Thank you so much for your recommendations! I’ve heard a lot about Genshin Impact and the games from the Final Fantasy franchise, the graphics are wonderful and the storylines look very compelling 🤭

Omg, I grew up playing Sims City and Animal Crossing and I spent a lot of hours on them ahaha. I’m sure your city is wonderful, citizens are always unfulfilled and I never knew where to put industries without lowering the happiness level of the city 😅

Coffee Talk seems like an amazing game! I’ve always loved games where you're a barista in a coffee shop and where you can interact with customers, they’re very relaxing and a nice way to spend time :)

The snk games 💀 about a year ago I was constantly checking prices waiting for them to go down but they never went down and I lost hope in the end. They’re not even recent games so I don't know how much we'll have to wait🙃

If you like puzzle and strategy games I recommend those from the Tomb Rider franchise and if you have a switch you should really try The legend of Zelda Breath of the wild. The storyline is long and addictive and there are plenty of side missions so you can continue playing even after you finish the main quest 😊

I'm still doing okay I guess!! Still feeling a little stressed up over work and school stuff and not being able to write but it's okay!! I'm slowly dealing with it! Don't worry hehe. Of course I'm glad to talk to you!!!! It makes me so happy to know that you love talking to me too 💕

I'm a huge RPG fan so a lot of my favourite games are all RPG!! I love grinding for side quests more than actually clearing the main game content xD and yes, the graphics of these games are so beautiful, especially genshin impact hehe. Sometimes I just idle in the game to listen to the OST and look at the scenery 😄 the amount of money I've spent on genshin impact though... 💀

OMG YES EXACTLY. My citizens are never satisfied, I have bad traffic issues, my city's income rises and falls faster than the cryptocurrency market, my citizens don't want to take the public transport I built for them.... you know how I feel!!!! At least I have mods to make my different districts pretty.... 😪

Oh yes Coffee Talk is a really great game even though there's no replay value haha since it's a linear story telling game!!! But it's so relaxing and a good way to earn trophies too 🤭 the developers are even coming out with a second game too and I'm so excited for it!!!

Sigh the snk games..... I wanted to get them and the dlc pack last year during steam's year end sales but I didn't...... and I regretted it boooooo!! I could have had the chance of seeing Levi in the leather jacket and the vampire costume 🥲 steam if you can hear me please have another flash sales!!!!

Oh I've heard about Zelda!!! And yes the scenery in Zelda is really breathtaking too!!! Another game with absolutely stunning visuals is Ghost of Tsushima and after waiting for sooooo long, it's finally free for PS Plus members 😭 I can't wait to play it!! But currently I'm playing a game called Judgement on the ps4, it's a spin off game from the Yakuza franchise and also developed by Sega hehe. But yay thanks for the recommendations too dear 🧸!!! I'll definitely check the Tomb Raider games out!!

I was tagged by @aurltas to share ten things about myself! Thanks for the tag and also sorry for taking like a day or two to actually write this stuff down XD

1.       I enjoy doing fiber arts and related crafts. I learned spinning and needle felting at a music camp a while back and I’ve always adored Tamora Pierce’s circle of magic books. I’m progressively getting better at spinning but once I have yarn I have literally nothing to do with it because I don’t enjoy knitting or crocheting. I would love to get into embroidery as well I have so many hobbies. Also, I’m not sure it counts as fiber arts but I’ve been getting into Chinese decorative knot tying and that’s also fun but makes my hands hurt.

2.       I’ve never thought of myself as a super athletic jock person but I’ve usually enjoyed sports I’ve tried my hand at. I did basketball for a bit and then danced for 8 years (I did one year of competitions and realized that was not for me, god I was so lonely and played so much Pokémon in hotel rooms in the middle of nowhere). Later on I also dabbled in kendo and other forms of sword fighting (but not fencing. Longswords are much more fun).

3.       The Gris OST has gotten me through intense studying ever since I discovered it and it’s never failed to keep me focused on whatever I’m working on, I have no idea why but that soundtrack is beautiful and must be listened to in order. But also, if I’m not in the mood for it, I’ll also swap it out with the Sayonara Wild Hearts or the Persona 5 Royal OSTs for variation’s sake. If you see me smiling at music, it’s most likely video game soundtracks (this cover of the staff roll from Link’s Awakening) or the xiaohei OST (here)

4.       For a few years in college I played clarinet in a video game orchestra where we covered a bunch of my favorite tracks. The ensemble pieces were a blast to play (chamber music sucked though because I hate playing alone on my instrument) and my favorite would either be Simple and Clean because that counter melody slaps, or Ballad of the Goddess where the main violin solo was replaced with an erhu—okay that one was beautiful and I’m so pissed that the orchestra dissolved before we could perform it.

5.       One of my more embarrassing screw ups at work was full on yanking a connector off the logic board of a MacBook pro, right when my supervisor walked in with ice cream for me. Yes, I am a certified apple repair technician. Luckily I didn’t get in trouble because these things happen. And then a few days later I found out another technician accidentally yanked off a different part of the laptop that wasn’t supposed to come off. (I swear we’re good at our jobs now, that was our first semester on the job and told to try to do things by ourselves).

6.       Birds are my favorite animals, I find them extremely fascinating and love all their strange quirks and traits. I can’t name a favorite bird because I have multiple depending on the category (Although I do have a soft spot for the American Robin) but fun fact! There is a bird called the Ash-Breasted Tit Tyrant and I love that this name exists in the world.

7.       I’ve managed to keep a semi-consistent sleep schedule throughout college and have never pulled an all-nighter before (and hope I never will). The closest I’ve gotten was going to bed at 3am to finish a short story for a fantasy class and I was a complete wreck the next day. Unfortunately, my consistent sleep schedule and early waking hours make me the perfect candidate for opening shifts at whatever job I hold. In tech, it’s not as bad since a 7:30 start time is manageable but for coffee shop opens at 6:15 it sucks to wake up an hour beforehand.

8.       Even though I love and adore houseplants, I struggle with keeping new ones alive. In my apartment I have a dwarf umbrella plant, some sort of ivy, and a monstera. They’re all in varying phases of poor health but I’m trying. I also refuse to get succulents because I like leaf leaves. The longest plants I’ve had are two spider plants propagated from my 10th grade English teacher’s plant and those things are hard to kill. I also have a money tree that is getting waaaaaaay too big to keep lugging around from home to campus and back again.

9.       I’ve only written and uploaded one (1) fanfic in my life! While I enjoy reading fanfics, I’ve never been interested in writing them, mostly because I don’t have as much fun working with pre-existing characters over original ones. I like playing in my own sandbox! But something I’ll do from time to time is sticking my own original characters from their original worlds into a crossover with media I like and watching the interactions explode.

10.       Speaking of original works, I’m a writing major (linguistics minor and I could probably cram in a Chinese minor if that was actually a thing at this college)! I write a lot! My main project is Chinese inspired fantasy with fiber arts, familial betrayal, and messing with the red string of fate trope in an unabashed aroace way. Another one that I’m in the character creation and world building process mode of is a viet-inspired fantasy project that’s got timeframe-based magic and a kingdom hearts style existential crisis. Also magic school because why not.

23. Do you ever drive above the speed limit? Yes, but only where the speed limit is stupidly too low. Otherwise, I rarely drive above 100 km/h.

24. What terrifies you? The list is too long, it should probably be a separate post. I project my issues on the shows that I watch so every now and then you would see me analysing characters or incidents while projecting my issues.

34. Last book you read? I can’t even remember the last time I read a book. Probably mid last year?

39. Time you normally get up? Half past 6 if I have to go to the office. Otherwise, I’ll wake up for morning prayer and continue sleeping until half an hour before I have to clock in. On weekends, I continue sleeping until closer to 10 o’clock. If I stayed up the night, probably closer to noon.

40. Which do you prefer, sunrise or sunset? Sunset all the way, because it’s the beginning of my favourite time of the day. Yes, I’m a vampire who loves the night. I also love necks

41. How many blankets on your bed? One and only. It’s too hot to wear even a thin blanket but it gets cold around 3 am so I have to be prepared.

42. Describe your kitchen plates. I like the design of Portmeirion table set from the early 2000s.

1. Do you make your bed? kind of? I basically just straighten the pillows and pull the covers back up to the top of the bed. And usually all in a rush since I always be hittin that snooze button in the morning

2. What’s your favorite number? honestly I don't think I have one???

3. What’s your job? I'm a statistical analyst for a mechanical engineering research program at one the big universities here. Basically I model data and help the numbers make sense for engineers working on some really cutting edge stuff

4. If you could, would you go back to school? welp... I'm back at university right now working on my master's degree and it has NOT been easy doing that while continuing to work full-time. Still wishing I'd done this right after my bachelor's but you know what, I'm doing my best chugging away a course or 2 at a time while holding down my day job and somewhat maintaining my sanity... Stay in school, kids!!!

5. Can you parallel park? I’m a PRO at this! When you live/work/drive in a big city, you do or die lmao

6. A job you had which would surprise people? when I was in high school I spent a couple of summers detasseling corn. It was very hot and intensive manual labor and I remember my classmates (who were too posh for that kind of work) didn't think I would last a single day, but it was the best summer job I ever had and gave me mad respect for agricultural workers. I also met some really cool people, one of whom became a very good friend that I still keep in touch with today.

7. Do you think aliens are real? yep and they're probably staying the fuck away from us for a reason!!

8. Can you drive a manual car? yes tho my current car is automatic

9. What’s your guilty pleasure? a large double-double and canadian maple from timmies. Singing 80s and 90s pop songs (badly) at the top of my lungs in the shower. Popping bubble wrap... every. single. bubble.

Nicknames: lol, I mean, my fake internet name is basically a nickname, also “C”, all the broski, brosauce, etc variations me and my bestie use, speaking of, could also consider Elsa a nickname, or Cristina, because we are stone cold adults to refer to each other as our respective personality double in favourite duos (Elsa and Anna, and Meredith and Cristina) - yeah, we know we are fucking lame. My sister calls me “Titly”, which means butterfly, you may now also refer to me as Your Majesty, because I bought Elsa’s crown as a birthday gift for myself and gave myself a coronation, thereby legally making me Arendelle’s Queen. This is how it works now right? Declaring something online immediately makes it true.

Favourite sports team: I support the national teams ‘cause Go Canada Go or whatever. Also more invested in the Raptors than I ever thought I’d be, but hey, them winning the NBA last year gave me more serotonin than I ever thought boring sports could give me. It’s still so boring, but I do follow the scores when they appear on CP24 (local news channel), feels good when your city’s teams win. Guess that means by default I also support the Blue Jays and the Maple Leafs, but whatever.

Dream holiday: Russia and Japan are definitely my number ones, all the historical places like the Winter Palace and Himeji Castle, and the cities.

Dream car: Tesla, it was a blue Model S, but that was 5 years ago (4? 3? idk, a time ago) and I’m sure there are newer models now that I am too lazy look up

Instruments: I technically played the flute for a year (maybe three) in middle school music class, but it was mandated and I don’t remember. I could play the beginning of To Love’s End from Inuyasha back then, but not now. I can play the main tune, like just the first few notes, of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’s main theme on the piano, but I just memorized the keys. Idk the actual notes. F or G or E I guess? Idk. 

Languages: English, Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, technically French, but I didn’t really retain anything from it, like I can read French, but got little to no idea what I’m saying. Straight up surprised when I do understand. I think it’s in there, but barely. Also supposed to be able to speak Arabic, but retained less of that than French. 

Celebrity crushes: Chris Evans, Jenna Coleman, SRK (lol, since I was born probably), Kajol, Bruna Marquezine, Yuki Kimisawa, and loads of others. I’m a hoe for the fictional and the theoretical, what can I say?  

Random facts: Buying notebooks and using them are two entirely different hobbies, and, okay, this isn’t like interesting in the least but I am OBSESSING over the drama that went down between Salman Khan and Zayn over his cover of Allah Duhai Hai - yeah, I know I’m 2 years late to this, but whatever, no fucking told me about it and I can’t find any definitive information and I’m going crazy! Please, someone explain what happened 'cause I am dying!!! I need to know!! (also, salman fans don’t interact, vo kuni hai yaar, tu phagal hai kya?)

— tell me the first song that made you stan your current fave group and why did your faves attract you so much?

omg ok it was april 2014, and I was procrastinating on homework and scrolling through youtube. shinee’s lucifer mv was recommended for some reason, and I was intrigued, so I clicked on it. From there, it just spiraled out of control. I was blown away like there’s this one dance move where they all lined up and taemin does this hand motion so fluidly and I was like “this is it.” More shinee mvs were recommended after I clicked that one, so I kept going and watching all the other ones until I watched them all. Their music is just so different and unique, like even after all this time, I can’t find another kpop group who mimics the music style of shinee. and all their solos are absolutely god tier, too!!! they really are gonna be my first and last kpop group. shinee withstood through my stan eras for other groups. I don’t think I’ll ever stop being their fan.

I also found snsd through shinee because their mvs were recommended after I clicked lucifer too. the first one I saw is the iconic gee. taeyeon stood out to me in those mvs. her voice is so distinct, and I’ve been a fan of her ever since. She didn’t have a solo then, but I searched up all her drama osts, song features, everything because I loved her voice so much even back then. so yeah, taeyeon and shinee will forever be my faves, and I love them a lot 💓

— how are you today?

I’m doing really good! I’m enjoying my summer, and my day is pretty lax. I’ve been facetiming friends, watching chopped, making banh bao with my mom, and doing my daily cardio ✨

— what book has had the biggest impact on your life?

the princess knight by cornelia funke. my elementary school did this thing where your parents can buy a book to donate to the school library under your name for your birthday. this was the book my sister chose for me when I was in kindergarten. I loved that book; I borrowed it so many times and kept rereading it. It’s a children’s picture book about a princess who secretly learns how to joust. the king tries to give her hand in marriage to the knight who wins the competition, but she defeats them all and chooses to marry the gardener’s son who she loves 💕

— what is something you think everybody should have done once in their life?

Travel. There’s just something so wonderful about going to a new place, whether that’s halfway across the world or just the town a few states over. It’s a lovely feeling embarking on an adventure to a place unknown to you where you can meet new people, try new foods even if it’s just a random dish at a restaurant you’ve never been to, and make memories with strangers that no one back home ever has to know about. There’s just something intriguing about being able to go somewhere else and be someone else for an hour or a day or a week before you return back home.

— what story are you the most proud of and why?

on my previous blog, I wrote a fic called the universe of us, and it’s 21k+ wc. I poured my blood, sweat, and tears into that fic, and although I can’t read it now without cringing, I really am super proud of myself for pulling through and writing that. The concept of it was unique, in my opinion, and I would love to rewrite it someday! 💫

on this blog, I am most proud of the dumbing down of love. that fic is personal to me because it is literally comprised of my college experiences in written format and the characters embody my friends. I wrote that over the span of 3-4 nights, and that’s the fastest I’ve ever written a fic of that length. the words just flowed so easily for that fic, and the quesadilla scene was the first thing I wrote, and I’m quite proud of that scene!! 💓

— what has made you really happy recently?

I graduated uni!!!!! 💛💛

— what is the first thing you want to do after this whole pandemic is over and it’s safe to go out again?

I want to eat sushi LOL I haven’t had it in four months, and I’m craving it so badly.... I also want to go out with my friends again! I miss being able to see them everyday and our late night shenanigans ):

I’ve always enjoyed writing, and my teachers sent me to the young authors’ faire every year from kindergarten to 8th grade. You don’t really get to write creative stories in class when you’re older though, and I stumbled upon fanfiction, and here we are. It’s not something I want to do as my job though. Writing is simply a fun pastime and hobby for me!! If I was forced to write or profit off of it, then that’d take fun out of it ):

Asian Drama Watchlist & Review for Jan 2020

Wow, got through a lot of shows and films this month compared to my norm (probably due to my lack of a social life, but meh, that’s beside the point)!!!

So here are my thoughts and reviews for the shows I watched in January...  probably not going to be completely spoiler free

And yeah this got long, so putting my reviews below the break so it doesn’t take up the whole wall!!

Finished Watching this month:

1) Ashes of Love

Wowww, what a journey this show takes you on!!  It took me awhile to get through, as I often find with Fantasy CDramas, as I find it hard to binge too many eps at a time, but I was hooked from the start!  I love the actors, the characters, I loved the leads but fell in love with several side characters as well, the angst gave you all the feels, there were plenty of funny moments, and the love stories really made your heart flutter (I especially fell in love with the side love story, which is rare for me!).  Really loved this one!

2) TharnType the Series

Hands down one of my favorite BL couples!!  Their chemistry is out of this world.  Are there problematic parts of the show?  Yes, most definitely, especially near the beginning, but their connection and sweet moments are worth it, and honestly I just made up my own head cannon where those parts don’t exist haha!!  I LOVE this couple, they way they look at each other and all the touches, ugh it just does things to me!!  And their acting was fabulous, I fell in love with Mew (more than I already was) and Gulf as well!

4) Coffee & Vanilla

Skinship, Skinship, Skinship!!  From ep 1, I was like woah!  So I started this one because I saw the 2 leads in Good Morning Call and think Dori Sakurada is just a beautiful human being and had SLS big time, so was curious to see him get the girl this time!!  And yeah he didn’t disappoint, he’s gorgeous and whoooo did that boy have some kinks!  Honestly, I thought their chemistry was good and I thoroughly enjoyed all the skinship scenes, if anything I would have been happy to see more of his kinky side actually get reciprocated haha!!  I personally enjoy a clingy, head-over-heels in love ML, and am for the alpha-male/innocent girl dynamic, and that’s exactly what you get!!!

I can see why this show wouldn’t be for everyone though, it has problematic parts for sure! It has a really weak FL who doesn’t really have a lot of character growth (despite her saying at the end she got stronger, I was like really??  fooled me!  but at least she’s aware of her weakness??), but her “innocent” character is one of the things that drives the story so it didn’t bother me that much.  I could have done without so much manhandling (by pretty much every male in the series).  I could see how it could be triggering for some.  I also thought she had the worst best friend in the world and was way too forgiving.  But if you can get over these points, I enjoyed it quite a lot! I may make some gifs for this one since there are several scenes I liked and no one seems to be making any!!

3) He is Psychometric

So this was different than I expected.  Not bad by any means, just different.  I was expecting more romance, more healing from shared trauma, etc.  Maybe I was hoping it would be a bit more like Just Between Lovers after seeing that first ep and the trauma?  But I know nothing will ever replace that show in my heart, it will always be a fave!  Anyways, this wasn’t like that one haha!  It was a lot more mystery/crime genre than anything, which isn’t my fave, but there were a few sweet moments and the acting was sooo good and by the time I realized the romance & story wasn’t really what I was expecting I was drawn into the mystery I had to know how it ended!

5) Theory of Love

I love OffGun as celebrities and in their variety shows, but never saw them in a series so decided to give this one a go!  Wow, I totally ended up in a major binge session with this one!! I didn’t want to stop watching!  I’ve always thought Gun was a cutie, but after seeing him act I have a whole new respect for him.  Did I think it was one of the best BL stories I’ve seen?  No.  But they have great chemistry and it was a cute story overall!  Really enjoyed this one!!

6) Dark Blue Kiss

I’ve seen the various Kiss prequels so was excited about this one!  Honestly, I felt the MorkSun story overpowered PeteKao a bit but am not complaining as I loved both stories!  There were a lot of sweet moments and just enough angst to keep you interested.  But above all, I have to say the superstars of the series were the parents!!  The acceptance every person should get, open talks about sex and condoms, advocating for your child, I mean it really doesn’t get much better!  It hit on many important lgbtq topics and for that alone I thought it was very well-done!  All the couples were very cute and made me root for them!

7) Love by Chance (rewatch)

In prep for the 2nd season I decided to rewatch LBC in a binge session!  Oh my goodness, I forgot how much I missed AePete, I fell in love with them big time the first time around and all of that just came rushing back.  I’m reeeally going to miss Pete in season 2!!!  Their relationship is just so healthy compared to most in the BL world and their chemistry is sooo good!!  They better at least let them stay happy and in love even if Pete is abroad!!  I admit I was never one to get crazy about TinCan, but knowing they’ll be the center of season 2 I watched their scenes more closely and definitely felt a stronger pull for them this time around.  I’m very excited to see how their story continues!!!!

8) The Hows of Us

This filipino film stars one of my fave love teams... KathNeil!!  I love their films and that they are a reel to real couple as well!!  I enjoyed this movie a lot, it was more mature than many of their previous works together and showed how they’ve been growing.  It wasn’t a typical falling in love story that ends when the couple gets together but explores how couples grow apart and how real life can sometimes get in the way of our dreams.  I found the film relatable and also optimistic.  And I love the pining and longing looks... that always gets me and there was a lot of it in this film!!

9) Hotel Del Luna

This is what kdramas are all about - Superb acting, gorgeous cinematography, interesting characters, beautiful OST, the whole production was incredible!  It wasn’t my favorite story ever and it took me several months to finish but it kept puliing my back in and I finally got through it.  I really was mesmerized each ep by how beautiful the whole thing was.  I liked the back story and all the fun side characters. And I swear it was worth watching just for IU’s costumes, hair, and different styles alone!!  I didn’t love the ending, that was my biggest complaint, I guess you could call it “open?”  I just think it could have wrapped up better, but overall it was a beautiful series!

10) Itsuka, Nemuri Ni Tsuku Hi (Someday When I Fall Asleep)

Wow what a trippy series.  It was short enough to binge in one afternoon and it looked interesting, so that’s exactly what I did.  It was intriguing from the start and there was a mystery about it that kept my interest, it was a bit creepy at times, and had some twists I totally was NOT expecting at all.  Overall it was one of those that made me think and ponder for awhile after, but it did make me a bit sad too, so only watch if you’re willing to experience some feels, but it was a good one and I’m glad I stumbled upon it!

If you could, would you go back to school? I still take graduate courses in education here and there for my professional development, but if I had endless amounts of free time I'd absolutely love to go to art school. 5. Like, my first ever “real” (on the books) job was slinging ice cream scoops. 1. do you make your bed? no, and it makes my parents grunt in disapproval every time I sleep in my family house XD I make my bed when I have guests though.

3. what’s your job? currently I have a full time job as a junior financial specialist (at least that’s what I’ve been told lol) in one of those big, international companies; in the meantime, I’m trying to finish my PhD biology studies.

4. if you could, would you go back to school? hmm, which school? Primary education – not really. But I was a really happy person in high school, my stress level was really low back then and I miss that. I would gladly go back for few weeks.

5. can you parallel park? I used to when I was making my driving license (like 12 years ago o_O) but I haven’t been driving a car since I’ve moved to Krakow so...

6. a job you had which would surprise people? One month of pretending to be an outgoing extrovert, asking students to sign for a health care plan. Me, who starts sweating when I have to order food over phone. What the f*ck was I thinking?

I’m an in-training emergency medicine doctor. Life is so hectic right now and for another 3 yrs.

No! I mean if I have the time, I might be up for a short course on something not-medicine-related. Art, language, music etc.

I can if you mean 60% success and wider than usual distance from the car and the pavement. Also it’s got to be my good old car I’m accustomed to.

6. A job you had that would surprise people? I was a squire for medieval shows and i also did a bit of falconry (it was at the same place). People are surprised because of the "cool" side of it i think.

Sometimes! I rarely have time in the mornings... if I’m cleaning my room or my apartment in general, though, I will!

2. What’s your favorite number?

Seven!

3. What’s your job?

I’m a graduate student who’s officially transitioned into full-time research (as opposed to research and classes, which I was doing for the last 2.5 years).

4. If you could, would you go back to school?

NO. 

If you knew how many years I’ve been in school, and how many I’ve got left, you too would understand my pain. I just wanna do science and not take classes where they grade me for things. Is that too much to ask?

5. Can you parallel park?

Can I? Yes.

6. A job you had which would surprise people?

In undergrad, I did cadaver research in research lab studying how external forces can injure a person and what the human body can withstand before injury occurs in the context of car safety and seat belts/airbags/other protective devices.

Nope. There are certain things I won’t do - such as bungee jumping, petting poisonous reptiles, etc. But I’m choosing to call that common sense.

High school marching band, and anyone who says it’s not a sport has clearly never been in marching band.

Frequently!

Which don’t I? I’ll always hit up the first How to Train Your Dragon, I love Lord of the Rings, the original Star Wars trilogy hits a lot of nostalgia buttons for me. There’s a long list!

Yeah, but I don’t do them often.

I like specific film and videogame OSTs. When I listen to or stream music online, though, it’s typically modern or alternative rock.

Tea! But only because coffee is super acidic and messes with my stomach.

4. If you could, would you go back to school? I am currently still in school, so that’s a bit of a moot question. It is actually quite fun though. If you mean public school, I certainly have fantasized about doing it over

6. A job you had which would surprise people? Powerwashing pavement, specifically spending 2 weeks powerwashing this one community college’s parking lot, after which I had a surgery (not because of the powerwashing)

9. What’s your guilty pleasure? Buying snacks like rootbear and oreos, as well as browsing pixiv for inordinate amounts of time

Things people do that drive you crazy? Had I not a rational head on my shoulders, I would have already crushed several people’s noses shut because they apparently are too reluctant to keep their noses clean and instead opt to sniff every 5 seconds because that’s easier somehow. I don’t wear headphones to class just because I like to listen to music, I am also trying to keep myself from commiting murder

13. Any Phobias? I think dismemberment is always one of my greatest fears. Also I remember being terrified of dogs as a kid. The fear somewhat reawakened when I got bit by dogs on 2 seperate occasions.

14. Favorite childhood sport? Not really, I did soccer as a kid and I hated it.

15. Do you talk to yourself? Yes, that’s the best part about being home alone

16. What movie do you adore? I don’t actually watch very many movies, but I do have fond memories of the LoTR movies.

17. Do you like doing puzzles? Very much so. They are quite fun to solve, and fun to make.

18. Favorite kind of music? If it slaps it slaps, but to try to narrow it down, it usually is some kind of OST or a Touhou doujin arrangement. I also enjoy mainstream music, but I’ve been slow to seek it out, so I only have a couple of songs I’ve added to my horde that normies would recognize. I also happen to have a fondness for meme songs like the Rick Roll or Grandayy’s We are Number One remixes, so I have psy weapons that I can safely deploy with no hazard to myself.

Magical Rabbits and Radical Meetings: A Mansion Market with a Difference

My daughter, now aged 3, is slowly learning to sleep through the night. Her mother (me), now aged 45, has yet to learn this skill. Last night was particularly hopeless. I had just come back from facilitating an Open Space meeting at my son’s Steiner school. I lay awake, whilst my children slept through, with all the things that happened, and all the things that could have happened, and the things I might have said, thrumming through me. I went on Woman’s Hour last summer, and similarly came off air brim full of all the things I hadn’t managed to say to 3.5 million listeners. I dealt with that by writing a blog (you can read it here) so I am going to do the same now – you never know, it might help me sleep through the night later. Here goes….

           For me, one of the real stars of the meeting last night was a seven year old girl. She was the single representative, in a room of over sixty adults, of the people for whom the whole enterprise is organised, the people at the centre of everything: our children. Earlier that day, at pick-up time, her mother had asked me, with some anxiety, whether it would be okay for her to bring her daughter to the meeting. The mother really wanted to come but her husband was away so it was the only way she would be able to make it. She was worried people might disapprove. I said she should come. I said her daughter could sit in a cosy corner – it would be fine. The meeting had been advertised as being open to pre-school aged children but not older ones. There was a fear that the children would be at best a distraction and at worst would overhear discussions that it would be inappropriate for them to take on board. However, to the surprise of the mother and the 7 year old girl herself, she did not ‘sit in a cosy corner’ but stayed the entire 3 hours of the meeting and participated fully, even calling her own session: ‘I want some animals in this school, like rabbits or guinea pigs’ – it was a great session. Lots of people came. The girl will submit notes and pictures from the meeting which will form part of a big report we will be co-creating as a result of Opening Space at the school. People worry that actions – tangible outcomes - don’t emerge out of such meetings. I reckon a rabbit or a guinea pig would be a wonderfully tangible outcome – a warm, soft, cuddly one and at the same time an irrefutably hard fact. Today I am feeling exhausted but optimistic: real change is possible - I look forward to stroking the school’s new pet rabbit.

           In the closing circle, another participant, equally touched and impressed by the 7 year old girl’s contribution to the evening, said she thought it would be wonderful to welcome the children to more Open Space meetings, to engage them and gather in their many thoughts and ideas on how to make their school the best that it can be – it’s there for them after all. One of the things I wish I had said last night, one of the things that kept me awake, is in reply to this. Open Space Technology (OST), to give it its full rather grand sounding name, has already been used, to great effect, with school children. One of the brilliant things about running an OST meeting for children is that they get it – they understand the form more easily and more quickly than most adults. The one law on which Open Space runs is the ‘Law of Two Feet’ or ‘Law of Mobility’ which states, “Don’t stay where you don’t want to be. Follow yourself, go where you wish, where you will have the best time, only you know where this is.” Children are experts in using this law – it’s innate to them. Why on earth would you do anything else? Unfortunately most adults think not-following-yourself is a compulsory component of life. They have been trained- probably in large part through their own school experience – to believe that most of the time you have to stay stuck in meetings, work places, activities that are not where you want to be at all. It is why I find it particularly thrilling to think of an Open Space meeting that includes children – because they can teach us how to do it. I remember hearing a story about a day long OST meeting held in one school in the States for over 1000 children, aged 6 to 16. In one corner of the huge room in which the meeting was held were children discussing how to handle bullying and disputes, in another were others sharing different skipping techniques, in another an intense conversation about marbles, in another one an exchange  about under confidence and how to get over it.

So, I didn’t say it last night, but yes, we could invite and include the children. We really could. Which brings me on to my bigger vision that kept me awake through the early hours. Opening Space is a practice. We need to do it again. And again. And again. And then, as if by magic, wonderful things start to happen – rabbits appear, for example. Our overall theme and title for last night’s meeting was this: “Our Chance to Help Change the Story of the School.” Through the sessions people called they were beginning to name how they would like to see the story unfold from here. I would like to share with you one vision I have, one version of the story I would love to see emerge, in which Open Space could become part of the fabric of the school’s life.

OST came about because 30 years ago a man called Harrison Owen spent a year organising a big conference – panels, talks etc – and afterwards everyone said, “That was great, but the really good part, the part where the juicy, creative stuff happened, was in the coffee break” –in other words in the part that he had done nothing to organise, except to provide the coffee. Harrison wanted to find a way to have a meeting that had the energy of a good coffee break: Open Space was born. In this format the agenda wall – which is blank at the start of the meeting – is often referred to as ‘the village market place.’ It makes me think of the ‘Mansion Markets’ which are held once a month at my son’s school. There are lots of stalls. There is cake. Children and adults alike can have a good time and come away with wonderful goods. Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could hold full school meetings with the atmosphere of a great marketplace? If instead of people complaining, “I don’t want to go to yet another meeting. I don’t want the school and its business to take up precious hours of my evening or weekend. I give enough time/ money/ energy already! etc etc.” What if people went to the meetings because it was a joyful way to choose to spend some of their time off, with their whole family? What if people came away richer not poorer, energised not drained? What if people went because it was fun, the place to be – a funky centre of creativity to hang out on a Saturday, a place to get the things done you keep wanting to do but not managing? Everything from the felting for the next Advent Fair, to a key conversation about teacher welfare, to a chance to practice doing handstands on the grass, to a fund-raising group for re-opening the school pool (a personal mission of mine). It may sound outlandish, utopian, far-fetched but it’s good to dream, essential even, and also, sometimes, things happen…. So that’s how I’d like the story to go from here. That’s the magic rabbit I’d like to come out of the hat of these meetings.

And guess what? We could make it happen this Saturday?! Because that’s the other thing that I wish I’d said last night and that subsequently kept me awake: I forgot to tell people that we are doing it again – we are Opening Space in two days time!!! On Saturday 15thJune from 10am to 1pm. If you came before, come again – it will be totally different, new people, a new day, a new agenda co-created. If you missed last night, and you are a part of the school community, in whatever role, come to this one. Teachers, maintenance staff, parents, trustees, caterers – all are welcome. Come to the mansion. Come to a mansion marketplace with a difference - no money will change hands but many ideas might. And there could be cake. Biscuits for certain. Come for an hour, come for all three. And, if you wish, bring your children. I will be bringing mine. I will also bring toys but they might not need them, because guess what? The meeting might be fun. Rabbits might appear at school. I might sleep tonight. Surprising things can happen and to hope for them is vital.
