What a weird day. I got woken up really early, like 5 hours of sleep, by a super loud bang from the floor above me. I got up and Max was insisting on getting her food early, so I got her fed and went to refill my water bottle and it smelled like mildew. -_- I hate that, I guess I don't wash it often enough. It's a solid metal water bottle and my genius-ass decided my best course of action - because I couldn't really foresee getting a sponge in there - was to fill it halfway with boiling water. Got a nice burn on my hand from that.

I got a little nap after that, so it wasn't so bad. But I've just been spacey as fuck all day. I think the temp change might be part of it, it was like 50F today. It was 11 last week. Guess this is the "new normal" everyone's talkin about.

I played a bunch of Session today, which was fun. It's been a while, and I noticed I've gotten much better at it, especially compared to my clips from October that I edited earlier this week.

I cleaned up a piece of quartz that I found in a roadcut by my old house. It was one of the more impressive natural points that I've found in the wild. I ended up putting it in my display case coffee table thing I have. Welcome to my life, I have a glass-top coffee table with a sick mineral collection in it, but no seating, no TV, nothing but unpacked boxes on that side of the room. And I've been here for like... well over 2 weeks, I don't even know anymore, time is so fucked for me. Like a month now? I legit can't even estimate.

So, since I'm on that... the big thing from today - besides a bunch of scattered work on stone and jewelry pieces that may never actually be made... - the big thing was that I was super goddamn scattered today. Like... I was all over the place. Like... this is a snapshot of my day. When I got my cat dinner, I noticed that the compost was getting moldy and I really should bring it out. The compost bins are probably... 50 yards out the side door, the side door is like... 30 yards from my apartment. So it's a super quick run out behind the maintenance shed to get it done. And I go... "oh, I can do the trash too, and the cat litter, because that's overdue, it's on the way." And this is as I was making my cat dinner. It took me like... 3 hours to take that compost out. I legit do not have any aversion to the act of taking it out, I just kept getting distracted and sucked into things. "I need to figure out dinner for me", "oh, I need to figure out groceries", "I should work on this art project over here", "I need a shower", "I should probably shower first", "should I cook or get delivery for the 4th night in a row?", "should I order groceries to be delivered?", "I need to do the cat litter first". It was just absolute chaos, one thing after the other. And then I'd just find myself in my computer chair polishing a rock and go "nope, come on, how did you even get here?! You need to go take the compost out, it just takes a minute." And any time I'd go do an intermediate task like cleaning the litterbox, it would like... reset my attention or something. I don't know. It's just been really, really difficult all day.

So, I didn't eat dinner until like 9:30, I just said fuck it and made ramen, which was my backup to my backup for dinner. I originally settled for a quesadilla but my cheese was moldy, a bit more than I was comfortable with. And I tried to get a grocery order in, but like... that was fucking tough. I just can't think straight and I don't have anything planned out at all, my whole list is like a chain of impulse buys. I feel like no matter how hard I try to focus, I just draw a blank when it comes to "what do I want to eat, what do I want to cook, what meals do I want." I think I'm just overloaded, overwhelmed. Or exhausted. Or both. Probably both. It just hasn't been this bad in a long ass time. I shit you not, I was standing in the kitchen doing an Instacart grocery order on my phone with my cat talking to me for at least an hour. And then I got to erase things off my whiteboard list on the fridge, which is a cool feeling. Then I started doodling on the whiteboard for like 20 minutes with my phone in my left hand the whole time. And I was like "dude, okay, you were doing groceries, remember?"

And this is fucking every day. And on tough days like today, I can get so overwhelmed or just... mentally-blocked from everyday tasks that I end up barely even eating, or going a whole day without drinking water. I'll forget that I have to go to the bathroom for like 2 hours and be squirming in my seat without even noticing it. It's a problem. And, to be honest, it makes me feel like a shitty adult. I'm 36. And a lot of these problems feel like problems people have with children or something. I don't know, I'm stopping myself right now because this is not fair to me, I was just super judgmental of myself right there. I'm not doing this shit intentionally, I didn't make this shit this hard for myself. I'm not choosing this path, and the only one who suffers from it is me. So beating myself up over something that's happening to me is a dumb idea, just gonna be blunt on that.

I've been giving people on r/ptsd this advice, it's about time I give it to myself. "Try to be a bit more gentle with yourself."

I know it's the voices of other people in my past just echoing through my head. And I know their voice is probably just an echo of shitty people in their lives, too. It just sucks.

I'm just really hoping this apartment doesn't turn into my last house. Like... ultra-super messy. I haven't vacuumed yet. I put a Swiffer wetmop thing on my grocery order, so I'm setting the stage for it, but like... okay, here's the deal. My shit is still in boxes, man. I don't have furniture. So... I really just need to take a trip to Goodwill or a second-hand furniture store and get whatever I can fit in my rental car. A bookcase, a sturdy work table, a futon, a TV table... a TV... I have a big comfy beanbag chair coming in the mail and I'm insanely stoked about that. I just need to get my shit out of boxes, off the floor and into some form of home... then I can vacuum without running a goddamn obstacle course, and it will feel more natural.

And it would help a lot if I had some kind of perception of time, at least day of the week, so I can have some kind of rhythm around cleaning - rather than noticing shit on the carpet and going "oh fuck, this got bad." I just really need to find a system that works. Because my whole "schedule my day" app thing I was using, that disappeared real quick. And my yoga... that one makes me sad, I loved my yoga time at sunset. I haven't done yoga in like 3 days. All because my former "best friend" who is now a homeless fentanyl trafficker and mother of 5 decided to call me looking for a ride one night, when I thought she was in jail. Now my life is just... kinda starting to stabilize a bit? Little by little?

So yeah, I dunno, I just wanted to get that out of my system and kinda describe what my day-to-day is like, because I kept that shit secret out of shame and guilt for a long ass time. How flighty and messy and disorganized I am, how chaotic my life is. Seriously, it's just absolute chaos most of the time, just like cat food twice a day, caffeine in the morning, sleep ritual of some kind at night, the rest is just... like I'm a leaf riding down whitewater rapids of my thoughts and attention.

My right forearm is hurting, it's because I type wrong, and I type all this every night. It's taking its toll on my arm, especially when I use my mouse a lot during the day too, and/or when I sand stones. The combination is rough. Like the inside half of my pointer finger is numb. I need to do some typing exercises and re-learn how to type properly. But for right now, I'm gonna tap out and go take a bath or something, try to chill before bed.

Oh, the 30 day yoga thing I was gonna do starts on January 1st, so that's a thing. Maybe that will help me find structure. I'll pull that up and try to keep track of it. Glad I remembered that. On that note, happy New Year and all that, if you're celebrating please be safe and don't be stupid like a lot of people I've known throughout my life. I hope we all find a bit more peace, love and compassion this coming year, the world could always use more of that.

After a couple rounds of drinks everyone agreed it was time to go home and rest. They said their goodbyes and headed out. As the group split and went their separate ways, Spencer followed Ava. “Ava, let me walk you home.”

She fixed her coat and pulled it closer to her chest, thankful for the company. She wasn’t a fan of walking home alone, especially in this part of town. She usually would grab a cab home, but she was tight with money this week after paying bills.

As the two rounded the corner and the coast was clear, Spencer gently touched Ava’s arm, “Hey… You okay?” Ava stopped and turned to face Spencer. Seeing her eyes start to swell with tears he engulfed her in a hug, “come here.” She couldn’t help herself, as soon as she felt his arms wrap around her the flood gates opened.

“Shhh… baby it’s okay.” Spencer cooed, rubbing circles on her back.

“I-I thought you were h-hurt.” She cried, “I was there on the phone with Penelope when it happened. I heard it all… the shots. Morgan calling your name, t-that you needed a medic.” He only tightened his arms around her. His theory was right. She had been crying today and heard what happened.

“Hey, I’m okay. I’m right here.” He pulled away and cupped her face with his hands, wiping the tears from her cheek. “Not a scratch on me.”

She sniffled, “I was so scared Spencer.”

“I’m sorry I scared you. I wish you hadn’t been in there when it all went down.” He wiped another tear that had rolled down her cheek. “But hey, I’m okay. It’s okay, we’re okay.” He gently kissed her forehead, “I missed you.”

He wrapped her in another hug.

“I missed you too.” She whispered into his chest, tightening her grip in the hug.

He walked her home and stayed until she got dressed for bed. She climbed into her bed and pulled the covers over her, then he slipped in next to her. He rubbed her back until she fell asleep before slipping out the door and heading back to his house.

A few days later, Ava had walked into work to a bouquet of flowers sitting on her desk. Daisies. Her favorite. She smiled and read the card attached, Good morning, beautiful. I thought you could use a little pick me up after the last few days. Dinner at my place tonight? Xx

He made sure to not say anything on the card that would give him away incase his co-workers asked. He had come in a little earlier, wanting to get the flowers on her desk before she arrived into work. Spencer sat at his desk and watched her face light up when she saw them. Just what he wanted. She had been struggling the last few days. Money was tight, them having to sneak around and with what happened in Dallas still haunting her. She hadn’t been sleeping well due to nightmares and was overall not having a great week.

She was grateful for his thoughtfulness. The few days had been hell. She took a quick glance at Spencer who was already looking at her and mouthed a thank you. He nodded in response. “Oh, Ava those flowers are beautiful!” JJ exclaimed as she walked through the doors, Emily following and commenting as well. “Who sent you those? Do you have a secret admirer?” She teased.

Ava laughed and shook her head. “They’re from this guy I’ve been seeing.”

“Oh, a guy you’ve been seeing? What’s he like?” Penelope piped, glancing at Reid and giving a quick wink.

“He’s pretty amazing. Super handsome and intelligent.” She moved the flowers to the side of her desk and out of her way. “Oh! And he’s a really really good kisser.” She gushed causing the girls to go “Ooooo.”

Spencer could hear their conversation and could not help but blush. He liked hearing her gush to the girls about him. Even if they had no idea who it was about.

“So, what’s his name then?” Emily asked, sitting down at her desk.

“What so you can get Penelope to look him up? Heck no. He will continue to be my little secret,” Ava did the motion of zipping her lips shut.

“Nice touch on the flowers.” Morgan whispered to Reid as he sat down.

“She’s had a rough few days. Only wanted to make her feel better.” Spencer leaned back in his chair. “She was there on the phone with Penelope when that shoot out had occurred. It’s really messed her up.”

“Can you blame her? She’s never been around this kind of stuff.” Morgan replied.

A couple weeks later Hotch received a call from the Atlanta Police Department. There had been a string of arson fires in the last few days, all with victims. Hotch called his team into the briefing room. A few moments later she heard her name being called. “Ava, I’d like your help on this case.” Hotch motioned her into the room.

Why would they need her help? She wondered as she grabbed her notebook and pen and headed for the room. The group was situated around the round table. The bulletin boards were filled with crime scene photos. Homes were burnt, bodies burnt to a crisp. She shuddered as the saw the photos. How could someone do this to another human being?

She went to take a seat on the couch not wanting to intrude at the table, but was stopped by Hotch, “Ava, come sit. I’d like your help with this case. It is happening in your hometown and you know it better than anyone. Also, it involves your father’s law firm.” Hotch motioned to the table.

Her father’s firm? Why? She took a seat between Spencer and Morgan. “What does my father’s firm have to do with this case?”

“We think his firm may have gained a few enemies.” He walked to the board and pointed to the crime scene photos of the burned down homes. “We seem to believe the un-sub is targeting the workers of his firm. All three fires have been set to the homes of lawyers who worked or have worked there.” Hotch handed folders out to the group.

Ava shook her head in disbelief, “But he doesn’t have enemies. The people of the firm are close. It’s a smaller firm. Family like environment.”

“Well someone is upset.” Morgan states, flipping through his folder and glancing over the pages.

“We’ve been asked to work the case and are heading to Atlanta today and I would like for you to come with. Are you up for that?” Gideon sets his folder down and looks at Ava from across the table through the rim of his glasses.

“I-I guess.” She was so surprised she didn’t know what to say.

“Ok great. Wheels up in 30.”

“Wait but I don’t have a bag. And I have a cat who needs to be fed.” Ava stands as everyone else does. She doesn’t have anything with her. And smokie must be fed and taken care of. She has work here to do too. She can’t just up and leave. “and I have work here to finish.”

“Penelope will look after your cat. Head home grab your things and meet us back here as soon as you can. Don’t worry about your work here. It can wait.” Hotch replies before heading to his office, everyone else heading to their desk. Spencer stayed behind, gathering everyone’s files, along with the things clipped to the board.

“Looks like you and I get to work a case together.” Spencer speaks up.

“Yeah I guess we do.” She helps him gather the evidence, still shocked she was asked about working the case and that her father’s law firm could have a potential enemy.

“And I get to meet your family? However, I hate it’s under this circumstance.” He slips the folders in his bag. “I know. It’s not like they don’t know about you though. I talk about you all the time,” she mumbles.

He smirks at her, “Oh? You talk about me all the time huh?”

She blushed, “Yes you idiot. Of course, I do.” She gently slapped his arm with the back of her hand.

“All good things I hope?” He raises an eyebrow at her.

She smirked, “Well yeah but some naughty things too. I did tell my mom about that thing you can do in bed… you know where you-”

His eyes went wide, “You did not!”

She laughed and shook her head, “No I didn’t. I’m kidding. Why would I want someone to know about that? I want to keep you all for myself.” She quickly squeezed his butt before walking out, laughing, he laughed in response and shook his head. She is something else.

Before she headed home, she gave Penelope the instructions for taking care of smokie if they were gone longer than a couple days. When she arrived home, she made sure Smokie had enough food and water and her litterbox was clean. Smokie would be fine for a couple days before needing to be checked on. Perks of having a cat instead of a dog. She gathered her things to take with her and headed back to the office, making sure the house was locked up.

When she arrived at the office the group rushed to the jet. As they were waiting to board the jet, Spencer walked up behind her, “This is for earlier,” he whispered before grabbing her butt. She jumped a little in response and blushed when Morgan turned around to look at them, “you guys okay?”

“Oh yeah we’re fine.” Spencer answered, “she just had something on her shoulder.” He gave a quick blow to her shoulder. “There. All gone.”

Morgan nodded, not believing them, “sure she did.”

The group boarded the jet and settled in. Gideon and Hotch took a seat in the back. Emily and JJ sitting at the table. Morgan sat in one of the open chairs next to the couch. Spencer sat on the couch and Ava followed sitting on the other end and putting her purse in between them.

She took a deep breath and took the chance to look around the jet. It was fancy. Fancier than any other plane she’d been on.

“I brought that book I was telling you about.” Spencer reaches into his messenger bag and pulls it out, “I figured you might want to read it.” He holds it out to her, but she’s reaching in her purse, pulling out a book a book as well.

“I brought the one I told you about in case you wanted to read it on the plane.” She laughed. He chuckled, “great minds think alike I guess?” They switched books and relaxed into the couch when Gideon spoke up.

“Ava when we land, we’re going to stop by your dad’s firm first. I’d like for you, Spencer, Emily and Morgan to go. Hotch, JJ and I will head to the Atlanta Police apartment.” Gideon stands, “We want to know if he’s made any enemies recently or if he knows why someone would be killing his employees.”

Spencer hands around the copies of case files and then opens his, reading over it, “Is it possible the unsub could have worked at the firm?”

Emily nodded, agreeing, “That could be the reason he’s picking off employees. Maybe one pissed him off and sent him into a revenge rage?”

“The unsub could have been fired and wanted revenge. Check with Mr. Camp and find out if he’s fired anyone recently.” Gideon looks between Emily and Spencer, then at Morgan. “Speak around with employees. See what their relationship is with each other, if there had been any previous altercations.”

It wasn’t soon after, the jet touched down in Atlanta and the team went their separate ways.

“Ava! Baby girl, how are you?” Mr. Camp exclaimed as his daughter walked in. Ava blushed in embarrassment and hugged her father.

“hey dad… These are my co-workers Spencer, Emily and Derek. Agents of the BAU.” She pointed at each of them as she said their names. Spencer was first to speak up and hold out his hand, “Dr. Spencer Reid, sir.” Mr. Camp shook his hand, giving him a look over. So. This was the man his daughter was dating. “Please call me James.”

Please don’t say anything, Ava thought. She had told her parents about Spencer but made sure they knew it was a secret. This wasn’t the way she wanted them to meet but oh well. Ava was close with her family and told her mother everything. She was happy her daughter finally met someone. A nice man for that matter. She hadn’t had the best luck with men in the past.

“Mr. Camp, we’d like to speak with you about the recent deaths of your employees.” Emily motioned to his desk.

Ava had left shortly after to speak with a few people in the firm that she hadn’t seen in a while. Morgan conducted interviews with the employees and found out a few things, but nothing stuck out. Spencer and Emily spoke with Mr. Camp about any employees that may have it out for him and the firm, but he couldn’t think of anyone.

“The people of this firm are very close. We’re all like family. I don’t know of anyone who would want to hurt anyone.”

“has there been any employees recently fired that could be angry?” Spencer asked.

“No, I haven’t fired anyone in a long time.”

“What about someone you interviewed but never gave the job to?” Emily glanced through the files of employees.

Mr. Camp thought for a moment, “Actually yes. There was a man who I interviewed a few weeks ago. He had a great resume, but something didn’t sit well with me. He didn’t seem like the family man this firm was looking for.”

“Sir, we’re going to need his name.” Spencer pulled out a piece of paper and a pen.

Mr. Camp slipped his glasses on and ran his finger down a list of names, “Ah yes here he is.” He looked up at Spencer and Emily, “His name was Rodger Jenkins.”

I have no free time today in front of a keyboard so I should be writing. Or working. Or listing all the things I forgot as I was half-heartedly packing. Or listing all the things I need to do before I leave so Mom isn’t disgusted when she comes to take care of the cats (Clean The Toilet). I managed to overpack without buying anything new but predictably, am not happy with any of it. This is one of my least favorite qualities about myself. Mom always hated shopping for jeans with me but I find my resistance to packing is incredibly annoying. I’m good at making sure the laundry is done so all of my options are open, but terrible at knowing what I will want to wear once I’m wherever.

I also managed to completely overlook shampoo and body wash on my first round of packing, which doesn’t bode well.

Is there some kind of rule against contractions I don’t know about? Word keeps putting blue squiggly lines under my contractions as if I don’t know what they are. I understand that writing all the words out will boost my count, but it’s not how people tend to talk.

Among the amenities at the retreat center where I’ll be this weekend is a working farm with baby animals. Yes, please, I would like to play with all of the baby animals. When life is complicated and ugly, baby animals are easy and adorable. My sister will be jealous when she sees the pictures with which I intend to spam her.

My sister is one of my best friends and I’m grateful for her every day. I’m not sure she would have chosen the way our lives have played out this far, but she is also unmarried and child-free (that part I’m pretty sure she’s okay with). If she dates, she doesn’t talk about it much with me, but I haven’t seen her in a relationship in over ten years. It was a brutal one. First love, first boyfriend, first break-up all in her mid-20s. Although my romantical adventures have been largely, um, unsuccessful, I am glad I got used to the idea of heartbreak young. (Even the song that turned me from a pop princess to a rock goddess was “Bringin’ On The Heartbreak” [MTV was born when I was in eighth grade and was my obsession for the next five years.])

Def Leppard is how I met my first boyfriend! We were in ninth grade, he was in my homeroom (both of our last names start with “H”), and he was wearing a tour shirt promoting the band’s second album. I was entranced. “You’ve seen them?” (Wanders off down a Randy Rhoads rabbit-hole.) I remember the conversation included something about Ozzy Osbourne and Randy Rhoads; either he’d seen them or was supposed to right after Randy died. Wikipedia tells me that Def Leppard opened for Ozzy at Merriweather, which is probably where A saw them; Randy Rhoads and all. (Now I am irrationally jealous at missing a show 38 years ago.) That’s probably where he got the shirt that made me talk to him; the shirt I made him leave with me when he moved away.

I should probably blame all my romantic misadventures on Def Leppard. They were a “heavy metal” (The lead singer joked “light alloy”) band that appealed to a slightly rougher crowd than I hand previously hung with. A introduced me to drinking beer in the woods by the elementary school (I was all of 13 or 14). The cops came and we ran to his apartment – his bedroom was on the ground floor and we climbed in through the window. We made out for a while to the Scorpions’ “Lovedrive”. A was a bad boy, and it took me a long time to get the taste for them out of my mouth.

A called every few months and my stomach would do flips at the sound of his voice. Did he ever actually say he was coming back for me or did I just make that part up?

My next boyfriend showed up when I was a senior and wreaked havoc on and off for the next seven years. He was a serial cheater and a pathological liar against which I had absolutely no defenses. I was a goody-goody. Teacher’s pet type. There was a pivotal moment one adolescent summer when the decision I made set the course for the rest of my life. I was hanging out in town with one of the tougher girls and her friends, trying to figure out how to smoke, and noticed it was 9:15. Curfew was 9:30, and I was easily a mile from home. I knew that showing up late would mean trouble. Was I going to say “fuck it” and keep hanging out?

I ran my ass off to make it home on time. Goody-goody. This probably kept me out of a lot of future trouble.

I fell hard for S – he was charming and charismatic and sang “Dixie Chicken” and made me laugh. He went to the Catholic boys’ school and was friends with my friend MB’s older brother. By that time I was solidly British pop new wave with some hard rock on the side (much like MTV itself). For the next absurd amount of years either he cheated on me or with me – he knew I would always be there. Until the night when he told me that he knew I was never going to find anyone who loved him like I did and he was ready to commit, but he had to tell me something first. His ex was pregnant and it was his. That was it for me. Finally. “Dixie Chicken” still gets me, as does the taste of Marlboro Reds and Bazooka bubble gum. (I started smoking when he broke up with me the first time.)

After my first college boyfriend (a good guy who is still married to the woman he dated after we broke up), I decided I wasn’t going to let anyone get close anymore. I was done with love; I was going to be one of those distant women who could never be possessed and never get hurt. I imagined veils and fog. If it was good enough for Stevie, it was good enough for me. At that time the idea of “if you want what someone has, do what they do” didn’t include the caveat of perhaps “asking if it was what they wanted and would they make the same choices again.” (I’m not saying Stevie’s not happy with her life, but 30 years ago she may have gently steered me another way.)

My old team leader just came by to chat and now my roll is slowed. She and I have worked together since I started here 17 years ago. My mind is starting to wander since I’m out of here soon.

I do want a partner – for practical reasons as well as romantic ones. I hate thinking that all the good sex is behind me, for one thing. It would be awesome to have help around the house – to have someone motivated to get something done when I just can’t get it in gear. (Much like this writing day. It was so easy yesterday!) (Five hundred more! Push through!)

I’m already annoyed because I’m not going to get my active minutes in today. It’s hard to be compulsive and unmotivated at the same time. I hate the feeling of being rushed – of not having enough time to get everything done. I want to get on the road before 4:30 because it’s Friday rush hour and I’m going around the beltway but I also want to clean the bathroom, scoop the litterboxes, and collect all of the paraphernalia I’ve forgotten to pack. It will be ridiculous if I have to level up a suitcase to go to a yoga retreat. Which is going to be interrupted by my service commitment, which is my decision, but ugh. I would prefer not to.

I’ve had an absurd amount of coffee today! The ideas should be flying out of me!

But where does a forty-ten-year-old meet people if not at work? There are people in all the meetings I go to but hardly any I’m interested in dating. My current working theory of relationships is that you should to the things that interest you. Whomever you meet along the way will have at least one interest in common. The problem with this theory is that carried to its logical conclusion, I’ve been in the wrong place for the past blah blah years. I must not be doing what I should be doing if I’m not meeting people I’m attracted to.

I mean, I know it’s all a crapshoot and our lives are run just as much by chance as by anything else. I can’t even complain about the cards I’ve been giving because I am way privileged. That’s something it took me way too long to figure out. I am a white woman who has always been housed and clothed and fed. I’m cis, I’m mostly heterosexual, and my body still does almost everything I ask of it. I have very little room to complain. I know that complaining about mental illness is something of a luxury – look at all the things going right that would otherwise take priority.

I have to thank the Internet for introducing me to people I would have never met otherwise. Yes, there are many cons to this big-data-driven lifestyle and I panic when my smart phone stops working. Social media absolutely has its negatives, but the people that I’ve met there are none of them. I met my first collection of Webpeeps thanks to FARK.com, but it was LiveJournal and Tumblr that expanded my world view.

(Does one last sentence complaining about being short on word count count as more words? I feel like it’s been all stops and starts today after the Randy Rhoads rabbit hole.)

PERSEVERANCE

Sans mulls it over for a long, long……long time.

It’s not the kind of thing you rush into, lots of factors to be considered, and honestly, he’s…a little nervous about what you’ll say.

But eventually, he builds up the courage to ask.

One night while you’re cuddled up beside him in bed, he gently nudges you and just blurts it out.

“i want a cat.”

Sans isn’t quite sure what he expects you to say, but you manage to surprise him anyway.

“Yeah? Okay, a cat sounds nice.”

“……really?”

It feels like it shouldn’t be so easy.

He feels like you should be…rolling your eyes at him, pointing out that you already have a pet, he doesn’t need another one.

(Sans never thinks that he had a bad dad, but it’s moments like these, when he’s surprised to be so quickly, unquestioningly supported that he realizes he probably didn’t… have a very good one, either.)

You make half a shrugging gesture and wriggle a little closer beneath his arm.

“Sure,” you say. “I mean, we probably want to be careful about personality, don’t want Buddy getting bullied too bad, but… yeah, we should be able to handle a cat.”

“……”

Sans elects not to answer with words. He figures his silent gratitude is understood in the way you snicker at his affectionate nuzzling.

“Got your eye on anybody in particular, or…?”

At that, it’s Sans’ turn to shrug.

“i’ll let ya’ know,” he says, and that’s the end of that discussion.

Sans is excited already.

You actually have no part in picking out the cat.

You’re out walking a new dog and Sans is in the cat room, cleaning out litterboxes and it just sort of happens.

Just like in the movies, practically in slow motion, he looks up and meets eyes with…her.

‘She’s a fine specimen of feline’…is something that would probably not be said about her very often.

She’s a little weird-looking, with a thin, sparse coat instead of a fluffy one and gigantic ears that don’t really fit her head and when she sees Sans looking at her, she screams at the top of her lungs—which is pretty damn loud, because those big bat-ears of hers don’t work and she has no concept of volume control.

Her loudness is actually what got her the affectionate name of…

………

Well, Sans can’t remember it now, but he thinks it was probably appropriate, whatever it was.

He also thinks that this cat has been here a pretty long time already, with no one willing to give her a chance.

And he knows instantly that she’s The One.

He feels it urgently enough that he finishes his task and then goes straight to her, scooping her up and carrying her into the lobby.

She sniffs and tries to bite the pen he uses to hastily scrawl his name on the adoption form, but then is perfectly mild-mannered as he pays the fee and probably spooks the receptionist by shortcutting home with his new cat.

Sans sets her down in the middle of the living room. Even knowing she can’t hear it, he still says, “go on, check out your new digs,” and slowly, cautiously, she does.

She looks around, taking a sniff of the carpet, the coffee table, the leg of the couch, and it seems to pass muster.

The real challenge is when Buddy’s head pokes out of the kitchen door, investigating the noise of somebody home so early in the day.

Sans watches them carefully as the two catch sight of each other for the first time.

He surprises himself with how much animal body language he’s picked up over the years and how well he understands what’s happening now.

Buddy’s ears are back, but his tail is slowly wagging as he comes on in—a little wary, but mostly curious.

The cat’s tail is straight out behind her, a little low, but not fluffed—not quite sure of what’s happening, but not scared, either.

Buddy approaches and when he’s finally close enough, he…sniffs her.

She sniffs him back and summarily decides he is a boring dog, like all the other ones she’s seen at the shelter, and ambles away to explore much more interesting things.

She’s not followed because Buddy goes straight to Sans instead, snuffling at his slippers in greeting of his skeleton-dad.

Sans grins so wide it makes his skull ache.

“good boy, buddy,” he assures him, giving him a real good scritch behind the ear.

No instantly flying fur and claws was a fantastic sign and he makes sure to give his little pal a cookie for being cool before tracking down his littler pal on her tour around her new home-to-be.

Sans can’t quite say it’s all smooth sailing.

Actually, aside from the meeting with Buddy, there’s not much smooth about her introduction into the house at all.

She knocks over three cereal boxes and a half-empty bag of coffee trying to jump on top of the fridge. She finds the laundry room and spends a good few minutes yelling at the washer and looking between it and Sans as if expecting him to explain himself for it. He picks her up and shows her the upstairs instead and she gets so excited about the new territory that she starts to rocket back and forth with the kind of Unique Cat Energy that usually only comes out at three in the morning, and…

Well, by the end of that, at least Sans has a pretty good name for her.

He asks if she likes it, but she just hops up onto his lap and starts kneading little cat-claw-sized holes in his already hole-ridden hoodie.

“you’re such a weird goof,” he mutters down at her. “you’re gonna do great here.”

She keeps on kneading and squints at him, the way you always say he does when he’s happy.

Sans doesn’t think he’s capable of making a face as cute as hers, but he guesses love can make even the ugliest of monsters seem cute.

And speaking of love, you’re walking in through the front door, smiling brightly at the sight that greets your eyes.

“Here you are,” you say, with a cute little smirk, and…

Oh.

Did Sans text you he was leaving, or did he just sorta…ditch you?

“……sorry,” he says sheepishly, attempting to cover his bases, but you shake your head.

“Don’t worry about it,” you say. “I figured something pretty important must’ve been up and it wasn’t too hard to figure out what when my husband and our resident noisemaker both disappeared at the same time.”

You come right up to Sans and the cat, unable to stop your grin as she cranes her head directly backwards to look at you.

She seems happy to see you and the feeling is mutual. You gently harass her, flicking her ears and letting her chew your finger a bit.

“How’s Banshee like the place, anyway?” you wonder.

Banshee, that was it!

But Sans doesn’t have to worry about forgetting that again.

“slinky likes it just fine,” he assures you. “already buddied up with buddy, even.”

You smile, but also… you know him entirely too well.

“She got that name for a reason, didn’t she?”

Sans shrugs, but he’s already grinning, anticipating your question.

You sigh. “Alright, alright, let’s hear it—why ‘Slinky’?”

“wasn’t lookin’ where she was goin’ an’ cartwheeled down the stairs.”

“Pfft! Hahahahaha, Sans…!” You scoops Slinky up and hold her to your chest, as if protecting her from him. “That’s so mean!”

“heheheheh, you’re laughin’,” he gleefully points out. “‘sides, it ain’t like she’s gonna come when we call. could name her ‘fartface’ if we wanted to.”

“Let’s…stick with ‘Slinky’ for now.”

“yeah, you’re right. ‘fartface’ is more of a middle name.”

Sans knows the punch-line hit you unexpectedly when you snort trying to hold back a wheeze and his soul feels fit to burst with pride.

You may not be the biggest audience he’s ever performed for, but you’re definitely one of the best.

And you’re hands down his absolute favorite.

Sans doesn’t miss his guess about Slinky: she’s a great fit for your home.

She…causes some collateral damage around the house from time to time—which Papyrus doesn’t particularly love—but she more than makes up for it by being the sweetest cat you could ever imagine.

One of her favorite things to do is just sit on top of people and purr. She does it to everyone in the house at some point or another, but she seeks out Sans’ lap the most and it’s…nice.

It’s especially nice for those times when you and Pap are at work and Sans is home, dissociating so hard that not even Buddy’s head resting on his feet is enough to bring him back around.

Lately, Sans has been coming back to himself with a dog at his feet and a vibrating cat-loaf in his lap, or just a little more rarely, some loud, insistent screaming and gentle paws bapping at his skull because it’s lunch-time and Queen Slinky has not been fed yet, the horror!

You make for a much kinder nursemaid than the cat, but… Sans thinks Slinky does a pretty good job, too.

At least good enough to earn her an extra treat or two on top of her meals, just because.

Slinky loops around your feet and yells excitedly when you get home, barely bullies Buddy, and as much as Papyrus gives her the side-eye-socket and refers to her exclusively as, “The Menace,” he always seeks her out and plops her onto his lap while he’s watching those soap operas he loves so much, and that’s more telling than anything else.

Sans is really glad he brought her home.

He feels like he made a good decision.

It’s a rare feeling, for him. It’s often felt like most of his decisions…weren’t entirely his own. Or weren’t decisions at all, just things he had to do.

But he didn’t have to get this cat: nobody told him to do it, nobody needed him to do it, nothing bad would have happened if he hadn’t done it.

…But life feels just a little bit nicer because he did and that’s…good.

Really good.

Slinky’s most hated enemy in the entire world is definitely the washing machine.

Something about the look or smell of it had already put it afoul of her, but then she had discovered something far more sinister about it.

Sometimes…one of you turned it on.

She certainly couldn’t hear it but she must’ve been able to feel its vibrations or something because her indignant, offended yelling could not be stopped on Laundry Day, The Most Awful of All Days.

Sans is recording this one.

“…aaan’ we’re live at the scene of the most clawful travesty catkind has ever seen—the washing machine is running. we go to our correspondent, slinky, for more. slinky?”

Slinky looks right at the camera of Sans’ phone. “MYAAAAAAAAAH!”

“harrowing. now, do ya’ think there is even the slightest pawssibility that you’re blowing this out of proportion?”

“MRRRRRAAAAAA!”

“i see. and ya’ can’t think of any way to put a better spin on this?”

“MRRRRRRRR.”

“well, far be it from me to tell ya’ what you should be feline in the midst of this catastrophe.”

Sans angles his phone towards the washing machine and the clothes and soap swirling around inside.

“yeeeep, me an’ slink are havin’ loads of fun here. might have to spring for another cycle just to keep it goin’.”

As if Slinky could understand him—or even hear him—she yells again and it almost sounds like the word ‘no.’

He loves this freakin’ cat.

“heheheh, c’mon, slink, get a sense of humor, m’only kitten.”

Slinky bats at the glass door of the washing machine, utterly humorless and very loud (as usual).

Sans sighs.

“guess not everybody appreciates the clean humor. maybe i gotta start workin’ blue?”

He stops the recording before he can laugh too hard at his own joke and texts the video straight to you.

He doesn’t expect a quick response, and he doesn’t get one.

You’re out—not at work, but at some sorta training class with Buddy. Sans thinks it’s to do with service dog stuff, something about ‘he’s gonna earn that damn vest’, and while Buddy’s certainly smart enough for it, he doesn’t totally see the point in it himself.

It’s important to you and your Justice soul, though, and that’s all that really matters to Sans, in the end, so whatever classes you want to take with your son is fine by him.

The (horrible, evil, no good) laundry is finished by the time Sans gets an answer.

You: LOL, baby, you gotta post that one!

………post it?

PUNbelievable: what, like…online?

You: Yeah, it’s really funny!

Sans is…honestly a little thrown by the suggestion.

He never thought of doing that before.

He wonders…if you’re just saying something nice, or if you really think he should do it.

And even if you do…you’re probably the most biased person he could ask.

You love him, of course you think his goofy cat puns and laundry jokes are funny.

He spares a glance at Slinky, already happily loafed and furring up the clean, folded sweatpants at the top of the laundry pile.

She’s the real star of that video, isn’t she?

Eventually, he settles on a response to you.

PUNbelievable: i’ll take another one next laundry day with just slink in it, give the people what they really want.

A weird, screaming cat seemed more like something people on the internet would actually wanna see, without his half-baked puns ruininginterrupting it.

But you insist.

You: No, it’s perfect, funnybones, just post it!!!

Three exclamation points—you really must mean it.

Sans still hesitates.

He spends a couple days mulling it over, resisting the urge to just ‘accidentally’ delete the video from his phone so he’d have an excuse not to do anything with it, but in the end…

In the end, Sans thinks that as biased as you are, he probably trusts your opinion more than his own when it comes to…himself.

And if you think it’s funny, then somebody else out there probably will, too. Even just one more smile out there in the world is something Sans has trouble saying ‘no’ to.

He posts the video.

And the comments flood in.

Most of them are exactly what Sans expected:

 ……Sans actually screenshots that last one, just to save.

But he finds himself coming back to the post every couple of hours, reading new comments and old ones, trying (and mostly failing) to remember if the number of likes had gone up since the last time he looked.

It makes him feel… a very familiar feeling.

It’s just a flash, but it feels the same as when he used to be able to do standup; when his skull was whole and he could retain a whole set, beat for beat, without getting mixed up somewhere or forgetting an hour in if he already did that joke or not.

All he did was post a little video, but looking at all these likes and comments makes him realize what’s actually happening here: that there’s real, actual people out there, hundreds of them, and they’re all looking at this clip with his weird cat and his silly puns and they’re smiling. They’re laughing, they’re having a good time and it’s…

It’s because of Sans.

He did that.

A thought slowly creeps its way into his skull.

That video wasn’t even five minutes long.

Sans’ short-term memory sucks, but even he can keep himself on track for five minutes.

It’s been a long time since Sans has felt this openly, unrestrainedly hopeful. The last thing that made him feel like this was…is you, the love of his life, and getting to feel so passionate about something again—after so long without it—is exciting beyond the telling of it.

The next time he’s home alone with Slinky, he pokes her belly, waking her up from a nap.

She yells at him, but he pays it no mind.

“hey, slink. ya’ ready to take the stage again?”

Because Sans thinks…that he is.

The next video he takes is of Slinky on her back and trying to rabbit-kick a cat-toy that she’s way too long for.

His punning game is cranked up to eleven and without anyone’s encouragement necessary, he goes right ahead and posts it.

The likes and comments come in a flood and most of them are still about the cat, but Sans doesn’t think he minds playing second fiddle to a feline with as much star-power as Slinky’s got.

He spends a long time reading over the stuff people have to say about him and his cat and almost every single one gives him that same amazing thrill of validation.

But his favorite is still the one you left on it.

LOL, what a goober. Like father like daughter! ;3

Sans looks at those words and the cute little emoticon and all he can think about is how amazing it is that he has all this; that he’s still around to have all this.

He’s alive and thriving, with a nice house and plenty of food in it for him, his brother, his human, and two pets. He has a family that loves him, he’s (more or less) stable, and now, he has a brand new hobby that’s giving him feelings he thought he’d never get to experience again.

Things are good. He’s okay, and more than that, he’s…

Keys jingle from behind the front door and Sans knows that it’s you.

The second you’re through the door, he’s on you—sweeping you up into his arms and nuzzling the living daylights out of you.

You laugh, one of Sans’ favorite sounds in the world.

“Sans, what the hell,” you giggle in between smooching him back, but Sans just shakes his head.

“no reason,” is what he says, because there really isn’t one.

He’s just happy.

Maybe that’s reason enough.

He sleeps all day

His fur is never, ever smooth

Has bad case of bed whiskers

Demanding af

When he wants something, he won’t leave you alone until he gets it (will even resort to doing that weird cat meow-yell at you)

Probs a tuxedo cat

Don’t touch him unless he comes to you for attention

Will not want to be picked up. Ever.

Sleeps on your pillow

Steals things. Straight up. He especially likes taking keychains for whatever reason?

Whenever you do a big cleaning, you find his stash of stolen items (including a pair of underwear, they weren’t yours btw)

Doesn’t play very often. He might poke the toys, but a minute later he just walks away

Loves to look out the window whenever he’s in a car

Sometimes sits on the toilet while you shower and flushes it (he’s a smart boi)

Nuzzles your cheek and tries to squeeze into your arms when you’re on your laptop

His best cat friends are Ignis, Noctis, and Gladio (tho Gladio intimidates him)

He and Noctis sleep together sometimes

His face fur sticks all over the place omg

He has a really light, fast purr

Likes to lay on his back with his belly to the sky

Has a sensitive stomach and will puke if he eats to quickly

He is so skittish omg

jumps at the slightest thing and his breathing gets fast

He is so finicky

About to feed him? Boi you better wipe that dish down

Speaking of crap, you must now clean the litterboxes every night. He will not stand for once a week or even every other night.

Likes to watch you cook, he’ll either sit on the counter while staring at your hands or he’ll jump on top of the fridge

Not a lap cat. At all.

He only likes his head to be petted

Tho he will allow you to brush him other places, provided you don't pet him

wow owwowowowo has it been a looong fucking few months...& I say few, but after checking my last post, it’s actually been F I V E months since my lil tragedy and let.me.fuckin.tell.you.... it’s been a RIDE bro

I know no one remembers me / no one cares / & maybe even no one gets on here anymore (I hope not tho at least; I’m kinda diggin what little I have seen on my dash tho), but TW: pregnancy loss. So that happened, then my boyfriend broke up with me & kicked me out the house.

So I had to move back to where I’m from and I am still teeechnnniiiically homeless (I kindve do have a place to stay, but there’s no place to sleep AT the place. it’s also a very discostin place. like... there’s a room just for the t h r e e cat’s litterboxes disgusting. with carpet. the cats don’t all get along with each other so there’s a lot of territorial things happening & one of them just... has no home training and is wild & the last will NOT go in the box if it’s even just a lil dirty, so he goes all. over. they all do actually. and the person i’m living with doesn’t clean it every single chance they need to/should. it’s also very messy with junk. there’s just shit (ha ha not actual shit but also? yes actual shit too:/ ) everywhere; 3.5 out of 5 hoarding skill. of just....random-ass-stuff-all-over. so that’s happening....

i did find a job, and i’ve been at it for roughly a month, but we’ve only been open open (since after Hurricane Ida) for almost 2weeks & every penny i’ve made since then (i’m a server) has gone to people who I owe for getting me through the timespan of when I just moved back here + had nothing to my name. the people that fed me and made sure i had enough money for literal necessities as a woman.so i haven’t yet been able to put anything aside and it’s just all v stressful BUT(..!) All this to say: I just randomly (I say “random”, but was watching a Vixella stweam + it made me wanna play TS4 and get back on here and DL cc and organize my mods folder and basically just go back to the time just 3 mos ago when I wasn’t homeless, still had my relationship, didn’t have to work and honestly... had the life I wanted. So. but. I hope all of you have been well all this time (speaking to myself cause I know daMN well no one will read this bullchit LOL), and if you did read this GOD I hope you are exCEPTIONAL n happy n healthy and have everything you could ever want and need out of this life already. I’m going lurk Tumblr for 5 hours straight to try & remember everything my smol, dumb brain forgot about and all my faves and all the new and fresh and exciting cc and wow? iS this ACtual exCITEMENT I FEEL???? That isn’t accompanied by the weight of the world in stress? (my brain is always v conflicting & contradicting; I’ma gemini whatcannIsay) I hope this feeling lasts at least a littlewhile. Part 1 My cat that I bottle fed acts very loving when I have him in my room (where he stayed from 3 weeks to 10) he meows, kneads and flops into my hands and demands love, and goes around the room meowing, with all of my other cats this means that they want out of the room so they're buttering me up, but when I open the door for him he doesn't walk out, and if I set him out he comes back in. I don't have food, water or a litter box in my room so I don't want to leave him in it too long.

Part 2 Is he just really happy to be back in a place that he knows is safe and very comfortable? His siblings don’t do this, though one does run in my room so we have to pick him up :P all the others, including the 3 that I didn’t bottle feed from kittens act how this one is acting when they want out. I have treated him differently than the others, he was the runt of the litter and wasn’t nearly as active when trying to get food or just live like the others were when I got them.

Part 3 Their mom was feral and someone had moved the kittens into a box with a blanket so they didn’t have to be in the hot car where she had them, but after that she wanted nothing to do with them and didn’t feed them for who knows how long. They were weak, hungry and dirty and I babied all of them, but the runt especially. He got more cuddles, and more attention in general since I was so worried about him.
