It's really, really frustrating and brings up so much aggravation for me that one person on one livejournal blog from 2010 is still getting referenced and talked about in any serious way or the fact that this even became a term at all that was popular enough to be considered to have it's own fanlore page.

I'm re-reading the archived version of the original post that is linked on the fanlore page and I have mixed feelings. It's pretty clear that this individual was very...young?...exploring concepts like internalized misogyny and feminism in a very public and sort of... juvenile way (if that would be the right way to put it?)

It comes off as very "brownie points media feminism" that was starting to get really popular in online discourse spaces surrounding the representation of women in media (which included stuff like fanfiction and fanart). Basically, doing stuff, not because they wanted to or felt it was important, but because they had to, like you said.

And this part just made my skin crawl:

"But it made me realise: I want/need to talk more, think more, & care more about female characters, regardless of whatever excuse I'm cribbing off the fandom misogyny bingo card this week. It's like pigging out on French silk pie all the time when what I really need to do is just stop being such a baby and eat more vegetables until I get to the point where I eat them because I want to, because I like myself better when I do, and, oh, hey, turns out that, wow, real food is actually DELICIOUS, MMMM, and i do not need to indulge myself, 100% of the time, in yummy but ultimately unhealthy desserts!"

Female characters and F/F is veggies and this kind of reminds me of the stereotype the rest of the "community" and other lesbians, especially older lesbian comedians, has put on me and other lesbains. The stereotype that lesbians are "boring, monogmous, u-hauling demisexual (and sometimes we get grouped in as all being asexual) introverts who don't like to do anything fun, hate going out, don't like to have casual sex, don't really have any true sexual chemistry that is physical...your sex life and sexual attraction always has to be justified as some deep, emotion spiritual feminist experience that goes beyond the physical attraction...or something...etc, etc, etc." Annoying. I have heard it all before and it wasn't funny the first time...and it is extra annoying and frustrating when you are the polat opposite of what I just described and have to listen to others with more power than you talking about why their "LGBT" organization can't provide a lesbian night or lesbian sexual protective sex materials or support and guides for hate crimes or any other resources because "lesbians just don't get out that much."

It's also the same reasons given for why lesbian, sapphic, and WLW media "deserves" to get so underfunded and undervalued.

And also, holy hell misogyny and lesbaphobia with a dose of homophobia in there too? WLW is healthy and MLM is dessert and unhealthy.

Not to mention the weird biphobia section....but I also feel like that was just her being sarcastic and tongue and cheek on things sha has heard people say towards them and other women in the fandom so...ehhh...whatever.

But then I also read this section:

""The thing is I already do love female characters. Before I entered fandom - no, before I entered slash fandom--I wrote about girls all the time. When I was twelve I wrote about awesome sisters who rode horses! When I was 19 I wrote an entire novel about an awesome girl who cross-dresses! The heroine of my first fanfic ever--awesome! She time-traveled and practiced strategic fainting! And then I got to slash fandom and realized the girls I wrote about were all Mary Sues, and gradually I realized how childish and trivial and worthless were all my self-insertions and fantasies about horse-riding time-traveling pants-wearing girls. And... I haven't written any since. I miss girls. I love girls. I love seeing them onscreen, I love reading about them, and certainly I love making out with them, so why don't I want to write about them? And yeah, this whole thing reads like someone who as I said before, seemed very young, was coming to terms with things like feminism and internalized misogyny in a very public manner, had genuine feelings, frustration, and confusion for why they were feeling the feelings described above and then the internet ran with it and it became a thing.

But I don't know...maybe I am just talking out of my ass. Anyone who sees this can go here and read it for themselves to see if what I am ranting about is making any sense.

I think it also bears to keep in mind that when people in fandom use the term "eat your veggies"...at least now and even back then, it was, at least according to fanlore and what I have seen, not a term that was used in a serious way but as a way to make fun of both the author of this original post and the concept that writing F/F is a burden that can't be for fun and is somehow "healthy". But I'll let all the comments saying why the author was wrong on the fanlore page speak for themselves because they honestly said all this better than I ever could.

I also feel like it's important to say...there were (and still are) even back then, tons of extremely popular and well-loved F/F fandoms. Buffy and Xena used to have their own fanfic websites. They were so popular, it was even listed as one of the common reasons cited on why Ao3 in 2013 didn't have as much F/F as M/M in the 2013 survey centreoftheselights did.

"Movement lost momentum. Back in the heydays of Xena and Buffy, there was plenty of femslash to go around, but after those shows ended, there was nowhere for the fans to go. If you want F/F fic, you need to find an older archive."

and "AO3 is biased. There’s plenty of F/F fic out there, but AO3 isn’t the place to find it. It’s still in its early days, and the initial pattern of adoption has led to the archive disproportionately favouring M/M shipping more than fandom in general."

I saw recently people talking about how back in the day including or writing about f/f ships in fanfic was referred to eating your veggies or something- something you just had to do even if you didn’t want to so you weren’t called a bigot and it’s like why is that literally what it feels like with books in publishing these days

You can just TELL when an author is doing it to avoid being yelled at or to one up the people that were like “so where is the f/f content” and that their heart wasn’t in it the same way

Boobiegate begins! Celebtm has published its expose about Briana and her alleged sugar daddy, Micheal Straus. He claims that the reason he gave her thousands of dollars was because she was broke and he was raised by a single mom, so he felt bad for her. The article goes through the ways in which Briana’s OWN FAMILY called her “unstable” (pot, kettle much?) and then! AND THEN!!! Goes through babygate! They outline all of it - that people think Louis is gay and with Harry, that she’s photoshopped pregnancy pictures, that they are photoshopping pictures, that Louis never sees Freddie, ALL OF IT. In front of each claim, they quote a fan, so it cleverly seems like they themselves are not making the assertion, but as anyone who has reported anything in this fandom would know, everyone has an opinion. The ones you AMPLIFY are the ones that you legitimize, and Celebtm even went as far as linking tumblr masterposts on all things babygate if anyone wanted to dig into it. Well, better y’all than us! In the end, however, they do take a strong stand, saying:  “Whatever the truth is about Freddie’s parentage, it’s clear that Jungwirth has secrets. While the vast majority of babygate proof is speculation and fan rumor, it does paint a picture of a woman hiding something. Whether or not Tomlinson is in on the secret or being cheated remains to be seen.”  

Louis himself has said nothing, nor do I expect him to. Michael Malarkey, a former co-star of Danielle’s, posted a tweet with a picture of Louis, saying “WE LOVE YOU LOUIS” after seeing it trend on twitter and then plugged his own music. I assume that this random shout out is related to the stir that Celebtm’s article caused, but, honestly, maybe he just really loves Louis. I can certainly relate.

Liam is doing his best to steal my title of *ghost* writer, as he makes a spooky halloween account: let’s all welcome Cornelius the Ghost to this year’s Halloween shenanigans! It is unclear what Cornelius’ role in the show will be, or if this is an eroda style RPF lead up to Halloween. He is a cloaked figure who is haunting Liam for information about the Halloween LP show via Instagram. Silly ghost, you should be haunting this blog instead! We have you covered (cloaked? You get it)! MUAs on Twitter have begun to send in their Halloween looks into Liam’s competition and they are VERY spooky. I’m not a fan of horror but campy, spooky Halloween fun? Sign me TF UP!

Golden is LIVE...or is it??? Golden is impacting radio stations and climbing some radio charts, despite the Official Date of Impact being the 26th, I guess they just couldn't wait. I have not heard it on my local radio, but I’m more of a Spotify kinda gal, anyways. I think stations have started to jump the gun and are playing it, in spite of any official dates. Eroda has stirred, at any rate, and added a description to their Lighthouse attraction. They are describing it as, “Eroda’s famous lighthouse is the perfect place to catch a beautiful golden sunset”. Very nice, very romantic! The picture that immediately comes to mind is the last shot of the WMI director's cut where the cute couple walks into the sunset. Sigh, I love that music video.

Harry is VERY in LA; he’s meeting fans, taking pictures, hanging out with his costar Florence Pugh, and wearing his rings again! He didn’t have surgical gloves over them this time, so we can see that they aren’t ALL back, but his plain bands (including the peace ring!) are firmly on his fingers. One fan who met him asked him to take a picture of her and her friend, and she bought dessert for him. In return, he covered hers - or, sorry, an anonymous patron paid for her dessert - it’s always nice to see that his mother raised him well! We also got a little throwback to last Christmas (I gaaaveee you my heaaarrrttt) with Harry sitting on Santa’s Lap in an LA party, presumably around the time of Fine Line’s release. I guess those North Pole Catfishers from last month were onto something!

Niall and Capitol Records are celebrating three years of Flicker, so Happy Birthday, it should be walking on its own and forming complete sentences by now, and at least a meter tall, if Freddie is anything to go by! Niall is celebrating by spending the day in a recording studio with british singer songwriter Anne Marie, who’s dream collab was Niall! Go girl, make it happen! He was playing an acoustic guitar, and hopefully making more of that new music he’s been teasing in interviews over the last week.

Digimon Adventure tri.~ “Kokuhaku” [“Confession”] (Movie #3) featuring Characters: Koushiro[u] Izumi [Koushiro “Izzy” Izumi in US dub] (+relationship with) [+Taichi Yagami]; and how even their smallest “moments” affect his entire character arc + IMPORTANT DIALOGUES + Character Analysis + Potential Parallels to Past Canon

(Scene #1) - Koushiro confronts Taichi about going to see the Digimon; Taichi sadly shakes his head, places a half-hearted ‘consoling’ hand on Koushiro’s shoulder, and turns to leave. Koushiro is asking questions at the start and yelling after Taichi as he leaves (likely, “Taichi-san!!!”) but Koushiro’s voice cannot be heard.

(Scene #2) After hearing the blow from Hikari’s whistle (blown at this time by Tokomon, though Nyaromon owns it) {after Hikari gave it permanently to Tailmon at the end of Adventure}; the sound of which travelled across the worlds and reached them.

hello hello! i have no idea how long this has been in my inbox, i'm so sorry :'D /lh i just thought i got a buggy ask on a more popular sideblog of mine, but yeah it's ok to send it here!!

i feel like this carrd (alterhuman-hub.carrd.co) by @/custom-emojis is a good resource for a bunch of terms and whatnot relating to kinning, but the focus is mainly on alterhumanity/stuff like creatures rather than fictional characters instead. there are some bits about it, but i can do my best to clear things up if you'd like. i've been following the creator of that carrd for a bit, but i don't know if any other random carrds about fictionkin from twitter users i find on google are actually reliable lol

for my finding out my fictionkin stuff, i guess i sort of.. started kinning before i knew what kinning was lol (particularly about jevil stuff) and was introduced to the kin community through fandom friends online, then realized that those terms described me better. i sorta flipped back and forth between terms in the beginning because i was kinda confused, but yeah!

for me it did start out as "just knowing", then took actions to embrace it, like surrounding myself with things that reminded me of a certain character's past, relationships, or just self in general. after i had been introduced to the community i was hesitant to validate myself because Discourse Sucks, but i got more comfortable after a while :]

i could also try my best to describe more specific stuff you're curious about! if you'd prefer to stay anonymous, that's no problem, but my dms are open, and if you'd rather move to discord just lmk ^^

I couldn’t just reply directly to one because then it wouldn’t make sense, as the other two halves of the Asks would be missing. 

I want to start by saying if you enjoy Almalexia, be it in a simple way or in a thirst way, good for you. You enjoy the game how you want to enjoy it, because that’s what a game is for.

Now, that being said, I see absolutely no case for trying to “reclaim” Almalexia. Mainly because these “years of injustice” towards gay or female villains have long since passed. Yes, it was a thing, and yes it was horrible. But we’ve since moved on. I mean, as a woman, I’m proud to say that I could be flicking through TV channels or various options on any streaming app and find a series featuring a strong, independent woman- or involving a complex female villain who isn’t just “ugly”, but just enjoys being evil OR has a complicated and sympathetic background that forced her to become the villain.

Off the top of my head:

Hunger Games Parks and Rec The Office She-Ra  Steven Universe Owl House Rick Riordan collections Moana The Polar Express Song of the Sea

Wonder Woman

All these either feature one or both a strong female hero or a complex female villain, and they’re just the icing on the very real and very stable female empowerment cake.  

Will we still see ugly women portrayed in some fiction as villains? Yes, but we will also see ugly men portrayed as the villains. Usually for a purely comedic effect. If it’s bad taste, it’s easily seen as bad taste and therefore not well received, especially online. As for the gay aspect, that too has been changing- and funny enough some of the examples listed above are testimony to that!

Now to Almalexia herself:

I have to disagree, and argue that stating she is a “poorly written female” is a total injustice. Almalexia is an insanely good female villain. Why? Because when you face her, you feel fear. You know you are faced with an actual threat, a real challenge of a boss fight. She’s clever, resourceful, and you know she’s powerful enough to do as she pleases. After all, earlier in game she asks you to go force some dunmer to start worshiping her again or she’ll send an actual fatal storm to wipe them out. 

Please understand: the dunmer have a backwards and suffocating culture. They shove tradition down your throat, and even then will still hate you and say you aren’t good enough to polish their boots. It’s been like this for centuries, and why? Because the Tribunal never changed. Unlike other pantheons in Tamriel which adapted with time naturally, the Tribunal never shifted. Did you see Vivec and Almalexia ever lift a finger to stop the slavery in their lands? To stop the random wars between Ashlanders and the Houses? Did Sotha Sil even bother to change anything from the outside world in his Clockwork City for the better?

The Nerevarine is the change Morrowind needed. They’re this one outsider who doesn’t care about what anyone wants to try to force on them, and despite all the hardships, they ascend to power above any of these garbage people. They bring down the Tribunal, and Morrowind is able too breathe. 

This is why Alamlexia is such a good villain. Because she doesn’t want this change. Male or female, any gender is capable to be corrupted by greed and power. That was her from the get go. Both Vivec and Sotha Sil expressed regret at killing Nerevar. They didn’t change their ways, but they expressed regret. Almalexia never looked back. She knew what she was doing and never regretted it. Now suddenly the temple is finally falling, and she’s loosing her power. Yeah, she isn’t going to let that happen. 

So it’s you, the Nerevarine, who is responsible for a possible change for the better in the atmosphere of Morrowind, verses Almalexia, the last of the Tribunal who will keep things structured in tradition out of sheer greed. She literally worked out every movement you took from the beginning of that DLC up to point you see Sil’s corpse and she confronts you. This badass had a perfect plan devised, and I quote from her directly,

 "Nerevarine. Here it ends. This Clockwork City was to be your death. You were to be my greatest martyr! The heroic Nerevarine, sacrificing all to protect Morrowind from the mad Sotha Sil. But you live! You live! Fear not. I will tell the tale myself when this is done. I will tell my people how with your dying breath you proclaimed your devotion to me, the one true god. Your death will end this prophecy and unite my people again under one god, one faith, one rule by my divine law. The puppet king will lay down his arms and bow to my will. Those who do not yield will be destroyed. The Mazed Band has allowed me to travel to this place. Here, I slew Sotha Sil. Here, I summoned the Fabricants to attack Mournhold. I will be the savior of my people! I alone will be their salvation! None may stand in my way. Not you, and certainly not Vivec. He is a poet, a fool. I will deal with him when I have finished with you. And Sotha Sil...he always thought himself our better, shunning us, locking himself in this hole. He spoke not a word as he died. Not a whisper. Even in death, he mocked me with his silence! But I think you will scream, mortal. For now, you face the one true god."

What a set up for a boss battle!  

That’s insanely engaging! 

Honestly, she reminds me of Mother Gothel from Tangled. Always gaslighting her people, always making them believe she does everything out of love for them, when in reality she does it all only for her own benefit. 

Don’t get me wrong, Vivec and Sotha Sil aren’t saints. Even though they admitted regret, they didn’t do anything about that. They didn’t speak up, step down, or give the power back they stole. Instead, they tried to go under the excuse “we must continue on like this, the people can’t handle the truth.” Yeah, very convenient guys. 

But Almalexia outshines them both as one of the greatest villains in TES history. 

To Sum Up

There are things that need to be changed in Morrowind. The cringe, edgelord writing about Divayth and his daughters for instance. But the struggle between Tradition vs Progression, and the majesty of Almalexia’s final encounter do not need to be changed.  

If you want female empowerment in TES, then please look to the real icons.  Khamira, the young queen who faced an impossible rebellion. 

Lyris, who doesn’t know how to express nor deal with her emotions, and who gets weird looks for her sheer size by everyone else but her fellow Nords, but she keeps swinging that axe regardless! 

Valsirenn, who, despite having to revisit the painful reality of losing her daughter, still sought after her ex if only to find closure, and though Iachesis’ death weighed on her heart, she bit the bullet and saw things through to the end. 

And those are only three jewels of a treasure chest full of gems, let me assure you. if I had any real criticism, I’d like for female heroes to have more flaws. Nobody is born perfect, and half of what makes the hero is their struggle but final victory in overcoming their flaws or complications. 

This is the last time I’m reacting to Almalexia material on my blog. 

I don’t want my blog filled with fandom discourse. Yes, I’ve blogged before about Greymoor disappointments, but to be fair I was reviewing a product I paid $50 bucks for, and some people paid even more for it! I’ve received hate anon due to the Almalexia topic already, and had my words taken out of context due to someone not reblogging my actual argument but screenshotting the tags and only posting those. People ramble in their tags on tumblr. That’s a common thing. And funny enough, the tags are meant to go along with the actual blog itself. 

Any Asks sent regarding Almalexia will be ignored. If you have an excessive problem with my opinion on her, just block me. 

Again, I want to state: If you love Almalexia, just love Almalexia. More power to you. 

Just don’t attack people with long essays about how your opinion is correct and they are sexist for not agreeing with you!

This doesn't have much to do with the Discourse per se, but I've been a curatorial fan for ten years now, trying to move into the transformative sphere without much success... every time I try to write a story I find myself hamstrung by all the things I don't know, or might've gotten wrong, even though I also know that Canon is a Social Construct and the original creators will probably change half those facts by tomorrow, anyhow. Is it alright if I never evolve beyond the curatorial?

Absolutely! It sucks that you even felt the need to ask that question–we’re all in this for fun, ferchrissakes, and we all have different ways of liking things, and as long as you’re not shitting on other people’s ways of liking things there is absolutely nothing wrong with having preferences and sticking with them.

There’s also nothing wrong with branching out, so congrats on dabbling in the fic realm, even if it turns out to not be your thing. For what it’s worth, as someone who is also a “research myself right into a corner” type, one thing that helps me is to remind myself that storytelling is the art of Making Shit Up convincingly or entertainingly enough that nobody cares that you pulled it directly out of your ass. In the absence of airtight plausibility, conviction in selling your bullshit goes a long way towards convincing the audience to buy it. And they’re there because they want to buy it, if only for an hour.

Way back in the fanfiction.net days, when I was a snotty little teenage purist who did shit on people’s efforts if they weren’t “correct” enough, someone posted an excellent Les Mis fic with an offhand reference to an Alexandre Dumas novel. The line was charming. It was character-establishing. It was instantly understandable. But the novel hadn’t been published yet at the time the fic was set. I don’t remember whether I commented with suggestions for books that would fix the anachronism (at the expense of recognizability), or whether I was wise enough to keep my damn fool mouth shut, but in any case I learned something that day. Which was that the line worked. And the fact that the line worked, and accomplished something, and didn’t disrupt the internal logic of the story, was way more important to this story than whether a particular bit of pop culture originated in the 1830s or the 1840s. It was specific enough to impart local flavor for a story set in mid-19th-century France, and recognizable enough to be effective at communicating whatever point it was making, and delivered with charm and conviction. Which means it did its job. Maybe in another story its job would’ve included “being specific down to the exact year of publication,” but in this one, the imprecision of dates didn’t ruin a damn thing.

I know it’s hard to internalize that for your own efforts when you’re holding yourself to your own, extremely nerdy and in-depth, standards of accuracy. But sometimes it helps me to remember that anecdote–so I can give myself permission to take a deep breath, consciously relax my standards, and go “you can asspull exactly as much bullshit as you can sell to the audience.” Even Patrick O’Brian, the high king of research nerdery and holding oneself to absurd standards of accuracy, made the year 1812 go on for like five years. For the sole reason that it was more fun that way.

And that’s what it comes down to: This is what we do for fun. If you want to try your hand at selling stories to an audience, mixing canon details and asspulled bullshit and trusting that they want to believe, because they’re there to enjoy the ride–awesome. If that ends up not being your idea of fun–well, now you know.

I don’t know exactly what you mean by the transformative sphere of fandom–whether you’re coming into Tumblr/LJ/AO3 fandom from forums/Reddit/wikis/etc, or whether this has been your community all along and you want to branch out your activities. If it’s the community that’s new, please don’t think you have to create fanworks yourself to hang out here–fic fandom relies on having loads of people who read and interact but aren’t creators themselves. It also relies on having people within its ranks who can do “curatorial” activities–on research betas, resource blogs, wikis, transcript compilations, informative meta, and masterposts of everything under the sun. Maybe the more galaxy-brain side of the current Discourse likes to deny and devalue those parts, but they’ve always been here and they’ve always been vital contributions in their own right. If you’ve been in these circles a while and don’t feel like your activities “count” because they’re not “transformative” enough… trust me, It’s The Discourse That Is Wrong.

An Elusive Computer Post

Y’all, 99.999% of the time, I exist on my phone and tablet. It’s very rare that I do any Fandom Stuff or social media on my laptop. But tonight, after This Episode, I had to break out the big guns. I need to be able to type as fast as my brain screams words. tl;dr: EVERYTHING IS THE WORST AND I HATE IT. Hey I’ll do a fun little page break so you don’t have to scroll past this whole thing if you don’t want to. How nice of me.

OPENING SCENE AND ERIN’S ALREADY YELLING AT PEOPLE. COOL. 

JUST DON’T with this foster parent (allegedly) killing a foster child thing. Foster parents have enough of a negative perception as it is... a foster parent who “cracked” and killed a child in her care certainly won’t help. And I know this won’t turn into a well-done, thoughtful Discourse on the lack of support and resources for foster parents who are caring for children with complex needs. So I hate it. 

I’m so, so, so sad for this child.

Sidenote re: Sam saying “I’ve already got a mom” (explaining why he didn’t call his foster parent “mom”) - okay, BB, one actual sensitive portrayal here, thumbs up. 

Welp Erin’s boss is an asshole but so’s everyone else on this show. What else is new? 

And now Sam is locked out of his new foster home. Another nice tally in the Negative Portrayal column. This is disgusting. His appreciation for his previous foster parent is obvious (this kid’s a ten times better actor than fucking Will “Dead Face” Estes at this point) and I hate this entire concept. At least the show’s portrayal of the child in foster care himself is positive. 

Now Sam’s at Anthony’s house and this is off topic, but for half a second can we appreciate that Sam is also a bajillion times better at apologies than Jamie Reagan? Nice. 

If Anthony becomes Sam’s foster parent I will be SO ANNOYED. One, because I’m sure the show won’t even hint at an accurate process - it’ll be insta-parent, Anthony walks into some caseworker’s office and walks out with physical custody of a child (fun fact: it takes three months or longer to get licensed as a foster parent). Two, because it’s kind of another blow to the reputation of foster parents that this episode is painting - like the only suitable foster parent in a whole city of veteran, trained, experienced FPs is this newbie? This does not taste good. 

This is a cute scene. Rather than Anthony being Sam’s foster parent, how about he becomes his mentor? 

OH. NICE. EXACTLY WHAT I DIDN’T WANT. “I’m going to sign the papers later today. I’m going to foster Sam myself.” Can we please get some follow-up on this, BB? Let’s please see Anthony trying to navigate the waters of parenting a teenager who likely has attachment-related diagnoses and other challenges. Is Anthony going to get trauma-informed care training? Or is he just going to wing it and hope that it’s all magical and swell? Does he have a sensitive, non-snarky bone in his body? I’m on the edge of my seat. (LOL @ Erin being the voice of reason here.)

OH. WHOA WHOA WHOA. “It’s not like I always wanted a son, but one came knocking and I answered the door.” Remember that line above where Sam reminded us that he has a mom? Do you understand why this line made me gag? There’s a fine line you walk as a foster parent, where you’re performing all the duties of parenting this child as if they’re your own - but you have to remember and be sensitive to the fact that they’re not. Kids in foster care are a package deal, yo, they come with a whole other family too. For teenagers this is an especially important Issue. 

This entire storyline was terrible. 0/10. 

Fat Shaming (Frank and co)

Poor Witten, you guys. That is awful and terrible and dangerous that her partner can’t even make it up 4 flights of stairs. “I’m here and you’re fine” - but what if she wasn’t? 

Did Sid Gormley just use the word “fat shaming” and argue that physical fitness does not affect a cop’s ability to do their job? 

Cops who are on the beat should be able to pass a fairly high standard for physical fitness. The end, basically.

Family dinner (tossed in here due to the topic of conversation): Seriously? Henry’s going to talk about it being discrimination to require cops to meet a physical fitness standard that is a pretty basic aspect of their ability to do their job? Nice. 

Oh, magical, Frank has come up with a Compromise that Makes Everybody Happy. Raise your hand if you’re surprised.

TBH I hardly noticed this storyline at all. I’m much too busy angrily scribbling all of the examples of Dismissive Jamie on my whiteboard. Oh well, win some lose some.

The way Jamie brushes Eddie off during this whole New Partner Discussion is gross. Refer to yesterday’s Two Pronged Complaint for the details. 

The Biggest Issues: Jamie minimizing Eddie’s experience on the job, and being too protective of her/failing to be an objective boss. Et cetera. 

“wHaT eLsE dOn’T I kNoW?” suck a dick, Jamie Reagan.  

Peep those obviously empty coffee cups that probably have a piece of dry ice at the bottom to make the “steam.” A+. 

I’m going to keep track of how many times “female empowerment” is said in this episode. I’ll keep you updated. 

So this “fraternal organization” that we’ve all been so stressed about Eddie joining is...basically a women’s intramural sports league? LOLOL so I’m super excited to watch Jamie sputter about how Joe died playing softball* and therefore Eddie shouldn’t join. 

LOOK AT EDDIE. She is legitimately excited about the idea of playing softball, dude. That smile is as much personality as we’ve gotten out of her all season. CAN’T WAIT TO WATCH JAMIE “WET BLANKET” REAGAN SNUFF THAT RIGHT OUT. 

This ~date night~ situation is hilarious in a Young Childless Couple way. 

OH, so NOW Jamie’s interested in a legitimate conversation with Eddie, engaged and responding... with questions in a demanding, rude tone? I’m so annoyed at his whole handling of the Eddie’s-new-partner thing.

I’m so angry that the scene cuts off there. Did they just go about their stupid dinner date with this Tension floating palpably in the air between them? Did Eddie pull out an “I think I’ll sleep at my place tonight” and stalk away in that red? satin? dress? ? I hope she poured his stupid ON TAP IPA (objectively the worst type of beer, btw) down his shirt and walked out. 

I AM SO SAD watching this scene of Eddie backing out of softball. 

“I’m not much of a joiner” is a DUMB RIDICULOUS LINE and Eddie says it TWICE, folks. 

Witten doesn’t bring up Jamie at all - I therefore assume she doesn’t know Eddie’s a Future Reagan (which is a whole other issue, but anyway.) . Witten thinks Eddie’s backing out so as to avoid associating with Witten. So I assume Witten’s intentions with the softball invite were totally pure. IMAGINE THAT! A woman who wants to be friends with another woman, one who she works with and respects and wants to get to know better! With no ulterior motive! Someone please hit Jamie Reagan in the nostril with a dart. 

I like Witten more and more. Can we replace all the Reagan storylines with Witten, Sam, and Old Eddie in dark jeans and a studded jacket?

A LAUNDROMAT? ONE: Shouldn’t Jamie, as A Reagan, have laundry in his building?* TWO: It he didn’t, why wouldn’t they do laundry for free at Frank’s house every week?*

I CAN SMELL THE TENSION and I am legitimately curious how they’ve coexisted between the date and now. How’s that working out, hmm - that “keeping work and home separate” thing? 

“I DIDN’T TELL YOU TO, I ASKED” says Jamie. Shall we go back a few bullet points to when he told her it’s a “no-go”? 

I NEED TO KNOW WHAT ELSE I NEED TO KNOW - Same, Eddie. Do I really need to reiterate how ridiculous this whole thing is - that they’re engaged without dating, and now finding out that maybe there’s a reason people date first, even if they’re best friends, because this is the kind of stuff you work out before you start shopping for your dress.

“Are we talking, or are we just talking smack?” SOME ACCUSATION from the dumbass who said ALL THE THINGS IN THOSE BULLETS UP ABOVE. 

Finally, for once, Eddie is voicing some real and legitimate concerns. Are we going to get any sort of resolution or mature adult discussion of these things? NOPE! 

Did he seriously just tell her to cut it out? I hate him so much. I hope somebody duct tapes him to the front of those washer/dryers and pulls out each individual eyebrow hair with tweezers. 

This laundromat scene just exemplifies so many of the issues I’ve been rage blogging about all damn season. Jamie ultimately brushing off Eddie’s concerns without ever giving her real answers. Not having the respect for her to even take her thoughts into account. Barking orders like he knows it all, and Eddie isn’t capable of making her own decisions. At least this time that’s the actual point of the scene rather than the nasty subtext. 

EDDIE AND DANNY SCENE: I’m actually surprised that this is the first time Joe has been mentioned. Watching the sneak peek I figured Jamie’s main argument against Eddie joining an organization would be that it’s what got his brother killed (being vague, obviously, since Eddie clearly didn’t know the details). Not that it’s improper As A Reagan. I hoped the context of the episode would make me feel a little better about this scene but it just feels even more out of place and poorly/choppily written. I like Eddie and Danny together - I’d like them to interact more. But this didn’t do it for me. Gotta meet that Joe Mention Quota* on the season, I guess. 

FINAL SCENE: in summary, FUCK THIS. 

Sidenote: When is someone going to get suspicious @ how often Eddie gets pulled into Sarge’s office? 

For the record, I anticipated an eye-rolly “Ohhkay, maybe I overreacted...” speech.

Jamie explains himself. Fine, he has a right to do that, and it’s constructive in helping Eddie understand the man she’s about to marry (god don’t even remind me). BUT HE DOES NOT ADMIT ANY WRONGDOING.

THERE IS NO ADMISSION THAT HE MADE MISTAKES in how he spoke to her, ordered her around, and didn’t even stop for eight seconds to listen to what she had to say

“So maybe if I forget sometimes, you can remind me” THIS IS GROSS TOO because it essentially puts the burden on Eddie to teach/remind Jamie how to HAVE AN ADULT CONVERSATION AND NOT BE AN ASS. He could AT LEAST take responsibility for his own improvement in the Future. 

Eddie said literally two words in this entire scene. There was no mutual understanding, no real agreement, no genuine Development in their relationship. 

THIS IS NOT A SATISFACTORY RESOLUTION TO THIS CONFLICT. 

This episode is called Rectify but NOTHING HAS BEEN RECTIFIED. 

ALSO, this seems like an awfully Personal conversation to be having in uniform, Sarge. Are they even trying anymore?

(1) I want your opinion on something: do you think that the people who like rika excuse her for what she did to v? And is it because she's a female character? From my pov, it's hard to see it considering that v has a LOT of fans and rika has a LOT of people who want to rip her head off, not to mention that people who either disliked v or liked rika didn't really get a nice treatment from the fandom(a friend of mine was bullied)-

-(2) and with the amount of experience that me (and possibly others) got from many fandoms, if v was the villain, I can assure that he would still garner sympathy and would even be jokingly called daddy. I definitely won’t see him as daddy material but I’ll obviously like him as a villain. Right now? He looks more of a bella swan to me. My theory? It’s cause it’s a romance genre with a male dominated cast directed towards a female audience.

I think agood starter will be a quote of an ask I saw today on someone’s blog. I will notcomment the answer not reveal the blog’s address as I’d rather avoidany kind of discourse with them. Let me just place this ask here:

Yes. Rika’sfans are undoubtfully treated badly in this fandom. No matter if it’s aboutliking Rika or justifying her actions, surely the amount of hate they get istoxic and overwhelming. It has nothing to do with an exchange of opinions anymore. It’s buillying in it’s clearest form.

I participate in RikaPositivity server on Discord, and it’s probably the best resource in thistopic. So, let me say that: I haven’tseen a single person who’d say what Rika did was good. Despite what somepeople try to push into our mouths, we do realize what she’s done – to V and toSaeran – was bad.

But you can’tjust say the blame is all on her, and let me explain, why.

There’s socalled human act, an Ethics term.There’s a difference between humanaction and human act and here’s a quite good explanatory I found (click on the text for the link to the page):

Human action or human act should be investigated because it is beingconsidered that not all human actions are considered as human act. It isconfusing but it is being determined that the act that was committed must bedone knowingly and willfully by any individual before we can declare thathe/she is accountable for it. In short, an act committed without the knowledgeand consent should not be considered as a human act.

Accordingto the study, only human acts can bejudged as they’re the things we’re responsible for and not everything we do is a human act. 

There are various obstacles of human acts, and mental illnesses are one of them. But not only. Lack of knowledge, addictions, accidents, even being, let’s say, sleepy on a particular day – these are things that can naturally make you less responsible for the things you do. (Keep in mind the blame usually can’t be pushed onto anyone else this way; there are things that just don’t depend on us)

Now, returning to V’s and Rika’s case.

Of course it’s only natural to try to get a treatment if you’re aware of your state, but I’ve heard an opinion stating that Rika’s completely at fault for being crazy, as she didn’t get the proper treatment even though V told her to. 

So, let me quote a dialogue from SE01, from one of their memories (beginning of 3rd episode):

V: How was therapy? It’s been three weeks already.

Rika: I’m going because you wanted me to… but I don’t know if my state is treatable. The more I talk to the therapist, the more I see the vicious sides of me. I’m so scared…

V: Rika… I’m sure things will get better if you keep talking to her.

Rika: No, I don’t want to go anymore. The therapist just tells me to find peace and overcome my wounds… but the darkness inside of me… can’t be healed that easily. I’m used to being depressed and feeling empty. If I just relax for even a second, my real self… my anxiety will just all come out.”

V: Just let go… and you’ll feel better.

Rika: I don’t know how to let go. Right now… I want to destroy myself. Don’t you get it?

V: Rika, look at me. You can if you look into my eyes. No matter how you are, I won’t leave you. So don’t worry… and just find peace. It will be better. Tomorrow will be better. I’ll save you…

Rika: You’ll save me?

V: I love you. If you want, I’ll save you.

(…)

V: You can test me until you believe me. Even if you strangle my neck, blind my eyes, and destroy my limbs… I love you. I am your sun.

(…)

V: I love you… If my absolute love can save you, if that’s what you want, that’s what we can do. Rika… So that even I’m the one who hurts you… choose to be mine. I will become a dominating and unfair person for you. 

(…)

V: I will be the person you need. (…) You are… already in me.

I showed three important points here. About Rika’s general state, her relationship with V and the way it influenced her.

Rika trusts V. She tries to get a treatment because he told her to. But it’s not helping her. Of course, three weeks is not a long time. Surely not enough to see actual effects. But Rika is already in despair; she doesn’t see any good sides in her situation. She even hurts herself at this point and believes it’s the right thing to do. She’s not a person who’s able to decide on her own anymore. But she trusts V more than anything, and, as this person in despair, decides to listen to him. 

Have a look at the important part of this conversation: Rika says she’s scared of ‘relaxing’, as it’d cause her bad side come out. But what V tells her to do is to ‘let go’, as he decides to take this all upon himself. He believes he can deal with whatever happens after.

V tells Rika he’s going to save her. He’s the one who says he’ll become her “sun”. He generally lets her know she doesn’t neet a treatment because he’s enough to deal with it all by himself. And she believes him.

And THIS is the exact moment when it all starts.

I don’t think Rika should be blamed for what she did to V, at least, not to the degree she is blamed for it now.

I will use another example here; a lot of people justify Jumin’s famous bad ending saying that MC was tempting him and generally telling him to treat her like a cat. I personally don’t agree with this excuse, but we have a similar situation here: the difference is that Rika and V are together for a bit LONGER than these… two days of ‘relationship’ (that’s why I don’t think Jumin’s behaviour can be justified, but it’s a completely different matter). And - as we know - Rika is already unstable all this time.

So it’s really hard to say that Rika’s guilty for everything she’s done to V: because, first, the reason why her ‘bad side’ came out is because V told her to ‘let it go’ as he assumed he’d pull it off somehow, and second, he literally tells her to do all these things to him, later on not regretting his choice and still keeping on his opinion that it’s al-fucking-right.

Rika’s state worsens drastically through the whole plot. In V’s route we still have some sight of her original personality; she doesn’t really mean to harm RFA, the way she’s talking to them using the chat is - in my opinion - sincere (of course it can be discussed, but that’s just how I was seeing this). We can’t forget that she really did care for the others, and a good proof is her reaction to Ray’s death on 10th day. She literally breaks down into tears. No matter if the whole cult was strongly related to her way of trying to ‘prove’ herself, it doesn’t mean she didn’t care about these people; even when she realizes it’s over for her, she wants them to escape so that the ‘bad world’ wouldn’t reach them. 

In Secret Endings though, her state is so bad she cannot be considered sane anymore. The way she treated Chois is completely different from how she acted in V’s route, which is really meaningful. While playing only Secret Endings, it wasn’t that clear, it may have seemed that she was that bad all along. But Another Story shows the contrast between how she acted in the past, how she acts now, and how she acts in the Secret Endings, and that’s a very important piece of information more of people forget to acknowledge.

And, why people hate Rika so much?

You mentioned it twice, the fact that Rika is a girl and that V is a man which does make a difference. Yes, Mystic Messneger is a romance game ‘destined’ to women, mainly straight women. The plot shows is pretty clearly that women are treated ‘worse’ as they’re potential rivals to MC. Jaehee is a character who’s totally friendzoned, and all the female side characters (except for V’s mother) are mean vipers, in general: Echo Girl, Glam Choi, Sarah. All the female side characters end up as antagonists, unlike, for example, Vanderwood (friendly reminder: he’s a MALE) who gets a way better personality, while these three are… actually quite similar in their reasoning and behaviour, nothing to really focus on.

And eventually, just as a definite majority of MM fans are straight women, the result is that it’s way easier for them to despise other women than men.

Another thing is, a lot of people decides to dislike Rika even before we get any actual info about her behavior, as I suppose, because of how RFA is focused on her from the beginning. Rika is a very important character and just as important RFA member. From the very first day we’re flooded with the mentions of her and especially Yoosung’s behaviour (in and out of his route) obviously doesn’t make us like her more. It’s also one of the rare situations when an important (even though undateable, at least untill 2 months ago) character is in such a close relationship he hasn’t gotten over yet. Rika is the only person that can be considered a rival to MC. In these circumstances it’s really easy to focus only on the reasons to despise her.

This work exactly the opposite way for V. His personality is more soft from the beginning, he gives us that needs-to-be-protected attitude and so, we’re more eager to find excuses for his behaviour even if we see him making mistakes.

To summarize it all, I’d like to say one thing.

Both V and Rika are very well created characters. They have good sides and bad sides. They do good things and bad things, less or more wittingly. But just as I believe Rika deserves more understanding from this fandom, I believe V’s mistakes should be acknowledged AND eventually forgiven.

I think the main problem was Cheritz’ way of presenting the ending of V’s route. I suppose they did it to please the fandom, and the thing they did is - let me say that - a little OOC (I should rot in hell for this statement). I believe in normal circumstances V wouldn’t want to completely cut Rika off like he’s done in his route, but after acknowledging what he unwittingly leaded to, he’d sincerely want to fix it one way or another, as even though he didn’t love her, he did care for her, which is obvious after that many years of a relationship.

Because neither V or Rika are bad people. What they’ve done is a result of either lack of knowledge or their mental state which partly or completely make their actions less of a ‘human act’. And even though their relationship became toxic, they chose each other out of their real feelings, and not a purpose to hurt anyone.

Yes! Nepeta!!!! I’ve always wanted to play her but I don’t have the confidence because I lack proper grasp of her character.

Ooo yes definitely. Beloved, for one, has the most amazing prose I have ever seen. I’ve learned a lot from their writing and I still aspire to someday be able to write something as breathtaking as their works. Quenive as well has spectacular writing and their stories and dialogue flow so well and j u st ohmy g od.

♧ Is there an RP partner(s) that you credit for becoming a better writer?

Definitely. I would say it was all of the people I’ve roleplayed with before that allowed me to develop Hal so much. The people in my old group chat definitely helped me flesh out different aspects of Hal that I could play (ie: sadist demon while still managing to be an angsty know-it-all) and the spontaneous connections on parp really helped me figure out how to play Hal in stupid situations while still keeping him ic.

There’s also the au’s I’ve made that would be fun to play out but they’re difficult to explain. Merstuck au’s are also amongst the favorites to play along with dragon rider au’s I love me my fantasy genre. Whoops that was more than one but listen ok I want a lot of AU’s.

Hmmm I’m not sure. I can’t think of any at the top of my head but any AU that revolves around Jake probably wouldn’t work well with Hal.

I’m not personally a fan of them and I can’t say I see the appeal but if that’s what rocks another person’s boat then I’m not going to be the one hating on them. As of the moment I don’t have any as threads.

Yes!! They’re a lot of fun and I always think throwing the unexpected at my muses is the greatest thing ever.

Late afternoon or evening because that’s the time I’m awake and Functional and have actually thought of Creative ideas to write.

Maybe something based on the Renaissance period? Or the classic medieval period. Ancient Greece would also be fun to play out.

There are many. Just, anything that is fantasy I probably want to do it. I’ve never really tried the whole AU with the fae/faeries so perhaps that would be fun to look into.

Nope, he wouldn’t be interested in the actual sport. Going to see hot guys though? Definitely. I don’t generally go on a day to day basis because I understand like nothing. If a friend wanted me to go or a teacher was giving extra credit for me to then yeah I’d go.

I have actually never written smut so I can’t really say. I think it’d be difficult for me to having had no experience whatsoever with anything relating to smut.

There was this once I tried to roleplay Dave and it just. It went terribly wrong I had no grasp on his character and I still don’t. Never again.

▼ Do you keep your character in character even if they are one of the worst people in the world?

I would like to think I do because Hal is objectively one of the worst people in the world. Though, I’ll admit I do a lot of justification for Hal’s actions from Hal’s point of view because Hal doesn’t see himself as a villain. Just a terrible person. I am also very soft on Hal and he probably acts happier than he should.

▽ Why did you create this muse?

True story but when I finished reading Homestuck I was like “shit I need to pick a character to roleplay” because that’s just what I did. I like to roleplay and Homestuck was such a large fandom that it was bound to be Fun to roleplay. There were many Failed and Subpar attempts to rp some characters on parp and I just couldn’t find a character that clicked, y’know. I tried John, Dave, Karkat, Jade, Rose, Dirk and just nope. And then. On a random spur as I scrolled through the available options in the Parp menu I saw “Lil Hal.” Of course, at the time, I only clicked it because I had thought I exhausted all other resources and if I fucked up everyone else why not fuck up this character I knew nothing about it (and I mean literally nothing about. I used to hate when Hal started talking in the comic because I thought it was so damn annoying). But surprise I was?? I was good at rping him?? People liked my shitty depiction of Hal. So I read more about Hal and how to play him and he just grew on me and here I am today.
