In which: Nick gets his wisdom teeth removed and his brothers and Jasper have to take care of him.

Warnings: Drugs, a TON of dialogue

“Are you nervous?” Chris asked, in a teasing tone. Both him and Matt have already gotten their wisdom teeth removed, now today would be Nick’s turn.

“Yes, I’m nervous! Who wouldn’t be?!” Nick snapped, trying to calm his nerves before going into surgery.

“It’ll be alright, you won’t even feel a thing.” Jasper comforted.

“Yeah but my mouth will hurt like hell after.” He complained.

“It’ll be fine. You’ll get through it. You can do this.” The boy said, gently grabbing onto Nick’s hand.

“You’ll be fine! Time will fly by and you won’t even it happened until you’re off the anesthesia.” Matt chimed in.

“That’s exactly what I’m worried about! I don’t want to be acting weird afterwards.” Nick responded.

“You’re appointment is in five minutes, we should go in and get you signed in.” Chris suggested.

Nick sighs, opening up the door and getting out. “Let’s go then, I just want to get this over with.”

They easily get signed it and they wait in the chairs until a lady comes in and calls for Nick. He sighs again and gets up.

“Wish me luck guys.” Nick muttered, shoving his hands in his pockets before walking up to the lady.

They make small talk while they’re walking to the room. When they enter, he was instructed to lay down in the chair while she looks at his teeth.

“Okay, this is only going to be a little poke. It’s going to numb your gums so you won’t feel the procedure while you’re asleep.” She claimed, putting a needle into his mouth and injecting the liquid, then doing the same of the other side of his mouth.

“Good, good.” The surgeon muttered. “Now this is the anesthesia, close your eyes, relax, and count backwards from ten.” She instructed, holding up a different needle to his forearm. Soon, he drifted off from consciousness.

When he woke up, everything was blurry and lights were bright. He adjusts and sits up, everything moving in slow motion but still not being able to process anything around him.

Chris looks up from his phone, seeing Nick was awake. “Hey Nick.”

“Huh?” He asked cluelessly, looking around until he spotted Chris. “Hey Matt, my mouth feels soooo weird.”

“It’s Chris actually.” He corrected, standing up. “Let me go get Matt and Jasper real quick. Hang tight.”

“Sorry…” Nick muttered, looking down at his hands.

“Hey, it’s alright. Your vision is probably a little messed up.” Chris replied, rubbing his shoulders for comfort.

Chris was only gone for a moment, and when he returned he brought Matt and Jasper with him; just as he said he would. Nick perks up at seeing Jasper, his spark suddenly being brought back.

“JASPERRR!” Nick exclaims, throwing his arms up, but then dropping them immediately. “Woahhh, my arms feel heavy…”

“Alright, let’s go.” Jasper said, grabbing Nick’s hands and pulling him off the chair.

“Slow down! I’m dizzy.” He exclaims, stumbling in his grip.

“I’m not even moving, hun.” The boy laughs, holding onto him so he wouldn’t fall.

“I don’t like this feeling. It’s like an out of body experience.” Nick demonstrates, clinging onto Jasper and looking around the room. “And I want my bed.”

“The sooner we get out of here, the sooner you get your bed.” Jasper confirmed, almost dragging him out the room and down the hallway, back to the waiting room.

“I told you to slow the fuck dowwwnnnn!” He exclaims, tripping over nothing but air.

“Sorry hun, I just can’t stand being here any longer. I want you to get comfortable and get some rest like you’re supposed to.” Jasper says, stopping so Nick can get his grip again.

In the car, Matt drove, Chris sat in the passenger seat and Nick and Jasper sat in the back, per usual. “Jasper, everything is spinning, it’s making me dizzy and everything is moving in slow motion. I don’t like it.” Nick slurred, laying his head on the curly haired boy’s shoulder as he cluelessly gazed at the ceiling.

“That’s normal, don’t worry. It’ll wear off.” Jasper claimed, rubbing his arm for comfort.

“You’re so high.” Chris stated with a giggle, looking behind them.

“HIGH?!” Nick snaps his head towards him before suddenly calming down. “Twenty years sober for nothing.”

“You didn’t smoke or take anything. It was so you wouldn’t feel anything during the surgery.” Matt explained. “And besides, you aren’t even sober, you were smoking weed last week.”

“Surgery? What did you guys do to me?” He slurred, over exaggerating hand gestures. “Wait…if I’m high, does that mean my eyes are red?” He pulls on his under eyes to show more of his eyeballs.

“No, they’re still white.” Chris answered, recording.

“They didn’t give you marijuana, Nick. It was anesthesia.” Matt adds.

Nick pulls out his phone and turns on his camera, looking at his eyes. “If I’m gonna get high it might as well have been weed.” He sighs, putting his phone back in his pocket and laying on Jasper once again. “I want my bed.”

“You’ll get your bed, we’re almost home.” Jasper whispered, kissing the top of his head.

“Was there a lot of blood?” Nick wondered.

“What?” The other questioned, confused.

“During the surgery. Was there a lot of blood?”

“No, there was barely any. But, you are still bleeding in your mouth. That’s why you have the gauzes, it helps stop the bleeding.” Jasper confirmed, trying to be as reassuring as possible.

“I don’t like blood.” Nick comments.

“We know you don’t.” Chris responds.

“This car makes me feel sick.” The redhead said in a daze, bouncing his leg and slightly shaking.

“Hey, hey, calm down.” Jasper instructs, holding Nick’s hands. “I know you want your bed and you don’t like how you’re feeling but we’re almost home and you’ll feel better.”

After a few minutes of Nick panicking and everyone else in the car trying to comfort him the best way they can, he finally calms down and Matt finally pulls into their driveway.

Once they’re inside, Nick and Jasper go into his bedroom and lay down on his bed. “I’m so sad.” He comments.

“Why’s that, hun?” Jasper asked.

“I don’t know. It’s just…editing is starting to get stressful but I can’t edit now because I can barely move fingers. I’m so tired and I want to sleep but not tired enough to actually sleep, and I hate sleeping as well! An—and sometimes I’m worried that I’m not enough and I’m just a waste of space. Maybe I’m not funny, and I don’t look good with my red hair, and that I’m not good enough for you even though I’m trying my best. I don’t know how much longer I can actually try without giving up. Everything is just becoming too much and I just want to relax and take a break for once and to spend time with you without being busy or stressing about videos or editing. And I love talking but my mouth is starting to hurt from these gauzes or my “surgery” that I apparently got done without me knowing, which I don’t know why you’d do that to me! But my mouth is hurting from it and I’m always talking and always loud but now I won’t be able to be loud anymore. Sometimes, I’m really insecure about my voice because I have a loud ass voice and yell everything without meaning to!” Nick vented, his rant almost turning into nonsense.

“Well, you have a break right now. You’re on break for the whole month, no editing, no filming, nothing. And you’re not a waste of space. You’re really funny, I’ve never laughed harder with anyone but you, you look handsome with your red hair and mullet, and you are more than enough for me. You are everything I’ve ever wanted, and I love you so much. If it makes you feel better, I love your loud ass voice.” Jasper claimed, laying down next to him and holding him close. “Also, you chose to get that surgery. We can’t force you to do anything.”

“You think I’m stubborn?”

Like I mentioned in an old post, will and LJ went on a lot of self discovery adventures for Will.

It was always will's dream to become a popular killer like Jeff but sense he couldn't actually bring himself to kill someone, he would doubt himself a lot and would sometimes just be so upset or angry at himself

Will: maybe coming to the underworld was a mistake.. I shouldn't have come here...

LJ: come on bud! There's gotta be something here you're good at!

They had literally tried many things.

Will worked for a surgeon for literally a day before he got fired. He couldn't bring himself to dissect someone. Yes he had seen dead bodies before out on the street but he couldn't bring himself to be the one to actually commit to doing it

He also tried to be a bounty hunter/hitman but, ended up quitting immediately after he was told to kill a family

He even worked at a black market that was hiring someone to just care for the oragans they sold. It was going pretty well but, lets say it was will's first time seeing an actual beating human heart

Will: what else could I be good at?!? Everything here involves killing! And I can't even kill someone if it depended on my damn life...

LJ: you could still try for your dream of being a slender proxy!

Will: but being a proxy involves killing! Maybe I should just go back to the human world... I don't even have my mark! I didn't get a permanent smile like Jeff or red bleeding eyes like ben!

Amari: I don't have any cool marks either!

Will: but atleast you got skulls shapes on your eyes! I didn't get anything! Maybe I just wasn't meant to be here...

Amari hated seeing will so upset. She knew his dream was to work for slenderman, and obviously, she wanted him to achieve it. She got lucky and worked for him from time to time, so she was sure she could talk to slender and see if will had a chance.

How he met slenderman

Amari went to see her boss a few days later. AKA slenderman. She explained to him his situation and, he actually wanted to meet him!

Once they got there, masky did the regular check for weapons on him (it's normal for them to check new people that go into slenderman's meeting room just to make sure of any weapons or suspicious items)

Will was calm but was holding in his inner fanboy.

"I can't believe I'm seeing slender's most valuable proxy!!! Holy shit!!!"

LJ wasn't all that excited sense he already knew pretty much every pasta and knew what it was like living in the mansion/manor.

LJ: "what a hassle...."

LJ wasn't really aware of all the dangers the proxies tried to prevent. He just saw it as a way to show off their wealth and to think they were better than others

Once they were clear, masky took them to the meeting room

Even if will wasn't sure if he could get a chance working with slenderman, there was one thing he was definetly certain of.

No way he was gonna waste his visit to the slender mansion and NOT get their autographs.

Will: um....could i get your autograph please?

Masky: oh, yes

Once they got in they were immediately greeted by slenderman

"Glad you came here william, please, take a seat"

William was so excited by seeing slenderman in person but was also terrified about what he would think of him.

Will became really shy and nervous while talking

Slenderman: so i heard you were interested in working with me later on but you had a few doubts on your own abilities, could you tell me more?

Will: i um....*fidgeting with his fingers*

LJ: he wants to be a proxy but he has trouble actually killing someone. So we wanna know his chances of actually becoming one

Slenderman: ah I see, well I'll have to look at some other assets, do you have any school documents?

Will: *nods and takes out a folder with his school papers*

These kind of meetings were actually pretty common so slenderman already knew what to look for in school documents

Will's grades weren't that good tbh

He had many subjects he struggled with. On his report cards, pretty much every subject had D's and C's, and the occasional F's. Only is P. E he had a B.

Slenderman usually looked for atleast a B average

Though the only straight A's that will got, were in chemistry

Slenderman: I see you're proficient in chemistry, how come that's the only subject you get A's in?

Will: well um.... It's pretty much the only subject that I like....

Slenderman: may I ask what your under realm mark you for when you arrived here?

Will: i didn't get anything...

He opened up a locked drawer on his desk and took out a heavy book and went through the pages and stopped at one with a picture of a hand with lines

Slenderman: may I see your hand?

LJ and Amari were extremely confused.

Amari knew pretty much the process of these type of meetings but when she was applying as an apprentice for slenderman, slender didn't ask to see her hand like he did with will

Once slender was done checking will's hand, he looked through more of his records

LJ: um.... So what do you think? He has a bit of potential right?

Slenderman seemed lost in though for a second but replied

"William, have you ever took any.... Magic classes or considered taking one?"

The three of them were surprised.

Like, magic? They knew that magic existed in the underworld but why would he think will would Want to study it?

Magic is a really complicated subject and depending on what element you were granted or want to control, it takes a lot of discipline and training and it is rarely recommended to the top students at the institution sense it was pretty much college level

LJ: why do you ask that?

Will: yeah I mean... I'm barely passing and I don't know if my grades are even good enough for me to graduate this year.

Slenderman: well i don't know how you didn't see this before but, look

Slenderman turned the book to their direction

LJ and amari were shocked

LJ: will you?!?

Will: *looking at the book and at his hand* wait....holy shi-i mean oh my god! I have powers?!

Slenderman: i looked through your records and i see you're part of the grossman family.

LJ: uh yeah he had a great grandpa but how does that explain this? He never had any sort of contact with magic

Slenderman: maybe not him exactly but, she did

Slenderman pulled out a picture from isaac's record folder (all demons and rulers from hell and the under realm have a record of their citizens) and pulled out the picture of a woman

Slenderman: she's ida grossman. Isaac grossman's great grandmother. She was killed for practising witchcraft. It would explain why will was granted magic here in the under realm.

LJ: sense he has this power, how come i never saw it before? I've been with him ever sense he was born!

Slenderman: well his power is still undeveloped sense he never had any proper training or took any classes. He has the mark on his hand but if he wants to actually use his abilities, he'll need to start practicing.

LJ now understood, and was happy for will

LJ: how can he start?

Slenderman: well,i have a proxy named sherry that knows about this, she could be will's tutor. Also I have been really interested in getting an apprentice with magical abilities but it has been difficult finding one, but if will wants to work with me then..

Slenderman took out an apprentice application

Slenderman: I could take him in as my personal sorcerer

LJ: well, what do ya say bud? Do you wan-

Will: yes!!!!!

Will didn't even think twice on his answer. Of course he wanted to work as slenderman's apprentice in magic.

He felt like his life had literally no direction but now everything was changing. He felt more confident than ever

LJ: do these classes have a price or somethin'?

Slenderman: it's usually 50 per class in a normal school but it depends if my proxy wants to charge for them or not sense she teaches them individually.

Will: oh....

Amari: ah don't worry i can pay for them!

Will: you don't gotta do that!

Amari: it's fine! You're my friend, we should help each other out

Slenderman: so I'm guessing that it's settled then?

Will: yeah!

Slenderman: alright then, I'll just need a signature of your parent or guardian on the application

LJ gave his signature

Slenderman: thank you. Well you're ready to go. All you need to do now is finish your last month at the institution and once you're done, I'll have amari bring you here again to start your training.

Will: yes! Thank you! Um one more thing, could I get your autograph sir?

Slenderman: oh yes of course!

Once slenderman signed his notebook they thanked him and were free to go

What is Hernia Repair Surgery?

Mostly a general surgeon performs hernia repair surgery in an outpatient surgical centre or in a hospital.Generally the surgery can be implemented both in adults and children and it takes less than an hour or two.

For undergoing Hernia repair surgery there are no specific contraindications. Relative circumstances under which patients have to do addition preparation before undergoing any surgery process includes:

Obesity

Current tobacco user

History of blood clots

How to Prepare for Hernia Repair Surgery

Lets see the instructions your surgeon may provide you after you have scheduled a hernia surgery repair.

Instruction that may include:

Keep your dressing with loose-fitting clothes on the surgery day.

Avoid taking certain medications for a period of time before surgery that can be any medications like aspirin or NSAIDs

Avoid eating for a period of time before surgery.

Recovery

Try Tylenol or if necessary use your prescribed opioid as directed to control pain.

Get up and walk around five to six times per day to prevent any blood clot after surgery

Do not get involved in any painful or strenuous exercise for four weeks for laparoscopic surgery or six weeks for open surgery.

Summary: During the events of Mann vs. Machine, Technician faces her greatest fear for the good of her friends - and the love of her life.

Warnings: General depictions of surgery (nothing too graphic, but there is a lot of talk about Tech’s heart in the second half)

A/N: Ok...I am very very nervous about posting this fic. I had to scramble to find a good reason for Tech to have this surgery done (i.e. if lives were on the line), and I’m just always nervous when presenting my writings with Medic. I have seen quite a few people be critical about his depictions, if he’s ‘in character’ enough, and I was afraid of being met with that kind of criticism. But writing is supposed to be for fun, and IF I’m a little ooc with him, so what? I put a whole lot into this fic, and you’re going to really see the extent of their feelings, so I’m proud of it. (Also, about the end, I am totally one to use wordplay even if I’m just coming out of anesthesia, so yeah Tech is like that too.)

     For as long as she could remember, Technician's greatest fear and weakness had been anything related to medical procedures. From the smell of a sterilized office to the mere sight of a needle, it all made her anxious at best and panic-stricken at worst. Everyone at the RED base knew this, since they heard how she ‘freaked out’ during her initial physical examination. Fortunately, although her phobias still remain, her reactions have started to become less severe over time, thanks in big part to her relationship with Medic. Forming a friendship, and later a romantic affair, with him helped her tolerance to her fear triggers greatly. Her desire to see him had her visiting the medbay often, where she soon became accustomed to many sights and smells of the lab. The doctor remained supportive of Technician working to overcome her fears, and he took an active role in the process. Still, Katie had a long way to go, and he knew that. He knew, by now, what kind of answer he would get to a proposed surgery, even though he only offered what was for her benefit. "It's very sweet that you care that much, but it's just not worth it to me." So, he would sigh in defeat and drop the subject, loving her too much to breach the boundaries she set.

     This pattern continued until 1971. Mann Co. was under siege by Grey Mann, effectively taking control from Saxton Hale with an army of robots. Both Red and Blu teams were hired to take back the company, so far with little avail. It all seemed pointless to Technician, at first, if not fortunate; this could be her ticket out of here, if she could convince Grey to fire her. Then the game changed. In an effort to drive the mercs away for good, Grey's forces managed to sabotage and shut down respawn - for good. Now, they could actually die. After so many years of being alone, Katie couldn't bear the thought of losing her friends. With Medic's new reviving invention still a work in progress, that thought could become a reality. She would do anything to keep them safe, even just to increase that chance by a fraction of a percentage. This was what she came to talk to Medic about, one quiet afternoon at the base.

     The two of them sat on the couch in his office. The programmer remained silent, a hesitant and apprehensive frown on her face. She had yet to reveal why she called Medic here, and the longer she waited, the more concerned he became. However, his patience was finite, and spending the whole day on this conversation could be time otherwise spent working on his invention. "Darling," he addressed her gently, but with seriousness, "Vhatever is troubling you, don't be afraid to tell me about it; I cannot help you if you don't tell me...nor do I have time to vait much longer."

     Technician's chest tightened, her eyes squeezing shut for a moment. She couldn't wait forever. Sighing nervously, she began, "...I need you to...do something for me."

     "Anything," he answered without question.

     Another short pause. "I'm scared. I really think we could die out there..." She held his hand for support. "I can't lose you, Ludwig. You're the most important person in my life...and you're all my friends... You're the closest thing I have to family. So, I want to do whatever I can to help protect you."

     "...Vhat are you saying?"

     "...I want you to put Über in me."

     Medic couldn't believe what he heard. Technician seemed to have a knack for surprising him, but, understandably, this was a big deal. Thus far, she had refused every surgery offer presented to her, and now she comes to him and requests one? The man was no reader of emotions, but judging from the tension on her face, and how she squeezed his hand, it didn't seem like she was completely positive of the decision. Excited as he felt, he had to make sure they were on the same page, or he could lose her trust in him forever. "You are...absolutely sure of zhis?"

       Technician went quiet again before answering. "I don't know. But...I want to be. I don't want to be afraid of this, especially if it could help you stay alive. With how often I've fallen onto front lines, it could even protect me, too. But..."

     "If it's pain you're concerned about, I promise zhe pain medications I use, in addition to zhe medigun, vill decrease anything you feel down to manageable levels." He couldn't help but try to convince her to go through with it. Despite her indecision, he agreed with her points that supported the procedure; this could protect her and her friends, should she fall into danger. "You won't even need stitches," he added with a small smile.

     He was getting excited, she could hear it in his voice. Technician expected as much, but she had to finish. "It's not just about the pain. I just...I don't like operations, I never did. You know that... And...I wanted to make sure I could...trust you with it. And I do, now. It's just...hard."

     Medic's smile grew when he heard that he finally earned Technician's trust. That alone made him feel so accomplished. "I promise you, I vill handle zhe procedure vis as much care as I handle our fledgling doves. You have my word as a doctor - license or no." He tilted his head down to further meet her gaze. "Does zhat ease any of your fear?"

     "...Yeah. It does."

     On the day of the operation, Technician's friends all came to give their support. She was facing a great challenge for the good of the team, and for her own safety, a decision that they all could commend. Soldier told her she was making her country proud by pushing through the fear; Scout brought her some comic books to read for when she's in recovery; Sniper and Engineer pledged to stay by her bedside when she goes under and when she wakes up; even Spy said he would anticipate hearing her wake from a successful operation. Their faith and encouragement helped Technician move forward with this, and she kept their words and gestures in mind when nervously changing into her special hospital gown. Above all, she remembered all Medic promised to do for her, to keep her as comfortable as possible.

       Placing her jewelry in a plastic bag, her thumb brushed over the heart-shaped pendant of her necklace. That was a prized possession now, a symbol of how much she was cherished. As she stared at it, her mind began retracing every instance of Ludwig prioritizing her happiness. This...this was a man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with. And why: because she knew she could entrust him with her very life, even on the operating table. She knew that if she asked him to do or not do something, he would take that request seriously. She's going to go into the operating room with full confidence that Medic will do nothing more than implant the Über device in a human heart. That was true love.

     Technician made her way to the hospital bed, and squeezed Dell's hand as the I.V. went in her wrist. As she settled down from that, Medic gleefully presented his patient with precautions he doesn't usually take during surgery, such as a clean pair of gloves and keeping Archimedes at a distance, so the dove doesn't get tempted to play assistant surgeon. In the time between now and the first Über implantation, Medic had even been experimenting with his invention to make it more efficient, i.e. less likely to overload the patient's heart and what not. There was a good chance that Technician could come out of this with her original heart in tact.

     At last, the time came for her to be put under anesthesia, per her request. Katie kept her eyes away from the sight, but listened to Medic's voice as she slipped into unconsciousness. "You'll be awake and feeling good as new in no time, my dear. Don't worry..." he told her calmly as he watched her drift off. Engineer and Sniper then left the room, and the procedure began.

     Everything was running well. Throughout the procedure, Medic talked to his patient as if she was awake, from making light (one-sided) conversation to commenting on each step he was taking. (He said she had very healthy ribs, for instance.) At last, Technician's heart was successfully removed and resting in the doctor's delicate hold. He was being timely about each step so far, never stalling or rushing; but here was when he began to pause, staring at his love's heart while the medigun kept her on life support. The power he felt was indescribable, surmounted only by the honor of being granted the chance to literally hold Katie's very life in his hands. He, too, understood the significance of being allowed to perform this surgery on her, the amount of trust it showed she had in him. There was excitement from finally getting to operate, yes, but...it had yet to truly sink in until this moment.

       As he cradled the tiny, life-giving muscle, a euphoria began to overtake him. This was more than just the thrill of practicing medicine; this was finally realizing the meaning of his beloved not only allowing, but asking without prompt, to partake in her greatest fear. The love she had for him was stronger than her fear and doubt, for she realized that he would never hurt her. And for all the love he felt for her, and how much closer he would feel to her if given the chance to do this, hearing her finally approve was his strongest wish. Ludwig was already sure he had found The One, but now - oh, now he was 100% positive and then some. His breathing cut short a couple times as his eyes began to well up. But, instead of crying, he began to laugh - slowly, quietly, then rising in strength with his elation. It was a laugh of pure joy, unlike anything else ever heard in the operating room.

     Awaking from the anesthesia was a slightly difficult task, only due to Technician's penchant for prolonging sleep. With the pain medication still in her system, she had almost forgotten for a moment that she had underwent surgery. But a growing echo of voices helped pull her out of her induced slumber.      

     "I think she's comin' to, doc. Hey, Tech, can ya hear us?"

     "Come on, mate..."

     "Vake up, meine geliebte~. Zhe surgery is all over now."

     The sing-song tones of Medic's call lured her out of her sleeping state, and cerulean eyes fluttered open to the sight of the doctor's beaming smile. To her left, Engineer and Sniper sat with their own happy expressions. Technician turned her gaze back to Medic, attempting to speak through her haze. "Did...everything..."

     "Everything vent perfectly, darling, visout a hitch." Medic answered her, "I hadn't completed a procedure zhat smoothly in years, heh." In truth, there had been one or two slight deviations in the plan - minor errors that he was able to work around, and certainly not worth mentioning to the tomophobic programmer. That being said, it was still one of Medic's more successful operations. "How do you feel?"

     She thought for a moment, hesitant to feel her heart in case she might feel the Über implant. "Strange...Tired... Chest feels tight. Is my heart okay?"

     Engineer spoke up with more words of reassurance, "Heart's a-OK, Techie. Doc said it survived the whole thing, no transplants 'r anything like that."

     "It vas remarkable to witness," Medic commented with glee, "For a heart of such small size, I vas expecting more resistance to zhe device. My upgrades must have made an even greater improvement zhan anticipated!"

     The corners of her lips began to curl as she heard the great news. Above all, she was worried about her heart needing to be replaced with something bizarre for the device to work. But, the doctor fulfilled his promises and kept her heart intact...as did another force unbeknownst to her. Should someone tell her of it, she would show no surprise at the fact.

     Facing Medic again, Technician inched her hand closer to him, a kind look in her sleepy eyes. "I knew you could do it... I was in good hands."

Good First Impressions

This next case was intriguing, frustrating, and far too personal for Malcolm to be working on. Another wanna-be serial killer was going around, having similar killing techniques to The Surgeon’s. In simple terms; The Surgeon’s Extension. The killer seemed to be having fun with it too. They only left evidence they wanted the team to find. They left cryptid messages. Clues. Things to throw them off.

There was one clue, though, that piqued Malcolm’s interest.

“His blood flows within me too. We are family.”

This was either a sign that the killer was deranged, or it actually meant something.

Gil was rather spooked. He knew something that he was keeping from everyone. Malcolm was surprised that Gil knew something about Martin Whitly’s family, when Malcolm himself was a part of that family. What would Gil know that Malcolm didn’t?

Malcolm entered Gil’s office quite suspiciously. He closed the door behind him, causing Gil to look up curiously.

“What’s up, kid?”

Gil set down what he was doing, now sitting straight up in his chair.

“What does the note mean?”

Malcolm asked bluntly.

Gil dropped his head and sighed. He brought his head back up, staring at Malcolm once again.

“Malcolm,”

Gil sighed.

“Just give it to me straight. You’re obviously withholding because you think it will upset me.”

Malcolm approached the desk more.

Gil sighed once more, rising from his seat. He raised his arms slightly, just to slap them back down onto his thighs.

“Fine,”

He relented.

“I’ll give it to you straight.”

Gil approached Malcolm, setting a hand on his shoulder.

“I can take it, whatever it-”

“Martin Whitly has a sister.”

Gil interrupted Malcolm.

“Your aunt’s name is [Y/N] Whitly. She changed her name to [Y/N] Ackers.”

Malcolm was shocked. He stayed silent, processing what Gil had just told him.

“What?”

Malcolm took a step back, causing Gil to remove his hand.

“That can’t be right. Why wouldn’t I remember her?”

“She never really visited you as kids. She isn’t a kid kind of person,”

Gil explained regrettably

“Doesn’t this mean she’s a suspect? Are you going to bring her in?”

Malcolm was very concerned now.

Gil shook his head.

“I don’t know. She- She wouldn’t do something like this.”

Gil turned his back, making his way to his chair.

“How do you know what she is like? I don’t even know what she is like.”

Malcolm inquired, suspicious of Gil.

Gil just glanced over at Malcolm, almost sadly. He once again shook his head as he returned to his sitting position and back to his work.

Malcolm took this as a sign to leave. And so he did. He left Gil’s office, and left the precinct, off to find this lady he’d never met. How would he find her though? She was obviously in New York if Gil was nervous. But New York is an entire state with millions of people. Perhaps, just maybe, there would be one person that knew. Dr. Martin Whitly. 

(I don’t wanna create an entire ass conversation between Malcolm and Martin. I might lose motivation afterwards, so let’s just--)

It was the next day. More like, night. Around 7 in the afternoon. Malcolm pulled into [Y/N]’s driveway. It was a dirt driveway with only one other car there. It must be hers. She has to be home.

Malcolm hesitantly exited his vehicle, and approached her front door. The house wasn’t large, but it most certainly wasn’t a home you’d get for just yourself. It was a dark wood, almost cabin-like, home. Two windows looked out into the front, but you couldn’t actually see through them. They were covered with thick blankets. Malcolm looked at the windows, slightly confused. He knocked on the door, and waited anxiously. A minute passed. No noise was heard. Maybe he was being impatient, but did she even hear the knock?

There wasn’t a doorbell. So Malcolm settled for pounding on the door again.

“[Y/N] Ackers!?”

He bellowed at the door.

Little did Malcolm know, he was causing a great amount of fear to the one inside the cabin home.[Y/N] was awake, reading in her small library. It was dead silent until she heard the familiar creeks of the front porch steps. She closed her book slowly, setting it on her seat as she rose, turning out the light and slowly and quietly exiting the room. She entered the area just outside where her front door was. Then again, pounding at the door, along with yelling. She jumped in place, frightened by the aggressive pounding, and by the yelling of her name. [Y/N] bolted into her bedroom. She was panicking already. After recent events, she’d been on edge. The paparazzi had definitely become a blazing flame. Crazy people had tried breaking into her home already. She couldn’t stand it anymore. In an act of irrational reasoning, she broke the glass of her cabinet containing old antique items. One of those items being a one sided battle axe. It wasn’t too large, but [Y/N] still weld it with both hands.

Malcolm heard the shattering of glass, and sounds of movement. He hadn’t a clue of what was going on, but it couldn’t be good. Now worried, Malcolm knocked rapidly. In a series of odd events, Malcolm believed [Y/N] to be in danger due to her ties to The Surgeon, and [Y/N] believed she was facing another crazy person ready to break into her home. As [Y/N] cautiously stepped around her dark home, Malcolm took it upon himself to break in to see what was happening. He managed to break through her front window, barely getting cut as the glass shattered. [Y/N] was terrified now. She didn't think someone would actually do it and break through her window.

Malcolm was worried and concerned about her deep inside. As Malcolm made his way inside the home, [Y/N] continued to tread cautiously as well. 

"[Y/N]?!"

Malcolm called out again.

Hearing her name being called out sent chills down her spine. She wanted to freak out. But panicking would kill her. She spotted the intruder's dark form wandering her living room. She hid in her hallway, terrified. Sweat dripped from her forehead.

"Ms. Ackers!?"

The man yelled again.

[Y/N] just needed a perfect moment to strike. And that moment came sooner than later. Malcolm turned his back to her. [Y/N] was behind him in seconds. She didn't know what came over her. Right now, she knew she was over him with a battle axe raised to take his head off. Right as she swung down, Malcolm dove to the right. The axe went into the ground, and so did Malcolm. He scrambled as [Y/N] was surprisingly quick to remove the axe from the floorboards. And once again, she was over Malcolm with her axe raised, about to swing down. Malcolm faced her from the ground, panic on his face as he looked into her burning (E/C) orbs.

"Whoa! Whoa! [Y/N]!"

Malcolm pleaded to her as he tried to crawl away.

"Who the hell do you-!?"

[Y/N] was about to yell at him when she realized who he was. She lowered the axe cautiously, a confused and concerned look on her face.

"M-Malcolm!?"

"[Y/N]. Uh…"

Malcolm didn't know what to say.

"...s-sorry..?"

And soon, the broken window revealed blue and red flashing lights and the sound of the sirens blaring.

And now, [Y/N] was at the precinct. She'd been questioned. Nothing came of it. She never left her house and barely had any friends. People only knew her because of what her brother did and the conspiracy about her involvement. Apparently, she used to be a criminal profiler for the NYPD. For the same precinct. She had to quit when Martin was arrested for the 23 murders.

She finally returned to the precinct. And now she was pacing in Gil's office, embarrassed about the event that had just occurred.

"[Y/N], you need to calm down."

Gil pressed his wrists into his desk, shaking his hands in a directing manner.

"Calm down? Gil,"

[Y/N] began frantically.

"I think Malcolm is scared of me."

She stopped pacing, and looked over at Gil, hand on her hip.

"That might be because you nearly took his head off with a battle axe,"

Gil pointed out

"The first time you met."

[Y/N] looked to the ground, tapping her other hand's fingers on her leg. She shook her head.

"... To be fair, it was dark, and he had just broken into my house."

She finally looked up at Gil again.

A small smile was on his face.

"You realize how ridiculous this sounds?"

He struggled from laughing.

"Yes! But what if the poor boy's traumatized..?"

[Y/N] was obviously not clear on what happened to Malcolm in his younger years.

"[Y/N], he's going to be fine. Besides, whatever happened is his fault."

Gil stood up, trying to relieve [Y/N] of her guilt.

"Now, come on. I'll get you home."

Gil walked to his office door, opening it and motioning for [Y/N] to leave first.

She followed, swinging her arms to her side frustratingly. As she continued to make her way out, she combed her fingers through her hair. She felt the eyes on her from everyone in the precinct. The seniors she knew from 20 years ago, the newbies who had started maybe a week ago.

There was something about the way she looked, too. She looked just like her older brother. The only difference was that she was female and Martin was male. Even her hair grayed the same way his had. There was something in her eyes that people saw in Martin in the newspapers. Something that spooked Malcolm. He was scared of her, not because she nearly killed him, but because she was like his father. He stared at her like everyone else did. Except he had the look of knowledge.

7 Power Laws of the Technological Singularity

When people talk about the technological singularity they usually do so exclusively in the context of Moore’s Law. But there are several Moore’s Law-like laws at work in the world and each of them is equally baffling. I’m referring to this list of trends as “power laws” because of the nature of their incredible rate of growth and because they independently work as pistons driving the engine of the singularity. A few things to note about these power laws. Firstly they are just observations. There are no, known, deeper physical principles in the universe that would lead us to believe that they must hold true. Secondly, we’ve observed these trends long enough to warren their recognition as power laws and there is no evidence or signs of their stagnating. We’ll start with the most famous and well-known power law and work our way through the others.

1. Moore’s Law

Moore’s Law states that transistors on a chip double about every two years and that the cost of that doubling halves. This is a double-edged sword. It means that the next model computer will be way faster than the previous but it also means that the value of your existing computer is dropping rapidly. The end of Moore’s Law has been proclaimed for a long time but there seems to be no end to its progression.

As we reach the physical limits of transistor sizes, entirely new hardware architectures are developed that sustain the progression. Things like 3D chips, specialized chips, and non-silicon based chips like photonics, spintronics, and neuromorphic chips are being developed and will ensure that this law continues.

“Regular boosts to computing performance that used to come from Moore’s Law will continue, and will instead stem from changes to how chips are designed.” — Mike Muller, CTO at ARM

What this does not mean is that a user’s experience of computer speed will increase. We tend to be more sloppy with application development when it’s cheap to make up for it with hardware horsepower. There is a standing joke that the same amount of computing resources that were used to send astronauts to the moon in the ’60s is now accidentally used by a sluggish browser tab.

2. Kryder’s Law

The second law driving our propulsion into the technological singularity is Kryder’s Law. It states, loosely, that digital storage doubles every year. It specifically has to do with magnetic storage but the principle is applicable to all digital storage as you will see. While you may not see this law exactly played out in the price of external drives in your local Best Buy, you can see it if you consider the price of cloud storage services.

Let’s look at the current top cloud storage providers. Apple offers two terabytes of cloud storage for about $10 a month. Google offers the same space for the same price as well as 10 terabytes for about $100 a month. After that, users can get 20 terabytes for $200 a month, 30 terabytes for $300 a month, and so on. Dropbox offers yet a similar package but with extras like full-text search for $20 a month. Lastly and most competitive is Amazon offering an incredible $0.004 per gigabyte per month through its Glacier storage service. When you take these cloud providers into account and consider that they will only grow via economies of scale, you see that Kryder’s law is in full effect.

Note that this also doesn’t even take into consideration innovations like Filecoin that actually distribute Kryder’s Law by allowing anyone with storage capacity to rent that space out. You could look at it like Uber or Airbnb for digital storage. This highlights the idea that this digital power law, like the others, should not be strictly tied to a hardware implementation. Similar to how Moore’s Law continues but not strictly through cramming more transistors on a chip but through new engineering architectures. The same principle applies.

3. Nielsen’s Law

Thirdly, we have Nielsen’s Law. If the previous laws could be summarized as computation and storage, this one is summarized as throughput. It states that bandwidth grows by 50% a year. More precisely, it states that the bandwidth of high-end users grows by 50% a year. That’s just 10% less annual growth than Moore’s Law.

In practice, we don’t see this linear growth and there are three reasons for it. One, Telecom companies are conservative. It cost billions of dollars to update their sprawling hardware. Two. The immediate impact of the end-user is not a guaranteed faster experience if they do upgrade their infrastructure. You can have the fastest hardware in the world on your street but that doesn’t automatically make the rest of the countries hardware faster. That slow loading web page may only be imperceptible faster after your area’s hardware is upgraded. Lastly, as new people get online, it’s more likely they are using older slower devices so the average expected speed is kept pressed down by these newcomers.

Since 1G was introduced in the 1980s, new wireless technology has been released every ten years. The advent of 1G introduced mobile telephony. Than 2G in the ’90s brought about global roaming and SMS. The 200’s saw 3G and smartphones with data. 2010 introduced 4G and mobile broadband. The year 2020 will be the year of 5G and the realization of the fully ubiquitous cloud. To put this in perspective, let’s say you wanted to download the newest episode of your favorite television show. At 800MB it would have taken 8 hours hrs to download in 1998, 5 hrs in 2001, 45 minutes in 2009, and 1 second with the new wireless protocol.

The impact and roll out of 5G will be enormous. With current networks, it takes about 100 milliseconds for information to travel across a network. With 5G, that latency will be reduced to 1 millisecond. We are talking about downloading full-length 5k movies in less than a second, surgeons controlling surgical robots in real-time from across the country, smart cities, and smart car-to-car communications.

4. Koomey’s Law

Koomey’s law has to do with the efficient use of energy and states that the number of computations per joule of energy dissipated has been doubling approximately every 1.57 years. This trend has been stable since the 1950s and has been faster than Moore’s law. Jonathan Koomey reframed the trend as follows: “at a fixed computing load, the amount of battery you need will fall by a factor of two every year and a half”. You can see the effect of this law in today’s newest generation CPU’s (Apple’s M1 chip) that are pumping out incredible amounts of processing power at significantly reduced levels of energy consumption.

5. Metcalfe’s Law

This power law with its closely associated cousin, the network effect, asserts that the value of a network is proportional to how many users are a part of it and that the addition of a new member adds value to all the existing members.
