West End Cast Change

Alright lots of exciting news today. I was going to reply to asks individually but looks like they're all like the same few questions so for convenience....megapost. Principal costumes/general notes - The principal costumes have been standardized for a while now and shouldn't have any significant design differences. - The UK has been standardizing the boots to all be one thick strap (two buckles) with the exception of Cleves who of course gets the thigh highs. - Reca Oakley and Gabriella Stylianou are both returning from former NCL contracts. They should both get new costumes. Gabriella's is rather old now and doesn't match the style of any other current Seymour. Reca's is fairly standard for the North American/NCL productions, but it isn't rigged for the Cleves reveal which means she should get new. Swing costumes The incoming swings have been announced as - Meg Dixon-Brasil for the West End - Natalie Pilkington as universal, which means she'll be based in the West End but travel to the UK Tour to provide coverage as needed The very obvious costume assignments are that Meg gets silver and Natalie gets black. The current UK Tour does not have anyone in black alt, which allows Natalie to seamlessly go back and forth without any concerns about duplicate costumes. Those assignments are also flattering on each of them, respectively, and Natalie was previously black alt during her time as UK Tour swing (and Bliss 1.0 even before that). As for what costumes Natalie will wear....she does have a previous black alt costume that she wore for the UK Tour. It was a reused top, reused shorts, new pants, and new Cleves zippered jacket (non-reveal). She'll likely wear that, reusing a few of those pieces but get replacements here and there. Probably gets an Aragon/Howard skirt as well. I also think it's likely that she'll re-wear her principal Seymour and Parr costumes from the UK Tour, although I'd expect that they'll generally keep them in the West End and not always have her bring them to Tour (with the exception of special occasions). Assuming she does reuse those, she wouldn't get the black Seymour variation. There is a small chance that Natalie keeps her pink alt and Seymour/Parr costumes. This seems unlikely - harder to transport, less flexibility, risk of double pink - but knowing Six it's not impossible. If this is the plan, presumably one of the West End alts would get black instead of pink.

Alternate costumes To me the most exciting factor is that they finally scrambled around the covers again!!! This is the first time since the current alternate system has been implemented that they're breaking the standardized A/C, B/H, S/P, to: Gabriella Stylianou as alt. Aragon/Seymour Naomi Alade as alt. Boleyn/Cleves Hannah Lowther as alt. Howard/Parr They're keeping the same system of principal costumes for first covers (already seen some of them in progress). But their alternate costumes for second and third covers are up in the air. Historically... - teal alternate was designed for Boleyn/Cleves, but also became standard for B/H, B/S/H, and S/H/P as first covers. Under the standardized alternate system, it's been used for Aragon/Cleves first covers which means they're wearing it for B/S/H/P. - orange alternate was designed for Aragon/Parr but also became standardized for S/P and once for A/C. Under the standardized system, it was used for A/S/C/P. - pink alternate was designed for Aragon/Howard and used for A/B/C/H, both prior to lockdown and with the recent standardization. - and I know I mentioned the (small) possibility that Natalie keeps her pink and an alt gets black above, but that's so minute and adds too many factors to consider, so for the sake of this post I'm just going to assume that's not happening. With this cast, my best guess is: - Gabriella in teal (will be worn for B/C/H/P) - Naomi in pink or orange (will be worn for A/S/H/P) - Hannah in orange or pink (will be worn for A/B/S/C) Gabriella's covers all fit neatly within teal so that feels fairly simple (although nothing ever is with Six and it could wind up totally different!). Naomi and Hannah both feel a little more complicated. I'd lean towards Naomi pink and Hannah orange - they feel more likely and better suited to them/the roles. But in terms of the costumes themselves, they've generally really avoided pink for S/P and Naomi does cover both, while Hannah only covers S. If they really want to avoid pink S/P as much as possible, there's a chance Hannah gets it. It ultimately comes down to what factors they're prioritizing. I'm very curious to see where they land! My personal hopes, with varying degrees of likelihood: - a changed variation for orange/teal/pink. please Ms Slade I'm begging you. - Naomi wearing braids for her roles, just like Zara MacIntosh did. - Thao Therese Nguyen getting green highlights like the South Korean queens did. Six has really diversified their Boleyn hair/wig designs recently to better reflect the individual queens' hair/cut/style. Since Thao often has brightly dyed hair I think this would be a really fun spot to add that individuality for her! I'd also like to see Naomi with green highlights if this is the case, but since she's alt it's less likely and I'd rather braids. - Janiq Charles getting to incorporate twists in her hairstyle, potentially something similar to Paisley Billings'. - Meg getting the Boleyn variation for silver alt. This is unlikely but I'd love for it to happen anyway (Esme Rothero seems to have been a special case, which I wrote about here)

Questions and thoughts

So, rereading all the chapters some questions cane to mind. I really hope i remember all of them but if not then I'll just send another ask.

I need to know more about hybrid laws and hybrids in general in the world you created. What i gathered until now is that they can't walk without their version of collars and microchip (hybrid ID) and that's kinda the only thing that twigged as law to me. Oh and that they are not allowed to work. What are other laws? Also you'd think that if they were created with the intention of house pet that can talk, wouldn't they only create non-exotic hybrids? But i guess that the exotics are made with the purpose of entertaining the rich. As you said hunting them, maybe sexual desires? Or how Jin was in the circus.

Back to their adoption. Can i ask what everyone was thinking in a few words? Like they new they were going to that rich guy but boom random 23-24 year old girl pops in Hi I got you babes! I'd ask you if you could make a small drabble but I'm too impatient 🤣😭. I was thinking about it and I feel like JK probably thought Oh nice I'm not dying yet but I'm gonna go to a sex house yuhuu.

Scenting! From what I understood all hybrids do it. Please tell me it's not as sexual as the 7 of them make it out to be 😭 Not that i don't enjoy it because that is more hot than a sex scene in my opinion. But i can't imagine Daisy doing it😭😭😭

Let's say for the fun of it Hoseok gets together with Alice. He will want to scent her too. Will he stop scenting Y/N? Will she have to give him to Alice in documents and stuff?

Now relationship wise. Do you plan for them to have a poly relationship or more of a open relationship? Because I don't see any of the boys falling in love with each other but that might be just me.

And now a few random questions. How the fuck does JK get dressed with the antlers? How is Y/N so rich because i want to be rich too? How good is that hearing and smell of theirs because I'd be to anxious to have any bodily functions? (In moments like this it would be nice if girls actually pooped rainbows and farted roses ngl😭) Would it be alright after you finish this if i print it out and make it an actual book?

For the laws... In Trouvaille, adopted hybrids end up getting an ID card to indicate their adoption status, rather than a collar or a microchip. The only forms of legal "employment" is working with the National Parks, like Jimin, and being circus/zoo performers, like Seokjin. Everything else is a sort of under the table operation or even exploitation-- think Yoongi, his mother and he were favored by a nightclub owner and were permitted to live and work there prior to being adopted. Taehyung, on the other hand, was created and exploited at a logging plant for his labor. I haven't come up with any other laws within this universe, yet, but we'll see as time goes on if any more pop up 😉 As for the creation of exotic hybrids, in the past, they were seen as flashy companions to the rich. In the present, they're either adopted by elites who wish to hunt for sport, or because of their superior strength compared to, say, a rabbit hybrid, to be workhorses illegally. Third, for circuses/zoos, like Seokjin.

HA okay they were probably all mad confused when Y/N showed up to adopt them... I think distrustful would be a word that comes to mind for Jeongguk, Namjoon, and Taehyung. Seokjin was too weak to properly react, and grieving over the fact that he didn't know what happened to Hannah. Hoseok and Jimin were just relieved to get the fuck out of there LMAO... and Yoongi, we now know already knew Y/N, and was probably hoping she was just there for him. I'm CRYINGGGG you're so right about Jeongguk thinking something like that, like the world they live in, it would make sense for someone to adopt them all to abuse :(

Scenting: Definitely not an inherently sexual act like the boys made it with Y/N 💀 While most of them are oblivious to Y/N's deeper feelings towards them, they can most definitely smell her attraction to them, and I think that's what triggers them to become menaces... As for Daisy, I picture the way her scenting Ben/Roy as childish nips to the wrist, like a toddler biting her dads, essentially. 💜

Even if Hoseok was to become romantic with Alice, he wouldn't scent her. That act is reserved for adoptive guardians! I don't see Y/N ever giving him up, either, nor would Hoseok want to leave his home.

The relationship is like you said, kind of an open relationship sort of situation. It's sort of unconventional, but I think they'll end up making it work 🥺

fdjksafsd good question about Jeongguk and his shirts! He often wears button downs and concert tees with loose collars. I think after years of having those antlers of his, he's learned how to maneuver things like hoodies over them in a specific way. LMAO I know Y/N has that MONEY! I think her family is old money, her maternal grandfather started an unspecified company, and her dad was an innovator of hybrid cardiology surgery.... she was pretty much born into it 💀 Lucky girl!

Their sense of smell and hearing is excellent, but not God-tier! I think behind several closed doors and whatnot they wouldn't be able to hear someone blowing up the toilet, or smell it, even 😭💀

Seriously darling, there's no other boy that will take such good care of you, as Kuramochi will. I trust 100% that he'll cherish you like the princess you are.

Were you named after anyone? Only in the sense that there's a character in the Bible named Hannah. But no. I don't even know that that's where my parents got it from. My parents were kind of intense about their kids not sharing initials and not being named after people so we could ~have our own identities~.

When was the last time you cried? Genuinely, not sure. I cry pretty easy, so there's like...no use even making note of it. It's been a long time since I cried hard enough to have a migraine, but just tearing up or gently crying over a song/book/tv show is pretty standard. I'm soft as butter tbh.

Do you have kids? I have two stepkids that are college age. They're pretty great! Beyond that, I have no desire for more kids, especially not anyone of my own body. I love taking care of babies though and will absolutely dote on my siblings kids.

Do you use sarcasm a lot? I don't think I do? I think because a few of my siblings are definitely on the autism spectrum, my family was just really accustomed to direct communication and I expect that.

What sports do you play/have you played? Unless we're counting dance and gymnastics, not a single solitary one. I was not an athletic team sports kind of kid. I wanted to be left alone with my books.

What's the first thing you notice about someone? I'm assuming we're speaking in person, in which case height and smell. I'm really short and I'm really sensitive to heavy perfumes. (Also my wife keeps calling me a super smeller in general because I get weird if she changes her deodorant or shampoo or body wash.)

Eye color? Very dark brown.

Scary movies or happy endings? 😂😂😂 Happy endings. I tend to avoid things that don't end happily. I've also seen MAYBE five scary movies in my whole life.

Any special talents? No. I mean, I read super fast. I can do a few different needlework craft things. And I have a nearly sociopathic ability to seem competent and professional in job interviews. But I don't think any of that counts. (Oh and I can remember the absolute fuck out of names.)

Where were you born? central east Texas.

What are your hobbies? I read. A. Lot. I also cross stitch and started getting into embroidery. Sometimes my hobby is me being hyperfocused on a video game for weeks on end (aka Operation Fuck Cullen in DA Inquisition). Once in a blue moon, my hobby will be writing (I wrote almost 300k words of fic in 2019 and haven't written a word since really). I indulge in the act of viewing sporting events. Can being hyperfocused on a TV show count? I do that too. I wish any of my hobbies included exercise. But they don't.

12. Do you have any pets? I have three cats! Littermates Luther and Lagertha are 10ish years old and Pandora is 9.

13. How tall are you? 5'2"

14. Favorite subject in school? In pre-University years it was anything English or History and then in University I liked all my math classes because they were straight forward.

15. Dream job? To make what I make now as a library technician again. I loved working in the library, especially in the back, ordering books and placing them in circulation and all the other extremely tedious collection maintenance. But those guys make like ...a third of what I make now. So it's just unreasonable. Makes me sad. Otherwise, I would pick something menial like data entry. But again, can't afford to do that.

🌈is there a fic that you worked *really fucking hard on* that no one would ever know? maybe a scene/theme you struggled with?: i’m super prone to falling down the too-much-research hole, so even something really short/fluffy like feel the ground beneath my feet turn into the sky had multiple hours spent reading stuff on ink and paper composition that ended up being... almost completely irrelevant 🤣 in terms of scenes and themes, my postcanon-grogleth series was definitely my most challenging. honestly my biggest weakness as a fic writer is that i can’t write a believable romance to save my life, and these two stories... are that. it was easier for me to write about everyone wrestling with grief than it was to write even a little pining, i’m just not good with it. it was also my first try at re-writing a fic from a different pov, so it was a big challenge to decide which moments to mirror and which to step away from.

🤍what's one fic of yours you think people didn't "get"?: y’know, i can’t really think of one! i feel like my work is pretty straightforward and i haven’t had anything get really misunderstood before. i guess in general, once in a while people leave (very kind!) comments wanting something like what i’ve written to happen in canon - when that is never my goal as a writer. i don’t write stories that i want to see in whatever actual canon, i write things i want to have in my own version of it. if that makes sense? like, i didn’t write now this story was when swords were humble because i wanted cr to put out a fictional textbook, and i didn’t write most agitated hands, be my salvation because i wanted supergiant to add a knitting minigame to hades. i just wrote them because i wanted to have those things for my own imagination.

👐what do YOU get out of writing?: it’s 1000% the “i want to read this so i have to write it” feeling. i love comments and i love attention, but the primary reason i write is so i can go back later and reread my stories :P that being said i also go back and reread my whole ao3 inbox whenever i’m sad so. the outside validation does help.

💌share something with us about an up-and-coming work (WIP) that has you excited!: one thing about me is i have 183928493 WIPs at any given moment and i am excited about all of them. i’ve been having a lot of fun lately with a d&d-au for legally blonde characters that’s half very silly half the kind of awful realization that desire can be (i promise it’s not as pretentious as it sounds). i’m finally getting close to done on a dragon age:origins fic that’s been on the burner for about two years and that’s a super fun feeling!! i’m indulging in a woke-up-married pikelan vegas au that no one needs which has lead to a very nostalgic playlist (when waking up in vegas is the first song it can only be good). i've decided to actually break into andor fic and am currently working on a 'they should make this marriage worse by involving a third party' fic that's very 'i hate you so much'/'you wanna fuck me so bad it makes you look stupid also i hate you too'. and i’ve been working on now is the season again, which is entirely ‘haven’t you ever just wanted to destroy’ being narratively rewarded.

After such a long and exhausting day. It feels so good to come home and throw myself in my comfortable bed.

As I exit the elevator and enter the penthouse I was welcomed by my nanny or you can say she is my second mother who always treats me like her own daughter. I love her so much.

"What's that fragrance? Hmm, what are you making Mrs Smith?" I ask her while kissing her cheeks. She laughs and kisses my forehead as she always does.

"Oh dear, you look tired. How's the work at the office?" While she was cooking I tried to steal some pieces of cherry tomatoes but she hit my hands and said " No, first go to your room and change." I sign and say " ok fine I am going". As I turn around she asks again " You didn't reply to my question Isabella how's the work, did you find him?".

"Let me change first then I will answer your every question." She replied hmm. Then I walk towards my room and take a long hot shower. It feels so good after a long day.

I changed into some comfortable clothes and went towards the dining room. I saw Mrs Smith already sitting. I also sit and she started serving the food on my plate.

"Do you know why I am here?" Mrs Smith asked. I started rubbing my eyes. And replied, " Yes, And the answer to those questions is yes I am tired, Everything is great in the office and third No I still don't know where he is".

" I know Bella you need a break but you have to find him you know what he has done he…" I cut her and said in my serious voice " I know what he has done and I will find him." I look at her and say " don't worry let's finish the dinner ok" she nodded and then we started talking randomly about things.

After dinner, I went to my office to finish some paperwork because it was important. Then suddenly my phone vibrated and it was a message sent by an unknown number.

I opened that message and noticed that I was added to some stranger's group chat. After talking to them I got to know that there is a girl whose name is Hannah and she is missing. And at the end of this conversation, they asked for help and I decided to help.

No, I am not a fallen angel who helps everyone but the fact is that my life is boring right now so why not. When everyone went offline I decided to finish my work.

After completing my work I checked my phone and I found a private chat between Dan and Jessy but it was nothing important. Then someone messages me again he asks me if I like that he makes it possible for me to read private chats. You know it's so cool. Then he suddenly video calls me and rejects the call two times but he still calls the third time.

I decided to accept the call but I quickly put my finger on my phone's camera to cover it. The way he talks makes my heart beat fast. I can't take my eyes off the screen. Everything in that video is so mind-blowing. There's a guy wearing a hoodie in a dark room behind him. Many screens show binary numbers. After a few minutes, he ends the call. He also tells me how I can hack Hannah's cloud. In the end, he gave a little threat.

What are his exact words " Don't tell anyone I am serious". I don't know why I laugh so hard when he sends me that message. You know Mr.hacker, I want to know more about you. And I will know soon.

Chapter 5: My Baby's Got (More Than a Few) Secrets

Marianne had hit a big break in the case, and the publicity surrounding it was getting bigger by the minute. Sam had been informed and interviewed before, but had otherwise been in the dark. While Hannah watched the kids and Sam was away at work, Marianne went with a detective and uncovered one of the missing pieces of the puzzle, and called Hannah.

"Just a heads up, you're on speaker and I'm trying to help your stepson with his art project." Hannah answered the phone, trying to hot glue a row of popsicle sticks.

"Well, I have some news. When you get done, take me off speaker and I'll let you know. It's about the case." Marianne replied.

"What's mom talking about?" Mason asked, as Mickey pulled a sticker off of his forehead. "Idiot." His sister scoffed.

"She means my phone case, I had to get a new one and she showed me one on Amazon." Hannah lied.

"Yup. It's actually pretty urgent, so..." Marianne hinted.

"I'll help him, you go figure out which phone case you want." Mickey volunteered.

Hannah nodded and took her phone into the other room, clicking it off of speaker.

"So? Are you married to a murderer, which also brings me to the question, am I leading one on?" Hannah whispered.

"Possibly. It took a while, and an incredibly talented mechanic, but the old Dalton car works. It even had a Backstreet Boys CD jammed in the player, which made me reminiscent for a while." Marianne revealed.

"Besides revisiting your old love of Nick Carter, what else did you find?" Hannah asked.

"First of all, my favorite was Howie, and secondly the GPS records revealed that on the day of Addison's disappearance, Sam drove all the way out to the Birchport forest. The records from the train station, which were nearly impossible to get, revealed that Addison got off the train at a station in Birchport. Somehow, some way, Sam and Addison must've crossed paths in Birchport and that's how her DNA got into his car. We have a crew headed out there tomorrow, so now we wait." Marianne responded, leaving Hannah stunned.

"Should I take the kids out to an arcade or something tomorrow so, in the world where Addison is discovered and news reporters hound Sam over it, they don't have to deal with all that? Or do the Daltons have a private jet ready to fly everyone out to Cabo?" Hannah was concerned for the kids.

"I mean we do have a private jet, but unfortunately no Cabo trips yet. There's an arcade on Third and Main, it's got a ice cream place right next to it. As long as they don't have too much sugar, it should be a great distraction." Marianne answered.

"Okay. Does Sofia know all this yet?" Hannah asked.

"Yes, and she told me to tell 'Helena' that her other tasks may be over soon. I presumed she meant you." Marianne replied.

"Well tell her 'Helena' said thanks. Got to go, your stepson just hot glued his art project to the tablecloth." Hannah looked over into the kitchen, and quickly hung up.

Later, as Sam walked Hannah to her car, they chatted about life and typical nanny affair things when a news alert set Sam's phone off, and he was stunned.

"Huh, it's about Addison's disappearance." He looked at his phone, while Hannah watched anxiously.

"Oh, what does it say?" She acted confused.

"They have a lead. A few detectives took my old car, but they just said her DNA was in there. It makes sense, we drove that car all the time, we had twins. She nearly gave birth to them in that backseat." He replied.

"Sounds like you need to focus on other things and not worry so much about her. She fled, you moved on more than once, just... leave that all behind." Hannah leaned in a little bit and whispered in his ear, playing up the act.

"Oh believe me, I intend to." Sam kissed Hannah, who thought about other things as she kissed him back.

The elevator stopped about fifteen minutes later, and Hannah pulled away and got out. When she got into her car, she grabbed a container of mints and ate a few of them.

"Can't believe I just made out with someone that might have killed his wife, and also has the guts to cheat on his wife." She said to herself, as she started the car.

After the kids went to bed, Sam and Marianne stayed up talking about their days. In the middle of the night, after checking on Ainsley, Marianne glanced over at a sleeping Sam.

"How could he do these awful things? He has two daughters, how could he hurt one woman physically and one emotionally?" She thought. She contemplated a lot of things that would end everyone's suffering, hers included, but nonetheless she went to sleep, and wished for a better tomorrow.

I'm claire.... currently on my third rewatch of pll..

originally watched it when I was in middle school and was a huge fan..watched it on netflix and eventually caught up to the 4th season and continued to watch as episodes kept coming out..i remember the thrill of each episode coming out :'))

i stopped watching after the show ended and soon deemed it "lame" and "stupid" and "a bad show" and refused to watch it....then last year (2021) i decided i was the lame one for not allowing myself to enjoy something and was quickly wrapped back up in the show because it had been so long that I forgot everything that had happened lol. quickly decided that just because it can be "stupid" and a "bad show" does not mean it isn't enjoyable...is the writing terrible? yes. is the acting terrible? sometimes yes. do storylines get wrapped up? normally no...but all of these are what makes the show so fucking fun to watch

i also ended up getting my cousin into it at around season 4 or 5 and we finished season 7 this march. after which i quickly began watching the show again. still need to find time to watch the first couple seasons with my cousin which i am excited for her to watch so a couple things will make sense to her :P

And so while people like Foolish and Puffy are justified if they want to hold a grudge, it does not mean that people like Ponk and Hannah weren't also hurt. 💜 - is c!purpled inherently bad, or just a product of his environment? GGGGG OKAY I COULD GO ON ABOUT THIS FOR DAYS ON END BUT! So the question obviously is referring to the environment of the dream smp, which I don't think I feel like is responsible for purpled being how he is? He very much was Like That from the first day he arrived on the server. HOWEVER, if you know anything about me you will know that I take Count the People as my holy gospel - it's incredible, if you haven't read it you NEED to go do that, etc. But, so, in the way that this question is intending to ask? No, Purpled is NOT the product of his environment if we say that environment is the Dream SMP. However if we expand that environment to include Hypixel? Then he is just a product of his environment. Also standard disclaimer that I'm aware that headcanons don't equal canon, it's just that if it wasn't hypixel I highly believe that Some kind of big traumatizing event happened to make Purpled Like That because he's not an inherently harsh person, we see that with dogchamp and we see that with his (admittedly brief) friendships with other people on the SMP. 🛸 - should c!purpled have kept things between himself and c!quackity, and not involved c!slime? So if you read my previous answer, it's obvious that I love cpurpled. However, murder is uh. Not justified. Granted neither was blowing up the UFO peace and love. c!punz's motivators

c!punz is so fascinating to me bc he seems to have three general motivators that once picked up upon shine a really intersting light on what he and c!dream may have in store.

the first: when he's on the server and acting of his own volition he seems to be a staunch advocate for fairness. when a fight breaks out nearby with the intent to steal from the ambushed party, for example, he will join on the side of the victim. (swear to god i remember this happening but i cannot find a clip rip.) when c!tubbo mentions not having much stuff to his name c!punz immediately gives him iron blocks and netherite ingots completely for free. i also think it's worth noting that c!dream absolutely could have saved c!technoblade from execution on his own but presumably chooses c!punz to go in his stead to distance himself from acting against l'manberg in the public eye. this suggests that acting in c!technoblade's defense wouldn't be seen as out of character for c!punz in hindsight had c!quackity not spotted c!dream helping out, which contributes to my belief that c!punz is motivated by (and known for being motivated by) fairness on the server.

much later, when c!hannah, c!bad, and c!tina appropriate his tower he gets angry and evicts them immediately, but his problem with it seems to be a little more complicated than on first appearance. he doesn't have an issue with the people in an i-need-revenge kind of way that characterises a lot of conflicts on the server, but takes issue with them claiming to have made something that he made. he is amenable to trading with c!hannah to convince her to leave rather than fighting her, a fight which he would provably win, and lenient with the deadline by which she must move. violence for the sake of violence doesn't drive him to vengeance here, and personal loyalty neither saves c!hannah from his ire nor increases it towards c!tina who doesn't already have a good working relationship with him. despite being within his rights to react larger and louder, after his first outburst he seeks to resolve the situation in a way that is fair to all parties equally (even if it means demeaning himself to do so).

the second and third are more obvious: money and personal loyalty. before the disc finale, in the privacy of his own home c!punz admits that the money c!tommy offers him to betray c!dream is 'the biggest payment [he's] ever seen' and 'more than dream has ever given [him]'. he says he is 'torn' about the choice even though if going only by money siding with c!tommy is clearly the right choice, which illustrates his personal loyalty to c!dream. yet neither motivation seems to be one c!punz sticks to as an absolute rule, since if that was the case we'd see him easily switch sides for the money or stoutly refuse to betray his partner.

of course, as we see later, he does refuse to betray c!dream after all. c!tommy's offer to him wasn't part of their plan. before this c!punz thought he'd already done enough to distance himself from c!dream to sell the 'betrayal' and is surprised by c!tommy's message. so c!punz easily could have betrayed c!dream for real here in exchange for what c!tommy gives him, and maybe even more if he convinced the other members of the server they owe him for all the info he surely has on c!dream at this point. but he doesn't.

this demonstrates to me that c!punz has a code of fairness that he abides by, and though he is a mercenary his individual loyalty ultimately matters more to him than money. my question for c!punz then becomes: what is this plan c!dream has that not only passes his fairness rule but also motivates him more than the vast amounts of personal riches that gave him pause before the disc finale? what makes him more loyal to c!dream than literally the entire rest of the entire server? what, in c!punz's mind, is worth everything both of them are putting themselves through: lying to all his friends, being completely isolated from everyone else, acting as exaggerated villains and hurting people c!punz seems to genuinely care about to cover up what they're really doing (not to mention the torture and starvation in c!dream's case)... i just find it really fascinating all round. and i honestly cannot wait for the payoff!

(Y/N) whirled around as their sword struck the training dummy, Fran barking in excitement. (Y/N) chuckled at the dog’s excitement before continuing their own imposed strict training.

Sam had been at the prison for days recently but, (Y/N) while sad, didn’t falter. They tried to improve! Sam said he’d around more if he had help but trust was a hard thing to get in the SMP, and Sam had to really trust someone to help guard the SMP’s only prisoner. It was taking longer than Sam and (Y/N) would have liked but Sam had to be sure and (Y/N) understood.

Striking hard against the dummy, (Y/N) paused when instead of excited barks they heard Fran growl. Looking around as they carefully lowered their sword. Fran smelled something foreign to their area.

“Fran, protect.” (Y/N) muttered and started to move forward as casually as they could, Fran on their heels.

Trying not to alert the foreign intruders, (Y/N) tried to be casual as they picked up their shield and went towards the house. Fran was still softly growling as she followed orders from the teen while looking around. Halfway to the house was when Fran started to bark furiously. (Y/N) followed Fran’s locked gaze at the two figures approaching entering their clearing. One in white and black robes and the other a hybrid with startling red eyes.

“Hello!” The one in white robes spread their arms. “You must be Sam’s child, right?”

“Yeah.” (Y/N) said slowly. “You seem to know me, but I’m afraid I don’t know you gentlemen, and my father has taught me not to talk to strangers.”

Fran was still barking and (Y/N) made no move to calm the dog.

“Sam hasn’t talked about us? We’re good friends of his! I’m Bad and this is my friend Ant!” Bad introduced themselves. “And now we’re not strangers!”

“Afraid that’s also not how it works. If you’re looking for dad, he’s currently feeling a bit under the weather and not taking visitors. So, if you don’t mind…” (Y/N) said going to move to the house again.

“We actually wanted to meet you!” Ant quickly said. “Sam talks about you so much.”

(Y/N) stopped, gripping onto their sword. “What does he say about me?”

“Oh, a lot of wonderful things! Like how much he loves you and cares about you, how good you are at sword fighting, how well you can build, and how much he trusts you to be home alone.”

“Damn.” (Y/N) whispered as they looked at Bad.

“Language,” Bad said but grinned.

They’d caught (Y/N)’s lie but (Y/N) also could hear the underlying threat.

“What do you want?” They growled quietly.

“We wanted to talk about the Egg!”

“Don’t care. Good day.” (Y/N) huffed.

“Now!” Ant stepped forward, making (Y/N) take a step back as Fran stepped in front of them. “The Egg has a lot to offer you. And Sam! We can talk about it if you can just calm down the dog and we just sit.”

“What makes you think I want anything? I’m pretty happy.”

“Even with Sam gone so much?” Bad threw out, making (Y/N) frown. “You must be alone so often.”

“You think that’s going to help convince me? That just makes me want to get farther from you.” (Y/N) laughed.

“Come now, let’s just try and talk.” Bad spread his arms.

“No. Now, get off my property.” (Y/N) held gripped their sword tightly to make a point.

Bad sighed. “We tried to do it calmly.”

Quick as a flash, Ant pulled a bow and shot at the teen. (Y/N) was luckily just as quick to block with their shield, growling.

“Fran, attack.” (Y/N) ordered before getting low to the ground as they raced behind the dog bolting for the two intruders.

Bad pulled a sword as Ant fired at Fran first, the dog managing to change direction out of the way. Bad yelped as (Y/N)’s sword rang against his with the strong force before his face went hard and he started to fight against (Y/N). The teen could pretty easily hold their own though, they had been training. Swords scrapped against each other and (Y/N)’s shield as not far away, Fran was taking bolder and bolder snaps at the cat hybrid, keeping him occupied.

(Y/N) doubled down against Bad before managing to disarm him and knock him over before putting a point of the sword to his neck.

“Fran! Heel!” (Y/N) commanded and Fran growled at Ant but moved no further as Ant watched the teen. “I suggest…you put that down.”

Ant looked at Bad then (Y/N) going to put the bow down before smirking as (Y/N) felt a hit on the back of their head. They fell to the ground, trying to get the world to stop spinning as they heard Fran give a pained yelp but then they felt another hit and they blacked out.

“Thank you.” Bad took Hannah’s hand. “Let’s get them to the Egg. Sam can’t deny us if the Egg shows his child the path.”

Sam struggled slightly as he ran with his little creeper in his arms to Church Prime with his wounded side as potions did so but damn it, he’d make it there. Fran ran beside him as they made their journey. Sam hated himself for all of this. It was all his fault.

He had been guard duty for weeks. He had no one to take over for him. Ender knew how long (Y/N) was with the Egg! If he had been there instead of only finding out from Tommy!!

He’d fix it now though and he wouldn’t screw up again.

“We’re almost there Fran and (Y/N),” Sam muttered as his side, burned but he saw the tower of the church and he’d make it.

Sam looked over (Y/N) again as he sprinted down the prime path. Their usual clothes were now a deep red but the vine-like lines that had been around their eyes were now gone. He’d reverse the damage.

He stood on the edge of the holy ground a few minutes later and went over, (Y/N) finally giving their first sight of movement as they winced as they went over the line. But it was good, (Y/N) was on the grounds. Rushing inside the church, Sam put them on the edge of the pool before using an empty potion bottle to scoop up the water.

“Alright. (Y/N). (Y/N), wake up for me little creeper.” Sam muttered as he shook the teen.

It took a bit of trying as (Y/N) had passed out earlier but he managed and (Y/N) blinked awake slowly.

“D-Dad?” They muttered, disoriented.

“Yeah, here, drink this quickly.” Sam quickly propped them up.

(Y/N) couldn’t think straight yet and took the bottle without question and took a drink before wincing. Holding their head, Sam quickly hugged them.

“It’s ok, you’re ok. It’s just trying to fight against the cleanse.”

“C-Cleanse?” (Y/N) questioned as they winced at the pain.

“Drink, just drink.”

(Y/N) looked at the blurry room around them as they didn’t want to drink. They didn’t want to feel more pain.

“Come on, drink kiddo.” Sam pleaded.

(Y/N) whimpered before chugging the drink to get it over with. Dropping the bottle when it was gone, they held their head with both of their hands. Sam hugged them tightly, whispering comforting words with Fran’s head in their lap, as he waited for the Egg to leave his child. Slowly, the deep red on their clothes disappeared, and ever so slowly, the pain subsided.

When the pain was gone, (Y/N) waited a few moments before looking at Sam, who smiled so happily as he held their face.

“There’s my little creeper.” He said.

“What-What happened?” (Y/N) muttered as they looked around at the church around them.

“What…do you remember?” Sam asked carefully.

“I…There…Those men!” (Y/N) sat up straight. “They-They attacked Fran and I!”

“Who were they?” Sam clenched a hand.

“I-Bad and Ant. And—” They put a hand on the back of their head, wincing. “There was a third. They hit me from behind.”

“I-I don’t know what happened after that,” Sam admitted. “But, you’re alright now. Let’s get you home and we’ll figure this out later.”

Sam stood up and took their hand, helping them up and letting them lean on him as they started the slow walk back home.

“I…I fought them off for as long as I could.” (Y/N) told him.

“You fought them?” Sam looked at them surprised.

“Yeah, but not well…I didn’t even know there was someone else and Fran helped me.” They muttered, the dog wagging her tail.

“Still. That’s really good, Bad and Ant aren’t weak fighters.” Sam mumbled, planning a long “chat” with the Eggpire.

“Not good enough to be a guard.” (Y/N) said under their breath but Sam caught it.

“What? A guard?”

(Y/N) flushed as they looked away from the father, Sam stopping their walk.

“(Y/N), I…I know haven’t been around a lot, what’s going on?”

“That was kind of the point.” (Y/N) shrugged. “I-I know you have a lot of work to do on your own with the prison and you don’t have help! So…I’ve been training to try and help you at the prison and then we can also be together more.”

Sam’s heart melted as he gently hugged his child. “(Y/N)…Ender, you have such a big heart. I love that you tried to get better so you can help me and we can be together more often, but I don’t want you in the prison. It’s a bad and dangerous place but I promise, I’ll get guards to help me.”

(Y/N) hugged Sam back tightly, tearing up slightly. “I just…I miss you so much and I just want to help.”

“And I’m so happy to hear that you want to help and I’m so, so, so sorry I’m not home more often, but I will be. I’ll find guards and I’ll be home. I love you so much little creeper and I’ve missed you too.”

He wouldn’t let something like this happen again. He wouldn’t screw up again…

Avatar: Cultural Appreciation or Appropriation?

I love Avatar: the Last Airbender. Obviously I do, because I run a fan blog on it. But make no mistake: it is a show built upon cultural appropriation. And you know what? For the longest time, as an Asian-American kid, I never saw it that way.

There are plenty of reasons why I never realized this as a kid, but I’ve narrowed it down to a few reasons. One is that I was desperate to watch a show with characters that looked like me in it that wasn’t anime (nothing wrong with anime, it’s just not my thing). Another is that I am East Asian (I have Taiwanese and Korean ancestry) and in general, despite being the outward “bad guys”, the East Asian cultural aspects of Avatar are respected far more than South Asian, Middle Eastern, and other influences. A third is that it’s easy to dismiss the negative parts of a show you really like, so I kind of ignored the issue for a while. I’m going to explain my own perspective on these reasons, and why I think we need to have a nuanced discussion about it. This is pretty long, so if you want to keep reading, it’s under the cut.

Obviously, the leadership behind ATLA was mostly white. We all know the co-creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino (colloquially known as Bryke) are white. So were most of the other episodic directors and writers, like Aaron Ehasz, Lauren Montgomery, and Joaquim Dos Santos. This does not mean they were unable to treat Asian cultures with respect, and I honestly do believe that they tried their best! But it does mean they have certain blinders, certain perceptions of what is interesting and enjoyable to watch. Avatar was applauded in its time for being based mostly on Asian and Native American cultures, but one has to wonder: how much of that choice was based on actual respect for these people, and how much was based on what they considered to be “interesting”, “quirky”, or “exotic”?

The aesthetic of the show, with its bending styles based on various martial arts forms, written language all in Chinese text, and characters all decked out in the latest Han dynasty fashions, is obviously directly derivative of Asian cultures. Fine. That’s great! They hired real martial artists to copy the bending styles accurately, had an actual Chinese calligrapher do all the lettering, and clearly did their research on what clothing, hair, and makeup looked like. The animation studios were in South Korea, so Korean animators were the ones who did the work. Overall, this is looking more like appreciation for a beautiful culture, and that’s exactly what we want in a rapidly diversifying world of media.

But there’s always going to be some cherry-picking, because it’s inevitable. What’s easy to animate, what appeals to modern American audiences, and what is practical for the world all come to mind as reasons. It’s just that… they kinda lump cultures together weirdly. Song from Book 2 (that girl whose ostrich-horse Zuko steals) wears a hanbok, a traditionally Korean outfit. It’s immediately recognizable as a hanbok, and these dresses are exclusive to Korea. Are we meant to assume that this little corner of the mostly Chinese Earth Kingdom is Korea? Because otherwise, it’s just treated as another little corner of the Earth Kingdom. Korea isn’t part of China. It’s its own country with its own culture, history, and language. Other aspects of Korean culture are ignored, possibly because there wasn’t time for it, but also probably because the creators thought the hanbok was cute and therefore they could just stick it in somewhere. But this is a pretty minor issue in the grand scheme of things (super minor, compared to some other things which I will discuss later on).

It’s not the lack of research that’s the issue. It’s not even the lack of consideration. But any Asian-American can tell you: it’s all too easy for the Asian kids to get lumped together, to become pan-Asian. To become the equivalent of the Earth Kingdom, a mass of Asians without specific borders or national identities. It’s just sort of uncomfortable for someone with that experience to watch a show that does that and then gets praised for being so sensitive about it. I don’t want you to think I’m from China or Vietnam or Japan; not because there’s anything wrong with them, but because I’m not! How would a French person like to be called British? It would really piss them off. Yet this happens all the time to Asian-Americans and we are expected to go along with it. And… we kind of do, because we’ve been taught to.

1. Growing Up Asian-American

I grew up in the early to mid-2000s, the era of High School Musical and Hannah Montana and iCarly, the era of Spongebob and The Amazing World of Gumball and Fairly Odd Parents. So I didn’t really see a ton of Asian characters onscreen in popular shows (not anime) that I could talk about with my white friends at school. One exception I recall was London from Suite Life, who was hardly a role model and was mostly played up for laughs more than actual nuance. Shows for adults weren’t exactly up to par back then either, with characters like the painfully stereotypical Raj from Big Bang Theory being one of the era that comes to mind.

So I was so grateful, so happy, to see characters that looked like me in Avatar when I first watched it. Look! I could dress up as Azula for Halloween and not Mulan for the third time! Nice! I didn’t question it. These were Asian characters who actually looked Asian and did cool stuff like shoot fireballs and throw knives and were allowed to have depth and character development. This was the first reason why I never questioned this cultural appropriation. I was simply happy to get any representation at all. This is not the same for others, though.

2. My Own Biases

Obviously, one can only truly speak for what they experience in their own life. I am East Asian and that is arguably the only culture that is treated with great depth in Avatar.

I don’t speak for South Asians, but I’ve certainly seen many people criticize Guru Pathik, the only character who is explicitly South Asian (and rightly so. He’s a stereotype played up for laughs and the whole thing with chakras is in my opinion one of the biggest plotholes in the show). They’ve also discussed how Avatar: The Last Airbender lifts heavily from Hinduism (with chakras, the word Avatar itself, and the Eye of Shiva used by Combustion Man to blow things up). Others have expressed how they feel the sandbenders, who are portrayed as immoral thieves who deviously kidnap Appa for money, are a direct insult to Middle Eastern and North African cultures. People have noted that it makes no sense that a culture based on Inuit and other Native groups like the Water Tribe would become industrialized as they did in the North & South comics, since these are people that historically (and in modern day!) opposed extreme industrialization. The Air Nomads, based on the Tibetan people, are weirdly homogeneous in their Buddhist-inspired orange robes and hyperspiritual lifestyle. So too have Southeast Asians commented on the Foggy Swamp characters, whose lifestyles are made fun of as being dirty and somehow inferior. The list goes on.

These things, unlike the elaborate and highly researched elements of East Asian culture, were not treated with respect and are therefore cultural appropriation. As a kid, I had the privilege of not noticing these things. Now I do.

White privilege is real, but every person has privileges of some kind, and in this case, I was in the wrong for not realizing that. Yes, I was a kid; but it took a long time for me to see that not everyone’s culture was respected the way mine was. They weren’t considered *aesthetic* enough, and therefore weren’t worth researching and accurately portraying to the creators. It’s easy for a lot of East Asians to argue, “No! I’ve experienced racism! I’m not privileged!” News flash: I’ve experienced racism too. But I’ve also experienced privilege. If white people can take their privilege for granted, so too can other races. Shocking, I know. And I know now how my privilege blinded me to the fact that not everybody felt the same euphoria I did seeing characters that looked like them onscreen. Not if they were a narrow and offensive portrayal of their race. There are enough good-guy Asian characters that Fire Lord Ozai is allowed to be evil; but can you imagine if he was the only one?

3. What It Does Right

This is sounding really down on Avatar, which I don’t want to do. It’s a great show with a lot of fantastic themes that don’t show up a lot in kids’ media. It isn’t superficial or sugarcoating in its portrayal of the impacts of war, imperialism, colonialism, disability, and sexism, just to name a few. There are characters like Katara, a brown girl allowed to get angry but is not defined by it. There are characters like Aang, who is the complete opposite of toxic masculinity. There are characters like Toph, who is widely known as a great example of how to write a disabled character.

But all of these good things sort of masked the issues with the show. It’s easy to sweep an issue under the rug when there’s so many great things to stack on top and keep it down. Alternatively, one little problem in a show seems to make-or-break media for some people. Cancel culture is the most obvious example of this gone too far. Celebrity says one ignorant thing? Boom, cancelled. But… kind of not really, and also, they’re now terrified of saying anything at all because their apologies are mocked and their future decisions are scrutinized. It encourages a closed system of creators writing only what they know for fear of straying too far out of their lane. Avatar does do a lot of great things, and I think it would be silly and immature to say that its cultural appropriation invalidates all of these things. At the same time, this issue is an issue that should be addressed. Criticizing one part of the show doesn’t mean that the other parts of it aren’t good, or that you shouldn’t be a fan.

If Avatar’s cultural appropriation does make you uncomfortable enough to stop watching, go for it. Stop watching. No single show appeals to every single person. At the same time, if you’re a massive fan, take a sec (honestly, if you’ve made it this far, you’ve taken many secs) to check your own privilege, and think about how the blurred line between cultural appreciation (of East Asia) and appropriation (basically everybody else) formed. Is it because we as viewers were also captivated by the aesthetic and overall story, and so forgive the more problematic aspects? Is it because we’ve been conditioned so fully into never expecting rep that when we get it, we cling to it?

I’m no media critic or expert on race, cultural appropriation, or anything of the sort. I’m just an Asian-American teenager who hopes that her own opinion can be put out there into the world, and maybe resonate with someone else. I hope that it’s given you new insight into why Avatar: The Last Airbender is a show with both cultural appropriation and appreciation, and why these things coexist. Thank you for reading!

Quick question, I been in the fandom for a long ass time (since the first sadist animatic since I was a fan of sadist since their Batim days) so I think I good grasp on all of the folk in the smp but uh.... I kinda realised that I have no clue why c!Niki hates c! Wilbur and even more so, why does everyone thinks she's a girlboss for it??? Did I miss an entire plotline orrrr?

admittedly, im not the best well versed in it either (i'd recc going to mia geoguessbur, whos tbh the expert on c!wilbur and c!niki imo) but the short of it is: he realized the anger she had previously associated with tommy (because he "ruined everything", also see her attempted murder) was wrongly placed. he didn't do anything! ....and then she shifted the blame and that anger to wilbur instead of her like... dealing with her emotions. oops!

as for the girlboss thing... i think depending from person to person WHY they do it varies.

part of it is a willful ignorance of c!niki's character and her arc and instead working to fit her to a trope, i'm sure of it. likewise (though a bit cynical), i feel like a lot of people dont follow the female characters/ccs but dont want to LOOK like they dont so they... kind of fake it til they make it kind of thing? using the girlboss method is a great and easy way to show support for a character without having to actually care nor show any amount of depth in investment in who that character actually IS or going through. Again, thats a cynical view though and absolutely not the only reason ppl "girlboss-ify" characters.

some of it is encouraging bad decisions in the same way ppl chanted for wilbur to blow up lmanberg-- yeah its not healthy, but its fun and dramatic so im gonna be positive about it! go off!

some of it also (at least for me so im counting it) is like.... its more complex than you can get into comfortably (or at least casually). theres nuance and morals and what they're doing isn't right but its not a simple choice either. so you just... say girlboss instead and move on? again its also tied to the second point where you're encouraging bad actions, but with this point as compared the other like... intent that it IS deeper than that, its more tragic. you're glossing over it for the sake of levity, if that makes sense? Its a tragedy and you like it. (admittedly tho, i've used this type of "girlbossing" the most with like... c!quackity and the prison arc bc i was too tired to debate morals FJDSKLFJ)

its important tho to keep in mind the difference in how ppl treat male vs female characters with the "girlboss-ification" no matter what though. are you treating all female characters the same and glossing over their depth or erasing their character to fit a typical "strong girl" or "boss girl" archetype? also ties back to the first point, is your support superficial to make yourself look good?

theres definitely a trend in fandom i think to ignore the depth with female characters and their actions/motives while digging in deep to the male characters. men are allowed to be a tragedy while women are ''empowered'' by their tragedy. as an example off top my head: the eggpire. ive seen multiple points talking about the underlying tragedy of members like bad or ant and how they got to that point, but most ive seen about hannah are just... "yeah shes evil now #girlboss".

this isnt to say that you SHOULDNT acknowledge the depth of those male characters, nor to try and like.. single out eggpire fans, its just the clearest example i can think of. multiple characters going thru the same/similar scenarios, but the reception to them is different

despite all the of above, i dont think "girlboss-ifying" a character is inherently a bad thing. At least when used responsibly, like the second or third option presented. it IS a fun shorthand for "thing character is being active and doing things i like", often with a unsaid message of "this character is doing BAD things that i like". i dont think it should be tossed aside or never used, just used mindfully. again: why are you treating this character like this? how much do you actually know about the situation? etc.
