Doctor Strange and the supernatural characters pt 1 - Nico Minoru

Since Nico will soon be featured in v6, I decided to start with her. For context, let’s do a quick review on her character.

Nico Minoru is a member of the Runaways, a team of teenagers that found out their parents were part of a cult called The Pride. Their goal was to perform a ritual to release the elder gods called Gibborin, who would feed on the souls of the entire world and claim it for themselves. The Runaways saved the world, but their parents died in the process. As a consequence, their hearts never recovered from that trauma, which only worsened due to the following betrayal of one of their teammates, Alex Wilder. The TV show is more or less loyal to the characters, but there are heavy differences in case you’re wondering (and one of them is Nico’s character development, which I’ll explain in a second).

Nico comes from a powerful japanese clan of wizards and her weapon is/was The Staff of One, which she stole from her evil parents. It turns out this artifact is actually an ancient sorcerer called The One, who was challenged by Nico’s ancestor. He lost the battle and thus was turned into the Staff. Nico only learned about that recently in the last Runaways volume, when The One came out and revealed himself.

In the past, Nico was forced to draw her own blood to summon the Staff out of her body, but after making a (terrible) deal with The One, she no longer needs to harm herself in order to summon the staff. In exchange, The One releases a drop of his own essence into Nico’s soul, one at a time. On top of that, her staff allows her to perform spells only once, failing whenever she tries to repeat them. But this is not the only issue with Nico and her magic.

She went through a VERY traumatizing experience along with her teammate Chase in Avengers Arena, when Arcade kidnapped sixteen teenagers and created his own Battle Royale scenario. She lost an arm and actually died there, but the staff brought her back, boosting her magic powers and giving her a new artificial arm, although turning her a little more violent. Her mental health was severely damaged there, and so she decided to never speak of that incident ever again.

Following this event, in Avengers Undercover, she infiltrated Zemo’s organization along with the survivors of Murderworld. Their first goal was to rescue Elsa Bloodstone’s little brother, Cullen, unaware that he actually wanted to stay in order to find Arcade and get revenge for Murderworld.

Meanwhile, Nico was welcomed by Daimon Hellstrom (please don’t ask), who was working under Zemo’s leadership (please don’t ask²). Daimon summoned the soul and body of Alex Wilder back from hell (since he was dead) so they could train magic together. Alex’s true intentions were never revealed, but I do suspect Daimon was using him to waste Nico’s spells and also make her vulnerable since Nico had a relationship with Alex before his betrayal. She later realizes that it’s useless to train her magic skills because she wouldn’t be able to use them a second time in battle, accusing Alex of manipulating her.

After that, Daimon teleported them to a hall where Arcade was hosting a murder game. They did kill Arcade, finally getting their revenge, but he just a meat doll created by Daimon. Zemo manipulated them all so he could lure the Avengers while he attacked S.H.I.E.L.D. and framed the kids.

Turns out Daimon was not only manipulating Nico but Cullen as well. Daimon taught Cullen how to control the monster inside him, unaware that his true intent was to put it under his control (please don’t ask³). Since Arcade was still alive, they proved their innocence, although another emotional scar was carved into their souls.

(”oh, but aren’t they teachers at Strange Academy?” you may ask. YES, they are! Marvel’s continuity, am I right?)

Later on, Nico also joined the A-Force team, which sadly didn’t last. But she became good friends with some of the members, such as Dazzler and Singularity (her relationship with Carol became sour due to a terrible event called Civil War II, although they were able to come to an understanding).

Lastly, the Runaways reunited once more, facing new challenges concerning their found family. The volume was sadly cancelled, although it brought huge changes for Nico. She asked Karolina to take The Staff of One with her to space, which depowered her magic abilities significantly. The consequences are seen in Midnight Suns, her last appearance, where she constantly struggles with self-worth and self-doubt (just like a certain magician we know hehe).

That’s what leads us to the next topic: her personality.

Nico is the very definition of a bi disaster. One of her most infamous bad habits is the fact that she’s always trying to kiss almost every member of her team in order to cope with her loneliness, whether they’re single or not. The thing is, the smallest sign of affection is enough for her to get involved with someone, and at the worst possible times (for instance, after burying a friend). Don’t get me wrong, I love her and I’ll protect her. But I can’t pretend she doesn’t have the same bad coping mechanisms than Stephen did when he was trying to forget Clea. And that’s what stood out the most to me as a Stephen stan, opening my mind to ideas of how they can bond.

The thing is, Nico constantly feels alone and insecure about her own capabilities. First of all, there’s the leadership issue. After Alex’s betrayal, she was forced into leading the Runaways, although she canonically states she never wanted that in the first place. It’s a responsibility she was never ready for.

Secondly, there’s the trust issues. Their parents lied to her all her life and tried more than once harm her. She was in love with Alex and then he betrayed everyone, constantly inserting himself into her life and making it a living hell over and over (sometimes quite literally). She trusted Doc Justice and he tried to murder the Runaways in order to promote himself, even though she swore she’d never trust adults.

And that’s a super interesting point because... The very premise of the Runaways is that adults are bad. They refuse to ask for help because the Avengers and the X-Men failed them over and over. This is why Nico never asked for Stephen’s help like Illyana did. And yet... It seems that this is about to change in v6.

I don’t really know where writers are going with their relationship, but I do hope that Stephen realizes that The One is slowly infecting Nico’s soul. That’s a good thing, believe it or not, because Stephen can be a good role model to Nico and a bridge for her to work on her trust issues regarding adults. He can teach her how to get rid of The One’s grip and also teach her safer methods to perform magic. Friendly reminder that Wong also taught her a spell or two.

Overall, I believe that the Strange Academy was a fresh start to her because Nico doesn’t really have a purpose. Karolina is her first stable relationship, and she’s off to space to deal with Majesdanian stuff. Besides, if Nico is considered to be the “mother” of the Runaways, Chase was the “father”, and he was taken to the future for a reason yet to be explored in future stories. Point is, she needs an adult figure to reassure her. The Midnight Suns was another good addition because she was able to open up with Illyana and find comfort and self-worth.

Personally, this is truly touching and meaningful because, as I always like to put, the magic community has something quite special going on. Their connection runs deeper because of the soul/spirituality. And that’s why I have huuuuuge hopes that Stephen will be able to reach out for her. It’s been shown that he keeps in touch with her whenever magic is involved, not to mention the school itself.

It’s true that they barely interacted in the past, mostly because Nico is always neglected when it comes to big magic events (Last Days of Magic, Civil War II etc). Strange Academy was another missed opportunity, but there’s room now thanks to the team of v6.

This is what I’m looking forward to, honestly. Even with limited powers, Nico is quite creative, although her self-destructive tendencies get in her way, which is exactly what v4!Stephen used to be. I’m pretty sure he’d see himself in her and would do his best to support her. That’s Nico’s opportunity to bond and grow as a character, to work on her trust issues, to heal from the trauma she’s been through and create healthy relationships, not only when it comes to Stephen, but the magic community as a whole. Friendly reminder that he taught magic to both Jericho and Illyana and almost became Billy’s and Wanda’s mentor.

So this is it. As you can see, the potential and background are all there. I’m really excited to see what comes next for them and I do hope they’re able to create a nice and sweet bond in the next issues!

Flushed Away!!! I saw it on Netflix and was like hell yeah I got to rewatch this--I was obsessed with this movie as a kid? Like I loved Rita...It's still pretty funny, but also it's so British lmaooo.

Before that I watched AstroBoy cuz I also saw it was on Netflix and it definitely doesn't hold up as much (there were so many characters the movie could do without, and also its very Anglicized like the character went from Tobio to Toby, etc) but I blame this movie for making me partially obsessed with characters made to replace someone else (coughs)

And before that I watched Bullet Train with my friends! It was so funny and ridiculous I kept laughing. Lemon my beloved <3 Music slapped too

The Tim Has Come to End It

Hey there, canned nacho cheese. Well, here we are. It's finally time. By the end of this review, we will be done with Avengers Arena. Won't that be nice? There will be no more Child Murder Island. No more bad Hunger Game ripoffs. Arcade will probably get punched again. Anyway, let's get into it so we can get out of it~

...which is just the first cover again, but more! Seriously, does this not encapsulate the whole series in one neat summary? Reusing the first cover might seem thematic, but then you remember it was also a Battle Royale homage. And it really digs deep into how few original or even good ideas are even in this story. Bad from beginning to end, just like the series~

So we open with Apex sitting in Arcade's chair, once again reminding us she's totally not a monster, you guys. You know, as she sits in Arcade's chair, going over his list of unused tortures (man-eating insect swarm, sentient typhoon, napalm winds) and admiring his restraint in not using them constantly, like she would have. Everything went to shit even with his hands-off approach. And as Apex continues to admire Hazmat exploding, she mocks Deathlocket, frozen to stare at the screen, as liking to watch. No, not a monster, not at all...

As nuclear energy continues to pour out of Hazmat, she begs the others for help. And luckily, Chase revives enough to notice her, and shouts loud enough to get everyone's attention. And to their credit, they do stop fighting once they see Hazmat about to a splode. Reptil turns into a giant crocodile and scoops her up in his mouth, rushing out away from shore. And then the detonation happens. Clearly you're supposed to believe they're both dead, but the comic has established that if it doesn't show their life meter at zero, they're not. So way to undermine your own tension, comic.

Continuing to demonstrate her non-monster personality, Apex screams at her TV, like any rational person or let's play fan. Don't be sad, you idiots, press the advantage! Yeah, not a monster. So she figures she has to do everything herself, running her finger down the list of torture options. And thus, the insect swarm is released, the ocean and sand both start to come to life as creatures to attack them... Cammi passes Chase back the Darkhawk amulet, and Nico breaks out the old Runaways catchphrase: "Try not to die!"

While watching this, Apex Not-A-Monster goes over to the paralysed Deathlocket and begins waxing nostalgic about how the hardest one for her to kill will be Deathlocket herself. After all, who wants to deliberately break their favourite toy? And that's when Locket swings around and punches Apex in the gut, shouting she's not a toy. And unlike Apex's proclamations of being not a monster, I believe Locket on this one. She continues to beat on Apex, and Apex begs her brother and other self, Tim, to give her back control.

And while Locket beats Apex down and aims her cannon at her, she's actually not a monster. Apex shifts back into Tim, and Tim begs Locket to shoot their shared body and end it. He can't wrest more control from Apex than this, all he can do is basically keep her clamped down and beg Locket. After all, if she doesn't take them out, then Apex will take control back and end her instead. It's a big dilemma, and both of them are begging and screaming, and the comic isn't going to do us the courtesy of showing that conclusion immediately~

The rest of the kids are still fighting, but not for their right to party. And then, very suddenly, it all dissolves. Everything falls to pieces and the fight stops. From out of the ground, Locket rises in a blue sphere of energy and a blood-soaked T-shirt. She did the deed. Arcade's fled, Apex is dead. It's over and they can leave. But before they can do that... They have to get their story straight. Chase thinks they should just tell the truth, but Cammi points out that even if folks believe them, they won't take it seriously because they're kids.

And that's when Hazmat rises out of the sea, free of any radioactive glow. She proposes they tell them nothing. Nobody gets details, because if they do, then Arcade wins. And thus does it end, with a Sun Tzu quote about treating your soldiers like your children, as the various heroes round up the survivors--even Darkhawk and Reptil are shown being recovered--and the news reports on the terrible actions.

Sixteen super-teens kidnapped and held for 30 days, by person or persons unknown. And while certainly the sick bastard who did it to 'em is responsible, so are the adult superheroes who "failed" the kids. Surely they're as much to blame, rant the TV pundits. And safe in a classy hotel, popping champagne and uploading the first of his videos to the 'net, we get one last glimpse of Arcade's horrible smirking face as the comic ends. While he's not getting direct credit, everyone's still talking about what he did. He won.

Let’s start with the most important thing. This series was started to kill off a bunch of teen superheroes. Never forget that. Be they the established ones--Mettle, Red Raven, Juston and his Sentinel--or a bunch of OCs made up for this story--Kid Briton, Nara, Apex/Tim--don’t forget their names. Much like our old review of Heroes in Crisis, don’t forget the side-characters who died to bring you this awful story.

That story’s still worse, by the way. At least the plot of this one was conducted by an actual villain. In the stupidest, most contrived way possble, but at least it’s not a story that exists to commit character assassination. Just literal assassination. This story’s awful, but only on the same level as the New 52 Teen Titans reboot. Which, come to think of it, also had a terrible Hunger Games ripoff as part of its plot. That’s essentially what this is: the Culling from Teen Titans stretched out to a full series.

Anyways, we picked apart the whole range of reasons why this series sucked over the course of the review, but let’s summarise. Arcade was turned into an all-powerful god-mode villain and gets away with everything. The teens were not given any actual motivation to murder each other, and waste loads of time futzing around instead of being heroes. The story exists to essentially kill off some D-list teenagers, and that’s just not an enjoyable plot. And much more!

Hey, while we’re here, did anybody notice my little game with the titles? To really ensure you don’t forget any of the kids who went through this, I put every one of their names into the review’s titles. 16 kids (plus one alter), 18 issues. The only one that didn’t get one was issue 7, because I didn’t want to dignify Arcade with the gimmick. Usually they were thematically involved with the given issue, either on the cover or doing that issue’s narration. And sometimes I had to shoe-horn it, like Red Raven’s. But it was a fun challenge.

About 11.53% of my year was spent reading

I had difficulties deciding how to count WIPs that were updating throughout the year but eventually I managed to keep track of the difference in word count between the last time i read it and the new word count. Not sure if I'll keep it like that next year. I ended up reading 71% completed works, partially because it was such a pain to calculate and keep up with WIPs in this system, partially because it's a habit for me to filter them out automatically.

I was all over the place in terms of fandom in the second half of the year but Jan-June I read mostly MCYT/SBI fics. From July-Dec, only September had MCYT as its top fandom.

I tagged everything as one of four genres: Fluff, Angst, Smut, Dark. I read 280 Angst - 35% of fics, 202 Fluff, 128 Smut, and 170 Dark fics.

In terms of the tags I read, I manually tagged all my fics when I entered them and my most-read tag was Hurt/Comfort. Second most-read tag was Found Family. Following that was some smut tags I had... may be a data error because if there was smut I made sure to tag it right but I didn't tag small instances of other things in that ff.

Also, I only added some tags later on, like Slow Burn & PWP, so they don't appear at all in earlier entries. For 2023, I've kept a lot of these tags and added more, especially to cover the romance front since I wasn't reading much rom in the beginning of 2022.

I really liked this project, it encouraged me to finish the fics that I read. It also made me read & ao3 bookmark more mindfully, I think. I'm really interested to see the difference from this year to next year.

Okay I am going to need you all to repeat after me:

"The MCU is a symptom, not the disease"

Hollywood in general has some massive problems right now, and some of them are genuinely new and unique problems (not as many as people on tumblr seem to think, but definitely not 0), and the Marvel Movies are the cause of exactly none of them

The MCU has a lot of these problems, there are MCU movies that exemplify most of the problems with modern hollywood movies, (are also MCU movies that exemplify most of the good points of modern hollywood movies, but that's a different argument), but they are not the cause of those problems. The MCU going away would not fix any of those problems.

The MCU is not the reason vfx and CGI artists are not uninionised, that's the fault of union busting efforts by AAA games companies and media conglomerates like Disney, AND it's an effect of modern global communications meaning that the work can be outsourced to teams overseas if artists within the USA demand better pay. This is a new and unique problem to this moment in time, because you can't outsource work on physical sets overseas without moving the entire movie production, but CGI artists do not need to be on set, so it's easy to hire teams in China or Vietnam to do the work for less than teams in the USA in a way that's simply never been true before.

The MCU is not the reason studios no longer invest in mid-budget films, that is the fault of falling cinema ticket sales scaring investors, and the late-stage capitalism obsession with growth at any cost leading studios to reinvent the road-show era mentality, when the entire studio's survival rests on the success of failure of one or two movies. Yes the runaway success of the Avengers played a part in investors deciding that $300,000,000 film budgets were a viable option, but a) it was that successful because it's a pretty perfect summer blockbuster, not flawless by any means, but a solid action movie that a lot of people genuinely enjoyed, b) there's nothing inherently wrong with movies that expensive existing, as long as less expensive movies also exist (a budget like that pays the wages for a fuck tonne of people), and c) so was the success of the Bayformers movies, and y'all aren't sending death threats to people online for liking the Last Knight or whatever the fuck the King Arthur one was called

The MCU is not the reason Disney is obsessed with plot twists to the point of hiding information from their actors, that's a combination of Disney has honestly always been pretty awful about IP protection, a handful of high profile leaks that made studios jumpy, and the fact that in the age of streaming and reduced cinema attendance, the easiest way to ensure people watch a movie when it releases is to make them think there's something about the movie which will be ruined if they wait a week. Short of selling film canisters with built in self-destruct mechanisms, 'this movie has a big twist and it won't be as good if you already know it going in' is the quickest and easiest way to do this, and crucially, it doesn't cost anything extra because it can be written into the movie at the scripting stage. Also a weird number of cinema-goers actually do care about spoilers, and twitter has meant that avoiding spoilers is basically impossible. There's a reason kids movies are largely exempt from the twists for the sake of twists mentality and it's that kids aren't (theoretically) on twitter.

(Also people stopped buying DVDs, so that's no longer a significant revenue stream for studios, so they don't care if people want to rewatch a movie or not, so it doesn't matter if the twist doesn't actually make sense and makes people not want to rewatch the movie because it's not like they were going to buy the DVD anyway).

Pretty much the only problem in modern Hollywood that can be traced solely to the MCU is the fixation on shared universes (and they're not actually bad in isolation as long as studios remember not everything needs to be a shared universe), but even that's just investors doing what they always do and trying to predict what made a movie successful without taking into account that it might just have been a good movie. Shared universe movies themselves can be traced to the MCU, but the phenomenon of studios just copying whatever the last thing to be success was absolutely cannot.

And the MCU not properly crediting and compensating the comics writers and artists? That's not even a Disney problem (although they have made it worse), that is a Marvel Comics problem and always has been (hey look, a thing you can actually blame Stan Lee for without needing to make up weird conspiracy theories about unsuccessful spider-man movies!). Disney is absolutely making it worse, but the Sam Raimi spider-man movies had the same problem, and so did the 1979 Captain America movie, and so did the unreleased 1994 Fantastic 4 movie. Marvel are real shitty about paying royalties, and this has been a known issue since the 60s.

You do no have to like the MCU, no one has to like any piece of media, but people liking and paying to see MCU movies is not the reason Hollywood is shit right now. The MCU is a product of the studio system, not the cause of it.

Block MCU related tags if you want to. Unfollow MCU fans. Don't go to see the movies. Advocate for a CGI union or better conditions for actors. But please stop pretending that disliking some movies is some kind of activism, or that the movies are somehow uniquely flawed, because that's not how any of this works.

Revo (Kallig) Sepho, the Forcewalker - Sith Inquisitor

Age: 25 y.o. in Prologue\Act 1 Advanced Class: Marauder (after Act 3 - Assassin\Sentinel) Alignment: Somewhere in the middle Former slave and arrogant lady. Does her best to appear selfish, but in fact has more light inside than it may appear from the first sight. Has a brother, Ashley, and does her best to protect him from dangers around and (especially) himself. Also totally by accident became a Revanite.

Ben Revo - Jedi Consular

Age: 51 y.o. in Prologue\Act 1 Advanced Class: Shadow Alignment: He's confused I should say, that he's NOT going to be my jedi consular. He's mainly my OC that I wanted to play for a bit. Ben used to be a Jedi Sentinel during First Galactic War. He left the Order after some events and started a family with a woman he loved. They had two children and they lived peacefully until the Empire came. When the Imperials demanded surrender, they protested and hoped that Republic will send troops to aid them. But they didn't. Almost whole village was slaughtered and those who survived became slaves. Ben survived only because of luck and because some good people took him in and helped him recover. Since then he tried to find his lost children since he there were no bodies of them. With years, hope slowly turned into hatred to all the Imperials and especially Sith. He became a Sith hunter in hope that if he can't find his lost family - then at least he'll avenge them.

Will'ow Satori - Bountyhunter

Age: 16 y.o. in Prologue\Act 1 Advanced class: Opertive Alignment: Goodie, but likes to blow up things (and people) She's not my main Bounty hunter, but I headcanon her being a part of my other Bounty Hunter crew. A runaway kid who wanted to become somebody in this life. A good mechanic and likes to make bombs. Doesn't really like Empire and tries to cover her face with helmet whenever they are on Empire territory. Also, really likes Mako and they're besties.

Yanek Ragtith - Sith Warrior

Age: 20 y.o. in Prologue\Act 1 Advanced class: Juggernaut Alignment: Dark Side Arrogant and privileged ass. Quite an egoist and selfish, but appreciates a good fight. Acts like an ass, but actually just wants to make his parents proud. Had a conflict with Revo Sepho and Ashley and they treat each other as rivals. Sepho calls him offensively "the Golden Boy". Actually, really likes Vette and her smirky comments.

My thoughts on... Avengers Arena 2012 (#1-6) "Kill Or Die"

So after reading through Avengers Academy and the X-23 comics I was very excited to start this series! It's really nice to catch up again with the cast of Avengers Academy as they're a really fun group. Although the fun didn't last long as they were put in a killing game! When I first learned about this series I was very surprised about Marvel doing a Hunger Games-style comic with a bunch of their young heroes, but I was also very intrigued. And so far it hasn't dissapointed! The first issue alone had me shook when they killed off Mettle. A really sad moment honestly, everytime Mettle and Hazmat find some sense of peace and happiness with each other it gets ripped away from them. It was really gutwrenching to watch how Mettle exploded in mere seconds. Red Raven was also a character that didn't survive the first issue. I really wish she would've because her design is really cool! It was also very interesting to meet other unfamiliar characters, such as the Braddock Academy. I really love how at first they kind of seem to mirror the Avengers Academy. But then as you get to know them it turns out they're all horrible people who hate each others guts. Kid Briton especially. When you first meet him, you think he's this likeable guy but then as the story progresses you really come to learn how messed up, terrible and self centered he is in all the worst way. Although in the end he didn't survive the first 6 issues as well. But I really loved how they set up the Braddock Academy and subverted expectations with it. Another really cool thing about this series is how besides all the craziness of a killing game, they still make time to explore some of the characters on a more personal level. Rebecca Ryker and Chase Stein especially stood out. They both had some very interesting exploration in this. With Rebecca you have this seemingly innocent girl who went through a lot and really is in over her head in this killing game while seemingly having a secret darker side. I'm really intrigued as to where that storyline will go. And with Chase you have someone who's more affraid of winning that dying, which I found to be a really interesting mindset. And they explored it super well! It was really nice to see the Avengers Academy group up and take care for each other even though Hazmat is very on edge due to what happened to Mettle. I didn't like how they acted towards the Runaway members in the game though. They've been through some stuff together and litterally have stood in each others shoes, yet the Avengers Academy members really don't treat them in the right way and trust them a lot less than they should've. It was kind of sad to see the Runaways get chased away like that by them. I'm also very worried for Laura Kinney as she's been exposed to a seemingly new version of the trigger scent, so I wonder what's going to end up happening to her. The preview of day 29 in the first issue doesn't seem to indicate she will be affected by the trigger scent for a long time! These first 6 issues were a strong start for this series. Each issue left me wanting to read more immediatly and it hooks you so well into the story. They balance all the different groups really well while still making them to explore characters on a personal level. It's going to be interesting to see how things will evolve from here on out. Especially with the Braddock Academy being at each others throats and a trigger scent exposed Laura running loose.

Request - I want to know if you can do a Chase Stein from Marvel runaway x Stark male reader while Chase and his friends are running away from their parents and while that they bump into the male reader who is the son of Tony Stark the reader knowing who they are he decides to help down and bring them back to the Avengers Tower.

Chase is in his bedroom, he rapidly packs the items he will need. He runs out of his house and his parents start to chase him. He is running fast and he meets up with his friends. Alex is driving the van and he stopped and Nico opened the door, Chase jumped in the van and Alex starts to drive fast. Chase is breathing hard

“We need to lay low for a while,” Karolina said.

“They would be tracking us. We need to ditch the van” Nico said.

“Where I do keep driving to?” Alex asked.

“Just keep driving,” Chase said.

Their parents use their gadgets to track down their kids. Chase and his friends ditched the van in a different city. They are lost and they start to walk.

“How are we going to lay low if we don't know where we are,” Gertrude said.

“We would think of something,” Chase said.

They keep walking, they are completely lost. They are just walking anywhere then Nico bumped into you hard, you and Nico fell. They help you and Nico stand up

“Y/N!” Chase said very loud.

They hugged you and you do hug them, kinda.

“What are you guys doing around here?” You asked.

“What are you doing around here?” Chase asked.

“I was helping friends of my dad,” You said.

“Y/N, we need your help right now. We need to lay low but we would tell you everything” Gertrude said.

“Can you help us?” Alex asked.

“Y/N are you ready to go?” Happy asked.

You introduced your friends to Happy.

“Yeah, come with me,” You said.

Everyone gets in the limo and Happy drives you and your friends home. They tell you that their parents are villains, they need to lay low.

“All of you can stay with me,” You said.

“Y/N, thank you for helping us,” Alex said.

“That’s what friends are for,” You said.

At the Avengers Tower...

“Your dad won't mind?” Alex asked.

“He will be okay with it. Right now, he is with the team on another earth which is Earth 218” You said.

Everyone looked at you confused.

“Wait, there is only one earth,” Karolina said.

“Nope. Actually, there are different earths and some people call it the multiverse. Come I will show you” You said.

They follow to your lab, you used the hologram to explain the multiverse. Everyone is in shock and they had no idea about it.

“Wow that is so cool,” Chase said.

“Follow me, I will show you to your bedrooms,” You said.

“They sometimes stay with me and my dad and Pepper,” You said.

You showed them to the guest bedrooms. Next, you gave them a tour of the tower and they are impressed.

You take off your goggles.

“I am upgrading Black Widow’s gadgets and weapons,” You said.

“You met the Black Widow? She lives here?” Chase asked.

“Sometimes she stays here but she has her place. I mostly help others fixing their weapons and gadgets or improve their suits” You said.

“Do you need any help?” Chase asked.

He is hoping that you will say yes, he just wants to be around you.

“Yeah sure. The electric bracelet worked then it stopped, it only lasted about six seconds” You said.

“Let me see what I can do,” Chase said.

You and Chase stay in the lab all day working on gadgets. You would have pizza with him for dinner. The conversation changes to different topics, but Chase is enjoying it. He hasn't stopped smiling and he starts to like your smile.

The next day...

You have been working all morning to improve Bucky’s new metal arm. You still haven't worked on the design or decided on the color. Chase walks into the lab with lunch and you smiled at him.

“I noticed you didn't come upstairs for lunch” Chase said.

“Thanks. I am starving” You said.

“I made you a sandwich and toasted the bread but not too much. Oh, and I got your favorite drink” Chase said.

He smiled and he sat next to you. You start to eat your sandwich and you smiled at him.

“So... Umm, I saw Peter come in earlier... Is he your boyfriend?” Chase asked.

“No, he isn't my boyfriend. He just came to pick up the new suit I had to make for him. I broke up with my boyfriend Percy about four months ago” You said.

“I’m single too and looking,” Chase said.

“You would find someone,” You said.

“You too, Y/N,” Chase said.

Chase wakes up and walks to the kitchen to get something to drink. He starts to yawn and he looks at the time and it's 3:45 AM and he heard a noise from the lab. He goes to the lab and you are still working.

“Y/N it's 3 in the morning. Come to bed, you need to sleep” Chase said.

You stopped for a moment.

“Wow I didn't even notice it's 3 in the morning,” You said.

“Let's go to bed. You need to rest” Chase said.

“Fine,” You said.

You stand up and he grabbed your hand. Chase take you to your bedroom, he helped you pick out your pajamas. He didn't look and he let you change in private. You start to yawn and flopped on the bed.

“Aren’t you happy that I pulled you out of the lab?” Chase said.

“Okay, I would admit I am tired. You can stay here with me if you want” You said.

“Yeah,” Chase said.

You and Chase get comfortable in bed.

“Y/N, I really like you a lot. I want to be more than friends and sometimes I think of kissing you. I like spending time with you and you don't see him as a dumb jock” Chase said.

You are feeling speechless and your eyes opened wide. Chase can feel his heart beating faster and he is waiting for your answer.

You and Chase are lying next to each other and your hand is against his hand. You gently put your hand on top of his hand.

“Chase, I feel the same way. I do want to be more than friends and yeah sometimes I think of kissing you” You said.

He smiled and you smiled too. Now Chase and you are facing each other, he leans in and you feel his lips against yours.

The Next Morning...

Tony comes home and he is very tired. He does know about Chase and his friend staying because you sent him an email. He goes towards your bedroom, he sees you and Chase sleeping. You have your head on Chase’s chest and his arm is around you.

Much later during the day...

“Hey dad,” You said.

He does hug you and you smiled at him.

“Son, we need to talk,” Tony said.

“Talk about what?” You asked.

“We need to have the talk” Tony said.

“Oh, dad. Do we have to? I know about safe sex. Why are we having this talk?” You said.

“I want you to be happy. But also I want you to think smart” Tony said.

“Dad, I know about condoms and other stuff. I had sex health class in high school” You said.

“Good, because I didn't know what tips to give you except for don't forget to wear a condom,” Tony said.

“Dad, please stop,” You said.

Swiping into Avengers Tower made you feel important, more so than swiping into a SHIELD base. You weren’t exactly sure why, though. Perhaps it was because SHIELD was a secret, and no one knew. Here, the passerby on the street looked on in awe. Or maybe it was because the Tower was so elite. Because so select few got to enter. But really, it probably wasn’t that you got to enter so much as why you got to enter.

True, since your first day on the job, word got around that you were the best in your field. Fast as lightning, you’d risen through the ranks to be Fury’s top tracker, a position all but secured when he brought you on for this case. A case, you knew, that intrigued you far more than it should have.

Just like everyone else had on that day a little over three months ago, you watched the TV with rapt attention as gods and superheroes made themselves known to the world. And, you supposed, supervillains too. Not that you’d told anyone, but something didn’t quite sit right with you in the weeks after when news anchors and colleagues alike were referring to the raven haired god as such.

For the next three days, you’d pored over books of Norse Mythology and a number of studies. Most of the latter coming from one Dr. Jane Foster, who you soon came to link with Thor. But even there you found a disconnect between the god of legends and the bloodied man on your screen. He never really did have malicious intent before. He was a trickster, yes, but he’d not even come close to doing something this drastic before! Ok, yes, there was his involvement in Ragnarök in the myths, but even for that you’d found multiple sources that could debunk it. Besides, it certainly didn’t seem like Asgard had even faced the end times yet.

Alas, you figured Thor knew his brother, and you had your own case to work on, so you let be the mystery that was Loki.

And then you were called into Fury’s office a week ago and asked to begin tracking the god. A bit too eagerly, you’d agreed to take the case. You’d dealt with villains before, truly evil people, and your search only further proved what deep down you already knew; Loki was not one. Everywhere you followed his trail, a mysterious savior was stopping bank robberies and saving people from burning buildings and runaway trains. Not to mention there were multiple descriptions of said savior using green magic. It seemed a wonder that the tracker in the case before you hadn’t noticed. Then again, people tend to only see what they want to.

Regardless, you made your way to the elevators, heading toward the conference room on one of the upper floors. You tapped your foot as it ascended, impatient to share your findings. As the lift stopped and you got out, you tugged on your leather jacket. It was ever so slightly too big, but it was on sale. Plus, you felt like it looked pretty cool, considering your job and all. Subconsciously, you puffed up your chest a bit too. Regardless of actual size, you felt like a petite little thing, stepping into a room of now renowned heroes. Strange, you thought, how so much could change in just three months.

“You know, I got to get me one of those,” said the man suddenly keeping pace next to you. You quickly identified him as Tony Stark.

“I... Pardon?” you replied, slightly startled.

“Your jacket,” he said, pointing at it. “I feel like the leather will match the whole rugged good-guy, vibe. Besides, I think Capsicle’s got one.”

You chuckled at that. “Maybe we should just make it the team uniform then.”

“Team, huh? So you must be that new tracker kid we’re working with.”

“I’d hardly call myself a kid,” you scoffed.

“When you get to be as rich as I am, you get to call everyone a kid,” Tony shrugged.

“I’m not exactly sure that’s how it works, but whatever you say, I guess,” you chuckled again.

“See, now if everyone would just adopt that mindset, we’d get stuff done a lot faster around here.” He quickly signed something that was brought up to him on a clipboard, never stopping. You wondered how long he could keep up like this before collapsing. “Besides, take it as a compliment. That last tracker was some fuddy-duddy old guy.”

“Fuddy-duddy?” you guffawed. “Maybe you’re the old one, after all.”

Tony feigned like he’d been struck in the heart. But before you could keep up the banter, you reached the conference room, and Steve was waving you inside.

“Stark,” he said with a nod. “Are you ready to begin or are you going to keep distracting our new teammate?”

“Aye aye, Captain,” he said with a little salute. “Reporting for duty.”

You mouthed a sorry as you followed Stark into the room. Even if the rest of them turned out to be hard-asses, at least Tony was fun. And having one ally was better than none, you figured. As you took your seat across from your new friend, you flipped through the file that had been left for you. It wasn’t really anything new, so you glanced at your teammates again. Nat and Clint both nodded at you, recognizing you from a couple other missions you’d interacted during. There wasn’t really any time to talk, however, before Captain Rogers was walking to the head of the long table.

“Alright, team. Before we get started, I think it’s worth mentioning we have a new member on the team,” Steve said, before welcoming you by name. “I think we’re all caught up on the situation here, so let’s dive right in. A new trend has shown up in the Tower’s data mining.”

“Data analysis,” Tony butt in. “It sounds more ethical that way.”

“Whatever you want to call it, the program showed that wherever Loki goes, there’s a spike in activity of an organization calling themselves AIM. At first glance they seem innocent, but after some digging, we’ve found they’re anything but. We’ve determined Loki is working with them, perhaps even masterminding some of their more underground projects. Agent? Can we assume you found the same things?”

“Uh, yeah, no. Actually, my data shows the opposite,” you cleared your throat. Standing, you slid the information from your tablet onto the room’s TV screen. “See, it seems that he’s actually doing good deeds. There are multiple accounts of a man fitting Loki’s description performing heroic works.”

“Ok, I’ll bite,” Tony said, leaning forward. “What about AIM then? You think it’s a coincidence.”

You bit your lip. “I’ll admit, I haven’t found anything about them yet. But... maybe, just maybe, Loki’s showing up where they are because he’s trying to stop them.”

“I am so sorry to interrupt, but that does not sound like the Loki I know at all,” Thor laughed. “A wonderful joke, though.”

Now you were getting mad. You shouldn’t be, but you saw something worth defending in Loki. A lot, actually. There was something about that look in his eye that you couldn’t quite read, but it was telling you something was wrong all the same.

“That’s not fair! Maybe you don’t know him as well as you thought. Look at this,” you said, swiping to show a side by side of Loki during and after the fight. “You can see it by the look on his face; something was seriously wrong during the battle. Plus, I’ve seen videos of him when he first came; he was not alright. Afflicted with severe anxiety and what looks like burn marks, I’d say. He needed help.”

“With all due respect,” Clint chimed in, “aren’t your a tracker, not a psychologist?”

“Yes, but as such I’ve been trained to look at all the details. Not just what’s convenient.”

“Listen,” Steve sighed before things got any more heated. “It’s a great theory and all, but you read Thor’s account of everything that happened before this. So, until we get some solid evidence proving otherwise, we’re going to have to stick with what we already know. We’ll put a pin in the AIM thing until you can take a look, though. Ok?”

“Ok,” you agreed, defeatedly taking your seat again.

You looked around the table. Natasha and Bruce, the only two who hadn’t said anything, both looked kind of pensive. Alright, maybe bewildered was the better word for Bruce. He was smart, no doubt about it, but you got the impression he wasn’t very good in social settings. Then there was Clint and Thor, both who seemed a little skeptical of you. At least Thor seemed to be considering his brother’s innocence at least a little. Steve was a bit more unreadable as he continued to prattle on about what you already “knew” for the case. And then there was Tony, who seemed more impressed than anything else. He, at least, had seemed to genuinely consider what you said. Perhaps he still was.

“The best way to solve this,” Steve closed his spiel, “is to bring him in. Agent, have you located him yet?”

You sighed. Deeply. It shouldn’t be this much of a struggle to present your findings. You’d had no trouble speaking on his behalf. Yet a part of you—an alarmingly large part, you realized—didn’t want to turn him in. But who were you to ignore direct orders?

“Yup,” you conceded, pulling up a map with a blinking red dot, marking Loki’s location.

“Well then, team,” Steve said to the group. “Let’s roll out.”

No One’s Red Raven About Her Disappearance, I Bet

Hey there, opinionated smoke detectors. Well, we're back in the pit. We got the final six issues of Avengers Arena to get through, so we might as well get started, yes?

Okay, this is my favourite cover of the whole series. I don't need to see the next five or remember the previous 12 (most of which were movie ripoffs anyway). This one wins. If you ain't read Runaways--well, first of all, go read at least the first volume (#1-18) of Runaways, it's my favourite comic of all time and you're missing out--but also, Molly Hayes is one of Nico and Chase's fellow Runaways. The youngest of the team and a genuine sweet kid. So of course she would make this poster. And secondly, the two implications here: A) someone in the outside world has finally noticed 16 superhero kids have gone missing, and 2) enough people care to take Molly's... hashtag, I guess?

So we open with Arcade with his stringy red hair and goofy white tuxedo, which is never a good way to start a comic. He's in a good mood, which is also never a good way to start. He's strutting around, preeening and plotting about what his next way to escalate his stupid teenage death game will be. Meanwhile, his robot secretary is repeatedly trying to get his attention for something important. He's as douchey a boss as he is a supervillain, though, so he keeps ignoring her until she yells, and he asks what's so important to interrupt his being-a-douche time.

That's when Giant Man, Thor, Wolverine, Captain Britain, and the Hulk bust through his ceiling~

Alas, the comic is not about to get cool and give him a comeuppance he richly deserves. No, it's all holograms Robot Secretary has conjured up. He concedes, and listens to her, though he's still snotty about it. "I gave you every possible detail, what could you possibly have to bother me with?" And what she needs is for him to authorise a particular "trump card". See, someone's finally noticed the kids are missing (Arcade, in his infinite douchiness, is like "Already? My family didn't notice I went missing for months.") and it's the worst possible person. It's not a parent or teacher or spurned lover. It's Molly Hayes~

And indeed, our dear Molly is confronting Giant Man (Hank Pym, in case you weren't sure) at Avengers Academy over the fact that he promised they'd be safe. But she hasn't seen Nico or Chase in weeks, and that means bad guys stole them. Kid's fucking sharp, you see why she's my favourite? Karolina Dean and Julie Power (AKA Lightspeed of the former Power Pack) apologise to Hank, figuring Nico and Chase just ran off to do horny teenage things. Molly's still throwing a fit, though, and she pounds the ground hard enough to break it.

Karolina and Julie pull her off, continuing to apologise. See, Old Lace, the velociraptor Chase has a psychic bond with (seriously, read Runaways), is moping about and won't even eat. They figure if he was in actual danger, she'd be all on alert, but she clearly just misses him. Even so, Hank promises to try and look into it for the kids, and Molly gives him a kiss on the cheek as thanks, because she's a sweetie. As they're leaving, he asks when Nico and Chase went missing, and that's when the other shoe drops: it was three weeks ago, right after Christmas.

As Hank is next seen explaining to Tigra, sure, two teens running off, that wouldn't be so unusual. But the fact that they disappeared the same day several of their own Academy students (Mettle, Hazmat, Reptil, possibly X-23 and Juston as well) went off the radar, well... that's a bit suspicious, isn't it? Now, Mettle and Hazmat were 1) a couple, and B) not supported as such by Hazmat's parents, so they didn't think too much of it at the time. And they're also graduates of the Academy, not like they just left their rooms. But still, Hank wants to ask around to some of their friends.

There's a few cameos here. On the Academy grounds alone, he talks with students Finesse and White Tiger. The former, she drifted apart from both X-23 and Reptil, since she has difficulty with emotional closeness, and doesn't know where they are. White Tiger, meanwhile, also knew Reptil, but when he got focused on finding his parents, she gave him his space. She'd want the same if she got any leads on her own parents' deaths, after all. Likewise, some calls, and Wolverine reports none of his kids are missing (if anything, he wishes a few would, give him a moment's peace). He heard something from Captain Britain, though...

Indeed, the Braddock Academy also has a few students gone walkabout, but since they're the usual delinquents, he didn't think much of it. It isn't even the first time this particular group has left school grounds, they usually turn up on social media after a few days. He helpfully forwards a pic of Anachronism cupping the breasts on the Venus de Milo as an example. Captain Britain asks Hank if his campus has any security footage, and they do, of course. But Hazmat knocked it out before she left, and they haven't gotten it back yet. In fact, the only person who could get it up faster... is Juston Seyfert.

They call up Juston's father, who is now kind of incensed with them. He withdrew Juston from the academy for safety concerns (since Juston's only power was "owns a giant robot"), and doesn't want anything to do with them now. They just want to check, since several of their own students went missing, and Mr. Seyfert replies that Juston is fine, he's out playing with his brother right now. And we cut to a POV shot of Juston's brother, Chris, and it's clear that the POV is from a Life-Model Decoy. That is to say, a robot duplicate that looks human.

So Hank takes it to the top: SHIELD. He talks with Maria Hill about teleportation tech, and she shows him a map where teleportation signatures go off across the planet, including a signature from around Chase and Nico's place. However, she won't give more detailed info, because it's highly classified. She does give him one piece of info, though: a girl with Deathlok tech disappeared right around the same time. But she's accounted that one as a time travel thing, so it's not important to their investigation. ...Right?

So Hank's a bit stuck. He's got at least a dozen kids missing, no leads. (As far as he knows, Juston's accounted for, and Cammi, Red Raven, and Darkhawk aren't brought up at all.) He can't put the pieces together, there's no real connection, especially when places like the Jean Grey School and the Wakanda Academy haven't been hit. He's fretting himself sick, and Tigra and his other colleagues are beginning to get worried. And that's when Finesse comes in with a phone call for him. It's Mettle, asking to meet.

They figure obviously this might be a trap. But then Mettle pulls up at their designated meeting spot (which he picked, of course), and explains he did, in fact, elope with Hazmat (who of course didn't feel safe enough to come along) and he's lying low because her parents filed kidnapping charges. Hank runs a scan, confirming that Mettle's DNA, retinas, and voice all match, so he's not a Skrull (and Hank would know, having spent several months replaced by one back in Secret Invasion). But Mettle's iridium body is just too dense to run a deeper scan out in the open. Well, isn't that convenient~?

Mettle says he's glad they're missed, at least, and peels off again. Hank accepts that maybe he and Molly just have difficulty accepting change. And the whole time, Arcade is watching from his creepy little basement lair, gloating at how thoroughly he's tricked them. The fake Mettle was the previously discussed trump card, since his already metal skin hides the cybernetics well. And all of this means he'll prove himself a great villain and get respect, everyone will line up to suck his dick, blah blah blah. The issue ends with him being smug, and isn't that just a great way to come back to this series~?

While I do dislike this issue because it’s just more of Arcade being a smug smuggy-smug who has all the powers and is Teh Very Best Evar, I also really like it for the parts that aren’t that. Hank Pym may not be perfect or, like, anyone’s favourite hero. But here he is, moving heaven and earth to find a lead to track down these missing kids. And that, I certainly appreciate. i get the feeling that, despite being smug and douchey, Arcade didn’t cover his tracks as well as he thinks and this is all gonna come crashing back on him later. I can at least hope that’s the case~

Also, seriously, one last time: go read Runaways. Even the weaker arcs in later volumes are still better than this dreck~
