Things that Spark Joy-3x01

It has been a hot minute since I did one of these and I'm excited! There was some good stuff in this premier that I enjoyed and that I'm excited about. My more salty feelings can be found in the Things that did NOT Spark Joy post, so if you wanna climb into the salt mine with me, check that one out. Also this got long so the Michael/Alex stuff is under the cut. Okay, let’s dive in!

Liz:

I have been...less than excited about yet another tired love triangle but the Heath/Liz telenovela commentary while working cracked me up

bringing that same energy when Liz said she wanted to make his heart race again made me giggle.

I have missed righteously indignant Liz. I have some thoughts on her leaking that patent but I can’t say I blame Liz for that

Her knowledge of electric currents from working with Max 🥺

Heist/criminal Liz was so much fun!

Still got a feeling Heath is gonna be involved in something like Deep Sky and is trying to recruit Liz (helping her out of a jam/revealing personal information about his mom are a great way to earn her trust, just saying, +comments like “who hurt you” and he wasn’t trying to “ruin her” which are Max triggers. Also he mentioned if she was going to be a “mad scientist” to do it better, but there no reason to call her "mad” because what she did wasn’t about the KIND of research she was doing, so that all perked my ears up. Again, love triangles are 🙄 but I’m interested at least to see what’s going on with his character.)

Glad to see Liz is allowed to be angry for awhile this time as one of the major issues with season 1 was her forgiving Max too soon so they could be “together” in time for Max to die.

Kyle:

MY SWEET SON KYLE! So happy to see him!!

CA conference is a great way to make sure Liz has contact with Roswell, but also a great way to sweep that weird side plot from last season out of the way.

I have always loved their banter and Liz insisting that Kyle be Team Liz while feeing him a vending machine lunch was funny.

I’m a little ??? about him pushing her to move on because Max isn’t coming when he knows Max isn’t coming because he’s dying and Liz is going to be PISSED when she finds out he knew and didn’t tell her, but Kyle is SO GOOD about not breaking confidence which in a drama show is nice to see. Although with a show that already has a huge communication problem it might be helpful if SOMONE spoke up about stuff occasionally?

I’m hopeful this is kicking off a whole season of Kyle actually getting to be involved and interacting with everyone.

Kylex brotp scene! And Alex implies that this is something they do often so I’m very excited to see what else we get from them this season, especially with Alex bringing up Jim Valenti.

Also, as much as just “borrowing” an ambulance (especially if you’re not certified and insured to drive it) is probably not feasible, I’m giving the show a pass because Kyle deserves to be dramatic AF if he wants to while lecturing people who refuse to listen to him.

His little “I need to get a circle of people who can’t unlock doors with their minds” line was funny and I’m so happy to see SOMEONE bothering to tell him “thank you” for all the extra work he does for all of them. My Kybel feelings are baaaack!!

Rosa:

So happy to have her back in town and trying out different therapies to find what works for her, even if her mom is sending sketchy drugs through the mail, apparently. But maybe now that Rosa has her plans from last season to take down Jesse SOMEONE can explain what exactly her whole plot was at some point? Because I’m still so confused...

As for things that make me chuckle, Wyatt trying to argue that his painting was a cactus and not a penis by pointing out “There’s a flower on that testicle!” was up there, as was Rosa flat out telling Wyatt she must be Rosa’s ghost. Her little delighted “boo!” was so funny! More happy, shenanigan having Rosa please!

As for them going with Rosalinda and thinking no one would notice... Honestly? I don’t think most people would. If they’re pushing the “everyone here is pretty racist” card, I can see people making snide comments about how “of course” there were other cousins with similar names.

I have...concerns about where things are going in the storyline with her and Wyatt, but whoo boy that final scene was intense and Amber continues to deliver great performances. (But also where is Arturo? I miss him! And you’d think he’d have noticed all the banging/yelling/lights flickering. I just want him to be okay and be around!) And hey those mind-altering drugs from mommy saved the day I guess! And there were several syringes so is she going to keep dosing him? I am interested/scared to find out what happens here.

The Pod Squad:

I am LOVING the three of them going out together just to have fun and not because they are fighting some threat or coming to each other’s rescue.

Their little game in the mindscape was super fun and getting to see new powers from Max and Isobel and Michael working together to fight off Jones was great.

Vlamis broke my heart with Michael saying that despite all the other things going wrong in his life, he was happy because they were all getting along. Someone get that boy a stable support system, STAT!

So sad that Max and Michael are always on different pages when it comes to wanting to learn more and they’ve flipped from last season. I’m looking forward to them getting on the same page and working TOGETHER.

I’m wondering what Michael built that cage out of though because it definitely looks like the alien glass. Did he dismantle his console? Did he find a way to do it safely since apparently forcing it apart is...not suggested? Or did he just use the broken pieces from the previous cage which doesn’t explode when forced apart? I want to see more genius Michael!

They haven’t told anyone about him and given that Jones looks like Max, I can practically feel the shenanigans coming! Also, with the vision I think it’s interesting we are seeing a LOT of emotion from Isobel, but Alex is just pissed which makes me wonder if Isobel had a hand in the death and that’s why she’s so upset?

I still have mixed feelings about Max and his choices, but him listening to Liz’s voice as a comfort because he knows he won’t see her again before he dies got me. I am not immune to the soulmate feels 😭

But also, Liz was complaining about having nothing left of her research but Max did save some of it which is going to be another “Isobel thinking of Jones, ‘this is a super secret tool that will help us later!’” moment.

General note of fun, my dude Bert is back and I love him!

Michael:

I already talked about the sibling bonding, but we also got happy, sassy Michael in a soft sweater and I am LOVING it.

Michael fixing his hair in that window KILLED me! I know everyone is like, “why did he fix it and then immediately put his hat back on?!” but if you notice, his curls weren’t their normal springy selves and I feel like he took a look and was like, well crap! and put the hat back on. Which begs the question, did he know exactly when Alex was coming back, or just a general idea that was confirmed last minute because he didn’t look like he’d just showered or anything. Or did he sneak away from work just to welcome Alex home? No matter what, I’m going to go cry into a pillow now.

I love that Michael says he doesn’t want to fall back into old habits which means he has recognized where some of his issues are and is actively working on improving things for himself. Because he lists all the things that went wrong, but he was still happy because he had his family and he’s been making a concentrated effort to hold on to that happiness which is hard for someone like him who grew up how he did.

I gotta say I love when Michael lists things from the past year to “catch the audience up” on stuff, that he uses Alex’s name specifically but no one else’s, because Alex is the important thing going forward.

Michael giving a sarcastic “howdy partner” cracks me up. I love him so much!! But also, he’s been going through the Caulfield research (alone is sounds like 😭) and managed to build an alien power-canceling cage which is just further proof of his genius. More Science!Michael this season please! (With Alex making heart eyes about it!)

Alex:

HE LOOKS SO GOOOOOD!!!

If he doesn’t get to rip that statue down by the end of the season I’m going to riot.

I have other thoughts about f*rlex that will be in the other post but having it be casual and long distance and end quickly really settled at lot of the fears around how they were going to handle that particular storyline without totally undermining the soulmates story which we already had to deal with ALL of last season. I wasn’t totally pleased, but for Chris and Co having a huge mess to clean up and being stuck with this plot that should have ended last season, I think they did a decent job of not just ending it, but tying it into where Alex is going this season with Deep Sky

Speaking of, color me intrigued about what they need specifically Alex and his skills for, that would get him such a high entry level! I am crossing my fingers SO HARD for lots of BAMF, smart AF Alex this season. I just hope Michael is around to make heart eyes at some of it.

Also, the return of sassy Alex Manes! “babe, I’m a cold blooded mercenary” with the hand gestures and everything cracked me up! He is a bitch and I love him so much.

Kylex brotp gets a second mention because we were ROBBED of getting this last season. And again, Alex is looking so good!! I also like that, like Michael, he mentions a vague “cute guy” but no name because he was more attached to the idea of what something could be with a guy like Forrest, than the actuality. And I’m saying again, if the show doesn’t end with Alex making the choice to walk away into the sunset with Michael then what is even the point of anything?

I was prepared for the Vlamis Glassy Eyes thanks to that sneak peek, but I was NOT prepared for Tyler’s Glassy Eyes 😭😭😭 As much as things were casual he was still letting go of a possible future, and one that would probably be a lot easier than the one he’s looking at right now. But I love that this is something where he got to make the choice. Like, yeah Michael is obviously in the back of his mind since he mentioned aliens when discussing Deep Sky with Forrest, but there is no immediate threat towards him or Michael, nothing is forcing his hand, he takes his time and thinks about it and makes a choice. Influenced in part by his past, this past year shutting down his dad’s work, and Michael (and Max and Isobel), yes, but still a choice he was allowed to think about and make on his own, and I love that for him.

Overall there were a lot of things I enjoyed, and some things I’m still a little iffy about but willing to see where they go and what they do with them now that c*rina is gone. No Alex probably next episode which is a travesty, but I’m holding out hope episode 3 will give us Malex interacting FINALLY (it’s been 84 years) and I personally think that c*rina never being allowed to write another Malex scene sparks the MOST joy of everything. Queer Girl Rambles pt.1

(If you don’t like long stories that could be said in only a few sentences, skip this. It’s a winding road, so either get in the car and drive with me, or skip the party)

I’m a recently self accepted Queer person. I realized I was a homosexual a little over a year ago and it took a bit for me to be comfy with that. And then I decided I’d download the Her app. It was beginning of lockdown (although if you had asked me then I would have said it was mid lockdown, so I guess this qualifier doesn’t really matter), and I, as a socially out, but familial closeted person decided that talking to women on a dating app might give me a chance to spread my little gay wings.

It took about 20 minutes but a girl, let’s call her Hannah, messaged me. She was funny and actually held a conversation, and Hannah made it very very clear that she thought I was beautiful and that had COVID not been a thing, she would have asked me on a date.

I was shocked, delighted, and baffled. A woman? Liked me? I had never felt desirable before then. No one had ever actively pursued my attention before ~at least, in a respectful way~I was excited.

But here’s some things you’ve got to know. I am a college student. I am a college student who struggles with school. I am a college student who struggles with anxiety. I am a college student who’s main goal is to graduate with possible grades and this is her one try main focus. And most importantly I am a college student who is trying their best.

Sounds normal right?

I get busy, everyone does. Over the next week, Hannah and I seemed to be playing phone tag. One of us would respond, and then along while later the other would. Eventually we exchanged Snapchat’s.

Ok. More backstory...at the time I was taking summer classes, which is essentially a 3 month course jammed into a 4-6 week period. I was taking not only Physicsand Physics lab, but I was also taking Calculas. A class I had failed, in a normal term, twice already. My strengths are not in math or science but I had to take these to keep my graduation date from pushing back. For MANY reasons, it was one of the most anxiety ridden summers I’d ever had. But I handled myself. I’d gone to therapy a few years before, and I had some therapist sanctioned coping mechanisms, and some self taught ones. For example. Spoons. You have 20 spoons a day and you can spend them on whatever you like. Some tasks take more spoons than others, but you only get 20. So use them well. At the time, school was about 15 spoons. Staying closeted during a pandemic and social movements in a southern conservative home took up 4. Which left me about one spoon to spend. Most days this was spent laying on the floor with my puppies or attempting to keep in contact with my ride or die friends. Because that’s one of my self taught coping mechanisms, which may not be healthy or not. But when I reach my capacity, I shut out the world. I cannot respond to texts or calls or, anything. And at this point in my life, my friends understand that. If they don’t hear back from me, I don’t HAVE to worry about upsetting them( I mean I still worry but as I said. Anxiety). At the very least I can just text them spoons and they get it. I try to respond as fast as possible but sometimes things get pushed back a few days.

Anyway, back to the story. We had been snap chatting a bit, at least everyday, but it wasn’t the same. I began to notice that Hannah never seemed to talk about herself. I’d ask her questions about herself but I’d get very little information. And she’d quickly turn the convo back to me. And let me tell you. There is only so much of talking about my own life that I can do. I tried using convorsation starters or asking her opinions on things I had never experience but she had, and...still she gave little information and turned it back to me. It was frustrating, but I accepted it. Maybe she wasn’t as good a conversationalist as I first thought. And another thing I noticed was that she never seemed to be able to chat with me first. I was the one who had to initiate it first. One day I decided that I wasn’t going to message first. A few hours go by and I see on her story that she posted a meme about people not texting people. It seemed weird but I thought, no can’t be about me. The next week I tried it again. The meme was way more pointed and most could argue passive aggressive. I called her out on it, and told her if she wanted to talk to me, she didn’t have to wait for me to do it. She agreed said she’d do that. ~stage whispers~ she didn’t.

These passive aggressive story posts would continue for,gosh a half a year now. If I didn’t text her for a stretch there would be a post on her story about it. It got to a point where I wouldn’t open her stories or even Snapchat at all.

In December I got an internship, which is essentially a full time job and it’s expected I take night classes to accommodate this (it’s part of my major so it sounds crazy but I swear it’s normal). I was anxious and it’s been a huge learning curve. Throughout this time, I would off and on respond to her texts, I’d tell her how the internship was going all that jaz. But there would be days where my spoons we spent and most defiantly not on her. Her call out posts increased. My anxiety got real bad and her posts only made things worse. So eventually her messages sat in my inbox, unread, for 3 weeks. I contemplated never opening them. But I felt bad. I opened them and reexplained why I couldn’t answer in a timely mannor, apologized for the unintentional ghosting, and made it very clear that if she wished to continue texting me, that I couldn’t promis a prompt response. She said “don’t worry about it. I get it. Just remember to text me when you’ve got time!”

Last week J hit, and while Im still not comfy with what was going on in my job and life, I was mentally able to make a rare Snapchat story about getting to pick music at work.

I still didn’t have a lot of spoons to answer her, so her comment on my story sat untouched in my inbox till tonight.

Tonight I found the courage to leave a groupme of people I am no longer friends with. And I opened Snapchat to leave our Snapchat groupchat, when I began to think about Hannah. Because there on her story was another call out post. I had just left groupchat a of toxic people and yet here I was clinging to a girl who made me feel so bad about spending my spoons. Who could not, for whatever reason, have an adult behavior about her feelings and what she wanted and needed out of our “friendship”. I decided I’d remove and block her. I don’t need this in my life.

But her unopened messages were still there. I opened them. There on my screen was Hannah’s response to my week old Snapchat about picking music. The gist of the message? “Looks like your not to busy to post on Snapchat”

All my guilt and remorse flew out the window, and Hannah was immediately blocked from my life.

Why did I wait this long to boot her out? I think it’s because she was the first, and so far the only woman to show interest in me. And I was scared that by blocking her, I was giving up my proof of gayness. Her interest made me feel more valid in my identity.

But that’s the thing. My identity is MINE. And it took my first year of Gay to understand what that meant. I am queer. And that is not dependent on if someone of my sex finding me attractive. That is not dependent of somone giving me attention. I will not be giving others the power to hold my identity hostage anymore

re: the evan discussion and specifically how you mentioned how good and chill the fandom writes him; its so infuriating to watch people woobify the murderous capitalist and see the sympathetic (of course, as you said, POC and women) characters paid dust or straight up turned evil, and its so good to see someone finally speak on it. though, i do remember before the archives (like 2016-17 DBD), his backstory was retconned like 3 times. maybe thats the reason for the discrepancy in how hes seen?

Yeah, I really feel you anon. I’m glad you were able to find some commiseration with me. It’s like, I still would still hate it on principle, but it wouldn’t be so grating to me if just either like everyone got the same treatment, or it was less wide spread, but it is so tiring and not fun to see the rich white estate owner sadistic serial killer get woobified or a weird blanket pass very constantly while at the same time like, actually never did a thing wrong Lisa Sherwood is sitting covered in cobwebs in the corner full of pre-existing potential no one is making bank on.

According to a buddy of mine, it’s largely due to a fic that got popular that wrote him that way? But I know little of the old Trapper retcons so that could be a thing too. I’m like, a medium-old dbd fan, lol, I wasn’t here since the beginning, but I’ve been here a while now. Retcons and off the cuff comments made by disagreeing devs have def been behind wildly different takes before, although some heckn weird stuff like Entity Ace just seems to come out of the pitch black ether itself. (Also leave my boy Ace alone TuT he never did a thing wrong. Well. P much lol.) Sometimes huge things really can start with like, one joke a person tells, so who even knows with a lot of fan stuff.

There are a lot of things like this that do grate on me though. Like for real, I know I’ve said this before, but uh, not super chill that when the OG fandom decided to arbitrarily assign an OG killer to ship with an OG survivor, Claudette Morel got the deformed & feral one? (& Jake just got no one back then. Didn’t even get Sally, when she was added 4th. We can all do that character math ourselves pretty easy I think, and it’s. Yeah.) To this day, it’s still one of the biggest and only ships for her that get any attention, despite her being an OG and a wildly popular character. Nothing against Max, I like him and am very sympathetic to his backstory and actually would enjoy writing him more, but that’s still not super chill. (Also poor heckn Max. He gets so infantilized in portrayals often, as if his disabilities give him the mind of a child? which is still one of the biggest stereotypes for disabled people in media. : / ). And like, my good boy Joey has so much potential as a character, but appears in anything like maybe 1/20th as much as Frank (I like Frank, just where’s the justice in those #s?), and tho he’s chiller/nicer & like 2 or more years younger than Frank in canon, when he does get time, tends to get treated as more aggressive by far than his OG portrayal, while Frank often is jokey/light or woobified or twinkified. Joey also usually gets drawn super jacked and taller/bigger than his model, when he’s pretty close to the exact same size Frank is, and uh, neither of those trait interpretations alone but especially both together are not super chill.

Side note to end on bc this makes it sound like all I do is stare at the parts of this fandom that annoy me, I get fired up, but I wouldn��t be here if that was true. There’s so much amazing stuff here too. And like, man, I really love and appreciate it when I see artists and writers and fans portraying or even just having a great/passionate time talking about the characters, who aren’t like that. Which does happen. A lot. With maybe not as many people, but I’ve been lucky enough to find some super cool ones on here and in other places. It’s such a breath of fresh air and always makes me feel really good after. : ) (Also like shoutout to people who loved Julie pre-archives-spotlight? Bc she mostly was totally ignored, and I was always so happy when I saw somone who was like “This is not fair” and loved her so she wasn’t forgotten.) I’ve seen some really great work and follow some amazing dbd blogs I have and will keep on appreciating so much. If you’re reading this, whenever amount later doesn’t matter, and you make dbd stuff--not just like artistic content but including just gushy posts about characters you like and have fun going off about thoughts and feelings too--for one of the more forgotten female/disabled/poc list, I appreciate you. They deserve it. You’re doin’ the lord’s work. It’s a very happy thing to see. <3

Just Friends ~ We Both Made Mistakes (part 53)

Harper White is best friends with Luke Hemmings, they always have been. Not only is she friends with the rockstar, but with the rest of 5 Seconds Of Summer, as well as a really nice girl named Erika.

Harper has a few secrets, she can play all the instruments the boys play and many more. It’s a talent she has kept hidden, only very few people know.

What will happen to the six teens, wondering around the world together?

It’s been 7 weeks since Harper’s been in the hospital, she squeezed my hand three times last week, and since then she’s done it twice, one to Calum and one to me. She squeezed Calum’s hand three days ago, and it made the biggest smile appear on his face, the first proper smile we’ve all seen in such a long time. Then a day after that she squeezed my hand again, which warmed my heart all over again.

It is one of the best feelings in the world. Think of receiving fantastic news, cover it in sugar and double it. When you see somone that looks exactly like a statue, and they show you some life, it feels electric, and it brings you back to life.

Yesterday her right leg twitched, it went on for quite a few seconds and the whole room just froze and stared at her. The doctor said it was relatively normal, so I didn’t question and took it as a good sign.

“Hi.” I say as I walk into Harper’s room, being met with a crying Sarah and Erika. “What’s up?” I warily question.

“We w-were just going back on m-memories of Harper, and I gu-guess it just all got too much.” Erika sobs and it hurts to see.

“Come here.” I gesture with my head and open my arms to her.

She gets up and walks towards me, burying her head into my chest, and I run my hand up and down her back. “It’s gonna be okay.” I reassure.

“How is it Luke?” She asks. “Our bestfriend is as lively as a doll. I mean, she’s your ex girlfriend!”

I try and pretend it doesn’t hurt when she says ex girlfriend, I don’t want her to be my ex anything.

“It’s gonna get better, it always has to, life has to progress, it can’t stay in one spot for the rest of time. It may be slow for everything to progress, but everything has to change, it’s inevitable. And you might lose people on the way, but people will come and go, but that’s also how you make progress.” I say.

“But I don’t want to lose her.” She exclaims.

“I know, none of us do, but to be honest, I don’t think she wants to be around us anymore, not because she doesn’t like you guys anymore, but because this all hurts too much, and brings back many painful memories. That might not happen, but it’s what I’m guessing is gonna happen. That is all gonna hurt, it will, it’s going to hurt all of us, because we’ve lost one of our bestfriend, but she was in our life for a reason, and maybe her time in our friendship is up. We’ll eventually move on, and I know it will be hard for Harper too, because she sees us all as siblings, and letting go of people is never going to be easy. Whether it’s because of the history, the length of time you were friends for, the memories you made with that person, a particular experience you had, or if they were simply in your daily routine, it’s hard to let go of the people you love, but sometimes you have to, sometimes it natural, and sometimes your bring it on yourself. You’re always gonna go through people, it’s natural, and sometimes the person you lose is the one you least expect it to be. Maybe you planned out the future with that person, but all you’re left with is metaphorical shredded pieces of paper. You may try to tape it back together, but the pieces are too small to repair, so then you’re forced to find a new person and get a new sheet of paper.” I sigh sadly at the double meaning,

“I’m sorry for crying.” She apologises and wipes her eyes.

“It’s okay to cry, you need to, or you’ll have all these pent up emotions, that’ll eventually flood, and you’re left with an even bigger mess than when you started off.”

I should really take my own advise.

“Thanks Luke.” She smiles appreciably.

“Anytime.” I say and give her one more squeeze before letting go. “Are you okay?” I ask Sarah.

“Yeah, I will be.” She sadly nods and I give her a quick hug.

“Has anything new happened to her?” I question.

“No, not at all.” Sarah sighs.

“She’s gonna be okay.” I assure her.

“How do you know?” She asks with a sniffle.

“Because Harper is so damn strong, she wouldn’t wake up for herself, she’d wake up for the people around her. She puts others first most of the time, and puts herself last, which isn’t quite right, but some people are like that I guess. But she’d wake up for you, for the people she loves. Sometimes that can be her greatest fault.”

“Do you really think so?” She gingerly asks.

“I know so.” I look down at my shoes.

Walking around Harper’s bed and into the red chair next to her bed.

“Do you ever doubt your abilities because you didn’t notice she was this bad?” I blurt out.

“Every fucking night. I’m her mother for god sake, does this make me a bad mother? Do I even know my daughter any more?”

“That’s the thing, all these feelings are invisible, there isn’t a pin you put on your clothes everyday that displays your mood/mental state. You try to look for signs, what there body language is like, or what there eyes are like but the more you feel, the better you are at hiding them.” I sadly say.

“You hear about these things, but when it happenes to you, I guess you don’t know how to feel.” Sarah confesses. “Do I just cry all the time? Stay strong for everyone else?”

“It’s okay to feel confused, maybe you’re still in shock of why she’s actually here.” I suggest.

“Yeah, I suppose. It was just so unexpected, she’s never actually tried to take her own life before. She’s put herself in danger before, but never actually attempted to, at least that I know of.”

“There’s not any other times that I know of either. Last year back in March or April, when she ended up in hospital, I thought I’d lost her forever. I just had this gutted feeling, that she was gone. The image of her lying on the floor, still haunts me to this day. That was one of the worst times in my life, not only were we on a break, but I wasn’t there to save her. Not that I need to save her all the time, but she was beyond the point of repair by herself, she needed someone, anyone.”

“I’ve blocked anything to do with that out. When she was 15 and Andrew left us, I blocked that out too, mainly because it was us that caused that. We were always fighting, and when he properly left she was a mess, and I always blamed myself even more, every time I saw a new bandage, I used to stay up crying every night, not just because my husband left me, but because a part of me was causing her hurt. It was mainly Andrew that caused the most hurt, but if we didn’t fight so much he wouldn’t of left, that’s what I was telling myself at least. Then when she was nearing 17, I left her, because I couldn’t handle the memories, and I hated myself for it, she could’ve relapsed and I wasn’t there, her brother’s weren’t there either, she was on her own, she had you and the others, but it wasn’t proper family.”

We’re all in Harper’s hospital room, it’s a little tight, a few of us are sitting down, but most of us are standing, Andrew and Sarah are down in the cafeteria right now though, they should be back in a while. Ashton hasn’t been here in quite a few days, which is fine, it’s not compulsory to be here all the time, but I’m kinda worried about him, I’ve spent most of my time here, so I haven’t been their to check on him. I think Calum went over the other day, and said he was just really sad but it’s not anything to be worried about, so I’m taking his word for it.

When seeing everyone so down, I just wanna fill us all with false hope and tell everyone it’ll be okay. It’s not going to do anything but give you false excitement for the future.

“How the fuck does it grow that fast?” Erika asks.

“Well she was crafted by angels so anything is possible.” Maddie says.

“Ahem.” Erika coughs.

“You’re my one and only babe, but she’s my true love.” Maddie teases.

Now I know how the others felt when Harper and I were dating, we were so gross, but I loved it.

I take a seat on the chair next to Harper’s bed, holding her hand in mine.

“Remember when you made out with Harper?” Michael questions Erika. “That was fucking hot.”

“Which time.” Erika winks.

“When you admitted your feelings for her.” Calum says.

“You were in love with Harper?” Maddie questions.

“Wow, the weather today is awful.” Ashton comments.

“I’m actually quite hungry, does anybody want to get some food with me?” Calum asks whilst Michael just whistles with his hands behind his back, looking around.

“Yeah I’ll go get some food with you, Cal.” Erika agrees.

“Not so fast.” Maddie huffs.

“Have I ever told you how much I love you? You look really nice today, by the way. Where is your shirt from?” Erika attempts to change the subject.

“Actually it’s from a thrift store, it’s gorgeous isn’t it, I w- Erika!” Maddie realizes what she tried to do. “Tell me what happened.”

“I was kinda in love with Harper for like 2 years, at least a year.” Erika admits.

“What?” Maddie asks stunned.

“Yeah, I kissed her whilst she was going out with Luke, but she obviously didn’t like me back. She was the person that made me properly realize my sexuality.” Erika explains.

“You were actually in love with her?” Maddie questions.

“Yeah, but I fell for you faster!” Erika tries to save it.

“When did you actually make a move.” Maddie questions.

“Well I tried to make a move the whole two years, but it was around this time last year, maybe in May, I can’t quite remember.” Erika shrugs.

“We met in late May, so you were still in love with her when we started dating.” Maddie joins the pieces together.

“It’s not a big deal, I got over her in a couple months, it’s fine.” Erika informs.

“How is it even remotely fine? You were in love with another girl when we first started dating.” Maddie exclaims. “Why didn’t you tell me?!”

“Because I didn’t need to.” Erika replies.

“Ohhhh shit.” Michael quietly says to us boys.

“Yes, you kinda did, I wouldn’t of rushed into things so fast of I knew that.” Maddie tells her.

“It only meant you could be with me for longer. It hasn’t affected our relationship in anyway.” Erika points out.

“Who were thinking about when we went on our first date? Who were you thinking about when we shared our first kiss? Who were you thinking about when we had sex for the first time? Who were you thinking about when we would block out the world from my bedroom? Who were you thinking about when we said our first ‘I love yous’?”

“You for god sake. It’ll always fucking be you-”

Erika gets cut off by Harper letting out a long groan and squeezing my hand.

“She’s squeezing my hand.” I say

Harper makes all these other groans and then starts crying, but she hasn’t opened her eyes, her chest is heaving up and down, her grip on my hand is quite weak but it’s there.

“Harper?” I ask, my voice shaking a little.

All of a sudden her eyes begin to slowly open, then close again, then open up again.

“Luke?” Her weak voice asks.

“Yeah.” I confirm, slightly anxious on how she’ll react.

She looks at me as if she’s in pain, not physically, I’m not really sure what type, an just looks like she’s in pain.

I place my hand on her neck, my thumb rubbing up and down on her jawline.

“Where am I?” She shakily asks.

“You’re in the hospital.” As I tell her, I press the button by her bed to alert someone.

“Am I okay?” She questions.

“I don’t know.” I truthfully tell her.

Harper starts full blown sobbing, clutching onto my arm for life. Whenever I see her cry it hurts me, whether it’s because she’s in physical or emotional pain, it’ll always hurt me to see her in such a vulnerable state.

“Harper, Harper, it’s going to be okay, I promise.” I say.

“You promise?” She sobs.

“I promise.” I nod.

As if on cue, two nurses walk in, looking like they’re on a mission.

I move out the way and they begin to fuss around her, which makes Harper looking distressed, but she keeps her eyes on me, not exactly on my eyes, but she studies my person.

After a while, the nurses and a doctor are finished expecting her, and they turn to us.

“She seems to be doing alright, she’s responding absolutely fine, it’s almost too good to be true. We’ll check on her soon, but she needs rest, people who suffered from brain injuries tire very easily, so rest is crucial. I do advise you talk to her a little though, then try and get her to go to sleep. Someone needs to keep an eye on her at all times, just in case anything happens.” The doctor explain to all of us. “Alright, thanks for your help.” Calum nods.

“Anytime, you should probably inform her parents about her awakening.”

“Oh yeah.” I mumblw and quickly pull my phone out of my pocket, before leaving the room because of the noise.

Sarah picks up on second call, and I’m not really sure how to say this.

“Hey.” I say.

“Hello.” Her fake cheery voice travels through the phone.

“So uh, I’m not really sure how to say this, but um, Harper has wo-”

“Luke, Harper wants you, she won’t stop crying.” Calum cuts me off.

“It’s blatant favouritism.” Michael jokes.

“Uh, okay, can you tell Sarah then?” I ask.

“Of course.” He nods and I pass him my phone.

I give him an appreciated nod and walk back into the room.

Michael is sitting next to Harper’s bed, whilst holding her hand as she cries into his shoulder.

Michael says something to her and she looks up at me, and Michael and I swap places.

“Guys, let’s give them a minute.” Ashton gestures towards the door.

I smile at them before turning my attension to Harper.

“Hey.” I say.

What am I supposed to do? Would it be awkward if I pulled her into a hug?

I pull her into an embrace, and cautiously rub up and down her side. “It’s okay.” I attempt to reassure.

“How? In what way is it fine?” She questions.

“Just calm down and we’ll talk.” I tell her.

Harper continues to cry into my shoulder, sobbing hysterically, whilst I sit here helpless, not knowing what to do. I’m not even exactly sure why she’s crying, I’m only assuming it’s because this is all so overwhelming.

After 10 minutes or so, she begins to calm down, she’s still clutching onto me, and I’m still holding onto her.

“Talk to me, babe.” I encourage.

“Why am I here? How long have I been here?” She asks.

“You’ve been here for around 7 weeks, and you’re here because you uh got hit by a car.”

She’s got a guilty look on her face, and I’m getting this feeling that she knows why she’s here.

“Wait, what about school?” She furrows her eyebrows and slightly panics.

“Your mum called them and they wished you a speedy recovery.” I tell her.

“Are you disappointed in me?” She blurts out,

“Not at all, just worried.” I confess,

“I’m disappointed in me.” She sighs.

“You shouldn’t be, Harper. You were feeling things, and sometimes these feelings overflow and get the best of you.”

“I know you blame yourself.” Harper declares.

“I’m not gonna deny it.” I shrug.

“It was my decision, I decided not to move, you didn’t put me there, it was my choice.”

“Are you happy with your choice?” I warily question.

“I’m not exactly thrilled about how it ended, I’ll tell you that.” She bluntly states.

“Why? Do you really not want to be alive any more?” I ask.

“Now I have to face everyone and they are gonna be walking on eggshells around me, they know exactly what I did, and are never gonna look at me the same way again. Not only that, but I’ve got myself in a place where it’s so dark, and some how I’ve got to get myself out. I’ve got to deal with this and don’t want to, I hoped I didn’t need to, I hoped I didn’t need to think about anything else again.”

“So you really don’t want to be living anymore? You don’t want to grow up and have a future? You don’t want to move in with your partner one day? You don’t want to get engaged to your partner one day? You don’t want to have children with your significant other? You don’t want to watch your children grow up? You don’t want to grow old with the person you love? You’ve got a whole life ahead of you, it’s too special to throw away. I bet you one day you are going to be glad you survived, because you may of missed a particularly stunning sunset, you might of missed a concert you’ve been dying to go to since you were 18, you might of missed the opportunity to meet a new friend who you will make some fantastic memories with. You will of missed all these things that don’t even show a candle to the other things in life, but when you are experiencing these moments you are going to be glad you stayed alive to see them.”

“I want to experience these things, but it won’t be with the right person, it all comes back to one person.” She quietly responds after a minute of silence. “I guess we both made stupid choices.”

I'm an older full-time college student and my husband works full-time at Walmart. In the past three years, I've been through 4 cancer related surgeries, which were paid for by the breast/cervical cancer Medicaid program. Unfortunately, follow up care and monitoring aren't covered and I was dropped from Medicaid. I'm now on my husband's health insurance, which is basically worthless because our income is under $20,000/yr and the policy has a $4500 deductible plus 20% after. I haven't seen my oncologist for over a year because we can't afford the expensive scans, biopsies, and lab work associated with cancer follow-up with a deductible that high. I thought my situation would change in 2014 with Obamacare. I recently learned from the healthcare.gov website calculator that our income is low enough to qualify for expanded Medicaid (which our state decided not to expand), but I don't qualify for the health insurance subsidies I desperately need because the outrageous deductible health insurance from my husband's job covers spouses. How can a couple with an income so low they would qualify for expanded Medicaid be ineligible for subsidies? I am completely devastated over this and I don't know what to do. Not being able to afford cancer follow up care is putting my life in danger. Even if my husband's employer (Walmart) quit covering the spouses of full-time employees, I think that would only apply to new hires because of the grandfather clause. If getting subsidies was based on income alone the way it should be instead of access to employer provided coverage, I would qualify for a zero deductible policy and $3 co-pays with a monthly premium of around $60. I could then afford the expensive health care I need. We live in a college town so if my husband got a different job, he'd make even less than he does now and we would probably end up homeless. If my husband transfers and we move to a state that's expanding Medicaid, I'll have to quit school and get rid of my German Shepherd and Siberian Husky since it's almost impossible to find a landlord that allows them. We thought another option might be to get a divorce on paper and co-habitate until our situation changes (completing my degree and getting a good job so I can afford the deductible), then re-marry. When I asked about that, someone actually accused me of wanting to commit fraud! How can anyone think of something like fraud when a situation is endangering someone's life? During this time I found someone who bought my bike from me so I no longer required the insurance and disregarded the agreement(contract) never returned it or anything. I assumed they would cancel it upon not receiving any contract and payment,but 6 months later, today, they called me claiming the full amount or they will take me to court/collections. They have no paper whatsoever signed from agreeing to their terms. What should I do ?""

I'm a 20 year old male (or will be in April) and am needing help finding a good car insurance deal. So far, I have used LoveMoney.com to get my car insurance as it's returning costs of around 1400 as-a-pose to over 2000 on comparethemarket.com etc. Although I am looking for 0.8 - 1.1L cars, the insurance is ridiculous and the fact that I have pass plus doesn't make a blind bit of difference. Does anybody know of any cheaper ways to get cheaper car insurance? and as an estimate do you know what the approximate monthly cost would be for a quote around 1400? unfortunately it doesn't state it on the quote.
