There is a special spot reserved in my heart for Magnificent Frigatebirds. These fuckos are so regal, and they are also ENORMOUS, with a wingspan of up to 8 FEET.
The first time I saw one in person, my brain did a 10-second-reboot because oh neat a pterodactyl just flew overhead--waitwhatnow?
Tumblr media
Again, these aerial monstrosities have a wingspan significantly longer than adult humans, and in the wild you'll most often encounter them circling high in the air above an ocean coast.
Tumblr media
Which is why it was endlessly hilarious to me when I found out what the males look like close up.
My good bitch, I bruised at least three ribs laughing.

expanding on the konig ask // it turned a bit nsfw sorry
könig would mistake your simple kindness as a crush.
he'd been slightly startled when you gently rapped on his office door to ask him if he wanted a cup of warm caffeine before breakfast since you're already getting one for yourself. (he hasn't a clue that horangi had practically begged for one too.)
then was the one time you'd offered to stitch the tear in his hood. he'd sputtered, completely taken aback by how brazen you'd been. "nein." he'd stiffly walked away apple-cheeked; hands balled into fists in his pockets. (no one knows how to sew for shit, you're the team medic of both bodies and clothing.)
then you bring him an apple pastry. the pencil (könig, please. we are in 2k24 use a pen) snaps in his hand when you choke out, "apfel strudel". his mother tongue rolling off of yours is truly too much and when you leave, he fists himself under his desk with the butchered words echoing inside his head. shame roils in his gut after— post-nut clarity hitting like nothing else— and with a snarl, he wipes the thick cum off of his hand on his pants while using the other to eat the treat that you so kindly baked for him. (the pastry was cold and made of tart green apples which he's hated since he was a lad.)
and now, with your head resting on his padded shoulder, dozing off. his tongue is tied in a knot and there's a lump in his throat because no one's ever really dared to be so forward with him. not only is he a walking pussy deterrent— what with his height and creepy, blank stare— but he's also a colonel; your superior. he can only have him under you in one way and that's under his command. so he makes his choice. once the helo lands back at base, könig taps the side of your helmet with his finger and mutedly asks you to meet him in his office.
"i am flattered, ja? but you must cease this behavior."
"sir?"
he clenches his jaw, crooked teeth gnashing together in determination. he won't let your pretty, round face deter him from his duty to his country, the team, nor you. it simply wouldn't be fair. he's your leader so it's up to him to put a stop to this. könig refuses to acknowledge the look of disappointment on your face. (delusional. you look confused because you literally have no idea what he's talking about.)
"the food—"
"you didn't like it? the apfel strudel?" he chokes on his spit when you say it and turns around to pound at his chest. he doesn't hear how you had told fender to not order that dessert. 'just because it's austrian doesn't mean the colonel will like it.'
he's fortunate to have such a tall backrest on his office chair because his cock is already at half-mast and your dulcet voice reverberating off the plain walls of his small office is doing him no favors. könig stands directly behind it and dismisses you with a wave of his hand and a hoarse command.
how tantalizing you are, so bold to be showcasing your talent in home economics just like a frigatebird puffing its chest out to attract a mate. his grip on the chair tightens, the leather protesting with a soft creak.
it's just a crush. time will erode these frail sentiments you've come to have for him (for him! an old, ugly man whose virginity has practically grown back since the last time he slept with someone was a paid sex worker years ago) and so he'll just ignore them.
(he doesn't. he fucks his pillow every night— jaw trembling and saliva pooling— thinking it's you taking him instead and confuses your s/o as a relative.)

can you talk a bit about what you do as conservation work? i’ve seen a couple of your posts float around (the seasonal worker comic and the one about the remote island) and have looked into conservation stuff a bit myself and it all looks super cool!! i was just looking for a bit of a more personable take that what job sites describe
Of course! :) A lot of the work I've done has been in either trail maintenance, habitat restoration, or biological fieldwork, with a little bit of outdoor recreation stuff mixed in. Pretty much all of those things (barring the outdoor rec) have been in partnership with or working directly for government agencies (DNR, USFS, BLM, NPS, USFWS, etc.)
Trail work is very trades oriented - you are using tools (generally handtools - especially if you are working in designated wilderness, which prohibits any kind of mechanization) and your body to build effective infrastructure that will last a good, long time. Project work covers a huge range - brushing trail, digging tread, building structures, fence repair, rock work/wall building, etc. Often you have to work with natural materials on the project site, because hauling in lumber or stone is not feasible. It's hands-on & technical work, and it needs a lot of creativity! Your end goal is that no one knows you were there at all, because your work blends seamlessly into the landscape. A lot of people who hike or mountain bike don't realize how much effort and complexity it takes to maintain a trail! It's a very secret service, & I think there's something really beautiful in that. It's dirty, hard work, and you'll very likely go long periods without access to service or utilities (lots of treating/filtering your own water, camp-cooking your meals, showering in the creek, and sleeping on the ground).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The habitat restoration I've done has generally involved the removal of invasive plants & the planting/seeding of natives. This is also pretty intense physical work! You might have to get certified/trained in working with herbicides, which are sometimes a necessary tool in fighting invasive plants. Hack-splash or drill-fill are the most commonly used herbicide techniques in restoration, because broadcast dispersion is considered a last resort. That involves individually treating each invasive plant with herbicide, using minimal amounts and concentrations to limit the effect on the surrounding ecosystem. The two biggest restoration projects I've worked on are the re-planting of disturbed alpine meadows (50K plants in about six weeks) and the removal of invasive coconut monocultures from native rainforest (hacking down palms with a machete, and spraying/injecting the cut stump with a small amount of herbicide to prevent it from coming back).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My biological fieldwork has been mostly marine-oriented - I've done a lot of work with seabirds, as well as coral reef survey & tagging sharks, mantas, tuna, and dolphins. My seabird work involved monitoring nesting colonies (counting babies, tracking growth) with some tagging, banding, and sample collection as well. The seabirds I worked most with were several different booby species, Greater Frigatebirds, Red & White-tailed Tropicbirds, noddies (both black and brown), & terns (white & sooty). Most of the marine tagging I did was using handline fishing techniques, and required me to have a lot familiarity with/certifications for boat operation & seamanship. Biological fieldwork has definitely been lower labor-intensive than trail work or restoration, but still requires a lot of hiking & hauling gear around remote (& sometimes treacherous) terrain! You will also have really intimate exposure to animal bodies and death, and will probably (definitely) get pooped on/thrown up on/bled on at some point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A big common theme throughout these kinds of jobs is the ability to work in small groups, in isolated places, for long periods at a time. I hope this was the kind of information you were looking for in terms of what the actual work is! Feel free to reach out/message me if this didn't actually answer your questions <3

Any thoughts on the Wattrel line?
Tumblr media
The Wattrel line is kind of a classic early route bird two-stager, except it's not early route. Still, it is a pretty straightforward bird based off of a real animal with an element twist—in this case, Wattrel is probably a storm-petrel, most evident in the beak shape.
Tumblr media
While most of the interesting parts of this line come from Kilowattrel, Wattrel's not bad. It's visually distinct from its successor and has a super simple design, with high-contrast blacks and yellows conveying most of the electric typing.
My one issue with Wattrel is its eyes. I don't know if this is just a me thing, but the eyes are so big that I can't unsee them as being like googly eyes that someone slapped on top of a normal bird face. Maybe if they were a bit smaller or the pupil was bigger or something, but whatever it has going on here is a bit distracting.
Also, I'm not a huge fan of the gray, which mostly serves to muddy the palette. I feel like the underside could've just been all black, but if you really wanted a different color there, white would've been more neutral and complimented the eyes more. Everything else, however, is fine—nothing crazy but nice enough looking.
Tumblr media
Kilowattrel's where this line really gets good. It's based off of a frigatebird, also known as this ridiculous thing:
Tumblr media
Not only is that a fun choice for a base because it's inherently an interesting bird, but it also puts a decent twist on it. The yellow palette is a sharp contrast to a real frigatebird's red (side note: kind of sad the shiny isn't red), while the various zig-zags along its gular sac and wings help convey the idea of lightning. Said throat sac also lights up and glows, similar to a light bulb. Very fun, and puts a nice twist to what would otherwise be a plain design.
Tumblr media
My one complaint about Kilowattrel is that it has this random dark blue-ish gray patch on its lower body and it's like... why? You can barely see it, and it adds absolutely nothing to the design; pure black would've looked so much better.
Also, I kind of wish the throat sac was bigger. You can see on the actual frigatebird up there that those things are absolutely silly looking; Kilowattrel's is almost too subtle by comparison, especially considering said throat sac is the most interesting part of the design. Those are nitpicks, however, and overall I really enjoy this design.
Tumblr media
Overall, some very simple but very effective birds.

Hey so can i have some interesting bird facts? I'm writing a story with a character who loves birds and i would like to hear bird facts that i can make the character tell others
YOU ARE MY NEW FAVORITE PERSON THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ASKING.
here are some of my favorites off the top of my head!!
- crows can remember faces and hold grudges! not only that, but they can also spread gossip amongst other crows which can be passed down generationally. if you wrong a crow, there’s a chance even its descendants will despise you
- hoatzins are born with small hooked claws on their wings to grab onto branches when they’re chicks! chicks will hold onto branches and, when faced with danger, they can and will drop themselves into water and SWIM to safety!! cool, right? however, as hoatzins mature they shed their claws and lose their ability to swim- as they have no need for those things anymore
- woodpeckers have long tongues that are supported by the ‘hyoid bone’, two thin strips that run through their tongue and wrap all the way around their skull. basically, woodpeckers have long ass tongues that touch their own skull. they also have been prone to using their tongues as self defense; their tongues are long and sticky so they stick it out at other birds to freak them out lmao
- bearded vultures have the strongest stomach acid of any animal in the world. around 90% of their diet consists of pure bone that they swallow and digest whole. on top of that, despite being born snow-white in color, bearded vultures in the wild are often seen with shades of red and orange painted onto their feathers. for purposes ornithologists have yet to understand, these vultures cover themselves in red dirt and other substances to make their feathers a more desirable color. the theory is that they use this to prevent feather degradation, but I like to think they just enjoy being fancy..
- frigatebirds are a huge subject of interest for scientists because nobody knows exactly how they manage to sleep while flying so much. these birds fly for extended periods of time over large bodies of water, and despite never coming in for a landing- they usually end up being fine. the hypothesis is that they actually take 10 second or so long power-naps while mid-flight, only resting part of their brain so that they can still operate their eyes and wings. neat, right?
- oilbirds, who get their name from the fact that historically people have been known to cook them as chicks for their oil, can echolocate like bats!! this fruit-eating little guy is also the only bird in its family, steatornis, which.. literally just translates to ‘fat bird.’ this is because, as chicks, oilbirds are born and raised to be significantly fatter than their parents. oh also, sometimes they scream so loudly and tragically that they’ve earned the nickname ‘guácharo’, roughly meaning “one who laments.”
- the closest living relative to the dodo is the nicobar pigeon! In fact, dodos are even considered a subset (raphinae) within the pigeon/dove family- columbidae. so… in short, dodos were basically big flightless pigeons. the more you know!
- kiwi eggs take up around 15% of their entire body weight, and are actually considered to be the largest eggs in relation to body weight of any other bird…. despite the fact that kiwis are super small. kiwis are also very reproductive, so females tend to lay a lot of eggs in their lifetime.. like.. close to 100. long story short: ouch.
- birds have knees and ankles and they bend pretty much just like ours!
roping back to corvids.. sorry they’re my favorite hehe
- jackdaws and rooks have been known to not only mate for life, but also choose their partners before they even reach sexual maturity. when eventually reaching maturity, as well, they stay by their partner’s side even if faced with continuous reproductive failure. they’ve also been observed keeping familial bonds and forming friendships!! very social and sweet members of the corvidae family
- the common raven has around 79 different vocalizations and scientists don’t even really understand half of them.
- crows have ACCENTS!!! ok so.. not in the way you’re probably thinking, but it’s the closest a bird can Get to an accent!! and it’s pretty damn cool!! depending on where they live, crows will have vocalizations catered specifically to their area’s murder. the vocalizations remain the same, but have a sliiiightly different tone to them. accents!!!!
- crows understand the concept of zero. this may not seem super revolutionary, but considering the fact it took our overall society to figure it out.. that’s pretty damn cool. (obviously societies preceding us like the mayans had an understanding of zero far before the rest of us did, but it’s still pretty neat!!)
SO YEAH!! THERE ARE YOUR BIRD FACTS!!!!! I never get to talk about this so sorry there’s so much— I got excited haha
I have a lot more but I condensed them to this little list of the ones I find the most interesting! hope this helps!!!!

i’ve been avoiding any scvi spoilers as much as i can, so i was lucky enough to not have had wattrel and kilowattrel spoiled for me. i still haven’t seen every new pokemon yet so i’m not venturing into the badlands (tumblr tags) but i still want to talk about these guys!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
first off, very interesting choices of species to base them off of! most bird pokemon reference common and familiar birds, like a crow or a duck (/pos btw, this is not a bad thing) but i love that newer gen bird pokemon are including lesser-known species, like hawaiian honeycreepers and cormorants.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(baile style oricorio & ʻiʻiwi)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(cramorant & double-crested cormorant)
so wattrel is based on a storm petrel. there are quite a few different species, but i’d say the most direct reference is the leach’s storm petrel because of the forked tail and the general range of their habitat (although i don’t think that really matters much)
Tumblr media
we’ve needed more flying/electric types for sure and this is a very silly fun little guy, exactly what i love in a first-stage, early-route bird pokemon. cute design with neat colors!!
👇
Tumblr media
they also incorporated petrel flight behavior into its animation which i’m a huge fan of! i can’t find any good videos or gifs showing their battle animations (and i also want to avoid searching for them) but they soar for a bit and then flap frantically like how petrels do to navigate through choppy water.
and kilowattrel is absolutely striking, pun intended. i’m extremely happy with this evolution
Tumblr media
i never expected they’d make a frigatebird pokemon! frigatebirds are massive seabirds that have the largest wing:body ratio of any bird. they can have a wingspan of almost 8 feet! they can also ride air currents for days, weeks, even literal months without landing once. it’s insane to me
Tumblr media
kilowattrel’s coloration is based on the female magnificent frigatebird. they have a beautifully angular shape and i think kilowattrel’s design captures that very well with the perfect amount of roundness
Tumblr media Tumblr media
frigatebirds don’t typically show up near spain or portugal (where paldea is based off of) (so my attempt at guessing the storm petrel species didn’t really matter anyway lmao)
the few things that are weird to me about their designs are the eyes and yellow markings on the throat that go up their head. unfortunately, the eyes of every character in scvi (and pokemon legends as well) have issues with adapting to lighting and shadows. i think if this was addressed it’d look a lot better because they’re just way too bright sometimes. also the way the yellow comes up above the eyes should either be exaggerated or erased. i think it’s so subtle that it’s just unnecessary. but this is literally me searching for things to complain about if i absolutely had to say something bothered me about their designs. otherwise i think they’re fantastic, and as pretty mediocre as gen 9 is, i’m very happy we got these guys out of it

It's been a long time since I've done Pokémon Gijinkas. I think I started burning out from it after later down the line. I decided to make gijinkas for my all-bird team in Pokémon Violet, previously seen here.
Howard the Quaquaval: The fun thing about humanoid starters is that they're easy to humanize, but the downside is that it also leads to a lot of the designs for said humanizations looking kind of uniform. Hopefully mine stands out a bit more. I did give him top surgery scars, so that's something I guess.
Carmen the Flamigo: Flamigo is a lot harder to humanize, just because it kind of removes the traits that make it so charming (namely, the doofy look on its face). I decided to make her a kickboxer, to emphasize her Fighting-type.
Ogden the Espathra: I wanted Ogden to be Romani, since Espathra appears to be based on a Roma fortune teller. The main issue with that was that he's a male Espathra, and based on my research, traditional male clothing for the Roma don't tend to be as frilly as those of Roma women, and the frills are kind of an important aspect of the Flittle line's identity. I thought about just putting him in a dress (because it's current year, guys can wear dresses if they want) but it still didn't look right. I ended up compromising by sort of blending male and female attire into one, and I also gave him a scarf to represent his long neck. Also, he's a twink XD
BabyBoomer the Titan Bombirdier: The first thing I knew I wanted to do with her was make her look evil (or at least sinister). My main vision for her was either a badass housewife who rules her home with an iron fist or a nurse who you're pretty sure is secretly killing all of her patients. I think I succeeded on at least one of those things.
Storm the Kilowattrel: I immediately knew I wanted her to be a pirate. Frigatebirds, the birds Kilowattrel is based on, are often known as "pirate birds" because of their tendency to plunder food and nesting material from other birds mid-flight. Her wings became her coat, her tail became her bandana and her sword is supposed to partially invoke her beak.
King the Squawkabilly: Finally, we have King. He, like Howard, was easy to make a gijinka of because Squawkabilly wears its inspiration on its sleeve; I made him a 1950s greaser-lookin' guy, with the long jacket, the pompadour, etc. Pretty easy.
Hope you guys liked! Maybe I'll do some for Miraidon, Iron Bundle and Fezandipiti too!

Hunter here from YouTube, was just checking out your Tumblr and had a random idea. You've already made a Worm-Cy so what would a Bird-Cy be like? Not exactly sure what kind of bird, maybe a completely calm blue jay or something. For some reason, I also imagine Sgt. Eros being a frigatebird, for the giant somewhat heart shaped puffed out chest, and Meryl being a minorly panicking loud parrot of some kind. Maybe the scenario could be "someone with the epithet Avian just transformed them mid chase and they are currently very confused" or something. Hope you like the idea. You are totally free to alter the scenario or birds however you wish if you want.

Hunter, I'm so sorry I butchered it /lh
Percy is a "Little Eagle" and Meryl is an European Robin!

Why do frigatebirds lack wing slots?
Tumblr media
Unlike other seabirds like albatrosses, which use dynamic soaring, frigatebirds are thermal soarers, riding on air collumns that form above the sea. Thermal soaring is, however, more often associated with continental flyers like storks, large raptors, ravens and cranes, which makes sense as continental settings tend to produce collumns of hot air.
These flyers also have a thing frigatebirds lack: wing slots.
Tumblr media
Wings of the American Black Vulture Coragyps atratus.
The only other marine soarers with wing slots I know off are pelicans, and these tend to just as easily soar in continental settings. So what gives?
I don’t think an actual study has been conducted as to why frigatebirds lack these slots otherwise fundamental for thermal soarers. Closest I’ve found was Liu et all 2021, and that doesn’t explore the aerodynamics of frigatebird wings (even lumping them with dynamic soarers, which is flat out wrong).
My best guess is that, unlike most thermal soarers, frigatebirds are rather acrobatic. They routinely chase after other birds in flight and pursue flying fish; this might mean that a sharper wing shape is more desirable, much as in falcons, skuas and other aerial predators. The sheer size of frigatebird wings – some of the proportionally largest among living birds – might compensate for this, and as you can see in the above picture they do angle them forward, likely further macking up for the lack of slots.
What does this means for pelagornithids?
Tumblr media
Pelagornis sandersi silhouette by corvarts. Note wing slots.
Another lineage of sea birds, the massive pelagornithids, were also thermal soarers. Unlike frigatebirds, however, I doubt these were acrobatic flyers, seeing as they were much larger. Thus, I think wing slots might be more appropriate in future depictions of these birds.

Have some more ideas for Dragon! Edda AU, Modern Day Crack fic and maybe a Winged AU too?
Dragon! Edda may not be able to use her weapons... BUT! She can use lightning and ice magic, and it's a lot stronger now (Theoretically, she can just smack foes with her wings, but that's a bit risky)
In Dragon! Edda AU, she probably scared the everloving daylights out of Angel when they first saw her.
Also I think it would be cute if Edda is still very scared of water, so Aven just awkwardly waits for Edda to try to jump/ glide across a large body of water.
Regarding Modern Day Crack Fic (Need a better name for it), imagine if the very first thing Photographer was greeted with when both Edda and Aven wakes up was... Edda staring at them with sword in hand and Aven restraining her-
Also imagine the duo seeing the beach for the first time... Edda's reaction would be... interesting, to say the least.
The mental image of Edda being VERY CONFUSED with the concept of clothing would be kind of funny... also shoes.
Aven may or may not be very confused as to why those fluffy white things in the sky exist... also that weirdly bright light during the day and that white orb during the night .(Clouds, Sun and Moon respectively)
Imagine if the Photographer has to bring people by their house for an event or something... and have to put Edda and Aven in a random room to prevent anyone from freaking out-
Plus imagine if the Photographer have a pet... Edda and Aven would be very confused at the concept.
Also for Potential Wing AU, I think Edda would have albatross wings, while Aven would have Frigatebird wings (Or I can use Sooty albatross or Black-Footed Albatross)
Also I might start the Worldless Crack fic today.
Dragon!Edda's tail is also really long, she could possibly use it as a huge whip of sorts too perhaps? And undoubtedly her powers would be much stronger now!
The thought of Angel getting startled or scared is something I would never expect but I find absolutely hilarious—😭
Oh oh, imagine like this big big dragon, who acts like a scared cat when coming near to a body of water hah— I can kinda see Aven just chriping on the other side, encouraging her to come across the water
I find that really adorable😭💕
BAHA— the mental image of Aven restraining Edda is absolute gold! I really doubt that Edda would want to get close to the shore of the beach at all– oh god imagine every time the waves hit the shore Edda would kinda jump like a startled cat😭😭
Overall, human concepts and just things on Earth in general would definitely confuse the duo on varying degrees because, of course, their home world isn't like this
I feel like when the Photographer has visitors, the duo might be confused and maybe concerned, and would try to sneak out of the room to see what's going on, cue small bits of chaos of the Photographer trying to tell the two to go back and hide or they'll just attempt to hide them themself—
I actually don't know much about wing types and such, but upon searching them up, I'd say I agree, I can see them with those wings respectively🤔

Here is a magnificent frigatebird (Fregata magnificens). I believe this is a first-year juvenile, identified by the white head and breast. I just realized that I'm not sure if I've ever seen an adult. I'll need to look through my photos more carefully.
"Beachgoers delight in this large, black pterodactyl-like bird that soars effortlessly on tropical breezes with hardly a flap, using its deeply forked tail to steer. Watching a Magnificent Frigatebird float in the air truly is, as the name implies, magnificent. These master aerialists are also pirates of the sky, stealing food from other birds in midair. Males have a bright red pouch on the throat, which they inflate like a balloon to attract females. Females unlike most other seabirds look different than males with their white chest." - allaboutbirds.org
