason why the kinfolks at LG made sure their units were ready for the vicious bump and grind of everyday buhay. If you’ve listened to FM radio lately, you’ll notice that it sounds more like the AM band than what we’ve always known what FM sounds like. Besides the proliferation of talk shows, there are advice and counseling programs, jokes, skits and the proverbial balahura and balasubas DJs who dish out salitang kalye or palingkera style observations on politics, showbiz, romance, work and the intricacies of life.

The rise of the balahura and the balasubas DJs may have something to do with the surge of portable media players that can load up more music MP3s than one can possibly play in one whole day or work week. Thus, if it’s just listening to music that you’re after, you don’t need FM radio. You just need a media player and be your own DJ and choose your music line-up day after day.
