Harry Potter Rec Fest Day 8 - Canon-Divergent

Like I said for Day 7, my OTPs mean that I'm spoiled for choice when it comes to canon-divergent fics for @hprecfest Day 7. So to offset the bummer that was Day 7, here's two Wolfstars and a Drarry with happy endings all around!

Okay so technically this could be canon compliant, I guess, but in this fic, you don't have to live through (most of) the tragedies that our poor boys suffer. This story is non-chronological and the little snippets, some only one line long, so perfectly crystallize the characters of and relationship between Sirius and Remus (as well as their relationships with others like James, Lily, and Harry), and string you along through the story given just enough information to anchor you in time and space but still feel floaty and timey-wimey.

I recorded this last summer for @harryjamespotterweek. I love a down-and-out Draco and this fic progresses so calmly and sweetly. No huge angst or tragedies, and @firethesound does an excellent job with dialogue, especially getting Draco's voice just right. The smut is hot and the ending is tooth-rotting, in the best way.

Last song: the horrible medley of opera, songs of the Jacobite rising, narrative ballads of the british isles, and 80s rock, with a smattering of the kind of pop song that gets played at a mall that's the background noise of my mind. but according to spotify the last song i actually heard someone sing was "non so più" from le nozze di figaro.

Currently reading: technically I'm at the very beginning of A Desolation Called Peace, but it's not quite working for me, and I can't tell whether it's me or it - i've been struggling to get into fiction recently, but also some of Martine's stylistic tics are working less well for me than they did in A Memory Called Empire. Also listening to Christopher Clark's Revolutionary Spring: Europe Aflame and the Fight for a New World, 1848-1849, which is pretty good, but I wish he'd distinguish more between when he's reporting on someone's position and when he's analyzing it.

Currently watching: ah. Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated. it's....genuinely not bad.

Current obsession: 17th - 19th century Europe & trying to get my god damn ice cream texture right.

They even brought up a full bath for him an hour after his guards silently deposited him in the room. With real soap, praise be to God.

Love in the Time of Laser Swords (Billy/Goody, The Magnificent Seven 2016) Bili and Goodnight met in a shack in a nameless settlement next to a downed Star Destroyer on a junkyard of a planet, where Bili was grimly knocking back shots of dubiously brewed alien moonshine and Goodnight was…well, Goodnight was hunting him down.

Care (Joe/Nicky, The Old Guard) Joe brightens. Nile tends to make her favorite comfort foods when it's her turn, and they'd rapidly become team favorites, too.

It's a Nice Desk (Joe/Nicky, The Old Guard) “Fuck me, do it,” Joe says, body singing with anticipation. And cries out when Nicky plants his feet, grips Joe’s hips, and gives him what he asked for.

Befriending (Billy/Goody, The Magnificent Seven 2016) “Please,” he manages to whisper, because fuck pride – though the noise Goody lets out in response makes it worth it anyway – and it does the trick again, because then Goody’s pushing in, huge hard unyielding pressure, and Billy’s going limp with relief the farther he gets inside, fucking finally.

Touch, Taste, Smell, Hear (Joe/Nicky/Nile, The Old Guard) It's not that he and Nicky have never taken a third person to bed. It's not even the first time they've slept with a fellow immortal. But this is Nile, new to them: already beloved, but new. Everything she does takes on a fascinating dimension.

This Story Is An Excuse To Picture Yusuf al-Kaysani In The Slave Leia Outfit (Joe/Nicky, The Old Guard) Merrick dies as gracelessly as he lived, eyes bulging and limbs jerking. Unfortunately, he also doesn’t have anything on him that could possibly free Joe from the damn chain. Not even a measly pocket laser.

Bow-Chicka-Bow (Joe/Nicky, The Old Guard) Instead, he gets Nicky bending down over him and dropping a sweet kiss onto his mouth. He pulls back before Joe can kiss him back.

Bare (Joe/Nicky, The Old Guard) “Amore mio,” Nicky groans, already close to losing himself after an entire day of suffering through low-level arousal. “You are never more beautiful than when you are like this.”

Red Leather (Billy/Goody, The Magnificent Seven 2016) Dozens of kisses and two lockpicked doors later, they’re deep enough in the building that the neon-strobed darkness of the club has given way to very un-atmospheric fluorescent lighting – the offices next door, abandoned after office working hours. Which suits them down to the ground.

(Apparently my current M.O. is writing exactly one fic per year, which is nothing but smut.)

anyway going around a lot of art galleries this week has reminded me that i really want to write the joe/nicky fic where joe is a new tour guide at the art museum with an aspiration to end up as a curator once he’s done with grad school, and one day at the end of his shift he meets the hot security guard who sometimes does nights.

and then he hears rumours from his colleagues that this guy has… crackpot theories about the art??? joe is like uh ok but also he doesn’t like their tone or the fact that security guards are banned from talking to museum patrons about the art. he’s like, note that down as things to discuss once we finally get this union recognised.

anyway of course it turns out that the security guard, nicky, has three quarters of a PhD in religious art history and he’s been communing with the art a lot and chilling out with it at night. “art speaks in many different voices,” he likes to say, mysteriously. joe is like, wtf, please marry me.

yes it’s very loosely based on the article at the paris review blog about the unicorn tapestries, but can you blame me???

Seeing a lot of Goncharov content but only real 70s movie heads will know that Spanish director Pere Portabella was meant to be making a behind-the-scenes documentary of the film which turned into a whole other thing. It's called GOMORRA CALLS.

Scorsese is in it and so are his parents, for some reason. At first you're just like oh this is cute, they're bringing food to the set, taking an interest in what's going on. But it becomes this quite... Creepy reality-bending thing? His mother keeps cryptically referring to weird telephone calls they've been getting at home, and his dad keeps moving things on the set, you can only see what he's doing if you spend a lot of time watching him at the edge of the frame while someone else is talking. And sometimes they'll get to the set in the morning and find things left in the wrong place, there's a weird smear on a camera lenses, one of the actors has lost half the pages from the copy of the script they've been learning from.

I think the idea was meant to be that they're being hounded by the realfe mafia for making the movie. But it almost seems like they're being haunted by the ghosts of mafia members at times. Like, Scorsese's hotel room will be freezing cold, and he's being sent anonymous messages at the front desk in a way that just doesn't make sense. He says, "I'm not sure if someone is trying to stop this movie... Or if they just want to be part of it. If they want to look at a prop in the wrong place and just say, hey, that was me."

At the time of its limited run in the US, Scorsese said he didn't really know what Portabella was making, fueling theories that the film was true documentary and not fictionalised. But it's listed as fiction on Portabella's Wikipedia page now, and the prevaing theory is that it must be made up. It's not been included on any of the Goncharov DVD or Blu-Ray packages but it was supposed to be a Criterion Channel exclusive last year... It never showed up, and there are rumours it's to do with audio licensing issues. But there's a VHS rip floating around out there if you know where to look.

literary wolfstar recs part 2 (modern classics/post-2010)

hallo! Okurr so this is officially part 2 of my “literary” (by which I mostly just mean fucking beautiful) wolfstar recs & it covers the various post-2010 gems that I’ve managed to discover/read thus far. Posted this to reddit back on Remus’s bday because I’m a big nerd & thought that would be cute, but I’ve tidied it up just slightly since then bc the original post was an utterly a spur-of-the-moment thing & riddled with typos, etc.

As a general disclaimer, I abandoned fandom in like 2009-ish & have only been back for a few months so I can only imagine I’ve probably missed SO many lovely stories/authors (!!) and can only beg their forgiveness in advance. Still, wanted to post what I've got so far & hopefully one day I shall update or add a part 3 when I’ve had more time to read/explore contemporary ("contemporary") fandom.

And now, in no particular order whatsoever – modern wolfstar classics <3 -

we build our own unfolding & longsdune by @imochan.

Already recced imchan on the last list, I know, but these two were written post-2010 (meaning I just discovered them within the last 2 or 3 months lol) and are fucking beautiful, so. "We Build Our Own Unfolding" is a post-Hogwarts get-together about the death of Remus's mother, and "Longsdune" is an atmospheric multi-era fic that centers around an abandoned train station. Anyway, again, everything imochan writes is painfully gorgeous.

a history of sexuality, vol. 1 by istajmaal.

I think this is the author's only wolfstar fic but ohmygosh, it's so charming and also just achingly lovely. As the title would imply, it focuses on Sirius's sexual awakening & schoolboy crush on Remus but - God. It's just beautiful and heartbreaking and perfect. (Very minor spoiler alert but this fucking line: “Sorry I can’t make you feel normal” / “You’ve driven me so mad I don’t even care.” Kills me every time.)

This is such a beautiful and original take on the Prank, very dreamy (both in vibe and literal content, lol); Snape utilizes legilimency & dream magic in his attempts to discover what the Marauders are hiding. Walburga's also a creepy legilimens in this one, and ever since reading this fic I truly can't imagine her any other way.

grounded (& the rest of the listeneise series) by @yeats-infection aka fluorescentgrey.

Okay so fluorescentgrey has written SO many wolfstar fics and as of yet I still haven't read the vast majority of them but, but. I would be willing to bet that they are all amazing, because what I have read of hers so far is so stunningly beautiful and distinctive. I recced "Grounded" because it's a personal favorite, a Grimmauld Era canon-ish story with so many unbearably and achingly gorgeous lines, but it's actually the third part in a series (Listeneise) & every story in the series is wonderful.

EXILE/RETURN (& the rest of the empire falling series) by @polytony aka zambla.

This one's actually the last part of a series (Empire Falling), and everything in the series is beautiful and absolutely worth reading, but this one happens to be my favorite so it is now the one I'm linking here :). This is a non-magic AU and homage to Derek Jarman; Remus is a Jarman-esque artist who dies of AIDS and Sirius his surviving partner, who reads Remus’s old journals and reflects on their lives together as he travels Wales. The writing is fucking beautiful and it HURTS.

Such a sweet, charming premise (in which Remus unwittingly becomes the go-to helping-hand for "all things monthly" at Hogwarts) and the prose is wonderfully sharp and clean. And the PINING. This fic is pure UST/pining/etc., and it's so, so lovely.

between the moon and the stars by llassah.

A beautiful, imagistic, atmospheric get-together fic, in which James is distracted and Remus and Sirius spend most of the summer before seventh year attached at the mouth. This one is just so pretty.

Ahhh, the Sirius-visits-Remus-over-the-summer fic to end all Sirius-visits-Remus-over-the-summer fics. A charming, lovely, gorgeously imagistic get-together story (in which Remus and Hope Lupin are both, like, adorably granola). I mean, what else is there even to say here. This story is beautiful and happy and just, wow.

all manner of wolves & leave the children behind by @montpahrnah aka montparnasse.

Montparnasse is another one who has apparently written a LOT of wolfstar and I am just one busy human who has still not read sooo many of her fics, but they're probably all amazing because her prose is truly beautiful. "All Manner of Wolves" is a short sweet little first-kiss fic, and "Leave the Children Behind" is a long, beautiful Lie Low at Lupin's story. Again, her prose, her imagery/descriptive language, her use of metaphor . . . utterly stunning.

of witness testimony & in lieu of beaujolais by @aeridi0nis.

Omg ANOTHER author with so many fics that I've yet to read, but istg one day I will because her writing is so original and gorgeous - atmospheric and richly imagistic, full of creative metaphors, I mean - I could go on. I love everything I've read by her. "of witness testimony" is this lovely and funny and yet PAINFUL, utterly painful story from Peter's POV, in which he observes (and the other oblivious Marauders do not, lol) Sirius's immense affection for/growing attraction to Remus; "in lieu of beaujolais" is a charming post-Hogwarts story in which Remus and Sirius get a flat and sometimes hook-up and spend quite a lot of time misunderstanding each other/talking around their feelings.

Okay this is actually a graphic fic/comic/etc. (so, pictures + words!), and probably I was the last person on earth to discover it, but anyway, it's haunting and beautiful and I can't let it go unrecced.

An era-shifting (mainly post-Halloween & Lie Low at Lupin's) fic with, just, such lovely writing, and so much hurt, and - ah. Featuring an epigraph of obscure contemporary poetry and Lyall Lupin as a somewhat reserved but actually fucking amazing father. This story is just gut-punchy and achy and gorgeous.

THE FIRST SCENE. This story, this fucking story. I must rec it because it contains the most stunningly PSYCHO characterization of eleven-year-old Remus, and I cannot even. That freaking first scene has become one of my all-time favorite fanfic moments *ever.* Anyhow the story features various crucial bites in the lives of Remus & Sirius. Also, it is lovely and angsty and tender and so very good. And another author with so many wolfstar fics that istg one day I will read! Because this.
