This scene is so weirdly alluring to me.

What’s meant to be a fairly standard fantasy sequence (from what I remember) has a lot more symbolism going for it than you’d initially expect. I’m gunna go full the-author-is-dead on this one INCOHERENT TANGENT WITH A LACK OF A CLEAR THESIS GO

To me the arcade setting is symbolic of innocence, youth and escapism. This childlike mise en scene is being utilised to explore the dynamic of Jake and Roses relationship. The use of a two-sided tabletop arcade machine as a central prop is clearly emblematic of their (more specifically Jake’s) innocence and childhood as a whole being lost to their rivalry. Video game iconography represents competitiveness, specifically how Jake and Rose are destined to continue playing the same game of cat and mouse. Moreover, arcades being a place for leisure and escape exemplifies their desire to break loose from their circumstances.

The concept of a rite of passage is only reinforced with Rose’s activation of the jukebox, a device often associated with the rise in teen culture in America. With this connotation in mind, the initiation of the music evinces Rose’s maturity greatly surpassing Jake’s. Rose inserting the coin before Jake even enters the building also shows how her innocence was long gone before Jake’s involvement in her life. Moreover the fact neither of them activate the game on the table they’re occupied at indicates that this ‘game’ they’re playing is completely out of their control. I also like to think this scene is foreshadowing how she is literally going to change her tune on dragons (ba dum tss🥁)

Despite their maturity, their status or identity, they are both equal and see eye to eye - unlike their ancestors before them. While games are designed to have the same form and structure every single time you play it, only the players can change the outcome.

Though the specific use of anachronism with the retro arcade cabinets is lost on me. Okay now that I think about it, this stylistic device only further accentuates the centuries long conflict between the huntsman and the dragon race.

When viewing the motif of a fan through an anachronist lens, the fans serve more as a western and modern translation of a traditional fan. This appliance clearly represents the interplay of the status of a Huntsclan member and being a Dragon in their relationship. Not only do fans connote sophistication, social status and romance - all those traits relating to Rose but also their relationship as a whole. Furthermore, in a Japanese context (yes I'm aware that Jake is Chinese jus let me yap) fans are associated with cross-cultural exchange which the highlights the star-crossed forbidden aspect of their love. Additionally in Victorian era fans were used to non verbally communicate romantic interest. While idk much about each movements specific meaning I choose to believe its just to visually indicate that Rose is romantically interested in Jake wow who would've known XD.

I want to say the glass of water could symbolise how

Rose's longs to control her destiny much like how water is used to control our bodies temperature. Also accentuated with the way she doesn't drink the water but only applies it against her skin

She's out of her element/ doesn't belong. Water also connotes adaptability and survival. Maybe reflecting her survival against odds (odds being a Dragon hunter bein with her half human half dragon lover) (if that wasn't obvious haha)

Or if we continue with the rite of passage stuff, seeing as water is associated with rebirth, the interaction with water but not direct contact can be foreshadowing how her life is about to change seeing as well .. well you know dragon hunter.. half huma-

I was rewatching Amdrag after years and it struck me that Rose is always saying- "you can't save me Jake" (half baked and the academy), "Jake, let go" (Homecoming), "Jake it's too late let me go!" (Hong Kong Longs) but Jake just never gives up on her does he. He always saves her even if she thinks she doesn't deserve saving. While this does tell me about how much she loves him. It also sadly tells me about what Rose thinks of her self worth compared to jake.

they shoulda given her more episodes!!! both she and fred nerk were two characters i would’ve loved to see more of cause they had a lot of potential. so yeah i could see it working but tbh they’d need to write in a long arc if they’re gonna go w her and not rose

Regarding amdrag, what do you think about Jake and Rose's relationship?

Oh my gosh. So, Rose and Jake are probably the cutest couple of the 00s. Jake just loves her so much. He’s a total player when it comes to all the other girls he brings to dances and stuff, but when it comes to Rose, that act is completely dropped. One instance that stands out is from pretty early on in the series during the school dance when he goes to check on Rose and she says to him “Brad says the only reason he asked me out tonight was so he could dance with the prettiest girl in the room. I guess he got his wish.” and Jake just takes her hand and replies “Come on, I wanna dance with the prettiest girl in the room.”It’s just so cute. I wish them both all the happiness in the world.

Secret Quartet thing. Do you think LB and CN after meeting AmDrag now know of the magical society present in Paris? And does Fu know of it and them of him?

Hi, Anon! I’d like to think how much Ladybug and Chat Noir know about the magical society in Paris would be highly dependent on how they met the Am Drag. If it was just him, or just him and his family, or just him and Fu (Dog), or otherwise not him in the middle of some dragon business with some also obviously-magical creature, then there’s a possibility of the larger magical society remaining a secret. They might find out that dragons are real enough, but they wouldn’t necessarily discover anything beyond that.

They’re using magic, but they’re still human. Technically, they shouldn’t be allowed to know anything more than necessary. (I mean, they shouldn’t be using magical objects or anything like that at all, because I don’t think the Dragon Council would be overly happy that humans are running around with extremely powerful magical objects, but there’s a reason the dragons don’t know much of the Miraculous in any of my SQ crossovers; I think they play their cards pretty close to their chest.) I firmly believe Tikki and Plagg would know everything, even if the dragons know next to nothing about them (the kwamis have longevity on their side if nothing else). I do not believe they would be inclined to tell everything—or even anything more than they have to.

I think (Master) Fu would know something of the magic society. He’s been around a long time, been around magic a long time, and wouldn’t dismiss things as easily as other humans. He’d see things, and he���d suspect. He may not have more than suspicions, but he’d have solid enough suspicions to be able to keep the Miraculous safe. (I am not inclined to believe he’d be particularly eager to hand the Miraculous over to anyone, let alone some dragons in human form that show up and demand them.) He’s used to hiding, and Wayzz would help with that, which could also be why the dragons wouldn’t necessarily know of him, either. At least, if they know of the Miraculous, they likely know someone Guards them, but they probably have less to go on than Hawk Moth. They probably wouldn’t have known the Miraculous were in Paris until they were suddenly being used again.

Secrecy is such a big thing in both universes—especially ML, seeing how Spud and Trixie (and Rotwood, and Brock, and the Huntsclan (or at least 88 and 89), and, at the series’ end, Jonathan and Rose) all find out about the magical world and nothing is done to address that after Jake doesn’t give Trixie and Spud the potion. I just don’t see them telling each other their secrets, particularly since Adrien doesn’t find out about Master Fu for a while after Marinette discovers the truth. He didn’t make an exception for the woman he loved, either. He is doing his best to remain undetected while keeping an ear to the ground to keep the Miraculous out of danger.

All that being said, Jake would talk if not given a strict warning against it (and even then, he’d probably let a few things slip), and Marinette and Adrien would certainly be curious. But I don’t think Marinette and Adrien would volunteer any information about Master Fu—just telling Jake, if he keeps asking, that they found their Miraculous one day—or even about the kwami if they could specifically avoid it, though someone with Jake (Gramps, Fu Dog, etc) might know enough to ask, or possibly be able to sense the kwamis’ magic.

I don’t really think all the cards would be put on the table unless it became absolutely necessary, such as someone from the magical world stealing one (or many) of the Miraculous (possibly or possibly not working with Hawk Moth, potential plans for double-crossing aside), and the others needing to follow the trail to get it back. They would probably try to keep back what seemed to be ‘unnecessary’ information, up until the point it became clear that the information was very necessary, and then everyone would know everything. (How much of the ‘everything’ makes it back to the Dragon Council would be another matter entirely, and a certain potion would no doubt be brewed for the thief—tweaked, as necessary, to account for any inherent countering magic said thief may possess.)

I have been enjoying your American dragon jake long fanfics and I wanted to say that your writing is utter perfection. Thank you for taking out the time to contribute to the small fandom. I just have two questions I wanted to ask you:

1) What do you think of the Danika and Jake pairing in the show?

2) Do you have any plans to expand the "Forever Amdrag" world? Like what happens after "Hallowed Huntsmistress"?

I don't really think about it too much, to be honest. Rose was gone, they were young, and it made perfect sense that Jake would try to move on. I don't think it's any secret, though, that Rose is my favourite character and Danika could have been perfect in every conceivable way and I wouldn't have cared about her either way.

No, not at this time. It was something that I wrote a very long time ago that I considered finished after "Hallowed Huntsmistress". It's not something I'd never say never too, I just don't really know what else there would be to add. At this time, the only one that I'd think about expanding/doing a sequel to would be "Operation Defect" and that's because it's definitely designed to have a sequel.

I very rarely like the love interest character in cartoons. KP was an exception, but I’m not super fond of Jake/Rose (AmDrag), Danny/Sam (DP), or Zak/Wadi (TSS). And it’s got nothing to do with the girls themselves, because as characters I absolutely adore them!

IDK, maybe it’s feeling like romance is always forced into these shows.
