My 2023 in Mandopop/Chinese music (update & recs)

It’s been too long since I last shared some music recommendations/updates on what I’m listening to! Admittedly, I haven’t been discovering as many new artists because I’m busy listening to 薛之谦 on repeat. But we'll focus on the new.

五月天 / Mayday 五月天 is a legendary band, so of course I knew of them and had heard a few of their songs over the years. But I never proactively sought out their music until recently. I still haven’t had time to dive into their back catalog, but I’ve already found some songs I really love.

《我又初恋了》 I actually really didn’t like this song the first time I heard it, but it wormed its way into my brain. It’s just a lot of fun! Non-serious songs can be good too.

《转眼》 My favorite 五月天 song <3. I’m probably too young to fully appreciate the lyrics, but they make me feel so nostalgic and bittersweet, like transitioning to a new chapter of life and leaving the old behind.

《因为你 所以我》 This song didn’t stand out to me at first, but it grew on me! I caught myself humming it a lot. It‘s kind of corny, but it sounds so full of hope.

陈奕迅 / Eason Chan I first started listening to 陈奕迅 a couple years ago after my Album a Day August challenge, but I’ve found that his music has grown on me over time. I believe I’ve only mentioned him once before, so I thought now was a good time to highlight my favorite of his songs.

《之外》 This is probably my favorite 陈奕迅 song. The lyrics convey a sense of hopelessness, but the overall song has a smooth, light sound.

《娱乐天空》 You know a song is good when it’s over 6 minutes long but feels like it flies by! It makes me want to get up, get moving, and be productive.

《烟味》 This song is dramatic, and I love it for that. Also has a hint of orchestral flavor.

《淘汰》 One of 陈奕迅’s most well-known songs—for a good reason. It has big Cpop ballad vibes but is definitely livelier.

白举纲 / Bai Jugang You’re going to notice several mentions of 披荆斩棘 in this post. That’s where I “met” 白举纲. I instantly liked his voice and loved seeing him with his “brother” 高瀚宇 and “dad” 张晋! You may also see his music under his English name, Pax Congo.

《被动失控》 This is the only song on the list you could headbang to.

《Shy Boy》 I love this song because it’s cute and includes a children’s rhyme that I learned as a kid: 找啊找啊找朋友 找到一个好朋友.

苏诗丁 / Su Shiding At some point last year I did a one-month free trial of Apple Music. It was an interesting experience because the recommendations were very different from what Spotify tends to show me. I’m glad Apple Music led me to 苏诗丁!

《LUCIFER（傲慢宗罪）》 All I can say is that this song exudes coolness and confidence. It also has a fair bit of English, but honestly I had to look up the lyrics to tell what some of it was.

《梦幻病》 This song is from the same album. It’s dreamlike but gets more frantic as it builds. Overall, it’s just a bit…unsettling.

队长 / Young Captain I learned about 队长 from a random post on Instagram about his concert in Malaysia. I think these songs might have gone viral on 抖音 or something. I was surprised I liked them so much because they both have some rap (I’m not a rap fan), but it was love at first listen.

《11》 I love how this song builds towards the end. I spend the whole song waiting for the crescendo, and it’s great payoff.

《楼顶上的小斑鸠》 This song is like the slightly mellower sibling of the one above. But I ended up liking this one even more.

金志文 / Jin Zhiwen 金志文 was another artist who Apple Music recommended to me. I definitely need to explore his discography more but haven’t had the chance to do so yet. But he has some good stuff so far!

《自娱自乐》 Smooth and relaxing but in a fun way. Simple and no-frills but will put a smile on your face!

《远走高飞》 This one feels like enjoying the breeze on a beautiful sunny day. I also enjoy the duet with 徐佳莹 version.

163braces 163braces started out as a YouTuber posting song covers. I have watched a couple of her covers, but they didn’t leave much of an impression on me. I was pleasantly surprised by her foray into original music. I look forward to hearing what she does next!

《控制》 The song I would want as my “soundtrack” if I were a video game character. It’s energetic and loud.

《murmur》 Honestly this song is pretty similar to the first one. Sometimes I have trouble distinguishing them. But hey, if ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

小鬼 / Lil Ghost 小鬼 did what I can best describe as “pulling an MGK” by going from more rap to kinda pop-punk? That MGK album was my guilty pleasure when in came out, so I’m all for 小鬼’s new direction.

《Last Day》 This song really gave me MGK vibes. It’s about half in English, but I often don't even notice when he switches between languages.

《不良少年》 I just know I would have loved this song so much in high school. It’s an angsty teen anthem. 

《为明天写封信》 I can totally imagine this song playing at the end of a 2000s teen movie! Maybe while showing a montage of the main characters graduating.

《无所求必满载而归》 by 陈粒 / Chen Li This is technically cheating because I have recommended 陈粒 songs before, but it was at least a couple years ago. I heard this song covered on 披荆斩棘的哥哥 and immediately looked up the original. Honestly I should have known it was a 陈粒 song because you can totally tell it’s her style.

《轻红》 by 曹杨 / Young I keep coming back to this song! It’s from a drama soundtrack. I was super surprised the first time I listened to it because I thought it was going to be a typical ballad based on the first ~45 seconds or so—it wasn’t. There is also another version by 陈雪燃 (the king of cdrama OSTs). But I actually prefer the 曹杨 version.

《时光机》 by 吴克群 / Kenji Wu I was introduced to 吴克群 via 披荆斩棘2. He was instantly one of my favorite contestants after his team’s amazing 《新地球》 performance (check it out). This song is bouncy and a little dreamy. I kinda want to hear a remix with Harry Styles’ As It Was. I just wish it were longer than 3 minutes!

howdy heres a decent post about how to find new music to listen to, from an autistic person who literally needs music to function most times 💪

spotify based since that is what i use

first off, Discover Weekly (updates Mondays) and Release Radar (updates Fridays) are pretty good if you arent looking for music quickly. i prefer Discover Weekly bc it usually is from artists ive never listened to.

BUT if you are anything like me and kind of need music daily, and/or feel like everything is getting stale to listen to and just is not stimulating enough, theres quite a few things you can do (:

i primarily use Chosic, since it kinda has a bunch of different shit to use n look at

if it feels too overwhelming, what you can do is stick with "Music Genre Finder" and "Similar Songs Finder"

even though it might sometimes ask on some pages, you do NOT have to sign into Spotify for this site if you dont want to (:

figuring out what genres and sub-genres you listen to the most is about to become your best friend ok

pretty much just toss in a bunch of songs you enjoy and take note of the genres and sub-genres. i recommend making playlists of songs with similar or same genres (and also bc its fun)

this one is the most basic, but is a good starting point to help you go down your rabbit hole

same concept; throw in songs you want more of. i do one song at a time but you can do multiple

i recommend taking a look at the advanced settings, but for the sake of keeping this post as comprehensive as possible, im going to stick to the basics.

clicking generate will pull up a list of songs similar to your input, available as both Spotify and YouTube playlists to save if you so choose

Create Similar Playlist

this is a feature that is already in Spotify, and it is again, very basic.

right clicking on a playlist ofc pulls up a neat lil menu

this one isnt that great, but it works better with the more songs you have on it from different artists.

often times it will add songs you already have saved, but otherwise its kinda okay

Enchance

again, a built-in Spotify feature, however this one might not be for everyone as i believe this is an experimental feature that not everybody has at the moment. still, if you do have it, i absolutely recommend it

basically what it does is add ~100 songs to your Liked Playlist, spaced out every two songs (they are not permanently saved if that annoys you; they go away after turning off this feature)

Enhance is out now i think? however it's only for created playlists and not your liked playlist. it still works the same but adds less music. more music gets suggested though when you save them

the Panther site had some issues loading for a while, but it's working again (it may have just been me. idk)

Starting off, we have this week’s new editions!

Starting with a lovely remix of Faint Courage by Lidkas Plus+! I am a huge sucker for Deltarune’s game over themes, and an excuse to add one to the playlist is very welcome.

The second new edition is a song I only discovered this morning. Everyone please welcome POWER OF [[BIG]] to the playlist! Made by CoVIK, this is a take on a Chapter Dewritten Spamton theme. (Just think Swapswap) Although this is the first content I’ve seen from this AU, I am a huge fan of the music! Asides from the AU concept, this theme incorporates Scampton’s motifs into a regular Big Shot very well. The vocals are also nice!

For our weekly spotlight, I would love to share a song from LB!Deltaswap. LB!Deltaswap is one of my favorite takes on a Deltarune swap, and I decided to spotlight The Circus. It replaces Card Castle for a Jevil and King swap. It is made by Hollowlilies. I encourage you to listen to the song before reading the rest of my thoughts!

I think my favorite part of this song is how Lantern comes in at the end. It works fantastically in the song! I must note that I am not sure who Seam swaps with in this AU, but I’m fairly sure they swap with Lancer. The Audio  Flâneur

This piece was included in the June/July issue of The Goo, a free listings magazine for Dublin. 

With the resurgence of vinyl and even cassette, perhaps nostalgia for and a return to the iPod and the CD collecting and ripping culture that surrounded it is inevitable. As I'm one of life's late adopters anyway, this isn't so long ago for me because I only got my first and so far still functioning iPod just 10 years ago (pro tip: never update your iTunes). This turned out to be a very good thing for me and my huge collection of CDs and luckily by then they came with a 60 GB memory. I've had as many as 18,000 MP3s on it but could always do with more space. I filled it the slow way by burning as many of my CDs as I could from A to Z (nothing came from iTunes). At the start I was putting almost everything in but as I got closer to the limit I had to get more selective and even take things off (the eternal search for doubles!). The most important and breakthrough function for me was leaving it on 'shuffle'. I know that many have already written about this phenomenon before but taking that chaotic route through my lifetime's collection of music is what really allowed my CDs a second chance. The memories and surprises were constant, especially in those early days. One of the best things was hearing a song I didn't even recognise and checking to see who it was. It might turn out to be a track from a various artists free magazine CD, a CDR a friend burned me in the '90s I probably only listened to once or a band I simply hadn't listened to in 20 years. It was worth all the burning and popping in and out of discs I can tell you! With the now instant ease of locating certain songs I started to obsess (repeat play) over certain ones that previously I'd liked but hadn't struck me so powerfully before. These included Kirsty MacColl's 'New England' and The Dream Academy's 'Life in a Northern Town'. In this case both were artists I had previously been only vaguely aware of but now I was reading about them online and purchasing more of their music. As well as getting new CDs, I've always been someone who buys second-hand, including from charity shops and car boot sales. It remains something of a compulsion now that I can add them to the pool of music I'm constantly curating inside that deceptively small device. This digging for digital gold has itself come to resemble a kind of random shuffle as you never know what you will find next or where that search might take you. Some artists were even purchased because I knew I would be hearing them in the context of shuffle so I took chances on some popular artists I didn't previously like enough to actually own their music (eg. Madonna, Elton John). Surely one of their songs in isolation won't hurt me! I also decided I wanted to start collecting all the albums from certain artists I was now newly re-discovering (eg. Lambchop, Low, Laurie Anderson, Ann Scott and David Kitt). This meant I could use the individual artist shuffle and just wallow in as much of their music as I wanted. Another thing I thought was very good for my brain was jumping from genre to genre, from electronic to punk to traditional Irish music. This made me hunt out even more non-rock albums and it can lead to some quite hilarious sequences of music, it certainly grabs your attention when Micho Russell starts up a reel after some mutant disco from Arthur Russell! One of the most revelatory things that happened was seeing how some of the Irish bands could easily hold their own against more well known groups. Shuffle might be the ultimate test of any band! This directly led me to starting a website called Abstract Analogue, to initially write some in-depth pieces about mostly '90s bands such as The Last Post, Idiots, Dot Creek, The Sewing Room, The Wormholes, Deep Burial, Capratone, Decal and Sunbear. As I was struggling to track down certain albums I didn't get at the time I noticed that many were for sale from secondary sellers on Amazon for as little as 1 cent. It struck me that unless you were already familiar with the band, there was no other way for you to discover just how good these albums were (none of the groups I covered had yet been included in any 'great lost Irish albums' canon). If you are lucky there is a world of incredible and untapped digital music already sitting in your home and if not you will find it down the road in a charity shop or elsewhere for bargain prices. You could always raid the iTunes of friends but I prefer to keep it personal and more of a challenge. There is of course a world of exciting new music on platforms like Bandcamp that even I am getting used to. You can gradually refine what it is you like but keep adding to the pile is my advice (never throw your CDs away either if you can help it). The shuffle will test you at times but try not to skip or delete things straight away, I give everything a chance to grow on me, allowing the universal randomness of sound to lead the way. Soon you will be seeing life itself as one random shuffle after another. What will be next?

I want to update quickly and say, I’ve really been looking forward to the new chapter, but for reasons, I’ve had to take a step back. Things escalated so quickly over the last couple days and then the whole month so far has just been very unkind. 'Cause April wasn't great exactly, but it's been a heck of a lot better than May has been. No idea what the deal is because several other people in my life are not having a good time, either and it’s taken everyone by surprise. Don’t know if there’s some kind of misalignment in the stars or something nefarious happening behind the scenes, but it’s pushing me and other people to their limits, it seems.

Anyhoo, onto the ask. (I had to rewrite all this because tumblr flaked out on me.🥲)

1. A small act of kindness I can provide for someone. Whether it’s helping someone with something, or buying someone their favorite drink as a pick me up, or lending a listening ear, or saying just the right thing they need to hear (doesn’t happen often, I don’t want to lie to someone, so I use this sparingly. I’m also not great with words. I often surprise myself as often as I do to the person on the receiving side of it.), or wrapping a gift with personalized paper and touches, etc. etc. I get genuine happiness from it. Anytime I provide a little bit of kindness that I know someone might need, I’ll give it willingly.

2. Spotify. Lol, it really has changed my life. It’s so nice to have so much music in one place. And then to be able to discover new songs or rediscover old ones from another time in my life.

3. Indulging in my favorite drinks or foods. Bonus points if someone surprises me with one. My favorite coffee right now from Starbucks is a chocolate cream cold brew (and the baristas add vanilla and white mocha to mine because they know that I like mine on the sweeter side.) I had two of them yesterday and it was worth it despite the side effects. (But I’ve realized that I can have dairy??? I haven’t been paying too much attention, but I know I’ve had more than that I thought I should, but I’ve felt fine otherwise.) 4. Our cats! They’re so fun and sweet (when they want to be). I particularly miss my brother’s cat, but he moved away a few months ago. DaVinci is secretly the favorite. He’s the best one to hug. Lucy will secretly love you and then for the sake of looks, will bite or claw you to make it seem like she doesn’t. And then Sadie, I call her the favorite child. She was the stray we picked up and she really is the sweetest, but every now and then, I think the title gets to her head and then she’s clawing one of the chairs. But yeah, just cats in general. You might catch me watching videos of cats probably more often than I should. It might be a problem.

5. Any time spent being creative. Especially since it’s so hard to come by lately. I haven’t done any drawing or painting in 8 years. It sucks seeing all that time go by not maintaining the few skills I had there, but I’ve managed to pick up a few other ways to keep that creative outlet. The little bit of writing here and there I’ve managed to get out and then dusting off photoshop when the inspiration strikes.

i haven’t officially posted my own treasure planet headcanons, so that's what this is! some of this might be ooc but i don't really care because they are fun to think about, so yeah, enjoy!

this is gonna be long so i’m gonna put it under a keep reading

it makes me so sad that they supposedly don’t keep in touch at the end of the movie, so that's where headcanons come in. Jim and Silver went thru WAY too much to not keep in touch, Silver couldn’t leave Morph without being able to see him again either (Silver literally refers to himself as Morphs ‘dad’ in one scene!!) they at least send letters or have some sort of burner phone, with Silver being a wanted criminal and all. for a while they probably just sent letters, Jim talking about the academy and Silver sending little gifts from his escapades such as a lava rock or an especially interesting coin. Jim keeps all the gifts in a box, along with the letters but if he feels especially attached to a gift, he’ll set it on his window sill of on the rim of his mirror. as much as I like the idea of Jim getting Silver a jitterbug/ladybug, realistically Silver would be the one to set the idea into motion. Jim gets a larger gift and its a little phone, made of parts that Silver could scrap together (or on he found in a shop on a traders planet), he immediately sets it up and texts Silver. it was really nice for them to talk in real time and were probably already discussing the idea, even though Silver could get caught, so Jim was really excited about it. Jim now keeps Silver updated on life events and Silver calls every now and then to tell Jim about his travels. Silver hasn’t quite figured out how to send photos but once he does, he starts sending some everyday (including some hilarious selfies, akin to what a dad would post on Facebook).

Silver absolutely visits, for a while it was very, very scarce because he was still wanted but was sneaky enough to come and see Jim every few months. he comes and hangs out at the inn for a few days while his crew is out at bars or stocking up on items for their next adventure, as well as they know better than to fight their captain on his decisions. during these visits, Silver tells Jim (and anyone brave enough to sit near them) stories about what he had seen, creatures he had encountered and wonders they had discovered. Jim tells Silver about his time at the academy, new friends he’s made and what he’s learning, including some complicated stuff. sometimes Jim even get so into it, he brings out a textbook to express his point. while Silver is pretty smart, he has no idea what Jim is talking about (because its usually math and obscure facts) and usually just smiles and nods as Jim rambles. (lol this may be me projecting my ADHD onto Jim but i have the feeling he info dumps to people hes comfortable with)

speaking of the academy, i think despite all the combat training and captaining that Jim is learning, i think Jim would be really interested in math. like a surprising amount. it would probably be difficult to start off but once he did, hoo boy he could not stop. there were some hurdles he had to face but eventually he landed in a pretty advanced math course (not the highest but still pretty up there, maybe like calculus or applied mathematics). knowing some math was important as a captain, having to deal with probability on a ship in the Etherium, but Jim was fascinated by numbers and the way they made up the world. i think he would be really interested in physics or theoretical stuff, which is difficult but i think he could do it. he probably uses his previous experiences in space to help him visualize the math, which helps a lot.

the first time Silver came to the inn, Jim practically tackled him. which was no big deal since he’s almost double Jim’s size, Silver was more worried about Sarah and what she thought of him being a pirate and all. Jim assured him that everything was ok and he asked her but Silver still felt a bit nervous. he felt like he was intruding on her territory. but while Jim had run upstairs for something and Silver stood sheepishly in the doorway, Sarah came over with a smile on her face and shook his hand. he wasn’t expecting that at all, he was more ready for a glare from the kitchen or even a talk about ground rules. Sarah talked to him about how excited Jim was (she was also kind of excited, she had met plenty of pirates and was almost as fascinated as Jim was) and how she was grateful for Silver staying in her sons life. Silver felt much more comfortable after that and they started talking too, (not sure if it would be romantic or not, it would be cute but i love them just being friends as well) they became pretty good friends. Jim loved it, even if they weren’t married or Silver wasn’t biologically related to him, he felt like he had a full family again. when Jim was busy or sleeping, Sarah and Silver would chat over coffee or in the kitchen while Sarah cooked, Silver helping. Sarah would probably rope Silver into helping her at the inn once she learns he can cook and he kind of falls into a routine. come see Jim, hang out, when Jim is busy/out, go put on an apron.

(this one is 100% projecting lol) this is a pretty loose hc, especially since it started as a joke but now i really like it. i think Jim, as well as Silver, is transgender. Jim wasn’t really expecting Silver to be trans, as are most (he passes super well lmao). i mean, many pirates were gay, why can’t space faring ones be trans? hell, Silvers crew probably has a slew of queer folk among them, if not all of them being some sort of LGBT. body modification looks like a regular thing in their world, so i think Silver has already had top surgery, whether he was planning to or not. by that i mean that i think Silver could have been injured, woke up and found that something was missing. worried he may have become more cyborg, he checked, winced and found that bandages had been bound around his chest. ‘well that's out of the way’. despite not wanting to be vulnerable around his crew, most of them if not all of them know he’s trans since most of them didn’t see it as some sort of weakness, it was just who you were. (if ya’ll are interested, i have some crew hcs like gender and sexuality but this post is mainly about Jim, Silver and Sarah)

(continuation of the trans hc) when Jim came out to Silver, there’s a moment of silence between them. in Jim’s head it was awkward, but in Silver’s, things started clicking. Jim was worried Silver didn’t understand and quickly explain but Silver comforted him, and explained that he understood. Jim was the confused one now and Silver quickly cleared that up, explaining that he too was trans. Jim was relieved, confused and surprised. he hadn’t expected that outcome but that wasn’t bad, if anything he thought it was cool. he had more in common with his adoptee-dad than he had thought. Silver now makes sure to emphasis his compliments when Jim is working, hoping to boost Jim’s ego and make him feel better. it works and Jim feels even more comfortable in his own skin. (i have another part about Silver taking Jim to get top surgery but they would need Sarah’s permission first, not that she’d say no but Silver doesn’t want to encounter her wrath xD)

i’d like to think that Silver takes Jim up on his ship, not for plundering but just to sail around. the new crew had already seen Silver in action and decided nobody wanted to question him about Jim, especially since he was causing any trouble. eventually Jim couldn’t really visit Silvers ship anymore, being a Navy officer and all but that was ok, Silver still came to the inn and Jim had his own ship/s.

Silver knows all the drama around town, mostly because Sarah hears it fro customers and then gossips to Silver about it. Silver will come in, say hello and she’ll start, he’ll probably respond with something like ‘no way, they did that?’ and then he’d listen as she worked.

when talking to Jim, Silver refers to Sarah as ‘ma’ and Sarah starts referring to Silver as ‘dad’ since they have become Jim’s collective parents, and it doesn’t bother either of them.

after Jim lets Silver get away at the end of the movie, Silver stays on his own for a while, though no one knew that. he got a larger boat, just big enough for him and he wandered planets, drifted through space, just thinking. he wasn’t sure what to do next, he was a wanted man but he also had no crew. the thought of settling down passed in his mind but he couldn’t bring himself to do it, he was comfortable in the Etherium, he would get cabin fever after a week. so he continued being a pirate, it was rough work but he loved being among the stars, exploring the galaxy. Jim knew this and didn’t want to push Silver to stay at the inn for a long amount of time but they still made it work.

Silver has little experience with children, having none of his own until Jim (i’ve seen people give Silver children as his backstory but he doesn’t strike me as that kind of guy, not that he wouldn’t want kids but he’d have to choose between family life or pirates life. that's too much for him.) the most experience Silver had was with helping people at port and with his crew, anyone young enough to need guidance and smart enough to listen.

Silver loves music but really only know sea shanties, drinking songs and some old folk music, but he can still be found singing with his crew and humming while he’s working. Jim on the other hand listens to a lot of music, especially after treasure planet. (this is assuming they have all the music we have xD) he listened to brooding teenage music before, like Teenage Dirtbag or bands likes Greenday, but now he has a few shanties on his list as well, plus some classical music for when he’s studying or relaxing. he also listens to ABBA, either because he just likes them or because his mom plays them in the inn.

Jim, Sarah and Silver have way more pictures of each other now. the inn now has multiple family photos with Silver included, Jim has a framed image of the three of them and Silver has a little scrapbook. it’s the only thing he’s ok with having on his ship, still worried about being seen as ‘soft’ (even if he is a big softie and everyone knows it).

Silver usually wears a pretty simple working outfit with his nice coat and hat but when he does want to look nice, holy shit does he do it well. sometimes when he’s dressed up he wonders why he doesn’t do it more often just for fun but then he thinks of the countless times he’s had to throw out shirts stained with blood. he would never let that happen to his nice clothes.

i really like the idea that if things had been different, Sarah Hawkins would have been a pirate, and a damn good one at that. maybe she wasn’t in this life but that doesn’t stop the occasional daydream and questions to Silver about his lifestyle. he offers to take her on his boat when he takes Jim and she hesitates but says yes in the end. Jim definitely didn’t get his wanderlust spirit from Leland. (this is a little ooc for Silver but not for Sarah, i 100% believe she would be a pirate) maybe after Jim joins the Navy, he buys a small boat, big enough for him and his mom and they go on trips where they just enjoy the Etherium.

you cannot tell me that the second Silver was out of earshot on the long boat that he didn’t cry his eyes out. motherfucker may know how to hide his feelings but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have them, he’s a sucker and he knows it. when he gets more comfortable around Jim and Sarah, he finds himself getting way more tearful from touchy feely stuff. Morph being cute? sobbing. Jim called him dad? waterworks. literally anything that tugs on his heartstrings? has to go to his cabin to cry his eyes out. the first time Jim and Silver met up again, they both just started sobbing.

Silver, Jim too probably, has PTSD (sorry if i get anything wrong, i’m not sure what else to call it) to an extent. it isn’t intense to the point that he gets overwhelmed with emotions and has flashbacks (unless it has to do with his missing limbs) but he does have some nightmares and prepares for the worst in most scenarios. Jim has to remind him that the bang at the door wasn’t pirates, it was just a unruly customer and that the silhouette he saw outside was just a passing ship, not canon fire. Silver apologizes every time, despite not doing anything but switch to his sword and brace but he can’t help but feel bad for worrying them. i can’t imagine the kind of terrors he has about loosing his limbs.

Silver, when he detaches his arm, will forget he only has one hand. sort of like that video with the astronaut back on Earth, but instead of gravity, he keeps handing stuff to his cyborg hand, dropping the item and they being confused when he can’t find whatever he had. he’s just so used to it by now, he’ll even gesture with his missing hand and not realize he can’t convey what he’s doing. Jim has been asked to hand his stuff, Silver will try to grab it without look and ask Jim why he didn’t hand it to him. Jim has to remind him that he doesn’t have his cyborg arm, leaving Silver apologizing. its always lighthearted between them and they joke about it but Jim knows Silver is still bothered by it a little.

SO i told yall i was planning something new for my blog and i actually got this idea not too long ago. I’ve got a new bi-weekly event in the works: let me explain !

✨Musical Monday✨

The concept behind this is fairly simple, i’ll explain below the cut !

Every other Wednesday, I’ll post a little something to remind you that Musical Monday is in the works for the following week. You can then send in either 

-an album you enjoy by any artist 

-or a spotify playlist (that you created or that someone else created (with credits pls!))

and

-a book/show/movie who’s characters you want me to pair the songs with

my job is to then assign the characters from these shows/movies/books to the songs in said playlist/album.

Every other Monday (meaning every fortnight), I’ll be posting the characters with the songs as well as a piece of writing underneath explaining why I thought they matched the song. 

The whole point of this is to discover new music, hopefully give you my own recommendations as well, and also just to have fun and spread some love for these characters. I also genuinely adore analysing characters and digging deeper into their story arcs so this’ll be the perfect opportunity for me to share my thoughts with you and hear your own!

I am super excited about this project and I’ve been mulling it over for a little while now. Hopefully this is something that you guys will enjoy and want to participate it. so, hi!  jatp has reignited my desire to write again and this time i think i might actually finish a whole fic.  so uh, here it is :) please let me know if you like it, I’ll hopefully update asap, but i’m in uni so asap may be in like two weeks.  unless people really like it.  then, probably sooner lmao.

warnings: death bc rose, and i swear once but other than that i think nothing else?

Julie didn’t want to be frustrated, she really didn’t.  In fact, she wanted to be sad, mourning, depressed, or literally anything other than slightly pissed off all the time.  It’s incredibly exhausting to be angry all the time, and she felt like being sad would at least give her blood a break from simmering.

But her mom died.  And apparently her body only knows how to process grief by developing a rather annoying tendency to be irritated constantly.

She tries to forget it though.  Instead of wallowing in the negative feelings that cloud her family in the months following Rose Molina’s death, she throws herself into distractions.  She gets a job at a coffee shop near the USC campus and puts almost all her effort into becoming a top employee.  Her grades don’t drop because thankfully her professors seemed to all inherently understand that she just couldn’t sing anymore.  Like at all.

The world kept spinning.  Julie could only hope to hold on.

That’s how she ended up, six months later, complaining over a milk frother about her very well-intentioned best friend to the only person she knew would listen.

“Flynn just doesn’t understand,” Julie moans, shutting off the machine and dumping the contents unceremoniously into a to-go cup.  Her coworker, Allison, raises an eyebrow and swipes a rag at the milk spill that pools under the cup.

“Did she try to get you to sing again?”

“Surprise karaoke night with her girlfriend and a couple kids from class.  Her intentions were pure though so I don’t even know why I’m upset.” Julie shoves a lid onto the cup and slides it across the counter to a pre-occupied businessman who doesn’t notice the extra milk soaked into the bottom.  Allison nods thoughtfully and starts dumping coffee beans into the espresso machine.  Julie watches her with slight awe.  Allison was one of those people that terrified Julie when she met her; everything about her felt polished and put together down to the blunt cut of her pale blonde hair and the curve of her smirk when she smiled.  Soon enough, Julie discovered that she was as warm as any of her other friends, but it had taken a lot of closing shifts and smoothie runs to come to that conclusion.

Allison sets down the bag of coffee beans and gives Julie one of her solemn looks; it’s the sort of look where Julie thinks Allison could probably read her mind if she tried hard enough.

“Maybe they’re going about it wrong.  You haven’t been around music properly in what?  A year?  What if you just need to sit and listen to music again to just get you used to the environment?” Julie thinks for a moment.  Allison raises a fair point, and it’s the complete opposite tactic that everyone else has been trying, which has been to shove music in front of her to sing and give her expectant and hopeful looks. It’s a trial run.  Something casual.

“Where would I go?” Allison smiles a bit and passes Julie a container of oat milk to put away.

“There’s a bar off Sunset that’s hosting an open mic tonight.  Very relaxed and casual vibes.  I could pick you up from your apartment and take you.  We haven’t hung out since that movie night a while ago.”  Julie hesitates.  It’s not that she’s opposed to spending a night with Allison, but a small part of her feels like she’s cheating on her current circle of emotional support humans by agreeing to go. Not that her dad or Carlos or Tia would mind, but Flynn would possibly take offence and that alone stalled Julie for longer than she realized. Allison clocks the look on her face and amends the statement.

“Flynn is obviously welcome too.”

A mind reader, Julie swears. 

“Hell yeah. Let’s do this.”

Julie’s feeling significantly less optimistic when Allison’s car has been driven away by the valet and herself, Flynn, and Allison are all standing in line outside the club. Julie can feel the bass of the songs playing more than she can hear them, but the proximity of music is enough to make her palms sweat. Other than the music the coffee shop plays and the strains of country she hears through Carlos’ wall, Julie hasn’t heard proper music since Tia Victoria sang “Amazing Grace” for her mother’s funeral. Flynn notices her nervous look. 

“Chill, Jules. It’s all very chill. We’re just gonna listen to a couple bands.” 

“Flynn’s right. And if at any point you want to bail, we can go get soft pretzels.” 

“But we should try and stay for the whole thing!”

“However, we’re also going to respect you if you can’t do that,” Allison punctuates this sentence with a meaningful eyebrow raise and Flynn nods vigorously. Julie swallows and tries to mimic the courage she had a few hours ago.  The bartender scrutinizes their IDs for a moment before allowing them to sweep into the bar and Julie’s jaw nearly drops at the volume of people contained inside.  Nearly every seat is filled, and the standing areas are packed with people all jamming to the band onstage that’s currently playing what Julie has to admit is a pretty kick ass cover of “Somebody Told Me” by The Killers.  

Allison somehow discovers a table near the edge of the bar, and disappears off to get them drinks.  Flynn’s rocking out already, and Julie feels a few of the nerves in her stomach even out as the realization that she doesn’t have to sing sinks into her bones.  Allison was right, unsurprisingly.  If she focuses hard enough, she can even push out the memories of coming to these sorts of open nights with her mom.  Flynn shoots her a large and grateful grin and Julie lets herself smile back.  She’s taking a step.  She’s doing it.

Allison returns as the band switches and a new band begins to play a hyped up cover of “Africa” by Toto.  The three girls lapse into quiet appreciation of the music, with Flynn singing along to every song played, Allison bobbing her head to herself and occasionally letting out a few notes in her vocal range, and Julie just quietly appreciating the fact that she doesn’t feel like throwing up.

It’s all very casual, just like her friends said.

Until it’s not.

As the third band of the night begins their last song, Julie retreats to find the bathroom.  It’s hidden nearly backstage, and she’s just about to make it to the door when she hears the panicked shouts of someone from near the curtain which separates the small backstage from the actual performing area.

“Dude, I cannot believe he bailed on us.”

“Are you really surprised?  Bobby was a piece of shit.”

“Hey, he didn’t use to be!”

“Calm down, Reg.  You know he’s been treating us like garbage ever since that record label thought he had a ‘marketable voice’ or whatever they said.”

“Guys he bailed on us, what are we supposed to do?”

Julie, despite all the “stranger danger” lessons running through her brain, backed up far enough to see into the backstage area.  Three guys stood there, two with a guitar and a bass each and one with drumsticks he was nervously twirling.  The one with the guitar had his face buried in his hands and kept swearing heavily under his breath.  The other two seemed frozen in their own panic as well.  Guitar Player removed his hands from his face and Julie caught a glimpse of worried hazel eyes and dark curls.  Bass Player opened his arms and Guitar Player tumbled into them for a hug while Drum Player rubbed his back.  The three guys looked absolutely wrecked.

Here’s the thing: Julie had an uncontrollable urge to help people.  It’s how she got roped into half of Flynn’s schemes, how she ended up teaching Carlos all of his second grade science curriculum herself, and how she somehow became the unofficial backbone of her family after her mom died.  Seeing three guys utterly wrecked because, presumably, their fourth bandmate had bailed on them?  It activated that uncontrollable urge deep in her stomach.

Here’s another thing: Julie hasn’t played music or sang in six months.  She’s had no desire to, and every time she’s tried, the distinct urge to throw up overtook her.  Tonight was supposed to be the baby step that showed her whether or not music was something she could seriously consider again; whether or not she could feel that itch to perform anymore.

“Hey, do you guys need a fourth?”

She felt the itch.  

The three guys looked up in varying levels of shock.  Drum Player recovered first, and stepped towards her hesitantly, wringing his pink hoodie as he did.

“Um, what?”

“It sounded like someone bailed on you.  I can play.  If you need it.”  Guitar Player recovers next and nearly bounds over to her in barely contained excitement.

“You can play rhythm guitar?”

“No,” the three boys deflate, “I can play piano though.”  Guitar Player tilts his head to the side as though playing a melody through in his head.  He turns back to the other two.

“Bright could fit piano.”

“We never wrote the music for a piano component,” Drum Player wrinkles his nose.

“I did,” Guitar Player admits.  The other two don’t look phased, though Bass Player does raise an eyebrow.  “I was bored!”

“Okay, but we don’t want to put you out,” Drum Player turns back to Julie and she swallows.  

“No, I offered.  Let me see the music.”

“Okay, but you have like ten minutes!” Bass Player finally chips in with a surprisingly cheerful tone.  Guitar Player hands Julie what looks like a piece of notebook paper and her eyes skim the words and notes.  It’s feasible for sure, but she can feel the nerves prickling at her stomach.  Guitar Player leans into her space and she clocks how ridiculously attractive he is up close.  He gives her a smile.

“We alternative verses like this, see?  And I don’t know your range, but we can figure that out on the go.”  Julie gives him a small smile.

“Somewhere between mezzo-soprano and soprano.”

“We can work with that.” Guitar Player seems to vibrate with energy.  “Are you sure you wanna do this?”

“No pressure,” Bass Player adds.

“Like seriously, none.  We can just go home and cry,” Drum Player says.  Julie isn’t sure.  She really isn’t.  In fact, she’s pretty sure she should just run away and hope she never sees these guys again.

“I’m sure.”

Well, that’s that.

Guitar Player sends her a smile that looks genuinely like someone has funnelled sunlight into his body and Julie feels the nerves lift for half a second.  Then, they’re called to the stage and all of a sudden she feels like she could puke all over again.  Guitar Player grabs her hand and squeezes it.

“You got this.”

Julie files out with the rest of the band and she’s extremely grateful her friends aren’t sitting in her direct line of sight.  The piano is definitely worn out from use, but her fingers settle naturally on the keys and Julie tries to focus on the budding itch to perform in her stomach rather than the urge to throw up.  She’s supposed to start this song.  This song that she became aware of ten minutes earlier.  She catches Guitar Player’s eye and he nods encouragingly.

She presses down on the keys and opens her mouth. 

Sometimes I think I'm falling down

It's been a long time since I've been here, but I'm fine!

ニッポンも色々な大変な事に見舞われて、冒険者諸君の中にも元気を失っている人も多いと思う。 しかし、最も大事なのは今。今現在の瞬間を自分に悔いなく生きる事である。 それは人間をはじめ生物の個体の未来は常に不確定であるからである。 不確定な要素に巻き込まれた後、後悔しない為には常に現在を自分なりに大切に生きるという意識が大切である。 過去や未来で無く、今にゃ。今現在を大事にして欲しいにゃ！

I know that many of you adventurers have lost your energy due to the many difficulties in Japan.

As for the island in question, is it L''Avide?

There is an ancient myth about L'Avide.

A fairy whispered to two men and two women who were on good terms with each other.

But one day, a fairy whispered to them, and they turned into bitter enemies, as if their friendship had never existed.

This led to a lot of tragedies.

Since it is a myth, there is a strong possibility that some romantics have created this story with their thoughts on this mysterious island.

It is true that when I visited this island with Bernadette, there were many mysterious structures that seemed to have been used for fighting.

The author of this myth was probably convinced that there had once been a conflict between two groups on the island, and expressed that conflict lyrically in his myth.

But unfortunately, no one knows what exactly the conflict was, and I won't know until I do some serious research on L'Avide.

At first, I hated mathematics, but under the influence of chapter 2, I decided to try my best to understand mathematics.

When I opened my mind to numbers, I realized that it was incredibly interesting, and now I love mathematics.

The more I studied philosophy, languages, history, mythology, etc., the more I found similarities with Aria Te Raria, and the more interested I became in the world.

Hello, new viewers/followers.

If anyone is seeing this, then congrats! Have you found my blog. “Don't mind me, just passing through” is the best way to describe this thing. This was supposed to be a promoter for my fanfic/”writing testing grounds” account and to keep up with one of my mutual followers.  Here’s a common tag thing because there are some repeating topics/running gags.

The Count of Monte Cristo - A 19th century French novel that (for some reason) has a fandom. This is one of the prevalent topics because it’s surprisingly interesting. Sometimes it is tagged with “Spooky AU” in reference to a building snowball of an alternate storyline based on fan art I found and/or requested on a account test-run whim. Yes, you can request fan art on here if you can find the right people.

Incorrect Quote - This is what happens when a person finds a quote and says “hey, this can be applied to some characters I like”! I am one of these people. XD This can be applied to the topic above or otherwise. 

Writing Prompt Responses - Literally what it says. Any writing prompt that catches my fancy, I write a response on it. However, it appears that a few of them are more connected than you would think...

“Shower”/Music Thoughts - Not really shower thoughts as much as scenes that play out while listening to music. It could be a song recommended randomly or a song that I have discovered thanks to wandering in Broadway music territory for so long. Any other rambles not under this tag are just musings that I just felt like posting. 

Jekyll and Hyde - This is based on any musings on the 1990s musical, albeit not the 1990 concept album. These are few and far in-between.

“Five Nights” - An indie sci-fi “horror” game that, for whatever reason, has caught my attention. All one needs to know is that diner-owned animatronics have gone haywire, including Spring-trap the Rotten Rabbit, who is the main villain. All I can say is blame the book section at Wal-Mart for this one.  Oh, and I’m only doing stuff loosely based on it. No overly crazy, creepy stuff here. Undertale - Another indie game that I have never played but know something about. It’s not horror, but it includes “monsters”. If you have any questions, please see @calcium-cat. The fan community has expanded the story and world so much, I’m sure a simple search will be more confusing than relieving. Same goes for “Five Nights”, though the creator is to blame there. Mane 6 Redesign - In which the six main characters of the fourth generation of My Little Pony have been redesigned and given a brand new story to accompany them. This was a “for fun” thing inspired by many artists who have done the same thing. I have no idea if they have any alternate stories as well.

Ink Potts - An animatic series that has combined classic literature musicals with the same six characters plus a few extras. However, they might be getting of the horse-powered bandwagon so maybe wait for an update from me before checking them out. Besides, they wisely put discretions up if they knew a song/scene is going to get iffy...

And now, people you might see on my blog. I’m surprised any of them follow my blog, but okay.

@frosted-firefly/@rowan-of-the-ravenwood: A follower who I am collaborating with on the Spooky AU/Monte Cristo side of things. From personal experience, she is friendly and willing to talk. Her art is also very good, as you’ll see further in the blog.

@calcium-cat: Another follower that you’ll see Under-tale art from on my “Like” page. She is also friendly and easy to talk to. She is also writing a story on her own fanfic account, which I recommend you check out if you’re already into Undertale.  @writing-prompt-s: This is where I get my prompts from. I carefully select each prompt before typing, so not all of them that you see on my side is the only stuff they post. I don’t know them personally (same goes for firefly), but I respect their contributions to this site. 

Any other names: I just liked their posts and wanted to reblog. I have no idea about them personally, but I admired that one thing. Think like YouTube, but it’s written and not in a video.

Mr. Lawyer (2) - N. Horan Imagine

thanks so much for everybody’s support on “Mr. Lawyer”! after a whopping FIVE requests for a part two were sent to me, i felt it was only right for the story to continue and (maybe?) end on a happier note ? who knows ?? guess you’ll have to read and find out. here it is, part 2 of “Mr. Lawyer”

It had been a total of one week since her fight with Niall and due to her “failure of having an established online presence” (Y/N thinks of it more as an accomplishment) she had been named “Mystery Woman” by every celebrity gossip site that acquired the photos. In her younger years, Y/N never pursued the idea of posting “candid” photos portraying some nonexistent life she had seen most people claim to have. It was never in her disposition to be in the spotlight, something which her 24-year-old self was grateful for. It helped her maintain her confidence and focus on other aspects of her personal life like her work.

 Another thing she had taken for granted in her time of ignorance was the age of her boss, who was wise enough in her years to not seek out entertainment news on her television and guiltily watch it, and also take notice in how Y/N displayed herself in the office.

Her boss sought for people like her, Y/N discovered through an email her boss sent replying to the girl’s sudden ask of a week off due to “personal reasons” she would rather not explain but clued an injury in her excuse. Despite the vagueness of the plead, her boss commended her honesty and work ethic when giving her approval. Needless to say, the conversation concluded much better than the girl had imagined, and made her spirits lift somewhat. But the seven days of solitude were hard. On the first day, she woke up with her cheeks tight from dried tears and runny mascara. The swollen ankle complemented the look and also helped Y/N confirm that the night prior did indeed happen. She wasted the day on her couch with a bottle of wine, replaying the memories until they all became fuzzy and blended like that of a fever-dream one could not wake up from.

Day two was where she began questioning why it was so important for Niall to keep his identity such a secret. She remembers his answers to her that night, still. She could hear every twinge hitting his heart as he spoke his apology and gave his reasoning. Looking at all of the photos of both of them on her phone was unnecessary when her brain held every moment for her. The picture Niall took of her in a white button-down of his, panties just peeking out beneath and his mid-calf socks sagging down her ankles at she posed with one of his few very nicely made guitars. When they spent Christmas early at his house and exchanged gifts and kisses under a mistletoe, the camera on her phone caught glass-encased records Y/N never thought to mention, let alone paid any mind to.

She remembers a particular morning waking up to the sound of Niall humming a particular melody she secretly recorded solely because of how angelic the notes sounded with the water pattering against the porcelain to harmonize with it. She could not clear it from her head for the rest of the day and, upon bringing it up to him later on, Y/N recalls the shrug and innocent smile he gave when he told her he “made it up.”

By the end of the night, she was blaming herself for not seeing the signs sooner.

On the fourth day, she discovers that the photos of the debacle could not hide from everybody. Her mother called her that day to scold her, saying she had to find out what her own daughter’s boyfriend looked like through a Facebook post. When the expected questioning of why she was on the cover of a magazine at a grocery store was asked, Y/N lost all answers for herself and hung up the phone with a meek excuse to “explain later.”

The following day, her friend begins texting her incessantly with an update on why she thought Niall looked so familiar when she sent a photo to her a few days ago. At first, Y/N could only chuckle and shake her head, riposting if her friend had gotten in trouble with the law recently. Her friend sent a question mark back and went on to say she does not remember where she saw him. Now she was sending links to his music videos she happened to stumble upon that morning.

It was painful, but she watched them. She bought his album with little regret and listened to every single song, and then kept the most somber one she could find on repeat until her phone ran out of battery.

The week flew by fast, but Y/N could not say she was not thankful. She felt it was a sign of the world that her sulking was over. That morning, she felt that a regular at-home cup of coffee would not do and decided to start the week off right with her usual at the small café near her apartment. It felt like déjà vu walking through the door and hearing the small bell lightly tinkle above her. She was stood in line for five minutes, wearing a tee-shirt of another oldies band her little cousin would decree “vintage” when a tap arrived unannounced to her shoulder. She spun around, and the man behind her sent a kind smile and compliment her clothing shirt. Though the accent was still distinct, it was all too similar and had Y/N’s heart beating faster.

He was unbridled in his advances, asking what would seem like too soon to a watchful stranger if she was single. Normally, at seven in the morning on a Saturday (coffee or not), she would be firm in her stance and spew an answer out with no hesitation and regrets. But Y/N would be lying through her teeth to say that it went that way. It went quite the opposite actually and ended with Y/N stumbling over her words and managing to sputter out how her situation was “complicated.” It was so unlike her to answer even she was unsure of and left the girl asking herself in her spot if she had been sucked into a different dimension that night her love life all went to shit.

The man somehow convinced her to spare a few more minutes of her time as the two waited for their drinks after ordering. She composed her thoughts and better explained then that she had just broken it off with someone. She was going to mention that the “breaking it off” part might be temporary but was still jammed on where she stood with the situation. Hell, Niall had not made any form of contact with her since that night, so how is she to know if he is finding himself in the same place?

“I understand completely. Sorry if I was a bit forward back there, it’s just…”

“No, it is okay I get it. And if I weren’t so conflicted with things right now, I would probably say yes to date with you, but—”

Then, Y/N was floored as the man before her began to laugh. It was a combination of hysterics and a bit obnoxious in its tone, which left Y/n with furrowed eyebrows.

“Oh, no.” He held his hand up to her. “Do not get the wrong idea…”

“Y/N.”

“Y/N, I am already with somebody.” Once again, her forehead creased, and she was befuddled. “I am asking for a friend. He is kind of in the slumps at the moment because of this girl…it kind of sounds like you and him are in the same boat. I’ve been trying to see if any of my friends were up for meeting the guy and help him get over her—”

“By a one-night stand with a stranger,” She scoffs, disbelief now coating her face. “I hate to break it to you, but that is not how you mourn a relationship.” Y/N rolls her eyes and begins to pivot to see how much progress had been made on her drink.

“No, no! It is not like that at all, trust me! I just…I feel like just meeting somebody would take his mind off of it. Even if it does not go anywhere, the lad could use another friend. Especially one who understands what he is going through at the moment. And Y/N, you’re ticking every single box right now!

“What do you mean?” She spins around to face him. “As far as I know the only thing we have in common is our relationship status.”

“I happen to know he loves classic rock, specifical bands such as these.” One of his hands rise to the sleeve of your shirt and pinches the cloth, giving it a small tug.

“That all?”

“Well, you’re both pretty stubborn, too.” He murmurs. Y/N raises her eyebrows and sends a scoff in his direction. Before a biting comment could slip from you, your name was called. The man stayed nearby as you met the barista at the register for your total. As she reached for her pocket, she lets a few swears out beneath her breath from the absence of her wallet. The man notices this and swoops in immediately with his card in his hand.

“I got it—"

“No, forget about it.” Y/N interjects, turning to him. “You don’t have to do that.”

“No, I do actually.” He hands the barista his card before you could reject his offer once again. “Because you’re gonna do something for me.” He says, a satisfied smile gracing his lips as he pockets his card back into his wallet.

“Excuse me?” “Look, I’ll be having a get together at my house this weekend. Nothing big, just a few mates of mine coming over. But my friend is going to be there, so you need to come so I can introduce you.”

“Why would I agree to that?” Your hand wraps around the warm cup and brings it up to your chest.

“Because you seem like an honest gal. Someone who would return a favor and keep her word.” The compliment was sincere as far as she could tell. A few moments of silence fell between the two, and Y/N found her eyes bouncing between two-floor tiles in contemplation.

“This guy? Would…would you say he’s an honest person?” She was hesitant in her question, but the idea kept captivating her. As much as she wanted to deny it, she knew tonight would be no different than the last seven. She would still hear Niall’s laugh echoing in her head, and images of him flashing through her dreams in her sleep. None of the old methods she resorted to in college are working for her anymore.

“He’s the most truthful person I know.” Y/N looked up into the man’s gray eyes, swimming with hope. She wanted to feel like that again.

“What’s your name?”

“Lewis…Capaldi.” He answers. Y/N nods at the new information.

“Okay Lewis…” she proffers her free hand to him. “I’ll meet him. This one night only.”

“That’s all he’ll need, I swear.” Lewis exchanges his phone number with her, and without any further questions, they departed.

By the weekend, Y/N was finding herself flooded in regrets. She felt like she was betraying Niall in some way, despite no clear definition being set on their relationship since their quarrel. Tears were pricking her eyes on her drive to Lewis’s house at the thoughts of how hypocritical she was being. Not even two weeks ago had she blamed her boyfriend for not being honest and hiding from her, and here she was driving to a stranger’s house to meet a potential partner.

She knew that the information of Niall doing the same would make her ballistic with heartbreak. Even more, than she was feeling at this current point in time. Why in the world did she think this would be a good idea? She was only minutes away from Lewis’s front door when she hurriedly pulled over to the nearest gas station. Her hands were choking the steering wheel with strength so great her knuckles were becoming pale. Her heart was pacing erratically and felt uncontrollable. Screams were trying to crawl their way out of her throat, but she was determined to keep pushing them down with each nervous gulp. 

She had not felt this panicked since she excused herself to the restroom at the dinner place. She remembers the counter’s hard edge left deep, red lines in her palms from how hard she was gripping them, and she had to continuously throw her head back for fifteen minutes to keep the tears balancing in her eyelids from trickling down her face.

Maintaining her breathing was difficult, and almost seemed impossible when Lewis began ringing her cellphone. Her eyes locked on the small clock on the radio. She was nearly fifteen minutes late to a get-together she promised to be present at.

She answered the call, shaky hands, and a lump in her throat. She could only hope Lewis would do most of the talking throughout the call.

“Hey, you’re still coming over right?” He sounded urgent.

“Yeah...well—actually maybe not.” Y/N squeaked out in her shaky breaths. Lewis’s “what” was demanding and gave her the feeling of a child disappointing a parent.

“It’s just—I feel so…this doesn’t seem like a good idea, Lewis. I mean, I haven’t even spoken to the guy and he probably doesn’t even know I’m coming over.”

“Of course, he doesn’t! If I told him he wouldn’t have agreed to come over. But he’s starting to cave…been trying to call this girl all night and we’ve had to check on him and keep him distracted. You need to come over, please Y/N! We made a deal! Please, just five minutes. That’s all I’m askin’ of ya.”

Y/N bit her lip, unsure of how to respond. In her haste of guilt and impulsive movements, she ended the call with Lewis and tossed her phone into the passenger seat. Her hand reached to clutch the stick and her phone began vibrating again. It was face-up, illuminating the car with a photo of Niall’s face.

Her hand reached over and declined the call.

She put the car in reverse.

The fourth ring was interrupted with the sound of a voice asking to leave a message. Niall muttered a small “fuck it.” He rose from the couch, refusing to pay attention to the football match displayed on the large television his other friends were entranced in. His figure meandered into the kitchen silently, where he found Lewis glancing down to his phone.

“What?” Lewis looked up from his face, observing Niall’s uninterested expression. “No, come on lad, you got to stay longer. I just…ordered pizza!” His downtrodden mood did not keep a small chuckle from leaving Niall.

“Okay…I can come next weekend for pizza. I just don’t feel well, tonight.”

“Look, lad. I know some girl broke your heart but if she turned you down then clearly she was not worth it.”

“No, she was. She still is.” Niall claims, a stern tone overcoming his voice as his blue eyes pierce into Lewis, the mild irritation in them becoming apparent. They drop a few moments later, along with his hard expression softening. “I was an idiot.”

“Okay, I know that was not right of me to say since I do not know what happened. But you just…you have to stay. Just a little longer.”

“Why? What’s so important?”

“A friend is coming over that I want you to meet.” Lewis blurts. Niall absorbs his words, and also takes in the sheepish smile adorning Lewis’s face. Niall’s hand comes up to rub over his features as a sigh leaves him.

“Why…why would you—"

“Because you two are almost exactly alike. There are so many things you have in common.”

“Well, I had a lot of things in common with Y/N too,” Niall states, growing more frustrated by the second.

“I know, but…hang on. What’s her name?”

“Y/N,” Niall repeats, his heart sinking as her name fell off his tongue again. He missed how it felt good when he said it. A light knock on the door breaks the two away from the conversation, but both men meet each other’s eyes with knowing looks.

“Great! Absolutely fuckin’ wonderful. Tell me, what is so great about this girl, huh? Does she know almost every Springsteen song by heart? Can she recite scenes from awful movies verbatim? Will she agree to go out with me for six months only to end it because I lied to her about my entire fuckin’ life because I was a selfish, judgmental bastard? Tell me, is she gonna forgive me for it? Because that’d be the only difference between her and Y/N. And I’m gonna bet right now, whoever is behind that door won’t come fuckin’ close!”

“Niall—”

“In fact, let’s go see this bird! What brilliant girl did you bring for me to shut down, tonight hmm?” Niall strolled over to the door and swung it open, to see Y/N, her mouth agape and eyes wide. Lewis lived in a safe neighborhood, with beautifully constructed houses. But Niall knows the door is not soundproof and Y/N must have heard every single word.

“You mean that?” Her nose flared, and tears brimmed her eyes. It would have been painful for Niall to witness, but the way her lips curled up and her eyes brightened when she continued to gaze at him was the only tell he needed to know they were droplets of joy falling from her eyes. All Niall could muster was a nod, still in shock that she was stood in front of him. After regaining his composure, he cleared his throat, now gravely from his previous volume level he had not planned on reaching with Lewis tonight.

“Y/N, I am so sorry. I was—”

“I love you, idiot.”

“What?” Niall’s brows furrowed at her response. And his answer came in the form of her arms locking behind his neck and drawing his head down for their lips to finally connect. He was an idiot. But if Lewis’s words were true, he was as honest as idiots come. And how could she let that go?

Beepr Goes To Shows: Governor’s Ball 2021.

In this first installment of Beepr Goes To Shows, I spent all 3-days at this years Governor’s Ball to give you crowd coverage you deserve and concert recaps/reviews you want. Stay tuned for more show write-ups and other updates!

Freddie Gibbs and The Alchemist

What happens when you put two legends on the same stage? You get one hell of a fucking show. Freddie Gibbs and The Alchemist were on another level that Friday afternoon, delivering classics from Madlib collaborative albums (Crime Pays, Fake Names, Palm Olive, Thuggin), recent singles from Freddie (Big Boss Rabbit, Gang Signs), and all your favorite offerings from Alfredo (Baby $Hit, Scottie Beam, Something To Rap About). The braggadocious swagger Freddie brings to the stage is tempered by Alchemist’s suave production and generally reserved demeanor, making them a very balanced performance. Despite being an acclaimed producer, you get the sense that The Alchemist is there to support Freddie rather than make the performance about himself. Freddie’s natural humor shines through in between songs, cracking jokes while taking tokes and hitting a bottle of Hennessy. Chants of “Fuck police,” cheers for the Alchemist, and concert-goers belting choruses created a deafening atmosphere, rivaling some sold out indoor venues I’ve visited. To call Freddie a cult artist would be disrespectful of all the mainstream achievements (Grammy nominations, cracking Billboard Top 25s, etc), and yet for some reason, he remains on the fringes of superstardom. Part of what people love about Freddie Gibbs is his larger than life personality, as he has an authenticity about him that’s naturally charismatic. If there’s anything I can be certain about after that set, it’s that Freddie Gibbs and The Alchemist have undeniable chemistry and I hope they have more on the way.

Phoebe Bridgers

In January of 2018, a report from Nielsen Music identified that rap had surpassed rock in terms of overall music consumption. But Phoebe Bridgers will not allow her genre to go quietly into the night. She very well may be the next iteration of a rockstar. From her band all being in uniform, to the stage production, and most importantly, her diehard fans: Phoebe Bridgers is killing it in all aspects of the game. Apparently, I had been living under rock for quite some time as I only did a deep dive into her music when I saw her on the Governor’s Ball lineup announcement. How foolish was I? Phoebe has an incredible catalogue despite being only 27 (bolstered by her work with groups like Boygenius and Better Oblivion Community Center). Songs like Motion Sickness, Garden Song, and ICU feel more like Phoebe hosting a singalong, as the entire crowd is belting back each and every lyric at the top of their lungs with emphatic energy. Tracks like Kyoto also fall into that category, but there’s an immense rush of excitement as the brilliance of Bridger’s music blares through over the speakers for the chorus. Ballads like I Know The End are blissful moments of serenity, as I found myself swaying with my eyes closed in my little spot in the crowd. Her nonchalance in between songs is intoxicating, as it’s a beautiful contrast to her immensely emotive and personal performance. It’s so endearing to see past what’s on the outside and find an individual who profoundly cares about their work. What perhaps is most endearing about Phoebe’s performance is how she’s unabashedly herself: quips like “Fuck nihilism, too” are interjected in between songs, her outfit a glamorized rendition of the classic skeleton t-shirts. While I might have been late to the party in terms of the Phoebe Bridgers hype train, you can bet I’m going to be early to every one of her shows from here on out.  

A$AP Rocky

As Saturday night of Governor’s Ball was drawing near to an end, there were millions of individual conversations buzzing around in the crowd. But almost all of them were centered around one question: When will A$AP Rocky start? At 9:12pm EST, our question was answered, with a bang. Crowd surfing around in an inflatable car, bullhorn in hand, Rocky showed off some new sounds as unreleased tracks (Grim Freestyle amongst the slew of unreleased tracks) boomed over speakers. Mosh pits opened up left and right as the concert slowly evolved into a beautiful, New York block party-esque chaos. Hearing recent work like his features on Slowthai’s MAZZA and Famous Dex’s PICK IT UP were unexpected yet gratifying moments. But what really amplified the crowd was hearing some of the “older” radio hits. I can’t remember a time in recent memory when I’ve been as excited as when the first synths on LPFJ2 and Telephone Calls hit. Classics like Praise Da Lord and Yamborghini High ensured that there were no lapses in energy or excitement. Babushka Boi set the crowd ablaze, as the off-key notes intermingled in the beat acted as cues for the rowdy meter to kick it up a notch. Rocky even gave up some of his set to ensure the rest of the Mob was represented, as he had the DJ play Plane Jane by A$AP Ferg. The softer side of Rocky’s discography was met with equal anticipation as Sundress and A$AP Forever were met with exuberant cheers. Fully embracing his trippy side, after asking us if we liked hallucinogens, Rocky performed L$D to a roaring crowd (he also teased us with the unreleased Mushroom Clouds after asking us if we fucked with mushrooms too). During what felt like a showcase of the Harlem rappers’ ability to generate raucous ovation, the time had the crew informed Rocky his set had to be wrapped up. An earnest plea to keep it going was made, begging to at least get off Peso, but the euphoria was always going to be finite. It’s safe to say, anyone saying Rocky fell off is full of it.

Burna Boy

From start to finish, Burna Boy kept it hot. Bringing plenty of Nigerian flair to the CitiField air, I can safely say that Burna Boy’s set was one of the most enjoyable of the weekend. Even before he appeared, loud chants imploring him to take the stage could be heard ringing throughout the grounds. As his band and mom (who doubles as his manager) patiently waited, you could see them grinning and laughing as they knew we were in for a great show. Burna Boy then graced the stage and we were transported to another world, filled with laid back vibes, political protest, and triumph. Opening up with Gbona, it was apparent that the entire show was going to be electric. Hitting dance moves, grinning from ear to ear, it was obvious that Burna Boy planned on making a stellar first impression at the Governor’s Ball (he also earned major New York brownie points by giving us an animated performance of his velvety feature on Enjoy Yourself by Pop Smoke). Hearing some of my favorite songs live cemented them even further in the favorites category, as his performance adds another level of fun and personality. Collateral Damage, a beautifully subverted political protest anthem, felt truly harmonious as the entire crowd chanted the chorus with their fists in the air. As much as I love my AirPods, the heartfelt energy of both the crowd and Burna Boy I felt in the crowd during Anybody and Dangote could never be matched by speakers. Even the less upbeat songs (such as Wetin Man Go Do) he performed were met with incredibly cheerful reactions as. Live riffs from the band during some of his most popular singles added great spice for those who are familiar but equally exciting for new listeners. It’s apparent that there’s a great sense of camaraderie amongst the whole crew, that their main goal is to put on a memorable and joyous show. I can only hope that Burna Boy and the band make trips to the states more frequently.

Ellie Goulding

Have you ever felt the urge to forget everything that’s worrying you and just live in the here and now? Then you should go to as many Ellie Goulding shows as humanly possible. There’s a good chance you’re already familiar with some of her work (I’ll get to that in a bit), but it’s an entirely other thing to see her bring them to life. Hidden under the surface of a soft-spoken, singer-songwriter is a powerhouse performer, ready to give the show and attendees her everything. Watching her confidence grow during the set, seeing her come out of a shell that had likely developed as a result of not touring, was a beautiful sight to behold. In between comments about how grateful she was to be performing, quips about her outfit, you really got to watch her conviction begin to grow and take root. Anthemic at every instance, the crowd was equally ready to return the same energy Goulding graced us with. The only thing that was all over the place about her refined and poised performance was the eclectic mix of work she pulled from. From Lights (and yes, if you’re curious, that shit slapped) all the way up to her latest album, Brightest Blue, we got treated to the Ellie Goulding evolution set. Intermingling a solid slate of collaborations like Diplo’s Close To Me (I don’t know if I’ve ever sung along as fervently as I did for that one), Calvin Harris’ I Need Your Love (okay, I lied, this is the one where I lost my voice), and Major Lazer’s Powerful, there was a reference point regarding how they discovered Goulding for everyone in the audience. Hearing oldies like Aftertaste, Anything Could Happen, and Only You instantly transported me to simpler times, back when bills and deadlines seemed like an abstract concept. In another edition of music star leads a sing-a-long, the crowd could have taken over for Lights and Love Me Like You Do. Thankfully, we got to hear Ellie too. It’s a magical moment when a few hundred (maybe a full thousand) are all united by one common goal: to embrace the present and shower the performer with adoration in the form of knowing every lyric. Harmony amongst total strangers, tied together through a common love of music. Ellie Goulding gave us more than one of the best sets from the weekend, she gave us a sense of unity and togetherness unlike any other I’ve experienced.

Post Malone

When you find a superstar, with millions of fans and millions in the bank, that you feel like you can still crack open a crispy Bud Light, you’ve found something special. And we all know that Post Malone loves a cold one. The final chapter of Governor’s Ball 2021 ended with Post Malone’s Sunday night set, a perfect way to wind down the weekend. Opening up the set with an inquisitive “Hello?” to test out the mic, this show was one of the most authentic and down-to-earth concerts I’ve been to in quite some time. It almost feels like you’re just hanging out hearing some song ideas from your friend Austin Post, wearing some regular denim shorts and a “Where’s Waldo” style striped shirt, until the audible roars from the crowd of “Posty” remind you you’re at a headliner. Arguably the most larger-than-life aspect of Post’s set was his entrance on the stage, via a smoke-cloud suspended platform adorned with metal chains. With a healthy mix of beerbongs & bentley’s, Hollywood’s Bleeding, recent singles and old hits, Post Malone was showing us all of his repertoire. Chugging beers at the request of the crowd, checking in with all of us in between songs, calling for celebration and happiness, Post goes to great lengths to ensure that the crowd is with it and that everyone is having a good time. Tracks like Psycho were somehow both relaxing and energizing at the same time, as the chorus transformed the venue into an incredible echo-chamber. We also got to see how many friends Post has, as we got guest appearances from Young Thug (performing Goodbyes), Roddy Rich (gracing us with Every Season and The Box), and 21 Savage (to perform Rockstar, which Post Malone did his best to embody all night). With each feature, the crowd seemed to kick into another fear of excitement, but that’s not to say people didn’t lose it for some of Post’s solo work. Stay, which Post performed seated strumming an acoustic guitar, was as heartfelt as it could get in its stripped down state. Despite previously admitting to not being able to sing without autotune, you could see how much he cared about capping off the weekend right while performing that song (without autotune in an effort to be as real as possible). White Iverson and Congratulations were both barn-burners, as the whole festival grounds were chanting lyrics and bouncing along. After a very long weekend of raging and raving, Post Malone’s set managed to run through the whole gambit of festival emotions: joy, excitement, surprise, and relief. It’d be disingenuous to say anything other than Austin Post has mastered the art of headlining.
