[Survey] Content Management on Archive of Our Own

Carol Zhang, a second year Masters of Digital Arts and Humanities student at the University of British Columbia Okanagan is doing research on Archive of Our Own under the supervision of Dr. Jonathan Cinnamon. This research is specifically examining how users interact with the archive’s tagging system and how their wider Internet usage could impact that. Part of this research is the survey - available on this link - for which Zhang is looking for participants.

The survey is anonymous and it takes 10-15 minutes to fill out. It will be available on the above link until January 20th. Participants must be at least 18 years old. More information about how the responses will be stored can be found in the consent form and if you have any further questions, you can contact Carol Zhang at the email address zcarol@mail.ubc.ca.

The results of the research will be available through the university’s thesis archive, cIRcle.

If you are interested in talking about content management tools and your experience navigating the archive and you are eligible, consider contributing to the research by filling out the survey.

AU where there’s a third jujustu tech high, Principal Kenjaku, teacher Sukuna, and assistant supervisor Uraume(Who’s secretly just super powerful but became an assistant supervisor to be closer to Sukuna.) Ahhh that makes me sooo happy to hear!!! That is the biggest reason why I try to tag every post so extensively with tropes! Because I want people to be able to go into my blog, click the tag, and find many more examples of fun things! (The other reason is because of triggers). Dead dove do not eat is a term used for fics with triggering topics. It’s a “hey! there’s some upsetting stuff here you might not enjoy!” warning before you go any further into reading. If your definition of proshipper is “likes problematic ships” (which is wrong btw) wouldn't it make sense that these are the people that use it the most?

Also we were here way before you, you don’t have any authority to dictate who can or can’t use a tag, especially with a logic as embarrassing as yours.

OK I might upset some people with this but:

Tags are, first and foremost, an organizational thing. As long as they're not being used to spam or otherwise go against the TOS, no one has less of a "right" to a particular tag than anyone else. Gatekeeping is never a positive thing.

Tumblr clearly states "Your tags make it easier for others to find your posts on Tumblr, or organize posts by a specific topic on your blog." Not that there's a standardization everyone has to stick to. Not that you should depend on tags to find others like you without anybody else in them. Not that tags belong to specific people or groups. Not that anyone has to or should agree on a use for a particular tag. Tags are a search and organizational feature belonging to everyone.

It makes sense for broad, general tags about a thing to include all sorts of posts pertaining to that thing—including fiction about that thing. If you want a tag specifically for that thing in real life, you can easily make a more specific tag like "#[thing] irl" or "#real life [thing]".

I've seen a few people getting mad that tags relating to disability include fiction with that disability. I can see why there might be some frustration there, but ultimately no one has exclusive ownership on tags and they need to stop acting like they do. People can use the tags for an organizational system on their blog, to help people find tropes or even good representation in fiction, introduce others to the topic, or to allow people to filter out personal triggers or such, and those are all fair uses of the tag even if it's not what you're using it for. If they're not using it to spread spam or hate, they're using the tag within acceptable parameters.

I'll admit I don't know the experiences of particular disabilities. But I am autistic and I wouldn't have a problem with seeing posts about fiction centered around the topic in a wide, general tag like #autism. If I wanted to specifically find real autistic people, I would use a more specific tag, go somewhere else, or use another method of finding people. I'm not helplessly and completely dependent on a single tag for connection and no one else is either.

Additionally, blocking and filtering is an option. You can curate your own internet experience instead of telling others what they're "allowed" to do with theirs.

I’ve seen this happening recently now that I’m reading fics again: readers want to read for a specific pairing, but the tag gets clogged up with miscellaneous fics that feature a particular pairing, but is not focused on it.

Filtering the search with “otp:true” helps a lot. Not all the way, but it shaves down quite a bit, especially in a very large, very active fandom.

Just thought about it and wanted to spread the word just in case. Happy reads, xoxo.

While we're at it, a PSA for the Malevolent fandom. Time zones exist and people have busy lives. Sometimes it takes a while to listen to new episodes. That wouldn't be a problem, if we all used correct tags on our posts.

But, we don't. I have "malevolent 43" and "malevolent episode 43" blocked, but there are so many variations I can't possibly untag them all. Yes, I've already gotten spoilers. Am I upset? A bit. But it can be changed.

Note: "Malevolent spoilers" is too vague. Though it's certainly helpful for new listeners.

Welcome to the tumblr home of my vampire comics!

I make these for fun, so I don't really put too much pressure on myself to keep up with deadlines and such.

It's chill. It's chaotic. It's not written in the correct order. It's... well...

Low Stakes is my rather light-hearted comic about my queer vampires - I don't really try to restrict myself to any genre, so anything is possible really. Friends have described it as a supernatural slice-of-life, which probably isn't too far off.

Essentially, this is just me thinking about my OCs and documenting it on paper. Bits and pieces of their undead lives.

It all started with an unwanted turning, and it just kinda snowballed from there! :D

sorry if this is a bother, but would you please tag your noncon whump prompts or responses to noncon asks? I am extremely uncomfortable reading anything that has to do with sa or noncon and have the tags blocked but I really enjoy whump. I want to keep reading your prompts and stuff but I don’t feel comfortable running into noncon and sa prompts/reponses.

I try to tag trigger warnings at the beginning of my posts (as in the warning is tagged as a part of the text in the post, at the top, not in the ‘tags’ section) since it’s from my understanding that each person has different tag lists blocked in their setting, for instance, someone has the word ‘noncon’ blocked while someone else has the word ‘r*pe’ blocked, and if I tag the post as ‘noncon’ the post will still show up for the other person who has the tag r*pe blocked, and vise versa, and it’s more than just these 2 tags (noncon, r*pe, sa, sexual assault, etc). this was an issue in the past where I used to tag this one exact wording and then I had people asking me if I could tag something else instead (if I could use different wording for my tags) and all of the tags I was asked to tag are in different phrases/ different wording despite their meanings being the same (understandable, because it’s impossible for everyone to collectively have the exact same wording blocked), so I thought the best way to assure everyone’s safety was by having trigger warnings as a part of the post itself (not the tags), at the very top, this way people can scroll past it without reading its content if they’re uncomfortable. that being said, I believe more than half of my prompts do contain non-con material or other material that can be considered non-con to some (whether or not it’s sexual) and while I try my best to tag all the trigger warnings, sometimes it still slips. so if you’re not comfortable with these subjects, I’m afraid my blog may not be the best whump blog for you. I understand that these are heavy topics and can be heavily triggering, and I believe your safety and mental health should always be the priority. there are other good whump blogs that don’t post prompts revolving around these subjects. and I also believe you will enjoy those blogs more without risking running into things that are triggering. (I hope this doesn’t come across as rude or offensive, because that is not my intention at all. I do want everybody to be safe and okay, and I understand that some of my prompts contain dark material, and I genuinely believe tagging trigger warnings at the top, instead of the tag section, for the reason mentioned above, so people could scroll past if they felt like they had to, is the most effective way to ensure everyone’s safety, but I do encourage you to unfollow or block my blog if you feel like you have to. your safety and mental health are more important.)
